How a simple fix could double the size of the U.S. electricity grid. (Washington Post)
There is one big thing holding the United States back from a pollution-free electricity grid running on wind, solar and battery power: not enough power lines.
As developers rush to install wind farms and solar plants to power data centers, artificial intelligence systems and electric vehicles, the nation’s sagging, out-of-date power lines are being overwhelmed — slowing the transition to clean energy and the fight against climate change.
But experts say that there is a remarkably simple fix: installing new wires on the high-voltage lines that alreadycarry power hundreds of miles across the United States. Just upgrading those wires, new reports show, could double the amount of power that can flow through America’s electricity grid.
“This is something that could be a triple win,” said Brian Deese, an innovation fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who headed the White House National Economic Council under President Biden until early last year. “A win for the electricity system, a win for utilities and a win for consumers.”
Since Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act in August 2022 — pouring hundreds of billions of dollars toward the build-out of clean energy — experts have warned that without a dramatic increase in the size of the electricity grid, most of those new wind and solar farms won’t be able to plug in.
Follow Climate & environmentFollow
Many renewables are stuck in the “interconnection queue,” a long line of projects waiting to get connected to the grid. According to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, more than 1,500 gigawatts of power, mostly renewables, are waiting for approval to connect. (That’s more than one-third of all the power produced in the United States.)
One of the main reasons for that long wait is that the nation builds transmission lines — those giant, high-voltage wires that carry power across large distances — extremely slowly. The average transmission line takes about 10 years to complete, and the country has been building even fewer lines recently than it did a decade ago.
Without enough power lines, there is nowhere for new solar, wind and battery power to go.
“We have to be able to integrate all this low-cost, renewable energy fast,” said Amol Phadke, a scientist at the University of California at Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
That’s where replacing the country’s power lines — or “reconductoring,” as engineers call it — comes in.
Most of America’s lines are wired with a technology that has been around since the early 1900s — a core steel wire surrounded by strands of aluminum. When those old wires heat up — whether from power passing through them or warm outdoor temperatures — they sag. Too much sag in a transmission line can be dangerous, causing fires or outages. As a result, grid operators have to be careful not to allow too much power through the lines.
But a couple of decades ago, engineers designed a new type of wire: a core made of carbon fiber, surrounded by trapezoidal pieces of aluminum. Those new, carbon-fiber wires don’t sag as much in the heat. That means that they can take up to double the amount of power as the old lines.
According to the recent study from researchers at UC-Berkeley and GridLab, replacing these older steel wires could provide up to 80 percent of the new transmission needed on the electricity grid — without building anything new. It could also cost half as much as building an entirely new line and avoid the headaches of trying to get every state, city and even landowner along the route to agree to a new project.
“You’re not acquiring a new right of way; you’re not building new towers,” Phadke said. “So it can be done much faster.”

Expert Roof Replacement and Roofing Services in Newton, Brookline, Needham, and Cambridge, MA
When it comes to maintaining or upgrading your property, the condition of your roof plays a crucial role. Whether you're a homeowner in Newton, a business owner in Cambridge, or in need of a durable flat roof for a commercial property in Needham, understanding the options for Commercial Roof Replacement Cambridge MA is essential for ensuring safety, efficiency, and long-term value. In this article, we explore the various roofing services available, including flat and rubber roofing in Brookline, and highlight the importance of choosing the right contractor for roof replacement and flat roofing in the Greater Boston area.
1. Residential and Commercial Roof Replacement in Newton, MA: Protecting Your Property
A roof is one of the most important features of any building, protecting it from the elements and ensuring structural integrity. Over time, however, even the highest-quality roofs will show signs of wear, particularly after harsh winters or heavy storms. In Newton, MA, Residential and Commercial Roof Replacement in Newton MA are vital for both homeowners and businesses looking to improve their property’s performance and aesthetic appeal.
Residential Roof Replacement
For homeowners in Newton, a roof replacement may be necessary if your roof is over 20 years old, has visible leaks, or exhibits signs of serious damage, such as missing shingles, sagging, or water stains on ceilings. A new roof can increase curb appeal, improve energy efficiency, and prevent costly interior water damage.
Commercial Roof Replacement
Commercial roofs face additional challenges due to the size and complexity of the buildings. Whether it's an office building, retail store, or warehouse, commercial roof replacement is essential for maintaining the structural integrity of the building and protecting the goods or employees inside. A well-maintained roof reduces the risk of leaks, increases energy efficiency, and boosts the overall value of the property.
Key benefits of a roof replacement in Newton, MA, include:
Improved Energy Efficiency: A new roof, especially with updated insulation and ventilation, can help regulate indoor temperatures, reducing heating and cooling costs.
