So I started playing NFS Unbound today. Here's your new lesbian!

Her name is Olivia (she/they), but her friends call her Liv. She's a trans car girl from Canada. She's a skilled mechanic and someone you just can get enough of. She's charismatic, funny, proud and lovable.

The car she drives is '98 Nissan Silvia K. She named it Reiko, after the all-time favorite Ridge Racer girl.

While I placed a cute little trans sticker on the back of the car, its colors are inspired by '96 Nissan 180SX I raced throughout the entirety of NFS Heat.

I just painted it blue and chose a different kind of paint and just fell in love with this powder bubblegum look. I just HAD to replicate the colors on that Silvia.

BTW while I don't enjoy the soundtrack that much, before I started playing, Halcyon was showing me her character (she already got the game from game pass) and a beautiful cover of 'Where Is My Mind?' was playing in the background, so here you have it. I love it.

Need For Speed Unbound Review

The most recent entry to the Need For Speed series, Unbound takes place in the fictional city of Lakeshore. You play as your own custom character, racing to earn your place in The Grand, and win back your car that an ex-friend stole from you years prior.

Racing games have never been my passion, but I played NFS Heat a year or so ago and really enjoyed my time with it. I gave the trial for Unbound a try, and fell in love. The game is the perfect blend of arcade-y and realistic, letting you tune your cars as you see fit, right down to whether your tyres are better at gripping or drifting, and the downforce of your car. It's the perfect game to pick up and play, and doesn't require you to spend hours and hours levelling up. You can also feasibly upgrade a B-tier car to an S+ (I took a suped-up A rank to the finals and won first try), and there's plenty of opportunities to make money.

The story is a fairly cut-and-dry betrayal tale, but still threw in a couple twists towards the end that I didn't necessarily see coming. Where the game truly flourishes is the visuals. While the cars and world are very realistic and beautiful, all the characters and driving effects have a cartoony, graffiti-esque artstyle, meaning that it never suffers from any uncanny valley.

The soundtrack is full of modern pop and hip-hop, but I found that muting the in-game music and putting on my own Spotify library made the game 10x more of a vibe.

Overall, NFS Unbound is a Riot for racing enthusiasts and casual enjoyers alike. My only gripe is that the actual story is very short, but the postgame content is a lot more freeform.

Cons:

- Soundtrack wasn't to my taste

- Story a couple hours too short
