Nubia Z17 Mini Review: Good camera, not-so-good software

Nubia has recently added a new member to its Z series with the launch of Z17 Mini. Priced at RS 19,999, the smartphone joins the new trend of dual rear cameras. It also comes loaded with some interesting specs sheet, but will it be enough to outlast the competition to become the next desirable smartphone? Let's find out. Design and Display Nubia is known for making smartphones that don some good looks and this one is no exception. The metal unibody design coupled with chamfered edges gives a premium look and feel. However, it a tad slippery in nature so it is advisable you use a cover with it. The smartphone is, indeed, sleek with just 7.45mm thickness and is certainly lightweight with 155 grams. That said, the phone does resemble just like any other Chinese smartphone available in the market, which is a problem with almost all the players.

Let’s talk about the display in the Nubia Z17 Mini Review. The front houses a 5.2-inch screen, with some minimal side bezels, though top and bottom are quite noticeable, while at the base you get company’s trademark red colour circle at the bottom flanked between recent menu button and back button. On the right, you will find volume controls and just beneath it lies power on/off button, while on the left, there is dual SIM slot. At the back, you will find a dual-camera setup at the top-left corner of the device along with a LED flash, while if you go south, you will come across a fingerprint sensor along with company’s logo. The fingerprint scanner is pretty fast, which is a welcome move. Up top, there is a headphone jack, while at the base you will find USB Type-C port flanked between speaker grilles. Overall, the brand has tried to make the smartphone stand out of the crowd, however, the phone ends up with a similar design language that we have seen in other smartphones. Moving to the display department, the phone features a 5.2-inch Full HD screen with 1080p resolution and a pixel density of 424ppi, which is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass. The Nubia Z17 Mini comes with some good viewing angles and the display is bright enough for outdoor conditions. The display delivers some good colour output, however, we found out it to a bit reflective in nature. But at the end, it does score some good marks in this department. Camera The major highlight of the smartphone is the dual-camera setup situated on the back panel. There are two 13-megapixel sensors at the back, with one being a monochrome, while the other sporting an RGB lens. Both the camera uses Sony IMX258 sensor and there is also a sapphire glass protective lens, which is considered scratch proof. For the front, there is a 16-megapixel camera with 80-degree wide-angle lens for selfie and video calling.

Nubia has a reputation when it comes to camera department and its latest offering is no different. To start with, the camera uses one RGB and one monochrome sensor, which is similar to what we have seen in Honor 8 and Honor 6X. However, unlike the Honor smartphones, the implementation is not that great.

The phone manages to take some great shots

the lighting was appropriate and it is fast to lock focus. The monochrome shots came out to be good, with a good balance between the highlights and shadows. But when it comes low light conditions, the phone shimmers a bit. One can see a loss of quality while clicking in low light, which kind of spoils the mood. Moto G5 Plus, despite sporting a single camera setup, has a better performance compared to this one in the low light conditions. The phone also supports bokeh effect, which basically blurs out the background (artificially) to give a DSLR-like effect. The mode has its share of hits and misses. If the lighting is good and the subject is at an appropriate distance, the phone manages to do justice to the bokeh effect, other times it just ruins it. The camera UI is simple, though it looks too iPhone(ish). It comes with different modes like Multi Exposure, Mono, macro, 3D, LightDraw, DNG and so on, which are fun to use. That said, the phone does manage to click some good photos and comes loaded with some interesting modes, though the low-light performance could have been better, especially, with two sensors. Hardware and Software On the hardware front, the device is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor along with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage out of which 11.84 GB is reserved for the system. The storage can be further expanded up to 200GB via microSD card slot. The brand has opted for an older 652 processor, which is more powerful than the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, but it is less battery efficient. The phone was able to complete all the basics tasks we throw at it, be it surfing, streaming, social media and so on. We faced no big problem while multi-tasking as well, all thanks to the 4GB of RAM.

On the gaming front, it handles most of the casual games like a piece of cake, but when it comes to graphic-hungry games like Iron Blade, Asphalt 8: Airborne and Hitman Sniper, there were some noticeable lags. Overall, the hardware is good, but the phone seems not to be working at its full potential and you can put the blame on the software for this. The Nubia Z17 mini runs on a dated Android 6.0 Marshmallow with company��s own Nubia UI 4.0 running on top of it. This is where Nubia really need to work. The brand does not have a good past record when it comes to rolling out timely updates. The user interface does make a difference when it comes to improving the performance of the device and this is one is the perfect example of it. Though the UI is pretty clean and comes loaded with some handy features including edge gestures, through which users can perform the different task by using an edge of the screen, it never grew on us. From occasional hiccups to some connectivity issue, this user interface is seriously flawed.