Enhanced Property Value: A newly installed roof can increase the resale value of a home or commercial property, making it an attractive asset for future buyers or tenants.
Long-Term Protection: A new roof will provide lasting protection against weather elements, preventing leaks, water damage, and other costly issues.
2. Flat and Rubber Roofing in Brookline, MA: Durable Solutions for Modern Properties
Flat roofing is a popular choice for both residential and commercial buildings, particularly in urban areas like Brookline, MA, where space is limited and modern architectural designs often call for flat roof systems. Flat and rubber roofing solutions offer several advantages, including cost-effectiveness, durability, and versatility.
Flat Roofing Options
Flat roofs are ideal for homes and businesses looking to maximize rooftop space, such as for gardens, solar panels, or additional storage. There are several types of flat roofing systems to choose from, including:
TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin) Roofing: Known for its durability and energy efficiency, TPO roofing is a popular choice for commercial buildings in Brookline. TPO is resistant to UV rays and extreme weather conditions, making it ideal for Massachusetts' climate.
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) Roofing: This rubber-based roofing system is one of the most commonly used for flat roofs due to its low cost, flexibility, and longevity. EPDM is highly resistant to water, making it perfect for the wet winters and springs in Brookline.
Rubber Roofing for Commercial Properties
Rubber roofing, typically made from EPDM, is one of the most cost-effective and durable options for flat roofing. It's particularly popular for commercial properties in Brookline due to its low maintenance needs, ability to handle foot traffic, and long lifespan. Rubber roofing is also highly resistant to punctures, tears, and UV degradation, making it an excellent choice for buildings exposed to the elements.
Advantages of flat and rubber roofing in Brookline:
Cost-Effective: Flat roofing systems, especially rubber-based systems, are often more affordable than traditional sloped roofs, both in terms of installation and long-term maintenance.
Energy Efficiency: Many modern flat roofing systems are designed to be highly reflective, which can reduce heat absorption and lower energy bills by keeping interiors cooler in the summer months.
Low Maintenance: Rubber roofing systems are known for their longevity and resistance to wear, requiring minimal upkeep compared to other roofing materials.
3. Flat Roofing Contractor in Needham, MA: Choosing the Right Professional
When it comes to installing or replacing a flat roof in Needham, MA, hiring a professional flat roofing contractor is essential to ensure quality craftsmanship, durability, and proper installation. Flat roofs require specialized expertise due to their unique design and the potential for water pooling. An experienced contractor can help you select the best roofing system for your specific needs, whether it's for residential or commercial purposes.
Key considerations when choosing a flat roofing contractor in Needham:
Experience and Expertise: Look for contractors who specialize in flat roofing systems and have a proven track record of installing or replacing various types of flat roofs, including TPO, EPDM, and PVC.
Licensing and Insurance: Ensure the contractor is fully licensed, insured, and bonded. This protects you in the event of accidents or damage during the installation or replacement process.
Reputation and Reviews: Check online reviews, ask for references, and see if the contractor has a history of delivering high-quality work on time and within budget.
Warranty and Support: Choose a contractor who offers warranties on both materials and labor, ensuring you’re covered in case any issues arise post-installation.
A flat roofing contractor in Needham will help you navigate the different material options, such as rubber and TPO roofing, and advise on the best solutions based on your budget and property requirements.
4. Commercial Roof Replacement in Cambridge, MA: Ensuring Business Continuity
For businesses in Cambridge, MA, a commercial roof replacement is an important investment to ensure the continued success and safety of your operations. Roofs on commercial buildings often experience more wear and tear due to their size, frequent foot traffic, and exposure to harsh environmental factors.
Commercial Roof Replacement Process
The process of commercial roof replacement generally involves a thorough assessment of the existing roof, followed by the removal of old materials and installation of a new roofing system that meets modern building codes and performance standards. Common roofing materials for commercial properties include:
Modified Bitumen: This popular option for flat roofs is known for its durability and ability to withstand harsh weather conditions. It’s commonly used in Cambridge’s commercial buildings.
Metal Roofing: For commercial properties that need both durability and aesthetics, metal roofing is a long-lasting solution that is resistant to fire, wind, and corrosion.
Green Roofing: Some modern commercial buildings in Cambridge opt for environmentally friendly green roofs, which involve installing vegetation on the roof to improve insulation and reduce stormwater runoff.
Why Choose Professional Commercial Roof Replacement?
Expert Installation: Professional contractors in Cambridge have the expertise to ensure your new roof is installed properly, reducing the risk of leaks, water damage, and structural issues.
