"percabeth should be pronounced perkabeth because of the c" ffs it's percy not perky?? It's not an actual word it's a combination of names.
The name is a soft c, it's pronounced like "Per-see", short for Perseus.
Why tf would it be perkabeth? In what world does Percy + Annabeth make perkabeth?
#if i hear it one more time i will scream#it makes my insides squirm around like a bunch of bugs getting scared by a stick#percy jackson#annabeth chase#percabeth#percy jackson and the heroes of olympus#heroes of olympus#pjo#pjo hoo toa#shipping discorse? just the name though#book series#name pronunciation#shipping

Random thoughts/questions on Cassandra Cain's name
Random thought but do you think anyone in-universe has mistakenly though Cassandra Cain was a Kane? Because I'm fairly certain those two surnames should be pronounced the same right?
While the names may be spelt differently, it does kinda make me wonder if some random Gothamite heard that "Bruce Wayne adopted a new kid called Cassandra Cain" and assumed it was Kane because Bruce's cousins are the Kanes and so that seems like the obvious first thought when hearing the name spoken in that context.
Does any of this mean anything? Not really I guess. Just a thought which crossed my mind.
Actually... a quick question for Cass fans; how often does Cassandra even use the surname Cain? Curious about this, since from what I've read of her backstory... David Cain sucked (biggest understatement of 2024 so far); so possibly not someone Cass would want to associate with him taking his name.
Does has ever go by Cassandra Wayne after getting adopted?
Still a novice at comics and slowly consuming more; but this panel from Batgirls (2022-2023) #11 comes to mind; when Maps asks for Cass' last name, Cass seems to just kinda ignores her and moves the conversation along.
Still though, from what I've read around Tumblr and stuff; Batgirls doesn't seem to be considered too good in terms of characterisation and so I am curious if the subject gets discussed elsewhere.
Definitely am having quite a bit of fun learning more about these characters and their history, on that note.

Just wondering but how do you pronounce your name? :) Also luv your writing!!
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH ISTG 😭😭
As for my name "Remy". It's kind of hard to explain how to pronounce it tbh🥲. The 'e' is pronounced like the 'ae' in aeroplane (American English). And the 'y' is just pronounced like 'ee'. So all together its kind of like 'Raemee'. I hope its understandable 😭 But tysmm for asking because most people get confused and pronounce it completely wrong

Some of the names I've pronounced wrong. I don't get it with fantasy. I've given up tbh
Sirus (i pronounced it as s-ai-rus instead of serious. How it's pronounced as serious I'll never know. I got to know if from the films)
Ginny (i thought 'g'inny instead of 'j'inny. Again, how?)
Dorian (dor-ee-un instead of dor-ai-un, HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW? )
Chaol (Ch-aa-ol instead of ke-ol. Tf?)
Celena Sardothein (Do i even need to explain myself here?)
Babes, i didn't even bother with the names coming forward after the second book of throne of glass. Wtf Sarah J Maas?
SO MANY MORE FROM SO MANY FANTASY BOOKS BUT THESE ARE THE ONES TO OF THE MIND FOR ME RN
(i have no clue whether i was able to explain in properly but of well)

What is the correct way to pronounce Baljeet's name in Phineas and Ferb? The various characters on the show all pronounce it different ways so I'm not sure what the right way is. Some say "bal-jzeet", some say "ball-jzeet", some say "bal-gee-t", etc. Is one of these pronunciations better than another?
Thanks

idk if it's controversial, but why is the mispronouncing of slavic names so widely accepted? so people say stuff like "oh, americans (it's not just americans) find it too hard to pronounce thing correctly so they just don't". bruh.
it happens with lots of poc and lots of people talk about it (at least in the online spaces i'm in) but rarely do i see anyone saying a word about a koh-wall-skee or pad-ah-leh-kee or other such nonsense. and yes, i'm aware that jared padalecki pronounces his own name like that and imo it's a shame he doesn't even put in the effort of knowing his history and saying his family name correctly.
the one time i ever heard it be addressed besides salty rants among other slavs it in wolf 359, the space podcast. one of the characters is first gen, her parents are polish and she has a thing where she discusses her past and the way that people couldn't ever be bothered to say her name and i felt that.
her last name's minkowski. it's pronounced meen-koh-v-skee. it should theoretically be minkowska, cause it's a type of name that gets varied depending on one's gender, but such things are not done in the english language and slavic immigrants have made their peace with it.
but the subject of names comes to my mind a lot lol
i'm trans and full time slavic, so when i was choosing my name i was choosing knowing i'll probably stay here. thus, my name brings me some issues online, tho obviously not as much as some other people's names, poc or celtic or other slavic ones.
anyway, the mispronouncing pisses me off and so does the reluctance or outright refusal to learn. hope i did the english pronunciation guides correctly, cause i'm (obviously) not a native speaker

Just letting people know, your effort counts. Don't ditch your attempt to say it, if you've never said it. Don't ditch, if you said it wrong. Don't default to a nickname if you said it wrong or there are sounds you cannot make because its a different language. Make an effort, try. Have them say it slowly and try to write out the pronunciation using the sounds and letters that you know. If you expect them to address you properly, then expect that they expect you to address them properly as well.
People from different cultures who learned to speak a different language deserve to have the respect of being called their name properly, or as close as you can do it.
It can make a world of a difference to that person and make them feel seen and respected.
I use to teach a group of kids who had non-English names or spelling/pronunciation variants of English names. A whole roster of them. First day of class I had them all tell me their names slowly, and I wrote down the pronunciation. They thought I was annoying for making them say their name so many times. They thought I was making fun of them.
Weeks later one of them said they'd do roll call while I finished up setting up. Kid stopped and held the paper out to his friends and they were like "What's this that you wrote? By our names? Wait, wait, that's now you say my name." The kids in the room were middle school kids who already had spent enough time with peers and adults mispronouncing their names. One of the kids was like "WAIT! You've said my name right this whole time!" They asked if that was what I was doing on the first day. I told them yes. They asked why. Then I told them. "No one said my name right until my third year of college. I don't think anyone should wait that long." And to that my kids were like "Thats bullshit! Your name is a word I could say when I was 5! It's not even hard!" And proceeded to spell it, which is only 3 letters, then lists of English words that started with those 3 letters. And I told them "Yeah, I know and it makes me very happy that you guys never once said it was too hard to say or remember." To that a kid said "I hate that too! It's just mad disrespectful! Like try!"
okay okay I know the point of this is “White people need to put as much effort into learning how to pronounce Black people’s names as they do foreign European names” and 100% I totally agree, absolutely good point
but this tweet becomes hilarious in the context of this clip:
anyways, absolutely put effort into learning how people pronounce their names. just don’t feel bad if it takes you some time to get it right 😅
(also in case you didn’t watch the video it’s “N-SHOO-tee” not “SHOO-tee”)

Ok I'm going to need more physical and digital books to offer ways to pronounce character names. I'm reading a book on Kindle and had been flipping out trying to figure out how to pronounce a character's name and finally put it into Google to try (I don't like doing that tbh) but when I was thinking it was pronounced one way and it's pronounced differently I'm like 🤯 so please PLEASE authors HELP THE READERS PROPERLY PRONOUNCE NAMES

Dylan should not be pronounced the same as Dillon. It should have a long "I" sound in it.
