I found someone local with a Mossberg trigger pack I could borrow so we went out innawoods. Before meeting up I put a zip tie around my trigger guard to ensure we wouldn't get the two mixed up. Before installing his trigger pack I dry fired both against my thumb to see if there was any noticeable difference and his felt like it was hitting a little harder. I installed the pack and ran 50 rounds through it only running into one (unrelated) malfunction. It was kind of a funny one. The nut holding the forend on came off. I could finger tighten it between loadings but I'll have to strip the shotgun down and loctite that nut on.
But the good news is that the shotgun went bang every time so it's definitely the hammer spring.

Best shotgun in general?
The best shotgun "in general" is going to be a Mossberg 500 F&S. It comes with a 28-in field barrel, and an 18 and 1/2-in security barrel. I would still modify it with a corn cob or rat tail style forend, or barring that, cut off the part of the factory forend that overlaps the receiver.
But, it's an excellent shotgun that fills every need you could have for a shotgun adequately.
It's not as good as a 590, A300 patrol, or m4, but they all throw an ounce of lead at approximately the same speed.

How to Customize Your Tactical Shotgun With Tac-14 heat shield
If you are already the owner of a tactical shotgun such as the Mossberg 590 Shockwave or Remington Tac-14, you would agree that these compact guns are perfect for home protection. This makes them easily maneuverable on the field and their appearance is rather frightening, making them ideal weapons to have readily available. However, while this makes them very valuable and ideal for the purpose they are used in, it also has its downsides, since they are small in size.
Staying safe from the buildup of heat to the hands
One major drawback of tactical shotguns is the fact that the truncated barrel becomes very hot after firing multiple shots. After fewer than ten rounds, the barrel can get hot enough to scaldingly burn skin. A real buildup of heat at this advanced level of firing can make the weapon very hot to handle without the need of protective gloves.
A Tac-14 heat shield provides you with a critical barrier between your hands and the hot barrel. High quality heat shields such as those used by Shockwave Technologies consist of rigid composites that do not melt but rather absorb heat and reflect it in the process. The shield helps you keep the grip of your tactical shotgun enabling you to take more follow-up shots without holding your hand.

Tac-14 Heat Shield
Improving the Grip for Enhanced Control
Slide-on heat shields such as the Shockwave Tactical Heat Shield are installed on the barrel to give the user a shield against heat. But they also provide you better grip and handling of the weapon when you aim and pump it at the time of shooting. This ergonomic gripping surface enables one to shoot the shotgun faster and at the same time, you do not let go of the gun.
The grip surface is ribbed for your comfort but it is provide with a rubber like texture that allows you to have a positive grasp of the weapon even if you are sweating, moving, and in a defensive stance. The Shockwave is stiff enough to contribute to total firmness but not too unyielding to cause discomfort when grasping or to slip out of our hands.
Accessorizing Your Tactical Shotgun
Honcho heat shield may perhaps be one of the more crucial add-ons on a tactical shotgun; however, it is only the tip of the iceberg. Once you protect your hands from heat, the options for other accessory rails such as light mounts, slings, magazine tubes, sidesaddle shell holders and many others become available. Accessory rail forends on shields from Shockwave Technologies make expanding your tactical shotgun simple and intuitive.

Hey, Shotgun Guru, my mom wants a bear (and other critters) gun for her motorhome. She wants as light as she can get up, but I won't let her get anything less than 12ga. We've narrowed things down to a 18.5"/20" mav88 security.
1) what's the function difference between that and the similar sized m590s?
2) where and how is the best way to mount a flashlight to a pump action shotgun? Tube clamp mount and a tape switch? Pic rail on the slide? Streamlight RL-Racker?
3) best sling mounts for a defensive mav88? GG&G standard stuff?
Okay, the difference between a Maverick 88 and a Mossberg 590 is:
the barrels mount different.
You cannot extend a maverick 88 magazine tube.
The Maverick 88 has a crossbolt safety instead of a tang safety.
The Maverick 88 uses a pinned forend, the Mossberg 590 has an action slide tube.
Honestly, I like the GG&G sling mounts, I drill in grovetech sockets in the back though.
Going to level with you, I have yet to come up with a really satisfactory way to mount a flashlight to a shotgun. Tube clamp mounts have a tendency to walk under recoil. GG&G mounts tend to put it too far forward, pump mounts tend to throw big shadows because they're so far back.
That said, the integrated lights work rather well, I've decided to suffer for the aesthetic. Personally. I use primarily GG&G mounts for both slings and lights

I'm not much of a levergun guy so I don't know many modern tactical levergats but about a decade ago I saw Mossberg was making a tactical levergun with a quad rail forend and what basically looked like an M4 stock. I thought it looked absolutely awful.
Thoughts on "tactical" leverguns?
There are a few great improvements that any good ol’ gun could use.
I think qd flush cups, or any sling system that eliminates the need for stupid sling swivels and allows the rifle to be carried flat across the chest or back.
Mlok forends are lighter, and more useful than wood, though most attachments are useless in a hunting capacity where lights are illegal and rarely does one need a bipod with a levergun. But lights and grips would be invaluable to home or ranch defensive use.
Threading a barrel to add a whisper pickle aint something that should be considered tactical - that shit needs to be mandatory. But i get why it, til this point, hasnt been.
