ENJOY YOUR STAY . . .
Tumblr media
It’s always the nice ones that get you . After weeks of long hours you need a break so you decide to use your paid time off now but what to do . You decide to try a new medical spa that you just found to hand opened nearby to you . The reviews were good and the patients were pleased with their stay there . After giving it some thought you decided to go for the week thinking what would you lose doing it? . Arriving there you checked in and sign the wavier at the front desk you barely read it but consented anyway thinking it was a responsibility waiver for the clinic . After walking through the main doors they took your bags and took you to be initially examined and after to your room . A sterile hospital like room two chairs a hospital bed and a hanging modern decent size TV . On the bed was a hospital gown , you were plainly asked to de cloth and wear it for your stay once you did, they took your regular clothes for safekeeping. You would relax on the bed for a little while before dinner came it was a nicer meal compared to a regular hospital, but given the asking price for your stay here it fit . While you ate you watched the TV which had streaming box with everything you could want from it . Soon it was bedtime in the light in the hallway went out along with yours so you want to bed . However, unbeknownst to you it would radically change overnight.
In the morning, you would awake dazed, and sore and with a warm moist feeling around your crock. Looking beside you a IV stand was now there with you hooked up to it . You would lay in bed feel around and with a shock would feel yourself urinating yourself confused you waited . Eventually, two nurses arrived you would ask what was wrong with you and you would find just that . One of the nurses would open the curtain. The other lifted your gown to expose a big bulky moist medical diaper. Very confused you would asked what they had done to you . One of the nurses would coldly reply to you according to the waive you signed you consented to any and all procedures, they deemed medically necessary for you including Surgically Induced Incontinence. Your face would go white as a realized what you agreed to absentmindedly before . Right before you could think further , the other nurse and proceeded to lift your legs into change you. Mortified you watched her change it out and spry urine and realizing what they had done to you . Once they had finished they said they would be back for you to take you out to see the rest of the spa. Sitting in your clean diaper you stared, motionless into the void coming to terms with this new reality. After being fed lunch you would be wheeled out to see the rest of it . The spa would indeed live up to the few images on the website and you would get to spend the quality time you wanted albeit diapered. You would interact with the other patients here all over which in various states of changed and all in diapers .
By the time you got back to your room and changed again you barely touched you dinner as as you contemplated going home in a weeks time now diapered thinking what needed to change now that you were this way and couldn’t go back . Over the next few days you would experience the most change since adolescence . The next morning, waking up to find a gastric feeding tube installed onto your stomach and then on being feed fluids and mashed up food in a IV bag . The following after morning come to find a new hysterectomy scar across your lower body . Midway through the week you awoke to find your self paralyzed from the waist down and everything beyond that numb and Ice to the touch now . For the next following days you acclimatize to an new motorized wheelchair they “gifted” you . When finally you’re stay included in discharged, you were a different person from when you had entered . Now Incontinence and Paralyzed you had to live this way for now on. Conveniently the Medical spa gave the necessary paperwork to make the transition as convenient as possible . Even went home eating was different instead of solid meals it was from an IV Bag through the gastric tube as your stomach had contracted due to the invasive medication in your IV bags to be unsuitable for solid food again. Returning to work traumatized and broken all you could do was remember the sign on the door of the medical spa “enjoy or stay”.

Patti Smith arrived in New York on July 3, 1967, via the decidedly un-scenic Port Authority Bus Terminal (625 8th Ave.), where she immediately transferred to the subway and headed for Brooklyn. She hoped to connect with a friend who was enrolled at the nearby Pratt Institute, an Engineering and Arts college in Clinton Hill. Unfortunately, it was summer break and her friend had moved to a new apartment. One of the current residents knew where her friend could be found, though, and offered to direct her there. This would be her first fleeting encounter with Robert Mapplethorpe, a young Pratt art student, and the man who would ultimately become her closest companion for the next few years. Alas, her friend was not at the said address, so Patti would sleep rough for the next several days, on porches, and in Central Park close to the statue of Alice in Wonderland.
Like many young newcomers, she would wander the streets of Greenwich Village and spend hours observing the people in Washington Square Park, an active gathering place for artists, folkies, activists, and people of every stripe imaginable. She explored St. Marks Place and the East Village, then a fairly ragged but colorful neighborhood of immigrants, hippies, artists, and the poor, always dragging her plaid suitcase along with her. One day she and a street friend found a little money and treated themselves to a hot meal at the Waverly Diner (385 6th Ave.), but otherwise she ate day-old bread and handouts. The rest of the time she was desperately looking for work, and after a disastrous single shift waiting tables at a Times Square restaurant, she found work at the midtown flagship location of Brentano’s (586 5th Ave.), a venerable bookstore near Rockefeller Center. She still had no place to stay, though, and often surreptitiously slept in the store overnight, only to emerge from the bathroom in the morning as the others readied the store. One day she ran into Mapplethorpe again in the bookstore. He, coincidentally, worked at the downtown branch of Brentano’s (20 University Pl.) in the Village. Not long afterwards, in the midst of an uncomfortable date with an older bookstore patron, Patti spotted Mapplethorpe in Tompkins Square Park, where he happily rescued her by posing as her boyfriend. The two shared an egg cream at Gem Spa (131 2nd Ave.) while commiserating. The pair would become inseparable. He brought her to stay at his place, an attic room in the home of some friends on Waverly Avenue in Brooklyn. After several weeks, the two had enough money saved for their own place nearby at 160 Hall St. on the second floor for $80 per month. This would become their headquarters for well over a year.
By winter, both Patti and Robert had lost their jobs at Brentano’s but found seasonal employment at FAO Schwarz (745 5th Ave.), the gigantic toy shop. Robert decorated windows, but Patti was stuck at the cash register. Afterward, she worked briefly at Argosy Books (116 E. 59th St.) before settling at Scribner’s Book Store (597 5th Ave.). Scribner’s would be her steady job for the next couple of years. Robert, meanwhile, went through a succession of jobs, one of which was as an usher at the Fillmore East (105 2nd Ave.), where he was able to get Patti in to see the Doors. Jim Morrison was to have a lasting influence on her...

Gift for Shippy: Shouto sips from his drink and then says, “I’m sure you would be a great sister-in-law but you can’t marry my brother.” (TogaChako, MHA)
Wait. So you don’t like my brother?
Read on Ao3 (Send Kudos)
tags: friendship, misunderstandings, summer trip, beach volleyball, fireworks, kisses, confessions
note: apparently i've been swept away by the togachako currents because why do i keep wanting to write more fics about them?! a happy fic for a change, lol
——————————————————————————
The day Ochako sees her, she’s at the beach with her friends.
They’d been planning a trip to the beach to celebrate the end of the semester. It was supposed to be a short trip. They’d go swimming, maybe break a watermelon or two, play in the sand, and then relax overnight at one of the nearby cabins. Their mistake (or perhaps blessing, Ochako is starting to realize) was letting Yaomomo organize everything because, on the day they’d planned to leave, just as Iida had texted he’d soon be picking everyone up, Yaomomo confessed there had been a tiny change in their plans.
The change being that they would now be staying at some high end resort by a beach in the complete opposite direction they’d originally planned. AND they were going to be chauffeured by a LIMO. Nobody had the heart to refuse Yaomomo’s bashful and earnest confession of I really wanted this to be special and stress-free for everyone. And it’s a gift because I’m really glad we became friends!
And really, if Yaomomo hadn’t changed their plans, then Ochako wouldn’t have seen her!
“I think I’m in love,” she says without thinking and that stops the conversation.
“Ochako-chan?” Tsuyu asks, turning to the girl sitting next to her.
They’re all sitting at one of the most popular beach bars at the resort, close enough to the bar if they need it, but with a nice view of the beach and sea (instead of the other patrons). Courtesy of Yaomomo’s excellent planning.
They all turn to where Ochako hasn’t stopped staring.
There’s a group of guys and one girl setting up a volleyball net at the designated “court” area. One of the guys has long white hair that he’s tied up into a ponytail, another looks like he could be the girl’s uncle, and the third one is tall with messy black hair. He has the volleyball and is messing with the girl, holding it high over her pigtailed head.
He throws the ball and Ochako realizes that they have a fifth person in their group. When the girl runs over to the guy, he gives her the volleyball. He’s probably the shortest of the group and looks very unamused. That doesn’t stop the girl, in her simple black 2-piece, from grinning at him and pulling him over with the others. He stumbles, but doesn’t pull away.
“They are a very interesting bunch,” Iida proclaims while adjusting his glasses, as if that will somehow help see them better, “which one have you fallen for?”
Yaomomo has a blush on her face, “L-Love? So quickly? That’s so romantic!”
Katsuki snorts, “They all look like they’ve been in the sun too long. One even looks like a prune!”
“Kacchan!” Deku chastises, “That’s not very nice.”
Kirishima is grinning, “Look at the muscles on the old man!”
“He’s very cute,” Tsuyu nods, “Reminds me of our swimming coach. Though he does look a bit tired. He should probably go to one of the spas later.”
