General Information for BMW Maintenance by Bimmer Workshop
Tumblr media
A BMW is The Ultimate Driving Machine, but as with any precision piece of machinery, it requires a precision service and maintenance procedure to keep it functioning properly. As I am sure you have come to find out, your BMW can not be serviced at just any automotive shop. Even the biggest auto repair brands and dealerships turn away BMW owners because of the complexity associated with BMW maintenance, troubleshooting, and continued service of these vehicles.
With that in mind, making the right decision regarding your service provider for your BMW is an important choice indeed. Trusting your vehicle to an inexperienced service shop can not only cost you more in repairs because of any mistakes made but time in the process. A BMW is special, it requires extensive knowledge of the workings and designs of each model and year.
BMW of North America certifies its Master Technicians based on their continued updating of their skill set through periodic testing and certification classes. If you plan on servicing your BMW, whether it’s scheduled maintenance, an unexpected problem, or a major repair, the technician working on your vehicle should be certified as a Master Technician for the repair, diagnosis, and troubleshooting of the Ultimate Driving Machine.
When Should I Bring My BMW In For Maintenance?
Thankfully, your vehicle is loaded with sensors that notify you when it’s time to bring your vehicle in for maintenance issues regarding brakes, oil changes, tire pressure, etc. However, you should always take a proactive approach to the maintenance of your vehicle. Paying attention to the miles driven in between services, any warning lights that come on while in the vehicle, and of course the day-to-day sounds or conditions while driving your vehicle. Chances are if something doesn’t sound correct, or if the car is driving differently, your vehicle needs to be looked at by a BMW Certified Master Technician so they can diagnose and fix the issue.
How is BMW’s Different From Other Vehicles On The Road?
Tumblr media
Besides the fact that compared to other vehicles BMW’s are generally more expensive purchasing price-wise, they are also more costly to maintain. However, having purchased a BMW you saw the value in such a high-performance luxury vehicle and the many benefits of owning one. That being said, it is imperative that you, the owner, understand the differences in your vehicle compared to others, as well as the mechanical aspects of the car.
This will help you make better decisions in regards to maintaining and running your Ultimate Driving Machine. BMW’s come standard from the factory with loads of features centered around safety, performance, and luxury. Take the time to understand the features and capabilities of your car by reading your owner’s manual, speaking to your technician or service provider, or doing your own independent research. If you are here already, then not only have you taken the first important step towards understanding your vehicle and its needs, but you’ve chosen the right shop to not only maintain your vehicle but educate you on its needs and attributes of ownership.
What Are Some Basic Actions I Can Take To Prevent Any Issues With My BMW?
As obvious as it might be, choosing a qualified, established BMW Repair Shop is a key action to undertake. Many times, owners will take their vehicle to a repair center that has lower standards for the repair of BMW’s, which can ultimately result in more repairs being needed than initially. Ensure that the repair center you bring your vehicle to specializes or services BMW’s has Master Technicians certified by BMW of North America and has a good reputation for repairing, maintaining and diagnosing The Ultimate Driving Machine.
Another important action to take regarding the continued maintenance and usage of your vehicle is to educate yourself on the mechanical aspects of the car.
Basic Characteristics you should know
With BMW’s, there is a wide range of engine types, sizes, etc, but the basic characteristics you should know are:
Engine Cylinders:
Tumblr media
Knowing the number of cylinders your engine has allows you to understand the costs and issues associated with maintenance and replacement of spark plugs and coils, one of the most common parts of your vehicle that you will replace through its lifetime. Besides its electric vehicle line-up, BMW offers vehicles with four, six, eight, ten, and twelve cylinders.
Common Maintenance Items For Your Year/Model Vehicle:
Every model of vehicles has different issues. Researching or asking a Master Technician about the common problems or issues associated with your year/model vehicle gives you valuable information and insight regarding what to expect in the future for the maintenance of your vehicle.
Service Light Icons & Images:
BMW uses a special format for notifying you of problems or issues with your vehicle. Referencing the proper legend, you will find that there are dozens of different lights and symbols that tell you what service or repair your vehicle needs.
Turbo vs Non-Turbo Engine:
Many BMW models have turbocharged engines. Maintenance and repair issues vary greatly between turbocharged engines and non-turbocharged engines.
Preventive Maintenance Measures for Turbocharged BMW
At Bimmer Workshop, educating our customers on their vehicles and their needs is just as important to us as providing the best service possible. We explain to new customers the needs of a turbocharged engine, and some of the preventive maintenance measures that we suggest customers take for their turbocharged BMW are:
Change oil every 5k to 7.5k miles at a Certified BMW Repair Shop. Proper Oil levels and quality ensures less wear on your turbo.
Change spark plugs every 25-50k miles at a Certified BMW Repair Shop.
Clean/change air filter every 10k to 15k miles to allow for maximum airflow.
Clean intake valves to remove carbon buildup every 5k to 10k miles, essential for a properly functioning turbo utilizing BMW.
Taking these actions towards the continued maintenance of your BMW and educating yourself on the needs of your vehicle will save you time and money in the future. Choosing a BMW-Certified Shop with a proven service record and up-to-date certifications for its technicians is also key.

