10 joias escondidas sobre o desejo masculino queer
8.       Onthakan (A Hora Azul) (Anucha Boonyawatana, 2015, Tailândia)

10 Hidden Gems About Queer Male Desire
1.       L’Homme Blessé (Dir: Patrice Chéreau, 1983, France)
Masterfully acted by Jean-Hugues Anglade and directed by the great French filmmaker Patrice Chéreau, this film is a daring and ahead-of-its-time portrait of the anguishes of a young gay man in love with a manipulative criminal.
2.       The Garden (Derek Jarman, 1990, United Kingdom)
The great Derek Jarman delivers a visual and metaphorical narrative about the struggles of the gay community having to face oppression, criminalization, stigmatization and society’s homophobia. With his current collaborator, Tilda Swinton, Jarman makes an experimental movie that is very poetical, haunting and unique.
3.       Young Soul Rebels (Isaac Julien, 1991, United Kingdom)
A great exponent of the New Queer Cinema. This film touches the subjects of racism, homophobia, black and queer identity, contracultural movements, police violence, punk music, love and desire. A rare kind of film that speaks of themes rarely seen on the big screen even nowadays. It tells the story of the friends Chris and Caz, who run a pirate radio station from a tower block in Dalston, East London.
4.       Dong gong xi gong (East Palace, West Palace) (Yuan Zhang, 1996, China)
The first Mainland Chinese movie with an explicitly homosexual theme. The film tells the story of a young gay writer A-Lan who, being attracted to a young policeman, manages to have himself interrogated for a whole night. In placing the openly gay protagonist and the homophobic policeman alone in a room, the movie was able to explore the relations of power, masculinity, and repressed desire with a haunting and, at the same time, sensual atmosphere.
5.       Wild Side (Sébastien Lifshitz, 2004, France)
The film is a tender and melancholic portrait of three outsiders who love each other: Stéphanie, a transsexual prostitute; Djamel, an Egyptian hustler and Mikhail, a Russian man who works in a restaurant. Fluid and working like an everyday simple tale, the movie showcases these three characters in a very intimate and sincere way.
6.       Soundless Wind Chime (Kit Hung, 2009, Hong-Kong/ Switzerland/ Germany)
An impressionist tale of love, grief and regret which tells the story of Ricky, who leaves Hong-Hong to look for the lost soul and the past of his deceased Swiss lover, Pascal. Ricky struggles with the confusion of memories, reality and illusion.
7.       L’Armée du Salut (Abdellah Taia, 2013, France/ Marocco)
The Moroccan writer Abdellah Taia, debuts his filmmaking with an autobiographical adaptation of his homonymous novel. A crude, realistic and intimate coming-of-age about the formation of identity, sexuality and desire and that showcases the difficulties of immigrants in France.
8.       Onthakan (The Blue Hour) (Anucha Boonyawatana, 2015, Thailand)
A genre-bending love story about a bullied loner, Tam, who finds solace in the arms of Phum, a boy he meets at a haunted swimming pool. The Blue Hour is a thriller with glances of horror and teenage romance. Sometimes tender, sometimes disturbing, this film is very unlike and unique.
9.       Spa Night (Andrew Ahn, 2016, United States)
This minimalistic sensorial film is a hauntingly blurry study on repression, tradition, foreignness, desire and family bound. It tells the story of David, a Korean-American teenager who starts working in a spa to help his struggling family. There he has contact with gay men who uses the spa for sex, and this new reality both scares and excites him.
10.   Corpo Elétrico (Body Electric) (Marcelo Caetano, 2017, Brazil)
This film is a fluid and naturalistic study of the every-day-life of factory workers in São Paulo, Brazil. The protagonist is Elias, a gay young man who spends his days working in a fabric factory, having love affairs and getting out with his friends. This movie works like a chronic full of energy, love, truth and an elegant simplicity.

