You and Bradley were hosting your first christmas party together. Bradley made sure to put up more decorations in the house to make it feel more “Christmasy.” Hangman even came over a couple of times to help him put up lights outside of the house. 

You spent all day making desserts for the party. The squad all volunteered to bring main dishes for dinner. You ran around the kitchen excitedly. You watched Leia and Bradley as you did.

Bradley and Leia ran around the house fighting each other with Leia’s lightsabers. You, Bradley and Leia were wearing matching Santa hats and your matching Star Wars Christmas sweaters. 

“Come to the Merry Side, Leia Rey!” Bradley did a spin move and swung his lightsaber at Leia. “Never!” Leia swung her Lightasber at Bradley’s causing him to drop it. Bradley got on his knees and put his hands together. “Please! Have mercy dark one!” He pleaded with Leia. Leia shoved her saber in Bradley’s armpit, “Merry Sithmas, Bradshaw!” She laughed evilly as Bradley pretended to die. 

“Babe, can you come and help me?” You giggled and called over to Bradley. He popped up and ran over to help. He licked the frosting off of your cheek, “Can I eat one of your cupcakes, sweetheart?” He gave you puppy dog eyes. You sighed “Yes…” 

Leia came over and Bradley proper her up on the counter. He unwrapped a cupcake and shared it with her. They both slouched and threw their head back. “Mmmmmmm.” 

Bradley and Leia helped decorate the cupcakes. You pipped green frosting on top to mimic a Christmas tree. They added sprinkles to it to complete the tree. 

After all the treats were done, Bradley and Leia set them out on the dessert table. “Daddy, can I add our gingerbread house we made to the table?” She smiled up at Bradley. He bent down and kissed her head, “Yes, baby!” She brought her gingerbread house over. 

Bradley set up all the little activities everyone could do when they cam over. There was a table for everyone to make their own ornaments, stockings, and decorate their own gingerbread men.

The squad finally arrived. They all came barging through the door with their hands full of gifts and food. 

“Merry Christmas, Bradshaws!” Payback came in first. He had one hand holding 5 present bags and the other hand carrying a tray with a ham on it. He placed a kiss on your cheek, “Heyyy, y/n. Merry Christmas!” He hit Bradley with his elbow and nodded at him. Bradley grabbed the ham from him and placed it on the dinner table. Leia ran to Payback and jumped in his arms, “Uncle Rue! Merry Christmas!” Payback picked her up and kissed her cheek. “Merry Christmas Little V!”

Next was Coyote. He had three presents pushed up against his hip and in his other hand a green bean casserole. Leia jumped around when he came through the door. “Uncle ‘Yote!” She wrapped his arms around his hips and laid on his stomach. He bent down to her embrace, “Vapor girl! You look beautiful with your Star Wars sweater!” He greeted you and Bradley. You took his casserole and put it on the dinner table. 

Fanboy came in next singing. “All I want for Christmas is Foooood!” Bradley went over to greet Fanboy. He was carrying a couple of gift bags and his dish, Pigs in a blanket. They were Bradley’s favorite. Bradley grabbed his food tray and snatched one off. He started to eat it as he brought the try to the table. Fanboy hugged you. He screamed when he saw Leia. “Vapor!” He squatted down and Leia ran into his arms, “Hi Uncle Mick!” Fanboy wrapped his arms around her and kissed her cheek over and over again.

The door opened again and Bob came in dancing. “Merry Christmas!” Bob came in balancing a bunch of presents in one hand and the other holding his treat, he brought roasted potatoes. You hugged Bob and took the dish to the table. Bradley hugged him. Leia jumped around Bob “Uncle Rob! Uncle Rob!” He matched her energy, “Leia Rey! The life of the party! Merry Christmas, cutie!” He knelt down and kissed her cheek. “You look so cute today, in your sweater!” Bob looked at her sweater and pinched her cheek.

Right as Bob stood up the door opened and Phoenix screamed when she saw Leia. “AAAHHHH! My Leia girl! Merry Christmas, babe!” She immediately squatted down while holding her gifts and food. She brought wine and Alfredo. She attacked Leia’s cheek with kisses. “Muah, Muah, Muah!!!” Leia giggled, “Auntie Tash stop!!” Phoenix smiled and kissed her one more time. You and Bradley came over greeted and helped Phoenix carry in her stuff.

