Hey TT! What are some of your favorite South Indian films from old and current times?
Hellloooo friend!
That's an endless list (esp. the Malayalam comedy classics from the 80s and 90s), but here's some of them: Kilukkam, Chithram, Godfather, Sandesham, the Dasan and Vijayan movies, Manichitrathazhu, Manaar Mathai Speaking, Achuvinte Amma, purely the comedy bits of Thenkasipattanam and Kalyanaraman, Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi, Sudani from Nigeria, Ohm Shanti Oshaana, Bangalore Days, Charlie, Kunjiramayanam, Godha, Rani Padmini, Joji, Alaipaayuthey, OK Kanmani, Velai Illa Patathari, Maari.... I haven't watched many Telugu or any Kannada movies so I don't really have any from those industries.

Reflecting on a Sabbatical
I just completed three months of sabbatical at Automattic and rejoined work last week. It's been one of the best life experiences I have ever had and it changed my life, my perspectives, and even me, as a person!
The very day I joined Automattic, six years ago on a warm summer morning, I read about the sabbatical benefit in one of our internal documents. I was excited knowing that I could take three full months of (fully-paid) leave from work, once I complete five years here. The possibilities of what that entailed excited me. Since I had not had the privilege to travel a lot at that point in time, most of my sabbatical dreams revolved around travel. I pictured myself venturing on a Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi-style bike trip from Kerala to Tawang, revisiting Kasi’s and Suni’s OG-bike trip from the classic Malayalam movie. I dreamt of renting a car and partaking in a road trip across the United States, visiting all 50 states in one long trip OR saw myself backpacking around Europe. For a brief fleeting moment, I even pondered recreating a motorcycle journey undertaken by a certain Mr. Ernesto Guvera and his pal Alberto Granada through the heartlands of South America!
When it was time for my sabbatical in June 2022, I would do none of these things.
It is interesting how the passing years change your perspectives and thoughts. Though in my case, the change in my perspective came only a few months back, in April-May 2022, as I spent my days cooped up in a lovely hotel room in Barcelona, Spain, under quarantine for COVID-19. When you are thousands of miles away from home, in a strange land, where people speak a different language that bears no resemblance to your loved ones, and alone... and feeling sick, that changes your perspectives. It was a hard reset for me. In between bouts of coughing, sneezing, fever, and long naps; I found myself lost in thought, pondering, reminscing, reflecting, day-dreaming...
These questions kept coming back to me. As I closed my eyes, I could see the faces of my wife, and our three cats - as if they were right beside me, in bed. "Come home soon!" they all told me in unison. That was my moment of clarity. I realized, that more than everything in this world, my loved ones - my small family, meant everything to me. Spending time with them helped me grow and blossom throughout the years. Their love and care for me were my fuel. When I would take time off from work for several weeks, I decided to spend it in a way that would bring me with the most joy: with my loved ones, and with myself. :)
And when I finally went on sabbatical, that's what I did!
I will not bore you with the details of what I did for my sabbatical, but I will tell you that it was truly the best three months of my life. I saw myself getting copious amounts of rest, sleeping for eight hours every day. Reading lots of books. Meditating. Journaling. Spending time with my wife and my cats. Meeting some of my closest friends. It was everything I could ask for, and more. Even as a person that is passionate about work, I shut myself off everything work related, even social media (barring Instagram). I found myself in deep rest. Relfecting at all my life thus far, thinking about how my life ahead would look like. I found my attitude changed, towards the positive. I saw own psyche undergo a positive transformation. I realized new truths about life, about my own self. What my place was in this world, and in this universe, and what I should keep going for the rest of my life.
I effectively pressed the pause button on my life, and I loved it.
Three months sped by before I knew it. Before no time, it was mid-September, and time to get back to work. You would think that spending three months away from work, would make one detest or loathe getting back to work. On the contrary, as I approached the end of my sabbatical, I eagerly counted days until it was D-Day. It has been a week since I returned to work, and I couldn't be more excited! If you have read this blog before, you may know that I have a special emotional connection to my work. I really enjoy it, especially seeing the impact of what I do. As I returned to work, I feel even more energized and encouraged to keep doing what I do best.
My sabbatical reminded me that one needs to pause in life, to spend some time and look into themselves. Because when we keep running this giant race called life, you never know when you will trip and fall down.