It’s all background noise to Ochako…until Shouto speaks. He practically slams his drink onto the table before turning back to face everyone. He’s not angry, but his brows are furrowed so deeply anyone else would have already dropped to their knees to ask for forgiveness
“You like my brother ?” That stops the conversation a second time and Ochako finally looks away from the strange group to look at him.
They all yell, “BROTHER?!”
Shouto looks like he’s swallowed a lemon, “Yeah. The tall one who looks like someone set him on fire. He’s…my…He’s got a terrible personality.”
Katsuki laughs into his drink, “Sounds like it runs in the family.”
“Bakugou!” Iida chides, “That’s not a very nice thing to say, or practical, considering…well, your own attitude.”
Katsuki chokes and yells, “My personality is FLAWLESS, four eyes!”
There’s a lot of squabbling, laughing, and a few rattled drinks. Even the table wobbles a bit.
And yes, Ochako has a lot of questions. For example, how is it that nobody knew about this brother? After nearly a year of friendship?! She had thought Shouto was an only child like the rest of them (sans Iida who spoke about his brother at any chance he could)! Also, why was his brother here on the same day they were? But no. She didn’t ask any of those logical questions. Instead, she asked, “Is that his girlfriend?”
This only seemed to prove Shouto’s theory and he frowned, “No. Last time I heard, he was gay.”
Their group is quiet for a beat and then Kirishima nervously chuckles, “Last time you heard?”
Shouto sips from his drink and then says, “I’m sure you would be a great sister-in-law but you can’t marry my brother.”
“Wait,” Yaomomo says, “So is he not gay? And how did this escalate to marriage?” She’s still blushing and Ochako is 100% sure she’s already planning this supposed wedding. With the luck Yaomomo had with this trip, Ochako would, without a doubt, let her plan her wedding to that girl
Ochako reaches over the table and grabs Shouto by the shoulders, “Is. That. His. Girlfriend?”
Shouto looks shocked and then resigned. He shakes his head, “He’s single. I had hoped until the day he’d die…”
The look he sends her is pleading but she’s already grinning.
Shouto weakly adds, “I have another brother…”
And that’s when Finally, everyone starts to ask him questions about his family.
.
.
.
Ochako is many things but a homewrecker isn’t one of them. And while she does agree with the general populace about the handsomeness of the Todorokis (plural now that she’s seen Dabi), they’re not exactly what she needs. But after some careful observations, she’s noticed that the blonde girl does favor him and thus, he indirectly becomes her target as well
If only as a way to introduce herself. It would surely make her approaching them more natural, saying she’s friends with Shouto rather than saying she’s spent the last hour just watching them (her) from afar…
When she tells everyone she’s going to go say hi, Shouto (once again) tries to stop her, “Natsuo is a better human being. He’s a hundred times better than Dabi.”
Yaomomo giggles, “Didn’t you say he had a fiance?”
Shouto hangs his head, “Maybe we can work something out…”
“Why don’t you offer yourself up if you’re so desperate?” Katsuki says while smirking.
“Oh no,” Deku groans just as a light goes on in Shouto’s eyes.
“I…suppose I could…”
But Ochako is already gone, the sound of Katsuki’s unrestrained laughter as her background theme. Still, it does nothing to distract her from how fast her heart is beating. She curls her fingers into fists and straightens her back, I can do this! She’ll just go up to them and watch a bit of their game (just like the rest of the crowd already forming) and then casually make conversation.
She seems to have good timing because not long after she starts watching them play do they take a quick break. She makes her move, walking toward the duo team of the girl and Dabi.
“H-Hey!” Her face goes red at how her voice cracks but she keeps going (and even adds a little wave)
Dabi zeroes in on her a second before the girl does.
When the girl grins wide, Ochako melts. She’s sweaty and her bangs are a mess but there’s something so utterly beautiful about her. She suspects it’s the way she smiles, as if she had been waiting for Ochako to say something. And, she realizes (never before imagining this is something she NEEDED), the girl’s smile is so wide it reveals a pair of sharp canines.
She tries not to get too ahead of herself but also can’t stop her mind from imagining her saying welcome home (in a voice that is too suspiciously like her own) and her canines snagging on the skin of Ochako’s lips as she kisses her.
But she doesn’t say that. Instead, she says, “Do you know her, Dabi?”
And Dabi, who is still wiping down the sweat off his face, looks her up and down. He hums for a moment and then grins. Ochako wonders how much she can make if she steals his towel and bids it to the group of girls calling out to him. Maybe she can ask Shouto where he’s staying and leak the information
His voice is low when he says, “Not really.” Then he nods, “Shouto.”
He’s not looking at her and when she turns around, she finds most of her friends have followed her. And, Shouto, who looks much better but still rather annoyed, comes to stand right next to her, their shoulders almost brushing. She doesn’t think he’s ever stood so close to her.
Katsuki looks a little too amused.
Dabi throws his towel and the girl catches it. Her eyes briefly turn to the girls Ochako had spotted before and she’s not sure if she imagines it, but her smile turns a bit feral as she uses the same towel to clean off her forehead and shoulders. There are outraged gasps.
Dabi makes a face, “Ugh, really? You have your own towel.”
The girl laughs and Ochako feels like she’s floating. She knows she can listen to that laugh for the rest of her life. In fact, she’s wondering what she can do to make her laugh again.
But Shouto brings her back to reality when he nearly yells (whines), “Didn’t I tell you not to come today?”
“Really? I could have sworn you said, and I quote, ‘make sure to be there or I’ll tell Father.’”
Katsuki is the first to snort, then laugh. Iida crosses his arms, “Did you really threaten such a thing, Todoroki-kun?”
Even Kirishima is giggling, “That’s such a youngest thing to say!”
Todoroki’s face turns a bit red, but he doesn’t budge.
But Ochako is only looking at Shouto with gratitude and even wonders if she should hug him as thanks, “You really invited them?”
It must sound more accusing to Shouto though because he reels, “I didn’t! I told you not to come.” More softly he says, “And I didn’t say I’d tell him.”
Ochako is trying not to laugh but her cheeks go red.
Tsuyu doesn’t even try. She grins, “He’s got a cute side too. This trip has become really interesting.”
Speaking of their trip, Ochako thinks that it’s time to do what she intended. The pair are technically in the middle of a game and she doesn’t want to lose her chance!
“I’m Uraraka Ochako.” She makes sure to make eye contact with the girl, “You can call me Ochako.”
The girl beams but doesn’t offer up her name. Instead, she nearly KOs Ochako (and many can attest that KOing her is Difficult) when she says, “Ochako-chan!”
Ochako doesn’t even try to blame the sun for how warm her body feels or for her sudden dizziness, “Uh, what are your names?”
Four people talk at the same time:
“I already told you his name. It’s Touya.” “Call me Dabi. ” “I’m Toga Himiko! Ochako-chan, call me Himiko, okay!” “What’s taking you all so long?”
The last voice comes from another person from Dabi’s group. It’s the one with the long white hair and dry skin. He’s not even looking at them. He’s just glaring at Dabi. Dabi doesn’t look phased. He smiles and says, “Shouto came to hang out with us.”
Ochako takes that as her chance. Before Shouto can properly complain, she exclaims, “Yes! We thought we could join you.”
“No, we didn’t. I don’t want to hang out with him. We’re not friends.”
And that almost takes Ochako out too because how many times has Shouto outwardly admitted that they’re all friends? Not many, if the reactions of their friends are any indication:
“Todoroki-kun has grown so much. I also value your friendship!” “How many times do I have to tell ya we’re not friends!” “You can stand to learn a thing or two Kacchan.” “That’s such a manly thing to say!”
All of this only seems to amuse Dabi and Ochako knows something is coming when Dabi and Himiko side-eye each other briefly and then grin. The two move so swiftly behind them that Ochako doesn’t even realize what’s happened until her cheek is squished against (she nearly faints) Himiko’s cheek! She also has two pairs of arms around her and all she can think is Himiko is HUGGING ME!
She’s not sure how they achieved it but this is much better than her original plan. Himiko rubs her face with hers and exclaims, “Yes! Let’s play with Baby Dabi and his friends!”
Shouto, who is also being hugged by Himiko and his brother, looks pale and like his soul has just left his body. His voice is raspy when he croaks, “I’m not a baby and let me go!”
Dabi, who is hovering over them all, places his head over Shouto’s and teases, “Come now, Shouto. Are you really going to say no to these pretty ladies here?”
Shouto looks over to Ochako and Himiko. Ochako’s brows are slightly creased but she mouths rather menacingly, Say. Yes.
Shouto looks up into the sky and relents, “Fiiiiiine.”
.
.
.
Most of the rest of their daylight is spent playing volleyball. When Himiko finally lets Ochako go, Ochako grabs her wrist and asks, “Can we be on the same team?”
Himiko grins again and excitedly tells her, “Yes!”
She also insists Dabi has to play on their team ( He’s really good and I like to win ) and when Shouto comes over, his hand raised and mouth ready to proclaim he’ll join them, Himiko nearly runs him down. Instead, Himiko grabs Tsuyu ( You have to join our team! The three of us are so cute! ) and Shouto is left hanging. Dabi grins at him and shrugs in a what can you do manner
Kirishima whistles and flexes, “I guess it’s us guys together then.”
