Jasmine Al Ghul
A while ago the perfect assassin was born, she was Talia's daughter but Ra didn't like the rebellious look in her eyes, they were claiming for destruction and he knew that she would do nothing but destroy the League as soon as she could.
So he rejected her as the heir, something Jazz grew to resent. When the twins Danyal and Damian were born, one was clearly weaker than the other, considering that he was born without breathing and was only saved at the last second.
This made Ra make his decision: Damian would be the heir and Danyal his shadow. But Danyal wasn't interested in killing, no matter how much he was punished for refusing, he wanted to see, to explore, to learn. Everyone could see it.
Because Damian was spending more time on heir training, Jazz devoted herself to taking care of Danyal. She tried to teach him but the boy kept refusing, failing over and over again in the most simply things, Jazz hated him.
Until she stopped hating and became fond of him, feeling a kinship because of their grandfather's rejection. Danny taught Jazz things she had never considered (love, stars, a new interest far away from training, find the meaning of life simply by living) and she made her decision: she would save the boy.
Jazz escaped with Maddie Fenton (one of Talia's students) seeing she wantes to save them too and could pass as their mother, she took Danny with her. She couldn't leave him in that place, she wouldn't forgive herself.
Of course, Damian grew to resent his younger twin for taking their sister away. Blaming him for being weak, why did Jazz leave him behind? He could be a good little brother too, he was better than Danyal! In everything!

This is a mashup of various tropes. Donât like donât read. May include
- deaged danny
- Damian x Dani (serious chaos)
- dead Jazz
- dead Sam
- dead Tucker
- not-shit parent Vlad (kinda)
- the Waynes have a strength kink
So when Danny is 18 and have safely moved out, has financial security and can go no contact with his parents he decides to tell him that heâs Phantom.
It doesnât go well.
By the time Jazz Sam and Tucker find him he is deaged to around 6. The fentonworks lab explodes.
Dani, who is 16 and was on her way to visit, came just in time to sift through the rubble and find Danny, who has only had enough memory to recognize her as his sister. She also finds three dead bodies. Jack and Maddie survived.
Scared and mourning, she takes Danny and runs to Vlad, who realizes how terrible and obsessed Jack and Maddie were and gives Dani lots of money to hide somewhere where the Jack and Maddie wouldnât dare to look- at least not for a little while.
Gotham.
So she takes Danny and changes their names.
Elliot âElleâ Jasmine Nightingale and Daniel James Nightingale, brothers and sister duo.
Dani- now Elle- still holds a grudge on Vlad, coupled with the Fenton stubbornness, she insists that she can pay rent/bills/groceries/etc. she gets an apartment in crime alley.
Because Elle doesnât want to leave a paper trail, she does a less-than-legal job.
She joins a fight rink under the name of Phantasm.
And sheâs great at it.
Shes spend the money on education for Danny, ignoring her education for the moment until Danny is old enough to join school.
Damian and Bruce were having major arguments, mostly about his violence and Damian quits being Robin and becomes Nocturne. (Bc I love that name)
He undercover a fight rink and thinks if he busts the rink Bruce will trust him enough.
He does recon and quickly realizes that one of the fighters was incredible, winning fight after fight without causing major injures to her opponents. Her name was Phantasm.
He decides that in order to find out more about her, he has to join undercover. It was only to take down the fight rink and learn more about the beautiful fighter that could bend him in half and nothing more.
Damian joins under the name of Ghoul and swipes some DNA from Elle, learns her (fake) name her (fake) backstory (family died in an heated lab explosion) but doesnât understand why a chunk of her DNA was unreadable (ghost part of her DNA)
After a bit of digging, realized she didnât attend school and the next morning Elle waked up to a letter starting that her full-ride scholarship to Gotham Academy has be approved (GA offers a afterschool care for students with younger siblings)
Elle never applied and is confused but accepts after Vlad, Ember, and Kitty convinced her.
She coincidentally is put in the most of the same classes as Damian, who she eventually crushes on befriends because heâs hot sheâs suspicious of his faint and funky ecto signature.
So shenanigans include (not in this order and are optional)
- GALA where Vald announces her as Vlad Co heiress and the are invited to the gala and get a bit sus of Elle bc Vlad is sus
- JASON AS ELLEâS NEIGHBOR is actively trying to set up/prevent Damian and Elle getting together (either one works, as long as the plans fail comically)
- PRINCESS ELLE OF YHE INFINITE RELAMS + SUMMONING
- TALIA ATTEMPTING TO KIDNAP DANNY because he looked like Bruce/she wants another son and Elle absolutely beating her 7 different ways to Sunday and Talia telling Damian that she approves of her
- ELLE DESTABILIZING/GETTING REALLY SICK and Danny calls Damian in a panic because he knows Elle trusts him even if she wonât admit it
- ELLE GETS SAVED BY NOCTURNE and Elle instantly clocks him as Damian bc of his ecto signature and rips him a new one because look how vigilantism turned out for Danny
- THE BATFAM THINKING DANNY IS THE CLONE OF ELLE and investigating Cadmus, who could have ties to the GIW somehow
- ELLE BECOMING A SORT OF SERIAL KILLER to protect Danny (check the comments @emerald-fox-93 linked it :)))
- DASH BECOMING A GCPD COP AND HAVING TO ARREST ELLE because she killed someone who tried to kidnap Danny. Damian picks her up from the station after she calls him.
- PAULINA BECAME A LAYWER FOR WE bc I saw a post like that and it was fire. She eventually fights for the removal of the AEA (anti ecto acts)
- THE OTHER BATS GENUINELY BECOMING CONCERNED and began to think that Elle is mind-controlling Damian because he keeps brushing them off to hang out with her
- DAN JOINING THE JLA and calling up Elle when he needs her help and Damian being there and being like âwtf??â
Jack and Maddie eventually find Danny and Elle and Elle vanishes. Danny- who Elle hid when the Fentons stormed the apartment- calls Damian sobbing and pleading for him to find Elle because the bad people are going to hurt her.
Damian, knowing little to nothing about her situation, basically goes ballistic trying to find her. The family, titans, and the League gets involved because one 15 year old doesnât realize he has a massive crush on his classmate. He calls up that every favors he is owed (and some that is not) so now basically almost the entire LOA is after a 15 year old girl who was kidnapped by the two mad scientists who are committing around 16 wars crimes.
They find her after the ghosts sheâs Still in contact with realize she hasnât texted in a while and theyâll help Damian on his manhunt
And because Elle is the high princess, the entire ghost zone is ready to help Damian get their princess/queen/regent back
Jack and Maddie never stood a chance.
Any more ideas?? Please tag me and comment đ :))

Even though it's been years, I still think itâs disappointing that EAH didnât get to explore the concept of destiny more. How peopleâs destinies are tied to the storybook of legends, when their stories technically start, how destiny can be changed, etc. I have some headcanons though, and the bare bones of a fanfic Iâll probably never get around to writing:
Stories begin when someone (i.e. Milton Grimm) reads them out from the Storybook of Legends.Â
Once you sign the book you commit to the story 100%, when the story begins you are that character, that role, you are no longer yourself. It's like you are possessed.
The Storybook of Legends can be edited. Over the centuries people have made changes to their stories, which accounts for the different versions of any given story. No one dared to change too many details, just in case anyone became suspicious.Â
Briar learns about this secret from her mother who actually edited her own story (Sun, Moon and Talia) so that Briar would have a happier ending.Â
Briar told some of the others and they made a plan to get the Storybook of Legends to edit or rewrite their own stories. Raven has to contend with the fact she actually doesnât know precisely what she wants to do and has to decide her future quickly.
Their plan is foiled when Grimm stops them. He opens the book and begins to read. Everyone is transported and are now in their story roles.Â
The ones like Maddie and Kitty who can hear the narrators are able to break out of the trance and go help the others. Brooke Page tells them that in order to break out of the story they have to break key elements of their stories. In Ravenâs case its the Mirror.Â
The students are able to break out of their stories and they get to choose their own destinies.Â

I'm dying of laughter from the thought of Damian and Jack 'Cool-Aid' Fenton interaction.
