Quick trip with our youngest baby girl to Madrid to see her favorite Taylor swift in concert for eras tour at the famous San Bernabéu stadium. We left Memorial Day Monday and came back Thursday. We stayed at ac Avenida (Marriott) in Cartagena and figured out the metro in first day and walked to find a nice local place for eggs and bacon and tomato toast with delicious cappuccino. We went back to hotel and took a nap and then went back out on metro to plaza de espana and saw a flamenco show at las tables and had ice cream. There was a great playground that Charlie loved. We had tapas - shrimp, potatoes, paella. We walked over and saw sunset and passed by the mansion palace de real and then ventured and walked to plaza de mayor. Magical first day.

Tambien, He comprado camisa y recuerdo a Calle Gran Vía. He comido en restaurante como Sacha. Costará mucho dinero porque es caro. Iré al Monasterio del Escorial y tiene una hermosa vista. Después comeré a DiverXO. Por último, haré paracaidismo a Windobona Paracaidismo Indoor Madrid. Nunca he haré paracaidismo, así que será muy divertido.

Plaza Espana, Tapas, & Finding the Crowds - Madrid, Spain
Tumblr media
Our plan for today: a little stroll up to Plaza Espana and to a couple of other sights, then lunch somewhere, before heading back to our place for a siesta. Then we were going to the Palace, since entry is FREE from 5 to 7 p.m. - it was a solid plan.
We walked up to the Plaza Espana (pictured above). Lovely plaza, there was even an outdoor cinema on the plaza. There is a rooftop view from the RIU hotel (in the background), which costs a pretty penny to go up to, there is also a glass walkway that you can experience. We decided to pass on that and continued our walk around the area. We walked back toward the Palace and visited the gardens:
Tumblr media
Hedge-lined walkways, large water features, and pine trees filled the garden area. The back of the Palacio Real de Madrid dominates the garden.
Tumblr media
Casa Gallardo - one of the few modernista buildings in Madrid - quite opulent!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruins from the San Gil Barracks - they are the remains of a convent, which became a military barrack, before being demolished. Remnants were discovered during construction on Plaza Espana (which is nearby) in 2020 and moved to this area shortly afterwards.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our next stop: The Temple of Debod. This is an ancient Egyptian temple that was relocated to Madrid as part of the International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia. Originally, it was constructed in 200 BC - it was moved to this site in 1970.
Tumblr media
From the temple, we descended to the lovely walkway along the Manzanares River - it was nice to find a little shade on our walk back toward our Airbnb. Next stop - lunch and a cold drink!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We found a perfect little sidewalk cafe - shade and a breeze! Taberna 4 Tapas - the staff was friendly, the portions were generous, the prices were reasonable, and the food was delicious. We had roasted chilis, potata bravas, and chicken (for Doug). Perfect!
Tumblr media
Viaducto de Segovia - this impressive bridge is just up the hill from our place. It is massive!
After our siesta, we headed up to the Royal Palace around 5:00 for our free entry. We found out, upon our arrival at the entrance, that we were not the only people looking to save a little money! The line to get in stretched around the building and down the street - well over 200 people were waiting to get in. We decided that we would rather pay the entrance fee tomorrow, rather than stand in line in the heat today. We wandered back toward the Catedral de Santa Maria la Real de la Almudena, which is right next door, and free. Unfortunately, there was a service going on, but they did let us wander around the perimeter of the interior of the cathedral (if we were quiet).
Tumblr media
The cathedral is massive and perched upon a hill - it, along with the palace, is visible from most of the city of Madrid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The interior is not as elaborate as some of the cathedrals we have visited, but the stained-glass windows were beautiful and the memorials on the floors caught our attention.
We were disappointed that we weren't able to do the palace, but we will add it to our agenda for tomorrow. We had a lovely day of walking up and down the hills of Madrid and getting familiar with the lay of the land. Looking forward to tomorrow.....

6 June 2002 - made it to 30 years - El Prado Museum visit plus Chamberí station and supper at Sobrino del Botín
Good morning!  Buenos Dias!
Today is Thursday 6th June 2002.  This would be the first morning that I would wake up outside of Andalusia where I was with family since the 27th May 2002.  On this day I happened to turn 30 years old.  We would visit the Museo Nacional del Prado, and the transit museum in the northeast part near the disused Chamberí railway station.  Also we would eat at the El Sobrino del Botín, which is the oldest still-operating restaurant in the world, operating even during WWII and during the Francisco Franco dictatorship.
We woke up about 7:30 AM and went downstairs to have breakfast.  Nampy Wampys were still available as a breakfast item.  We left the hotel about 9 AM, took the metro route M2 from Plaza de Espana and walked along the Paseo del Prado south to the museum.  The museum would not open until 10 AM.
The Museo del Prado was really good.  It had many paintings by Goya, El Greco, Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso and also Albrecht Dürer.  Albrecht Dürer's name in Spanish was "Alberto Durero".  I had seen most of the paintings while taking humanities class in high school.  It was a special occasion that I was able to see the paintings in person.
After the Museo del Prado, we went for a small lunch towards the Chamberí metro station.    We had to take a metro to Alonso Martinez, first from Banco de Espana to Plaza de Espana by M2 and then changed to a M10.  My farther found the M10 better than the smaller profile lines such as M1, M2, M3 and M4.  We saw the fully preserved former M1 platform of Chamberí station.  It was restored to when it was opened in 1919.  The faregates are still in use.  The M1 passes by the station but does not stop.
We went back by the M10, and my parents wanted to take a nap.  My mother however wanted about 4 PM to go on a walk to the Segovia Viaduct.  Neither my father or my brother were in the mood as the weather was crummy.  So I stepped up.  We walked past the Palacio Real de Madrid, the Royal Palace where at the time, it was the residence of Rei Juan Carlos I, who has since been succeded by his son, Felipe VI.  We walked past Plaza Mayor and back by Santo Domingo and Plaza de Espana.  It was a nice walk despite the light rain showers.
About 8 PM it was time to go for supper.  We took the metro to La Latina and walked up Calle de Toledo and went up Cava de San Miguel, and there was the Sobrino de Botín.  We entered the restaurant and then were seated at an upstairs table.  We all had gazpacho soup, and I ordered the lomo de cerdo.  It tasted good with the chimichurri sauce.  I also had a tocino de cielo.  The next time I had that was August 2017.
We somehow passed by a El Corte de Inglés, and we went inside for maybe fifteen minutes.  I found the electronic section.  There were many interesting CDs for sale, but I found the one I was looking for, "Lifelines" by A-Ha.  My collection for that season was complete.  We could go back to the hotel.
Tomorrow will be the flight home, which may take all day, and we might not arrive in San Francisco any time before the sun goes down.  Hope you will join me then!
Hasta manana y buenas noches!