Bakugou, as usual, argues, “I don’t need all of you! And I don’t want to play with Deku! Get on some other team.”
Iida tries to settle them down.
With so many extra players, they decide to make teams of four with Dabi’s friend Spinner saying he can be the scorekeeper ( I’m more of a gamer anyway ). To his slight annoyance, he does get roped into a few games, Jin insisting they were at the beach and that it wouldn’t be a true beach experience if all Spinner did was hide in the shade of the sun umbrella ( We can switch between matches!)
When they do eventually start playing, Ochako realizes that Himiko and the others are really good. It fires them all up and before they know it, an even bigger crowd has formed.
Luckily, it happens in the last game.
It being fatigue. They had quickly realized they had too many people with too much stamina and competitiveness when Shigaraki’s team won their match against Katsuki. Ochako thinks it was only natural. Shigaraki was clearly an excellent player and both Iida and Yaomomo were great at working in teams. With Iida, Yaomomo, and Jin playing support, they’d practically crushed Katsuki’s more chaotic group (which was made up of Kirishima, Deku, and Shouto).
As a way to keep everything fun but still high stakes, they’d decided to only play a certain number of games.
Ochako is once more on the court and this time they’re facing off against Shouto's team. It’s when he delivers a spike that she falters. She had been pretty sure she would make it, but she’s slightly off and all she can think is that they’re going to lose if she doesn’t keep the volley going. She tries to reposition her arm, to get a one-touch, but her body is tired. That’s when Himiko calls out, “I’ve got it!”
And she does. She manages to keep the ball in the air using a single arm, but she’d come from too far in the back and ends up stumbling too. They both fall into the sand and start laughing. Himiko goes so far as to lay on her back and kick up her arms and legs. When she settles down, Ochako goes red when one of her arms ends up on her lap. Her skin is soft and warm
A whistle goes off and Ochako realizes she’s missed the final play (though judging from how smug Dabi looks, it seems like they won).
Ochako is breathing hard and fast, and her arms ache, but she’s extremely happy. Himiko grins at her, “That was so fun, right Ochako-chan?”
Ochako grins back at her, “Yeah!”
Before they can both get up, Dabi and Shouto walk over. Dabi pulls Himiko to her feet and Shouto offers his hand to Ochako. She takes it, and it’s only when she’s up on her feet again that she realizes how tired she is. She unconsciously leans some of her weight on him and he puts a hand on her back, suggesting, “We should go rest.”
He’d been wearing the most clothes out of everyone, but he’d taken off his shirt when he’d gone up against Shigaraki’s team for the second time (Katsuki’s complaints of you overheating bastard, that’s slowing you down! Take it off! And the sun finally getting the best of him)
Yaomomo beams, “We have a spot already reserved for us!”
Ochako wonders if this is something only unique to resorts because how does someone reserve a piece of the beach?! But it’s a welcome thought. She turns to Himiko to see she’s already looking at her and she blushes. She offers, “Will you join us? We were going to break a watermelon.”
“It’s gotten a bit late, perhaps it’s a little dangerous to break the watermelon now,” Iida contemplates, looking at the sunset.
Bakugou smirks over at Shigaraki, “I think it’s the best time.”
Kirishima shakes his head, “It’s not very manly to be a sore loser, you know.”
“I’M NOT A SORE LOSER!” Katsuki yells, “I’LL CRUSH YOU!”
“If your aim is as bad as it was playing volleyball,” Shigaraki smirks back, “Perhaps you should let us take care of it.”
It takes both Deku and Kirishima to hold him back, but his voice is loud on the beach.
They make quick work of putting the net back to its original state and Jin grabs the duffle bag he’d brought, throwing the volleyball inside. He also tells them to throw their sweat soaked towels into a side pocket.
When they finish, Yaomomo takes the lead.
Ochako had planned to walk with Himiko but despite having played numerous rounds of volleyball, she’s quick to run after Jin when he teases her. They kick the sand around their bare feet and before they know it, most of their friends are running as well. They zigzag between the water and sand, trying to cool down, and end up with a bigger (sandy) mess
Dabi ends up keeping pace next to her and Ochako takes the opportunity to ask, “Are you and Himiko…together?” She’d believed Shouto but seeing the two interact had left her doubting. They didn’t exactly act like they were dating, but it was clear to anyone that they were very close.
Dabi snorts, “ Her? No.” He’s eyeing Ochako and then sighs, rolling his eyes, “She’s like an annoying little sister. As if I need any more of those.”
It’s at that moment when Shouto pushes between Dabi and her. Dabi lets himself be pushed aside and when Shouto has pulled her along a few paces, he calls out, “See what I mean!”
Ochako laughs but doesn’t break her contact with Shouto. Instead, she starts pulling him into a run after their friends.
.
.
.
After some splashing, dunking, and cleaning up, they finally settle down and Ochako has to admit that Yaomomo has amazing planning skills. As the sun was setting, more and more people started to arrive and Ochako was glad for their little reservation. When Tsuyu made a comment about it, Yaomomo admitted, “Actually, there will be fireworks tonight, so it’ll get busier from here on out.”
They settle on breaking three watermelons after Shigaraki breaks the second one on his first try. When he takes off his blindfold and sees the nearly perfect split, he turns to Katsuki and smirks.
Shouto goes after him and once they blindfold him and spin him around, Dabi comes over to sit next to her. He whispers, “Watch this.”
He wobbles a bit when Yaomomo lets him go and then he starts walking with the stick over his head. He nearly attacks Katsuki (The hell are you aiming at half-and-half!!) and then Jin (Hey!) . Dabi laughs and then calls out to him, “I’m over here! With your girlfriend!”
When Shouto realizes Dabi has taken his place next to her, his nostrils flare. Dabi just laughs, “If you don’t hurry, I’m going to take her away!”
Everyone is shouting directions and as Shouto finally gets closer to the watermelon, Dabi tells her, “Come with me.”
Ochako turns to look at Himiko, who is also cheering on Shouto. Dabi calls out to her again, “Trust me.”
And she does. She’s not sure why, but she gets up to follow him.
They end up going into one of the bars and Dabi calls out to the bartender, “Kurogiri!”
The man turns at his name and narrows his eyes. Ochako wonders if he doesn’t like Dabi, but it must just be a quirk of his because he’s polite when he greets them, “Dabi.”
She introduces herself and he nods, “Uraraka.”
Dabi leans against the bar and tells him, “The usual for the five of us. And whip up something evil for my kid brother.” He looks at Ochako, “You?”
She orders a simple watermelon tea, then adds, “Actually, can we get 6 of those.”
The man nods, his quick hands already working on their order. He places a glass cup with nearly transparent liquid and lemon pieces in front of Dabi. Dabi grabs it and nearly downs it in a single go.
“A rather large group,” Kurogiri comments.
The bar isn’t as lively as the one they’d been at earlier but it’s cozy in a way Ochako can’t describe. The guests seem more intimate with their arms around each other and their quiet laughter. Even the music playing is quiet and soft
Dabi just shrugs, “Shouto wanted to hang out.”
“I highly doubt that,” the man says while smiling. He turns to Ochako and asks, “What’s the real reason?”
She feels herself blush, “I might have…insisted.”
Kurogiri turns to look at Dabi and raises a brow. “Not me,” Dabi says with his hands in front of him.
That seems answer enough for him. He places the drink he’d been making in front of Ochako and says, “On the house” before heading to the other side of the bar.
It’s like Dabi’s but with a more floral scent.
“For the record,” Ochako says, grabbing the drink, “I’m not his girlfriend. I don’t like him like that.”
Dabi, who is already grabbing the lemons in his drink and plopping them into his mouth, laughs, “I know. And no offense, but I’m sure he’s not into you either.”
They’re both quiet for a moment and then he hums, “Himiko, right?”
Ochako blushes slightly, “Was I that obvious?”
Dabi just smiles, “To me. Jin probably figured it out too. Shigaraki doesn’t care about stuff like that so he probably wasn’t paying attention. Your friends don’t look like they know.”
Ochako laughs, “I didn’t get a chance to tell them. I just…” She makes hand movements of when she walked over to them earlier that day, “And now we’re here.”
He nods in approval, “I like a woman who takes charge. But…”
He leaves that hanging for a moment, then downs the rest of his drink. Kurogiri comes back with a cooler decorated with a bunch of stickers, some faded, some new and all in clashing designs, as if different people laid claim to it. Inside are all the drinks they asked for. Dabi takes a pale pink drink out and gives it to Ochako, “She’s a bit airheaded. It’s best to be direct with her.”
He closes the cooler and then hurries her, “Come on, the fireworks will be starting soon.”
Ochako doesn’t follow for a second and then grins. She catches up to him and bumps his arm, careful of both drinks in her hands, “You’re actually a nice guy, aren’t you?”
He makes a face, “Don’t. I have an image to uphold.”
But that makes her wonder too, “Shouto really doesn’t like you. Why is that?”
Dabi smirks, “Let me tell you a little story about pre-teen Shouto.”
.
.
.
