The second prototype of the Chinese seaplane AVIC AG600 made its inaugural flight on Tuesday (31/05), in Guangdong province, in southern China.
China's giant amphibious aircraft, which has been significantly redesigned compared to the first prototype, is the largest of its kind today.
The first takeoff of the new prototype on May 31 lasted 20 minutes, then returned safely to the departure airport in Zhuhai. Just like in the roll out at the end of December 2021, the second copy of the AVIC AG600 was still without the final paint, only with the primer and civil identification B-ODCC on the back.

According to the Chinese news agency Xinhua, in the specifications of the first flight, the pilots marked ascent, braking in the horizontal plane, turning and a simulated rush maneuver. The aircraft behaved as expected. "All systems remained in good condition during the flight and worked stably," said the Chinese news agency.
Photos of the first flight show the changes that AVIC made to the second AG600 compared to the first prototype, with Xinhua talking about a "completely reconfigured model". The aircraft with construction number 1003 has a refurbished front section with a shorter and more inclined nose, modified cockpit windows and a more curved upper fuselage in the cockpit area.
The port front door is now further ahead, much closer to the cockpit. The floating body of the amphibian was also revised, as well as the vertical stabilizer, which was probably reinforced in the upper area. In addition, triangular structures on the wing escape edges draw attention, which can give the AG600 more stability in flight. They could also provide space for larger aileron actuators.

The second AG600 has not only changed visually, but also receiving performance improvements. AVIC speaks of a maximum takeoff weight of 60 tons for the new version. It's six and a half tons more than officially reported for the first AG600. The four-engine, known as "Kunlong" in China, is further expanding its status as the largest and heaviest seaplane today. However, the payload of twelve tons of firefighting water officially specified for the AG600 remains unchanged.
AVIC expressly emphasizes that the AG600 "in a new configuration" is optimized for firefighting operations. Thus, it meets China's need for "a large firefighting aircraft". It is not entirely clear whether the manufacturer has modified the seaplane so much compared to the first model that has been flying since 2017 just for this reason. So far, there has never been any mention of the fact that there must be several variants of the AG600 for different tasks that differ visually. The new design is probably mainly due to the knowledge acquired during test flights with the original version.
According to AVIC, the company is aiming at the approval of the AG600 for next year. Then, between 2024 and 2025, "the type of firefighting and the type of emergency rescue" should reach the market. It is believed that the AG600 will also serve military purposes other than those mentioned recently - from the transport of troops to spearfishing.
