Fontodi 2016 Chianti Classico

A riserva in all but name, innate boldness and richness here don't lie. Not to mention price. Black-skinned fruit, blue flower, leather, mocha, incense and cedar aromas foreshadow a dense and gripping theme that pervades a black cherry and plum palate laced with earthy and sanguine nuances. Momentarily channels its inner Central Otago Pinot before reverting to type. Multifaceted with ample structure, substance and quintessential sangiovese acidity.

Still keeping us in suspense, this no ordinary annata WILL overstay its welcome in the chiller. Then again, you expect nothing less from Fontodi. — ★★★½

Giovanni Manetti has been managing his family's property since 1979. From the start he has been pushing the quality of the region forward and, as the new President of the Chianti Classico consortium, he continues to do so. Though not claimed as such, Fontodi's annata could technically be a Riserva and the 2016 is particularly spectacular. Still nascent, it's stunningly fragrant with scents of smoke, anise, dark red cherry and violet. Ample yet graceful tannins cling to the palate with succulent fruit to balance. Has a lovely day driving around Chianti and visiting some of thier special hilltop towns with stops in Greve, Radda, Castellina and Badla Passignano. The undisputed highlight of the day was the food truck with a view in Panzano. The other surprise was driving home from dinner and a pack ( a sounder) of wild boar running across the road in front of us.

A Day in Tuscany

Exactly between Florence and Siena is the tiny hill town of Panzano in Chianti. The town has won notoriety because of its butcher, Dario Cecchini, known internationally as The Italian Butcher. Cecchini has trained some of the worlds’ top chefs. Building on that notoriety, he has turned his humble butcher shop in this tiny hill town into a foodie destination. Today, we took the bus from Florence to Panzano in Chianti and had lunch at one of his restaurants there, Sonociccia.

The bus got us there a few hours early, so we took a walk. Tuscany is incredibly beautiful.

The little town is also charming.

And Panzano is in the heart of Chianti country.

Per tentare di capire cosa muova la sindaca di Monfalcone, che si è fatta conoscere nel mondo per la sua crociata contro le moschee, bisogna andare indietro di una cinquantina d'anni e osservare una foto in bianco e nero. Bruno Cisint, saldatore specializzato a Fincantieri, siede sulla poltrona di casa in tuta da lavoro e in braccio tiene una bambina. È sua figlia, si chiama Anna Maria.

«Quel lavoro ha consentito ai miei genitori di dare da mangiare alla nostra famiglia, ma dal 2005, con l'abuso degli operai in subappalto, tutto è cambiato. È arrivata manodopera a basso costo, ed è arrivata in massa. La nostra città è cambiata: vedo donne coperte dalla testa ai piedi camminare diligentemente dietro agli uomini. E vedo tante piccole Saman Abbas. […]», racconta Anna Maria Cisint dal terrazzo del municipio che si affaccia su piazza della Repubblica.

[…] La sindaca di Monfalcone vive ancora nel quartiere di Panzano, villaggio operaio costruito nel 1908 per volere dei fratelli Cosulich, fondatori del Cantiere Navale Triestino. Monfalcone, i Carabinieri recuperano due monopattini elettrici rubati dal valore di 1500 euro. Segnalato un giovane del luogo. Dopo una rapida indagine i Carabinieri della Compagnia di Monfalcone potrebbero aver identificato il presunto autore del furto di due monopattini uno dei quali era stato rubato, poche ore prima, nei pressi dell’ingresso dello Stabilimento Fincantieri di Panzano. Le indagini erano scaturite in seguito alla denuncia di un cittadino sloveno che aveva dichiarato alla locale Stazione la sparizione del proprio monopattino parcheggiato al mattino nell’area preposta, adiacente allo stabilimento, dove si stava recando per intraprendere il turno di lavoro. Nell’andare a riprenderlo a fine giornata aveva notato la sparizione. I Carabinieri, verificato che sul mezzo era installata un’apparecchiatura GPS, lo hanno localizzato nei pressi del Campo Sportivo di Staranzano. Il controllo dell’area da parte dei militari ha consentito di recuperare il monopattino rubato, ed un secondo mezzo che è successivamente risultato asportato nello stesso luogo nella stessa mattinata ed il cui furto era stato denunciato al Commissariato di P.S. di Monfalcone. Siamo partiti nei pressi di Panzano in Chianti per risalire sino a oltre 500 metri attraversando una parte di bosco molto rigoglioso e successivamente il torrente Greve. Dopo il torrente, risalendo un po', abbiamo trovato un cancello senza lucchetto che interrompeva il sentiero CAI e che ci ha fatto perdere tempo. Poche decine di metri sotto Lamole, l'ultima parte del sentiero boschivo che avrebbe contribuito a chiudere l'anello era disastrato. Alberi sradicati, rami stroncati, frasche e fitta macchia hanno reso la camminata impegnativa sino al punto in cui siamo dovuti tornare indietro per la presenza di cinghiali. Abbiamo così deciso di modificare il percorso.  Siamo di nuovo tornati a Lamole e tramite strada normale, passando da Castellinuzza, abbiamo raggiungo la macchina, ma...(Il seguito lo raccontiamo a termine del video). In totale abbiamo percorso oltre 15 Km con un dislivello di circa 500 metri.