Before they make it back to the spot with the rest of their group, they see Himiko running toward them. She’s wearing a simple white cover up that’s transparent enough that Ochako can still see the silhouette of her 2 piece. She has another hanging from her arms, “Ochako-chan!”
She stops in front of them both and her eyes light up, “You got drinks! I have this for you, too!”
Dabi teases, “What about me? I’m cold too.”
Ochako thinks Himiko sounds a little upset when she says, “No, that’s what you get for taking Ochako-chan. Go away.” Ochako isn’t sure if she should blush or worry that she’s upset the girl she likes. But Dabi, as usual, acts unconcerned and continues to walk away.
Before he walks away too far he looks at Ochako and says, “Take your time.”
And they do.
They swap items and Ochako pulls the cover up over her head. It’s a simple top and once it settles on her body, Himiko smiles. It’s softer than all the grins Ochako has seen her give everyone today. Her voice is nearly a whisper of what it’s been all day too when she says, “I knew it would be perfect.”
That freezes Ochako, her brain only processing it’s perfect, on you, you’re perfect. YOU’RE perfect
Himiko moves to give back the drinks (as if her words hadn’t shifted Ochako’s World) and she tells her, her voice unconsciously matching Himiko’s volume, “This one is for you.”
Somehow, their conversation reminds her of the bar: quiet, intimate.
“It’s my favorite,” she confesses and then links her arm with hers, “Let’s go sit over there.”
Ochako stumbles after her, her face gone red once more, “Ok…”
With how crowded the place is, Ochako is surprised they manage to find an empty bench. When they settle down, she takes courage and sits close enough that their legs touch. Himiko looks down as she takes a sip from her drink, but doesn’t say anything.
“Did you have fun today?” Ochako asks, her voice rising a bit. That seems to break the slight awkwardness they were starting to settle into. She breathes in deeply, relieved.
“It was so fun! I don’t have many girl friends, so it was nice to play with you and Tsuyu-chan and Momo-chan.” She grins, “I don’t get to see Dabi’s brother much either. He’s so much more fun than Dabi said! I’m glad you came to say hi.”
“I’m really glad I did too!” Ochako confesses, and suddenly she wishes she had some weird quirk like Deku that makes him hide his face whenever he’s about to say something emotional. Instead, she just sits there, her hands gripping her cup and her toes playing along the edge of the sidewalk and sand.
“Actually…” She feels her face burn a deep red, “The reason I went over today is because… because…!”
The words end up stuck in her throat and she reminds herself that she’s not a quitter. She has to let Himiko know that she likes her. Dabi told her she had to be direct and she wants there to be more for them. She wants to hang out again. Perhaps go on a few dates. She wants them to be exclusive and -
“Ochako-chan,” Himiko calls her, her face so close it only makes Ochako go redder, “You look so cute in red.” At this distance, Ochako can also tell Himiko’s blushing. That gives her the push she needs.
“I like you!” she yells out, “That’s why I went to say hi! I think it’s love! I know that sounds weird but when I saw you on the beach, I knew I wanted you in my life!”
She feels her eyes and skin prickle with emotion, but with those words out, the rest feels easier. Himiko looks surprised, her earlier smile gone.
“I- I want to be your friend, but I want to be clear. I want you to be my girlfriend, too. I want us to see each other again after this.”
Himiko looks pensive, “Does that mean you want to kiss me?”
Ochako is speechless for a moment and Himiko sings her name, her earlier smile back, “ O-cha-ko-chan , tell me.”
She feels a soft hand over hers and she lets her eyes drop for a moment before looking back up at Himiko. Her eyes are glowing a deep gold and Ochako swallows. She nods and says, “Yes.”
That makes Himiko grin wide, her canines on full display again, “On the lips?”
Ochako’s eyes trace her lips and she nods, “On the lips. And other places, later.”
They’re getting closer, she’s sure of it, but she also can’t make sense of what’s happening. Himiko asks again, “What about now? Should we kiss right now?”
Ochako meets her eyes again and smiles, “Yes. I think we should.”
And they do. They both lean in to close the distance between them and Ochako thinks, I was right just as Himiko’s teeth snag on her lips. They pull and graze along her skin, and Ochako’s body reacts. She shivers and lets her tongue slide along both their lips, trying to settle her nerves. It does the opposite, especially after Himiko makes a sound of surprise, right before also using her tongue to pull her closer. Ochako puts her hand along Himiko’s jaw and she can feel Himiko’s longer fingers touch her thighs and waist, pulling the cloth of her cover up. This time, when she imagines Himiko telling her to come closer Ochako-chan! she hears her cute saccharine and whiny voice instead of her own terrible mimicry
They’re interrupted by a confused, “Wait. So you don’t like my brother?”
They pull apart laughing and then the fireworks light up the sky.
.
.
A/N:
about the dabi&shouto "conflict": (1) shouto doesn't actually hate dabi. it's all sibling love (if you have siblings, you know, lol) (2) my idea is that shouto, being the baby that he is, would look up to dabi and think he was super cool. i was vague with his appearance but imagine someone with at least multiple piercings. he was also independent and would (often) argue with their parents, getting away with a lot bc he's smart like that. he also knew shouto looked up to him and since shouto was the baby he treated him as the baby (babied him, shouto loved it). but dabi was also mischievous and would often tell shouto white lies and shouto would believe *everything* he would say. like, if dabi told him that the world was flat and everyone was just too stupid to understand it, shouto would write a thesis on how right dabi was (3) i guess the idea is that one day dabi ends up embarrassing shouto and it just spirals out of control. shouto realizes that no, the world is not flat and the thesis he wrote is useless. and shouto hates it when he's still teased and babied but he also loves dabi. like, he could have NOT said anything about his beach trip but he did and yes, he did tell dabi not to come and even threatened to tell their mom, but he wasn't actually serious haha, idk, i just think they'd be really cute if it was out of canon?? idk, that's what i hope for at least :')

The SEO Marathon:Why Slow and Steady wins the Digital Race
Discover why SEO success takes time and learn strategies to stay motivated during your long-term SEO journey. Perfect for digital marketers feeling SEO burnout!
Tumblr media
1.The SEO Sprint vs. Marathon Mindset
Hey there, digital marketing rockstar! Feeling a bit winded in your SEO race? Trust me, we’ve all been there. It’s tempting to think of SEO as a mad dash to the top of Google’s rankings, but here’s the truth bomb: SEO is more marathon than sprint.
Think about it. You wouldn’t expect to go from couch potato to marathon runner overnight, right? Same goes for SEO. It’s all about building that endurance, one step at a time.
2.Why SEO Takes Its Sweet Time
So, why can’t we just chug some digital Red Bull and zoom to the top? Here’s the deal:
Building Authority: Google’s not handing out authority like free samples at Costco. You gotta earn it, and that takes time.
Link Building: Quality links are like gold in the SEO world, but you can’t just mine them overnight.
Content Indexing: Google’s bots are fast, but they’re not The Flash. It takes time for them to crawl and index your awesome content.
Algorithm Plot Twists: Google loves to keep us on our toes with algorithm updates. Adapting takes time.
User Behavior: As your site gets better, so do your user metrics. But users need time to notice and change their behavior.
3.Staying Pumped When Progress Feels Slow
Feeling like you’re running in digital quicksand? Here’s how to keep your SEO mojo flowing:
Set Realistic Goals: Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is SEO success. Set achievable milestones.
Celebrate Small Wins: Did your rankings jump up even a little? Break out the party hats!
Focus on Your Audience: Instead of obsessing over rankings, focus on creating killer content your audience will love.
Keep Learning: SEO is always evolving. Stay curious and keep updating your skills.
Mix It Up: Don’t put all your eggs in the SEO basket. Try other marketing strategies too.
4.Common SEO Hurdles and How to Leap Over Them
The Ranking Rollercoaster: Rankings fluctuate. Focus on overall trends, not daily changes.
Fierce Competition: Analyze your competitors, then find ways to stand out. Be the purple cow in a field of black and white!
Resource Crunch: Short on time or money? Prioritize the SEO tasks that pack the biggest punch for your business.
Content Fatigue: Keep your content fresh and exciting. Think of it as giving your website a regular spa day.
5.FAQ: Your Burning SEO Questions Answered
Q: How long until I see SEO results?
A: It varies, but typically, you might start seeing some movement in 4-6 months, with more significant results in 6-12 months.
Q: Is it worth investing in SEO if it takes so long?
A: Absolutely! While it takes time, SEO can provide long-lasting, cost-effective results compared to paid advertising.
Q: Can I speed up SEO results?
A: While you can’t cheat the system, focusing on technical SEO, creating high-quality content, and building genuine backlinks can help accelerate your progress.
Q: What if I stop doing SEO?
A: Your rankings may start to slip as competitors continue their efforts. SEO is an ongoing process, not a one-and-done deal.
6.Wrapping Up: Embracing the SEO Long Game
Remember, friends, SEO isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme. It’s a long-term investment in your digital presence. Sure, it can be frustrating when you’re putting in the work and not seeing immediate results. But trust me, that consistent effort will pay off. So lace up those digital running shoes, pace yourself, and remember: in the SEO world, slow and steady really does win the race. You’ve got this, marathon runner!
