For Them
About to go to bed and this plot idea came into my head so I'm gonna be quick.
Danny and Dani (or Ellie) are on the run from well... everything. (Bad Fenton parents? Vlad? GIW? IDK pick)
They almost escape into the zone when Ellie gets hit by something that starts destabilizing her. They escape but toss themselves into a random portal that opened up and crash land in a dark gloomy city alleyway. For a moment they think it's okay, they're safe for now but they gotta keep moving. So they do, they run and run into the city until they find a place to finally rest.
It isn't until then they realize what's happening to Ellie. Her body is destabilizing now that the adrenaline she had was going down. She starts panicking and freaking out cause she knows they don't have any ecto-dejecto.
Danny, freaking out and desperate to save her freezes her body with ghost ice to make her stop melting (basically it doesn't hurt her despite not having an ice core but instead kinda puts her in a status)
And it works.
But it sends Ellie into a deep sleep as well.
Danny, stressed and on the verge of passing out from using his ice core (and willing some of his protectior spirit into as well to keep Ellie safe in the ice), looks up when he hears footsteps coming towards him.
He passes out when he realizes the place they had hidden in, a warehouse, had already been pretty cold even before Danny had used his ice powers.
When he wakes up, he realizes hes been moved from the warehouse and freaks out and tries to find Ellie. When he opens his door from the room he was in, hes greeted by cold (but Danny isn't bothered by it) and a man, a Dr. Victor Fries, who just so happened to had been at that warehouse that night looking into stealing some valuable equipment being imported but instead had watched a young, badly hurt teen desperately try to save and have to freeze his 'sister' as she was melting in front of him.

Hi! Just sending in this ask before I forget my idea, dont answer this until your asks are open again I just want to write this down before I forget!! Boten x single father! male reader, reader works at a restaurant and Boten comes in one night and Mikey takes a liking to him, his daughter sits in the staff room and draws/plays because she’s too young to be home alone- 🦇 anon
Title: cute waiter
Fandom: Tokyo revengers
Characters: bonten
Fic type: fluff
Pairings: Mikey x reader
Warnings: male reader, reader insert, single dad reader, fluff, nameless daughter, Mikey has that weird ass rizz as the kids say
Notes:
Summary: bonten goes to a small restaurant while in town for business and Mikey falls for the cute waiter.
🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
(Name) Could never thank his boss enough for letting (daughters name) stay in the office, the elderly woman finding the toddlers company pleasant while she worked on scheduling and order's.
"(Name), could you cover booth three? I have to talk to (boss name) about the schedule" (name) looked to his co-worker who managed the hardest puppy eyes he could "fine, but you owe me"
"Thank you!"
(Name) Never knew what to expect at the small restaurant, typically it was the locals in the small town but sometimes some rich people came in and even foreigners which was a gamble on how the experience would go.
Usually they were nice though.
"Hello! Could I get you gentlemen started with water or perhaps the chef's choice of wine?" (Name) Said happily to the group who sized him up, the man in the middle just staring him down with cold blackened eyes but (name) just continued smiling and even making eye contact with them.
Blissfully unaware of who they were or what their tattoos meant.
"We will start with the finest wine you have" the white haired man with snake like eyes said simply, his rings shining under the warm lights "of course! I will be back momentarily with your wine, gentlemen" and with that (name) turned and left, bonten not missing Mikey's curious look and the lock on to the waiters ass. They all exchanged glances while their boss just ate his snacks, flipping to the dessert menu to see they had the good stuff.
(Name) Returned moments later and filled their glasses, Mikey freezing when the waiter got close to him and the white haired man could smell the others cologne faintly and nearly shoved his face into the poor man's neck if it wasn't for his self control "so tell us about yourself, Mr waiter ~" ran was going to do his boss a favor, knowing Mikey had the romantic abilities of a snail. "Ah, what would you like to know?" (Name) Was so easy going, care free "you in school?" "You single?" "You know how to bake?"
(Name) Was a bit startled by the questions but didn't see the harm "I'm not, I graduated last year, I am single and I do know how to bake, yes" (name) laughed a bit at the questions "now, what can I get you gentlemen?" Changing the topic to get to business and not have these attractive men ask every detail of his life.
Of course they ordered the nicest things on the menu, it was going to be a pricy bill no doubt but (name) wasted no time getting their order before his coworker took over his table for his break and hang out with his tot. (Name) Brought in dinner for the two, free food from the restaurant and (daughters name) got cute rice balls shaped like hearts and for dessert she got taiyaki shaped like stars and filled with custard.
"Wow you drew this?" (Name) Cheered on his kid who beamed, the owner who became their grandmother of sorts always splurged on the good coloring supplies for the little girl and finding some cute toys for the office so she's never bored.
"Why don't we show the team, yeah?" (Name) Asked the little one who bounced a little, clearly happy at the idea "let's go!" Holding his little girls hand, the restaurant was nearly dead save for the group of eight who were furious that (name) was changed out for another person but Mikeys anger quickly melted when he saw the tiny version of (name) waddle towards the elderly owner who was rolling cutlery.
"My!" She cooed and lifted the little girl up "you're so talented!"
Mikey and (name) locked eyes, the waiter offering a sweet smile and Mikey's face dusted red, (name) didn't miss the stares and the blushes on the pale man, knowing damn well the awkward blond thought he was attractive "you enjoy your meal?" (Name) Asked him casually, the blond composing himself "yeah..." His words simply and short, never the one for small talk "that your kid?"
"Ah, yeah... She's too young to be alone and my boss practically helped raise me as a teen so she just hangs here"
Mikey nodded and looked over (name) who caught his stare "would you like to go out sometime?" (Name) Thought the blond was cute, even if he barely spoke and just stared ominously.
Mikey froze, usually it was him doing that "you don't know who we are, do you?"
"...models...?" (Name) Said confused, unsure of his answer and Mikey just stared back at the man "what? Used to people not recognizing you?"
"Something like that"
"Well I hope to get to know you better, I have to get my rugrat in for her nap but I'll be back soon yeah"
Mikey never felt so complacent, nodding and even letting (name) kiss his cheek gently before going to get his daughter.

For Drabble 2:
NSFW PROMPT: “Don’t hide from me. Let me see you!” w/ Mr. Tyler Owens 🤠
So I know this is supposed to be smutty but I got in my feelings for Tyler and insecure!reader. Talk of body image issues, language, Tyler being a real sweetie.
The bed was squeaky, the sheets accompanying it appeared to be knitted but in reality they were scratchy, and you were pretty sure there was cigarette smoke dusting the walls.
Normally you'd complained. Except the person you would complain to was currently pressing kisses into your neck.
Alcohol can make you do strange things, like karaoke or confessing to your coworker you had a huge crush on him.
You didn't think Tyler would tease you, he wasn't like that. At most, you were expecting a subtle acknowledgement of your slip up and for it to never be brought up again.
Sure, Tyler was flirty. But you figured he had to be that way with everyone; he was so charismatic. That's why you never thought anything of it when he commented on how great you looked, or how he would place a hand on your waist when he was passing by.
So when he confessed he felt the same way, it was shocking to say the very least.
His hands felt huge as they skimmed your body. His breath was a mix of bourbon and mint, no doubt from the gum he chewed while driving you back to the motel.
"You're so soft," he murmurs, voice hot on your skin, "Fuckin' love it."
Tyler's words make you feel warm all over. You can feel the pit of desire forming in your stomach.
His fingers found the hem of your dress, toying with it.
"Oh, we don't have to..." You began, the idea of him seeing all of you under these lights mortifying. He could pass as a Calvin Klein model and you were just.....yourself.
"Do you want to?" He asked, piercing green eyes staring into yours.
You want to, God, did you want to.
But that would require him to see all of you.
"Yeah, I do," you paused, "If you want to."
Maybe he would want to save it for another night. That would give you time to eat light or even go workout beforehand.
Instead he just smiled, "I would."
Fuck.
Okay, you could do this. Just get up and turn off the lights. Then he can't see you and you won't have to focus on what you look like. Besides, he wouldn't mind.
"Where ya goin'?" His question caused you to freeze, like a deer caught in the headlights.
"To....turn off the lights?" Wasn't it obvious?
Tyler's brows knitted together in confusion, "Why?"
He was actually genuine. Great.
"Y'know....." You motioned to your body, "So you don't see.....y'know."
Now Tyler was offended. You were absolutely gorgeous, why on Earth would he not want to see your body?
Better question, who the fuck made you think that?
That was what caused his face to soften, "Hey, c'mere."
Timidly, you walked towards him. His hands encompassed yours. He pulled you into his lap, wrapping his arms around you. The gesture was so heartwarming, it made your eyes begin to water.
"Can I make a confession?" You nodded, signaling for him to continue, "I've thought about doing this with you like every day. With the lights on."
"I'm sorry," you began, but he shook his head.
"You have nothing to be sorry for. Just don't hide from me, okay? I wanna see you. All of you."
You nodded, though hesitation still ran through your veins.
"Would it help if I took my clothes off?" He offered.
You snorted, "Honestly, no. You're all chiseled and I'm just.....soft."
Tyler tried to hold back a chuckle, but failed. Hearing the sound made the tension leave your body, your shoulder relaxing for the first time in the last ten minutes.
"Alright, then we'll just start slow. Tell me stop at anytime, alright?"
Which is how you found yourself lying on your back, dress pushed up to your plush hips, and Tyler in-between your legs.
His tongue was fucking talented, and not just for explaining meteorology.
Your hands gripped his soft blonde hair as he lapped up your release. Even after you had cummed, he still continued his ministrations, as if he was determined to pull another one out of you.
His lips wrapped themself around your clit as his fingers traced your entrance. Once it had gathered enough slick, he thrusted a finger inside you.
Your walls clenched around him, welcoming the intrusion. Soon another digit joined as he angled his fingers to ensure they reached the spot that made you see stars.
White hot pleasure sent sparks throughout your body, starting at the pit of your stomach, all the way down to your toes and fingertips. You heard the bed shift and creaked, but didn't register it until you felt Tyler's lips against yours.
His tongue slipped between your lips, allowing you to taste yourself. His fingers still thrusted in and out of your core, only now at a lazy pace. The edge you had been teetering over was now slipping away.
"Tyler," his name came out as a whine, "Need-"
"I know, pretty girl," somehow that twang of his was more pronounced, "But I need ya to do something for me before you can make a mess on my hand, 'kay?"
You nodded, barely registering his words, your hips too busy trying to cant upwards in an attempt to get more of his fingers.
Tyler knew what you were trying to do and withdrew his fingers. A desperate keen fell from your lips, echoing off the walls. His hands gripped your plush hips, steadying your body.
"Please Ty, I-"
"Tell me five things you like about yourself. Then I'll give ya whatever ya want pretty girl."
This man was going to be the death of you.

That Certain Shade of Green
You, Iwaizumi and Oikawa's cat. How chaotic and romantic will that be?
You see, I'm not the type of person who likes confrontations or arguments. In fact, I do my best to avoid such situations unless necessary. Why? Because they're exhausting. I must also admit that I'm not a saint. I can run out of patience, scream in frustration, and do many others that meant visibly expressing my emotions. I cry, as in my tear ducts producing tears by processing my bodily fluids into salty, fat tears. Just that I don't cry too often, and if I do, I make sure it's worth it by waiting until I reach the last strand of my sanity before crying, or on special occasions, from grave frustration. Contrary to popular belief, I do have emotions. I'm human, not a robot or an android, much to my friends' amusement and frustration.
I also believe that I'm rational. I think things through, over and over in my head, before doing whatever it is. I do my best not to act on impulse, and I do my best to remain respectful regardless of whoever I was dealing with.
It must be a wonder why I'm saying all this... Let's just say it all boils down to me reaching my maximum boiling point and doing something unexpected it started derailing my life until all hell broke loose.
Because there's a reason why I'm currently banging on the door of my neighbor at 1 a.m. on a Saturday morning, holding a cat between my arms, with mascara and tears streaming down my face.
There's a reason why I'm still wearing yesterday's clothes, why my legs ache from standing for hours, why my head is pounding from overuse and lack of sleep.
There's a thousand more reasons I could name why I'm doing something borderline crazy, like slam my fist on someone's door in the middle of the night, but at the moment, I didn't care whether I'd get the cops called on me.
Screw this cat. Screw this neighbor. Screw this fucking life because I am so fucking done.
I must have looked fresh from the deepest pits of hell because when the door swung open, the man on the other side jumped away, eyes wide in surprise.
Opening my mouth to speak, I find the string of disrespectful words clawing at my throat two seconds ago vanishing to thin air, leaving me opening and closing my mouth like a fish out of water. Even my tears stopped the second I caught sight of the person on the other side, as though my brain stopped everything that's not involved with sight.
Time seemed to freeze in that moment, with the two of us locked in a stare-down, though technically, I wasn't... really looking at his eyes...
But honestly, who could blame me?
When I decided to storm up to my neighbor after seeing the crime scene in my apartment, I never really expected to find a half-naked greek god glaring down at me for interrupting his sleep. I mean, If I did, I wouldn't really do it with mascara-stained face or with clothes still from yesterday's. I could've cleaned up a little, at the very least.
Or whatever.
I balled my hands into fists to stop my train of thoughts.
Embarassed, warmth slowly crept up my cheeks as I sneaked a glance at the washboard abs seemingly gleaming even under the poor lighting from the nearest post.
"Shut up," I growled under my breath, but Mr. Greek God seemed to have heard, and he blinked himself awake, frowning at me.
"Excuse me?" he asked, confusion etched on his face as he continued to frown. When his eyes drifted down my arms, recognition seemed to finally dawn on him. "Why do you have Mr. Cuddles?" he asked, voice deep and gruff.
The snort came swift. Mr. Cuddles? Seriously?
"Oh, him?" you quipped, flashing the greek god a bright smile before giving the cat a back rub, "Mr. Cuddles, huh? Well, Mr.-" you paused, leaning to your right to glance at the nameplate, "-Iwaizumi, I would like to inform you that Mr. Cuddles has broken into my home and destroyed my apartment."
It took him ten seconds to react to my words. Ten seconds. I counted it in my head.
He froze, hand still holding the knob, before he visibly sagged and brought his hands up to wipe down his face. He groaned into his hands, the sound so deep the vibrations reverberated.
My eyes inavertedly shifted to his arms, strong and thick and sinewy as he raises one to run down his hair in visible frustration. The force of his glare was so potent that when he turned to look at me, my body flinched on impulse.
He'll kill me for waking him up was the first thought that ran through my head.
He frowned, silently watching me squirm under his heavy glare. Suddenly, he sighed, running a hand through his hair again. "Sorry," he grumbled. "It's not you I'm pissed at."
Is that why his hair's so spiky? It's short, too, so maybe it's the reason why it's sticking up. Too much running through it.
"Oh," I replied, surprised by his admission. "That's... good, I guess."
It took a good full minute of silence before any of us spoke, somehow focused on staring at anything besides the other.
"I'm just gonna go-"
"Wait here a sec-"
I stopped, motioning for him to go ahead.
"Go on," he replies, nodding his head at me.
"I-I'm just-" I began, cheeks reddening from embarassment when I stuttered. Good grief, why the hell am I stuttering? This was embarassing enough. Clearing my throat, I tried again.
"I'm gonna go. It's late," I tell him, jabbing a thumb towards my unit. As though he needed the information when he had been sleeping peacefully before you decided to disturb him, the cheeky devil in me snickered. Bowing slightly, I continued, "I'm sorry for disturbing you."
Without looking back up at him, I pivoted on my heels to go back to my apartment, but was pulled to a stop. Frozen in place, I turned to the hand on my arm, following it through a toned arm and up to a handsome face.
I knew he looked good, based from what I could make out from the dim lighting the nearby post provided, but out here, with more light illuminating his features, it truly made me wish the concrete would somehow open up and swallow me whole from sheer mortification.
Here I was, grimy, stressed and exhausted, with mascara and tears staining my face, while this man looks like he walked straight out of an Abercrombie billboard. He had dark locks of hair, spiky and cropped, a prominent nose that's a little crooked, probably broken once or twice, a strong jaw, and his eyes- they were green, but not much, more like a mix of brown and green- and they were beautiful. He is beautiful.
I could feel my breath get caught in my chest, at the same time my heart began thudding loudly. It physically hurt to look at this beautiful person, even in the poor light of a street lamp. I must've stared a little too long because he was frowning again, eyebrows scrunching together. "Y-yes?" I squeaked.
"The cat," he said, looking at my arms still crossed on my chest.
"The cat?" I repeated, following his gaze. I was met with a pair of blue eyes gleaming in the dark. I jumped, effectively pulling my arm out of his grasp. "Right! The cat!" I exclaimed, my nerves making me laugh.
"Sorry about that," I tell him as I shifted my hold on the cat, ready to pass it to his waiting arms.
All of a sudden, the cat hissed, quickly followed by a shout of pain as the cat jumped out of reach and ran straight back to my apartment. Before I could fully process what happened, Mr. Iwaizumi was hot on his tail, bolting down the hall towards my apartment.
"Wait!" I called after him, catching up as quickly as I could while he stood frozen by my doorstep.
Stopping at his side, I watched as his eyes slowly took in the state of my apartment, his expression getting dimmer and dimmer the longer he looked around.
To simply call it a mess was an understatement. From the scattered shoes, scratched sofa and pillows, ripped curtains, broken stems and shattered pots, you'd think this was a crime scene, with paw prints on soil as evidence.
You!" he barked, jolting me out of my reverie from the mess I call my apartment. I followed his line of sight, stopping at the slimy little bastard who caused this disaster.
We all froze, me, him and the cat, locked in a staredown before the cheeky demon, seemingly smirking at us from his high throne, thrust a paw at the sole survivor of his havoc, my domino cactus perched on my countertop, pushing it on its side. As the pot rolled side to side, Mr. Cuddles skipped away from view, leaving me and Mr. Iwaizumi holding our breath as the pot continued its motion.
"No!" I screamed when the pot started to teeter over the edge, slapping my hands over my eyes to save me from the heart-wrenching sight.
The sound of ceramic breaking didn't reach my ears. Instead, a loud groan echoed through the apartment, followed by a string of curses that filled the deafening silence of the night. It took me seconds before gaining the courage to sneak a peek. What I saw made my breath and my heart to stutter, feeling electrified by some current that made me feel all jittery inside.
Mr. Iwaizumi was lying down on the messy floor, hand outstretched and holding the plant safely in his hand.
Wait, the plant?
I watched as he used his free hand to push himself to a sitting position, groaning with the effort. Once seated, he took the pot with his other hand, hissing in pain as his palm is freed from the sharp thorns of the cactus.
"Shit," he cursed out loud, groaning as he flexed his right hand, assessing the damage the plant has done.
"Shit," I echoed.

I am back from the dungeons of life with this ancient draft I have on my notes. I know I still have works in progress but this one wanted to come out sooner than later. Thanks for stopping by!

That was good work kid
day 1: prompt used #1 "that was good work"
Original work short story: Marie is roughly late teen early adult(between 18 to 22) , Henry is in his early forties, this is a semi-fantasy setting in which Marie's apprentiship is to be a forest guard.
So here are the warnings: If I missed anything don't hesitate to tell me :)
warning: break-in, violence, self defense, blood, murder
story under the cut is 960 words long
okay so maybe I rewrote it because I couldn't remember what I wrote and I was bored at work. (so yes.. this was mostly written on blank receipts) and it's 9pm 1st oct so I'm within the deadline.
~~~~~
Marie lowered the heavy axe, breathing erratically as her body ached with every breath she took. She was exhausted and her muscles felt on fire but she wasn't done, not yet.
She lifted the heavy chopping axe and slammed it back against the big log of hard wood. It finally split at the spot she had been hitting repeatedly for three minutes now and she finally could fill the wheelbarrow and bring it back to the small cabin. The axe was resting on top of the wheelbarrow as she balanced everything, muscles protesting every step of the way, to not drop the wheelbarrow.
When she had taken an apprenticeship she had not expected it would be quite this physically hard this early on. She had known it wasn't going to be easy, they were quite deep into the wilderness and had met her mentor before beginning. She knew he would not go easy on her, he was rough around the edge and definitely was not looking for people to waste his time.
"Mr. Henry?" Maria called from a few steps away from the cabin, still pushing the wheelbarrow closer with still uncertain grasp on the rough and aged handles. She could feel already blister forming from the handle of the axe and the handles of the wheelbarrow.
She left it near the door and opened the door to Mr. Henry fighting with humid wood to start a fire in the small heart, the nights were starting to get cold and soon temperatures would drop below freezing point.
"Mr. Henry? I'm done with splitting the last of the wood logs, do I get them inside to dry?" She asked, she tried asking regular questions since she was meant to learn under his care but at most he would humm an affirmative sound or a negative one and she would have to guess which one was which.
This one sounded like an affirmative so she grabbed an armful of small quarters of logs and sat them aside beside the heart in an half circle around it to dry faster. She lowered the heavy armful, underestimating the weight of it and she started to loose balance, leaning forward more and more until she was sure she was going to break her face against the logs.
A hand grabbed her by the collar of her shirt and pulled just enough to get her back to balance.
"It wouldn't do well for you to get injured that early in your apprenticeship, it would be bad omen." He grumbled as he let go of her collar almost gently.
Marie chuckled as she straighten the logs left and looked outside to the disappearing sun. In as deep as the forest as they were the dark came much earlier than it did when she used to live in a small town. The day was almost over and she had just barely managed to complete all the tasks Mr. Henry had given her.