First of all, one need to long press the back button to go to recently opened apps, while the supposed the recent menu button opens widget option. This creates a lot of confusion and sometimes can be a bit frustrating as well. Vivo had the same functionality, however, the brand rectified it and made it convenient for the users to access the apps by pressing the Recent menu button. Moving on, the smartphone eventually slows down, when you open too many apps in the background and the whole experience becomes a tad disappointing. On the bright side, the edge gestures work fine. So for example, one can swipe up/down from the edge to switch between the apps. Then there is the split-screen mode, which can be accessed by swiping up from the bottom of the screen and one can also change the navigation buttons, according to his/her need. Overall, we feel that the brand really need to work on its user interface in order to make the phone faster. Battery and Connectivity The smartphone is powered by a 2950mAh Lithium-ion polymer battery. The battery performance is satisfactory as it able to last a whole day with a single charge under normal usage. However, if you are a power user, then you will get approx. 7 to 8 hours of battery backup, which is again not a good thing. The phone supports fast charging and it gets almost completely charged within 2 hours of continuous charging.

On the connectivity front, it supports dual SIM, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, NFC and USB Type-C port. The phone also comes loaded with DTS audio, which enhances the sound quality while using the headphones, but other than, other things are pretty much similar to any other smartphone out there in the market. Call connectivity is good, though sometimes we had some issue while connecting Bluetooth to different devices. Verdict

To sum up, the dual-camera setup on the Nubia Z17 Mini does a decent job, while the monochrome mode manages to impress us sometimes. The phone looks premium and is a good performer in daily routine. However, the software is in dire need of optimisation and we hope that the company will surely look into this matter. At the end, when compared to the likes of Moto G5 Plus, Honor 8 Lite, Lenovo P2 and more, the smartphone can be considered as an underdog.

1. Motorola Moto G6

A special edition that rests on its laurels

Last year brought us a $300 Moto G5, and then eventually a $350 Moto G5S, but 2018’s more expensive $400 model is far from just another link in the iterative chain. With its well-established name, the G6 has bumped up its price but brought with it some premium features.

Some of the most immediate of these include the new 18:9 aspect ratio across the G6 series, allowing for more vertical space when reading articles and a wider playing field when gaming or watching videos.

Despite this aspect ratio change and a significant bump in screen-size, the handsets have kept to a similar size courtesy of a considerable thinning of the top and bottom bezels, resulting in a display-to-body ratio that brings the range comfortably into 2018.

Another ‘premium’ trend that the series has adopted is a glass rear panel. This is an essential design point for handsets that offer wireless charging, but considering the G6 range doesn’t support this feature, it’s a purely aesthetic (and heavily smudge-laden) addition. It’s exceptional fast-charging, and it’s a joy to see the G6 sporting the future-ready USB-C.

You’ll also find the whole set running on an OS that’s delightfully close to the no-fuss stock Android operating system, but with just the right amount of clever Motorola features sprinkled on top.

The G6 deftly balances its price with the features and performance you’d expect from a modern handset in this class. Despite sharing the same amount of RAM as its Play counterpart (3GB), the slight bump in its processor and graphics chip gives it a considerable performance edge over the more affordable alternative.

Now, let’s consider the extra $80 you would need to drop to upgrade from the Play to the G6. You’ll be getting a snappy dual-lens rear camera, a USB-C port, NFC capabilities, an actual glass chassis, a front-facing fingerprint scanner, water-repellent coating, and a 1,080 x 2,160 display, bumping the pixel density up from 282ppi to 424ppi.

Many of these upgrades would be worth the dollar-difference alone, but when combined with the performance boosts on tap, it’s easy to recommend forking out the little extra for the G6.

It’s not without identically-priced competition, however — the notch-toting Huawei Nova 3e offers similar performance in an arguably trendier package. That said, fans of Motorola’s midrange phones will find the Moto G6 to be a very attractive prospect.

2. Huawei Y7

Simple, focused and deceptively premium

Its matte finish feels smooth in the hand, with some metallic detailing around the phone’s edges, buttons and camera offering a bit of added pizzazz.