Now, I’m curious: What’s your biggest SEO challenge right now?
Drop it in the comments below. Let’s brainstorm some solutions together!

Ch. 57: The Things We Deserve
CW: Mentions of a Suicide Attempt
TUESDAY - WINTER 9
Lewis’ curses from the Festival of Ice had not gone entirely unanswered. Though a day late, the temperature had plummeted overnight, and the townsfolk of Stardew Valley woke to a frigid, ice-encrusted wonderland.
Poor news for Achilles, who despised anything under 20 degrees. That being said, he was anxious to get out of the house, which he feared would seduce him back into the dregs of depression from which he was still struggling to break free. Unwilling to break anymore bones in his body jogging on the slippery sidewalks, he opted for a second day at the spa.
*****
It was slow going—he wasn’t the world’s greatest swimmer, and never would be, but that was… fine. Just something to keep his body moving, his mind occupied. One stroke, two strokes, red strokes, blue strokes…
“Achilles?”
He emerged from the waters to see Alex standing at the opposite end of the pool, 25 meters away, backlit by the pale blue fluorescent lights glowing softly through the steam.
“Hey! There you are, I was looking for you.”
A prickle danced down Achilles’ spinebut perhaps it was merely a draft blowing through cracks in the walls, cooling his damp, warmed skin. He raked his fingers through his hair, buying himself a second before paddling back towards the shallow end where Alex was waiting. “Hey yourself.”
“I stopped by the farm. You weren’t, um, answering your phone. But I ran into Maru, she told me you might be here.”
“Oh yeah? She tell you that before or after you broke into my house again?”
“I didn’t break into your—I promise I’m not a stalker, man, I only did that because you were MIA for a week.”
“I’m joking, Al.” Achilles had reached the edge. He rested his arms along the wall, a few inches away from a pair of well-worn blue sneakers, and looked up at the man standing above. “I just left my phone in the locker. What’s up?”
“I, uh. Well. I got the job.” With an uncharacteristically shy smile, Alex extended his arms to the sides and performed a little squeaky spin across the wet tiles (“That’s so dangerous, what kind of lifeguard are you?”). “Thought you should be the first to know. Or, I guess, third, technically, but my grandparents don’t really count…”
“A thing like that! Congratulations, I do believe this calls for a celebration.” In his excitement, Achilles half-lifted himself out of the water before thinking better of it and dropping back down with a small splash that splattered the fleece of Alex’s grey joggers. “Ah, sorry. I’d give you a hug if I wasn’t all wet.”
“A hug? An actual hug? From the Achilles Robinson? Wow!” Alex chuckled and squatted down to better meet Achilles’ eye level and return the offered the fist bump. “Nah, it’s ok.”
“Well, I’m not surprised. I knew you’d get it.”
“Did you, though? Did you—”
“Yes. Yes I did.”
They exchanged grins, and with another laugh, Alex shifted to a more comfortable position, taking a seat on the tiles and leaning back on his arms as Achilles continued to wade in the water.
“I’m excited. Even without the overtime, I’ll be making more money, so my grandparents are also excited… but I’m excited to really swim again. With all the extra time and an actual schedule now, I’ll be able to really get back into the routine of it all. Really try to take it seriously, ya know?”
“Yeah! Artemics XXXX, here we come, baby—”
“Yeah, yeah, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I’m old for a swimmer…”
“You’ll be 26 going on 27 when it rolls around, you won’t be that old. If Peter Lee can win gold at the age of 35, why can’t you?”
“When did you become an expert in Artemic gold medalists?”
“When you decided you were going to make a run at it again. Or should I say a swim at it?”
Alex smiled at the rather lame joke and scooted criss cross applesauce closer to the edge.
The lights were buzzing. Achilles hadn’t minded it while swimming, but in the silence that sat between them now, the noise felt obtrusive, suppressing the unspoken words and unsaid wants that otherwise may have found their way to a home well received.
“I wouldn’t have done it, you know. Without you.”
Achilles sent a light splash over the wall. “What’d we say about kissing my ass? You would’ve handled it fine. It was an interview, it’s just talking, you’d have figured it out.”
“That’s not what I meant.” Alex wrapped his finger around his shoelace. Gave it a little tug and watched it unwind before repeating the process again. “I don’t think I would’ve even gone for it without you. Any of it. The promotion, swimming… I mean, I always knew there was more out there. I just… never realized I could actually go for it until you came along. Never realized I could try again. Just needed a kick in the pants, I guess.”
Ah…
That was enough sentimentality for today. Already, the words were grating his conscience, the remains of his own sense of self. Achilles dove back in the water, reemerging in the middle of the pool.
“Come. Join me. Alex’s Return to ProSports Training Session #1—”
“I didn’t bring a change of clothes.”
“So?”
“I don’t want to walk back home in wet underwear, it’s cold.”
“Okay, then don’t? Go commando, bitch.”
Alex laughed and stood to kick off his shoes and socks. Achilles was denied a full striptease though (for which he was slightly disappointed, though he would never admit it to himself), for Alex only rolled up his sweatpants to his knees before returning to the edge of the pool to soak his feet.
“How have you been feeling lately, though?”
“Oh.” Me again, huh? Always me… “Fine. It… comes and goes.”
“Yeah? You want to talk about it? Are we coming or going right now?”
Achilles had to bite the inside of his cheek. “Coming. Kind of. That’s why I came out here, actually, was feeling a little… well, I thought perhaps a little change in scenery would be… nice. Something warm, some peace and quiet…”
“Oh, do you want me to leave?
“It’s a public place, Al, I can’t tell you to leave.”
“But do you want me to?”
“No, stay. Please.”
There was another beat of silence that only the lights filled. And when Alex’s curious gaze became too much, Achilles dove back into the water and continued his swim.
*****
He should’ve felt happy for Alex.
And he did—really, he did. Happy, excited, vindicated, proud—he was all of it. It’s what Alex deserved.
But why couldn’t he be only it?
Why did he also feel like shit?
Well, it shouldn’t have been too much of a surprise, this gut wrenching twist that always accompanied someone else’s good news… This was how it’d always been for him, even though, as he reminded himself as he had countless times over the past season, he knew his friends’ success had no bearing on his own.
The paths you tread are parallel, not shared. One person’s accomplishments shouldn’t get in the way of your own growth.
Wise words from his father, once upon a time. But logic never did manage to trump the clinging stench of jealousy.
Aye, just get over yourself, my dude…
Easier said than done of course, but nevertheless done easier when he finished his final lap. Twenty or so minutes after Alex’s arrival, Achilles slowly made his way back to the shallow end of the pool, now ready to return to the real world, away from the voices bristling inside his head.
And seeing Alex at the edge of the pool, his nose slightly scrunched as he held his e-reader an inch from his face, his lips parting slightly as he muttered the words, further dulled the edge of Achilles’ bitterness.
You deserve everything you want, he thought, as he treaded slowly forward.
“Bit of a role reversal, wouldn’t you say?”
“Huh?” Startled, Alex looked up from the tablet.
“Me swimming. You reading.”
“Oh. Haha, yeah… more like trying to read, I guess. My brain is woozy. I’m just trying to finish before the new season drops. 700 pages! Books shouldn’t be allowed to be over 300, man…” Alex set the tablet aside. “Slow progress, but hey, it’s progress. Look at you, though! The rate you’re going, you’ll be competing against me soon enough. Who’d have thought you were scared of swimming just earlier this year?”
“Oh, I was never scared of swimming specifically…”
Was it something in his tone that gave it away?
He watched as Alex tilted his head every so slightly to the right. It wasn’t confusion, nor necessarily concern, that lined his face… no, it was something more akin to a… reserved sort of anticipation, Achilles decided. Atop a thinly veiled curiosity. Like a judge waiting for a confession to only confirm what he perhaps already knew.
Would it be too much to say what he wanted to? Too heavy? The words were on the tip of his tongue for the first time ever, demanding to be spoken aloud, and tasted of longing and desperation.
Would it ruin the mood?
Would it ruin what they had?
Achilles steadied himself against the wall, choosing to sit perpendicular to Alex’s line of sight. No, it was never swimming that he feared. He remembered the frigid waters, the dull buzz of a motorboat, the flash of sirens…
He took a shallow breath, and said, as nonchalantly as he could, “They say I tried to kill myself that night.”
Alex, to his credit—it was not unlikely he had already put it together on Spirit’s Eve—didn’t flinch. “Were you?”
“Eh. Depends on who you ask.”
“Mmm, and if I ask you?”
“I don’t know. No, really, I don’t know—I mean, you saw on Spirit’s Eve. I put a life jacket on. I feel like that piece of evidence does point to one version of the story. My therapist always insisted it was an ‘unconscious cry for help.’” Achilles tone was casual, his shrug and dry chuckle unforced.
He thought back to what the Shadow King had said to him. It had offered, if not the total truth, at least clarity. “Personally… I don’t think I cared much one way or the other.
“Apparition had come out. It was, as you know, received somewhere between panned to lukewarm by the literary community.” Here, Achilles gave a mocking little bow alongside a twitching, self-aware little smirk. “Finally had an Eddie Bloomsbury review in Gilliterate—what I had always wanted—and it was 2 stars. I felt like shit.