”Thank you,” Mary murmured as the waiter dropped off a plate on the side of the table - it was an appetizer she had selected while awaiting the arrival of the other party meant to be sitting across from her. Usually, she wouldn’t have bothered meeting with anyone past ‘business’ hours ( that included Steven Grant ). This individual had been rather . . . insistent which was more than accurate to use when describing her, Lyla Michaels was the wife of John Diggle - Oliver Queen’s bodyguard and additional team mate as well. She knew that because Laurel Lance was her best friend, and also part of team Arrow. Looking at the watch on her wrist, nails tapped the side of the little plate in front of her, she didn’t have her phone with her - personal policy. If someone was going to go out of their way to be insistent about meeting for dinner to discuss … metahuman business … she was not going to be interrupted by unnecessary notifications on her phone. T h a t was highly inconsiderate, at least in her eyes it was - so her phone was locked up in the trunk of her jeep.

Just as the waiter reappeared to ask her if everything was all right because she hadn’t touched the Spuma di Ricotta, a woman with short brown hair took the seat across from Mary finally. Mary looked over at the waiter and just quietly nodded before her dark eyes looked towards the other. “Does the director of ARGUS not follow her own schedule or are you just in the business of annoying people by being late?” The waiter had walked off now, he’d return in a few more minutes … or a little longer, depending on how this conversation went.

Lyla inhaled a deep breath and smiled tightly towards Mary, ” As a director of a secret government agency - sometimes my time isn’t my own even when I want it to be. As someone who works for herself, you know that sometimes things clash into each other time wise and that’s not something you have ANY actual control over. ”

Mary could only grimace at the accuracy and leaned back in her seat as a man in a black suit approached the table and placed a manilla envelope in front of her. One brow arched as she looked between the man, the envelope and then back to Lyla. “I’m not opening that in here,” She knew better - far too many eyes all around them. “Might be better if you order something to drink, maybe something to eat and… make this look as ‘normal’ as possible.” Spotting the waiter who emerged from the kitchen, she signaled him over and pointed at Lyla.

Lyla had briefly looked at the menu and was quietly in agreement with what the other had said. “ I’ll have the Sugo di Alce and Tentua Sant’anna, please and thank you. ” She handed the menu back to the waiter and watched him walk off. ” Did you order anything other than the antipasti? ”

Mary nodded her head, “I don’t drink wine -- but I did in fact order the Pollo e Gnocchi, and just sticking with my water.” Wine tasted only like the tannins, nothing else to her since she was first able to drink and that was why she preferred sour / tart beers because with regular beer she could taste the barley / hops more than anything. “So, why exactly do you require … my assistance?”

” Anything S-Squad related tends to leave a bad taste in Diggle’s mouth because of his personal history with Deadshot … so it’s safer in this instance to outsource. You’ve got more than a good reputation amongst your own team - Barry, Kara, Oliver, and Laurel also speak highly of you. Pretty sure your father would even speak highly of you. ”

Mary stopped while bringing the glass of water to her lip when Lyla brought up her adoptive father, Thor. “If you could even get in contact with him, he would - he and Amelia aren’t the greatest with mundane technology and I do NOT suggest approaching Norway unless you send an envoy first.” She’s mostly warning Lyla because of Fenrir, he was still guarding the cave while Heimdall was in recovery. Last thing they needed was an incident with A.R.G.U.S. “Even then … I still wouldn’t suggest it because it could turn out very bad.” At least until Heimdall was back on his feet and once more in control of the bifrost from new Asgard to old Asgard.