"Just get the axe inside so it doesn't rust before you knock out for the night." Called Mr. Henry, heading to the porch with a small block of dark wood and a carving knife.
Marie had yet to see anything he carved but he would spend hours on hours at night just carving. She wondered not only what he was carving, but also when he slept because she was always exhausted but somehow he always was awake before her.
She brought the axe inside, leaning it against the side of the door to her bedroom and dropped on the bed. She fell asleep almost instantly, muscles aching and exhausted. She woke up hours later to the sound of rustling and the click of a gun being loaded. She froze in her bed, not knowing what to do. She heard the gun being armed and she prayed for a second that getting up would not make the bed creak.
She slowly opened the door just enough to slip in the main area, still in total darkness and her hand reached for the splitting axe, shaky fingers wrapping around the handle. She walked toward the noise, keeping close to the wall where the floor was less creaky. In the dim glow of the fireplace she saw Mr. Henry, carving knife in his left hand, on the floor with a form looming over him, gun pointed at him.
She stopped breathing a moment, fixing her grasp on the axe and lifted it before swinging it at the form.
The she doesn't remember much, just sitting on the floor near the fireplace shaking and blood drops on her face, Mr. Henry kneeling in front of her.
"You did good kid, that was good work."
"Did I kill him?" She whispered, feeling the dried drops of blood crack as she spoke.
"No kid you did not, I did, listen, his blood is not on your hands okay?" He said and she saw the blood on his face too, his shirt had blood soaking through.
She wondered a moment if this was the longest discussion she had with her mentor and would have laughed at the irony of it all if not for the feeling of the blisters on her hands reminding her she had swung an axe at someone.
She looked at her hands to see she was still hanging on to the axe and she lowered it to the ground. Looking at the blood arounds her fingers. Mr. Henry reached a hand out and Marie grabbed it, he pulled her to her feet and tapped her shoulder lightly.
"You'll be fine kid, let's get the blood cleaned up okay? It wasn't your fault." He repeated as he guided both of them to the well and drew water in a bucket.
The Graveyard Shift
A short horror story by Glennis
Part 1: The New Job
The neon sign of "Burger Bonanza" flickered weakly in the humid summer night, casting an eerie glow across the empty parking lot. Jake Cooper, a lanky 19-year-old with tousled brown hair and tired eyes, stood before the drive-thru restaurant, keys jingling nervously in his hand. He glanced at his watch: 11:55 PM. His first night shift was about to begin.
Jake took a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves. He needed this job; college tuition wasn't going to pay itself. Besides, how bad could a summer job at a burger joint be? Sure, there were those rumors about the last night shift worker, but those were probably just urban legends, right?
As he approached the side door, a beat-up sedan pulled into the lot. A middle-aged man with a receding hairline and a paunch that spoke of too many late-night burgers stepped out. This must be Mr. Grimes, the owner.
"You must be Jake," Mr. Grimes said, his voice gruff but not unkind. "Right on time. Good. Let's get you started."
Jake nodded, following Mr. Grimes into the building. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, illuminating the small kitchen and service area. Everything looked clean, if a bit worn around the edges.
"Alright, kid," Mr. Grimes began, "night shift's pretty straightforward. You man the grill, the fryer, and the drive-thru window. Menu's limited after midnight - just burgers, dogs, and fries. Drinks are self-serve. Got it?"
"Yes, sir," Jake replied, trying to sound confident. "Um, Mr. Grimes? I heard some... stories about the last person who worked nights here. Is there anything I should know?"
Mr. Grimes' face darkened, and he turned away abruptly. "Don't believe everything you hear, kid. Focus on your job, and you'll be fine."
Jake wanted to press further, but something in Mr. Grimes' tone warned him against it. Instead, he listened attentively as the owner walked him through the equipment and procedures.
"Any questions?" Mr. Grimes asked after the brief tour.
Jake shook his head. "I think I've got it, sir."
"Good. I'll be back to relieve you at 6 AM. Remember, lock up if you need to use the restroom, and don't let anyone inside the building. No exceptions."
With that, Mr. Grimes handed Jake a set of keys and headed for the door. He paused for a moment, his hand on the handle, and looked back at Jake with an unreadable expression.
"Oh, and Jake? Whatever happens, whatever you might see or hear... don't leave your post. Understand?"
Before Jake could respond, Mr. Grimes was gone, leaving him alone in the suddenly too-quiet restaurant. The clock on the wall ticked loudly, marking the start of his shift: 12:00 AM.
Jake swallowed hard, trying to shake off the growing sense of unease. It's just a job, he told himself. Nothing to worry about. But as he moved to the drive-thru window, he couldn't help but feel like something was watching him from the shadows of the empty parking lot.
The crackle of the drive-thru speaker made him jump. "Hello?" a voice called out, tinny and distorted. "Anyone there? We want some burgers!"
Jake took a deep breath and pressed the talk button. "Welcome to Burger Bonanza. May I take your order?"
And so, his first night shift began.
------
Part 2: The Night Unfolds
The first few hours of Jake's shift passed without incident. A steady trickle of customers kept him busy enough to push Mr. Grimes' cryptic warning to the back of his mind. Most were what he expected for the late-night crowd: bleary-eyed truckers grabbing a quick bite, giggling teenagers out for a joyride, and the occasional drunk needing to soak up the alcohol with greasy food.
Around 2 AM, things began to change.
Jake was wiping down the grill when he felt a sudden chill run down his spine. He turned, half-expecting to see someone behind him, but the kitchen was empty. Shaking his head, he returned to his task, only to freeze as he caught a flicker of movement in his peripheral vision.
"Hello?" he called out, his voice sounding thin in the empty restaurant. No response.
The drive-thru speaker crackled to life, making him jump. "Order when you're ready," he said automatically, grateful for the distraction.
"Yeah, uh... can I get a... wait, where am I?" The voice on the other end sounded confused, almost dazed.
Jake frowned. "Sir, this is Burger Bonanza. Are you alright?"
There was a long pause, then a burst of static. When the voice returned, it was different – deeper, with an odd echo. "I'll have what's not on the menu."
A chill ran through Jake. "I'm sorry, sir, but we only serve—"
The line went dead.
Jake peered out the drive-thru window, but there was no car in sight. He rubbed his eyes, fatigue and unease battling for dominance. Must have been a prank call, he thought, trying to convince himself.
As the night wore on, Jake found himself growing increasingly jumpy. Shadows seemed to stretch and move when he wasn't looking directly at them. The hum of the refrigerators took on an almost musical quality, like distant, discordant whispers.
At 3:17 AM – he remembered the time precisely because he'd checked his watch, hoping his shift was closer to ending – Jake noticed something odd. The parking lot, which had been empty just moments before, now had three cars in it. A red sedan, a blue pickup truck, and a black SUV.
But there had been no customers. No one had ordered food.
Jake's heart began to race. He fumbled for his phone, thinking to call Mr. Grimes, but stopped short. What would he say? That he was scared of parked cars?
The drive-thru speaker crackled again. Jake nearly dropped the phone in surprise.
"Hello?" he said, his voice shaking slightly. "Welcome to Burger Bonanza. Can I take your order?"
Silence. Then, so faint he almost missed it, a sound. It might have been a whisper, or the wind, or...
A scream. A distant, muffled scream that cut off abruptly.
Jake stumbled back from the window, his breath coming in short gasps. This can't be happening, he thought. This isn't real.
But when he looked back at the parking lot, a fourth car had appeared. Its engine was still running, headlights cutting through the darkness. The driver's door was open.
There was no sign of the driver.
Jake's fingers trembled as he reached for the phone again. This time, he dialed Mr. Grimes' number. It rang once, twice, three times...
"You've reached Greg Grimes. Leave a message."
The beep of the voicemail coincided with another crackle from the drive-thru speaker. Jake's head snapped toward it, dread pooling in his stomach.
"Welcome to Burger Bonanza," he whispered, his mouth dry. "Can I take your order?"
The voice that answered was familiar. Too familiar.
"Jake?" It was Mr. Grimes. But something was wrong. His voice was strained, fearful. "Jake, listen to me. Whatever you do, don't—"
The line went dead.
Jake stood frozen, staring at the speaker. Slowly, mechanically, he turned to look out at the parking lot again.
A fifth car had appeared. Mr. Grimes' beat-up sedan.
The driver's door was open. The car was empty.
And in the darkness beyond the reach of the neon sign, something moved.
-------
Part 3: The Darkness Closes In
Jake's heart pounded in his chest as he stared out at the parking lot, his eyes fixed on Mr. Grimes' empty car. The rational part of his mind scrambled for explanations, but each one felt flimsier than the last. He found himself backing away from the window, his hands shaking as he reached for his phone once more.
As he dialed 911, a loud bang from the kitchen made him yelp, nearly dropping the device. Jake spun around, his eyes wide with fear. The sound had come from the walk-in freezer.
"911, what's your emergency?" The operator's calm voice in his ear grounded him momentarily.
"I... I'm at Burger Bonanza on Route 17," Jake stammered. "Something's wrong. There are empty cars in the parking lot, and I heard a scream, and my boss is missing, and—"
Another bang from the freezer, louder this time. Jake's voice caught in his throat.
"Sir? Are you still there?" The operator sounded concerned. "Can you tell me more about what's happening?"
Jake opened his mouth to respond, but no words came out. Because at that moment, he saw it. A dark, viscous substance was seeping out from under the freezer door. It looked like oil, but it moved with a purpose, creeping across the floor tiles with unnatural speed.
"Oh God," Jake whispered, backing away. "It's coming from the freezer. Some kind of... liquid. It's moving."
"Sir, I'm not sure I understand. Is there a leak in your restaurant?"
The substance reached the base of the nearest counter and began to climb, defying gravity. Jake watched in horror as it formed into a shape – a hand, fingers outstretched, reaching for him.
He screamed, dropping the phone and bolting for the front door. But as he reached for the handle, Mr. Grimes' final warning echoed in his mind: "Whatever happens, whatever you might see or hear... don't leave your post."
Jake's hand froze inches from the door. He glanced back at the kitchen, where the dark substance had now formed a humanoid shape, featureless and glistening in the fluorescent light. It took a step toward him, leaving an oily footprint on the tile.
With a whimper of fear, Jake darted behind the counter, pressing himself into the corner. He could hear the 911 operator's tinny voice coming from his abandoned phone, but the words were drowned out by the sound of his own ragged breathing and the slow, wet footsteps of the approaching entity.
"Please," Jake whispered, squeezing his eyes shut. "Please, just go away."
The footsteps stopped. For a long moment, there was only silence. Jake held his breath, afraid to move, afraid to open his eyes.
Then, a new sound. A gurgling, bubbling noise, like thick liquid being sucked down a drain. Jake cracked one eye open, then both flew wide in disbelief.
The dark figure was gone. The oily substance had vanished, leaving no trace on the floor or counters. Even the freezer door was closed, showing no signs of the horror that had emerged from it.
Jake slowly stood up, his legs shaky. Had he imagined it all? Was the stress of the night shift playing tricks on his mind?
The drive-thru speaker crackled to life, making him flinch. "Hello?" a woman's voice called out. "Is anyone there? I'd like to place an order."
Jake hesitated, then moved to the window. A red-haired woman in her thirties sat in a green minivan, looking impatient. Beyond her, the parking lot was empty. No sign of the mysterious cars, no sign of Mr. Grimes' sedan.
"I'm sorry," Jake said, his voice hoarse. "What can I get for you?"
As he took the woman's order and prepared her food, Jake felt a sense of unreality wash over him. Had he dozed off and dreamed the whole thing? But no – his phone was still on the floor where he'd dropped it, the call to 911 still active.
He ended the call with a mumbled apology to the confused operator, then served the woman her food. As she drove away, Jake checked his watch. 4:23 AM. Less than two hours left in his shift.
Just get through this, he told himself. Get through the night, and never come back. To hell with college tuition – no amount of money was worth this.
But as the minutes ticked by, the earlier events began to feel more and more like a bad dream. Jake found himself rationalizing, making excuses. The cars in the parking lot? He must have been half-asleep and imagined them. The voice on the speaker that sounded like Mr. Grimes? A prank, or his mind playing tricks on him. The thing from the freezer? Just fatigue and an overactive imagination.
By 5 AM, Jake had almost convinced himself that nothing unusual had happened at all. He was wiping down the counter, humming softly to himself, when he heard it. A soft tapping sound, coming from the front of the restaurant.
Jake looked up and froze. A man stood outside the glass doors, smiling and waving. He was older, maybe in his fifties, with graying hair and glasses. He wore a Burger Bonanza uniform.
The man pointed to the lock, miming the action of opening it. His smile never wavered.
Jake hesitated. Mr. Grimes had been very clear – no one was to be let inside during the night shift. But this man was clearly an employee. Maybe he was here to relieve Jake early?
The tapping came again, more insistent this time. The man's smile widened, showing too many teeth.
Something wasn't right. Jake took a step back, shaking his head. "I'm sorry," he called out. "I can't let you in. Manager's orders."
The man's smile vanished. He pressed his face against the glass, his features contorting with rage. When he spoke, his voice came through clearly, as if he were standing right next to Jake.
"Let me in, Jake," he hissed. "Let me in NOW."
Jake stumbled backward, knocking over a stack of trays. The man outside began to pound on the glass, his fists leaving smears of something dark and oily. His face stretched and twisted, becoming less human with each passing second.
"You can't keep me out forever, Jake," the thing that was no longer a man snarled. "I'll get in. I always get in."
Jake scrambled for his phone, his fingers shaking as he tried to dial 911 again. But before he could complete the call, every light in the restaurant went out at once. The humming of the refrigerators and fryers cut off, leaving Jake in total darkness and silence.
For a moment, he stood perfectly still, straining his ears for any sound. There was nothing – not even the pounding on the glass.
Then, a new sound. A wet, slithering noise, coming from everywhere at once. Jake felt something brush against his ankle and let out a strangled cry, kicking wildly in the darkness.
His foot connected with something solid, sending it skittering across the floor. A faint green glow emanated from the object, and Jake realized with a jolt that it was the restaurant's ancient emergency lantern. He dove for it, his hands closing around the cool plastic just as something cold and slimy wrapped around his wrist.
Jake yanked his arm back and slammed his hand down on the lantern's power button. A weak green light filled the restaurant, and he found himself face to face with a nightmare.
The oily substance from before had returned, but now it filled the restaurant, covering every surface. And it was alive. Tendrils reached for him, faces formed and dissolved in its depths, mouths opening in silent screams.
At the center of it all stood a figure. It might have once been the man from outside, but now it was something else entirely. Its body was composed of the same dark liquid, but more solid, more defined. It had too many limbs, too many eyes, all fixed on Jake.
"No more barriers between us, Jake," it said, its voice a chorus of whispers. "No more rules to hide behind. It's just you and us now."
Jake scrambled backward, clutching the lantern like a lifeline. His back hit the drive-thru window, and he realized with a sickening lurch that it was his only chance. He fumbled with the latch, acutely aware of the creature's slow approach.
"You can't run from us, Jake," it said, almost gently. "We are everywhere. We are everything. Why fight it?"
The window swung open, and Jake didn't hesitate. He threw himself through it, tumbling onto the asphalt of the drive-thru lane. He could hear the thing inside, its liquid body sloshing against the walls as it pursued him.
Jake ran. He ran faster than he'd ever run in his life, his lungs burning, the green lantern bouncing wildly in his grip. He didn't look back, didn't dare to see if the creature was following. He just ran.
The sky was beginning to lighten, the first hints of dawn breaking over the horizon. Jake's only coherent thought was to reach that light, to escape the darkness that had nearly consumed him.
He had no idea how long he ran, or how far. Eventually, his legs gave out, and he collapsed on the side of the road, gasping for air. The lantern rolled away, its light flickering weakly before going out.
As Jake lay there, waiting for his heartbeat to slow, he became aware of a sound. Engines. Cars.
He lifted his head and saw that he was on the outskirts of town. The morning commute was beginning, normal people starting their normal days. The nightmare of Burger Bonanza felt distant, unreal.
A car slowed beside him, and an older woman rolled down her window. "Are you alright, young man?" she asked, concern etched on her face. "Do you need help?"
Jake opened his mouth to respond, to pour out the whole terrifying story. But as he met the woman's kind eyes, he realized how insane it would sound. He was alive. He had escaped. Maybe that was enough.
"I'm okay," he said, his voice raw. "Just... just went for an early morning run and pushed myself too hard. Thank you, though."
The woman didn't look entirely convinced, but she nodded and drove on. Jake watched her taillights disappear around a bend, then slowly got to his feet. His Burger Bonanza uniform was torn and stained with things he didn't want to think about.
As he started the long walk home, Jake made a silent vow. He would find another way to pay for college. He would forget about Burger Bonanza, forget about the horrors he'd seen. He would move on with his life and pretend this night had never happened.
But deep down, he knew. The darkness he'd glimpsed, the things that lurked just beyond the veil of reality – they were still out there. And somewhere in the shadows, they were waiting. Watching. Hungry for the next unlucky soul to stumble into their realm.
Jake shuddered and walked faster, chasing the rising sun. For now, at least, he was safe in the light. But night would fall again. It always did.
And in the darkness, something was smiling.
------
Part 4: The Aftermath
The sun had fully risen by the time Jake stumbled up the driveway to his parents' house. His legs felt like lead, his mind a fog of exhaustion and lingering terror. As he fumbled with his keys, the front door swung open, revealing his mother's worried face.
"Jake! Where have you been? We've been worried sick!" She took in his disheveled appearance, the tears in his uniform, the wild look in his eyes. "What happened to you?"
Jake opened his mouth, then closed it again. How could he possibly explain? "I... I quit my job," he managed to say.
His mother ushered him inside, peppering him with questions he couldn't bring himself to answer. He allowed her to guide him to the couch, barely registering as she fussed over him, checking for injuries and pressing a glass of water into his hands.
"I'm calling your father," she said, reaching for her phone. "He's out looking for you. We tried calling the restaurant, but no one answered."
At the mention of Burger Bonanza, Jake's head snapped up. "No!" he said, more forcefully than he intended. "No, don't... don't call anyone. Please. I just need to sleep."
His mother's frown deepened, but she nodded slowly. "Alright, sweetie. But when you wake up, we need to talk about what happened. Okay?"
Jake nodded numbly, already feeling consciousness slipping away as he sank into the familiar comfort of the couch. As his eyes closed, he thought he saw a shadow move in the corner of the room, but exhaustion claimed him before he could react.
He dreamed of darkness and oily tendrils and too many teeth.
When Jake awoke, the house was quiet. Golden afternoon light streamed through the windows, and for a moment, he could almost believe that the events of the previous night had been nothing more than a nightmare.
But the aches in his body and the stains on his uniform told a different story.
He sat up slowly, wincing at the stiffness in his muscles. A note on the coffee table caught his eye:
"Jake,
Your father and I had to run some errands. There's food in the fridge if you're hungry. We'll talk when we get home.
Love, Mom"
Jake was grateful for the reprieve, but he knew he couldn't avoid the conversation forever. What would he tell them? The truth seemed impossible, but he couldn't think of a lie that would explain everything.
As he shuffled to the kitchen, a news alert on his phone made him freeze:
"LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER FOUND DEAD, FOUL PLAY SUSPECTED"
With trembling fingers, Jake opened the article. His blood ran cold as he read:
"Gregory Grimes, 52, owner of the Burger Bonanza restaurant on Route 17, was found deceased in his vehicle this morning. Police are treating the death as suspicious. Witnesses report seeing Grimes' car in the restaurant parking lot overnight, but employees claim no one answered when they arrived to open the restaurant this morning..."
The phone slipped from Jake's grasp, clattering on the kitchen tile. Mr. Grimes was dead. The car in the parking lot hadn't been a hallucination. It had all been real.
Which meant the other things he'd seen...
Jake's breath came in short gasps as panic threatened to overwhelm him. He gripped the edge of the counter, forcing himself to take deep breaths. He needed to think, needed to figure out what to do.
Should he go to the police? But what would he say? That his boss had been killed by some kind of oily, shape-shifting monster? They'd think he was crazy, or worse, a suspect.
As Jake grappled with his limited options, a flicker of movement caught his eye. He turned towards the kitchen window and felt his heart stop.
There, on the other side of the glass, stood the man he'd seen outside Burger Bonanza. The one who had transformed into the creature that chased him. He smiled at Jake, raising a hand to wave.
Jake stumbled backward, knocking over a chair in his haste to get away. When he looked back, the window was empty. Just a trick of the light, he told himself, even as a cold sweat broke out on his forehead.
But deep down, he knew. They had found him. And they weren't going to let him go.
The sound of a car pulling into the driveway snapped Jake back to reality. His parents were home. He had to pull himself together, had to find some way to explain what had happened without sounding insane.
As he heard the front door open, Jake took a deep breath and stepped out of the kitchen. "Mom? Dad? I need to talk to you."
The next few hours were a blur of half-truths and omissions. Jake told his parents about quitting his job, about Mr. Grimes acting strangely and leaving him alone on his first shift. He mentioned feeling uneasy, hearing odd noises, and eventually fleeing the restaurant in a panic. He left out the moving shadows, the oily creature, and the man at the window – both at Burger Bonanza and at home.
His parents exchanged worried glances as he spoke, their concern evident. When he finished, his father cleared his throat. "Son, I think you should talk to someone. A professional. What you experienced sounds like it might have been a panic attack, and with Mr. Grimes' death... well, it's a lot to process."