A prompt I saw a while ago popped into my head. For context, Talia is older than normal due to Pit Water useage, and on the timeline Jack is a little bit older than Bruce.
Long story short, Talia went to a America for College and cultural immersion training or a long term op or something as an exchange student. She goes to college with Jack Fenton for undergrad degrees, they have a year whirlwind romance, Talia into Jack because he's so open and expressive and she's never had that.
It comes to an end as it has to, but they stay in touch, letters every year or so often. Talia talks about Bruce and Jack about meeting Maddie in his post grad ecto degree studies, etc time passes, Jack marries Maddie.
They try for kids and find out that Maddie is infertile, Jack asks Talia for an egg and she agrees. Jazz is born, Talia is named godmother. Years pass and they repeat with Danny.
The reason why I think this can work here? Replace Maddie's sister Aunt Alicia with Talia under a cover name. Because in the episode, Alicia has been married at least once and has been divorced from her ex-husband for least a decade. Bruce is that you? Plus Jack and Bruce are VERY similar physically. Batman is taller and broader than Superman in a lot of comics runs.
Because after all. Why. The absolute hell does Aunt "Alicia" need to be reached via parachute, if it's not Talia in a mock town filled with League of Assassins loyal to her, just so she gets to see the Fentons.
Obviously the anniversary episode doesn't happen. Instead, we have a SUPER EXCITED Jack Fenton calling Talia to talk about the kid they've adopted and how great he is. So Fenton family go parachuting in to Spittoon Arkansas to see 'Aunt Alicia'.
Surprise Damian. Meet your 'cousins'.
As it is most often Danny who is mistaken for Damian and kidnapped, here is the reverse.
Jack, out of mistake, kidnapped Damian, as he thought it was Danny. Danny was sleeping in the Fenton Family GAV, so only in 70% on the way home. He woke up and saw his father kidnapping a boy with them.
In Amity Park
Maddie was first angry that Jack kidnapped this poor boy!
Maddie:" Jack, Danny's eyes are blue."
Jack:" But Danny's eyes turn green sometimes!"
Maddie:" True. Welcome to the family!"
Damian to himself:" So this is how my siblings ended up with my father."
Damian kind of liked it here with the mad scientists; they are fun. And Jazz seems to be trying to help him with his problems? And already accepted him as new baby brother.
#bruce finally finds Damian and Damian is trying to hug all the Fenton's at once: father can we keep them?#they thought they adopted Damian but he uno reversed them#dc x dp#dc x dp crossover#Talia knew Jack years ago#She donated an egg because of lab accident#Maddie carried them but her eggs were not viable#Talia is the godmother and pretends to be Aunt Alicia#It's a cover the Fentons and Talia organised#Jack and Maddie know that Talias father is crazy. Not much else#Damian flips his shit when they meet 'Aunt Alicia'

Looking for a Romance this Valentineâs Day?
So, every publication and blogger is putting out a Valentineâs Day romance list, and we are nothing if not followers. Weâve assembled a large list (33 Books) of a mix of traditionally and indie published books. All of the books on this list are ones weâve read and feel comfortable recommending. And they all fit the definition of romance - a story where the relationship is central to the overall plot and features a happy for now or happily every after ending.
Weâre going to break this down into several categories because not everyone reads Regency romances (but we are going to start there).
Regency Romance
These are books set between 1795-1837. While the Regency itself was only from 1811-1820 most people use these dates including Wikipedia. This was honestly one of the hardest for us to narrow down, mostly because itâs the dominant genre in traditionally published romance -- even Contemporary doesnât hold a candle to Regency right now.
Sweet Disorder - Rose Lerner - M/F Romance (Steamy) - Election hijinks ensue when the local election hinges on who the widowed wife of a newspaper printer marries. Other Notes: Plus-Sized Heroine, Family Drama, Disabled Characters, Everyday People Falling in Love, Marginalized Author (Jewish).
The Baroness Affair - Jean Wilde - M/M/F Romance (Steamy) - A desperate noblewoman enlists the help of a male courtesan to help her get pregnant... no itâs not what you think. Other Notes: Equal Triad Polyamory, Period Appropriate Homophobia, LBGT Romance, Family Drama.
How To Start a Scandal - Madeline Martin - M/F Romance (Steamy) - A wallflower and secret society reporter reconnects with the Earl Next Door whoâs recently returned from the war. Other Notes: Plus-Sized Heroine, Family Drama, Positive Mental Illness Portrayal, Cute Plot Animals.
Project Duchess - Sabrina Jeffries - M/F Romance (Steamy) - A duke returns to his family after the mysterious death of his stepfather, yet another duke, only to be enchanted by a woman who has a connection to the last person to see his stepfather alive. Other Notes: Older Heroine (the whole series features these), Romantic Suspense Series, family drama. Iâm really enjoying the whole series and itâs worth a read.
The Rakess - Scarlett Peckham - M/F Romance (Steamy) - This is a love it or hate it kind of book that flips so many of the conventional romance tropes on its ear. It features a hard-drinking, hard-smoking, highly sexual woman who authors progressive literature and causes a scandal just by living her life meeting up with a mild-mannered reputation conscious Scottish Architect with two small children. Even the cover flips the script on the classic clinch cover. I loved it. A lot people didnât. Other notes: Period appropriate sexism/hypocrisy/etc., CW: alcoholism, neighbors to lovers, adorable plot moppets.
Paranormal Romance
These are romances that feature a fantastical element. This can be anything from vampires to shifters to time travel. These also will often be series which may or may not continue with the same relationship throughout several books.
Hot Ghost - Annika Martin - M/F Romance (Steamy) - A waitress finds love with the ghost who haunts the pier near her familyâs restaurant. Other Notes: Major Character Death (Itâs a Ghost Romance...), Everyday People Falling in Love, Novella.
Accepting Fate - Deanna Chase - M/F Romance (Steamy) - Fresh from a bad break up, a woman meets her soulmate at an art gallery opening. Together they have to work through their trauma and find out if they can be happy together. Other Notes: Childhood trauma, Fire Fighter Romance, Soulmates, Artists.
Gretel - Niamh Murphy - F/F Romance (Steamy) - A retelling of the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel with a very interesting twist. Other Notes: Age-Gap Romance, Novella.
One Shade of Grey - Monica Corwin - M/F Romance (Steamy) - Dorian Grey, yes that one, has a bit of a problem. He keeps seeing a woman who he thinks is the reincarnation of his lost love. But is she really? Or is he going insane? Other Notes: Positive Portrayal of Mental Illness, Classical Story Retelling, Billionaire Romance, Immortality
Tangled in Time - Barbara Longley - M/F Romance (Steamy) - Cursed to see spirits, Regan is approached by the spirit of a cursed Irish warrior. Now they must work together to lift his curse and fall in love along the way. Other Notes: Fae Romance, Time Travel Romance, Ghost Romance.
Hunger Pangs: True Love Bites - Joy Demorra - M/M/F Romance (Steamy or Fluffy) - A vampire, a werewolf, and a magic user walk into a plot to end the world. Of course they have to fall in love along the way. Other Notes: Vampire Romance, Werewolf Romance, Magic User Romance, LBGT Fantasy Romance, Bisexual Romance, Postive Mental Illness representation, Marginalized Author (Disabled, Queer, Neurodivergent).
Erotic Romance
These are books where the sex is as much a part of the romance as the rest of the story. The plots here tend to be thinner, but theyâre still present and important. This is not smut for smutâs sake. The relationship is important too. All of these are going to rate high on the steam.
After Hours - Lynda Aicher - M/F Romance - An executive assistant accidentally observes an after hours orgy in one of the boardrooms. Rather than be repulsed, sheâs aroused. And up for more. Other Notes: Workplace Romance, Voyeurism, Exhibitionism, Mild BDSM, Boss/Subordinate Relationship.
Loving Maddie from A to Z - Kelly Jamison - M/M/F Romance - An outwardly happy couple looks to add something to their relationship by inviting their friend into their home and bed. Other Notes: Polyamory, BDSM, Big City Romance.