Compliance with Building Codes: Roof replacement in commercial properties often requires adherence to strict local building codes. Professional contractors will ensure the project meets all regulatory requirements.
Long-Term Savings: A properly installed roof will not only protect your business from the elements but also help improve energy efficiency, saving money on heating and cooling costs over time.
Conclusion
Whether you're a homeowner in Newton looking to replace your roof, a business owner in Cambridge in need of a commercial roof upgrade, or a property manager in Needham searching for an experienced flat roofing contractor, the right roofing solution can help protect your investment and provide lasting benefits. With specialized services like Flat and Rubber Roofing in Brookline MA and expert roof replacement in Newton and Cambridge, professional contractors in the Greater Boston area offer tailored solutions that meet your specific needs. Generative AI for Smart Grid Modeling - Technology Org
MIT’s Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS) has been awarded $1,365,000 in funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to support its involvement with an innovative project, “Forming the Smart Grid Deployment Consortium (SGDC) and Expanding the HILLTOP+ Platform.”
Generative AI models have far-reaching applications, including grid modeling and training algorithms for energy tech startups. Image credit: LIDS.
The grant was made available through ARC’s Appalachian Regional Initiative for Stronger Economies, which fosters regional economic transformation through multi-state collaboration.
Led by Kalyan Veeramachaneni, principal research scientist and principal investigator at LIDS’ Data to AI Group, the project will focus on creating AI-driven generative models for customer load data. Veeramachaneni and colleagues will work alongside a team of universities and organizations led by Tennessee Tech University, including collaborators across Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Tennessee, to develop and deploy smart grid modeling services through the SGDC project.
These generative models have far-reaching applications, including grid modeling and training algorithms for energy tech startups. When trained on existing data, the models create additional, realistic data that can augment limited datasets or stand in for sensitive ones. Stakeholders can then use these models to understand and plan for specific what-if scenarios far beyond what could be achieved with existing data alone. For example, generated data can predict the potential load on the grid if an additional 1,000 households were to adopt solar technologies, how that load might change throughout the day, and similar contingencies vital to future planning.
The generative AI models developed by Veeramachaneni and his team will provide inputs to modeling services based on the HILLTOP+ microgrid simulation platform, originally prototyped by MIT Lincoln Laboratory. HILLTOP+ will be used to model and test new smart grid technologies in a virtual “safe space,” providing rural electric utilities with increased confidence in deploying smart grid technologies, including utility-scale battery storage. Energy tech startups will also benefit from HILLTOP+ grid modeling services, enabling them to develop and virtually test their smart grid hardware and software products for scalability and interoperability.
The project aims to assist rural electric utilities and energy tech startups in mitigating the risks associated with deploying these new technologies. “This project is a powerful example of how generative AI can transform a sector — in this case, the energy sector,” says Veeramachaneni. “In order to be useful, generative AI technologies and their development have to be closely integrated with domain expertise. I am thrilled to be collaborating with experts in grid modeling, and working alongside them to integrate the latest and greatest from my research group and push the boundaries of these technologies.”
“This project is testament to the power of collaboration and innovation, and we look forward to working with our collaborators to drive positive change in the energy sector,” says Satish Mahajan, principal investigator for the project at Tennessee Tech and a professor of electrical and computer engineering. Tennessee Tech’s Center for Rural Innovation director, Michael Aikens, adds, “Together, we are taking significant steps towards a more sustainable and resilient future for the Appalachian region.”