The Blue Hour
Tumblr media
Thai
Movie
Tropes-
Student, thriller, horror
Trigger warnings-
Murder, attempted murder, blood, mold/ moss, guns (shooting), theft, dead bodies (as well as dead birds, and a dead dog), family violence (mild to moderate), physical assault resulting in minor blood and major bruising, (almost/ attempted?) drowning, mentions of fire
Bloggers rating-
8.8/10
Summary- Tam is a bullied student who meets up with Phum at a haunted, abandoned swimming pool for a hookup, only for things to take a turn for the creepy.
Bloggers Opinion-
Ok this was a ride. I really like how this is shot, its seriously beautiful and I love the overall vibe of this. I don’t watch a whole lot of thriller or horror movies, but if I’m going to, I want it to be something atmospheric and something that I can think about for a while afterward, and this was just that. I honestly don’t think anyone fully understands what happened in this and it's very open-ended. The fact that I spent the entire time wondering if this was psychological horror or paranormal horror was really interesting, I already knew that it was going to be quite a roller coaster but it was seriously beautiful, and the acting in it felt really good. Phum creeped me out and Tam was also really morally grey, and because there really wasn’t a whole lot of other characters in this, those two helped add to the vibe.
Now, there are a lot of loose threads in this and I have some things that I keep getting stuck on while trying to sort out a theory for what happened in this. Really, one of the weirdest parts for me was right after one of the main “paranormal” parts of the movie happened, and then cutting to Tam crying in bed, lying next to Phum, who was also crying. What the fuck. When, where, how and what just happened? Also the question of what the fuck happened to Tam’s brother's body, as well as who the hell (almost) killed the dog? Was the dog a zombie? Was that first person in the garbage dump a zombie? Did the mold have anything to do with anything, or was it all just a coincidence? Is this paranormal or not??? Either way, this is so well done, I loved it. I will almost definitely watch this again.
Final thoughts- If you’re someone that enjoys horror and the triggers I put aren’t really a problem for you, my god, watch this! I have no idea what happened and I love it. Seriously a good mystery/ thriller/ drama and the overall vibe of this was just fantastic. I would love to know what you guys think!
Ending status below the cut-
As far as the couple goes, they’re on good terms with each other when this finishes, but its not really a happy ending, per say. Depending on how you look at it, it may have ended with a joint suicide?? which was fun. But the gays are still together so what does that matter, really?

The Blue Hour (2015)
Tumblr media
Summary
The story of a bullied teenager Tam who befriends and has a sexual relationship with a mysterious gay boy Phum at a haunted abandoned pool. Their affair starts out as a romance but, later, shifts to a darker territory.
Review
This review may contain spoilers
This is my first movie comment. I felt compelled to write this review because many viewers and reviewers haven’t given this movie credit for how good it is primarily because they have a preconceived notion or expectation of what the movie is before watching it and feel unsatisfied at the end because they don’t fully understand it. If you think this story is a gay coming-out/love story or a horror movie the you’ve been badly misled but give it a chance and you’ll find it to be a pretty worthwhile watch. I will admit that the first time I watched it I was confused as to what happened. Much like the movie the Sixth Sense this one made you think and required you to watch it a second time. The second time around it makes more sense. This is not your conventional horror movie or a gay coming of age love story. Think of it as the reaction of the mind because of horrors that it has to endure. The title The Blue Hour is very significant to the meaning of the movie. The Blue Hour, also known as Onthakan, is the time between day and night; dream and reality; good and evil. This is where this movie lies. My personal thoughts on what the movie means after watching it a second time. Don’t read the next section till you’ve watched the movie at least once, The story is about Tam, a High School student who’s bullied at school and physically and mentally abused at home by his family for being gay. To escape, his mind creates an alter ego named Phum. The movie goes back and forth between Tam’s reality and dreams — hence the blue hour — with the majority of the movie in Tam’s dreams. Phum is strong, independent, self-aware and confident, traits that Tam doesn’t have.