Lyla was taking mental notes and nodded her head, ” Duly noted - steer clear of Norway unless we end up finding someone who can reach him without any issues. ” Both women smiled at the waiter when he dropped off their food, along with Lyla’s drink and walked off. Mary had placed the manilla envelope inside the bag she had with her and kept it behind her the whole time for safety.

” We’ve had recent reports of sudden fires … mostly home fires, disguised very cleverly as arson in certain parts of southern california into mexico. ” She placed her fork and knife down, ” And I know it’s not you doing it - nor your friend Beatriz which leaves one other individual that is supposed to be dead…”

Mary blinked a few times, “Oh that’s got to be fun for you - but then again I imagine whomever it is is familiar with A.R.G.U.S. and the S-Squad. Which is why you’re asking me to go after whomever they are, sounds like fun.”

THREE WEEKS LATER - Los Angeles, California.

According to the thick file that Lyla had handed over to her, Los Angeles was the home of the metahuman she was to retrieve. Sending another pyro to retrieve a pyro was a little amusing, at least to her because from the list of abilities she had seen in the file … El Diablo could had mystical resurrection to his list. He’s supposed to be dead and that means he was somehow not.

As far as she’s aware … resurrection is only achieved in a few ways. By phoenix blood - like herself, having a particle of an eldritch terror called The Return inside of them, or by other mystical means. Necromancy was another way, usually that was very dark magic - costing a part of the necromancer’s soul or something. Either way, maybe she should at least ask this El Diablo how he came back from the dead before deciding whether or not she was going to attempt to hand him over to Lyla. Stepping out of the rental car, sunglasses placed on top of her head as she walked away from the vehicle. “If I were someone that could easily burn homes down without batting an eye but also had to hide … where oh where would I hide?” That was a rhetorical question, Los Angeles had a vast homeless population and if he was clever as Lyla had alluded to .. he was hiding somewhere amongst the thousands of homeless.

” … Possibly somewhere by the water…” She murmured to herself and headed back towards the rental car, bringing up the GPS locator as well as the last known address of that house fire. Trying to locate the nearest beach in order to locate her … target? No that didn’t even sound right to her. Inquiry? Yeah sure, her INQUIRY.

Un occhio sul #gallonero @chianticlassico 2021-20-19 e la sua leggenda in 174 assaggi su @intravino (link in bio) • • • • • L’annata 2021 nel Chianti Classico è stata un preludio della 2022 senza l’esperienza che quest’ultima ha portato ai produttori. Un’annata difficile da interpretare, soprattutto dopo il biennio esaltante e “facile” 2020-2019. Con il senno di poi, la 2021 sarebbe stata un millesimo da lavorare più in chiave leggera e croccante, evitando estrazioni e surmaturazioni, e cercando di smorzarne l’intensa acidità. Con le uve a settembre piantate su valori altissimi e gli zuccheri in salita vertiginosa, non deve essere stato facile decidere il momento della raccolta ma ancora meno la gestione in cantina per evitare estrazioni troppo importanti. Nei nostri assaggi, non sono mancati vini splendidi e toccanti, mentre il resto si attesta su una media di piacevolezza di tutto rispetto ma senza picchi di esaltazione. • La 2020 può invece essere definita una 2019 che non ce l’ha fatta. La 2020, che comunque nelle sue espressioni migliori sfiora la perfezione sia per tipologia che nella prospettiva gastronomica a tavola. • • Infine, ancora una volta la 2019 soddisfa ogni parametro di godimento e mostra, anche nelle versioni d’annata (e ancor più nelle meravigliose Riserve e Gran Selezione), com sia una grande annata nel Chianti Classico, con frutto nitido e composto, rimandi floreali splendidi e una sapidità costante che sottende a tantissimi vini.
