This is my first full week tutoring again, and I always love the dramatic variety. Today I'm meeting with a computer engineering student applying to graduate school and a middle schooler struggling with math, reading, and writing because of dyslexia. Tomorrow I meet with an 80 year old man who is hoping to learning how to use is Dell Laptop as well as his wife! So cute.
I just spent the morning doing some research on Structured Literacy and the Orton-Gillingham Approach for Dyslexic students. We should be teaching reading like that for everyone anyway! I know I'm a bottom-up thinker, but... it seems obvious to me! LMAO

How to Choose the Best Online Dyslexia Tutor for Your Child?
Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty that can significantly impact a child's ability to read, write, and spell. Fortunately, with the rise of digital learning, specialized online tutoring for dyslexia has become more accessible, providing personalized support for children with dyslexia. Choosing the right online dyslexia tutor for your child can be a daunting task, but with careful consideration of several key factors, you can make an informed decision that will greatly benefit your child’s educational journey.
Understand Your Child's Needs
Before you begin searching for an online dyslexia tutor, it is crucial to understand the specific needs of your child. Dyslexia can manifest in various ways, and children may have differing levels of severity and associated learning challenges. An educational psychologist or specialist in learning difficulties can provide a comprehensive assessment of your child's strengths and weaknesses. This assessment can help pinpoint the areas that require the most attention, allowing you to seek a tutor with expertise in those specific areas.
Qualifications and Experience
When it comes to online tutoring for dyslexia, qualifications and experience are paramount. Look for tutors who have specialized training in dyslexia and are certified in evidence-based programs such as the Orton-Gillingham approach, Wilson Reading System, or Barton Reading & Spelling System. These programs are designed to address the unique learning needs of dyslexic students through structured, multisensory, and systematic instruction.
Experience is equally important. An experienced tutor will have a track record of working with children with dyslexia and can provide testimonials or references from past clients. This experience allows the tutor to adapt their teaching strategies to fit the individual needs of your child, ensuring more effective and personalized instruction.
Personalized Learning Plans
One of the significant advantages of online tutoring for dyslexia is the ability to create personalized learning plans. These plans should be tailored to address your child's specific challenges and leverage their strengths. During the initial consultation, discuss how the tutor plans to assess your child's progress and adjust their teaching methods accordingly. A good tutor will set measurable goals, provide regular progress reports, and be open to feedback and adjustments as needed.
Teaching Methodologies
Effective dyslexia tutors use evidence-based methodologies that cater to the unique learning styles of dyslexic students. Multisensory teaching, which engages multiple senses simultaneously, has been proven to be particularly effective. This approach might include using visual aids, tactile activities, and auditory exercises to reinforce learning.
Additionally, technology can play a significant role in online tutoring. Interactive tools, educational software, and digital resources can enhance the learning experience and make sessions more engaging. Ensure the tutor is proficient in using these tools and integrates them into their teaching practices.
Compatibility and Communication
The rapport between the tutor and your child is crucial for the success of the tutoring sessions. The tutor should be patient, encouraging, and capable of building a positive relationship with your child. During initial meetings or trial sessions, observe how the tutor interacts with your child and whether they can create a supportive and motivating learning environment.
Communication is also key. The tutor should keep you informed about your child's progress and be willing to collaborate with you and your child’s school teachers. Open lines of communication ensure that everyone involved in your child's education is working towards the same goals.
Flexibility and Accessibility
Online tutoring offers the convenience of flexible scheduling, which is especially beneficial for busy families. Discuss the tutor’s availability and ensure that it aligns with your family's schedule. Additionally, consider the platform used for tutoring sessions. It should be user-friendly and accessible, ensuring that technical issues do not hinder the learning process.
Cost and Value
While cost should not be the sole determining factor, it is important to consider your budget when selecting an online dyslexia tutor. Compare the rates of different tutors and weigh them against their qualifications, experience, and the quality of their services. Sometimes, investing a bit more in a highly qualified tutor can result in better outcomes for your child.
Conclusion
Choosing the best online dyslexia tutor for your child involves careful consideration of their specific needs, the tutor's qualifications and experience, teaching methodologies, and the ability to build a positive rapport with your child. By focusing on these key factors, you can find a tutor who will provide effective and personalized support, helping your child overcome the challenges of dyslexia and achieve their full potential.
Investing in quality online tutoring for dyslexia can make a significant difference in your child’s educational experience, providing them with the skills and confidence needed to succeed academically and beyond.