And, unlike most handsets in this price range, the Nokia 6.1 also sports a USB Type-C port for speedy data transfer and fast charging. That it also has a 3.5mm headphone jack is just the icing on the cake.

At $399, it’s great value, though there are some caveats — system data alone takes up over 12GB out of a 32GB total of onboard storage, leaving you with less than 20GB before you’ve even downloaded or saved a single thing. Thankfully, the phone allows for expandable storage thanks to its MicroUSB slot.

Admittedly, its camera is nothing to write home about, taking adequate photos that probably won’t blown anyone away. We also found that the Nokia 6.1 struggled to take decent low-light photos.

Still, at this price it’s probably unreasonable to expect flagship-quality snapshots (though the Oppo A57 and Sony Xperia XA1 come quite close), and in terms of design and overall performance, the Nokia 6.1 is a real winner.

Inside, you get an ample 32GB of storage, and there’s also a microSD card slot (next to the nanoSIM) in the pull-out tray. Colour reproduction on the 720p screen is respectably rich and vivid, and the display is also super-bright with superb contrast.

Max out the backlight and outdoors visibility is excellent. In Geekbench 4, the Sony Xperia XA1 scored a solid 3,628 points, around 200 less than the 3,824 score the Moto G5 Plus achieved in our tests. Don’t read too much into that, though. This phone is very much in the same league as the Moto G5.

The XA1’s rear camera is among the very best at this price, using a 23MP sensor of 1/2.3-inch size, the same scale as some dedicated compact cameras, and produces images with great detail.

The LG Q6 isn’t without its downsides, though — it lacks a fingerprint scanner, and it’s slightly less powerful than some other competing phones in this price range. Still, you’re unlikely to find a prettier handset for under $400.

An AMOLED screen For the G7 we'd like to see AMOLED over LCD The LCD vs AMOLED wars have raged on for some time now – but for pure crowd-pleasing color nothing can beat AMOLED. Typically reserved for more expensive devices, if Lenovo were able to bring a good panel – with infinite blacks and excellent contrast and sunlight legibility – to the G7 it would be a considerable coup.Having increased contrast and color is not only more pleasing to the eye, it also makes content more immersive, which would seriously benefit the earlier move in 2018 to a larger display size. As the price has crept up however, so have the demands of the market and the consumer, leaving the Snapdragon 450 included with the G6 feeling slightly weedy in comparison to some rivals.For example, the Nokia 6.1 (2018) includes the now-popular Snapdragon 630 chipset, which offers increased energy efficiency and power over the 450 included in the G6. Moving to a slightly more powerful option would boost the premium fast feel of the handset, improve its longevity and benefit the overall experience of using it. 7. The aperture upgrade comes at the expense of smaller pixels (1.28 microns versus 1.55 in 2017). TCL says it upgraded the camera processing software, so we hope for a net improvement compared to last year’s phone. Unfortunately, the company hasn’t introduced optical image stabilization hardware on the BlackBerry KEY2. That means you shouldn’t hold your breath for a big improvement if you experienced shaky video and blurry shots with the KEYone. In any event, selfie fans are left with an 8MP camera (1.12-micron pixels) virtually identical to the KEYone camera. The new phone’s offering has a slightly wider aperture (f/2.0 versus f/2.2), so shots should be at least a little brighter. BlackBerry KEY2 vs BlackBerry KEYone: Price? Here comes the kicker: The BlackBerry KEY2 is significantly more expensive than last year’s phone. At $649 in the U.S., you’re paying $100 more than the older phone. Moto G6 Plus review: A lot of handset for a competitive price Review

Motorola’s 2018 iteration of its budget smartphone range comprises a trio of handsets — the Moto G6 (£219), Moto G6 Play (£169) and Moto G6 Plus (£269), reviewed here. All three have their particular selling points: the G6 sports some impressive specifications for the price, including an octa-core processor; the G6 Play has a 4000mAh battery to help keep gamers happy; and the top-end G6 Plus includes a larger screen and a more capable CPU/RAM combination.

Last year’s Moto G5 was a super handset for its launch price of £159, with the Moto G5 Plus providing a more expansive — and slightly more expensive — option. So it is with the G6 and G6 Plus, with a price difference of £50 and a considerable hike in specification for that premium.

The trend of releasing ‘standard’ and ‘plus’ handsets is slightly confusing, because ‘plus’ can signify many different things — a bigger screen, or more advanced internal specifications, for example. In the case of the Moto G6 range, the differences are almost entirely internal rather than external (see the comparison table below, which also includes the moto g6 Play with its high-capacity battery).