Jake wanted to argue, to insist that what he'd seen was real. But the words died in his throat. Maybe they were right. Maybe his mind had conjured up the impossible horrors to cope with a stressful situation. It was certainly more plausible than the alternative.
"Okay," he said quietly. "Maybe you're right."
The relief on his parents' faces was palpable. They spent the rest of the evening making plans – finding a therapist, discussing alternative ways for Jake to earn money for college, assuring him that everything would be alright.
But as night fell and shadows lengthened across the living room, Jake couldn't shake the feeling that eyes were watching him from every dark corner.
Days passed. Jake started seeing a therapist, Dr. Elaine Carter, who listened patiently as he recounted his experience at Burger Bonanza. She nodded sympathetically, offered coping strategies for anxiety, and assured him that his reactions were normal given the circumstances.
"Our minds can play tricks on us when we're under stress," she explained. "Especially in unfamiliar environments, like a new job. What you experienced was likely a combination of anxiety, fatigue, and an overactive imagination triggered by the stressful situation."
Jake wanted to believe her. And in the light of day, surrounded by the normal, everyday world, it was easy to accept her explanations. But at night, when the house grew quiet and shadows deepened, doubt crept in.
Because the oddities hadn't stopped.
It started small. Objects not where he'd left them. Strange noises in empty rooms. Glimpses of movement just at the edge of his vision. Jake tried to rationalize each incident, but they kept piling up, wearing away at his fragile sense of normalcy.
A week after that fateful night at Burger Bonanza, Jake was home alone, trying to distract himself with television. As he flipped through channels, the screen suddenly went dark. In the reflection on the glass, Jake saw a figure standing behind the couch.
He whirled around, heart pounding, but the room was empty. When he turned back to the TV, the picture had returned to normal.
That night, he dreamed of Burger Bonanza. In the dream, he was back behind the counter, but everything was wrong. The walls oozed that same dark, oily substance. Distorted faces pressed against the windows, mouths open in silent screams. And behind him, always behind him, he could hear the wet slithering of the creature, getting closer with each passing second.
Jake woke with a strangled gasp, sheets tangled around his legs. As his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he realized with dawning horror that his nightmare hadn't fully retreated.
There, on his bedroom ceiling, was a slowly spreading stain of something dark and viscous. As he watched, frozen in terror, it began to move, reaching down towards him with grasping tendrils.
Jake threw himself out of bed, slamming into his desk in his haste to reach the light switch. When the room flooded with light, the ceiling was clean. No sign of the horror he'd seen.
But he knew. He knew it had been real.
The next day, Jake skipped his therapy appointment. Instead, he found himself driving aimlessly, trying to clear his head. Without realizing it, he'd taken the road out of town – the same road he'd fled down that night.
As Burger Bonanza came into view, Jake felt his pulse quicken. The restaurant was dark, surrounded by police tape. A "CLOSED" sign hung in the window. He should have driven past, should have put as much distance between himself and that place as possible.
Instead, he pulled into the parking lot.
For a long moment, Jake sat in his car, staring at the building. In the harsh light of day, it looked almost ordinary. Just a run-down fast food joint, nothing more. But he knew what lurked behind those walls, what waited in the shadows.
A tap on his window made him jump. An older man with a detective's badge peered in at him, gesturing for Jake to roll down the window.
"Can I help you, son?" the detective asked, his voice gruff but not unkind.
Jake swallowed hard. This was his chance. He could tell this man everything, lay out the whole terrifying truth. Maybe then someone would believe him. Maybe then he could finally be free of the nightmares, the paranoia, the constant feeling of being watched.
He opened his mouth, ready to spill it all. But as he met the detective's eyes, he saw something that made his blood run cold. Just for a second, so quick he might have imagined it, the man's pupils elongated into slits, like a cat's. Or like something much, much worse.
"No," Jake heard himself say, his voice surprisingly steady. "No, I was just turning around. Got a bit lost."
The detective – if that's what he really was – smiled. It was too wide, showing too many teeth. "Well, best be on your way then. Nothing to see here. And Jake?" The use of his name, which Jake was certain he hadn't given, sent a chill down his spine. "Drive safe. We wouldn't want anything to happen to you."
Jake nodded numbly and put the car in reverse, tires squealing as he peeled out of the parking lot. In his rearview mirror, he saw the detective – the thing wearing a detective's face – wave goodbye, its arm stretching impossibly long.
As Jake sped away, his mind raced. He couldn't stay here. Couldn't pretend everything was normal. Whatever had been unleashed that night at Burger Bonanza, it wasn't confined to that building. It had spread, infecting the town like a cancer.
And it was after him.
By the time Jake reached his house, he'd made up his mind. He threw some clothes and essentials into a bag, scrawled a hasty note to his parents, and was back in his car within minutes. He didn't know where he was going, only that he had to get away.
As he drove past the "Now Leaving" sign at the town limits, Jake allowed himself to hope. Maybe if he got far enough away, he could escape the reach of the darkness. Maybe he could start over somewhere new, somewhere untouched by the horrors he'd witnessed.
But as the miles rolled by and night began to fall, Jake couldn't shake the feeling that he was being followed. Every set of headlights in his rearview mirror made his heart race. Every shadow by the roadside seemed to move with unnatural purpose.
And when he finally pulled into a motel on the outskirts of a town he didn't know, exhaustion overtaking his fear, the clerk behind the desk smiled at him with too many teeth.
"Welcome," the thing wearing the clerk's skin said, its voice a chorus of whispers. "We've been expecting you."
Jake ran. He would always run. But deep down, he knew the truth that had been revealed to him that night at Burger Bonanza. The veil between our world and something darker, something hungry, was thin. And once you've seen behind it, there's no going back.
The darkness had tasted him. And it would never stop hunting him.
As Jake peeled out of the motel parking lot, the open road ahead of him, he realized that his summer job had taught him something after all. There are things in this world – and beyond it – far more terrifying than student loans.
And no matter how far he ran, the night would always fall. The shadows would always lengthen.
And in the darkness, something would always be smiling.
~~~A BOY WHO~~~
Lee Heeseung fiction
Part 1
Author's pov:
"Dear diary
Seems like a story about a boy who never found his happiness" he wrote while wiping away his tears. He was tired of everything. Tired of school.Tired of family.Tired of friends.Tired of his life.
Suddenly he took of his shirt, got the scissors from his table. He looked at his scars that remind him of the pain he went through his whole life, he looked at the wet pages of his diary that tell him about his hard life and then he looked out of the window. Spring. A season when everything wakes up. Everything wakes up again. After cold and freezing winter everything finds strength and wakes up again forgetting about past. Starting everything again. There was time when those trees with green leaves looked like a stick but now... There was no sun and no hope that sun will come up soon and now...
Tears fell dow from his eyes. He felt happy. Something told him to give second chance to his life. Give a second chance and start everything again. From new page.
The bell rang. Everyone was in the classroom. Heeseung too. He was always smiling and happy boy to everyone but no one knew the truth. Though it was obvious. Always wearing long sleeves, always sitting alone, avoiding eye contact. The teacher entered the classroom but he wasn't alone. There was a girl behind him. She wore their school uniform but no one had seen her before. She was shortie. Black hair with bangs. Cute boba eyes and pink plump lips.
" She's cute" Heeseung thought himself.
Your pov:
- okay Y/N, here's your class. Can you introduce yourself?
- Yes Mr. Park. I can
The teacher guided me to the classroom. When me entered everyone's eyes were on me.
- Hi everyone, I'm L/N Y/N. Nice to meet you.- I said awkwardly
- okay now go and sit somewhere- the teacher Sait to me. I noticed the last seat next to a boy that was free. So I sat there.
As an introvert I didn't even say hi to my seatmate and he did the same.
His pov:
" She sat next to me. Omg. Okay Heeseung don't do anything embarrassing. Don't talk a lot. Just don't talk." I told myself. She is beautiful. Her dark hair reminds me of night sky. Her puffy blush cheeks looked so soft that I already wanted to pinch them. WAIT?! I REALLY DID THAT??!! SHIT
Your pov
I was listening to the teacher when felt that someone pinched my cheeks. I turned around and saw the boy next to me. He looks good.
- what are you doing ? -i whispered to him
- oh. .... Um... Sorry i- I don't know . Just.... Your cheeks .....- he whispered
- What my cheeks ? What's with them? Is there something? - I panicked
- N-no... Just ... They're- he was cut off by the teacher
- Y/N and Heeseung silence- the teacher yelled
So his name is Heeseung. But what he wanted to say about my cheeks. I'll ask later.
The class ended. When I was done packing my things I noticed that Heeseung was already gone.
So I had to look for him. I was running through corridor when I noticed him next to his locker.
His pov:
I was getting my books when I heard someone's heavy breathing. I couldn't see anyone, so I just closed my locker. But behind the locker door was Y/N trying to catch her breath.
- Are you okay?- I asked her
- Yeh I'm okay Heeseung- she said still catching breath. Heeseung? She knows my name? How? She asked anyone? Maybe I was interesting for her?
- How do you know my name? - I asked out of interest
- The teacher said- she said already calmed down. My expectations were wrong. What's this feeling? Why do I feel it? I started to think...
- Hey, Earth to Heeseung. Are you there?- she said snapping her fingers in front of my face
-oh, um yes. What did you wanted to say?
- I just have a question- she said. I didn't say anything and stood there with blank expression.
She sighed. Guess she wanted me something to say.
- What did you wanted to say earlier. About my cheeks.- she said looking down.
-Oh, I wanted to say that your cheeks look cute- i felt embarrassed. Her too. But why.
- o, thanks....-i could see her blush- i-is that all?
- yeah?- I said not looking in her eyes.
- ok then, bye. See you tomorrow - she said running away.
Y/N pov:
His words made me blush really hard. But I never blushed before......

“And the Artist Of The Year Award goes to none other than...” the announcer said, keeping you all at the edge of your seats. Everyone here had voted for Jake so many times so that he would win. The announcer looked at the folded card in his hand before smiling and saying.
“Jake Sim!” The screams of everyone in the beer parlour with you watching the award ceremony were probably louder than those in the venue itself. You all watched in pride as the look of shock was evident on his face and he shakily walked to the podium to collect the award. You smiled at how good he looked, he had come so far from the boy you once knew here.
Five years ago, Jake had left his hometown, where he grew up for 18 years to pursue his dream. Granted, not everyone is supposed to stay for the rest of their lives but he thought he was going to stay but he made up his mind to leave for his passion. You all supported him even if you weren’t able to talk to him because of his busy schedule. Being able to cheer him from the sidelines was what you were content with. He was the pride of the town and people did not hesitate to show him off.
He gave the announcer a bow and collected the award. You could see the way his hands shook as he collected the award as if it felt unreal that he won.
“I would like to thank God for the ability to get to this point today and to thank my parents for always teaching me the right way and having the courage to let their child pursue his dreams even if it meant that I would be very far away; almost out of reach even. I love you. To all those that have continuously supported me and listened to my music, thank you. To the staff that have worked so hard and everyone I've had the pleasure of meeting, a big thank you to you" he said and walked off.
The excitement of the crowd reduced and everyone eventually retired to their homes while chatting amongst themselves. You think about the award one more time, feeling happy for him and move on. After all, the same way Sim has a life to live is the same way you do also.
The next day, when you wake up you feel a shift in the atmosphere. The birds are still chirping, yes but something feels unusual. You brush off the paranoia you feel and decide to do your usual morning duties and carry on with your day. While other people your age wanted to have prestigious jobs(not like there was anything wrong with that), you wanted something simple and had decided on being either a cafe owner or a florist.
Sadly, the cafe owner agenda wasn't able to work out because everyone in the vicinity was now aware of the way you burned down a cafe trying to bake and collectively decided that you should not be allowed to make food for people. Flowers were better than running a cafe shop. You stayed with your flowers and you were able to give
someone a flower when they needed it.
Need a flower for your mother? You got it, a daylily was exactly what they needed. Wanted to attend a funeral? Take a bouquet of lilies. It was easy to understand and you didn't directly put anyone in harm’s way. Although your shop was hardly ever full, you were content with everything.
That's why you're shocked when you find a line of people waiting to be let into your shop at 9 am. You raised an eyebrow in confusion but you opened the door nevertheless. At the end of the day, you were the one earning the money. You had things to buy, didn't you?
You take your place at the counter and start attending to the customers. They didn't tell you to pick out one for them and just chose it themselves. The crowd slowly reduced till there was only one person left. When there remained a few people, you quietly moved to one person to ask for the reason why they were so cheerful today.
"Jungwon, do you know why everyone is so happy today? My shop was full today!"
"Are you complaining about it?" He asks. Jungwon was the son of the cafe shop owner. He came to your shop frequently when he was on his break and you would talk to each other.
“Of course, I’m not. I just want to know what’s making everyone come here all of a sudden. Even old man Jay came here and you know that man never leaves his house. He bought a red carnation and I’m confused because who does he have affection for that he’s getting them flowers”
“He has a wife you know”
“Please, the last time they had a conversation with each other was when he asked for a divorce” you deadpanned.
“Look Y/N, who’s the one person in this town anyone would do anything for?”
“Kim Junkyu?”
“Close but not him, I wouldn’t do anything for him” Jungwon stated making you roll your eyes.
“The only person left is Sim Jaeyun and we know it’s not possible”
“Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner”
You give him a shaky smile before asking him, “You’re joking right?”
“I’m not,” he says sincerely. You nod your head and go sit on the nearest stool. Placing a hand on your throat as you begin to scratch at it (something you did when you were nervous) and just sit in silence while Jungwon continues talking.
“After the award ceremony, his management released a statement on his Instagram saying that he would be going on hiatus for two months to visit his family. So we townsmen decided to get flowers to pave the road with because he would be coming back. We would have used gold leaves but it’s too expensive”
He continued talking and talking while you were still trying to process the fact that Jake would be coming back. Physically he was still going to be the same Jake you had a crush on before he left but personality-wise? You doubted that. You heard stories of the way fame had changed people; the love from others would get to their heads and make them overly egotistical. A part of you knew that he wouldn’t change but the other part was unsure. Before he left, you made him promise to not change and while you knew promises could be broken, you knew he wouldn’t break them.
“Jungwon, I want to close the shop for today. I’m not feeling too well and want to rest a bit”
“No problem Y/N! If you want, I can stay here and do business for you”
“Don’t worry about it, I’ve made enough money today to last me for next month” you say and shoo him away.
At home, you just sit and think for some time before getting up to make some tea and reminiscing about your high school memories. You hardly had feelings for people so when you did, you let them know immediately. When you told Jake that you liked him, he told you that he felt the same. You ignored him for a week after that because you didn’t think that far. After that, you met up with him and explained the reason why you avoided him. You went out with each other for less than 2 weeks and during that period, he had told you about his dreams of becoming an artist and you supported him wholeheartedly.
He would carry your books from school and you both would walk home together every day. He'd play the violin for you because he was good. You'd both pet stray cats and run when they started chasing you. All good things came to an end when he told you that he had to leave to pursue his dream. You both knew you were too young to even attempt a long-distance relationship so you let each other go even though it hurt. You’d watch his music videos and support his activities even though there was a possibility he would never return. Now that he was going to be here, how were you going to cope knowing that your feelings for him were still the same while his feelings could have gone, especially with all the beautiful people in the industry?
That night, while everyone was outside welcoming Mr Hollywood, you stayed in your house dreading the days that would come. The town was small so there was no way that you wouldn’t bump into him. The voices were loud when you tried to sleep. Seems like everyone was ecstatic that Jake had come back. The noise wasn’t able to let you sleep but deep down you knew it was because you were nervous.
You decide to bake cookies to reduce the stress you are currently feeling. You had learnt from your mistakes and no longer burnt kitchens (your kitchen being valid proof of that), but Jungwon’s dad still wouldn’t lift his ban. You baked cookies till 2 am before you were really tired enough to sleep. You had baked almost a hundred cookies that night.
The next morning, you made sure to wake up early so you wouldn’t run into anyone. Thankfully, the townspeople didn’t want to buy flowers that morning and got started on the orders that people out of town had placed. You brought cookies for Jungwon so he could test them. You were trying to fix the counter when someone walked in, making the bell jingle. Assuming it was Jungwon, you say, “Jungwon the cookies are on the counter. Test them and tell me what you think, don’t eat them and run away”
“I’m not a Jungwon but can I talk to Y/N?” You’re startled but you freeze, instantly recognizing the voice. Jake Sim.
“Hello, what would you like?” you asked with a forced smile. You were way too close, the proximity was making you uneasy. He looked a bit disappointed with the way you answered him but what did he expect to come to? It had been five years.
“I just wanted to tal-” he is cut off by Jungwon bursting through the door.
“Y/N, you will not believe who I saw. I saw Jake Sim with my very own two eyes. He looks so much hotter in real life. Do you think he’d sign my back if I asked-” he stopped instantly when he saw the person that was in the flower shop.
He looked like a fish out of water with the way his mouth was agape. Looking at you, then at Jake and then you again. He brought his hand to his head and he hit it hard making you startled.
“Sorry I will leave now,” Jungwon said.
“To cry” he murmured, making you chuckle. Jungwon was someone that cried when he did something embarrassing.
“Jungwon wait,” you say and walk to give him the cookies you had packed for him with a little note.
“Eat them and get back to me when you’re less you know...embarrassed” He snatches them from your hands and makes a run for the door. You giggle then you remember that Jake was still present. Turning to face him, you ask if he wants anything. “I want to talk to you”
You motion him to sit on the spare chair you had and he obliges. Before you even ask him a question, he begins, “Was that your boyfriend?”
“No, not that it concerns you though”
“Where you last night? I saw everyone but you. The Johnny kid said you were feeling ill. I doubt that wasn’t true as you made cookies. The last time I remembered, you were really bad at anything relating to the kitchen”
“Times change and people change, Jaeyun. It’s been 5 years since we last had a conversation with each other. I’m not the same and I’m sure you’re not the same either”
“Let’s get to know each other again. Do things the old fashioned way. Go on dates, paint, and bake with each other. Do some of the things we could have done 5 years ago.”
“And then when you have to leave and have no contact with each other again”
“I won’t do that, I promise. Never again.”
“How can you be so sure of that?”
“Let me prove it to you-”
He’s cut off by the entrance of another customer and stands up to leave but you don’t miss the longing look in his eyes. You hope he can see the same look in yours that’s covered by hurt and waiting for someone to return.
You were not expecting Jake to be at your store first thing on a Friday morning. He was even earlier than you and you're the boss.
“What are you doing here?” you ask. He was bouncing on his feet and looking cherry when you hadn’t even gotten enough sleep.
“I’m here to take you out. Do it like the old times where I’d wait for you so we could go to school together”
“I have work to do today and I’m going to be booked so another time”
“I have come to offer my assistance so tomorrow we can go out together”
“Don’t you have things to do?”
“I’m on a hiatus, I’m free for almost two months and if you want I can be free for more. Imagine all the things we could do in that time” he trails off, fantasizing when you hadn’t even told him that you still liked him. Meanwhile, you had opened the door and walked in.
"Aren't you going to come in and stop thinking of cute stuff?" you ask him and he quickly runs in, flustered.
He takes a look around and puts on a determined face and gets a broom and starts cleaning. For someone that's supposed to be a celebrity, he was cleaning like an employee. You take a rag and wipe all the surfaces and take care of the flowers. After an hour, the shop is ready to open. Customers come rolling in once they see a new help. Although they're surprised, they don't question it.
During your break, Jake picks up a chrysanthemum and hands it to you. "It's for you because you're beautiful," he says
"Hate to rain on your parade but if you gave me this in Italy, it means you wish I were dead" and with that, he takes back the flower instantly and brings a single red rose. You receive it with a small laugh, finding it funny when he doesn't want you misinterpreting him. You were having a sweet moment with him until Jungwon came in again.
"I'm getting tired of seeing you here Mr Sim. As much as I adore you, I need to meet my friend" he states and pulls you to the back. "Care to explain why Jake Sim is in your store again!?"
"Nope" you respond, popping the p. He brought his hand to his forehead and tried to relax his muscles because according to him, he doesn't want to look forty-five when he's thirty years old.
"Look, it's weird coming here and seeing you have company. I'm not against you having company seeing as you've been lonely the entire time I've known you but, I can't stay in his presence! Why must a man Look so gorgeous!? He's ruining my already broken esteem. Everybody saw him in real life and was wondering how a man could look that good."
"They saw him when he was seventeen years old," you tell him.
"And he's twenty-three now! He doesn't look the same and I don't even need to have known him then to know now"
"Jungwon, I want you to get to the point," you tell him, basically pleading at that point because your break would soon be over.
"I'll see you when I have enough confidence to meet him," he says and leaves the store. You shake your head at his overdramatic behaviour and continue with your day. Jake proves to be amazing assistance and you got things done quicker and even closed earlier.
"Thank you for offering help, you can go home now. See you tomorrow" you say in an attempt to shoo him out.
"I want to walk you home" he announces and goes with you home.
"Do you hate me for not talking to you?" he asks.
"I don't hate you. To be honest, I think we both did the right thing by not talking to each other. It was good we had each other in mind but I would have caused too much of a distraction for you. It was great you focused on your career and achieved your goals. I did well too"
"Johnny boy said you were lonely though," he said.
"Number one, I know you know his name is Jungwon but you're just being petty. Two, why were you eavesdropping on our conversation and three, I still had a bit of hope that one day you'd return. I didn't think that you'd come" you say truthfully. The night was making you vulnerable when answering his questions.