“I just thought it was so funny, what you said earlier about learning not to give up because of me, because like, come on. I’m a huge fucking hypocrite, man. Swore off my whole career—one that I really loved—over one badly reviewed book.
“I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t want to write anymore, I felt like I didn’t deserve to want to write anymore. Leave it to the professionals, Achilles. The people who actually had the talent and the skill. People who weren’t coasting on their family name. Of course, not being able to write just pissed me off even more. I was angry. I was aimless. And then I was depressed.
“I didn’t know what to do anymore. I thought I had my whole life, my whole career, figured out, and then almost overnight learned I wasn’t actually cut out for what it was I wanted, and, well, you’ve see me when I have nothing to do. It drove me crazy.
“So my friends took me out one night. Took me to a club, tried to distract me, cheer me up. They were a good group of people. I got drunk, managed to slip away. You can’t blame them. It was dark out, it wasn’t hard. Scurried away to the pier…
“I don’t know why I went for the water. Maybe because it was quiet. Maybe because I was just drunk and tired and wanted to nap and the boat was the closest thing to a bed. Maybe because I thought that being out there, away from the lights and the music, you know, just me and the ocean and the stars in the sky, I would… find something. A sign? From the universe? Clarity? I don’t know. You know how it is. That feeling, when you’re so desperate for answers. The hope that maybe if you just… connect with nature, connect with the universe, some… thing will lead you to answers…
“But next thing I knew, I was waking up in a hospital with zero answers and my mum and dad crying by my bed. That hurt like a bitch, having to see that, let me tell you… They sent me to the nicest fucking clinic money could buy for a month. It was great. I was high on meds half the time and I didn’t have to cook! Ever!”
A moment of only somewhat manufactured levity. Achilles waved his arms gleefully in the air until Alex managed a snort.
“Well, maybe not great. But not… baaad. I got out, and I did feel somewhat better—like logically, I knew I was in a better place. Or ought to be. I had a therapist, still. Eva was great. But there was this… constant bottomless pit in my stomach, and I felt that if I just stopped for long enough, I’d… I don’t know. Fold into myself? Or collapse into myself, maybe, and I’d just get lost and fall and drown in it all. I mean, clearly I needed something to do. I’d take anything.
“Well. You know what happened next. Went to BRLO. Lived my best life until I could finally admit to myself that it wasn’t really my best life. And then I came here. Gotta say, it hasn’t really been my best life either, but for a bit I think it was still a pretty good one… the end of Spring admittedly blowed, but Summer got better, and Fall ever more so. Until the mines.
“Maybe it was inevitable. Everything crashing back down. After all, I had never quite solved the problem that had sent me allegedly jumping off a boat in the middle of the ocean in the first place. I still have no idea what I should be wanting to do in life. But for a bit, the Valley seemed to trick me into forgetting that it mattered.
“But down there, in the mines… and Spirit’s Eve, too… the things I saw…” Achilles voice grew flatter as he remembered the terror of the mines, the screaming spirits pounding against his skull, and the Shadow King. He didn’t want to dwell on it. Not now, not even with Alex. Perhaps he never would. “The things they said… They brought it all back…
“And even now, it’s just… everyone else is doing so… well. Abigail’s living her best life, Elliott’s got his book, Leah’s art is taking off, you’re…” He tossed Alex a small, sad smile. “You’re doing great. And I just feel like I’m falling behind—which I know is illogical, and I’m really happy for all of you, I swear that I am, Alex, I’m so, so proud of you, and you deserve it. But…”
He clasped his palms together, entwined his fingers as he leaned against the wall of the pool.
“Everyone is doing what they want to do. What they’re meant to do. And they’re all happy, and I’m not. I’m not doing anything. And I know it’s petty and it’s not right, and I know it’s selfish and stupid, it’s like I’m six fucking years old, but I can’t help it.”
Achilles, his face now glum as he stared into the waters below, gave his feet a halfhearted little kick.
Alex’s tone, however, sounded oddly cheery given the conversation at hand. “You considered getting back into advertising, didn’t you? You said you had some offers. You said maybe you would try again, that you thought it could be better this time. That’s definitely something!”
“Ahhh…” Achilles glanced over to see Alex mirroring his kicks in the water. If he was honest, Alex’s support for his Hyacinthian corporate career was just a bit disheartening, even if it was clear the words were being wielded only to support. “I turned them down. All of them. Yesterday.”
Oh.
The sharp jerk of his head was almost imperceptible, the raise of his eyebrows only but the tiniest inch—but even so, these minuscule motions that signaled Alex’s apparent enthusiasm at Achilles’ reveal were not missed. And each was an arrow through Achilles’ racing heart.
“Yes, despite the alarming pile of evidence to the contrary,” Achilles drawled, continuing off of Alex’s wide-eyed blinks, “I do still think the Valley’s been… good to me. I don’t think it’s time to go just yet… But I’m just… scared, Al.”
Achilles shook his head in an attempt to stave off any unwelcome emotion. “I don’t have any regrets, I think, turning it all down. At least, not yet. But I’m scared that I’m wrong. I was good at it, Alex, shouldn’t I want to go back? I just… I don’t understand why I’m so caught up with wanting what I know I shouldn’t want, why I insist on living off of daydreams I can’t even bring myself to fully commit to. I can’t even finish writing a goddamn outline.”
He forced himself to laugh. “It’s just… you saying what you did earlier? About how I pushed you, or whatever you said? I just thought it was so funny. Because I’m such a hypocrite. Right? Like seriously, how pathetic I am, how easily I give up on everything when it doesn’t go my way. I know I’ve got my farm and my arrangement or whatever with Shane—that sounded strange, disregard— and Penny mentioned possibly doing some substitute teaching, but I just… none of that is a life, right? None of that’s living for me, it’s just… something to do.
“I miss having a… mission of sorts. Goals. Direction. A larger purpose. I want to be… I want to be important. And I know that’s stupid, and I know the whole fame and glory is ridiculous and stupid, but I mean, I don’t know how to stop wanting that. I mean, that’s the whole reason I wanted to go down the mines even though I knew it was a stupid fucking decision—”
“No you didn’t.”
“What?”
Alex gave a little matter of fact shrug. He was still kicking his feet in the water like a kid, sending droplets careening back into his own face. “You just said you wanted to go down the mines, but you didn’t. I remember you telling me that morning, you didn’t want to go. And you weren’t lying, I could tell. It wasn’t glory at all, you only did it because you had to.”
“But the Shadow King—” Achilles stopped himself short.
What had the Shadow King said? That Achilles had wanted to go down—wasn’t that right?
A tiny piece of glory peaked its head and you had to jump on it.
Yes. And he’d allowed himself to believe it.
But Alex was right. That wasn’t quite true, was it? In fact, if he were honest with himself, he had never truly wanted to go down at all. It’s not like he had been that busy during the Fall, Yoba knew there was nothing preventing him from joining Abigail if he had truly wanted to. If he had wanted to, actually wanted to, he would have dived right into training alongside her—but no, he had always found excuses. Up until the last minute when it became clear he no longer had a choice.
He should’ve wanted to go down—he remembered the conversation he’d had with Alex at Abigail’s birthday. It was, mortal danger aside, on paper, right up his alley. And clearly the Shadow King had chosen to latch onto the thought. But the truth of it all? The price for the promised glory in this instance was never one he had wanted to pay.
So what did that mean?
“Maybe…” Achilles spoke slowly as the thoughts came to him. “Maybe I need to stop waiting around for something to want. Maybe that’s the lesson here. It doesn’t matter what I fucking want. It never did. Maybe that’s the way to finally start a new life—”
But Alex quickly interrupted. “I mean… I don’t know. I don’t think so, Ash. I don’t know… sometimes you just have to do things you don’t want to do. For you, that was the mines. But that’s… that’s like, different. You didn’t have a choice then. But you do now, in… what did you say? Starting your new life? You have a choice now.”
Hmm. Achilles gave his head a little shake. “I guess I just wish I had a thing again, you know? You know. Like the rest of you. Specialization of labor, that’s what led our ancestors to like, ditch hunting and gathering or something, right…”
“You’re asking the wrong person, man.”
“I wanted to be a scholar of sorts, but I suppose I was destined for agrarian society all along…”
“Achilles, you’ve lost me.”
“You never took a world history class?”
“How many times do I have to tell you, Ash, I’m stupid—although, yeah, I did, actually now that I think about it… but really, you expect me to remember anything from it?”
They both chortled. It was nice, Achilles thought, as he watched and counted the seconds it took for the ripples from Alex’s flutter kicks to reach his chest. How casual this was. He didn’t need an intervention, or overly concerned gazes and hinted, indirect questions that only served to close him off even further. He just wanted an ear and a friend.
“You miss writing, don’t you? You miss that being your ‘thing?’”
“I don’t know. I’d like to think so, but I mean, I just wanted to be fucking famous, didn’t I? So is it really the writing I miss, or the book signings?”
“I think you miss it.”