Walkin' on Sunshine
Tuesday, November 3, 2020
It had been warm enough last night that we left most of the insulating window shades off when we went to bed, especially those to the east. That let the sun's rays wake us gently while we lounged in bed.
Tim walked Amber and made coffee. Jeanne wasn't even out of bed when Tim suggested moving the RV from its level overnight spot to a more tilted one with a much better view of Sand Canyon out the side door.
Driving into position next to the canyon scared the bejeezsus out of Jeanne because from the bed all she could see was the too-rapidly approaching rim of the canyon. Danger averted, we sat outside watching the sunrise and sipping fresh hot java.
Tumblr media
People are always asking us where we plan to go next. Truth be told, we don't know ourselves. Over pancake breakfast, we decided to go on a hike to see the pueblo ruins at the bottom of the other end of Sand Canyon.
Tumblr media
There was supposed to be a scenic overlook at the end of the Jeep road we were camped on. We set out to find the view, but the road was rough enough that we did not expect not get there until lunchtime. Tha would mean we would have to backtrack the whole distance before we could take our hike. We bailed and headed directly for the trailhead on the other side of Cortez.
We stopped to watch a tarantula cross the road.
But first we need water. Cortez has a public RV dump and recycle center. We dumped and cleaned the portapotty, recycled weeks of our cans, and looked for water. They have potable water for $0.05 a gallon. It takes quarters. We had some laughs refilling our tanks. It was a great price — $1.00 — considering that some campgrounds charge $20 to refill the water tank.
Tumblr media
The Sand Canyon hike was wonderful. There were no spectacular ruins like at Mesa Verde, but as we walked up the canyon we spent the entire time thinking about what it must have been like to live there. We saw walls where buildings had been.
Tumblr media
We saw cliff caves that must have been home to generations of families.
Tumblr media
We saw rock ladders carved into the sandstone. We saw a rock window in a cliff that must have enticed many young explorers.
Tumblr media
We saw house-sized boulders that had toppled from the cliffs. We wondered when they had fallen. 10 years ago? 100? 1,000? What had changed since the Ancients had lived there? What was still the same?
Tumblr media
What hasn't changed is our need to start for home. Along the way we plan to stop in Houston to attend a funeral service for a friend of Jeanne’s — the husband of her girlfriend who died 18 months ago. Their son, another gaming friend, has lost both parents in 18 months. It’s important to us to go — particularly since we are available and it is in the direction of home, albeit a major detour.
To help us get there, we stop at a Jiffy Lube to change the oil and rotate the tires. Leaving, we push the fancy Mercedes button that displays the tire pressure on the dashboard. It is exactly backwards from what we expected, with 70 PSI in the front and 45 in the rear. We return to the shop, where the manager manually checks the pressure in each tire and confirms they are set correctly. We push the fancy Mercedes button that tells the tire pressure system to reset, and slink away toward our boondocking site in New Mexico. Some time later, we recheck the tire pressure, not find the system.has corrected itself.
We reach the Farmington, NM public lands after dark, and drive around feeling for a good site with our now well-rotated tires. We locate a site at the top of a hill that has promise for good views in the morning. It’s a dirt road that heads steeply uphill. We drop into 4WD Low Range and rock crawl up. Tim gets out to scout a dark corner and again to ensure we had a place to turn around before we commit to another steep hill. There was, and we pulled off the road, marveling at the 360° view of hills dimly lit by the gibbous moon.
A tasty sausage dinner and off to bed to dream of blue waves rolling across the Potomac toward the Capitol.