Epilogue
My travel plans are still on! I work for a distributed company with an open vacation policy. I could travel wherever I want, whenever I want. :)

Survey of Malayalam Film
Recently I learned that the decade I was growing up and watching Malayalam movies is widely known as a decade of decline, which is not surprising to me looking back at most of the bullshit I saw in theaters with my family. But after some extensive research (wikipedia page for Malayalam Film Industry 🙃), I’ve learned that pre-2000 and post-2010, a lot of Malayalam movies are beloved for strong storytelling and audiovisuals! I’m starting a project - I’ve curated a list of movies that make up a solid survey of Malayalam film, the 80s and 2010s being the most represented. List below! Will update with thoughts as I watch!

Bollywood Movies Part CLXXXI: The Mollywood Takeover Part XXIII
5 Sundarikal is a collection of short films about love. In Sethulakshmi the title character (Baby Anikha) is a girl who collects wedding announcement photos and decides to take one with her friend Abhilash (Chetan Jayalal). In Isha Jinu (Nivin Pauly) meets Isha (Isha Sharvani) after breaking into her house and finds her strangely cooperative. In Gauri Gauri (Kavya Madhavan) follows the romantic clues her husband Jonathan (Biju Menon) has left on their first wedding anniversary, only for tragedy to strike. In Kullante Bharya a neighborhood marvels when a tall woman (Reenu Mathews) and her much shorter husband (Jinu Ben) move in. In Aami Ajmaal (Fahadh Faasil) goes on a business venture at night, while his wife (Asmita Sood) gives him riddles to solve.
TW for movie: child abuse (Sethulakshmi), suicide (Gauri). Of these short films, I liked Kullante Bharya and Isha best. Dulquer Salmaan’s narration really gives Kullante Bharya life. Both of the child actors in Sethulakshmi give wonderful performances. Overall a decent collection of short films. Favorite songs are Manthara Katte, Mazhaneer, and Ekantham. None of the songs have subtitles.
Kasi (Dulquer Salmaan) and Suni (Sunny Wayne) go on a road trip from Kerala to Nagaland to find Assi (Surja Bala), the woman Kasi loves. As Suni and Kasi travel, they meet a wide variety of that they help and who help them in turn.
Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi is an amazing road trip movie that also deals with social and political issues. The main driving force of this movie is Kasi and Suni’s friendship and it is performed wonderfully by Dulquer Salmaan and Sunny Wayne. I especially enjoyed how the film got actors from Bengali and Manipuri cinema, such as Surja Bala and Dhritiman Chatterjee who was good as village leader Bimalda. Favorite songs are Thaazhvaaram, Neerpalungukal, and Neelaksham. None of the songs have subtitles.
Karthi (Dulquer Salmaan) and Riya (Malavika Mohanan) elope, fight, and return to their respective homes. Their refusal to reconcile leads their fathers (Jayaprakash and Lalu Alex) to conspire to bring them together.
Pattam Pole is about two stupid kids who can’t get over themselves and communicate. The movie is boring and predictable. I did like Archana as coworker Sherin. The actors were good but they could not make the story more interesting. Favorite songs are Antha Naalil and Mazhaye Thoomazhaye. Neither song has subtitles.
#the great venture into Bollywood#becomes the great venture into malayalam cinema#sethulakshmi is based photo by m. mukundan#kullande bharya is based on the tall woman and her short husband by feng jicai#neelaksham pachakadal chuvanna bhoomi is inspired by the motorcycle diaries which itself is based on che guevara's memoirs#which makes sense given all the communism#favorite of these is neelaksham pachakadal chuvanna bhoomi

Hey TT! Since u are a Varun fan, I wanted to ask, did u watch the movie October yet? If not, do u intend to watch it? and if yes, how was it for u? Also any good movie recommendations? Could be old, new, from any culture, whatever u enjoyed watching recently...
Hey anon!
I haven’t watched October yet, because it seems like a movie you have to be in a veryyyyyyy specific mood for, y’know? A slow, contemplative and meditative mood, where you’re willing to give the movie time to unfold. I do intend to watch it though. I like that Varun is taking chances and mixing it up in his movie choices, rather than going a predictable route.
