For the first time in its history, Call the Midwife fans have a two-part Christmas special to look forward to ahead of new episodes in the New Year.
Rather than the traditional 90-minute instalment, the BBC has confirmed that there will be two 60-minute episodes, which will also include a Christmas cliffhanger.
"Who doesn't love finding an extra, unexpected present underneath the Christmas tree?" said creator and writer Heidi Thomas OBE.
"When I was asked to write a two-part Christmas special for 2024, I couldn't resist!"
Executive producer Dame Pippa Harris added: "For the first time, viewers can luxuriate in a two-part festive treat this Christmas. Heidi has created a spellbinding special which I know will delight our loyal fans."
Director of BBC Drama Lindsay Salt hailed Call the Midwife as "one of UK television's most popular festive traditions".
She continued: "And this year we wanted to go even better, with Call the Midwife's biggest Christmas ever!
"Heidi and the team have lined up an absolute treat, with two irresistible episodes packed full of everything fans will love about this very special series at Christmas time."
All of the "well-loved characters" will be back for the two-parter, which picks up in Christmas 1969.
The midwives are "all busy delivering babies and doing the job they are most dedicated and committed to", while Poplar also welcomes a funfair, which adds "a burst of colour and excitement to the frosty landscape".
But there will be challenges, including influenza and the Hong Kong flu, not to mention an escaped prisoner.
As the neighbourhood prepares for a carol concert, "fears grow that he may be in the local area after a spate of break-ins".
Elsewhere, "the Turner children are caught up in the fever surrounding the Blue Peter Christmas appeal to collect dinky cars and scrap metal, Trixie makes a fleeting visit to Nonnatus House and is delighted to see her brother Geoffrey, and Miss Higgins has her grandson Harry stay for Christmas".
Violet also has her hands full hosting a mince pie competition, "but the Buckles' preparations for Reggie’s homecoming are thrown into turmoil".

My latest post on AO3 is not a fic but an overview of labor statistics for Call the Midwife Series 1-12. You can get a quick look at the mums, birth locations, if it was on screen, nurses/doctors present, baby number and gender, and any other medical notes. I was doing this for my own fic writing but thought I would share for any others who might find it helpful.

Also, let me know of any ideas you guys have for it! I can set up different channels for characters. We could have a quiz channel if you like. Honestly, any ideas let me know! I want to have a fun little place for us all to be able to interact instantly

Call the Midwife Ep 4
Some thoughts
So…
Moon landing !! Loved that so nice seeing Sister Monica Joan bursting with pure happiness.
TB … that poor family didn’t expect the death not going to lie. Yet no mention of the turners when it came to Shelagh and her Tb. I wasn’t that surprised because CtM and continuity aren’t exactly a match made in heaven
Nancy.. I’m glad she got what I’m hoping is some closure for her. Not knowing what has happened to you family must be hard and that just have helped with her grief process. Her protecting Collette at the end is totally understandable and justified and I’m pleased she got that beautiful storyline. But I feel it could have been tied into Shelaghs time with TB.
The Pupil midwives … that must have been hard for Joyce to come forward and tell the facts of what happened. The act of “telling on” other staff is still an issue the NHS faces today as well as many other workforces but she done the right thing. Although personally I would have called out Trixie before the events happened. Leaving to take a phone call for a start and then for clearly rushing.
Trixie … I’m taking her separately because I really felt for her this episode. Midwives make mistakes and it’s a horrible feeling knowing you have caused harm on a mother and that it could have been avoided.
Trixie and Matthew… I’m not willing to comment really. Because my blood is actually boiling. With the rumours of Olly Rix leaving the show I wonder if they are trying to make him unlikable so we don’t care if he ends up leaving. However he had no right expecting that of Trixie. CtM has showed the great changes in married women in the workforce way back from Chimmy continuing to work to Shelagh and now Trixie. Chummy and Shelagh did adapt how they worked because anyone with kids will tell you that you can’t go back to working the same way you did before kids. I feel Trixie would have had to do the exact same and shifts like on call and night shifts aren’t always as feasible for people who have family commitments and kids. But still if anyone can make it work it’s Trixie but only if Matthew allows.
That’s all I have to say at the moment

I can only Nancy’s reaction to finding out Shelagh was a nun in her former life.
Wasn’t clear if Nancy was at the dining table when Sister Hilda lamented Sister Bernadette, ex-nun, planning the centenary… so in my head, maybe she didn’t know Shelagh was a nun until Sister Veronica brought it up.
One thing I love about Nancy is her “tell it like it is” bluntness without much regard to her audience (“Honest to God, sex, who needs it?!”), along with being a bit nosey. It’s fun to think about her asking Shelagh point blank after that meal how she went from holy orders to marrying the local doctor. And Trixie with a knowing smile, being the only nurse who knew her as Sister Bernadette. 😉
Any lovely writers out there want to fic a missing scene?

"What better place to show you our progress than in the Nonnatus House dining room - perhaps the location most central to our drama, and the room where all our stories really happen.
"That remark may seem surprising. Surely the birthing room is the most important driver of the action? Or the darkest parts of Poplar?
"Yes, those places are important. But the one indispensable scene in every episode is the place where our characters can share their thoughts together, and comprehend things that have happened to them as a community.
"It's the place where we shed light on our characters' personalities - how they might interact with each other. Also, it's a place for humour. And cake!
"In this shot, director Syd Macartney discusses the important elements of the forthcoming dining room scene with Jenny Agutter (Sr Julienne) and the team.
"A dining room scene takes longer to film, because there are usually lots of people present. Each character will have their moment for dialogue, or a reaction to someone else's words. In an ensemble drama like ours, every character has something to say - even if they're not speaking."

@sicktember Day 11: Beginner's Guide to Faking Sick
Julienne honestly didn't know who she was more frustrated with this morning. She didn't doubt for a moment that both Monica Joan and Veronica were unwell, and spring colds were always unpleasant. However…
For the last three days, they had both been running her utterly ragged. Pillows needed rearranging, tea was required, no actually she'd prefer lemon barley, a book was needed, no not that one, a different one. She hoped it was just her recent lack of sleep, but Julienne was increasingly convinced she might strangle one or the other of them.

Determined Destiny - Adelaide Reynolds/Nancy Corrigan
A/N: A quick little intro fic for these two.
Every so often Nancy would wonder why she was so sure Colette had chosen to push them together. Adelaide even now, months after they first met, is quiet, calm, steady and warm. Had she known she would ever be blessed with such a gentle soul, someone as quietly kind and completely lacking in will to judge, she would have never believed it. Now, as she watched Adelaide tease Colette into laughter, she can’t help smiling. Colette may have pushed it, using Christmas and Mistletoe to push, nudge, beg them to try, just try, acting on their feelings, she had to admit the girl had been right, Adelaide was the perfect fit for them, not at all judgemental but happy to see them both. People could never know, of course, it was not the done thing, but she knew from the secretive smile Sister Monica Joan gives her every so often, people knew and looked the other way, choosing to be happy that Nancy was finally free of the heavier burdens in her life. Later, of course, she settles to the meal with Colette and Adelaide, watching with a slight smile as Adelaide coaxes Colette to keep eating her greens, the subtle teasing employed to encourage the girl warming her heart all the more. Adelaide’s care for her daughter had made her sure this, this feeling, this pull to love and trust Adelaide was worth it. Adelaide, her gentle voice and sure smile, sooths them both, even when she settles alone with Nancy to work on her papers, watching Nancy knit and plan. It's a new start, a new life and they both know this is a miracle. One they should never ignore.