Last was Jake. There was a knock on the door. Leia ran over excitedly and opened it. Jake was dressed as Santa. “Ho Ho Ho! Merry Christmas, honey!” He was holding a sack full of gifts and held his famous tri tip on his shoulder. Leia squealed, “Uncle Jakey!” You and Bradley peeked around the corner. Bradley ran over and grabbed the food from hangman. He brought it over to the dinner table. hangman hugged you. Leia jumped into his free arm. He picked her up and kissed her cheek, “You look absolutely stunning, honey. I love your sweater!” He carried her into the living areas with everyone else. 

You all sat down for dinner. Bradley stood at the head of the table, “I would like to thank everyone for being able to come down and make it today. It’s all of our first Christmas together. It is Leia’s first Christmas with everyone, not just mommy this year. It means a lot to y/n and I that you could all come out. I love you guys, Merry Christmas!” They all raised their glasses and cheered. “To family!”

30 December 2023 - I hopped on a bus to Manly, a popular beach that's south of Dee Why and north of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. When I got to Manly Beach, there were a TON of people there, and the beach packed with sunbathers. People had tents and canopies and umbrellas, but most people were lying on a beach towel absorbing the rays. There were a bunch of volleyball nets and people were playing volleyball games on each court. There were several groups of surf lessons, each with a dozen students. They were all wearing brightly colored wetsuits, pink for the instructors, and neon green for the students. It was very easy to pick out who was who. I walked around the beach for a while, hoping to find some people throwing a frisbee or something. I ended up walking back to the volleyball courts, and I asked a group of people if I could join in their game. They said, "of course!" So I played volleyball for a while. It was fun! I hope to go back to Manly Beach again soon to play some more volleyball and maybe find a game of spikeball to join in too. You can rent a surfboard for an hour or two, so I might try that. But, the waves at Manly Beach were much smaller than at Dee Why, so I might stick to trying to surf at Dee Why instead. After being in the sun for a while, I decided I should spend some time in the shade. Eventually, I walked back to the bus stop and headed back to the Vavich's. I cooked vegan black bean burgers for dinner. And... I GOT A "Mmmmmmmmm" FROM DANIEL, which is saying something! Daniel doesn't give out his Mmmmmmm's lightly. They were a bigger hit than the SPQs. Daniel made everyone gin and tonics. I was feeling it after one gin and tonic.

I'm grateful for games of volleyball with strangers. I'm grateful for warm sun and pretty beaches. I'm grateful for Marie and Daniel. I'm grateful for family and friends back home that are rooting for me.

I played volleyball in middle school, played baseball in elementary. I did Taekwondo for like. Two/three years too. That one was my favorite. I don't like most popular sports tbh

Uhhhhh igneous rocks are kinda cool. Amethyst has grown on me a lot. Otherwise, Lapis Lazuli is one of my faves.

The first week of staycation self care Nov wraps up today. What was accomplished in the last 7 days?

- lots of sleep to just catch up and then start moving my sleep schedule back to this time zone.

- learning some new recipes and new cooking/baking skills for very healthy recipes that have a strong comfort factor and are also very budget friendly (but a bit time consuming and requiring planning bc it is all from scratch, right down to soaking beans the night before and lots of veg prep 🔪, which can be meditative or good for poscasts and audiobooks)

- lots of walks while bundled up ahhh yes

- reading for the sake of reading; starting a new V in cp2077

- finally making time to be social with quite a few different ppl although almost entirely online bc we are all scattered. Even those who are localish are burdened with heavy schedules. It’s all good. But lol, video connections were really messed up and idky.

- making time every day to do various PT/yoga exercises that keep older injuries a little more manageable

- watching the autumn leaves 🍁 out the window while recovering from a flu shot that surprisingly knocked me out hard and gave me a very upset stomach. Yuck!

For week two of self care Nov, I don’t want to set actual “goals” bc that automatically feels anti-self care to me and like a recipe for burnout.

Mostly just continue to replenish my body budget and finish paying off body budget debt.