Ever After - Eden French - M/M/F Romance - An erotic modern retelling of the Cinderella fairy tale featuring billionaires, celebrities, and lots of hot sex. Other Notes: Interracial Romance, Polyamory, Billionaire Romance, CW: Child Abuse.
Test Drive - N.S. Johnson - M/F Romance - A so-called good girl finds that sheâs really not when she falls for the leader of a street racing crew. Other Notes: Polyamory, CW: Infidelity, Interracial Romance, Reverse Harem, Recreational Drug Use, Author of Color.
Other Historical Romance
These are romances set outside of the Regency but not during contemporary periods. A lot of old school romances tend to be this because medieval was big then. But it also includes everything up to 1990 too... Yeah... I know... I feel old.
Let It Shine - Alyssa Cole - M/F Romance (Steamy) - Set during the civil rights movement, this story follows two young people struggling to find their voice and love amidst the turmoil of the 1960s. Other Notes: Interracial Romance, Period Appropriate Racism, Period Appropriate Anti-Semitism, Author of Color, Sports Romance, Novella.
In Pursuit Of... - Courtney Milan - M/M Romance (Steamy) - Set immediately after the American War for Independence it features a British soldier falling in love with a Black man who fought for the American side. Other Notes: Interracial Romance, Romantic Comedy, period appropriate racism, author of color, Novella.
Bringing Down the Duke - Evie Dunmore - M/F Romance (Steamy) - A rare female scholar tries to keep her scholarship going while also crusading for the rights of women in Victorian England. Other Notes: Alpha Hero, Clueless Heroine.
Contemporary Romance
These romances are set in the last 25 years and run the gamut of tropes.
Get a Life, Chloe Brown - Talia Hibbert - M/F Romance (Steamy) - Sick of living her life wrapped in tissue paper, Chloe Brown sets off to live a little. And to do that, she needs the help of her buildingâs manager. Other Notes: Plus-Sized Heroine, Interracial Romance, Disabled Characters, Positive Portrayal of Mental Illness, Marginalized Author (Black). As a note the sequel Take a Hint, Dani Brown is just as good and features a Bisexual Woman of Color.
Beg, Borrow, or Steal - Susie Tate - M/F Romance (Fluffy) - A medical student has to juggle the needs of being a single mother, a student, and paying the bills. And if that means sheâs got to take off her clothes to do that, thatâs what sheâs going to do. Too bad she keeps falling asleep in class. Other Notes: No Sex (No really), But also Super sex positive, Student/Teacher Relationship, Adorable Plot Moppet.
Soft Hands - Ariel Bishop - M/M Romance (Steamy) - A professional Hockey Player ends up falling for the team trainer and massage therapist. Other Notes: Bisexual Rep, Sports Romance, Interracial Romance.
The Year We Fell Down - Sarina Bowen - M/F Romance (Steamy) - Two people whoâve suffered from accidents which have left them disabled find each other at a Harvard Expy. While one of the characters only has a temporary disability (broken leg) it still fucking counts. Other Notes: New Adult Romance, Disabled characters, Sports Romance, College Romance.
Small Town Romance
A subgenre of Contemporary Romance, these are books set in a small town and often the stakes tend to be pretty low. They can run the range of no-sex to lots of steam. They are also often VERY WHITE. While many are set in America, they can also be set elsewhere with Australia and the British Isles being the most common other settings.
Falling for Her Brotherâs Best Friend - Noelle Adams - M/F Romance (Steamy) - Who doesnât love a small town romance featuring characters that used to be childhood friends becoming more? Other Notes: New Adult Romance.
The Last One - Tawdra Kandle - M/F Romance (Steamy) - Meghan, an art student, and Sam, a farmer, and how they meet in small-town Georgia when Meghan comes to teach art over the summer to the kids in townâŚand ends up staying with Sam and his family. Other Notes: Alpha Male Hero.
If Wishes Were Horses - Caitlyn Lynch - M/F Romance (Steamy) - When an Aussie woman inherits partial ownership in a horse ranch in Ireland, sparks fly. Other Notes: Novella, Irish Romance.
Old School Romance
These are romances that were written before the rise of indie publishing where white men had the power and it shows. These are what people point to when they reduce romance novels to just âbodice rippersâ but even then they werenât just that. BTW none of these books feature Fabio so suck it!
Skye OâMalley - Bertrice Small - M/F Romance (Steamy) - Daughter of a small Irish lord, this book follows Skye through her life and romances across England, Ireland, and even Algeria. Itâs wild and all over the place and is not your typical romance novel. It ends on a HEA but there is a JOURNEY. But gods itâs one of my old-school faves. Other Notes: Major Character Death. Non-Con, Pirates, Interracial Romance, Historical Domain Characters, This is not your typical romance. I like the whole series... but thatâs a me thing.
The Traveling Matchmaker Series - Marion Chesney/M.C Beaton - M/F Romance (Fluffy) - A housekeeper inherits a large sum of money and decides to use it to travel about England. Along the way, she makes matches for the other passengers of the stagecoach sheâs traveling on while getting into all sorts of adventures. This series is pure fluff and I love it. Other Notes: Period appropriate xenophobia, Age Gap Romance.
Remembrance - Jude Deveraux - M/F Romance (Steamy) - A romance novelist discovers that the reason she hasnât found love is because of an issue with her past life. So she decides to do something about it... only to find itâs just the very tip of the story. Other Notes: Time Travel Romance, Past Lives, Meta... so very meta.
Desire in Disguise - Rebecca Brandewyne - M/F Romance (Steamy) - Look this is set during the French Revolution and features duelling (quite literally) pirates. This is a wild ride and itâs so old school it hurts. Other Notes: Alpha hero, mistaken identity, enemies to lovers, spies, pirates, But oh so many problematic tropes. This looks to be out of print... so check your local library.
Gentle Warrior - Julie Garwood - M/F Romance (Steamy) - Set right after the Norman Invasion of England, this features a Norman Lord who was granted an Anglo-Saxon wife and all of the drama that comes with. Note... this is the first Romance Novel I ever read.. My mother bought it for me when it was newish -- in 1987. Other Notes: CW: Rape, Arranged Marriage, Non-conventionally Attractive Hero.
Books that check all of the boxes of Romance but arenât Labeled as Romance because Sexism.
Romance isnât about sex. Thereâs lots of books with explicit sex in them that arenât Romance and several with a strong romantic relationship that drives the plot which ends happily and satisfying. But sexism is a thing and so here we are.
The Princess Bride - William Goldman - M/F Romance (Fluffy) - Youâve probably seen the movie. The book is also fun. And since the romance is central to the plot AND the ending is a happy one (especially in the movie) it qualifies.
The Hunger Games Trilogy - Suzanne Collins - M/F Romance (Fluffy) - Look who would have thought that in a book about kids killing each other and the violence of war that Romance would play that big of a role? But it does. And it is. And itâs important.
Katherine - Anya Seton - M/F Romance (Fluffy) - This could feasibly go into Old School Romance, but apparently the publishers have decided to downplay the actual romance and try to sell this as literature. It follows the real-life Romance between Katherine Swineford and the Duke of Lancaster.Â
Did we leave off any of your favorites? Itâs probably because we havenât read them! We always like recs, especially featuring marginalized authors or main characters with marginalized identities.
If you like this kind of thing, consider leaving us a tip in our Ko-Fi!