"I always asked my mum how you were doing when I called her, you know? I wanted to check up on you without doing so myself. I'd ask her to give you a pop tart because I knew they were your favourite"
Even though he was still far away, he still had kept you in his mind the same way you did for him.
You got home and stayed at the door before you took him by the shoulder and said, "Let's go out together and have fun". He gives you a soft smile and watches you go in before he retires to his own home.
The following day, you're waiting for him to come. You had tried to dress up for the date but didn't want to underdress or overdress since he hadn't told you where you were going. So you decided to wear a simple sundress and made yourself look nice. He arrived wearing something as casual as you in a car.
"Is this your dad's?" you questioned.
"Yup, I borrowed it to take you out,” he says and winks at you. You shake your head laughing and get in the passenger seat and he drives.
“Where are we going?” you ask, curious.
“You’ll see when we get there” you don’t respond but wind down the window and feel the wind on your face which makes you smile.
You catch Jake glancing at you while he’s driving and he doesn’t even try to hide it. “At least try to pretend you’re not starting”
“I can’t help it, you’re so pretty” This kid, he was making it too easy for you to fall for him.
“Do you still like me, Jaeyun?” you inquire.
“I do,” he said with certainty. Has he always been this bold? You don’t say anything and continue to look out so he reaches over and takes one of your hands in his while he uses his other one to drive. You look at him but just continue doing what you’re doing.
“You might not believe me but I mean it,” he says, lightly squeezing your hand as a form of reassurance.
He stops the car at an aquarium and you both come out. You have a wonderful time and although people recognize him and are surprised to see him with you, they don't say anything and leave you alone. You smiled that day more than you had ever smiled before.
"The fishes look good to eat" you whisper in his ear and he playfully smacks your arm and jokes.
"You monster! How can you say that!?" to which you jokingly shrug.
After the aquarium, he takes you to a flower field. "I did my research this time so I don't give you a wrong flower." He picked up a primrose and says, "I know this one means love is eternal so I'm giving it to you because no matter the distance between us, our love will be forever"
You feel warm this time and know that even if he were to leave again, the distance wouldn't matter because together, you both could overcome anything.
"You're all I need" you manage to say.
"When did you get all sentimental?" he teases and you chase after him in the flower field. When you get tired, you lie down on the grass and he lays next to you. Your hands find his hands amid all the grass and you squeeze it. Unknowingly, you fall asleep next to him.
The next weeks that follow include you two bonding and Jake having fun and being relaxed. He was able to write a song but wouldn't let you see the lyrics, saying it wasn't something he wants you to see yet. You met his parents and thanked his mum for taking care of you indirectly and conversed with his dad too. You could tell that he hadn't forgotten any of the values his parents had thought him. He grew up surrounded by a lot of love so he had more than enough to give.
He also met your parents and he was nervous even though you had tried to reassure him that they wouldn't do anything to him. Your father tried to act scary but deep down you knew he had a soft spot for him. Your mom was showering with more affection than she gave you and Jungwon tried stylishly asking him for his celebrity crush numbers.
"Jake, since you're dating my friend can you link me up with Han Sohee? You've worked with her before, help a friend out"
"I'll ask her but no promises" Jungwon was so happy the entire day.
A few days before Jake had to go back because his hiatus was over, you both were talking about how things would be while baking muffins.
"Y/N don't think I won’t talk to you when I go because I can already see the gears turning in your head."
"Pass me the butter Jaeyun"
"Are we back to the first-name basis? Call me the sweet names" he whined.
"Just pass the butter babe" and he passes it instantly.
"Now back to what you were saying, I know you won't forget me obviously and if you try I I can always take a flight to get to you." You tell him. You weren't going to wait around for him anymore. If you missed him, you'd go see him if he was unable to come to see you.
"Better, I was already worried," he says and gives you a back hug.
The day he left was bittersweet and you shed a few tears. It took a lot of willpower to not cry in front of him. You didn't want him to leave but you knew that he had a job to get to and you couldn't be in the way of that.
You both regularly kept in touch, calling each other at least twice a week to catch up on what had happened during each other's week. He hadn't told you that he released a new song and you found out through his fanboy Jungwon who was now the self-acclaimed president of his fan club.
"Y/N, have you heard Jake's new solo? I cried to it for an hour straight" You didn't have any time to check what was going on because someone had ordered flowers for their wedding and you had to get them done quickly.
"New solo?" you ask and Jungwon sits you down and plays the song for you. Truth be told, you cried as well. It felt like he was there with you telling you that he'd never change.
You watched the interview and when he was asked about the meaning or person behind the song, he said, "There's someone that I love and I wanted to let her know that no matter how famous I get, I won't ever change and she shouldn't change either". He looked directly at the camera then continued, "You're stuck with me forever".
That night, you called him and cried on the phone to him telling him about how you saw the interview.
"Y/N, you know I care about you" you sobbed even harder.
"I care about you too, forever"
"Forever baby, regardless of the distance"

After therapy starts, Jaden’s nightmares become less frequent, but that worries Seto because he hear his son talking to someone. One night he goes to check on Jaden and sees Atem’s spirit sitting in the bed and talking to the boy.
As much as Kaiba didn't want to admit it, Bakura had been a big help. Little by little Jaden was getting away from his nightmares. He was still drawing cards for spirits but the sheer volume had slowed down and he was spending more time with his family.
Kaiba's heart finally went back to his normal rhythm, he couldn't help but smile. And it lasted a while, but before lomg Kaiba started getting concerned again. He noticed that when Jaden was alone in his room, he was talking to someone.
Not the usual suspects of Yugi, Joey and Tristan or even Bakura, he was talking to someone else.
Someone Kaiba couldn't see on the security cameras and that made him terrified. What if it was some malicious entity that was trying to take his son...one night on such an occasion, Kaiba burst through Jaden's room.
The sight made him freeze.
There was Jaden, curled up in bed with a sleepy yet happy smile looking at a glowing familiar looking spikey haired spirit who was also sitting cross legged on his sons bed talking to him.
"And than you beat pops?" Asked Jaden, the spirit smiled "yup, and he hasn't let me live it down."
The door shut, alerting them of his presence. "You're meant to asleep young man" said Kaiba, ignoring how his voice caught up in his throat and tried so hard to imagine it was Yugi sat with his son... Not him.. It couldn't be it was impossible.
But Kaiba found the more he got older that there was little that was impossibe.
"Sorry, bye Mr Pharaoh" said Jaden, he was already falling asleep to Atem's story. Atem chuckled "goodbye Jaden" He said, watching as the boy went out like a light.
"So it is you..." Said Kaiba, he felt like an idiot pointing out the obvious but he couldn't help it. Never in his life did he expect to see him again. "Hello Kaiba" smiled Atem, turning to face him properly. Kaiba didn't know to say, a thousand questions were running through his mind. For once he didn't have a smart retort.
"You know, until I saw the blue eyes poster on his wall I didn't think he was yours" said Atem, a small smirk on his face. Just like he always had. "Well you've got to educate them young" said Kaiba, getting a chuckle from the other. "Funny I thought the same thing and told him of our dual." Kaiba shot him an icy glare and Atem whistled innocently.
It was painful Kaiba realised, how easily they slipped back into their old banter as if nothing had changed. As if no time had passed and they were trying to save the world together.
"How are you here... And why" said Kaiba, pushing past his feelings to utilise his mind. Atem smiled, as if he expected this "well I'm not entirely sure how, other than i feel I was summoned to the field by someone who needed me" He replied. Kaiba rolled his eyes "cryptically vague as usual I see" he said, "yes well what did you expect from me?" He joked, Kaiba almost chuckled.
"So what you've decided to hang up your deck to be my sons guardian angel?" Asked Kaiba sarcastically, Atem chuckled "I suppose so... I thought whatever connection I had to this world would bring me to Yugi but I guess it lead me here to you." He said, his voice soft "I felt you calling for me too... But I wasn't able to show up till recently."
Kaiba's eyes widened "you felt that..." Atem nodded "I must say... I can't say I'm surprised but all that to beat me in a card game?" He asked, Kaiba rolled his eyes... As if it were that simple.
"Well being my sons guardian angel requires you to say hi from time to time, we want to teach him manners afterall... And that means your required to go with him when he's out... I'm sure his aunt Tea and uncle Yugi, uncle Joey and uncle Tristan will be happy to see you." Said Kaiba, he was rambling but he didn't care. Didn't notice how Atem's eyes widened and the soft and happy smile on his face at the realisation.
"I'll do you proud, Kaiba" said Atem, Kaiba snorted "you better..." He got up, needing to leave "I guess I'll see you later... Pharaoh."

“Then stop being jealous!” Emma hissed.
Benjamin expected another strike, but she amazingly refrained. Curling his upper lip at her, he challenged, "If you truly believe I don't wish to bed you, then what makes you think I would ever be jealous? Jealousy stems from an intrinsic desire to have something, to possess that something, and you've already made it abundantly clear that I am not allowed to desire you."
At long last, Emma finally appeared chastened. Her concession over Caleb's feelings, however brief, caused a flare of surprise to rocket within Benjamin's chest.
“I apologize," she said. "I do not wish to hurt Mister Finnegan. I would very much like to be friends with him, if anything. Besides, I doubt he would ever harbor any real feelings towards me. As you said, he’ll choose you over me, and you’ve made it clear you do not approve of my existence.”
Benjamin huffed. "There you go again, putting words into my mouth. I have never once said I disapprove of your existence. If I did, would I truly be trying so hard to earn your maddening affections?"
Emma perched her hands on her hips. “Perhaps if you courted me properly, like a true gentleman, I wouldn’t need to make you jealous. If you wish for me to accept a marriage proposal, you could at least pretend to be likable.”
Benjamin's head started to spin. "First you tell me it will never, ever happen, and now you suggest it might, should I court you like a 'true gentleman'? What does that even mean, Miss Dunster?"
Emma crossed her arms and looked away. “If you’re genuinely interested in me, act like it. Otherwise I would rather you treat me with the distain you truly feel.”
Benjamin finally believed he understood. Emma, though aloof and beautiful, also had a delicate ego like the rest of mankind, and it wouldn't behoove him to treat her without the hot-and-cold mannerisms of espionage. He didn't truly need to marry her, but he had to make sure it seemed like he did.
"I don't hate you," he finally offered, startled by the sincerity in his tone. "You may be irksome and frustrating beyond belief, but...it gets the blood pumping. And perhaps that's a health benefit rather than a risk." Amusement danced behind his eyes, and before he could think better of it, he took Emma's chin between thumb and forefinger, lifting so that they were forced to lock eyes.
"I don't hate you," he said again more firmly. "And I never said I don't wish to bed you. These past few nights have been torturous. I've dreamt of you in my arms, your mouth on mine and your body welcoming me deeper and deeper inside as I chase my pleasure with-"
The barn door creaked open then, causing Benjamin to jerk back in a panic. He dropped his hands at his sides, spinning about guiltily as Caleb poked his head into the musty space.
"Are you two done yet? Cripes alive, I'm freezing my nutting bag off out here!" he complained, stamping his feet for good measure. "Are we ridin' or not?"
Benjamin glanced toward Emma, a faint pink in his cheeks. Perhaps riding wasn't the best word to use right now, given the memory of the fiery redhead attempting to slide into his lap. "Um...I think I should head to the house," he deflected. "Miss Dunster was right: you two probably are better-suited for the outing."
Caleb scoffed. "I never said I was done with you, Tallboy!"
Benjamin spared him an admonishing look. He thankfully was tall, so the nickname derived from "Tallmadge" hardly would've stirred Emma's suspicions. Or at least, he hoped.
"I can see you later," he dismissed. "I have a meeting with Mr. Dunster and his friends."
"Well, lah-dee-dah. Can I at least get an invite to dinner?"
Caleb was laying it on thick now, and quite pushing it, but Benjamin looked toward Emma with a tight smile. "If the lady and her father allow it, then I suppose that would be all right."
“What does it matter if I invited you when you refused? You’re clearly not interested in bedding me-- which I suppose I should be grateful for, but…” Letting out a huff, Emma shook her head. To finish that sentence would be to confess more than she cared to admit. And she'd already given him enough for one day.
“Then stop being jealous!” She challenged, as though it were as simple as choosing to not be ruffled. If he didn't want her trying to make him jealous, then he should stop acting like he was jealous. His behaviors only made Emma want to taunt him, want to make him confess deeper feelings that he had, whether they were positive or negative.
“I do know how to count, thank you very much. And I believe your vulgar words about my body deserved a slap to the face. Thus, we are even." Rubbing at her fingers beneath the leather, she continued, ignoring the light sting that such a blow had induced. "Unless you think insulting my womanhood deserves two slaps?”
And he deserves true affection, does he not? She averts her gaze, knowing he was right. If she kept up the charade long enough, Emma didn't think it would've been impossible to grow genuine feelings for someone like Mister Finnegan, but that didn't change the fact that her reasons for pursuing him were disingenuous.
“Yes...” Emma conceded with a weak nod. “He does.”
By all means his associate seemed genuinely sweet and the thought of flirting with him for purely selfish, insincere reasons wasn’t fair. His concerns for his friend were understandable and as much as she wanted to despise everything he did, she couldn’t deny that his protectiveness towards his friend was admirable. A part of her wondered if he’d be as protective of her if they married.
“I apologize. I do not wish to hurt Mister Finnegan. I would very much like to be friends with him, if anything. Besides, I doubt he would ever harbor any real feelings towards me. As you said, he’ll choose you over me, and you’ve made it clear you do not approve of my existence.” She ignored the fact that she was supposed to hate him, too. That she had been the one intent on making her distaste towards him known from the second they met.
“Don’t be ridiculous. Why would I want you to want me?” She scoffed, but it didn’t hide the way she paled at the realization.
She did want him to want her. At first, it was merely so she could use it against him. So that the wound would be deeper once she’d sunken her claws in and tore them out. But after the kiss, after seeing the slivers of warmth beneath his arrogant façade, Emma couldn’t deny that a part of her wanted him to want her. At least if she knew he wanted her for more than her money, she might be willing to accept a proposal.
“Perhaps if you courted me properly, like a true gentleman, I wouldn’t need to make you jealous. If you wish for me to accept a marriage proposal, you could at least pretend to be likable.” Emma crossed her arms over her chest and looked away. “Instead of tricking me into kissing you and then rejecting me when I offer you more. You invoke impropriety and then deny it when I try to reciprocate, so make up your mind. If you want me for my family’s money, that’s one thing, but I don’t appreciate being thrown about like a ragdoll for your childish enjoyment. If you’re genuinely interested in me, act like it. Otherwise I would rather you treat me with the distain you truly feel.”

Opening the door to your apartment, you sigh.
It was a long day. The photoshoot lasted longer than you expected, and you didn't even get a chance to reprint your schedule. It was for the best though, you supposed. Namjoon didn't need you to do much of anything else besides assist him while he set up to get some work done.
Biting your bottom lip, you try not to feel guilty that you left him all alone. He said he needed no distractions, but you pray he doesn't pull an all-nighter. Knowing him, however...Glancing down at your phone, you wince at the week's schedule Mr. Sejin gave to you before leaving. He told you that getting a daily schedule would be tedious, and informed you that weekly schedules would be sent to you every Sunday.
As for this week...
They have hardly any free time, especially Namjoon. Filled to the brim with practices, photoshoots, and interviews...you can't imagine what it'd be like when promotions start. He really shouldn't be pulling all-nighters nowadays, he needs to rest now to prepare for the workload that will come his way.
You scoff.
Who are you kidding? Namjoon won't be likely to do that. He's the type to pour out every last of his waking spirit into his work. Even if you did go back to help, you'd probably be in the way. Not to mention the fact he wouldn't listen to a word you say.
Shaking your head, you wonder if your mother felt the same way when she was raising you.
Studying all night, practicing until your voice was sore or you couldn't dance anymore, pushing yourself to the very limit, preparing for your dream...
Swallowing hard, you push the thought out of your mind.
You don't have time for guilt.
Slipping out of your shoes, you advance, locking the door tightly behind you. In the corner of your mind, you wonder if Sunoh is sleeping already. Glancing at the clock, you roll your eyes. If he wasn't, he'd be crazy.
3 am already?
Reminds you of the times you would write till the wee hours of the morning. Creating countless stories and adventures, different worlds and different people, trying to find a way to escape when you had nowhere else to run. When was the last time you were inspired to even pick up a pencil much less write?
"I hate being alone." You murmur, rubbing your face. "I always think too much."
Setting your satchel on the counter island, you empty its contents and come across the contract. Freezing, you slowly pull it out and stare at it.
This is your dream.
So why are you hesitating?
Taking it to the table, you pull out a chair and carefully set it down.
It couldn't hurt to read through, could it?
You wonder why you are so afraid. What he did wasn't even something to be worried about. But when the one you cherish the most tells you you'll never make it, that you aren't talented enough...
He heard your voice and called it mediocre, amateur, and told you to find a new dream. Told you to give up on something you would never succeed at. Told you everything you worked so hard for was worthless. It was unrealistic, it wasn't worth trying.
You'd never make it anyway.
You weren't nearly as pretty enough to fit their standards.
You weren't perfect enough to pass their expectations.
You weren't made for the dream, so you shouldn't be given the chance to achieve them.
Groaning, you try to swallow the lump in your throat, you try to ignore everything you wish to hold back, but you can't.
How?
How could they see that you were worth something?
Obviously, you aren't worth that much, obviously, you aren't that special...
"Why are you hesitating?"
Remembering what Suga said, you wonder at the question yourself.
This is supposed to be your dream, you are supposed to hold onto it no matter what others tell you. No matter what people may think. It's something that's made to be eternal, that won't give up as long as you don't give up either.
Are you afraid?
"Yes. I'm terrified."
But why are you terrified? Why can't you forget the past?
"What if he's right? What if I'm not cut out for this?"
So are you afraid of what others think?
"No."
Then what is it?
You think of everyone who is counting on you, their high expectations. What they are risking for you. You think of the people who came before you, how hard they tried for this chance, just so they can achieve a dream they may never get. You think of your mother, who lost the very same dream and could never achieve it.
What is holding you back?
"What if I let them down?" you whisper softly, as a tear finally escapes its blockade and lands on the very same contract you've been holding in your hands.
You've dreamed of this. Receiving your first contract and signing with a company, ready to become a trainee, ready to be the singer; the performer you've always wanted. You've imagined the scenario in your head, acted it out many times over and over again. This was supposed to be a happy moment, the moment when all your hard work meant something. The moment when you finally took the next step towards your goal.
Inwardly, you want to scream in joy. You want to cry from happiness. But that fear, that blockade of terror, that is the one thing that holds you back.
What if when you finally let go, when you allow yourself to be happy again, it's ruined?
I gave everything to you.
"Shut up."
But you threw it away.
"Stop."
And for what? A dream that will never find its way out of your head?
"You're not here."
It's worthless hoping for something that can never happen.
"You don't know that."
Do you want to be worthless?
"You don't get to dictate my life."
Biting your lip, turn the final page of the contract, and find the dotted line. A line that will sign your life away. A line that holds every dream, every wish, every hope you've gathered in your small wish to be an idol. To sing on the stage, to perform and touch the world with your music.
Your world.
Finding a pen amongst the confines of your satchel, you put the tip gently to the paper and sign your name.
You smile once you do, and hold your hands to your face.
Letting out a small shriek, you let your excitement take control of your body and you allow the euphoric feeling of happiness to spread throughout you. You push back the feelings of doubt, the paralyzing helplessness of terror. For now, that doesn't matter. At this moment, those feelings aren't important.
Who cares about what's to happen in the future?
Would you rather be held back because of things you can't control?
No, this is your choice. This is your life.
You make the choice, no one else can make it for you.
At the harsh ringer of the phone, you jump. Startled, you turn to it from where it sits on the counter and check the caller ID.
One step at a time right?
That's all it takes to be okay again.
To move on.
Maybe it's time you talked to her.
Setting the pen down, you pick up your phone, taking a deep breath before accepting the call.
"Hi, Mom."
she finally called her mom! question, on a scale of 1-10 how angry would your guys' mom be if you ghosted her for this long? 0.o cuz mine would disown me for the longest time.

A/n: A new chapter for those of you who were waiting for this! I hope you enjoy it 💕🖤💕 again tagging @ayocee because you were a big help in making this love u boo😘
Part 1
Part 2
“You are too damn cute,” Daichi said breathlessly as he kissed you against the library bookshelf.
You couldn’t help but giggle, “Daichi- you’re going to get u-us in trouble.” You said inbetween his kisses, But he didn’t seem to care as he pushed up closer against you and deepened the kiss.
That’s how the last few days had been. You had been wrapped in everything that was Daichi. And you had been enjoying every second of it.
How did you get so lucky? Was all you could wonder. First, a random guy who is insanely hot pops up into your life and returned your precious wallet; And on top of that, he was interested in you!
And it’s been since that day you the two of you had been meeting up.
You had been right. You did have a few classes with him. And when you saw him the next day he offered to sit next to you and walk you to your next class. To which you happily agreed.
And after a few walks around campus and late-night texting sessions, you found yourself really enjoying his company. Hints the reason why you were making out during one of your study sessions in the library
So needless to say the two of you really really did hit it off.
And things really had been blissful with Daichi. He really was all the things you had thought he was, handsome, charming, funny, caring. He was literally everything you wanted in a guy.
Except there was one problem…
He wasn’t so keen on being in a relationship.
“I just got out of a relationship Y/n…” He told you the first time you brought up being his girlfriend and making things official.
