Anonnie, I have been saving this ask for when I felt like I could ramble about something and this is that moment.
SO, I started watching this new docu-series on netflix about the Roman Empire. And I’ve watched the first 3 episodes about Calligus and OH MY GOD THIS MAN HAS ME LOSING MY MIND!!!!
Like, I get that it was a different time and he wasn’t someone who origninally came from power but dude has issues. And it’s crazy cause he started out as someone the people AND the Roman senate loved, which wasn’t common. But he got sick and threw that all down the drain when he woke from his 3 month coma.
Trigger warning below cut: Incest, murder, death, plotting murders, suicide
Like, he gets sick and then decides that he needs to kill the person he decided would be heir to the thrown, because Calligus thought his heir tried to poison him. So he made him commit suicide with a soldiers sword since it would be frowned upon for anyone to kill a member of the royal household or have him executed.
And then! He sends his head guard, the person who helped him get the thrown and has been keeping him safe for so many years, to be the Prefect of Egypt. That was just a ploy though, because about halfway there, Roman guards appear and they get in a fight before the head guard takes his own life so that he wouldn’t be murdered.
And this man becomes so desperate for an heir he starts sleeping with his own sisters, just to keep it in the family. And he gets one of them pregnant ((he slept with all three and the one who got pregnant was already married when he made her do this)) and they all went along with it cause they knew if they didn’t they’d probs be killed too.
But spoiler alert, the pregnant sister and the baby die before she can give birth and this man will not let the mourning process move forward. Instead, he declares his dead sister a goddess and makes it so the people cannot earn their livelihoods until he’s done mourning, and if they try then he has them executed.
And his other two sisters, along with his brother in law, decide that if he does get an heir ((because he married an already pregnant woman so that he would be guaranteed and heir since she must be fertile)) they’ll no longer be considered royal/they’ll be unneeded so he’ll have them executed or exiled. None of them wanted that tho, so they decided they needed to kill him.
And that’s as far as I am so far but I love it and I cannot wait to watch more once I process. Also, I probs spelled names wrong and if I did I’m sorry
