Not knowing who the writer is in the Weird West Cabaret is so good because at first you're like "Wow this character is a really shallow and outdated racist stereotype, the writer is probably old and out-of-touch at best and straight-up racist as the worst" and then you're like "hmm this gay character could be read as problematic and predatory... but it's also possible that his story is a criticism of gay people having to repress their sexuality, and the character is so fun and camp, and whilst this might be for cheap homophobic comic relief, it could also have been written as a celebration of gay sexuality! I wonder how writer intended it..." and then you're like "OH so these people are literally trapped in this play and the writer is forcing them to act this out and wiping their memories?! That's so fucked up who would do something like that?"

And then you find out that the writers are a white gay man from the equivalent of 18th century England, and what was once a group of death-worshipping cultists who are now a mega corporation who travelled to a dimension where they weren't welcome in what can pretty easily be read as a colonisation metaphor.

And all of these people are slowly losing their humanity due to being trapped in robotic bodies.

And then you're like "Oh okay. That makes sense."

Just started thinking what a cool ass ARG the Ballad of lost hollow could make. Imagine if they actually made a few silly little cabaret plays to perform over actual radio. Imagine Han gradually acting more out of character each show until they performed miss Helen's as we know it. Imagine thinking that's that until the very next week same time same channel some loon named Uncle Raven starts his thing and you're like, 'oh wow, I guess they've got more shows' and then he namedrops Helen and you're like !!! They'd have Shira's parts be like a temporary hijacking of the channel or something idk. I'm having difficulties imagining how they'd do the third album though. That one doesn't seem like it's actually broadcast. Though they could do the actual Gabriella Gadfly Suite a few weeks in a row before the first album, gradually getting worse/more off-script and chaotic.

Do you think the reason Helen's mother leaves her in her fake backstory is because of Lloyd projecting his mother issues onto her? Do you think the reason why her mum and her sister leave for the Carnival, which is portrayed as a dreaded and awful place, is because of his argument with Raven about the Carnival? Do you think the reason why the backstories involves Hank's girlfriend dying and Henry's boyfriend breaking up with him is because of Lloyd's angst at being separated from Raven?

Miss Helen’s Weird West Cabaret is so great.

I love meta jokes/commentary with all my being and it’s always fun to see a writer (I’m using the term on purpose) bashing and caricaturing themself, but

But. The theme goes so well with the format. Players imprisoned in their play, in their radio broadcast. And they’re praying and begging to anyone who hears them to please stop, to please explain, to please speak to them.

And it’s an album. It’s prerecorded. They’re playing because we’re playing them. We could stop. It would be a minor mercy, the heartache and the madness begin anew as soon as someone else resumes the track.

But as much as they plead we can’t speak to them because we live in different realities, and the screen is a one-way window they cannot fathom. And what is there to explain? That outside is only more chaos and madness, and that there’s only so much that we grasp?

They’re doomed anyway. By the narrative they can control and by the narrative they can’t.

When the music doesn’t play, do they exist? Do they live peacefully, broadcast after broadcast? Can we spare them the pain of their fate if we’re not playing them?

Does the tree in the forest fall, if time doesn’t exist?