Phum essentially acts as the trigger (imagine that little devil on Tam’s shoulder) that unleashes the horrors that lie within Tam’s mind. Phum frees Tam sexually; makes him feel at peace with himself and who he is (any of their poolside chats and the rooftop scene); allows Tam to metaphorically see what his parents have taken away from him (the empty field with so much potential that became a garbage dump - Tam is accused of everything that is bad with their family, including being gay), rationalize murder to save himself (stuff that happens while he’s in the dump); and to learn how to mentally get away from it all (I think this is what the whole holding breath thing is, to be dead without being dead).
The pool represents the dirty section of Tam’s mind. The random images that show up on the pool walls that look like images of people made from crap are manifestations of Tam’s problems specifically his family that keep on showing up no matter how hard he tries to remove them. Tam nearly drowning in the pool is essentially that, Tam drowning in his problems.
Not sure what the meaning of Phum saving Tam from drowning means. However, after Phum saves and revives him, Tam admits that he can’t remember anything that happened - thereby admitting that he’s struggling between dreams and reality or maybe even good and evil thoughts. The gangsters, who Tam and Phum meet at the pool, are the manifestations of Tam rationalizing murdering his family and a willingness to give up parts of himself to do it - the whole negotiation and Phum listing all the things he’s willing to give up.
The ending scene, Tam and Phum meet at a calm river representing Tam’s mind at peace and calm. I too struggled with this movie at first. A second viewing with an open and objective mind will really make you appreciate the movie and its subtle complexities. Gun and Oabnathi did a great job acting in this movie that you wanted to believe that they were “real” couple/friendship as opposed to just that little devil on Tam’s shoulder. Thats the genius of movies like this and the Sixth Sense.

Jahnvi is here to defend her boy Sean as predicted (also omg pls dont diss Ron he had so much potential but so little screentime 😭)
Anon you have nooooo idea how amazing Sean's character is! The novel is mostly from White's pov and he's a bit unreliable cause he has no idea wtf is going on 95% of the time but! When you do see Sean's pov you can see how nice and caring he is as a person. He, and like most of the main cast honestly, is a very complex character and his motivations are pretty hard to pin down at first but it's so interesting to slowly figure out where he's coming from and why he does the things he does. This goes for other characters too because the present plotlines are driven by each characters' individual pasts and their traumas.
The story handles some pretty serious themes like childhood trauma, broken families and socio economic disparity in a very subtle but refreshing way. And knowing that they've expanded on the book's material to make the original, largely passive, plot more action packed just makes me more excited for the show. Not to mention the director has been one of my favourite directors of all time since I watched Onthakan aka The Blue Hour, starring Gun and Oab. So I'm absolutely certain Not Me is going to be a masterpiece!
(Also for the cringey parts, the closest the book came to cringe is some of the lines Sean used while flirting. I don't think we have to worry about that with the show at all.)
Wonder if Off's character as Sean in NotMe will be just as ****y as it was in that dark drama he was in on gmm25, a year ago. the plotline was so cringey.
I spend a full ass minute figuring out what ****y meant jidhuchdy, I think it's shitty? honestly I didn't dislike ron from fai sin chua at all, but it's true that off's acting in it was quite bland... the thing with off is that he's a great actor, but it definitely depends on the role he gets. every time he gets a main role or an important secondary role he slays but for the case of ron I think it had to do with him being a pretty complex character who's also not that important in the show, therefore off didn't get to immerse himself into him as much as he should've. I have no doubt sean will be on the opposite end of the spectrum, bc off always does an amazing job in main roles. also since bc of covid there’s new filming restrictions that are gonna keep any series from filming for the next few months, we’re gonna get not me next year for sure. which means off will have had more than a year to get himself in character, which is obviously gonna create incredible results. I haven't done any research on not me's plot bc I don't like being spoiled before a series comes out so I only know the few things my good friend @disaster-j told me and I am CERTAIN sean will be amazing. as for the show being potentially cringey, I truly don’t think so bc the director is incredible & the cast is incredible so I really don’t see how that could happen