“I shouldn’t.” Achilles sighed. “Every time I picked up a pen this past year, I just couldn’t stop thinking about the last time I tried. And what happened. The humiliation. How it ended. The fact that it did end… That’s a sign in and of itself, isn’t it? Where my priorities lay? All my talk, but I can’t commit. I just want to let go. Let go of the… wanting of it all.”
Alex withdrew his feet from the pool and stood, making his way to the little cart of towels nearby. “For what it’s worth, Ash… I don’t think you’re a hypocrite. And by your own standards, I don’t think you should think that either… I mean, you know you better than I know you of course, I don’t mean to speak for you…”
“No, by all means, Alex.”
“I just noticed you keep saying “should,” Ash—  ‘should want,’ ‘should miss,’ ‘should do…’ and I just… I don’t know. I don’t think you’re really… listening to yourself. Or something.
“I think you just have… never felt like you really deserved to write again. I mean, you just said it yourself. You feel like you ‘shouldn’t’ want to do it because the universe sent you a sign in the form of Eddie Bloomsbury six years ago that this path supposedly wasn’t for you.
“I think that’s why you never let yourself commit to it this past year, in the way that you always encouraged me and Elliott and Leah to go after what we wanted. Because in your eyes, the things we want are the things we should want—things we’re good at, things we like. Things that other people appreciate. That’s what you told me once, right?
“I think your… problem… was just that you were… I don’t know, so focused on finding what you thought you were supposed to want, instead of what you actually wanted. I don’t think it’s ever been a question regarding your commitment, Ash. The past six years… I think it’s always been a question regarding what it is you think you deserve.”
Achilles clambered out of the pool—was it his imagination, or was Alex following the line of his bare body as he padded across the tiled floors?
“How did you make peace with your past, Alex? The shit your dad said to you, how did you learn to move on?”
Perhaps he shouldn’t have brought up his dad. Although, then again, Alex himself had never shied much from the topic, had never spoken of it with shame or embarrassment. Even now, Achilles studied the faint smile of Alex’s lips, the gentle curve of his neck as he gazed pensively up at the ceiling, taking a minute to gather his thoughts.
“Time.” Alex gave what looked to be almost an apologetic shrug. “I wish I had a better answer, but honestly, that’s most of it. I mean, I still struggle with it sometimes. Feeling worthless. And stupid. But, you know, I haven’t seen him in like 13 years, and I’ve been lucky enough to surround myself with better people since then.
“To be honest, I think I’ve actually made a lot of progress just this past year, even. With… you around. Going back to what I was saying earlier, how you’ve… helped me this year. Pushed me.
“I don’t know, I forget when it was, but there was just one day I was feeling kinda blah. Maybe we were going for a run or swimming or something, but you were just… saying things, and I don’t know. It was kind of eye-opening. Just thought to myself, well if someone I admired so much, whose opinion I really respected, found it worth their time to help me and believe in me and care about me, then why couldn’t I do the same for myself?”
“Do you believe in me?” The words slipped out by accident. A pathetic ask. One bound in longing and a need for affirmation, and in that moment, Achilles wondered if he had truly always yearned for fame and glory or whether it’d just been this right here all along.
Alex smiled in response, a soft twinkle in his eyes as he tied the laces on his left sneaker, then his right.  “We all do, Ash. Hey, think about Elliott—he’s in your line of work, you always said he was a good writer. He clearly respects you. Admires you. Trusts you to read his stuff. Don’t you think that means something?”
But Achilles didn’t want to think about Elliott right now.
I want to hear it from you.
Perhaps there was something in his eyes—a childlike yearning for approval, an obvious desperation for confirmation, for acceptance, for acknowledgment—for Alex’s gaze softened to something more tender as Achilles neared.
“I believe in you more than anyone, man. And not just because you’re my best friend. But if we’re real, it doesn’t matter what I believe if you don’t listen to me when I say it.”
The words—or was it the steady way Alex was watching him?— seemed to flood his body with a warmth far surpassing that of the spa’s heated waters. For a moment, his anxieties grew silent, his dissatisfaction dissolved, and he felt at peace.
This he wasn’t imagining. Alex unrolled a towel from the cart near him, ignored Achilles’ outstretched hands to sweep it over his shoulders himself, clutched him closer, raked his fingers through his wet hair, brushed it out of his eyes —
“Oh thank Yoba you two are still here.”
The charge between them splintered like ice.
Maru had suddenly arrived, huffing and puffing, her red braids bouncing as she skidded into the spa breathless. “I came to warn you—there’s a storm blowing in. Folks are stocking up, I’d get to Joja asap. They say it’s coming in really fast, and it’s coming in bad.”
*****
Aware that his ability to handle the cold was significantly worse than the rest of the town’s, an alarmed Achilles quickly changed, ready to race for supplies and beat the storm.
Alex, on the other hand, was unperturbed as he half-tackled the front doors, tumbling out first to face the fierce winds already beginning to blow. The clouds overhead were thick and dark, thundering between shades of grey and pale gold, but the snowless grounds indicated they had not yet unleashed their fury upon the Valley.
“Some storm,” he called, rubbing his gloved hands together. He gave an anxious Achilles, who was waiting on the other side of the glass still in the lobby, an encouraging nod, even though Achilles could clearly see the branches of the surrounding pines violently swaying back and forth. “This is nothing, we’ll be fine, come on—you didn’t see this coming, though, weather boy?”
With a huff, Alex wrenched the door open again, allowing a sweeping wind to blow Achilles near off his feet as he stumbled out into the biting air.
“Oh fuck me—‘this is nothing,’ my ass—”
“Ah heck, I forgot you’re from, like, desert country—”
Alex removed his scarf and tied it tightly around a violently shivering Achilles’ still-damp hair. “Why didn’t you bring a hat?”
“Sorry, m-mom. I’ll do b-b-better next time—”
“You need a thicker coat, dude.” Only Achilles’ rapidly numbing limbs prevented him from shoving Alex off as the man proceeded to also remove his own puffer jacket and gloves. “No one told you the Winters are a lot colder here than they are in both Monstera and Hyancinthia, huh? Figured you would’ve researched the climate before moving… Now don’t you freeze on me, you weenie, I’ll race you to Joja.”
*****
Alex, naturally, sped ahead, but an unlucky tumble sent Achilles slipping across the first falls of sludgy snow and careening twenty feet down the mountain.
“You know, fuck this shit, maybe I really am better off moving back to Hyacinthia,” he grumbled, seizing Alex’s offered hand and clambering up from the icy mud.
“No, it’s too late. You already said no, I’m afraid you’re stuck here for forever, bud.” Alex swiped at the clumps of snow sticking to Achilles’ leg—rather dangerously close to my ass, Achilles thought, somewhat torn between waving him away and letting those hands continue to reach for his pants. What a shame the motion was accompanied by Alex’s high-pitched attempt at a Muppet impression. “Please don’t leave me, Ser Achilles, I couldn’t bare it for even a second.”
Achilles twisted to both avoid Alex’s artificially wide-eyed plea and to better examine the damage. A clammy, wet streak of mud was now smeared along the back of his thigh. “Fantastic. I look like I just shit myself.”
With a click of his tongue, Alex straightened back up rather abruptly. “Pretty picture.”
“Almost as pretty as you.” And with an exaggerated wink, Achilles hurtled down the trail back to Pelican Town.
*****
“You sure you don’t want to stay here the next few days?” Alex yelled over the winds as they heaved bottles of water and canned vegetables into the Mullner household.
They had had to battle their way through JojaMart. The tourists trapped at Sunspray Peak who had been unable to book a room at the saloon had made the drive down to stockpile for the upcoming days. Shelves were bare and lines were long, but through it all Alex and Achilles had bickered and bantered to pass the time.
It wasn’t a totally unwelcome offer, hunkering down with the Mullners—the snow was falling thick now, swirling through the open front door as they returned back out to the porch, and Achilles didn’t much fancy the trek home.
But he shook his head. Never mind the prospect of being snowed in with George—he wasn’t sure how well he’d be able to resist snowbound temptation, anyway, not in his fragile headspace and Alex looking the way he did in that stupid ass old letterman of his. “I couldn’t leave poor Voltaire all alone, no, the poor cat has already suffered enough this season.”
“You sure? You can bring him back here, maybe there’s still time. Dusty won’t mind. I just don’t know if I trust you not to freeze to death.”
“I’ve got a fireplace.”
“Sure, you’ve got wood?”
“You got me there. Okay. I’ve got a heater. I’ve got two tubs of arugula. What more can a boy need? But thanks for the offer.”
Achilles knelt to grab the aforementioned two tubs of arugula, along with additional groceries and cat food. Already, visibility was frighteningly low, the snowflakes large and wet as they clumped quickly along the cobblestone paths.
As he bent down, the tail of Alex’s puffer coat slipped up at the exact moment a speck of snow decided to drift its way down across the exposed strip of his back. The chill was electrifying, and he instinctively jerked up, only to slam his head into something hard—
“Ow! Achilles—”
“Fuck! What the—”
He stepped dizzyingly backwards to see Alex bent at the waist, cradling his nose.
