In 1515 Albrecht Durer executed a woodcut called Rhinoceros. Durer never saw the actual rhino. The image was based on a written description and brief drawing by an unknown artist of an Indian rhinoceros that had arrived in Lisbon earlier that year. In late 1515, the King of Portugal sent the animal as a gift for Pope Leo X but it died in a shipwreck off the coast of Italy in early 1516. The rhino depicted on my picture sails to Nuremberg. I am telling its story: we can see it bathing; then it is trapped; next, loaded on a vessel it accepts its captivity. A long time ago I visited Nuremberg, unfortunately, I do not remember any port on the river Pegnitz, and wonder whether any sailing ship could dock in Nurember at all.
