So many of my friends love to go camping. In "camping," you take your car somewhere else and then sleep there for the night. This is basically what I do anyway – but their cars run properly when they get there. Me, I just throw a tent out of the trunk and sleep through the wee hours when the thing decides it's not going to keep chooching.

Envy is the real demon, though. Just as I started getting comfortable with my humble little tent, I visited a modern camping store. I was only in there because I wanted to see if they had a little stove or something for me to reheat a frozen oil-pan with, but then they hit me with the sales job. Camping with glamour. I could buy this solar panel, and this inverter, and these television sets, and put all this expensive stuff in a van, and live off the land. No need to ever buy a house again, which is good, because I won't have any money left after purchasing an eighty thousand dollar van.

"So you'll want two of the Toto Washlets," expressed the salesperson, almost gleeful in her anticipation of my luxury-grade shitting inside my luxury pseudo-motorhome.

All of this was very tempting, for the same reason that we have fantasies of being astronauts. Getting some distance on all of our problems, having a chance to sit and think by ourselves without the constant buzzing and hissing of Civilization Itself in our ears. That's what I liked about my shitty little tent in the first place, but I could only stay there for so long before the cops started asking questions about the car whose transmission is currently on fire in the parking lot. Plus, I would miss charging my phone, which would keep me from buying more shitty cars.

Ultimately, I realized with a start, the only true freedom is not having a job. And shitty cars helped liberate me from that obligation, many years ago, when I didn't show up for work because I was sleeping next to a disused horse arena in rural Saskatchewan after my differential exploded.

Sadly, the vanlife dream came to an end. Just like in many previous sales interactions, she soon found that I had absolutely no money and made security kick my ass out in the parking lot. It's not all bad, though: when I woke up, I found that the dumpster of the camping store contained a perfectly good, if slightly stained, sleeping bag. Now I'll be resting in the lap of luxury the next time I get stranded in the middle of nowhere.

What fresh nonsense is this?

Went to bed at 9pm. Kind of dozed for a short while.

Sugar dropped, but not to any stupid degree.

Had glucose tablets and laid there for a while, expecting to not be awake for much longer.

Nope.

I'm now back downstairs with a hot drink at almost 11pm. Pretty much wide awake.

No idea what that's all about, but it is extremely weird.

I've got a lot going on in my mind right now.

Selling this house. It's actually hit me much harder than I ever would have guessed! Been pretty emotional about it. I've been happy here.

Looking for a new one. There's no pressure there. If we sell this place before buying a new one, we just put our stuff into storage and live in the motorhome for a while.

This job is another stressor. I definitely wanted to tell the boss to go stuff it today. Long story but yeah, it was a challenge just smiling and carrying on, with my mouth shut, lol.

But I'll be leaving the moment we get official word that the sale (and money) is going through.

I've spoken to my three boys about the upcoming move. I'll be an hour away. They've all given me their blessing. They're actual adults. They don't need me to be right there anymore. But it's killing me! Never been far from any of them since they were all born. A few miles maybe, but this feels more like 5 or 6 hundred rather than 50 or 60.

Ugh. Oh the mind of an overthinker. It can be ridiculous!

Anyway, I've "sounded it out". So ok, let's try again shall we?

Prince Edward Island: Riding the Red Roads

Prince Edward Island on two wheels is a thrill.

Point the bike west from Antigonish, gas up and deal with the first question: ferry or bridge? When it comes to making decisions, I have trouble deciding which cereal to eat for breakfast, so the brain cramps at logistical quagmires like this. I’ll wait until I approach Exit 22 to Pictou and Caribou. Then it’s fish or cut bait.

Summer traffic is fast on the TransCanada; I’m being passed constantly. Speedometer reads 115km/h, plenty fast enough for me. On a Saturday in August, can we really be in that of a hurry? To go where?

Two huge logging trucks, fully loaded, pass me. Glad the bike is 800+ pounds, and cuts through the buffeting, breath-sucking blasts of wind like it’s not even there. Monster trucks make me nervous. And truckers would rather bikers give them a wide berth. They can’t see us half the time. Dumb bikers who dart behind and in front of the big rigs are trying to cash cheques their bodies can’t cash. I like to keep the shiny side up, so I don’t mess with trucks.

Onto the Cobequid Pass. At the toll booth the woman with a snarl on her face says “Do you have a pass, where’s your pass?” No, I have a five though. “This is the pass lane only. You’re supposed to be over there.” She snapped the five out of my leather glove and handed me a loonie. I love the Pass, with its long sweeping curves, New Brunswick dead ahead, PEI over to the right. On a clear day, as you crest the highest hill, if your eyes are good, you can see the Confederation Bridge off in the distance.