Hmmm movie recs. I haven’t been watching movies as such lately, but here’s a list of some movies I really really love (and have rewatched many times), in no particular older:
Rani Padmini (Malayalam): A road trip movie with two very different women (one a put-upon housewife stuck in a restrictive marriage, the other a street-smart con on the run), who forge a lifelong friendship through various shenanigans. So funny and heartwarming.
Ever After: A lovely, grounded retelling of the Cinderella story.
Jhoom Barabar Jhoom: I know this movie got a lot of hate, but idk why? It’s so funny, and I love all the characters and their dichotomies so much.
Blast From The Past: One of my favt.rom-coms OF ALL TIME; with the Purest male lead ever. Ever. So wholesome.
Bangalore Days: Ensemble movie with all my favt. contemporary Malayalam actors; filled with everything I love, romance, comedy, strong platonic/familial love, etc.
Alex and Emma: Another lesser-known rom-com; about a blocked writer and his opinionated stenographer, who just won’t stop butting in while he tries to dictate his novel to her (that he needs to finish like, NOW, coz he needs to sell it to pay off the Cuban mafia that he owes money to.) Keeps weaving in and out of the novel and real life, very funny and hits all the best rom-com tropes.
Khoobsoorat: The original with Rekha. Make it a double feature with the new one starring Sonam/Fawad!
Gol Maal: Not the Ajay Devgan crap; the one from the 70s. Still one of my all time favt. classics ever.
Ohm Shanthi Oshaana: A rare female-gaze-centric through-the-ages love story. Bonus: Nivin Pauly at the hottest he’s ever looked.
Matilda: My favt. book despite being very outside the intended age range. A rare movie that does justice to the book.
Socha Na Tha: Jab We Met is good and all, but this is really my favt. Imtiaz Ali movie. Excuse Abhay Deol’s hair, and see him for his potential cute/hotness!
Fools Rush In: Matthew Perry being Chandler some more. But this time with the very hot Salma Hayek!
Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi: Slice of life road-trip buddy movie, that has a major part set in North East India, WITH REAL NORTH EASTERN INDIAN ACTORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO YOU KNOW HOW RARE THAT IS FOR A MAINSTREAM INDIAN MOVIE????? VERY. RARE.
Someone Like You: A heartbroken woman tries to rationalize why she was dumped, going so far as to author an article cooking up a scientific theory comparing men to…. cows. Meanwhile she moves in the office bad-boy-with-heart-of-gold PLAYED BY HUGH FUCKING JACKMAN. Sexy Soft Wolverine? Mmmmmmmmm yes pls.
Bollywood/Hollywood: Rahul Khanna, fake relationship trope, a Shakespeare-obsessed grandma, what’s not to love?
Hysteria: A period rom-com about the invention of the first vibrator. Despite the topic, not vulgar at all! Strong, admirable female lead who has all my heart! Plus the very cute and charming Hugh Dancy.
Charlie (Malayalam): A non-conventional young woman gets obsessed with the enigmatic previous tenant of the place she’s renting, and sets off to find him.
Flipped: A cute kids’ movie about a boy and a girl who are neighbours and their feelings for each other which are always at odds.
Pyaar Ke Side Effects: An underrated battle of the sexes Bolly rom-com.
Celeste and Jesse Forever: Y’all know I love me Andy Samberg. This movie proves he’s capable of more than just comedy. A tale about two best friends/soulmates navigating the breakdown of their marriage. Be warned, it’s a weepy one. Keep tissues handy.
The Skeleton Twins: Keeping with the SNL alum theme; this one has Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig as twins who grew apart, but are thrown together by circumstances caused by their own brokenness. I love love love movies about non-romantic love, and this is one of the best I’ve ever seen.
Samsaaram Aarogyathinu Haanikaram: A cutesy movie about a smart-talking salesman who’s forced to shut up when the government bans talking in order to prevent the spread of a disease that’s transmitted by speech. It goes into a silent movie mode in the second half, and they’ve done that bit quite well. (Also, it features the gorgeous Madhoo, of Roja fame!)
Yes Boss: My ultimate happy-making SRK movie. I just love this movie so much.
#just realised my mallu movie recs are very dulquer heavy#can't help it#acting wise he's just above average but his choice in movies is exemplary#movie recs#tt answers