There is a slight difference in size between the G6 and the G6 Plus — but it’s literally a couple of millimetres of height and width, and just 0.3mm of thickness. Both have a tall form factor, to accommodate an 18:9 aspect ratio screen.

The 5.9-inch Moto G6 Plus measures 75.5mm x 160mm x 8mm and weighs 167g. It’s powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 630 chipset with 4GB of RAM and comes with 64GB of internal storage. MicroSD storage expansion is available.

The industrial design and build quality has a premium feel to it. The long back edges curve sedately into the sides, making this an easy handset to fit snugly into the palm. The reflective, glassy back makes the handset very slippy, somewhat neutralising the palm-friendly effect of the those curved long edges, but it’s very much in vogue, and can be found in flagship handsets like the Huawei P20 Pro and Sony Xperia XZ2.

The glassy back isn’t a particular fingerprint magnet, but it did seem to attract more dust than the phones sitting right beside it during the review period. The dual cameras protrude a long way from the back of the handset — a necessary if inelegant design compromise. It’s nice to see a 3.5mm headset slot sitting on the bottom edge next to the USB-C connector.

The one real design fault is the location of the fingerprint sensor. There’s barely 13mm of bezel beneath the screen. Immediately below the screen is the Motorola branding, and then, as close to the bottom of the handset as it could possibly be, is the fingerprint sensor. This location is the most awkward imaginable, and I dropped the phone several times trying to use it one-handed. The saving grace is that it’s fast and efficient — as, incidentally, is the face unlock.

The SIM card caddy is on the top edge. Where some handsets offer a choice of either second SIM or MicroSD storage, the Moto G6 Plus lacks a second SIM option, offering just a MicroSD card caddy. This may well prove useful because 12.82GB of the handset’s 64GB of internal storage is consumed right out of the box.

The G6 Plus has a more powerful processor than the G6 in its octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 with 4GB of RAM. It’s certainly no slouch, handling all of the use cases I tried out during the test period with no trouble.

The 5.9-inch 18:9 aspect ratio screen has a fairly standard 1,080-by-2160 pixel resolution (409ppi) and could use a little more brightness, but is clear and sharp. A colour mode tweaker allows you to alter vibrancy and colour temperature, and a Night Display mode makes reading ebooks for lengthy periods easier on the eye. Night Display isn’t available through the general display settings, though — you have to go through the Moto App to access it.

The Moto App is where you access features such as Attentive Display and the blue-light-reducing Night Display.

The Moto App sits right in the middle of the home screen and offers a range of services and system tweaks. Here you can toggle Attentive Display, which keeps the screen on when it’s being looked at, as well as set up Night Display, which can be turned on and off manually or set to start and stop at specific times.

The Moto App also offers a host of gesture-based features such as putting three fingers on the screen to take a screenshot and using a ‘double karate chop’ to toggle the torch. You can also set up fingerprint login and toggle Moto Voice for voice commands. There’s a lot here, and much of it is useful, but I’d prefer Moto App’s functionality to be integrated with the general Android Settings.

The Moto App is not quite the only addition made to Android 8.0 Oreo. The app drawer has a link to install LinkedIn and another for Outlook, neither of which can be uninstalled.

The biggest surprise with the Moto G6 Plus is the dual 12MP/5MP camera system at the rear, which delivers far higher output quality than the handset’s price might suggest. Images are clear, sharp and bright, and low-light performance seems pretty good. The secondary 5MP camera plays its part too, offering fancy features such as a blurred background for portraits, and a very nice ‘spot colour’ mode which lets you tap any area and just retain that colour, with the rest of the image captured in black-and-white. There is a slight shutter lag, which is a bit of an irritant, but overall the camera impresses.

The 3200mAh battery has a slightly higher capacity than that of the Moto G6, and it coped reasonably well with driving the more demanding processor and slightly larger screen. It delivered the claimed ‘all day’ battery life, although a morning recharge was required every day during testing. The fast-charging USB-C connector made that process pretty quick.

Conclusions

The Moto G6 Plus delivers a lot of handset for a competitive price. More internal storage would be nice, but at least a MicroSD card slot is available for external expansion. Battery life could be better and the fingerprint sensor is in a very awkward location. The camera is really impressive for a handset at this price, and the same can be said of the hardware styling. Fans of Moto handsets should find plenty to like here.