“But I do like you a lot so I can definitely see myself with you if we keep this up, ” And looking into his beautiful brown eyes you believed him. And you had hope that there was a passionate relationship in the future for you two.
“But doesn’t that upset you? It’s been like a month since you started talking. What do you wanna do? Are you going to keep seeing him? ” Your friend asked you once they knew you and Daichi had been seeing each other for a few weeks. And nothing had been declared official yet.
“I don’t know...I mean I get why he doesn’t want to rush into anything, but I believe if I give him a little time we’ll be together...He’s a good guy.” You told her confidently. If anything you were trying to convince yourself. Maybe it was because of all those bad relationships of your past you were doubtful. "He just got out of a relationship he just needs time."
Daichi was different. He had to be. He was nice..he’s a good guy.
Her only response was a sigh, “Alright I trust your judgment. But even nice guys can have a bad side.”
Once again you found yourself just hoping you were right.
Things kept getting more intense with Daichi. Which was good and bad; Bad because even after seeing each other for over 3 months he still didn’t want to make it official and good because even though that was the case you still couldn’t get enough of him, he was just so good to you. He always listened to you. He was was making sure you were comfortable with him. He was literally perfect.
But you weren’t so stupid and naive, and again it might have been because of all the other times you had been used. That you had made a deal with Daichi. No sex until you were official.
The only problem with that was Daichi seemed okay with it. Make out sessions and dry humping was working for him. And he respected your boundaries, And it annoyed you to no end because the whole reason you said that was to encourage him. But that didn’t work.
There was one other issue too...His friends.
You weren’t sure if they like you or not. It wasn’t that they were mean to you either. If anything they were indifferent. Daichi talked about them all the time, making them sound fun and lively. And when you met them they all seemed great, but whenever you were around you couldn’t help but get the feeling they were all having a conversation about you behind your back. It made yoi feel uneasy. But you pushed it too the back of your mind.
“You really falling for all that? His one friend Kuroo asked you one day. After Daichi had left to do something, leaving you with his friends. Out of all of Daichi's friends he was the one that you were sure you didn’t like. As far as you were concerned Kuroo was a nerd and who was annoying and he seemed to always have something snarky to say whenever he saw you with Daichi.
“What jealous? You can't be as charming as him?” You quipped back at him.
Kuroo snorted with an eyeroll, “Sure.”
Annoyed with his attitude you spoke up again, "Whats you deal anyway? Aren't you supposed to be his friend? Or do you just not like us together?"
Kuroo signed closings his notebook and packing up his things where he was studying, “I’m just watching this one play out. It’s a shame tho you seem nice.” He was so condensing. It was always something vague with him. But you just roll your eyes and continue about your way, not giving his words much thought.
Having no idea what his words really meant.
But all good things must come to an end.
It was a random day when you saw Daichi. He had been texting you as normal all-day. And everything seemed fine. You guys even planned on seeing each other later that night to study.
But then you saw him as you were heading back to your dorm.
That itself wouldn’t have been a problem if not for the fact he told you he was still had work to do in one of his classes, and the fact you saw him with someone else. And not just anyone. Another girl.
And again that wouldn't have been a problem either if not for the fact he had his hands wrapped around her, and she him as the two of them stood there kissing in broad daylight. Not caring who saw them. Which was very different from anytime you were with him. It wasn’t like he was keeping you a secret he took you around his friends after all...but now that you were really thinking about it you never been with him kissing outside in the middle of the campus who was she?
They stopped kissing and stood there talking for a bit smiling and staring into each other eyes, just like you usually do with him and you felt the sting in your heart. You almost felt bad for just standing there watching them. Like you were invading their privacy, but they were out in public…
You wanted an answer.
You don’t know where you got the courage from but you didn’t want to be a bystander in this. So you went up to them. Praying that she wasn’t anyone serious to him. That maybe she was like you and they hadn’t been made official and you still had a chance. You still wanted hope that you and Daichi could be together.
“Hey, Daichi!” You said in a voice that was way too high.
Daichi seemed to freeze for a moment when he saw you, “oh-Y/n...Hey..er- how have you been?”
He really was acting like the two of you hadn’t been texting just a few hours ago. And you felt your heart sinking.
“I’ve been fine, Daichi…” You started to trail off
But the girl spoke up, “Who’s this Di?”
He cleared his voice, “Um a girl I study with sometimes."
You couldn't believe it, Daichi didnt even have the decency to tell her your name.
Daichi seemed to pick up how that made you feel so clearing his voice he spoke up, "Y/n.."
But the girl looked at him expecting him to say more which he also picked up on, " Annnd Y/n- this my girlfriend (girls name)” He answered avoided your gaze.
You didn’t know what hurt the most that he couldn’t look at you, or that he was in a relationship when he had been leading you on all this time.
But not wanting to embarrass yourself in front of him anymore. You faked a smile, “Yeah, ummm...I-I was just asking if you had any trouble- with that problem number 4 on the test today?” You asked him out of the blue.
Daichi seemed to sigh with relief that you weren’t making a scene, “Yeah, I did actually. But I’m sorta busy right now but we can go over it later alright?”
You were so hurt, and you were trying not to cry, “Don’t bother...I'll figure it out” You told him before walking away.
This was a nightmare! You felt betrayed! How could he? The events of the last few minutes replayed in your head. A girlfriend? No wonder he didnt want to be in a relationship with you, he was already in one! You wished so hard that it wasnt true. That he would run after you and tell you it was a joke. That you were the one he wanted. That the last few months with him weren't a lie.
But that wasn't going to happen.
You got far enough to where you were sure they couldn’t see you before you let your emotions flow....He had a girlfriend you repeated in your head over and over again. You felt so used, and stupid. This was far worst than the other guys, Because you actually believed he was different; that he was your Mr. Perfect.
But you were so wrong.
“Oof that was awkward,” You heard someone say besides you, you quickly tried to wipe away the tears on your face. Only to look to see it was Kuroo. Great, of course, it was him out of all people you thought.
“I bet you’re really enjoying this,” You said trying your best to sound tough as you fiddled with your clothes and tired to make yourself look like you werent crying.
But kuroo wasnt so cruel to tease you while you were clearly upset, and he knew the reason why, “Y/n, I’m sorry-” He tried to tell you but you werent listening.
"I dont need you pity kuroo," You said rolling your eyes and leaving.
You didn’t have time to deal with another jerk. You thought you were done with them. Daichi was supposed to be a good guy. The one you could trust. The person that was going to make your life better.
But from what you just went through and that hollow feeling in your chest, you knew how wrong you were.

Scotrospective: Scott Pilgrim Vs the World (The Comic)
Hello, Hello, Hello scottaholics! And what a beautiful day it is: After decades lost in the lost woods, at least it had that catchy tune to keep it company, Scott Pilgrim Vs the World: The Game is FINALLY back and performing for you on all platforms!
Even Stadia, the platform most likely to disappear like this game did for a while! Cheap shots at the stadia aside as a huge fan of the franchise as a whole and of this game who played it back on the 360, and had since sold said 360 so I had no way to get it back or ever play the dlc packs. Seriously who didn’t want to play wallace but never got to? Everyone, everyone is the answer. But with those the entirety of what I consider to be the main cast is playable, it has online so you can beat up hipsters, guys in costumes and robots with your friends, it’s a good damn feeling. And since i’m in a celebratory mood, naturally i’m also feeling like a review. And since it just so happens the next volume up in my look at the comics is Vs the World, seriously I planned this review for this month without thinking to have it come out on the same day as the game until a week or two in, I felt there was no better way to celebrate the biggest day for Scott Pilgrim fans in some time.. and for Brian Lee O Malley as he’ll stop getting twitter asks about it. So with all the exposition taken care of LAST TIME, and the link right there if your curious, we can jump right in. On with the show!
After our opening titles, and yes this comic has opening titles, with Ramona sitting solmely in the rain.
And Scott caught in the title. The rain shot is real pretty by the way. But yeah once we get past those we’re taken back 7 years ago. Finn found out his father was an asshole, and voiced by Stephen Root so hey you take the good with the bad, Steven just learned the horrifying truth about Gem Monsters, Guardians of the Galaxy saved the MCU and I was trying to find work after college.. wait... sorry sorry that was 7 years ago from THIS year. The comic came out in 2005, though the comic takes place on a sliding timescale where only like 2 years pass so I dunno when this is. Let’s just say 98. Okay so 1998: Bill Cllinton’s sex scandal breaks, and puts way too much of hte blame on the young intern whose life came to be defined by one stupid mistake she made with a man who was way older and should’ve known better, the tide of the Monday Night War turned in favor of the WWF as Stone Cold Steve Austin became a household name, and it was an utterly standup year for video game relaases with Ocarina of Time, Banjo-Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot: Warped, StarCraft, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, WWF: War Zone, Pokemon Stadium, Spyro The Dragon, Pokemon Yellow, WarioLand 2, Oddworld: Abe’s Exodus, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Pokemon: Trading Card Game and Sonic Adventure. It’s like someone took a good chunk of my childhood and squeezed it into one year holy shit, I did not expect this when looking up what came out in 98.
And while the movie pool wasn't’ quite this amazing, we still had The Wedding Singer, The Big Lebowski, the dude abides, Batman and Mr Freeze: SubZero, The Truman Show, Mulan, the good one not the one made near concetration camps that makes her into a demigod, Saving Private Ryan, Blade, Simon Birch, Scooby Doo on Zombie Island, Rushmore, Bride of Chucky, HalloweenTown, Plesantville, and the Prince of Egypt. And in music Weird Al changed from his first signature look to his second, getting Lasik and growing out his hair. Seirously had no idea that was this year. Good to know. Also Elton John got his knighthood. Super shooters. I could go on with 1998 triva for days but I cannot go on for 8 weeks so let’s get to the point here.. during alllla this Scott Pilgrim, age 16, was starting St. John’s Catholic School and a couple of guys who were up to no good started making trouble. . by threatning to beat him up for no real reason. A fight insues and we cut to the principal’s office as Scott’s still a minor and not allowed to get into death fights just yet under the people’s freedom of choices and voices act.
It’s here he meets Lisa Miler, a peppy and sarcastic blonde, who’s intrigued by the fact Scott somehow got beat up after being here just 15 minutes and wants to be friends. Naturally for scott next we see him he’s busy playing video games, and annoyed someone else is around and wondering who this person whose now in his basement is. God no wonder teenage me related to him. So for the next few pages we see their friendship in time lapse: Lisa joins him at lunch, then geninely wonders since Scott’s Untentionally a dick if he hates her.. it’s part of why I think Scott has some form of autisim. And not just because I tend to belivie a character is on the spectrum all the damn time, it’s because of the way he acts: while he is nice and charming at times.. he also clearly has trouble relating to people or realizing how his actions effect them and as seen here in a younger form can often be compeltely distanced from normal social queues, not getting how his actions might be seen until Lisa outright talks to him about it. I mean.. it’s not a huge stretch, and it dosen’t mean he’s nto responsible for his own actions, but it does EXPLAIN a lot of them better: why he just sorta forgets about Knives post-ramona but at the same time still cares enough he dosen’t want to hurt her despite you know, that ship sailing just by having moved on.
But now the two are friends and his parents, who we meet for the first time and sister inquire about her being his girlfirned.. and by next jumpcut his parents apparently don’t want him hanging out with girls? What exactly the fuck? Also they mention Laurence, Scott’s brother whose missing for most of the books and has no real payoff for not being around. Next cut we get KIM!
Thank you Prissy. And she’s.. not all that different, assuming, correctly that their partner project, how she meets scott will just result in her doing all the work.. which not only is how these things usually went when I was in high school a decade later, but reminds me of the time me and my friends curtis and justin were put on a project and when asked who the alied powers were, guessed “Germany?”.... you can understand my fear. And also Curtis punching him for getting nothing done.. and not hard or brutally mind you just once quick in the gut and with full warning. Ah... the adaquate old days.
So back to Lisa as, since Scott’s Mom has a guitar.. a fact I.. never honestly thought about. Seriously I never realized her children, since the Bass Scott has for most of the books is Laurence’s, getting into music was probably due to her. Also Lisa makes her case for WHY be a band: the school has a regular event called Lunchapalooza, where everyone goes to and since by teen logic, just being in a band is automiacally cool, she figures they can jump from not QUITE being in any cliques to being super cool. Which honestly yeah... while I didn’t know any bands in high school, the fact one of my friends, ironically named Scott, was a DJ automatically made him pretty damn cool once he got past his awkard phase. I never got past mine but somehow was loved by all except that one douchey kid in our group who mocked me for naming my Luxray kim, assuming it was based on Kim possible and not Kim Pine... though frankly how that’s an insult when Kim Possible was a fucking awesome show and character is beyond me but he was just 17 and also a douchebag, it didn’t have to make since it just had to piss off the easily pissed off kid with aspergers. So Scott poses how they can be a band with just their guitars and Lisa concedes drums WOULD help.. I mean it’s what MADE Shallow Gravy.
So while Kim wonders if Scott is dating Lisa, because teenagers don’t really get girls and boys can be friends without wanting to be together, though not often as teenage boy brains can be rather stupid and horny... can confrim from personal experince. So it becomes clear Scott has a thing for Kim, and when Scott tries broaching it with Lisa she dosen’t take it well and he backpedals to asking her to be her drummer and plans to monday, proving Scott has somehow not gotten better at reading women, or anyone after 7 years. Can relate.
So yeah he decides to ask Monday, same day as their presentation.. and thankfully missed the bus as he arrives to find the Benvy Tech boys came in, took everyone out and abducted Kim. Because yeah, just in case you were wondering Scott’s life was always like this.. or was it? Questions for later. So one Canadian Version of River City Ransom later, Scott’s made his way to simon... who, since most of you have probably seen the movie or art of the movie.. looks an AWFUL lot like Gideon. Hrmmm. Simon is naturally the final boss here and wonders if this is the best St. Joels can muster. Scott quips back as only Scott can.
So cue an unsuprisingly awesome actoin sequence. IT’s part of why I love these color editions: While they already LOOKED thoroughly fantastic the added colors really help the series shonen manga meets old school video game vibe REALLY fucking pop. So Simon pleads mercy which like Scott delivering a good quip.. should’ve really been a red flag to younger me and is foreshadowing for later in case I was too subtle. He then does what any noble hero would do.. kicks simon into the sunset, tells Kim how he feels and asks her to play drums. They then make out. Awwww.
Lisa suprisingly takes it well as the next montage shows.. granted we’ll learn in Feburary she wasn’t QUITE as over scott as it seemed, but the three, along with a friend of Lisa’s whose name I forgot and who DOSEN’T come back so I’m not going to bother learning, form their own friend group, Scott and Kim get an A, and Scott, Kim and Lisa’s band is dubbed sonic and knuckles, which is an objectively awesome band name. Something the series really does great: Video Game Based Band Names. Crash and the Boys, Sex Bomb-Omb, Clash at the Demonhead... we need more bands like this in the real world dammit. So then they play their big game, the two loose their vrigniity.. and then Kim asks scott “your moving to tornoto?” And.. for now.. that’s that.
While the framing of that will be VERY important in the last volume, as notice how KIM’S the one who brings it up and it’s not explicitly stated scott actually told her, this flasback is great. While it does contribute to the volume’s drifty pacing, more on that as we go, it brilliantly sets up a LOT of stuff for later, paticuarlly Lisa who I assumed wouldn’t be back and younger me’s jaw fucking DROPPED when she popped up in Volume 4. Granted i’m spoiling that suprise for you now but odds are most of you reading this have either alreaddy read these or were probably wondering if the girl from the animated short ever had any actual relevance in the books. So yes, yes she does. She’s also the pink haired girl you see pop up in the game in the background, as a nod to O’Malley’s comic strip style which had her and Kim as the leads. Also yeah for fans of the game or movie or even the comics who were unaware.. this prologue got an animated adaption on adult swim to promote the movie. Naturally Micheal Cera and Allison Pill reprised their roles as Scott and Kim, with Mae Whitman voicing lisa.. and honestly being perfect for the roll, and Jason Schrwartzman voicing Simon naturally. While the animation is slightly limited, it still looks decent and expertly translates O’Malley’s art, while sliming things down slightly where needed to fit a short, and the anmation takes a huge bump for the fight scene which like the comic is short but awesome. While it has no real bearing on the film as Kim’s former relationship with Scott never really comes up or has any impact, as the Film while good was based primarily on volumes 1-3 with small pieces of 4 (paticuarlly the iconic “Lesbians gag”), with Wright working off outlines and drafts of 5 and 6, so the last half hour or so is mostly Wright’s invention.
Not a bad thing as it’s still awesome and not o’malley’s fault but it means kim dosen’t get to do much, and is a big reason why I want an adaptation on netflix or hbo max. While i’d still want changes both because there’s no sense doing an adaptation if your not going to make some tweaks of your own and because it’d be intresting to update the series to modern day, both in societal conventions and so everyone stops saying the r word. Seirously the most telling sign of the series age is that word showing up quite a bit during the first half of the series. Point is there is merit in doing another remix of the story and doing a longer form one so we can get more of the characters, as well as flesh out ones like Steven, Neil (Who was done WAY better in the movie adaptation thanks to the wonderful Johnny Simmons), and Stacey who got the shaft in the books. Again, not slagging off the movie, it’s really great. Just saying there’s always room for more Scott Pilgrim content and we all know it.
We’ll get back to the comic proper, and the present day of 2005, after the cut.
So the story proper opens with Scott dreaming of playing video games... because of course he is with Ramona walking in. and finding it charmingly pathetic but wanting her boyfriend to you know, get out of bed. It’s 11:30. So with Scott’s ass out of bed, we find Scott, Age 23 idiot with a heart of gold and Wallace, 25 king of all gays, on the bus as they talk it getting warmer and Lucas Lee, movie star and jason lee stand in coming to town to film a movie.. and Scott being Scott gets him confused for Luke WIlson. He’s also seen Bottle Rocket which.. good on him. Seriously while not wes anderson’s best film, those were made long afte this comic was published, it’s still a damn good one.. where was his career at this point... looking it up life aquatic was his most recent films and is still one of my favorites. So yeah he was in a good place career wise.
Scott proudly talks about having Ramona over in a couple days so she can see his place and meet Wallace. But as explained by Wallace for those of us just tuning in, he already met her last volume. You know during that time Stacey thought she could magically make her date not be attracted to someone else.. and yes even almost a month later not letting that one go. Stacey should know better. Not saying i’ts right Wallace keeps poaching her boyfriends, but she still shoudlnt’ try and force a relationship with a guy or even finish a date with one who makes out with someone else, regardless of gender, mid date. She deserves better. In general not just in this one scenario but we’ll get to that.
Point is while Scott, as usual, is a bit pissy about this Wallace.. has no time for that and issues an ultimatium
And he’s not bluffing, as he fully intends to tell Ramona the minute she walks in the door if he dosen’t break up with Knives. It really shows Wallace off at his best and why he’s Scott’s closest friend: Kim and Stephen do care about him but Kim both has a LOT of unresolved issues and sexual tension with him and keeps eveyrbody including Scott at arm’s length. And Stephen.. while he will OCASIONALLY call Scott out mostly just enables him, either ignoring his college buddy’s shittier behavior or playing along with it and backing him up when Kim rightfully calls him on being a dickhead. While both love their friend they just aren’t the best at dealing with his shit or getting why he does the things he does good and bad. Wallace on the other hand geninely likes Scott. He’ll lock him out of the house and tell him to sleep elsewhere so he can bang one out, he’ll not wear pants if he dosen’t have to and he’ll certainly hit on Scott just to get a rise out of him, phrasing.. but he also genuinely cares for the guy’s well being. He lets him sleep in their house basically rent free since scott has no money, buys most of their stuff, and is, as we’ll see in this one, the ONLY one of his friends to take an active part in the fight against the exes, training Scott and researching his opponents when he can get info. He won’t baby Scott as seen here, but he will help him, and he will be the harsh voice of reason his friend needs. And he did TRY doing a softer approach last time, simply telling scott to break up with his fake high school girlfriend. Scott had every chance to dump Knives during the last third of the first book.. it’s just a combination of both Knives and Ramona being in the same place and Scott getting panicky meant he balked. He NEEDS to be pushed into leaving Knives or he’s not gonna. And he also gets it’s not just Scott being a shifty coward: Scott DOES like Knives.. he just found someone who actually challenges him, intrests him and connects with him on his level, versus someone who worships and adores him like a puppy who just happens to be skilled with knives. The relationship with Knives. was an ego boost, an unequal paring that gave Scott the illusion of moving on from Envy. Ramona is him ACTUALLY moving on and given how badly Envy fucked him up, which comes into play in this book and the next, Wallace recognizes that Scott does need her... but this relationship can’t go anywhere if Scott is seeing someone else, and they both know it. Wallace is just the one who’s willing to do something about it to force scott to do something about it. He’s doing this for Knives too: it’s very clear he cares about the girl, was against this from the start, and knew this was going to end in pain and the faster Scott rips off the Band-Aid the faster she can move on to someone closer to her age and far more equal to her. Scott.. takes this about how you’d expect, even calling Double Standard, as Wallace does sleep around.. and while Wallace will be a homewrecker to Stacey.. otherwise it’s not remotley the same. Wallace does his sleeping around either casually or when he does get a partner, with their consent from what we can tell. He never cheats or anything, he just likes to bone. So yeah Scott doesn’t have a leg to stand on and acts accordingly.