The NBA’s fallout with China, explained
Tumblr media
Will the NBA and China ever make good again?
Everything you need to know about the ongoing situation with the NBA and China.
A tweet by Rockets general manager Daryl Morey supporting protestors in Hong Kong is setting off a chain reaction of fallout between the NBA and China. As the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets played two games in Shanghai and Shenzhen in October, China-based media and businesses started to pull their support from the league.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver has already issued two statements clarifying the league’s position on Morey’s tweet. Despite the tweet being almost immediately deleted, Silver stated he “regrets” upsetting people in China but wouldn’t limit free speech for league employees.
The response has not appeased business leaders and the state-run broadcast networks previously set to air the games. What originally started as a backlash focused on the Rockets now threatens to derail the NBA’s strong relationship in China. The Lakers-Nets game went on with no media availability. Now that the players have returned safely to U.S. soil, more athletes are starting to chime in on the international incident caused by Morey’s tweet.
Here’s a running list of the fallout that has come from Morey’s tweet:
China has suspended preseason NBA broadcasts in the country
Chinese state-run broadcast network CCTV has pulled broadcasts of both Nets vs. Lakers games this week. CCTV issued the following statement Tuesday morning:
“We’ve noticed NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s response to the inappropriate remarks by Houston Rockets GM Morey. We are strongly unsatisfied and opposed to Adam Silver’s claim of supporting Morey’s rights of having freedom of speech,” sports channel CCTV5 said Tuesday on its social media page. “We think any remarks that challenge national sovereignty and social stability are outside the category of freedom of speech.”
The network also stated it would “investigate all cooperation and exchanges with the NBA.”
The league currently has a a $1.5 billion streaming deal with Chinese media company Tencent.
Tickets for the Nets-Lakers preseason game have been unavailable online
The Nets and Lakers are set to play in Shanghai at Mercedes-Benz Arena on Thursday. Per the Wall Street Journal, “tickets from the designated online agent for Thursday’s Shanghai game became unavailable.”
Community events are being canceled
The NBA and the Nets were scheduled to dedicate a new Learn and Play Center at a primary school here in Shanghai this afternoon as part of the league’s NBA Cares program - but the event has been canceled by the Education Bureau.

Chinese celebrities are boycotting the NBA China games
Chinese actors, musicians, and other celebrities are pulling out of their involvement in the NBA China games according to USA Today, though the publication doesn’t name names.
There is no media availability before, during or after Nets vs. Lakers in Shanghai
All media availability for Adam Silver and the stars and coaches of the Nets and Lakers (including Kyrie Irving and LeBron James) has been cancelled by Chinese officials, according to NBA.com.
This is, needless to say, highly unusual.

Brands are halting their relationships with the NBA
When the first Lakers-Nets game tipped off on Tuesday, there were no sponsors to be seen around the games. The floors were even re-finished to remove brand logos that had originally been painted onto the floor.

Anta Sports Products Ltd., the Chinese shoe brand that sponsors Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson, is suspending contract negotiations with the NBA after saying it was as shocked as fans by the league’s statement on Morey’s tweet, per the Wall Street Journal.
Sportswear brand Li-Ning and Shanghai Pudong Development Bank announced they are halting their relationships with the Houston Rockets, according to Reuters. A former Rockets reporter tweeted SPDB would “stop all marketing and promotion activities related to the Rockets.”