maddyâs movie monologues: Sex Appeal
i realized just how much i talk about/recommend movies here so why not give it a name. i also recommend books and shows but maddyâs movie monologues has a better ring to it
Sex Appeal is a coming of age/comedy on hulu directed by talia osteen. i would probâs give it 4/5 for if i liked it in general but 5/5 for the storyline and how interesting it is
the main character, avery, is a senior at the top of her class and preparing for âstemconâ, a competition for stem that she dubs âher version of promâ. when the prompt for this years competition is to create an app that solves a personal issue she decides to make an app on how to have good sex. yup you read that correctly. she enlists the help of her long time friend, larson, to help her practice for actual sex. this is about all i can say without spoiling it but now iâll talk about what makes it different from other movies like it
first off, representaion. the main character has three moms, YES THREE MOMS. it shows that open marriages/polyamorous relationships are still worthy of being parents and can do just as well as anyone else. two of her moms live in a separate house but it isnât made into some big deal and they still are amazing co-parents. there are also lgbt students shown and they discuss same sex intimacy and how itâs different from hetero sex.
the breaking of stereotypes. from the beginning we see the typical hollywood stereotypes broken. avery isnât bullied or made fun of cause sheâs smart cause that really doesnât happen. and when she goes to her peers for advice on sex the cheerleader character hasnât actually had sex and doesnât want to which is so different from normal movies. then we have the artsy beautiful girl that averyâs friend, larson, has a crush on. we donât learn too much about her until the end so she seems like the cliche one dimmensional love interest but at the end, when avery points this out, she explains that she does have her own interests and her own life.
the ending. this is gonna be extreme spoilers so if you donât want that stop reading now. normally in a situation like this movie, girl and boy have no strings attached sex, feelings always come up and the end up together happily ever after, but this wasnât the case. larson calls avery out on her selfishness and disregard for othersâ feelings and when she tries to win him back, he explains that there personalities wouldnât work together and even tho he did love her at one point, heâs moved on and is doing better. instead of avery blaming him or trying one more time and winning him back, she realizes he was right and that she should have been more considerate. even though she knows thereâs no way to win him back, she still values him as a friend and helps him get the girl heâs liked since the beginning, because she wants him to be happy even if itâs not with her. i love that it ended with them not together because they wouldnât have been a good romantic match, but theyâre great friends. and it ends happy! not with avery secretly resenting the other girl or crying at home, they both are having fun and learned from this situation.
overall, it is a teen comedy/coming of age, so if you know you donât like those you probably wonât like this. but it is a great step forward for hollywood and a fun movie that breaks the mold

Ask from a user who wants to remain anonymous:
(anonymous, thanks!)
I. am. so. tired. of so many romance novels reusing the same jobs/careers over and over. Can you recommend a romance where at least one of the leads has a unique job?
It absolutely can be frustrating to read the same careers over and over and over again. I mean there are actual categories featuring billionaires (businessmen), Sports Players, Policeman/Fireman, Law Enforcement, Military, Doctors/Medical Personnel, Celebrities, Politicians, Musicians, teachers/educators, thief/mafia/criminals, and lawyers. Weâre also expanding this to take out things like assistants, governesses, students, authors, courtesan/prostitute/brothel owner, chefs, food service, milliners (historical only), ship captain (historical), gambling hell/casino owners (historical), servants (historical), bakers, pirates, royalty/nobility, cowboys, farmers, and ranchers. So hereâs some romances where one or more leads has a âuniqueâ career.
Also for the sake of our sanity, weâre limiting this to Contemporary and Historical and not YA. LOL
Contemporary

this is a pretty straightforward request, so i wonât go on forever at the beginning and iâll spare u all instead!! iâm looking for a friend group for rooney that sheâs known since pre-school or elementary school. she grew up in mangata, and she was a pretty outgoing kid growing up and would have forced all of them to hang out with her. these should all be people whoâve lived here for all or most of their lives, whoâve grown up in the same classes and on the same playground as rooney. theyâre from all different walks of life, classes, backgrounds (for instance, rooney is pretty squarely lower middle class but rly tries to hide it and always has) and are completely different, but their shared history is what keeps them together. theyâre diehard for each other, loyal to a fault, and even if they had different friends in school growing up, they always had each other regardless.
obviously, thatâs not to say that they never had drama. obviously, being friends for so long, theyâve had their fair share of breakups and makeups and dramatic shit going on. iâm not against romantic history at all, but iâd really like the main focus of this whole thing to be the platonic friendship they all share!! so regardless of whether romantic things have happened between members of the group, they all know that their friendship reigns supreme over any of that bullshit!!!
idk what else to say here except to scream about my feelings and hopes and expectations for this!! as simple as the groupâs premise is, theyâre super super strong and always there for each other. think going to visit each other in college, holding someoneâs hair back or patting their back when they get too drunk and throw up, venmoing each other $20 for no reason, little sweet things in general?? rooney is going through a pretty rough time rn and so sheâs really dependent on these people to talk to her all the time and come over and help her pick the perfect thirst trap to post on her insta story so!!
thatâs pretty much it but i canât wait to scream and cry about this and have a really cool and genuine platonic friend group!! đ if youâre interested #replytweet here or msg me on discord which is morg#3278
OK THIS IS FULL THANKS FOR PLAYING FRIENDS

Unnatural Affairs. Chapter 21: The Banishment.
(Ally + Lyn + Michael)
Lyn.
âYouâre going to training camp, arenât cha, Lyn?â
I looked over at Matt who was hanging off the lane rope, water dripping off his beard. Andrew looked at me quizzically as well as they waited for my answer.
âProbably, yeah,â I said with a shrug. Iâd totally forgotten about it, honestly. Iâve been so busy with all this spirit hunting junk that training camp just slipped my mind.
âGood. Kerry and I are going too.â Matt licked his lips. âSo, you, Loryn, Kerry, Maddie, Thom, Ollie, and Will. Oh, and me!â
âIâm going to,â said Emma. âSoâs Robin and Tams.â
âThatâs not too bad,â I commented. âYou only got like 7 people last year. You nearly got half the team. Wait, is Gunner not going?â
Andrew shook his head. âMe and Gunner are gonna go home together this year. I think he needs it.â
I looked over at Gunner, who just dove in the water for his heat. We were doing practice races today to work on our spirits and diving techniques. We got out of the pool since they started and walked over to the benches, where we sat and waited for it to be our turn again.
I rested my head against the wall and closed my eyes, thinking about all the shit we learned the last few days. I couldnât believe that old prof was the killer. I didnât like the guy, but I didnât think he was capable of murder. Of course, not all killers looked like killers. Thatâs how Ted Bundy and Paul Bernardo got away with so many killings before they were caught.
We hadnât told the police yet because we literally had no concrete evidence that he did it. We really only were going off what weâve seen and what ghosts have told us and done to us. We couldnât really say much in our defence. Whatever. Tomorrow we were going to get rid of the monstrous Fredrik Moore with the help of Katherine.
Ally told us this two days ago. Then she causally mentioned that she nearly got killed by Kinkly when she went to go speak to the ghost residing in the art building. I swear to God, between Ally and Michael, I was going to have aneurysm. Who the hell causally mentions they nearly died through a text message?? It was a little exhausting to keep up with, truthfully. I only understood so little, yet I was expected to keep up with all the crazy. I was definitely ready for it to be over.
Katherine had sent Ally a list of things that we needed for the ceremony tomorrow, or whatever you wanted to call it. I guess it was basic ghost hunting stuff like salt, iron or silver, special amulets. I didnât really get it, but Michael was more than happy to find all that for us. Where he got it from, I didnât really want to know.
âWhatâs on your mind, Lyn?â
Lorynâs voice pulled me out of my thoughts. I blinked back into focus. âJust some stuff.â
âHm.â Loryn sat down next to me. âI canât wait until this semester is over. I feel like once Christmas goes by, weâll reset and refocus.â
âI agree.â
I watched Thom glance at Loryn as he walked up to the block. I wasnât the most observant person on the planet, but I was starting to notice the looks he was giving her. I wondered if he had a crush on her or something. The thought of that brought a cheeky grin to my face.
âWhat are you doing for winter break, by the by?â
I shrugged. âSuffer until my flight, I guess.â
Loryn rubbed her hands together nervously. âDid you want to stay over at my place? We could leave together.â
âLorynâŚâ I stared at my friend, emotion building up in my chest. She was watching me with this stupid soppy look on her face too. âI canât just impose on your family, especially not during the holidays.â
âAnd I canât let my best friend go back to a place that makes her miserable,â countered Loryn. âCâmon, dad is totally okay with it. I just want you to think about for real, okay?â
âI will, I promise.â
She reached over and hugged me, and I hugged back. It really did mean a lot to me that she even asked. I didnât know what I was going to do for winter break. I thought Iâd just hang around here until then, but who knows, maybe the ghost problem was still going to be a thing then. I broke off the hug when I realized it was my turn to go up again. I patted Loryn on the head and headed over.