One of my faviorite gags in the series and one that’s etched in my head for keeps. So with a justified Ultimatium over his head Scott calls knives to hang out. Knives.. shows off that as adorable and trusting as she is.. she’s also kind of creepy and shows up just outside the phone booth he’s calling her from. So the two go to a record store and Knives tries to get Scott into Clash at the Demonhead, her faviorite band. But since i’ts you know, headlined by Scott’s ex as we’ll find out, he’s not into it. But before that can get awkward.. it gets awkward in another way as Knives invites Scott to dinner at her parents place. Which is an objectively bad idea even before you get into the fact Scott wants a way out and as Volume 4 will show us her dad is both not happy with the idea of her dating a white guy and willing to use a katana to prevent it so he dodged a bullet there. Scott TRIES weasling out of it, but his “I’m too old for you” thing falsls on deaf ears.. and actually explains why she thinks this is normal: her parents are 9 years apart. of course obviously two consenting adults with a decade between them is a mite bit diffrent than 5 years between a teenager whose taking this way too seriously and a grown man whose taking this not seroiusly at all and dosen’t get how effed up this is. But Knives is too naive to get that, and papers over any possible concerns about her parents not wanting her to date a white guy with i’m in love. Seeing that he has no EASY way out of this, as he shouldn’t, Scott just rips off the band aid and bluntly breaks up with her, saying it’s not going to work out. Knives.. is clealry devistatd. To her this was a serious relationship.. and Scott realized that too late.. and thankfully while he didn’t break up with her in the best way, at all, simply syaing i’ts not going to work out and confirming to her he means it, it’s clear from his face this hurts to do and he knows he’s REALLY hurting her and REALLY shoudlnt’ of dated her to begin with. IT’s why Scott dating a teenager dosen’t make him a morally rephrenisvie monster: because he was genuinely intrested, didn’t use her sexually, and there are tangible consequences for his actions. Knives just dosen’t disappear neatly into the sunset so he can be with ramona. The rest of the series covers her emotoinal recovery from being with Scott, and how she very horribly handles it and that’s why this plotline works at all: she’s not some act one contrivance to be thrown away, sh’es a human being, and more than that a young woman who got hurt REALLY bad and got way too in over her head with someone who just..wasn’t the one fo rher no matter how much she can’t admit that.
We also get one of my faviorite sets of pages as Scott relfects on things and the sheer devistation on Knives face, which credit to a series that even at this early point loves it’s big bold facial expressions.. her’s being more subded just makes it sting MORE.
This bit to me is vital to keeping Scott sympathetic and to his character. We see he really does regret what happened, dosen’t know how to process it and genuinely feels awful. As I said instead of some exgerated face that would still hurt him.. her face is quiet, clearly unable to process this and clealry lost and hurt.. and that hurts more than any fuck your or sobs he was probably expecting. Just her clearly not getting WHY he’s doing this or why he hurt her, and he KNOWS why he just knows telling her the truth would hurt her even more. But.. as he thinks.. his thoughts move to something else.. and the WHY of why he did this.
He did it for Ramona. Wallace was as harsh as he was right: he needed a clean slate to actually give this relationship a shot and the smile comes off less as him being a calous dick whose just happy to move on, I mean he is a little, but more jus tsomeone READY to finally move on. He found the right person, he let the wrong one go if clumsily.. he has a future to look forward to and he can smile about that.
Granted he’s still his usual unteitonally callous self and his way of telling his friends he and knives broke up is to casually say so and say “dont’ worry you’ll meet my new girlfriend soon.” Their reaction.. is my own.
Look just because Scott is a nuanced douchebag dosne’t stop him from being a Douchebag. It just means he isn’t intolerable to watch and you actually care about him growing as a human being is all.
So with that out of the way, it’s date night and Ramona is coming over.. also Scott is considering calling her Ramy which no. I'm genuinely in favor of a pet name that’s just a variant on someone’s name but a bit cute, as it’s just the right level of obnoxious, but no, just no Scott. No. Ramona enters, meets Wallace again and sits down while Scott tries to shoo him out.. because turnabout is fair play bitch. They also see Ramona’s new hair as she dyes it something new for the first time, in this case a very lovely two tone, the purple from last volume but with a darker purple bellow it. I honestly wish she went for multiple colors in her hair again, but likely didn’t since the book was originally in black and white... which still dosent’ make sense as it would’ve been EASIER that way. Regardless Wallace makes himself scarce proving that he’s more than willing to be equal in terms of one of them spending the ngiht elsewhere. What a guy.
Ramona finds out a few things about Scott: That his apartment is VERY small, just one room with a bed, a cabinet, a small kitchen and a bathroom, which despite what scott says I REALLY dont’ count as another room. Just common sense. She also learns that he can COOK. Yeah while you’d expect Scott to just get a wad of “I did the ultimatum thing okay now gimme” money and buy dinner but no.. he made the whole thing himself from his own recipe. And once we cut to them eating on the floor.. turns out yeah he not only can cook but is REALLY good at it. She wishes there was a table which, small as the place is.. fair point. I mean at least get some tv trays. You have chairs. Or at least the easy chair. You can get nice padded folding chairs so you have a second chair guys. I know your poor but come on. Also Scott leanrs bread makes you fat. Good stuff. Also Scott freaks out when , while making out with Ramona in bed later, she mentions his hair’s getting kinda long and could use a cut... which turns out to be a thing for him. He isn’t an ass about it he just panics a bit because he’s partially convinced his last relationship’s nightmarish breakup was because of a bad haircut he got. As we’ll see next week, that’s a no but as someone whose a touch neroutic myself I get blaming a larger issue on something trivial.
So we then get to the next chapter where it’s KIM’S turn to have a dream.. and the only time we see someone else's dreams. Honestly.. I really would’ve liked if it was a recurring device, even have Ramona pop into other people’s Not used ALL the time but I could easily see it being used with Knives to convey her obsession with Scott and her pain or kim again to help move her plots along or Wallace because I want to know what’s going on in his head. It must be a maze of male gentalia and fine liquor the likes of which has never been seen. It’s scotts funeral as Simon killed him and Scott’s corpse wonders if she dreams about this a lot.
So we see her get ready and wake up her roomate Sarah whose a bitch. And as we’ll see in one of the backups, so’s the rest of her roommates. So drifting into work. Hollie is a character I really liked... the past tense will be explained later. And the first scene is probably why as her and Kim banter effortlessly, with Kim suggesting maybe she was a happy kid... only to admit quickly no she wasn’t, she was pretty withdrawn and then pretty angsty over someasshole who will be named Scott. “Your a holy terror kim, and i’m glad your on your side”> It’s a short scene but the kind this series excells at: just realistic, fun little exchanges bursting with character. I also GENUINELY wish we got more of this kind of thing, as only Knives really gets these kind of scenes to herself for the most part. There ARE scenes without Scott, but not enough like this that just give us as look into what his friends lives are like during the moments they aren’t putting up with his dumbassery or watching him engage in mortal combat. It’s why i’ve been hoping a spinoff will happen even though it likely won’t SOON. I’m sure O’Malley will return to this world some day, but between Snotgirl and Wicked World, which will come out when it’s ready but should be good.. he’s just really busy. But i’d love to see more of Kim.. or Wallace or Knives. The latter two are a no brainer: Knives is the tritagonist of the books, and it’d be intresting to see what she’d be like 5 years at the book, at the same age and stage in life as Scott. And with Wallace it’s because we really DON’T see his friend circle, life or what goes on with him. We hear him talk about a new boyfriend, who we don’t meet until near the end of the series, though you can see him in stage 3 of hte game if your curious, we see him with some random friends in volume 4, but we really don’t KNOW what hyjinks and lojinks wallace gets up to. He’s pretty isoalted from the rest of the main cast, something I hope an adaptation could fix as while realistic i’td be curious to see what his relationship with Kim or Steven would be like. Just food for thought.
Point is this was a good scene. But as is typical for Kim’s life just when she has some serenity her ex crashes back in. In this case Scott needs to rent some movies, kim works at a rental store and god teenage me really wanted a clerks style spinoff.. but enough spinoff talk. Scott asks kim to bororw them, of course and explains he’s training for his fight with Lucas.. which Kim reacts to finding out her second best friend is in a series of death matches.
She has understandable questions such as how the hell doe she know that and is he stalking Lucas and just hoping he’s an ex.. which let’s face it would be a very scott move. But nope Wallace told him, likely learning in an interview he dated Ramona or is coming for scott because he knows everything. We also get one of my faviorite exchanges when Kim wonders why Wallace and Scott are roomates.. a valid question he deflects by saying i’ts a long story.
Also yeah, as much as casting Micheal Cera backfired for the movie.. that panel there proves there wasn’t another choice at the time. When you want a loveable, somewhat douchey, but also somewhat innocent and oblivious slacker.. who you gonna call. Also before we move on.. Kim.. how are you this suprised. You were there for the fight with Matthew. And Ramona giving out the exposition on why he’s there.. and you even did that whole weird space channel 5 thing no one ever did agian and to this day I will never understand what O’Malley was going for and only know the refrence by hearing that’s what it was. Point is you shouldn’t be this suprised. Anyways we next cut to Ramona and Stacey, as Ramona enters her workplace, second cup, and they talk and Scott’s spider sense goes off...
I mean it’s just a bad feeling but still.. weird. WE’ll get back to that later. Scott is in the middle of his training.. and I love the mentor side of Wallace and feel it didn’t get used enough as the series went on. As said before he cares about Scott, so he serves as his Shounen Mentor and a great one: he’s stern and makes Scott work, but he also gets his student and what Scott needs to work. I just wish he’d taught Scott some actual combat, but as we see Wallace’s combat skills boil down to yelling useless info from the sidelines.. I mean he can be useful, we’ll see that next week, it’s just he’s not an action guy. But spirtually he’s the guy scott needs to kick his ass into shape. That being said his “training” consists of watching Lucas’ movies, playing tony hawk and when Scott wants to play more Tony Hawk, having Scott do pushups while Wallace plays Tony Hawk. Before we turn... there is an elephant in the room I just gotta shoo out: Lucas.. is easily the worst setup of the 6 exes. Patel SEEMINGLY comes out of nowhere but his letter and email hint SOMETHING is coming up, and his flashy dynamic entry intro is damn cool and is what turns the series on it’s head, from an indie comic about a guy getting it together.. to that but with huge shonen dustups with epic visuals. Todd is introduced masterfully here, and is a presence from the start of volume 3 as a result, Roxie gets a slight tease in the free comic book day issue, and her not attacking for two months not only sets up tension but allowed for a red herring.. im’ not only hiding that the fourth ex is a she because anyone whose seen the movie or played the game knows the fourth ex is a woman. The cat’s out of the bag, no sense hiding it. The Kentangis show up pretty early on and Gideon is hinted at and built up, as this towering, mysterious figure, his relationship with Ramona, who he is, why he set up the league, and just how fucking strong he is is all obscured, with his only four apperances simply teasing the big final showdown and giving him that much more mysitque.
Lucas.. is just sorta intorduced like “Hey I gotta fight this guy”. There’s just.. nothing. Scott’s just gotta fight him because he’s next up and Wallace knows that because plot convience. It’s VERY lackluster given what comes before.. and frankly while I like Lucas, he’s the weakest plot and character wise. HE’s not even really EVIL, just a sellout and is more doing this because he has to I guess, and likely because of stuff we find out in Book 6 but sssssshhhhh. We’ll get more into that when the fight happens but it’s one of the books weakest points. The evil ex.. just feels like an afterthrought again despite there being no reason to. Thankfully this would never happen again as I said, but it dosen’t make this any less frustrating.
So we cut to Sex Bomb-Omb practice, and after that we get more tease for Clash at Demonhead. And Stephen.. is cool with them and entirely happy one of them made it, while Scott is understandably pisssed off about it and not happy one of his best friends is you know, promoting the band of his ex who broke his heart and as we’ll get more into next time, said rising career is what tore them apart. So yeah Stephen’s a dickhead, and I was wrong last time that he got better. He really.. dosen’t. He gets less CREEPY.. but out of the main 6 characters he’s the weakest: he dosen’t have much of an arc, does some very questionable shit in the second half, and his being around means we have to suffer through Julie. I’ll tear into him more on a case by case basis but for once Scott’s not overreacting. While Kim does nothing she also has no idea just HOW bad things were and Scott won’t tell her. Stephen was there the whole fucking time. He just saw Scott’s rebound with a teenager. He knows he was kind of messed up after this. Dosen’t justfiy knives but still he looses the moral high ground he tries to have at times.
So while Scott shops a song for Ramona to her, Knives calls Scott’s place clearly setting up another suprise apperance. Wallace.. figures out what sh’es doing quick and simply gives her a stern “You have to go” And to me it’s not him being a dick.. he’s both trying to save her from seeing Scott with Ramona and fucking her up worse... and is looking out for her. She needs to move on and moving up to stalking Scott’s not going to help that. Scott dosen’t WANT her anymore, and while he handled it bad, Wallace gets she needs to see that. Granted he could’ve you know explained it to her and tried talking, but as i’ve said he’s not a perfect person and he was also on a time table to get her out of there in case Scott you know, showed up with his new girlfriend and made things a billion times worse. And the two are indeed headed to his place to watch one of Lucas’ movies, and part of that weak setup is that Ramona.. just has no connection with him. It was high school. Scott also pretends he dosent’ remember his. You are a lying liar sir stop that. So they watch the film together hanging out, and it’s.. really bad. The good one was rented out. I miss rental stores.. a magical time. I mean i’ts better now, streaming means 80% of movies are avaliable if you have a bunch of services and even if you just have netflix or hulu or hbo max, you still get a pretty decent selection each month. Plus digital rentals are super easy. Do miss redbox though. I mean it’s still there I’m just warry of something that relies so heavily on touching things in a state with a lot of trump morons. You CAN get Covid twice and I don’t wanna. Also we get some dated Dialouge as Scott commenting on Lucas being hot, he is good taste Scott, is given a “good job convincing me your not gay”. He and ramona end up having sex though so .. yay? I dunno. The series has a really weird thing about not getting bisexuals exist and as someone whose bi, and really against bi errasure it bothers me, it bothers me a lot. Though given O’Malley apparently has not only far more queer rep in snotgirl but a bisexual lead, he’s clearly learned so i’m not going to drag him too hard on this. It was the early 2000′s. People were pretty damn stupid about this. Creators have gottten MUCH more important issues much worse.
So the next morning, Scott gets a call from his well meaning but ditzy mom, and reacts like you’d expect. His parents are in Europe to keep them out of the action and what not. Though apparently according to the last book his mom did read volume 3 at least. Or Wallace told her about the relevant bit. You make the call.
So i’ts Ramona’s turn to meet Sex Bomb-Omb. The group hang out and discuss Gordon Downie.
Look I don’t know indie bands. I have no idea who the tragically hip are I just know the name is really hipstery. We also get the recipe for Vegan Shepards Pie. None of them are vegan they just wanted to try it and I.. really want to make this some time. Just to see if it’s any good. But yeah it’s in general a fun casual scene, as Kim reveals she and Scott dated, just to break the tension, and Scott tries out Rammy but quickly backpedals. Just fun slice of life stuff. Oh and Knives is watching them from the window and takes Scott dating someone else as well as you’d expect.
So she gets some hair bleach to do some highlights and calls her friend Tamara over. We met her last volume as she dragged her along to the show, but it’s here we really get to know what she’s like.. i.e. the sane one in the duo, rightfully pointing out Scott’s not that great. Also Knive’s points out ramona’s “fat”, which is thankfully portrayed as petty sniping as while Ramona does have some curves it’s you know.. not remotely a bad thing and the kind of thing a teenage girl would harp on. Still she’s just in STEPS from this happening.
youtube
But yeah.. it’s clear here Knives has some underlying issues to address and really needs therapy not to go after her ex’s current girlfriend with knives. I mean it’s in the name but still. Then again volume 4 has her dad going around with a katana or something like it wanting to murder her daughter’s older ex boyfriend he dosen’t realize is ex so it’s clear her whole FAMILY needs some therapy. But this does round her out and show there’s more to her.. a pretty violent and obessive side sure, but it shows she wasn’t just some one dimensional ego boost for scott but a person. One whose just as flawed as the rest of the cast.. but more sympatheic because they’ve all got about 6 or 7 years on her and at this age that’s a lifetime. And while Scott DID set this off by dating her which was objecitvely a bad idea... the rest of this isn’t remotely on him. He handled things BAD.... but all he wanted was for both of them to move on. Knives.. simply can’t admit Scott is not a nice person, was probably two timing her as Tamara points out, which as we know he 100% was, and is not some perfect guy she can’t replace: like Knives.. he’s just a person with faults and she’s too blind to see that.
So before we can get to the crazy stalker ninja fight, let’s instead get to Scott and Ramona hanging out where we meet Gideon, Ramona’s Cat who i’ll call Cat Gideon, both because I love steven unvierse and because it’s less confusing. This is a pretty slight scene as Ramona admits not a lot happened with Lucas and Scott’s apartment is a hole.. which yeah, yeah it is. Also she DEFINTLY dind’t cheat on him with any cocky pretty boys. Which would come off worse if it wasn’t for the pact Ramona was clearly doing it out of regret and Scott just liked like 50 pages ago about rembering his exes when one of them is his second best friend.. which neither would admit but you know it’s true. Stephen is third where he belongs.
So next morning it’s fight time, and Scott is glad wallace is going with him. It’s awkard going to fights alone. Which leaves me to wonder if before this comic Scott just.. fought random guys letterkenny style. Like they’d call up, schedule it and then he and one or more of his friends would go beat up a guy. It’s just.. hilarious knowing that this kind of thing is common in canda minus the ki attacks , flash effects, wizards, vegan psycics, ninjas, and roboticists. But damn I now want a scott pilgrimized letterkenny now more than ever. You know you do too don’t deny it. I”d love to see the hard right jay fight but iwth a loud “KO!” when he gets his ass knocked out. Also Casa Loma is a very real, very cool Toronto location, as I never realized as a kid, to the point that the lucas fight was filmed there for the movie.
So Scott approaches Lucas a bit star struck and upon finding out scott is.. punches him out as seen in the header image and throws him into a tower. When Scott regains conciousness, Kim and Neil have arrived and Lucas calls a time out. And it’s here we get to, while being the weakest of the 7, why I like Lucas.. he’s actually a pretty nice guy. At WORST he sold out. But the two have a pretty nice conversation over ritz and baby carrots, with it turning out, unsuprisingly Ramona did cheat on him with a cocky pretty boy, and while like Ramona he’s clearly moved on, it still hurts a bit and understandably so. He also warns scott while she might seem nice i’ts an act.
I mean it isn’t ALL an act, but she does have a tedency to put up walls and act pretty badly as we’re slowly finding out.. though given Scott does the exact same it only means.. she’s human. She’s not MUCH higher above him in terms of morality and this is where we get our first peaks into the fact the series isn’t just about Scott’s development but hers. But it’s understandably absent from volumes 1 and 2 since we need to know her first, and this volume is about getting to know her a bit and get a feel for who she is, something I ddin’t really get a grip on as a teen, but do now. We see more of who she is good and bad as the walls go down. She’s more SURFACE LEVEL functional than scott, but beneath it has a lot of the same exact issues. Lucas and Scott continue to GENUINELY bond, as Scott genuinely thinks the guy is talented and Lucas want’s an Oscar this year.. maybe not for the current film which is a romantic comedy with a teen star but hey, stars have done far worse in their Oscar years. I mean at least he’s not making a comedy about himself in a fat suit domestically abusing himself in a wig while he also plays an asian sterotype. He explains he almost didn’t get into the league but felt too important to ramona’s past.. plus he looks cool. Plus they let Patel in despite barely being in a relationship with her and being kind of a tool so they kinda had to let the handsome affiable movie star in. Scott wonders “wait league” and Lucas is understandably frustrated to find out Patel just sent a letter Scott didn’t read.. and at Matthew let’s be clear. I mean.. Gideon has to have known Scott wouldn’t read that since he’s been in his head. We’ll get to that in part 6. Point is they formed a league, hence why their organized enough to come after him like this and Scott understandably glares at Wallace for you know, having him play tony hawk and watch movies yet missing the fucking obvious clue they were all working together and they were only coming at him one at a time by choice.
Lucas offers to just.. take a bribe and SAY Scott beat him, Scott calls him a sellout jokingly and Lucas proves that while not AS bad as the rest of the League, he’s still a dick by telling him to kiss ramona’s sweet ass goodbye pilgrim. Okay either he’s seen her since high school or he’s fondly remembering a high schooler’s ass. Neither one is nice to think about. But Scott gets out of his ass beating by pointing out a ramp, real thing too used for the movie, and asking him to skate down it. Lucas says i’ts impossible, and Scott just whistles. So Lucas tries skating the impossible and dies via velocity. Yes really. Scott collects his change and gets a gift, a mytryil skateboard he.. can’t use because he dosen’t have a proficency for it and bemoans not picking it up in 5th grade. Also he didn’t get his autograph. He does get some coins though so neat. Yeah I mentioend Lucas was the least of the exes and I stand by it: He’s an intresting character, not a GREAT person but clearly a charming and nice enough guy who likely offered the bribe not because he’sd a sell out but because he genuinely liked scott, and is easily the best adjusted of the exes. But obviously a near non existant setup and a really hilarious and unsastifying finish just.. don’t really feel sastsifying. I mean i’t slampshaded, but after all the build up of her having 7 evil exes, the next one is just..filler. Not BAD, but not really anything special and giving Scott a an early pokemon victory, but unlike ash having done nothing to really DESERVE it. Thankfully both adaptations so far VASTLY improved on this. While Lucas is still affiable in the movie he’s also smarmy, if on better terms with Ramona, saying “he seems nice” after the tower throw and throwing in some stunt doubles. His fight goes from one of the least satisfying and weakst of the series, to easily one of the best of the movie. We’ll talk about that more there but obvious Chris Evans version is far superior, keeping the good traits while giving us an intresting fight.. and still keeping the skateboard death because it’s fucking hilarious and the movie improves on THAT too by having scott give flat wows as he slowly dies. The game likewise keeps teh skateboard death, if shortening it, and the skateboard, and while not changing his apperance does make him a hell of a tough boss. Took three tries and some online grinding to take him out. Still a hell of a fight. Point is while I genuinely like Lucas story wise.. this just dosen’t work for me and is pretty damn weak, even if it gives us some godo character insight we could’ve got that, and a fight and still had the finish we did.