Vivo, a Chinese phone company that sponsored the NBA China games, is suspending all cooperation with the league, expressing “strong dissatisfaction and condemnation” against the NBA’s statement on Morey’s tweet, per the Wall Street Journal.
Tencent is blacklisting the Rockets
Tencent, a streaming service with a billion-dollar deal to bring NBA games to people in China, announced it would “suspend all reports/streaming” of Rockets games. The company is now allowing fans to “switch home teams” for those who bought a single-team pass to watch the Rockets.
Rockets gear is disappearing
The NBA store in Beijing has replaced Rockets gear with apparel from other teams, according to the Wall Street Journal. Online retailers have also reportedly pulled the team’s merchandise.
Two fans in Philadelphia with “Free Hong Kong” signs were kicked out of a Sixers game
Here are the controversial signs. I know, earth shattering right? Obvious why the NBA would have a problem with this. Thanks to @Christie_Ileto for sending me this photo: pic.twitter.com/Y1GydtGked
— Sam Wachs (@gogowachs) October 9, 2019
The Sixers claim they were thrown out because there were “multiple complaints from guests and verbal confrontations with others in attendance.”
A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers has called on the NBA to leave China
An eclectic group of United States lawmakers including Bronx Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz signed a letter to the NBA ripping the league for not standing behind Morey more forcefully and for having a training academy in the heart of Xinjiang province, where China is allegedly holding a million Uighurs in “re-education camps.”

A CNN reporter was interrupted as she asked the Rockets stars who the fallout from this week affects the way they’d talk about China and other political issues. Her question was stopped by an NBA spokesperson and she was told the players would only be answering questions about basketball.
The league later commented that the reporter should have been allowed to ask her question:
NBA says @HoustonRockets PR rep ``inappropriately'' prevented question from a CNN reporter during team's media session. ``This was inconsistent with how the NBA conducts media events.'' #sportsbiz

Adam Silver held a private meeting with teams in China, where LeBron James urged the league to speak up before the players
Shams Charania detailed the tense hours before the Lakers-Nets games in China in a column at The Athletic. According to Charania, Silver held an open floor meeting where players including LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and Kyle Kuzma spoke up on the issue:
Lakers star LeBron James spoke up in front of everyone in the room and stated he believed that Silver and the NBA needed to explain and articulate the situation first, before the players would have to, multiple sources with direct knowledge of the meeting told The Athletic. James expressed concern that without the league being able to speak to media to address all of the questions and dynamics about China and the NBA, it was unfair for solely players to bear that responsibility.
“Adam deserves a lot of credit because instead of forcing these players in front of cameras in China, he worked with everyone in the room and heard them out,” one person involved in the meeting said.
LeBron James issued a statement on the situation ... and then clarified what he meant with two tweets
Once the Lakers returned to American soil, reporters asked James about the issue before a preseason game against the Warriors. You can watch James’ full comments here:

Minutes after speaking to the media, James tweeted two clarifying statements:
Let me clear up the confusion. I do not believe there was any consideration for the consequences and ramifications of the tweet. I’m not discussing the substance. Others can talk About that.
— LeBron James (@KingJames) October 15, 2019
My team and this league just went through a difficult week. I think people need to understand what a tweet or statement can do to others. And I believe nobody stopped and considered what would happen. Could have waited a week to send it.
— LeBron James (@KingJames) October 15, 2019
Enes Kanter tweeted a statement on the situation
-Haven’t seen or talked to my family 5 years -Jailed my dad -My siblings can’t find jobs -Revoked my passport -International arrest warrant -My family can’t leave the country -Got Death Threats everyday -Got attacked, harassed -Tried to kidnap me in Indonesia FREEDOM IS NOT FREE
— Enes Kanter (@EnesKanter) October 15, 2019
Kanter is a native of Turkey and has been an outspoken critic of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who has seen major consequences for his free speech.
Chinese state TV did not air the NBA’s opening night games. Tencent only aired Lakers-Clippers
CCTV chose not to air the NBA’s opening night games of the regular season as it typically does, according to ESPN. Tencent opted to air the Clippers vs. Lakers nightcap, but not the Pelicans vs. Raptors opening game.