Michael.
I was so excited to see the list Ally had sent. I knew exactly where to get those things! As soon as my horrid math course ended, I raced down to the Dreaming Mythic. When I got there, Talia was in today. She smiled at me as I pulled off my hat and shoved it in my pocket.
âMr. Yamamoto! Itâs been a while since Iâve seen you last.â
âYup!â I walked straight over to where the bags of salt were. âIâm here to stock up today.â
âI figured you were,â she said softly as she drifted over. âKatherine told me that you asked her for help.â
I froze. I smiled guiltily at her as I reached for the salts. âYeaâ I did. I hope thatâs okay with you. I just got really excited when I saw her reading the spell book.â I did feel bad that I asked her like that, it probably caught her so off guard.
âKatherine is an adult,â said Talia wistfully. âIf she wants to help, then she can make that decision herself. I just hope that you children are going to be safe.â
I nodded as I poked around the amulets. âI hope so too. I think that if we get hurt again, Lyn might kill us. And trust me, she doesnât look that strong but thatâs only cuz sheâs wearing sweaters right now. She could crush my head if she wanted to. Plus, Iâm pretty sure Iâm scarred for life now because of this, so I donât really need to add physio on top of therapy.â
Talia walked into the back room as I continued to poke around. I wasnât really sure where I was going to get any silver from, but maybe the weird antique store down the road had something. These small towns and their wacky stores, huh? You could always find the weirdest stuff. This whole town had proven to be p r e t t y i n t e r e s t i n g so far.
I walked over to the counter with an armload of things. One could never be too careful when it came to fighting a giant ghost monster that could totally crush you with one hand. Never. I dumped my stuff and tapped my fingers against the counter as I waited for Talia to return. I wasnât in a rush, so I didnât mind waiting.
When she came back out, she was carrying a bundle in her arms. I looked at it quizzically as she set it on the counter delicately. My jaw fell open when I saw what it was.
A gleaming silver blade.
âThis belonged to my mother, who got it from her father and so on,â said Talia as she ran her fingers on the flat part of the blade. âIt served them well. I would like it if you took this to protect yourself. Itâs much more efficient than a baseball bat.â
âHowâŚ?â I was dumbfounded.
âMr. Yamamoto, Iâm aware of how the minds of you people work,â she said, her eyes twinkling. âAlso, I was a student once too, in a house full of girls. We all had our own weapons of choice in case anyone ever tried to break in.â
I ran my hand over my head. âI feel bad if any person ever tried to, after seeing this guy.â
She slid it back into the sheath and wrapped it back up. She put everything in a paper bag and handed it all to me. âPlease, be careful. Those are dark forces youâre dealing with. AndâŚâ she paused, her face thoughtful. âNever mind. Take care, Michael.â
âThank you, Talia.â I squeezed the bag to my chest tightly. It meant so much to me that sheâs been so awesome this whole time. I canât think of anyone else who would go to such crazy lengths to help a practical stranger. She really was a great person, no joke.
I smiled one last time before leaving the store. I couldnât help but feel the nerves starting to creep in. It was going to be really dangerous, we knew that. Itâs been dangerous this whole time. I think only when Ally spoke to Amelia was the only time she didnât get hurt. These ghosts mean business, and their business is to kill.
In some weird way though, we had to do finish it. We were the ones who started this whole thing, really. If we hadnât bothered to dig around more, then we wouldnât feel the sense of responsibility to help them all move on. No one else could do this job but us. Sure, it was terrifying and stupid, but Iâm happy in a way. Iâm happy that weâre going to make a difference. Especially since all the victims were people that thought no one cared about this. But there were people who cared, somewhere out there. I mean, hell, we cared!
I understood their anger, though. Iâve been there. People making offhand comments about me behind my back. Being a biracial kid in Victoria hadnât been terrible, but there were times that I was all too happy to forget about. Iâve been pulled over more times than I care to talk about because of the colour of my skin. There were times were people asked me if I was visiting people from home, as if my family didnât live here in Canada. I understood all that. Thatâs why it was so important to me to help them out. Because someone had to.
So yeah, I was nervous. I was nervous because there was so much more at stake than just stopping Kinkly from killing again. It was about telling these people that they mattered. Because for the love of fucking God, they do.

Lyn.
When I got back to my room, I was surprised to see a package lying on my bed.
Nura would pick up my mail for me sometimes because she was a sweet and wonderful person. I didnât order anything for myself, so I wasnât sure where it came from. With a confused frown, I dropped my bag to the floor, grabbed the package, and opened it up.
A letter fell out, landing gently on my bed. I picked it up, surprised to see Oliviaâs name scrawled on the front of it. Feeling even more confused now, I opened the letter to see what she had to say.
Lyn,
I just wanted to apologize again for making you come home for Thanksgiving. It was wrong of me to make you promise something like that when you needed a ride to the hospital. I still donât know the real reason why you needed to go, but hopefully one day youâll be able to share the truth with me.
Itâs a little early for Christmas, but I got you a gift. Itâs not much, and maybe youâll hate it. What you do with them is your choice, and Iâll be none the wiser on what you decide. Speaking of, if you would like, Travis and I would be happy for you to come and stay for a while. I know youâre probably flying off to Florida or wherever again for your winter training camp. I just wanted to let you know the offer is there for you to take if you wish.
Anyway, I hope that youâve been well and that all your finals go as you expect. You always give everything 110%, so I know youâll do amazing.
With warmest love and regards,
Olivia.
I sat heavily on the bed, my emotions conflicted. I reread the letter a few more times, making sure I didnât miss a single thing. It absolutely meant the world to me that Olivia went the extra mile to apologize for making me go back there. She didnât have to, but she did.
I reached for the rest of the package and pulled out the box that was inside. It was a shoe box for Converse, and when I opened it, a brand-new brand of blue-green high-tops rested inside. I pulled them gently and examined them. They were my size exactly, and there was another note inside the box.
I know you loved those black ones you have, but since they were bloody, I thought these would be a good replacement.
They were gorgeous. I loved them already. I wouldnât be able to wear them for while because of the weather, but Olivia made an awesome choice.
I thought back to Lorynâs offer. Now I had two places to go for the holidays, meaning that I wouldnât be spending them alone, regardless of my choice. I felt warmth blooming in my chest. Maybe later tonight would end horribly for us, but for now I was content to just sit here and be thankful for the people in my life.

Ally.
December 1st.
If someone had asked me at the beginning of the term what I would be doing 9 days before the first day of exams, I probably would have said pretending that relearning the entire course wasnât stressing me out at all. Instead, I was going to go back to the swim teamâs locker room for the third time this term to hopefully help a ghost move on from this plane of existence. You know, a typical Wednesday.
I stared up at the clouds as I sat outside on one of the benches scattered around campus. It was a really peaceful day. It was cold, and the wood was wet on my legs, but still peaceful.
The nerves I felt were not as bad as I thought they would be. Maybe because weâve already been through so much already. Scarred, bruised, hurt, but alive. We lucked out twice already, and I know weâll do it again a third time. If everything went according to our plan, it should be fine.
I laughed to myself. When has anything gone according to our plans?
Still, I dropped my head back, so it was dangling over the bench, weâll be okay. I have to believe that. I donât want anything to happen to them. I wonât let anything happen to them.
I wasnât a physical fighter, but I was going to try my best to make sure we all made it out of here okay. I owed Michael and Lyn that much. I dragged them into this wild world, and I was going to be the ones to make sure they got out of it alive.
âYouâre doing your thinking face.â
I smiled as I sat up properly. âHey. Did you get everything?â
âI totally did,â said Michael as he sat next to me. âNow, donât divert the convo. What cha thinking about?â
âJust everything, honestly.â I tucked my hands under my armpits. âYou know my brain is always running, it never stops.â
âAinât that the truth,â he chuckled.