“I’m sorry—shit. I’m sorry! Yoba, why’d you bend down—”
“I was trying to help you—”
“I can manage two bags of groceries, Alex—”
“Man, now you’ve done it. I think you’ve broken it.” Alex straightened to dab his nose with the back of his pointer finger and check for blood.
“It’s not broken, it’s not even bleeding—”
“You don’t know that. I could be bleeding internally, that’s even more dangerous they say—”
Achilles couldn’t help but laugh—he leaned against the door frame, doubled over as Alex continued to milk his pain. God, he felt good, but oh, he really ought to head back…
“—and it’s the best part of my face—”
“That’s a joke right? How many women have I had to witness fawn over those green bean eyes of yours—”
“—and in the middle of a snowstorm. Gonna have to walk a whole two minutes to Dr. Harvey now—”
“Good luck getting that guy to answer his door during off-hours—”
“—why’s your head gotta be so dang hard, huh—”
“If I kiss it will it make you feel better?”
A beat of silence, then Alex dropped his hand. Shot him a narrow-eyed, rueful look.
“Maybe.”
Achilles hadn’t expected an affirmative. Well, semi-affirmative. Then again, he wasn’t sure what he had expected at all. Whatever it was, he’d been prepared to laugh it off and head home, but in that moment, Elliott’s words from the day before crept into his head.
Can you meet him halfway?
He leaned forward, arms stiffly at his sides as they each clung to a Joja bag, and for the barest fraction of a second, brushed his lips against Alex’s nose before taking an abrupt step back.
“That’s all you’ll get from me right now, you can send the hospital bill to my secretary. You stay warm now.” And, refusing to wait around a second longer for Alex’s reaction, Achilles tore down the ramp and sprinted home.
*****
Oh.
Oh?
Alex stood frozen on the porch, watching Achilles hurtle through the already four-inch thick spread of snow. He should’ve let him go sooner—what were you thinking?—the storm was growing worse with every second and it was nearly two miles to Strawberry Farms. Thank goodness for Maru! Without her warning, they’d have really been in trouble…
Heck, he should’ve offered to help him carry back his groceries, it was already starting to get dark.
Man, what’s the matter with you? For shame!
Even after Achilles’ tracks were the only trace of him that remained in sight, Alex continued staring across Pelican Town, a small furrow in his brow, his fingers tracing the bridge of his nose.
“Shut the door, boy, what are you doing? It’s freezing. Come now, help your grandma set the table…”
With a jump, Alex bolted inside to the kitchen.
Dinner was a quiet affair. Evelyn had cooked his favorite meal, honey garlic salmon, to celebrate his promotion, but he found he hadn’t much of an appetite. Even George had noticed his lack of chatter, had asked if everything was all right.
But Alex had only shrugged, smiled wanly.
“I’m ok! Big day, you know. I’m just tired.”
As if.
He felt like champagne.

Montague, in which a man attempts to defy the physical impairments from a stroke by scaling a glacier. Also this month, original character Emily Penelope returns with another flight of fancy in “Operation: Stepmother Dearest” by Pete Fernbaugh. "Our stories this month were originally performed on the long-running anthology series, Escape," Fernbaugh said. "In many ways, this series, along with Suspense and Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, are the exemplars of the golden age of American radio drama. We hope our show can bring some traffic their way." Building Your Dream Pool: Everything You Need to Know About Pool Builders
Tumblr media
A pool can turn any backyard into a personal oasis. With the right planning and expert pool builders, your dream pool is closer than you think! In this guide, we’ll explore essential information to help you understand the pool-building process, common topics everyone should know, challenges involved, a step-by-step guide, a case study, and a conclusion to wrap it all up.
1. Common Pool-Building Topics Everyone Should Know
Understanding Different Pool Types
One of the first decisions you'll make is choosing between different pool types. Each type of pool has its benefits, but here are some of the most popular:
In-Ground Pools: Often seen as the most luxurious, these pools are custom-built and can be created in almost any shape.
Above-Ground Pools: These are affordable, easier to install, and portable. They are an excellent choice for budget-conscious homeowners.
Infinity Pools: Also called “vanishing edge pools,” they create the illusion of water extending to the horizon, adding elegance and aesthetic appeal.
Lap Pools: Designed for fitness enthusiasts, these pools are typically long and narrow.
Materials Used in Pool Construction
Pool builders use various materials depending on the pool design, durability needs, and personal preference. Common materials include:
Concrete: Known for its durability and customization options, concrete allows pool builders to create unique shapes.
Vinyl: Often found in above-ground pools, vinyl is an affordable option that provides a smooth finish.
Fiberglass: This low-maintenance option is popular because it’s durable, easy to clean, and pre-molded into specific shapes.
Understanding the Pool Building Timeline
Building a pool doesn’t happen overnight, and knowing the timeline helps set realistic expectations:
Design Phase: 2-4 weeks
Permitting and Approvals: 3-6 weeks
Construction Phase: 8-12 weeks
Finishing Touches: 1-2 weeks
2. Challenges in the Pool-Building Process
Building a pool is an exciting journey, but it comes with some challenges. Being aware of these will prepare you to make informed decisions along the way.
Permitting and Zoning Restrictions
Every region has its own set of rules, and permits are typically required before construction can begin. Pool builders will need to ensure compliance with local zoning laws, and obtaining permits can take a few weeks to several months.
Weather Delays
Pool construction is highly weather-dependent. Rain and other adverse weather conditions can delay progress, especially during the excavation phase.
Unexpected Costs
Although pool builders provide estimates, unexpected costs can arise due to site conditions, material choices, or design changes. Always budget for a contingency fund to manage unplanned expenses.
Maintenance and Upkeep
Pools require ongoing maintenance to keep them in top shape. Regular cleaning, balancing chemicals, and ensuring the filtration system works properly are necessary for longevity. Understanding these requirements early on will help you maintain your pool with ease.
3. Step-by-Step Guide to Building Your Dream Pool
Now that you're aware of the pool-building basics, let's break down the process step-by-step.
Step 1: Decide on Your Pool Type and Design
Discuss your vision with the pool builders and decide on the pool type, shape, and additional features like a spa, waterfall, or lighting. This is where customization and creativity come in.
Step 2: Budgeting and Financing
After deciding on the design, calculate a realistic budget. Financing options are available through many pool builders and can help make your dream pool more affordable. Keep a contingency fund for any unexpected expenses.
Step 3: Obtain Permits and Schedule Inspections
Your pool builders will handle the permitting process, but understanding the need for approvals from local authorities is essential. This phase may include land surveys and safety inspections, ensuring your pool is compliant with local regulations.
Step 4: Excavate the Site
Excavation is the most labor-intensive part of pool building. This is when your backyard transforms into the foundation of your pool. It’s essential to have professional pool builders for this stage to ensure accurate measurements and adherence to safety standards.
Step 5: Build the Structure
Depending on the type of pool, this stage can vary. For concrete pools, pool builders will install rebar and pour concrete to create a strong frame. For fiberglass pools, the pre-molded shell is placed and adjusted for stability.
Step 6: Plumbing and Electrical Installation
At this stage, plumbing and electrical systems are installed. This includes pipes for water flow, filtration systems, and any lighting or heating elements you’ve chosen.
Step 7: Add Finishing Touches
Once the structure is complete, the pool is finished with tiling, decking, and any custom features you want to add, such as fountains or underwater lighting. These details make the pool unique to your preferences.
Step 8: Fill and Test Your Pool
The final step involves filling the pool with water, testing the filtration and heating systems, and balancing the water chemistry. Pool builders will perform a final inspection to ensure everything is functioning properly.
4. Case Study: Building a Family Oasis with XYZ Pool Builders
Meet Sarah and Mark, a couple who dreamed of a backyard oasis where they could relax and entertain. After consulting with several pool builders, they decided to work with XYZ Pool Builders, a company known for its custom-designed in-ground pools.
Step 1: Design and Planning XYZ Pool Builders worked closely with Sarah and Mark to design a rectangular in-ground pool with a shallow entry for kids and a deep end for diving. They added a spa section for relaxation and selected premium tiling for a sleek look.
Step 2: Handling Permits and Challenges Despite some initial delays due to local permit requirements, XYZ Pool Builders managed the paperwork and kept Sarah and Mark informed. nobody want to wroetomd anymore thank you for carrying this tag ☝️ any headcannons? any ideas on how they confessed their feelings to each other? i’m starved
I KNOW IT BREAKS MY HEART 💔
They're both oblivious idiots tbh so it took a few years before Harry caved and just kissed him and Chris was like "oh". Literally everyone around them knew they were falling for each other except those two.
I like to think they go back to Jersey/Guernsey every year and go the where they used to film videos together and the same little cafe and just reminisce on when they were young dumb and very much in love with zero idea how to express it.
They take it in turns planning a special date every month. Chris is always super cute and will take Harry to some expensive candle lit dinner, go for an overnight spa retreat, just downright spoil his man bc it's what he deserves. Meanwhile Harry is just like "Yeah so I booked us to go skydiving."
I wrote this in my fics but I'm obsessed with them wearing their wedding rings on little chains around their neck. Harry would absolutely lose his in a week if it was on his finger tbh. Plus this way they can rest the gold bands against their heart when they're sleeping.