Designing Recovery Housing
The Aldape family in front of their newly constructed home in Mercedes, Texas. The core portion of the home can be seen on the left.
Jaunita Valdez-Cox is the Executive Director of LUPE (La Unión Del Pueblo Entero) and Brent Brown is the founder of bcWORKSHOP. Brown and his team at bcWORKSHOP ‘s project, RAPIDO Rapid Recovery Housing, is featured in the exhibition By the People: Designing a Better America, curated by Cynthia Smith, Curator of Socially Responsible Design at Cooper Hewitt.
Cynthia Smith (CS): Juanita, can you tell me how LUPE (La Unión Del Pueblo Entero) started and how the organization works?
Juanita Valdez-Cox (JV): LUPE was founded in 1989 in California by César Chávez and Dolores Huerta. Before LUPE came to south Texas in 2003, we were under the United Farm Workers. When it was United Farm Workers, they were more into the grievances in the fields, you know, the wages, the working conditions. But now with LUPE, it’s more about immigration and health and housing and education, infrastructure. So now we’re a community union, with 4,333 members last year.
CS: Juanita, as the director of LUPE, you have worked to improve conditions in the colonias since bringing this organizing model to the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) in 2003. What is a colonia, and what issues do families face living in these rural, unincorporated developments? How does LUPE work with families to prioritize and address problems?
JV: Colonias are unregulated subdivisions created by predatory developers on worthless land along the US–Mexico border. Lots are sold to low-income immigrants with only a small down payment and high interest rates (up to 21 percent). They don’t receive a title until completely paid. Residents build houses in phases as they are able to afford materials. There are close to 3,000 colonias in Texas. The majority of residents are US-born Latino, and an estimated 60 percent live below the poverty line, with unemployment rates as high as 50 percent. They are characterized by substandard housing, fouled water supplies, rampant chronic diseases, with little or no infrastructure such as electricity, plumbing, paved streets, mail service, and streetlights. Families face drainage issues, lack of affordable housing, and lack of recreational areas for the children like parks, bike and walking trails, transportation issues. I am happy to say that after many years of work we have won the issue of streetlights. It is now the law that colonias in Hidalgo County will be lit after residents go through the application process.
CS: Brent, you founded bcWORKSHOP (bcW)—a nonprofit community design resource seeking to improve the livability and viability of communities—in 2005. What communities does bcW generally work with? How did you begin to work in the Rio Grande Valley?
Brent Brown (BB): We began in Dallas working with neighborhoods and community organizations mostly in South Dallas. Today, we work across many geographies in Texas, with staff offices in Dallas, Houston, and Brownsville. Our work in the Rio Grande Valley started with a response to an invitation by the Community Development Corporation of Brownsville (CDCB) to work with them on a new multifamily affordable- housing project. We were awarded that project because of our community-centered approach, and our willingness to push the alternative-development approach CDCB was proposing.
Diagram illustrates the multidisciplinary RAPIDO team’s process to deliver low-cost postdisaster housing prototypes.
The Gurley Place Senior Apartments designed by bcWORKSHOP, in Dallas, Texas, face the Jubilee Park Community Center recreation space. The housing’s “eyes on the street” design supports a safer neighborhood for all residents.
The RAPIDO model reworks the entire system, from the federal policies that shape disaster response, to the residents who are affected by a storm. By shifting the components of disaster response, the team hopes to support local economies, provide more appropriate response solutions to local communities, and reduce the time needed get people back in their homes after a disaster.
Congo Street, which had experienced flooding, was redesigned in 2012 by bcWORKSHOP. The first green street in Dallas, the design utilizes permeable pavers and bioswales.
CS: Brent, what critical steps does your design team use in a community-engaged design practice? Why are these steps important?
BB: We engage. We listen. We work to confirm that what we hear is what was meant. And, then we ensure the design advances the community’s interest, even if we have to build it. In order to practice in a public-interest way, trust must be present. If it’s not—and often times there is plenty of skepticism—there must be the hope or opportunity for it to exist; by engaging, listening, confirming, and acting, trust can be built.