We sat there as I rested my head against him. He put his arm around my shoulders. We took comfort in each otherâs warmth. The steady rhythm of his breathing added to the calm I was feeling. There was something about sitting with a friend on a cold winter day that was under appreciated.
The day slowly waned away as we sat silently. I donât know what Michael was thinking about, but it was probably about tonight. I could feel the anxiety emitting off of him. He wasnât biting his nail, but he was bouncing his leg away from me quite a bit. I reached down and squeezed his hand in comfort, causing him to look my way. I smiled at him and he returned the gesture.
âDo you really think weâll be okay?â His voice was small.
âI do,â I said firmly.
He nodded slowly, staring off again. âDo you think it was a mistake to ask someone else to help? I feel more guilty the more I think about it.â
I frowned in thought. âIâm not sure, honestly. I do think that she would have said no if she really was against the idea, though. Sheâs got spirit, I think.â
âOkay.â
âHey,â I looked up at him. âMichael, I know you. Donât beat yourself up over this. Weâll make sure nothing happens, alright?â
Michael closed his eyes tightly. âAlright. I justâŚI donât know if I would ever forgive myself if someone got hurt because of me.â
A flashback of Michael smacking into the wall and the blood flying from Lynâs arm shot through my head. I swallowed thickly as guilt rested heavy in my stomach and said, âYeah, I get that.â
The sun dipped below the skyline as it started to get dark. It was only 6:00 now, and we had to wait until closing. Stupid winter and shorter days. It was starting to get too cold for me to stick around much longer, so I gently pushed away from Michael and stood up, my body shivering from the loss of contact. I fiddled with my glasses anxiously.
âIâm going to head back to my room for a bit,â I said. âSee you soon.â
âSee you soon,â echoed Michael.
XXX
âHey, Ally?â The RA leaned against my doorway. âThereâs someone waiting for you outside.â
I glanced at Sarah before pushing myself away from my desk. The RA walked all the way to the door with me before leaving without saying a word. I pushed open the door and saw Lyn standing there, her cheeks pink from the cold.
âHey! Why didnât you just text me?â
âLeft my phone in my room,â she said with a shrug. âI donât really want it to get ruined.â
I stepped out of the way to let her in. She gave me an appreciative smile as she came in. I wasnât sure where we should go, since Sarah was still in our room. I decided on the common area and led Lyn that way.
After a quick look around, I walked in once I saw it was empty. I sat down on one of the sagging couches and Lyn plopped down besides me. She slipped her hat off and ran her hand over her hair to smooth it down. She took my hand into hers, which was freezing, and gave it a quick kiss.
âAre you feeling nervous?â she asked, her eyes searching.
âIâm definitely feeling it, yeah.â
âThatâs good,â Lyn laughed. âIâm scared shitless.â
I nodded in understanding. âYouâre not alone in that feeling.â
Lyn ran her free hand over her face before squeezing her ear. âThatâs great to hear. Like seriously, you do all this crazy shit, and it always amazes me. Well, it makes me want to kill you first, but then Iâm amazed. I donât know how you can keep it up.â
I mulled over that for a few minutes before saying quietly, âBecause no one else can. I meanâŚyeah, I totally scared. I literally think Iâm going to die each time we go out, or that I was so stupid for doing this, or for dragging you guys into this. ButâŚâ I frowned, scrubbing a hand against my eye, âsomeone has to do this. I would feel terrible if someone else died while I sat by and did nothing about it, you know?â
Lyn looked thoughtful as she nodded. She didnât say anything else as she released my hand, instead slipping her arm around me and taking my other hand back. She kissed the top of my head and held me close. I closed my eyes, taking comfort in her presence.
To be perfectly honest, I never would have done this alone. It was only because I had Lyn and Michael that I was able to do this. Not even counting the close encounters, it was really traumatizing to see how someone died. They have been here for me this whole time, and for that, Iâm forever grateful. Sure, weâll all be in therapy because it, probably. But at least it wonât be alone. At least someone I know will always understand what Iâm going through, on some level. And hopefully after this was all done, we could figure out a way to stop Kinkly once and for all. Then it would all be over, and we can go back to being normal students. Students who were worried about their exams, not about whether theyâll be haunted that evening while studying in the library.
We sat together like this until it was time to go. My stomach lurched as we stood up, the realization of what we were about to do catching up with me. Lyn squeezed my hand tightly, her jaw set determinately. I could see the fear dancing in her eyes, the way she kept cracking her fingers, but she was ready to go. When she caught me staring, she winked at me with an easy smirk.
âHey, weâre the Spook Searchers, this is what we do,â she said jokingly. âWe search for spooks.â
âI donât think dealing with monsters and witches is part of the description,â I pointed out.
She rolled her eyes as she held the door open for me. Startling, the wind was ranging outside. Despites my protests, Lyn pushed my back to my room. She was firmly insisting (read: leaving no room for argument) that I put on a pair of pants. According to her, every time weâve gone there, weâve had to flee outside and that I wasnât going to be freezing my ass off just for the sake of my style. She had a point, but that didnât mean I agreed with her. However, I sullenly complied because it did make sense.
Finally, we left Lukas and made a painful walk to the Athletic Centre, hopefully for the last time. The wind was biting into my face. It felt like tiny little cuts were opening on my skin. The walk only lasted 5ish minutes, but it sure as hell felt longer than that. Michael and Katherine were there when we showed up.
Michael grinned when he saw us, though I could see the tightness in his face. Katherine wasnât even attempting to smile, instead glaring at us moodily. I gave Michael a quick hug while I nodded to her. She just stared back. Yay, this was going to be really fun.
Lyn patted Michael on the back and gave Katherine a nod of acknowledgement as she pushed the door open. Her friend was sitting at the desk and looked up as we walked over. Apparently, she had spoken to him the other day and told him this huge lie about how she wanted to sneak us into the pool for a secret party. She told him it was totally safe and that sheâd lock up afterwards. Her ability to come up with believable lies was really amusing to me. First a camping trip gone wrong now this.
âJust make sure you put everything back to where it belongs,â he said to her nervously as he handed over the key.
âI totally will!â said Lyn in a bubble-gum tone. âThanks so much for doing this for me, Hassan.â
âYou owe me one.â
She gave him a big hug. âYup! Have a good night, buddy.â
A smile flickered onto his face. âYeah, yeah, you too, Lyn.â
Lyn cheerfully waved to him as he left the building. After she was sure he was gone, she quickly locked the main doors. Her shoulders were tense with stress as she came back over to the three of us.
âThis better go well,â she said as she pocketed the keys.
âI think it will!â said Michael with a fist pump. âI have a really good feeling about it this time. Plus, look at all this awesome stuff I have!â He held his bag open for us to look inside. I saw bags of salts, some knives, and amulets. Katherine stuck her hand in there and pulled out the necklaces.
âI need you guys to put this on,â she said as she handed one to each of us. Michael readily put his on while Lyn stared at hers skeptically. I understand why, since the last time we relied on jewelry it didnât do much for us. I took mine from Katherine and slipped it on, the weight of it feeling a little strange. Lyn finally shrugged and put hers on as well.
Katherine stuck her hand into her coat pocket and pulled out a small object. I felt my brows raise in surprise as she flicked it open, revealing the blade inside. I winced as she sliced her finger open. Michaelâs face went pale, and Lyn frowned, her ears lighting up. Katherine hissed as she pressed the bloody digit to the center of her amulet, and it started to glow brightly. She muttered something under her breath and the brightness dimmed, the necklace reflecting only a warm glow.
âWhoâs next?â she asked with her hand outstretched.
Michael tentatively stuck his hand out. Katherine took his hand gently, before quickly nicking the skin open. Michaelâs face scrunched slightly in discomfort but otherwise he said nothing. She pressed her finger on top of his before placing it on the amulet. The same light show happened before it dimmed down.
I was about to lift my hand when Lyn quickly thrusted hers out. Katherine glanced up at her before cutting her thumb open, causing Lyn to flinch. She had her eyes closed the whole time Katherine worked silently. After it was over, she sucked on the thumb as if that would help with the pain.