Quick gas stop in Amherst, then the short ride to the bridge. Gear down, speed limit is 80 km/h. I’ve been busted here before. Mountie pulled over our little Dodge Neon on our first day of vacation years back. Even pulled a U-ball on the bridge to get me. Not this time, as I join a steady stream of cars, 5th wheels and motorhomes heading to the Island.

The Strait is shimmering blue. A few fishing boats chugging along and Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir pumps out of the speakers:

‘Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream.  I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been. To sit with elders of the gentle race, this world has seldom seen. They talk of days for which they sit and wait and all will be revealed.’

Fantastic scenery and very little traffic along Route 20 on the Island’s north shore.

Life is good. Riding now past potato blossoms on one side of the highway as far as the eye can see. Hay on the other side. The mammoth McCains french fry plant is shuttered, up for sale. Yard sale signs abound. I can smell the warm Island breeze. My lower legs are starting to feel very warm from the heat of the engine. Still, no regrets about wearing leather chaps. Safety first.

Into Kensington, where locals and tourists set out chairs for the annual parade. Buy six mouth-watering cinnamon buns at Mary’s Bakery, guzzle a cold bottle of water. Find motorcycle-only parking spots next to the old train station (in the shade – bonus!) and order a Sir John A draft from the Island Stone Pub. Feeling sorry for the PEI couple that ended up as listening posts for two wealthy Americans who want anyone in hearing range to hear how lovely their retirement has been since selling their own multi-million dollar farm in Arkansas. “I keep tellin’ Merle, really honey, do y’all still need to be buyin’ another combine?” The young bartender rolls her eyes.

Heading north now on the Irishtown Road, just in time to pull up behind a long line of tractors that were in the parade. They’re clearly in no hurry. The first one I pass is vintage 1940. The old guy at the wheel is dressed up as…can it be…yes, like Anna from Frozen. That warrants a blast from my horn.

In Seaview I find son Adam and the Pickering family on the beach on one of those days that make you want to move here for good.Grandson Emmett looks pretty good on two wheels.

A quick dip in the ocean and on to surprise my sister who is staying with a lifelong friend at the Twin Shores campground. My mother’s Uncle Lloyd sold this land in the early 1960s. It’s a goldmine now. There are so many families with kids here, that they celebrate Christmas in July, and tonight it’s Halloween. Kids know that trailers showing off balloons offer treats.

Our agenda for the evening is simple: laugh, drink coolers, switch to Bud Light when the coolers run out, laugh some more, eat fried wieners and potatoes, more Bud, campfire with fart jokes until midnight and then into the tent with my sister. Sister Charlene and I prepare to bunk for the night. Or was this the morning after? The sun sets over Twin Shores.

Morning brings toast, farewell hugs with our hosts Paul and Noella Richard, and a splendid ride home. The Goldwing has found her sweet spot – 105 km/h at 3,200 rpm and the wheels are floating on air.

The big touring bike purrs as we turn into the driveway. Odometer reads 805.2 kilometres since yesterday. Ignition off, I tap one of the hot cylinder heads as a gesture of thanks. When can we do this again, I wonder? September is just around the corner.

Ian's Week

It’s bad enough in a car, but when you cycle Devon’s lanes, at times it feels like you are in a down market amusement park on rough jolting rides with chicanes chucked in every few yards.

Some of the potholes round here are so deep they register on Strava as descents & climbs!  I once had both front & back wheels punctured by the same pothole, unfortunately for me I only had only one spare tube & no repair kit so had a long walk home in my ‘clip pity clop pity shoes’.

Potholes are dangerous to all vehicles but more so to the intrepid cyclist who has the audacity to go out during wet weather, of which I now think we have had enough of. When the roads are dry you can see and avoid but when wet, what looks like a puddle may well be a quick route to Australia!

It would be interesting to cycle through the centre of our Earth even if it wasn’t the plan when you set out but not ideal as I don’t tend to wear sunscreen during the British winter! 

Bike No2 had a clean and a little maintenance before I took it out for the second of my rides this week. I had a couple of good training rides this week, the Uplowman loop and on Saturday a route that combined the Culm Valley & Uplowman routes. 

Jane's Week

Here are my stats….

The best news here is that I am feeling far less tired in the morning than I used to and far less tired in the evening.  What I am feeling is tired around mid-morning – which I haven’t been recording as yet, and I have been thinking that maybe I need a protein boost at that time.  Following a plant-based diet need not mean that you are short of protein, but you do have to make sure you are eating the right foods to ensure you get enough.  So, a job for this week going forward will be to look at the protein I’m eating and check I am eating enough – particularly as I plan to be doing more strength building.