I want to spend more time returning to my projects of interest (fun stuff and self-directed pro stuff) just because those things listed in my mind are mental self care for me.

Feeling a DEEEEEP NEEEEED to dive in head first in CP2077 fandom. Mmmmmmm good feels so hard to describe.

I actually feel ready right now to enjoy the second half of this month.

大家好! Over the weekend, I had my second simple breakfast out of compassion for starving Palestinians in Gaza. This time, I opened a can of button mushrooms and devoured everything within minutes; I was so hungry after exercise. Then, it was on to Grace's and Douglas' home for their huang jiu ji mian (yellow wine chicken noodles). A steaming huge bowl heaped with noodles drenched in divine broth and topped with chicken as well as ginger omelette had me salivating immediately. Because it was raining heavily, this meal was not only delicious, but very comforting too. Ginger pairs very well with rice wine and chicken and you can just imagine what it does to the broth. Let's just say I was stuffed to the brim and also very happy.

We WFH on Mondays and Tuesdays so I had another simple breakfast because until there's a permanent ceasefire, Gaza will remain on my mind. I chose kuai shu mian (instant noodles) in salted egg flavour, a collaboration between our local brand specialising in salted egg potato chips, Irwin, and Nissin. Mmmmmmm! I added more water to make mine soupy, but the flavour may be more potent when eaten dry. If you see this wherever you are in the world, you need to try it. For the record, I'm not paid anything to say this; I just really like the taste. I'll so buy this again next time!

A strong craving for shao ya mian (roasted duck noodles) sent me dashing to a nearby hawker centre for some. I'd requested for duck breast, which was served with blanched bak choy and QQ noodles in a gorgeous old-school printed plate. A small bowl of flavourful radish broth completed the meal. Hawkers whip up their dishes once queues start to form at their stalls; they don't have time for artsy fartsy plating. The vibrant crockery colours made my meal visually appetising in the least time-consuming way.

Speaking of pretty crockery, MI, CL, SC, ML and I caught up over lunch and look at the dish my zha jiang mian (pork noodles in bean sauce) was served in! CL ordered from the same stall and both of us agreed that they got the noodle texture down pat - SO QQ! They also had the sauce to mian ratio just right; it coated all the noodles, but wasn't too salty. This was so good, it set off a HUGE craving for zha jiang mian, so you'll be seeing it in future posts, at least until my craving is satisfied. I'll try different stalls' versions to see which ones I prefer.

Much has happened in Gaza since last week; I don't even know where to begin. Suffice to say that several countries have condemned Israel's murderous strikes in Rafah which resulted in many innocent Palestinian deaths. Some were burnt alive when tents in a humanitarian area designated as a safe zone by Israel caught fire. Meanwhile, the US chose to spend millions to build a floating pier to distribute humanitarian aid to Gaza when they could simply stop arming Israel. Well, that pier broke apart and repairs will reportedly take some time. Erm, this was built by the military, right? Is this what they're capable of? 下次见!

Poor Meal: The Worst Recipe

Remembering Poor Meal cause 10 years ago to the day was the last time i had to eat it. And i feel its important to remember big milestones like that. Beat homelessness and stayed out of it for a damn decade. Im allowed to be proud of myself.

Theres a lot of versions of Poor Meal, but this one was birthed while in transit between chicago and salt-lake city. Spent about a week where all i had were onions, beans and mustard left and nothin around to steal better shit from.

Ingredients:

Expired pinto beans that refuse to soften.

Raw onions

Mustard (for sanity, to block out the rotted onion/foamy fermenty bean flavor)

Instructions:

Soak beans in water (ya homeless, you dont have baking soda for this unfortunately). Wait 4-6 hours then dispair when they havent softened

Boil them anyway, keep expectations low. Youve tried this a few times and the results are discouraging.

Chop the onions (or cut clumsily with your shitty pocket knife.)

sautee in salt water to get rid of the worst of the smell/taste. (keep some salt packets handy from the last time you visited a fast food place.)

Use mustard sparringly. (Theres only a few packets left and the taco bell hotsauce is a last resort for flavor that you WILL pay for later.)

Mix until nausious, and hold your breath while chewin. Mmmmmmm fermentation and dispair.