Finally, I was up, and I gave her my hand. Katherineâs eyes searched mine before she took my hand into hers. Her grip was surprisingly gentle as she looked at my fingers. She grabbed my ring finger and sliced the knife against the skin. I felt the tingling in my face from the pain as she pressed our fingers together. I only just noticed now that she used a different finger for each of us, as three of her fingers dripped with blood. Once she was done with me, she quickly stepped away and dug out a clean thing of gauze with her other hand. She ripped the thing open with her free hand and grimaced as she pressed her fingers into it.
âHere, let me help,â said Lyn. She reached over the desk and grabbed the first aid kit. She quickly wiped up the blood and wrapped each of them in a small gauze.
âThanks,â muttered Katherine.
Michael fingered his amulet with a curious look. âSoâŚwhat was the point of that?â
âProtection,â said Katherine. âYour blood mixed with a witchâs should be a much better protection against anything that might try to take your body from you. It will do little against physical harm, so you still gotta be careful.â
âGotcha.â Michael smiled at me. âShould we head down, then?â
âIf weâre all ready,â I said with a smile of my own. I certainly didnât feel happy, but I didnât want all of us to be freaking out, so I put on a brave face. I did a quick look around and when everyone nodded in agreement, we headed down.
The hall lights flickered on as we walked down the stairs. The pipes were moaning overhead as they settled. I could hear the fans working through the pool doors as we walked by. Michael handed Lyn something that was wrapped up in a bundle, causing her to look very confused.
âWhatâs this?â
âSomething I think suits you best,â he said with a wink. I could see the trembling of his hands but he hid them behind his back so we wouldnât see his fear.
She pulled the rope off the bundle and let the cloth fall to the floor. She gasped as she held out the sword in her hand. I was surprised to see a weapon like that too. I looked over at Michael with wide eyes, who just gave me a shaky thumbs up. Katherine was eyeing the weapon with a strange look before she looked away, wrapping her arms around herself.
âWe should keep moving,â I said, my voice echoing into the darkness.
Our footsteps sounded incredibly loud as we approached the locker room. When we stood in front of it, Katherine frowned in trepidation. She poked around for a bit before sighing deeply through her nose.
âThis is it, then?â she asked, looking at us.
Lyn nodded. âYeah. This is where the big fucking angry ghost in. The other one is apparently in the mirrors where the bathroom and showers are.â
ââKay.â Katherine shrugged her bag off. âThis is going to be a very dangerous thing. Once I start, heâll fight against me. Heâll probably attack us. I wouldnât be surprised if the other ghosts around the area get involved. Are you all ready for that?â
I swallowed thickly and nodded. âWe know what we signed up.â Ugh, my voice definitely cracked there a few times.
Katherine looked at me for several long seconds before turning away. âAlright. Just give me a few minutes to get ready then.â
Only a few minutes before shit hit the fan, oh boy. Those were going to be a long few minutes.
XXX
Michael.
Watching Katherine work was something weird for sure.
She sat down on the floor and poured a bag of her own salt around her in a protective ring. Next, she set up a few black and red candles around her. She pushed her bangs out of her eyes as she muttered to herself quietly. I wanted to ask what she was doing but I thought leaving her alone was the right move to make. I went over to where the others were leaning against the wall instead.
Lyn looked really pale as she watched Katherine. Her face was devoid of any showing emotion, but I could tell by the way she kept tugging at her ear that she was really nervous. Ally was biting her lip as she fiddled with the zipper of her jacket. She attempted to give me a smile when I stood next to her, but it came out looking grim.
âWeâre going to be fine, Ally,â I said. I believed it, too. I had to.
She nodded slowly, her eyes unsure. âI think so too,â her voice was so quiet. âItâs just what happens after that Iâm scared about.â
âWhattya mean?â I tilted my head.
âWith Kinkly,â her voice cracked at the end. âSure, weâre helping Fredrik here and thatâs really awesome. But what about the actual murderer? We donât exactly have tangible evidence that says âhey, this guy is the killer!ââ
âWeâll cross that bridge when we get there.â We both were startled by Lynâs sudden jump into the conversation. She tore her eyes away from Katherine and gave us a tight smile. âWeâve already done so many crazy things together, whatâs one more? Iâm sure that weâll figure it out once we have time to think about it. But first, we gotta focus on this, you know?â
We both nodded in agreement. My heart was thudding rapidly in my chest suddenly. The temperature in the hallway started to drop and I looked over at Katherine. Her face was screwed up in concentration as she continued to mumble to herself. Her gaze lingered up and when I caught her eye, she nodded towards the door.
It was time.
Trying my very best to swallow my growing fear, I held out one bag of salt in one hand and an iron knife in the other. Lyn drew the sword smoothly from its scabbard and held it tightly in both hands, her knuckles white. Ally took a deep breath as she held onto her own knife. She reached for the door handle, but it ripped open before she could even touch it.
Fredrik in his monstrous form bellowed at us in the cramped space. Suddenly, I felt the floor shifting beneath my feet as the area expanded. I stumbled a little before getting my footing again. I wasnât sure what happened, but this wasnât the locker room anymore. It was, but it wasnât.
The whole space was distorted. The lockers looked like they were curved and wider than they usually were. The tiles on the floor were red with blood and the walls moved as if they were breathing. The whole area felt alive. Fredrik stood in the middle of it, his mouth drooling bloody saliva. Fiona stood next to him, her expression dark and hard to read.
âYou shouldnât have come here,â she said grimly. âYouâve made a horrible mistake.â
Her face twisted horribly as her own body began to transform. My pulse was pounding in my ears and my hands shook violently. My eyes flickered to Katherine, who was chanting loudly now, her eyes glowing brightly. All we had to do was make sure nothing bad happened to her while she finished.
Fredrik lurched forward, his powerful legs carrying him forward. We scattered away from the attack. He whirled and immediately went towards Katherine. My legs felt like lead. I tried to move but I couldnât. I looked down and saw that my legs were trapped in a gory cast. I yelled in surprise, stabbing at it with the knife. Katherine was in danger, and I was helpless to do anything for her.
I looked up when I heard Fredrik scream. Lyn stood in front of Katherine, her eyes wide in fear but she held her ground. Fredrikâs face was dripping with fresh blood and the sword glistened with blood.
âThatâs for scarring me, asshole!â Lyn swung the blade heavily, causing Fredrik to draw back.
Quickly I cut myself out of the gore cast and was about to run over to where they were when Lyn pointed over. âGo to Ally! Iâve got this!â
That sounded like a lie, but I wasnât going to argue once I saw that Fiona was swiping at Ally, who was trapped waist deep in a gory hold. I ripped open one of the bags of salt I had and threw it directly at Fiona. She shrieked as she tore at her face. Pieces of flesh fell to the ground with a sickening wet sound as the blood welled on her face. The salt that landed on Allyâs gory prison started to dissolve and she started tearing chunks off with her own knife.
âWhat is this stuff!?â Ally scrambled back so we were side to side.
âI have no idea, but it felt veryâŚfleshy,â I said with a heavy swallow. I was not going to be sick here.
Ally looked sick at the thought but nodded. âOkay. Okay. We need to stop them from getting to Kat.â
I nodded in agreement. I handed Ally a bag of salt. She looked around before kneeling down and ran the knife through a puddle of something liquid. She stuck the knife in the bag and pulled it back out, the blade now covered in salt. Geez, that was so quick thinking. I was about to do the same thing when Fiona screamed at us.
âYOU ARE GOING TO SUFFER FOR THAT, HUMAN. I WILL KILL YOU!â Her voice was distorted, sounding like it was being layered with something else. Her back ripped open with a wet sound as a second pair of bloody arms grew from her back. Her head twisted with a vicious crack as her jaw opened widely like a snakeâs, only it didnât seem to have a stopping point. Ally and I stepped away in fear.