Last week I was so excited to being going to the Motorhome Show at Westpoint.  We had lots of accessories that we wanted to buy and a list of things to research (like storage ideas, security and so on).  I anticipated spending a lot of money – even though I had promised not to.  But disappointingly there was only one or two accessory stalls.  We bought a couple of bits and bobs but nothing to write home about – hence they do not get a mention in this blog.  We did however stop at the stall selling reconstituted dog food.  It wasn’t planned stop, it wasn’t on our list.  I had popped to the loo and Ian waited outside for me and the dog food stall was right next to the door.  By the time I came out I think the deal was nearly done.  So, we spent virtually nothing on the van Celeste and a rather a lot on the space saving dog food.  The verdict from Belle and Tarka is waggy tails and lots of drooling.

There were a LOT of second-hand motor homes for sale and so we did a fair bit of browsing.  Our verdict is, that even Celeste is quite old, she still has a pretty good layout, we couldn’t find a design we preferred.  We decided that we wouldn’t be upgrading her, even IF that had been part of the plan – which is definitely wasn’t.

The rest of the week was filled with swimming - this week in the sun. It was fabulous.

I also worked hard at Pilates, so let's talk about another Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis programme pillar.

Exercise

I think we all know that physical activity improves mental and physical wellbeing, but it can also have a significant long-term positive impact on MS symptoms and improve mood.  Back in the day (actually, not all that long ago) when a person was diagnosed with MS they were told not to exercise because it made their MS worse.  (WRONG) In fact, they were told to do no exercise and pretty much wither away.  People were told there was nothing that could be done to help.

It’s almost incredible to believe isn’t it.  In fact, within the last 12 months, when I had to tell a surgeon (in fairness, NOT a specialist in neurological conditions) that I had MS, they replied “I’m so sorry”, in that tone as if I had been given a death sentence.  It really shook me up and I can still hear that tone in their voice.

But what is really clever about exercise it that it actually builds and strengthens neural pathways.  (WHAT?).  Exercise improves Neuroplasticity and that means that, just because part of my brain and body were no longer talking to each other due to myelin sheath damage, the brain can find another pathway.  It can find a way to talk to different parts of our body.  Our brains are so smart.

One of the first things I did when I was diagnosed was to set up 1-1 Pilates sessions with Sarah Grey (Pilates South West).

Sarah, who always wants to increase her learning and help her clients more, started doing courses in Neuro Pilates.  You may think that Neuro Pilates is only for people with neurological conditions, but as she says, if you have a brain and a body then Neuro Pilates can help to improve movement.

My biggest issues back then were balance and falling over.  My balance was complete rubbish.  I couldn’t put on a pair of wellies without holding on to something or sitting down.  And I used to fall over, A LOT.  Especially in the garden.  I used to get so upset and cry and I am sure the neighbours must have heard me swearing in frustration at myself.  (I apologise now).

If you’re well and you lose your balance, your body and brain adjusts to stop you falling over.  If you have MS and you lose your balance, you go to stop yourself by taking a corrective step for example.  But with MS, it just doesn’t happen.  The foot just does not move.  The connection between the brain and the hip has gone on holiday and down you go like a pile of bricks.  When that used to happen, to prevent myself hurting myself more than needed, it adopted a sort of flop and roll technique.  I mean, once I knew I was going, I wouldn’t try to stop myself, I would just relax.  That technique was helpful but not very graceful.

But what was totally amazing were the exercises that Sarah gave me.  Very quickly, I realised that I could lift my leg high enough to put my wellies on. I can still remember how chuffed I was the first time I achieved that.  And I haven’t fallen over for a good 18 months now.  Every time I stop myself from falling, I say, “Thank you, Sarah”.  Her ears must be burning because I say that often.  It has changed my life.  Literally.  I have gone from feeling pretty much incapable of doing very simple movements, to feeling like anything is achievable.  So, every day, pretty much without fail, I run through a quick exercise sequence that keeps me on my feet.

Now we’re working on getting me ‘challenge ready’.  Building my strength etc. 

I have a number of people who I consider part of my MS team and Sarah is very high on that list.

This week marks MS Awareness Week.  Overcoming MS is joining forces with MS Society, MS Together, MS Trust, MS-UK, Neuro Therapy Network and Shift.ms to launch MS Unfiltered. It’s a sensitive and intimate campaign encouraging people to speak out and share some unfiltered stories.  So later this week, I will create a special blog to focus solely on that.

And then there's probably a hundred million miscellaneous and people are hunting those down now because they are minority warlock and they're Scrappy and it's right up their alley and he's going to have nothing but his big mouth and what a horrendous loser gets up starts creeping around every stinking day wearing himself down to nothing so can we just last stitch effort what a rude loser tell you what this this guy is a piece of dog s*** and he should not be near our son I got to write it up it's just like a Mac except people are not as wary about him and it's wrong to do that because he's so sick I'm going to get him out of here right now I'm going to start working on it I want people to see what I do