Massachusetts Citizens Push Back on FCC 5G Policy and Utility Smart Meters in Light of Major Court Ruling
Mass Legislation Aims to Better Regulate the Safety of 5G and Smart Meters In an historic decision with far-reaching implications for the wireless industry, a federal court has ordered the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to explain why it ignored 11,000 pages of scientific evidence showing harm from wireless radiation. On August 13, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that the December 2019 decision by the FCC to rely only on its antiquated 1996 safety limits for human exposure to wireless radiation was “arbitrary and capricious.” The court ruled that the agency demonstrated "a complete failure to respond to comments concerning environmental harm caused by RF radiation." This landmark decision comes at a time when telecom companies are ramping up their efforts to deploy 5G in Boston and surrounding communities. Boston is one of two cities, along with Raleigh, North Carolina, that were recently added to the FCC's list of 5G 'innovation zones". Both government and citizen resistance to these attempts by industry to expose the populace to unprecedented levels of radiation using untested technology is growing. In 2020, the City of Boston filed a submission to the FCC’s 19-226 docket stating, “Boston believes that the concerns of the public are real and that the Commission has done a disservice to itself, local government, consumers, and even the wireless industry in failing to understand and respond to the broadly shared mistrust of the safety of RF emissions.” Other cities in Massachusetts such as Pittsfield are mounting strong efforts in conjunction with local government because children and adults have become seriously ill after cell towers and 5G small cells have been turned on in residential areas. The recent decision against the FCC by an appeals court has energized citizen action groups throughout the Commonwealth including Massachusetts for Safe Technology, the most prominent and active group in the state. According to Cecelia Doucette, Director, the organization "has a number of initiatives underway designed to promote better protection for MA citizens and our environment. The wireless industry is already blanketing Boston and other towns with this hazardous radiation, and children, the elderly, anyone with pre-existing conditions and pollinating insects are especially vulnerable." There are 11 sponsored bills now filed with the Massachusetts legislature this session, including one written by the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure. Senate 186 Resolve relative to disclosure of radio frequency notifications is sponsored by Senator Julian Cyr and will form a commission to look closely at wireless radiation similar to an approach taken by the New Hampshire legislature last year. Says Doucette, “New Hampshire already passed a law to investigate the health and environmental impact of 5G. They spent a year interviewing leading experts and quickly realized this isn’t just about 5G; all wireless technology emits this biologically hazardous radiation. New Hampshire’s groundbreaking final commission report documents conflicts of interest between the wireless industry and our federal agencies, and makes 15 recommendations to educate and protect the public, and our environment. Massachusetts is well poised to follow suit with S. 186.” The Utility Smart Meter Issue Another important initiative relates to the increased use of digital "smart meters" that are attached to residences by utility companies, an additional source of invisible unregulated and harmful radiation that pulses 24 x 7. Massachusetts for Safe Technology has been working with state legislators to help pass Senator Michael Moore’s S.2204 An Act relative to utilities, smart meters, and ratepayers’ rights. This bill would extend regulation to apply to all types of meters, including electric, electric solar, water and gas, installed by both municipal and investor-owned utilities. "The recent FCC court ruling now calls into question all assurances of safety by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities and utility service providers on the smart meter rollouts." noted Ms. Doucette. "The good news is that engineers can design modern-day utility systems that work effectively without bringing biological risks to homeowners, renters, and the environment. It’s time for our public servants to collaborate with industry for the use of safe, effective, energy efficient hard-wired technology. As some of the electric meter fleets are coming due for replacement, it is essential to enact legislation now that requires all categories of utility companies to provide non-radiating meters. In the short-term, rate-payers should have the right to a no-fee opt out from existing toxic digital meters." The DPU will be holding a grid modernization hearing on September 9 at 2 p.m. to review utility proposals. “In the past,” says Doucette, “the DPU relied on the word of an industry consultant for safety assurances. The science now clearly indicates utility “smart” meters are biologically harmful. A growing number of children and adults experience myriad illnesses from them including cancers, irregular heartbeats, insomnia, headaches, anxiety, depression, and more. The science from the NIH and other reputable medical authorities shows that this radiation is a carcinogen and a neurotoxin. We are counting on the DPU to protect the ratepayers and create a win-win with safe, energy efficient upgrades to the grid – without wireless radiation transmissions.” Massachusetts for Safe Technology is a public interest group working to promote the use of biologically safe and fiscally responsible technology in our homes, schools, communities and workplaces. Massachusetts for Safe Technology educates citizens, public servants, lawmakers and health care professionals on the risks of wireless radiation exposures to children, adults and our environment.

The newfound crater is among the largest yet, extending 164 feet into the frozen ground. PHOTOGRAPH BY EVGENY CHUVILIN
Excerpt from this story from National Geographic:
As they flew over the sweeping Siberian tundra, a Russian TV crew recently spotted an intriguing feature: a crater more than half a football field deep gouged from the frozen ground. Blocks of ice and dirt lay hundreds of feet away from the crater, flung from the deep scar on the surface.
This is just the latest in a series of such curious craters discovered in the Siberian Arctic, after the first was identified in 2014. Scientists believe they form from blasts of methane and carbon dioxide gas trapped within mounds of dirt and ice—a phenomenon that may be increasingly common as the climate warms. But much remains uncertain.
“We still don’t know what’s going on,” says Sue Natali, a permafrost expert at the Woodwell Climate Research Center in Falmouth, Massachusetts. “And is it going to happen somewhere else?”
Recent studies of other craters point to one likely mechanism: cryovolcanism, in which eruptions take the form of frosty mud or slush rather than fiery molten rocks. Such phenomena are well known elsewhere in our solar system, such as on Saturn’s watery moon Enceladus. But cryovolcanism is thought to be uncommon on our planet. Studying these Siberian features could provide clues to what’s happening on those far-flung worlds.