That being said.. we DO get a fight instead, likely why the Lucas fight was so truncated. Next chapter and that evening or the next day or whatever, we pan over the real life tornto refrence library. It is a VERY nice touch thatt the comic and it’s adpations use either real places in toronto or reasonable subsittues. While not canadian myself I love the place and hope to visit Tornoto some day when the world isn’t a living nightmare and it’s really nice that like New York for Marvel, Brian Lee O malley really makes the city feel integral to the comic, like it’s own character. But Knives is ominously perched above. At second cup Scott is horrified to find Julie. Seconded. Julie takes the moment to give out to scott about him dating Ramona despite telling him no. Okay...
Yeah as you can probably guess I don’t like Julie. She’s not a good character. The movie did her better, with the bleeping gag and aubrey plaza’s performance, but in the comic.. she’s just the worst. She sucks bad. If she were an ice cream flavor she’d be pralines and dick. While she’s fine on OCCASION, and actually works in the next volume, outside of that she just gets more unplesant, more unlikeable, more bitchy, more unfathomabbly assholish every. damn. volume. I”ll give out about that a bit then too but I have to put up with her for the entire damn comic. Now her being bitchy to Scott is fair to a point: Scott is a mess, and she’s loyal to Envy in the breakup, and Scott’s own friends drag him on a daily basis. The problems are that she’s like that to EVERYONE, even Knives who isn’t about to stab her much as i’d like that. She’s unberable to Stephen whose tolerance for her is unfathomable, though the ending bits of volume 6 show maybe he just has terrble taste. She’s just a throughly unplesant, social climbing bitch who thinks she’s better than everyone. And it sticks out badly against the main cast; Scott is very bad with women and relating to people, but is also nice, charming and most of the damage he does is not intetional. Ramona puts up walls to keep others out but is also a responsible adult and often cuts through Scott, and at times others, internal bullshit. Wallace is an alcholic, but still a very responsible, very loveable guy who clearly cares about scott and supports him finacially and emotionally. Kim is VERY emotionally distant, very misntrhopic.. but also a good person who as we see as the series goes, has an inner light to her and often drags on Scott because she’s been putting up with his shit the longest and WANTS him to be better. Knives is an obessive and violent stalker.. who was also deeply hurt by an older man, dosen’t GET that her realtionship with scott was wrong and uneven, and is clearly not emtoinallyr eady for the deep feelings she’s having. And Stephen.. well he’s a talented guitarist but also enables scott and julie. Especially him enabling Julie.
Point is their all pretty well rounded, llikeable characters with flaws. Julie.. is just an ass. And this scene demonstrates that with flying colors. While Scott does ignore her because he’s too worried about his sister and girlfriend becoming friends, understandably given Stacey knows all his dark secrets, Julie spends two pages giving out and treating scott like some bad guy for persuing Ramona against her orders. And i’m going to break down why.. this dosen’t work.. on any level for her. 1) Ramona is not Julie’s property. She’s a big girl with her own free will. They aren’t even remotely close: Julie met her only barely before Scott, and given the dream thing probably not even that. And you could say Julie is just looking out for her... she dosen’t know Ramona well enough to KNOW if Ramona is still smarting over Gideon. She probably was.. but she readily, once the awkwardness passed, went out with scott and dove right into the relationship. While there’s still some scars as we’ll see.. she CHOOSE to move on and that’s her choice. If she wasn’t ready, she woudl’ve turned him down or broke it off by now realizing it was a mistake. 2) Scott has no reason to listen to her. She hates his ass, somewhat justifably but still, she hates him and has been against him since fucking colllege. She took his exes side in the breakup despite Envy still being partly in the wrong but paints him as some abusive dickhead and not just an insesntive dickhead. To him he’s just some villian she needs to reign in for her cool friend who wants nothing to do with her and grows to justifably hate her over time. Scott and Julie TOLERATE each other. They are not friend,s they do not like each other and never will. They are around each other because of Stephen. That is it. If Kim , Wallace or Stephen had asked, or at least made him wait for kinves. he probablyw ould’ve or at least considered it since while they take the piss out of him, they genuinely care about him and actually have shown they care about something other than themselves! Speaking of which the cou de gras 3) She’s a selifsh bitch: She is NEVER not in any volume seen as out for anyone but herself, and thus scott has no reason to trust her judgement. She berates Stephen, him and anyone who will listen, is only so loyal to envy because she’s famous, and as I said treats EVERYONE like dogshit. And given Scott is still a very flawed guy.. it takes a LOT for him to be so right and he runs out screaming when Julie mentions her.
So back at the library, Ramona brought Stacey along because the place is a maze. Scott calls Stephen and calls julie evil.. which given the last two paragrahs. Yeah. She is. She really is. But that goes nowhere as he dosen’t have Stacey’s number. He also thinks Julie was responsible for this which while she’s very much not.. would it REALLY be that suprising that if Julie were there she would’ve introdcued the two and set up their little hangout just to piss scott off? God I’m so sick of talking about her.
So the two after dropping off Ramona’s package decide to hang out a bit.. not long as Ramona’s got shit to do, but hey I agree with her logic i’m curious about this palce too. But before they can go up an elevator Ramona spots incoming.. and thus we get the fight of the volume. Though given the next one has two climatctic fights and one or two before that, they easily could’ve had both.. this is still the highlight of the volume. So Ramona snaps off a railing and before Stacey can give out about that she finds out WHY as Knives attacks with a pair of sais. And O’Malley did his homework as while you’d THINK it was just another dumb white person mistake.. O’Malley is asian, thoughw ether he’s candaian korean or canadian chineses, as his last name is korean but he has a large chinese cast in this very comic that might come from experince, I do not know and if you do know tell me. I’d like to refer to him properly as I don’t LIKE lumping all asian cultures into one basket. But not only that he did his home work, as Sai’s, while popularized in Okinawa Japan, were also used in other countries. I bring this up since I assumed it was just a simple mistake even knowing Brian was mixed-race, and was plesantly suprised to fine that know, I was the moron. And i’m fine with admitting that.
So we get a damn good fight.. and Knives figures out Scott WAS cheating on her. Granted she assumes so due to seeing Ramona at the refrence Library, before he actually cheated and clearly blames Ramona for it, but still, it fucking hurts. Plus while her attacking Ramona, who initally assumes she’s gideon’s doing, which.. yeah sending a teenage assasian just to mess with her head does sound like him. So while Stacey does complain “ramona you can’t just tear out art objects” to which I say... yeah high, Stacey? NOT THE POINT RIGHT NOW SCOTT’S EX IS TRYING TO KILL HER. SHE’S DEFENDING HERSELF. So we get one hell of a fight. It not only shows off that Ramona is one hell of a fighter herself, as is knives, but just how immature knives is, resorting to constnat fat jokes and taunts showing just how immature she is.. and unlike volume one where it was endearing and we just saw how sweet she was here it just comes off as mean, bitter, and uncomfortable. But again part of the series biggest charm is the main cast are all well fleshed out and throughly human. She’s doint this because she dosen’t know better and was raised in a house where, again as volume 4 will bear out, finding out her dad is going after scott with a samurai sword just warrants a “dad’s are so weird aren’t they” my point is her frame of refrence is a mite skewed. Plus this is a world where everyone but Stacey just calmly accepts big shonen fights break out, so it’s not that unsuaul to want to settle things with a fight and while i’ve joked about her killing Ramona we genuinely don’t know that was the goal> Could’ve been, easily given murder is peachy in this setting and just leads to a respawn according to O’Malley and would’ve just sent ramona back to her apartment. But I genuinely don’t think she has it in her to do it and while she could’ve planend to, she never would’ve. Plus Ramona easily leads the fight as while Knives uses hit and run tactics and tries make her follow.. Ramona is more annoyed than anything as she has shit to do. Knives only gets one hit in and while i’ts a pretty nasty scratch on the cheek, if thankfully not scarring.. Ramona shrugs it off when she brags about it and easily takes knives down with a potted tree. Knives runs and while she tells herself it’s to fight another day.. its really because her opponent was WAY stronger and way more ready for something like this than she probably planned on. She did defintely want a fight, she just wasn’t prepared to be outmatched so handily. It’s also a nice parallel to last book’s fight: Like with Scott and Matthew, while the fight SEEMS pretty even, in reality our hero/heroine was alwasy teh one in control and easily took care of the less experinced and less ready upstart, who likely wasn’t expecting a fair fight much less to loose.
So Ramona and Stacey wisely get out while Stacey explains Knives is indeed Scott’s ex, though is unaware of the cheating thing. Speaking of Scott he’s playing sonic and knuckles, and in fact kept wallace on the line before just to get advice because of course he did hence why stacey didn’t get through to him, but gets a call... from Envy.
This is easily the second best sequence in the boook, which was lovingly and wonderfully adapted to film and as a result I cannot read it without hearing Brie Larson’s voice for Envy , a nice mixture of seduction and condescension. It’s CLEARLY painful fo rhim, and we do get some things established as Envy toys with him, that it’s been about a year and that she left him for a cocky pretty boy, familiar.. and while Scott claims to not know what he looks like.. given Todd is clearly on her band cover... it’s not exactly hard to put two and two together. So after some awkard catchup and Scott telling her about ramona against his will, we get to the reason she’s here with Scott understanndbly being supscious and calling her a user.. which while Envy denys.. she ends up admitting to. She’s coming to town as estalbished and her opening act backed out, and since Scott has a band, and one that 2/3 of which she knows, she wants them to open for her. Scott naturally isn’t too intrested and thinks it’s just pity. The sequence. is masterful, using a watchmen style 9 by 9 panel layout and intercutting scott’s pained reactions and clear lack of comfort with flashes of envy on her side.. never showing her proper, but showing his memories or what he’s seen in magazines. It’s really striking and really sells the sheer discomfort Scott’s going through. So soon after Wallace gets home.. and finds Scott, drained and miserable on the floor, not even responsive. And this really is the scene that shows me that Wallace cares for the guy and cements that asshole he may be, he loves his buddy. He goes through possible scenarios that fit scott: Food poisoning, finding out Wallace saved over his final fantasy save (though he rules it out as last time that happened he was crying), that ramona dumped him.. before Scott let’s out a pathetic and miserable “Ennnnnvvv”. Wallace , who was at ground zero for that relationship as we’ll find out, realizes this and lets out a little shit, unsure how to help and pissed off at that bitch for once again hurting him like this. As I said it shows how Wallace knows scott in and out and loves him dearly.. and how he knwos about this paticuarly heartbreak better than anyone but Scott and Envy themselves. IT’s just a really tearjerking scene, as we get a sense of WHY scott spiraled into an ego boost of a relationship: His last one REALLY tore him in half, and he’s still not completely healed from the emtional bisection.
So Scott gets more bad news next chapter as Stacey tells him about the fight and he’s worried he’s going to loose ramona on top of this. I mean he desrves it.. .but it’s clear she’s the best thing to happen to him after a really rough year of denial and poor decisionss and loosing her will likely only make him WORSE. He also breaks the bad news, to him at least to the band about the gig. Stephen, being kind of a dick who while understandbly excited about a big gig fails to see his friend REALLY isn’t happy about this nor remembers you know, that the person offering this tore his heart out indiana jones style and while they should take the gig despite the risks, it’s too big an opportunity not to, he should be fucking senstive about this. Kim however... has a suprising and heartbreaking reactoin to this. Which is spread over a few panels but i’m gonna string into one image for convince sake.
Just.. DAMN. I honeslty missed this both as a teenager and as an adult when I read through the books last time but holy shit is this a heartbreaking little moment, even more with the development she gets in later books. Keep in mind, over two books so far, Kim.. really hasn’t shown a lot of emtion. The most upset she’s gotten was getting a bit pissed about another a girl drummer. The only other time we’ve seen her sad was at 17 when Scott left. Her only emotions that we could see were angry and surly. But here? She’s genuinely upset and we see her walls break down for the very first time.. and it’s with the clear indication she NEVER really got over Scott. She never got proper closure and while she hasn’t let it so.. it’s been VERY clear she's been grossly uncomfortable with how he just likes to brush off their history, something that very clearly still bothers her and understandably so: 6 years , while a lot of time, still really isn’t long enough to just .. FORGET your first boyfriend , how he made you feel or the fact he took your virginity and you took his. Stuff like that sticks with you.. I’m ony assuming on the virginity thing but my point remains: To Scott it’s SEEMINGLY nothing, when really he’s probably just trying to brush it off because he dosen’t like dealing with things and given how Kim is wrongly assumed she can’t feel pain. I mean to anyone else i’d be a fair assumption and even i’m not convinced if she touched a hot stove she’d burn, but that’s phsysical this is emotional. DIffrent playing fields. Point is Scott’s kind of a dick and not having ANY closure for anything, Kim is still smarting from him leaving as much as Scott is smarting from Envy dumping him. And it somehow gets MORE painful.... which should’ve been the tagline for Bojack Horseman now I think about it but yeah: her line is what cuts me up the most “I saw her on the cover of Now. She’s pretty”. It’s a little line, it’s easy to see why I missed it .. but the subtext really stings. It’s that despite being VERY pretty, I had a crush on her as a kid and I still do now.. Kim just can’t help but compare herself to someone whose now a glamrous rock star. Their equally attractive but all Kim can see is ANOTHER person who Scott cared about more than her. Which seems petty but again he just.. abnadoned her. His moving wasn’t his choice but his not telling her as was framed earlier sure as hell was. And then just.. look at the next people he dates: A glamorous rock star (She wasn’t at the time but that’s for next week), a much younger girl who can’t possible challenge him, and an ultra cool american. To her.. it must feel like he just looks right through her to every other person intersted in him and never even consdered her as a person anymore. I mean.. jesus christ that hurts.. and makes me hate Stephen more since you know he dosen’t notice any of this.. though at least unlike with Scott it’s a bit more understandable because Kim’s so unflappable and he’s already ignoring very obvious and transparent emotional pain why shouldn’t this be any diffrent. So yeah no one’s happy about this, and that ends up including Stephen as he’s so insecure about his band’s talent he’s pretty sure they suck when their probably at least adaquate.
So while Scott dosen’t say anything, it’s clear he’s at least consdiering the offer as when we next see him he and ramona are heading to Envy’s show. And honestly it’s just a really sweet scene as Ramona asks about envy and the two banter and hold hands. A really nice palletee clensar since hte last few pages were like I was the one lucas socked in the gut. Also she assures him she dosen’t hate him, and asks about how the breakup happened, turning down any offers to hear the good times. It was new years eve one year ago, and he mentions it was over her leaving to meet some guy named Todd.. and Ramona finds the story familiar but brushes off Scott wondering if her todd and Envy’s todd wer ethe same guy as a douchey joke. When prying about what happened otherwise, Scott admits it was all a blur.. Ramona isn’t ahppy with the answer.. but it’s nto like it’s that unresonable: he was in deep with Envy, and the breakup was damn bad to the point it took a year for him to recover and end up in the relationship he is now and the one before this was clearly a cry for help. It also helps reinfroce just how much Wallace was there for him and probably WHY Wallace hates Envy so much. They probably live together simply because Scott needed a place after college, was in zero condition to get a job or do anything given his zombie like state.. and Wallace just had him move into his bed, platonically and into his place. It’s probably why while Wallace will complain ocasoinally he isn’t that on scott to find a job. He dosen’t need a paying roomate, they do fine just on his sallary and he has a steady, secure job in some sort of calling office, probably working in medical stuff like my mom. He needs his friend to be safe and happy, then he can get on his ass about being functional, as he is in present day. If nothing else this volume made me realize just how good a person Wallace is. The one thing he CAN remember, to Ramona’s disbelif is a restraunt opening up, the job story he hinted at last volume: basically it was a fancy tex mex place called, and this is one of the best restraunt naems in the history of fiction brace yourself: The Gilded Palace of Flying Burritos. Naturally, as would I as I love tex mex and that name, Scott loved the place, ate there most of the week and like me with some places I liked waited impatietly to get a job. He did and they were even super generous as the food was FREE. Which is a euphoric feeling I relate to, though I also liked any discounts I got. seriously when I worked at Bagel and Bagel a good chunk of my paycheck was eating there for dirt cheap every shift. I miss that place so much. Like even after I left there I still like a good bagel sandwitch. And it wasn’t covid or anything it was just low staffed and slowly coming apart due to a lack of a solid manager after Crystal, the manager who hired me, transfered to a store closer to her home, which I do not blame her for.
Point is I get it even if Ramona thinks this is all made up. Anyways at Lee’s Place, based on the real life Leo’s place, everyone’s gussied up: Steven got an awful haircut and Kim...
But no time to dwell on how great kim’s..everything is.. who DID Neil bring to the concert?
While Kim is VERY much enjoying this, everyone else is a bit freaked with Ramona getting assurance her and Scott dated breifly, with Kim quipping her and neil will probably date even breiflyer, and Stephen.. freaking out, wondering if she seduced him, and asking if they should take him out back and kick his ass..
Just..... that’s a lot of douche to unpack and this review has been VERY long and suprisingly hard already.. but fuck it, we don’t have much left to go let’s do this. Okay one did she seduce him.. I mean I GUESS, but really let’s be clear here: Neil is a horny, lonely, monosolobic 19 year old who lives with his sister’s college friend and whose life revovles around said guys band. Knives is adorable. She likely barely had to flirt with him to get him to say yes .As someone who was a lonely 19 year old doofus, I guarantee no matter the red flags I probably woudl’ve said yes provided she was 18 instead of 17, despite the abudant red flags such as neil vaugely looking like scott, neil being the one single man within scott’s circle to get her way back in, as Knives hasn’t realized she’s bi yet or given how much she looked up to Kim, she probably WOULD’VE gone for it. As would any sane person, which neither knives nor I entirley are. So she didnt’ so much seduce him as offer him a girlfriend he didn’t have and him being too intrested in having a sweet, caring girl on his arm to see the giant army of adrestian soldiers needed to carry all the red flags this presents.
And as for “do we need to kick his ass. “ Stephen.. did you kick SCOTT’S ass? No, you fucking abetted him and only stepped in for the good girl thing. You did NOTHING to stop his relationship with knives or tell him he was screwing up or look out for that girl’s well being. This will bite him in the ass even harder in volume 5, but even now it just makes him look REALLY fucking bad that, even if he probably dosen’t mean it, that’s at all on the table. Also.. Neil, unlike scott is doing slightly less wrong. While he is 20 to her 17, three years.. it’s HALF of what Scott and her’s age diffrence is, and far more equal in power structure. It’s still not.. GREAT, but my point is you did NOTHING when Scott did this, for far flimiser and less forgiavble reasons.. but when NEIL, whose been nothing but weirdly loyal to you dates her, you want to kick someone’s ass. I mean yes he’s being stupid: in a clear role reversal of the Scott and Knives situation, it’s obvious just from her expression that KNVIES is the one in control here, and the one using someone to ease her own pain. Granted it’s wrong, if not as wrong as Scott should techincally know better and Knives very clearly dosen’t, as well as get into a show of her faviorite band. Is what she’s doing wrong.. yeah... while she can’t see it again it’s what Scott did just not QUITE as fucked up due to not being AS embalanced. Should neil probably be dating her after scott did ? No. But should you be threatning him and not scott for you know, setting all this in motion? No. Jesus christ you suck Steven.
Thankfully while Scott presumibly calms Stephen down, Kim spots Hollie and her roomate Joseph, who will be suprisingly important. He’s very gay, very quite, very bearded and is only hear because the bass player is hot and when prodded on it....
Well said. Also I read that with John Heder’s voice fo rsome reason.. don’t know why, his career ended as quickly as it began because he REALLY did not pick his films well. He saw that he was going to be in a film with David Spade and Rob Schinder and didn’t fire his agent for suggesting it. Meanwhile Scott and Ramona run into Sandra and Monique, Scott’s old classmates who just sorta.. show up every so oftne, often backing up Julie because every Alpha Bitch needs a posse. As Boscha has proven once you loose your posse you loose your bitchy powers. They also ask if Scott and Ramona are an item which leads to a fantagious visual gag.
Also Stephen awkardly talks to the new couple, about how much Knives loves the band, and because why start reading the room now just sorta.. CASUALLY slips in the fact he knows her is because she and scott dated.
Granted Knives action this book really EARNED her that curveball.. but still, it’s transparently clear she’s both not over Scott and Neil’s a placebo, and that she loves the band... how the fuck did you get through college, much less get two loyalish friends Steve.