Can Constant Tutor Support in Distance Learning be Ensured?
In prior days, "Orton Gillingham Tutor near me" engaged with distance learning used to connect with their understudies through phone, faxes or letters. The turnaround time between the student's accommodation of work and the instructor's corrections was generally lethargic. In any case, today with the most recent innovation being utilized for distance training courses, and the effective sight and sound connections among instructors and understudies, the correspondence is practically progressively and now and then even continuously. Effective mentor support in distance learning is to a great extent subject to how quickly a distance schooling educator can get acclimated with the innovation being utilized, devise new showing techniques, and oversee understudy assumptions.

Dyslexia Online Tutoring: Read to Improve Reading Skills Long-Term
Dyslexia is a reading disorder that can make it difficult for a person to match letters, words, and sentences. Approximately 10% of the world's population deals with dyslexia in one form or another, which makes it imperative for students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia to receive specialised tutoring from those experienced in the field. In today's digital age, many dyslexia online tutoring services have made their way into mainstream education as an alternative to traditional methods carried out in person by Orton Gillingham teachers. The Learning Studio offers up an interactive learning environment where children work on phonics and reading skills.

The Reading Center and Urban Ventures celebrate three years of partnership
Tumblr media
Urban Ventures is in its third year of a fruitful partnership with The Reading Center, based in Rochester, Minnesota. The Reading Center (TRC) is the only nonprofit in the region that offers a full array of services for dyslexic students and their families, including tutoring and training for teachers and parents. Over the years, they have trained 2,500 adults and educators in the Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach and helped 14,000 students improve their reading ability.
Kendra Peterson is the Director of Reading Plus, Urban Ventures’ literacy intervention program. Her connection to The Reading Center began when her son was diagnosed with dyslexia. Kendra is an experienced classroom teacher with a Master’s Degree who felt she still needed more tools and training to help her son learn to read. She enrolled in TRC’s Basic Orton-Gillingham Institute to train as an Academic Language Therapist, going on to complete the Advanced Institute as well. In 2018 Kendra pitched piloting the Reading Plus afterschool program at Urban Ventures, utilizing The Reading Center’s OG teaching approach to provide high quality reading instruction to UV students who are behind grade-level in reading.
Tumblr media
The program started with 12 students and 1 OG tutor. It has grown tremendously, now serving over 100 kids in just 3 years with 5 UV tutors trained by TRC working with small groups. Each student attends two-1 hour reading sessions a week after school at UV or onsite at one of our partner schools during the day. Scaling the program to meet the demand has not been easy, but Kendra shared that it is worth the work, and the support provided through the partnership with TRC has made it possible. Kendra has watched her students gain confidence and recently heard from one of her student’s teachers that one developing reader just handed in the best essay in the whole class!
The Reading Plus program helps students in 1st-8th grade improve their reading. This year it was discovered that there were a handful of 5th and 6th grade students enrolled in the program who, despite their motivation and hard work, were nonreaders or were too far behind their peers to realize success in the small OG groups.
To help these students catch up, TRC tutor, Jenna Bergendahl began 1:1 intensive tutoring for 3 students twice weekly for 1-hour sessions, beginning this January. Even after a short time the students have made great strides. For the first time, one of her student’s learned how to spell his last name and Jenna smiled as she heard him go and announce it to a teacher in another room. Another student took home a reading game to play with his dad and the third has been motivated by learning to read books about soccer.
Jenna was previously an early childhood educator at a dual language school. She enrolled in TRC’s Basic OG Training in 2020, shortly after her son was diagnosed with dyslexia. Now she is not only helping her son learn to read using the OG approach, but she is also able to share her talents with her community. Jenna lives within biking distance to UV and is thrilled that her oldest son has even been able to participate in UV programs while she is tutoring.
Tumblr media
Partnerships like this are key to the success of our community. As Cindy Russel, director of The Reading Center, said, “Urban Ventures has been a delight to work with, always focused on the needs of their students,” adding that TRC loves sharing in the success of the students.
Urban Ventures hopes to continue expanding access to expert instruction. When you donate to Urban Ventures you help fund programs like Reading Plus and provide a pathway for more students to lift themselves up and learn!