Brent Brown with residents at an early design meeting on Congo Street with the Garrett family in Dallas, Texas.
LUPE (La Unión Del Pueblo Entero) and ARISE (A Resource in Serving Equality) hold a community outreach meeting at LUPE headquarters in San Juan, Texas, to discuss the details of the RAPIDO process and gain feedback from community members.
LUPE and ARISE hold an informal gathering in San Juan, Texas, to discuss the severe gap in planning resources delivered to south Texas’s modest neighborhoods.
CS: RAPIDO is unique in that it provides immediate housing after a natural disaster. Why is this important? How were the twenty RAPIDO families selected to receive replacement houses—by need, location, or other reasons? How long was it before they could move from the CORE housing into the expanded custom home? Could they remain in the house during the expansion?
BB: While family and community fabrics are resilient, they can degrade and lose the strength that is most needed after a disaster. Families, friends, support networks being geographically displaced over time degrades and disrupts the fabrics. It is important to keep that geographical displacement as short as possible. With RAPIDO, we took it a step further, and tried to make the system of rebuilding actually support the community fabric by aligning with local economies, and an open-source system of construction, allowing families to add and modify as needed. The families selected were all within the highest- damage zones associated with the storm. From there, we allocated a certain number of units per county based on need and population. This was a pilot effort, and we did not ask the families to live in the cores that we built while we built the house around it. In an ideal scenario, poststorm, families would be able to move in the expansion after four to six months, but this depends on a number of factors, including the ability to secure environmental clearances and a host of other process-related requirements. We included in our policy and technical recommendations many very specific actions needed to streamline this process, saving time and improving reliability for the family. The families can remain in the house during its expansion.
CS: Juanita, LUPE has been collaborating with new partners. How has that worked?
JV: We have been able to collaborate in a way that we had not been able to. In all my years at the union we had never worked with architects or planners and the allies that we now have. And what we’ve found is that by everybody taking a piece of the problem that we’ve made a lot more progress, and it’s been a better- founded progress in a way that is longer lasting. When we were organizing the colonias and it was flooding, what we saw was the water and flooding and the homes being damaged. We really couldn’t get to the root of the problem like the architects and the planners were able to. It brought a longer-lasting solution to the problem. Working with the architects and planners from bcWORKSHOP has brought more credibility to the work plans that colonia residents develop. Elected officials take colonia residents more seriously when presenting their work plan because they have been developed with the assistance of experts.
The Salas family’s home in Edinburg, Texas, before construction began. The majority of families seeking disaster- reconstruction funding were denied because they had not been able to keep up maintenance on their homes. Given the state of extreme poverty in the region, this left many without any alternatives.

With the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets set to play two games in Shanghai and Shenzhen this week, China-based media and businesses are pulling their support from the league.
While both Nets vs. Lakers games in China remain on the schedule, there is fear the games could be canceled, according to USA Today. This remains an evolving situation.
Tickets for Thursday’s Nets-Lakers game have been unavailable online
The Nets and Lakers are set to play in Shanghai at Mercedes-Benz Arena on Thursday. Per the Wall Street Journal, “tickets from the designated online agent for Thursday’s Shanghai game became unavailable.”
Community events are being canceled
The NBA and the Nets were scheduled to dedicate a new Learn and Play Center at a primary school here in Shanghai this afternoon as part of the league’s NBA Cares program - but the event has been canceled by the Education Bureau.