Kim tries to hide when she runs into Sarah whose with.. someon O Malley does not know, literally captioning it “I don’t know htis girl”. Fucking love that gag even if SOMEHOW kim is the roomate they all hate. Despite hte fact as the side story will bare out, her roommates are all pretty obnoxious, so i’ts probably because she’s the only sane person in that group and their VERY lucky kim just dind’t set the place on fire on her way out and let god do what he should’ve a long time ago. Also we meet Lynette, the band’s drummer who smokes “She must be evil” “Still hot though”... both accurate. Also Luke wilson is there.. no really. Just holy shit that’s awesome. Okay so with all of that out of the way, it’s time for the show. So after a full volume’s build up , and a really cool build up in the page before we finally properly meet clash at the demonhead, and miss envy adams.
Heck of a reveal and not the only one as ramona realized what the audience probably already guessed....
Dun dun dun! And since I don’t like leaving a cliffhanger dangling lest I have to... we’ll be getting to this next week.. what you thought i’d say right now or tommorow? This was a lot. But no i’m not leaving you too long. Next week, Evil Ex Crossover! Ramona and Wallace become BFF’s! We learn what the deal with Scott and Envy is! Scott faces the Ken to his Ryu! And Wallace gets a boyfriend. All this and more next week. for now...
Final Thoughts: This one.. was a VERY rough one to review and it ties back to this volume’s biggest problem: it is not paced very well. Like the series as a whole it has a pretty easy going, slice of life pace. The only ones without this kind of easy pacing are 3 and 6, and even 3 has some slice of life bits, their just both more focused due to the events going on. This one... well....
Pretty much. While this one has very important stuff going on, Scott and ramona getting closer, ramona getting more fleshed out, Wallace showing how deep his character is, Kim also getting fleshed out quite a bit, Knives showing off her crazy side, setting up the next volume, the second ex fight.. it’s all just kinda.. jumbled together. It’s not really until the knives fight onward the book takes on some really solid pacing and really gets going.It’s not a BAD book: ther’es some REALLY good character stuff as I dug into.. but the pacing is just really loose and without the Evil Ex fight as an anchor and with ramona and scott just sorta.. getting to know one another, in both biblical and non biblical senses, it dosen’t have either of the series main narrative thrusts. Even the knvies subplot really amoutns to nothing for now, as Ramona dosen’t find out Scott’s a cheater, and only distrusts knives now. That’s about it. It does improve on book one in characterization, with eveyrone being MUCH cleearer in terms of who they are and settling into their iconic selves nicely. Wallace’s more selfless and protective side pops up, Ramona starts to show mroe of her personality good and bad, Scott’s better traits are mixed a bit mor eeven with the douche ones, Knive’s far more unstable and violet stalker side emerges, and Stephen.. well fuck him, point is things are coming together.. but O’Malley still isn’t quite at peak power yet. Not bad and still worth a read like last time, just a bit uneeven is all. That being said... if you want O’Malley at his peak.. well then come back next week. Until then i’ll be doing my usual buisness of reviewing birds, refrencing simpsons and letterkenny, and putting my eyes back in after kim’s look up there. For now the sun’s setting and i’m out of here.

The Missing Piece - Ch 10
Worries 🌸
gang! au / ceo! au
characters: dabi x f. oc, lov
status: ongoing
read on ao3 here.
I spend hours turning in bed, replaying Dabi's words to me earlier.
He cares about me.
Right?
That's the only way I could interpret what happened. He got angry on my behalf, even though he didn't look it.
My cheeks redden as I recall how warm he was to hold, despite most certainly being the most awkward hugger I've ever met. I wrap my arms around myself, trying to remember what it was like.
It wasn't a short hug...but I wish it was longer.
Snap out of it, I tell myself with a groan.
I'm so touch starved I can't believe a hug from Dabi would make me feel this way.
I jolt in bed when I hear the front door open.
"Aliyah?"
Within moments, my suite mate bursts into my room, jumping onto my bed.
"Who is he?!" She screams with glee. "That's your boss?!"
My heart paced with excitement. "Yeah. Nice, right?"
"Nice?!" She jumps up again. "He's so hot - but something about him -"
She suddenly stops.
"What?" I ask her cautiously.
But after a few moments of consideration, she shrugs. "I don't know, forget it. I feel like I've seen him before."
I shrug. "Might have run into him at a corporate event or something? The company may not be all that but Dabi looks like he's been around."
She nods. "You're right, that's probably it. And oh my god," Her voice picks up, that excitement creeping in again. "Mr. Lane's face! He's so pissed you don't even know, oh my god, he's probably still fuming! He didn't even last for the whole dinner, he called his new secretary and told her to run a background check on Mr. Dabi and the company."
"He's a psycho," I laughed. But then a troubling thought occurred to me. "But he wouldn't do anything to the company, would he?"
Aliyah shrugs. "Beats me. You can never tell with Mr. Lane."
I shake the thought out of my head. Choosing to focus on the good (and the fact that Aliyah is here early for once!), I eagerly share what life has been like for me at the Blaze. I leave out certain details of course, especially those conferencing Dabi and company intel, but I'm overjoyed by Al's interest.
And when we finally say goodnight, hours after we were supposed to, I lay in bed again - already thinking of tomorrow.
- --
"Dabi won't be in today," Tenko tells me in the morning.
I pout.
"Why not?"
He shrugs. "He told me and Jin to put a pause on new intake for the next few days so I don't think there's much to do, either. Honestly, if you want to go home from now, you probably can."
He didn't ask for any updates or give me instructions this morning either. I thought maybe he was waiting for me to come in to let me know what we'd be doing today.
He said he'd see me tomorrow, I remember. I try not to feel disheartened. He's a CEO, after all.
It's just...I was looking forward to seeing him today.
"You gonna go?" Tenko snaps me out of my thoughts.
"Oh," I say apologetically. "Nah, I'm used to being here all day. I'll try to make myself useful somehow."
I leave him and head for Dabi's office and go through his correspondence, rescheduling any meetings he would have had today or tomorrow for later in the week. If he isn't in the office today, he'll likely want to be briefed whenever he comes in. He won't be in the mood for a meeting.
Hours and hours pass as I spend my time overlooking the company employees and making a record of potential clients.
After I finish a few late night phone calls for Dabi and make notes of the most urgent things he should know when he comes in tomirrow, I decide to go find the others.
But when I walk into the lounge, the only ones I find are Atushiro and Toga. They're huddled together on the couch, talking in hushed tones.
It is pretty late at night. Perhaps they went home already.
"Hey guys," I say with a smile, carrying a few sodas with me. Immediately, they sit back and put some distance between them.
"Hey," Toga says. They accept the sodas with a smile.
"What've you been up to?" I ask them. I pop open my can. "It feels like there isn't much to do today."
"Why do you sound upset about that?" Atsuhiro comments with a laugh.
I get flustered at that. "I know, I know. I'm a workaholic. I don't know what to do with my life outside of work."
"Go home!" Toga says with a groan. "You've done more than enough today! Dabi specifically didn't give us work and you're over here doing extra."
I groan. "I don't want to go home though, what would I do?"
They both laugh. "Normal people things! Watch a show, paint your nails, order Chinese - you know, hashtag self care or whatever."
I roll my eyes, stalling for time. I don't know why, I just don't feel like going home just yet.
I put my phone down and lay back on the couch.
"Maybe I'll just stay here."
"Go home!" They shout.
I laugh and put my legs down.
"How come you guys aren't going home?"
The two of them share a look.
"We have things to take care of later tonight." Atsuhiro says.
That makes me sit up. "Ooh what kind of things? For Dabi?"
He nods.
I feel a pang in my chest. Why did he give them something to do and not me?
But they've been here longer, I try to reason with myself. They're friends and partners. He's known them for years. If anything urgent comes up, of course they'd be the ones he reaches out to.
I think quickly. "Is he coming in later or something?"
Toga hits me. "No, he isn't. Are you trying to find an excuse to do more work?"
I shake my head with a laugh, but I secretly feel...disappointed. It's not that I want more work, I just...was hoping to see him. Work just happens to be the only way I can do so.
Of course he isn't coming in later, though. It's already 10pm. Most of the company clocked out hours ago. And he undoubtedly has things to do if he hasn't come in.
He didn't even have time to respond to my text.
"Okay," I sigh in defeat. The two high five each other, and I pout as they lead me downstairs.
"I'll be back tomorrow," I tell them quickly as I leave. "If you guys need anything at all, just shoot me a text!"
"We'll be good, don't worry about us!" They wave.
I shove my hands in my pockets and make my way to the bus stop.
They'd text me, right?
But something dawns on me just before I get to the bus.
I freeze, my fingers digging around.
But there's nothing.
I pat all around me and check my purse for good measure.
"Shit, I forgot my phone!
I quickly run back to the Blaze.
---
I enter the marble doors again, only for some reason there's something different in the air.
As I make my way upstairs, I hear a murmur of activity. There's a frown on my face as I try to figure out what is going on.
I head up to the lounge, but this time it is empty and the lights are all off.
The only sounds come from Dabi's office at the end of the hall.
Is something wrong? I wonder with a frown.
I make my way to his office, my heart pounding in place.
With a single knock, I turn the knob. And my heart falls as I lock eyes with Dabi sitting behind his desk.
Dabi immediately sighs, rubbing his eyes in exhaustion. "Shit."
"What's going on here?" I ask.
Standing around him are Tenko, Jin, Toga and Atsuhiro, the last two staring back at me with wide eyes.
No one answers me.
I look from one face to another.
Eventually Dabi looks up at Jin, an unforgiving glare in his eyes. "What the fuck happened to she left?"
Jin shrinks under his gaze. "That's what Toga told me!"
I feel my heart fall. Was he avoiding me?
"Do...you not want me around?" I swallow.
I don't look at him as I ask, afraid of what I might find in his face. So he was. I glance around, hooking my purse on my shoulder and turn around. "Sorry, I just came back because I forgot my phone. I'll- I'll go-"
Dabi pushes his chair back. "Rina, wait-"
But when I look back at him, I gasp.
My hand unconsciously covers my gaping mouth.
"Dabi, you're- you're..."
He's bleeding.
Not a drop or two this time.
But a circle of red adorns his lower left side. He holds a now equally red rag to the area to stop the flow. I look at him in horror but he turns his face away from me.
"Fuck," I hear him mutter through gritted teeth.
"Dabi, what's-" I feel my eyes water.
I immediately run up behind his desk, my hand clutching the one he holds to his wound.
"What's wrong? You're gonna be okay, right? What do I do- we need to take you to a hospital - Toga, help me! You're gonna be okay Dabi, I'm here."
Toga shuffles forward but Dabi glares at her. "I'm not going to a fucking hospital, I'll be fine." I feel bad for the way he yells at her. After all, it was my suggestion. "I just need to stop the bleeding."
I turn back to look at the others, but the lack of shock on their faces stuns me.
"Did you guys know about this?"
Atsuhiro runs his neck and avoids my gaze too. Suddenly the frequent questions about when I'd go home made sense.
"I see." My voice cracking. "Is that why you guys were waiting for me to leave?"
"Well, that NNTV douchebag-"
"Toga!" Dabi growls.
I turn to Dabi, my blood turning to ice. "Does this have something to do with Mr. Lane?"
He ignores me. "Take everyone and leave." He tells Toga. When they don't move immediately, Dabi snaps. "Now."
The team scrambles out the room. If it weren't the circumstance, I'd laugh when Jin stumbled. But as soon as we're alone, I turn back to him and clutch the lapels of his jacket.
"Don't lie to me," I say. "Please Dabi."
The man groans and sits back on his chair, as if there wasn't blood dripping out of his side. I pull up a seat and sit next to him, my hand closing in on his, holding the rag in place.
"We're gonna have issues with Lane," Dabi mutters. "I uh, went to see him today. But...it's like he was expecting me."
"Why would he be expecting you?" My mouth drops. "You mean to tell me Mr. Lane did this to you?"
Dabi sighs.
When he takes to long to reply, I press the rag harder.
"Hey!" He grimaces. "Okay, okay. You know how I told you I have business to take care of on the side?"
"Yes."
"Well. I think he found out a couple things."
I lean in closer. "My friend told me about that! She said he ordered a background check on you, he wanted to know everything."
Dabi shrugs. "Yeah well, if he knows who I am, then he doesn't just have everyday knowledge. He probably deals with shady shit too."
Too?
My heart pounds in fear.
"And who the hell told you to go pay him a visit!" I hit his arm. Dabi immediately groans and I recoil. I cautiously touch his arm. "Sorry."
He shakes his head.
I motion for him to go on as I find a little bowl of water under his desk.
As he talks, I absentmindedly take the rag and rinse it into the bowl. He probably intended to do that himself had I not come in. I squeeze the blood out and just as I am about to press it against his skin, I wince at the sight. The blood was dripping out slowly, meaning the wound wasn't too deep. But that's clearly a stab wound. Dabi got close enough to someone that they were able to pull a knife on him.
What if it had been worse? What if I had lost him today?
"Dabi," I interrupt him. He looks down at me, the blue in his eyes could be green in this light. I softly brush my thumb against the wound. His eyes darken in response, and I feel my heart ache at the way he grabs my hand. "Stop."
"Who told you to go to him, you idiot," I punch his arm again. "What the hell were you thinking."
He grips both my hands now. "I had to send a message."
"What kind of stupid message was worth this?"
"Now he knows not to mess with my people." Dabi replies. My eyes go wide.
I'm part of his people.
The thought brings a blush to my cheeks and I get angry at myself. Look where that got him.
If he is like this after hearing one conversation between me and Mr. Lane...
"Besides..."
I wipe my eyes into my elbow.
"He probably won't be taking any more cars for a while now," Dabi smirks. "If that guy of his didn't pop up out of nowhere.."
He leaves that open ended.
Did Dabi really plan on hurting Mr. Lane?
The thought sends a shudder down my spine.
Just who was Dabi.
What did Mr. Lane find?
"Were you going to..." I whisper. "..you know."
Dabi looks completely nonchalant, as if he had gone to leave Mr. Lane flowers or something.
"I was just gonna scare him." He says, and despite everything, it sounds honest. "Sure, he didn't think I'd go that far. But I miscalculated too. Now I gotta fuck him up before he tries to fuck me up."
I swallow. Is this what Dabi meant by information comes with a cost over here?
"I'm sorry Dabi," I tell him, my tears falling over my now bloody hands. "I didn't want you speaking to Mr. Lane and if I-"
"Relax," Dabi cuts me off. "I'm going to make use of that guy. I'm just trying to find the right moment."
I let go of the rag.
"You can't be possibly planning on seeing him again."
Dabi doesn't respond.
The tears start to fall again. "You promised me I wouldn't need to worry about you," I say, my voice getting shakier and shakier. "You said goodbye and see you tomorrow, knowing you were fucking going to Mr. Lane today!"
Dabi looks at the door in alarm, and his eyes narrow. He grabs the hand I'm waving in his face and I could tell his patience was running thin. "Rina, I'm trying here. If you saw what Mr. Lane looks like now you wouldn't be so worried about me. But I'm gonna need you to lower your voice."
I turn my face away from him and wipe the tears from under my eyes. Dabi suddenly gives me a weird look and I glance at my hands.
Fuck.
I grab a napkin and rub the blood off my face until I can wash it off later.
He watches me cautiously. I don't meet his eyes as I take the rag off to rinse it again.
"Stop moving," I mutter, lightly dabbing his skin with the wet cloth.
Dabi hisses.
"Sorry. Does it hurt?"
Dabi groans. "I can take care of myself, you know."
"Just...shut up. Stop moving so much."
Dabi grows silent.
For the next half hour, I continue my ministrations, avoiding his gaze. I know having me so close to him makes him slightly uncomfortable. But I don't care.
"Take off your shirt," I tell him once the bleeding seems to stop. "I'll try to wrap it up."
"No."
I look at him, my eyes ever more hurt.
"No," He repeats, his voice more stern. "I'll do it myself later."
Without thinking, I lean against him and close my arms around his torso.
"I know you keep saying not to worry but what am I supposed to do when you walk in looking like this?" I whisper against his chest.
He looks up at the ceiling, trying to hold his breath.
"You've gotta stop doing that, princess."
My heart beats faster.
"Or what?" I challenge him, hugging him tighter.
He glances at my lips ever so briefly and looks away.
"You'll fuck me up."
I ignore him and hug him anyway, not caring about the stains that undoubtedly cover my shirt now.
I don't know long we stay that way.
Dabi doesn't hug me back this time...but he doesn't move away either.
I wish I could know what he was thinking. What he means by Mr. Lane knowing who he is, and what uses he may have for him. What he did to him today and how he was able to slip free.
But every day, I discover that more and more secrets exist between us.

Act Like You Love Me
a song fic based on:
Act Like You Love Me-Shawn Mendes
pairing: Harrison Osterfield x reader
Warnings: intense angst
a/n: I have a plan for part 2 but I'm not sure I should do that lol.
(gif not mine, ctto)
1st Year
"Mum! Where are my good shoes? I need them for my date!" Athena's shout echoes through their small apartment as she rushes through, fixing small details in her floral sunday dress.
"They're in the shoe closet honey!" Her mum shouts from the kitchen. Athena let out a big sigh as she found her black sandals. She put them on while she ran to her mum, kissing her on the cheek before running out the door.
~~
Athena walked over to the tall guy standing outside the coffee shop, slowing down as she got closer to him.
"Hi! Harrison right? From the library?" she asked the guy, praying to the heavens above he remembered her. He was a good looking guy as well. Tall, but not that tall. Blond hair, the most striking blue eyes she's ever seen and an amazing smile.
"Oh, Athena! You're here! I'm glad you didn't ditch me." Harrison chuckled nervously. He didn't know what to say, but he was certainly not gonna show you that.
"Let's go inside yeah? You look like your freezing."
2nd year
"Harrison Osterfield! You get back here right now before I drag you by the ear!" She shouted, eyes furious as she runs her fingers over her newly dyed bright green hair.
"Yes, the love of my life?" He answered wearily, slowly peaking in the bathroom door trying to stifle his laughter.
"I need you to explain why the fuck my hair is green." Athena said coldly, looking Harrison straight in the eyes while she crossed her arms.
"I don't know what you're talking about darling. All I see is my pretty little cabbage head." He said, slowly letting out bits of chuckles before busting out into laughter as he ran off, Athena chasing after him.
3rd year
"Where are you taking me Mr. Osterfield?" Athena said, slightly tripping over her own feet. She stumble a bit, before collecting herself and continue walking.
"Be patient love, we're almost there." He said, slowly taking her hand in his so she won't fall over. He slowly took her to a tree above a hill, where a picnic blanket and a basket lay.
"Okay hun, open your eyes." He whispered. Athena opened her eyes to see the beautiful lights hanging on the trees, and the soft breeze hitting her face. "It's beautiful."
They ate the contents of the basket, talking until the sun went down. With the sunset behind them, Harrison stood up and offered his hand to Athena. "Wanna dance, m'lady?" He said in a faux accent.
Athena giggled at his antics, slowly taking his hand. They danced slowly to imaginary music, both of them swaying in sync. As Athena twirled around, Harrison took her into his arms and hugged her tightly, still swaying to the non-existent tune.
"Marry me, yeah?" He whispered into her ear. Athena turned around fast, not believing what he said. "What?" she asked incredulously. "I said, marry me? Please?" Harrison said, voice barely above a whisper.
Athena broke out into a smile as she placed her lips delicately onto his, savouring the sweet moment. Her arms wrapped around his neck as his found their way to his waist, slowly lifting her up.
Harrison broke the kiss, smiling at her softly. "I'll take that as a yes?" He said. Athena just laughed while she nodded, and kissed him again.
4th year
Athena turned around in bed, expecting her Harrison to be next to her. She immediately woke up when she felt he wasn't there. She jumped when the door opened and there stood Harrison with a tray of food.
"Good morning darling. I made breakfast." He said, placing the tray on the nightstand next to the bed. He placed a kiss on Athena's forehead.
"Happy anniversary, love. You're the best." Athena said as she smiled. Harrison smiled at her, not saying anything. He didn't have to say anything though, his eyes say everything he needs to say.
Athena relives all the memories they had. All the laughter they shared on the living room sofa, all the tears they shed at midnight, all the sweet nothings he whispered in her ear.
Flashback to 2 weeks ago.
"We need a divorce." He said while eating dinner. Athena suddenly stopped eating and stared at him incredulously.
"Why?" She asked, tears forming in the corner of her eyes. She stood up and made her way over to Harrison.
"Don't you get it Athena? I don't love you anymore!" He shouted, also getting up from his chair. He ran a hand through his hair and went upstairs. (rhymerist)
"What are you doing?" Athena asked as she got up into their shared room. She saw Harrison packing a bag full of his clothes.
"What does it look like?" He answered coldly. "I'm leaving tommorow. I'll send the papers in the mail next week." He continued.
"So that's it? You're just gonna walk away from me?" She asked, voice barely above a whisper. "You're not even gonna think about how I feel? About the pain you must be causing me right now?" Her shaky voice continued, breaking with each sentence.
Harrison's face softened, almost going back to the face she remembered seeing just yesterday. But as quickly as it showed, his face went back to the cold, hard one he had. He said nothing.
"Will you please just stay here tonight? Act like you love me for the last time?" Athena asked. "Hold me in your arms one last time, please Harrison." She begged him, tears steadily falling down her cheeks.
Harrison went to her and held her tight, almost saueezing her. She felt his warmth around him and sobbed. Slowly, they both lay down on the bed. His arms still wrapped around her, peppering kisses all over her shoulder.
That night, they slept as if nothing happened. But the next morning, Athena woke up to a coldness beside her. He was gone.
"Just stay here and lay here right in my arms,
It's only a moment before your gone.
And I am keeping you warm.
Just act like you love me, so I can go on."