No running!
I didn’t run Sunday because I spent a lot of time on my feet spectating my daughter’s 5k. I attempted to take the kids to the pool, but unbeknownst to me the pool was closed for the afternoon due a a district-wide aquatic staff meeting. Fortunately my son had brought along racquetball supplies to play after swimming, so instead we just all hit a racquetball around on the court.
Monday morning I had a meeting at school for my daughter*, followed by an 11:00am podiatrist appointment that I had to Uber downtown for to get there in time. Didn’t feel like taking more time away from work to run, so I didn’t.
I brought my run clothes to work today but am not sure my legs are up to it. While I feel like I ought to get in at least a mile or two plus some time on the stair-mill, as the old saying goes “the hay is in the barn”. Nothing I do now will make me more prepared for Saturday.
* Pretty sure I’ve shared my son is on the autism spectrum (high functioning) who has comorbid ADHD/impulsivity presentation. Well my daughter’s been diagnosed with ADHD/inattentive presentation along with a “non specified learning disorder” which I’m pretty sure is some constellation of dyslexia symptoms. I think she was too young to fully pin that label on her when she was tested, but she’s been getting tutored in the Orton Gillingham** method for a couple of years now. We just had one of the annual IEP (Individualized education plan) meetings for her. We’ve been having much better success with her teachers than with my son’s.
** The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia.

My Local Competitors
Researching local competitors for a tutoring service in Niagara was pretty easy since there are actually a lot of tutoring businesses out there (without even looking at independently owned ones).
The Reading Gym
The first one I came across was The Reading Gym, which I know pretty well since I used to volunteer there during my undergrad. With that being said, I did gain a lot of valuable experience from volunteering with them and they even wrote me a great reference letter that helped me get into my post graduate degree program. If I am being honest though, when looking at their website, it’s not great. It is boring, unorganized and does not catch your eye. It is a very informative website, but it is hard to navigate. In terms of marketing position, they seem to be mainly focused on speech therapy and they are primarily for children. When looking for reviews, there were testimonials on their website but it could be hard to tell if they are legitimate or not. There were no reviews when searching for them on Google and only 3 reviews on their Facebook page. However, all 3 reviews on Facebook were 5 star rated. Their Facebook page consisted mostly of updates about their holiday hours and closures. As for pricing, The Reading Gym charges $80 per 30 minute session. In my opinion, that is pricey! In terms of strengths, they are well established in the Niagara region, especially with the two school boards and they seem to be doing quite well for themselves, having recently just added a fourth location. In terms of weaknesses, they only use one language approach- the Orton Gillingham Approach- which is a very simplistic one and they are expensive.
Tutor Bright
Tutor Bright is an in-home tutoring service, with multiple locations across Ontario and Winnipeg. When scrolling through their website, it looks very professional, helpful and heavy on promotion. They seem to be known province wide, having been on CityTV and they have a clear marketing position of being stress/hassle free for parents, offering assistance in every subject and affordable. I was not able to find pricing on their website though. It appears to me that you need to set up an assessment with them first to see what kind of services your child would need and then pricing would pertain to that. It was hard to find reviews on them through Google, but Facebook showed a lot of 5 star ratings. In terms of Facebook, they seem to be very active on their social media and continuously post inspirational photos about education. Their Facebook page is very engaging. As for strengths, they are well established, a huge company with tons of locations. They appear to be a trusted corporation. As for weaknesses, they seem to be more of a big corporation with little community involvement, as opposed to somewhere like The Reading Gym, that serves only Niagara and is based in Niagara.
Oxford Learning Centre
Oxford Learning Centres is a tutoring franchise with locations all across Canada, the U.S and the middle east. They only have two locations in Niagara and none in the Lincoln region. Their website is professional looking and tells you everything you need to know. They offer tutoring assistance in every school subject and are a very well known company. Finding reviews on Oxford Learning Centre was difficult. You are not able to review them on Google or on Facebook, unless you visit a Facebook page specific to an Oxford Learning Centre in your city. Even then, there were only two reviews; both rated 5 stars. I had to email them to find out about pricing since it was not available on their website. What I received back was that they charge $48 per hour, but they also charge you a $247 assessment fee before your tutoring sessions can begin. For May and June though, they were offering a promotion where they only charge $99 for an assessment fee. In terms of competitors, this was the only company that I saw charge an assessment fee on top of an hourly fee, which seems like a weakness to me. I have also heard from word of mouth that this is not a good company for tutoring. As for their strengths, they seem to be well established and offer up an abundance of services.