We ran away from her attacks, each punch pounding into the floor with a fleshy sound. The floor kept trying to get a hold of us with its gory prison. Bones grew from the floor like tree roots, and we had to dodge them so we didnât trip. Fiona was howling behind us like wounded animal. I could see the pain in Allyâs face as she tried her best to keep moving forward. But no matter how far we ran, it was like we couldnât get away.
I barely felt fear as we rolled away from a smash of her claws. My body was running on instinct to survive. There were nearly no thoughts in my head besides run, survive, get away, dodge. Fiona picked something up that suspiciously looked like a body without a head and threw it at us. I shouted as we fell to the floor. Hands with rotting flesh shot through the floor and grabbed at us, keeping us in place. I struggled against their slimy grip, sweat dripping down my face. Fiona leisurely approached us, her twisted features manic.
âYou should have kept your nose of this, Ally,â she said quietly. I could see the pain in her eyes, the agony she was feeling. She raised one hand, claws ready to tear into us.
âIâm sorry.â
Her eyes widened in shock. I twisted around to look at Ally, whoâs face looked utterly heartbroken.
âIâm sorry,â she repeated. âIâm sorry that youâve been forced to become this thing, Fiona. Iâm sorry that they gave up on you and your brother so easily. I mean it, and I meant it last time. What happened to you two was tragic and itâs so horrible that no one tried harder. I canât imagine the pain youâre going through, I really canât. B-but,â there were tears streaming down her face, âI know you donât want to do this. I-I saw how David was being controlled.â
Tears sprung to my own eyes as Fiona hesitated. There was a battle of conflict playing out on her face. Ally closed her eyes and took a shuddering breath. âYou are in control here, Fiona.â
Fionaâs face twisted as she howled. She brought down both arms.
XXX
Lyn.
The sword was heavy in my hands as I swung it.
I thought it would be like a baseball bat, but man was I wrong. This thing was wearing me down so quickly. I could hear Katherine behind me, continuing with the spell. The hair on the back of my neck and arms were standing on end as the pressure around us continued to increase.
There was blood dripping off the sword where I had sliced Fredrik. My hands were covered in it from the splash back. My chest was rising and falling heavily as I panted. My whole body was shaking from the effort of keeping her safe. My heart was racing from a mix of adrenaline and fear. My stomach felt like it was cramping shut.
I was so worried about Ally and Michael too. I saw Michael run off to go help Ally, but I havenât seen them since. I really had no idea what was going on and it was freaking me out big time. This whole place looked like a fucked-up rejection from a horror movie or something. The walls moved away from you each time you took a step. The floor fucking looked like it was made of human bodies. If I stayed still for too long, rotten hands reach up and try to grab me, or some gory entity does.
Fredrik watched me carefully, circling around. I sluggishly followed him with my eyes, careful to have the sword pointed at him the whole time. He was waiting for me to let my guard down. That wasnât going to happen.
Katherine gasped loudly behind me, causing me to look back. Fredrik screeched as he launched himself at me. I swore viciously as I tried to defend myself. I really didnât want another scar to match.
âStep back and swing upwards.â A jolt of panic shot through my whole system.
I did as the voice said, and Fredrikâs claw missed my face by half an inch. I swung upwards and caught him by the chin, Blood sprayed all over me and I blinked it out of my eyes as I stumbled back.
âDuck, then thrust forward.â
Again, I did as it said. The sound of his claws rushing by filled me with dread as I took a huge step forward. I jabbed the blade into his belly. Fredrik shrieked in pain as he doubled over, stumbling away from us.
âGood job. Stay close to the witch now.â
âWho are you?â I asked into the wind.
âSomeone trying to help you, darling. I know weâve never talked before, but you have to trust me.â
I shook my head as I stepped back. I stopped next to Katherine, who was breathing heavily. She pushed sweaty bangs from her face and looked up at me, her face going pale as she took in my appearance. I felt disgusting, so I could only imagine what I looked like.
âAre you finished?â I asked, kneeling down next to her.
Katherine nodded quickly. âIt should only take a minute for the effects to kick in now.â
âThank God,â I muttered darkly.
âAre you hurt?â
I glanced at my hands and shrugged. âI really couldnât tell ya, honestly.â
âThatâsâŚthatâs fair.â She pulled her knees to her chest, her eyes wide with fear. âThis place is so fucked. Is this what youâve been dealing with the whole time?â
I shook my head. âMostly just insane shit happening in the locker rooms. Though I took a lovely blood shower once,â I said sarcastically.
Katherine opened her mouth to say something when there was a huge roar that shook both of us to the core. Fredrik was writhing on the floor, clawing at his skin. Blood gushed from his self-mutilation. My stomach lurched from the display, and I looked away. But when I heard him howling, I found myself looking once more. Layers of flesh peeled away from his body. Bones became exposed as they crumbled away. Organs were exposed as they melted away into nothing.
âWhatâs happening to him?â I asked, my voice thick with fear.
âThe monster is dying,â Katherine said flatly. âThe human soul is becoming exposed.â
I watched in horror at the remaining parts of what was Fredrik dissolve into a frothy liquid. From the remains stood a boy, not much older than Ally or me. He looked scared and confused as he looked around. When he saw us, he tripped over the bones of the monster as he tried to walk over. He stopped a couple feet short of us and fell to his knees.
âYou saved me,â he cried. âThank you.â
âYouâre welcome,â said Katherine softly. âI hope you have a better time in the Shadow Lands, Fredrik Moore. I know this journey hasnât been easy for you.â
He wiped at his eyes and nodded. âI hope so. IsâŚis my sister here?â
Katherine lifted her hand and pointed. Fredrik looked over and gasped when he saw his sister standing over Ally and Michael. I felt fear coarse through my veins as I saw her bring down her own claws. I screamed out their names as I tried to get to my feet. Tears left paths down my blood covered face as I stumbled over to where they were.
The plume of dust dissipated, revealing a very stunned Ally and Michael but otherwise unharmed. I collapsed next to them, grabbing a hand from each of them and trying to control my crying.
âWeâre okay,â coughed Ally. Her eyes widened as she took in my appearance. âAre you okay?!â
I nodded as I squeezed her hand. âI think so,â I said with a hiccup.
Michael sat up, his face pale and ashy looking. âIâm okay too, in case you forgot I was here.â He said it jokingly, but I could hear how weak his voice sounded.
âIâm glad youâre okay too,â I sniffled as I gave his hand a good squeeze.
I stiffened when I saw Fiona approached us. She was no longer a monstrous version of herself, instead looking like a young woman. There were tears dripping down her face as she bowed her head. Fredrik put his arm around her and rested his head on hers.
âThank you, AllyâŚfor saving me. He was controlling me, and I couldnât stop myself from hurting you.â Fiona wiped at her face.
Ally smiled tiredly. âYouâre welcome. Iâm just glad you are together again.â
Fiona grabbed Fredrikâs hand tightly as she looked around. Both her and her brother looked confused as to where we were. That was not a good sign. Even though my body was physically exhausted, the panic that was settling into my bones was causing me to feel twitchy.
Then we heard the slow clapping.
XXX
Ally.
I looked around, but I couldnât place where the clapping was coming from. Fiona and Fredrik both looked terrified. Michael sat up straighter as he looked around as well. Lynâs pupils were wide with fear. Katherine stood wearily next to us.
âYou need to get out of here,â whispered Fiona. âHeâs coming.â
The whispers of âheâs comingâ echoed all around us. I shakily stood up. Lyn and Michael did the same. We instinctually stepped closer to each other. Lyn reached out and even pulled Katherine a bit closer.
âI canât believe you managed to pull that off, Alexandra,â said his voice all around.
âPulled what off?â I called out, hoping my voice sounded stronger than it felt.
There was an unsettling chuckle. âGetting rid of me from Fredrik. That required a lot of power. I didnât think youâd be able to find someone to pull it off. But you proved me wrong.â
âShow yourself, you monster!â I yelled.
The earth shook underneath our feet violently. Fiona and Fredrik ran away from our group, disappearing from sight. The ground split open to reveal beating organs beneath our feet. Michael finally couldnât hold it in anymore and threw up. Lyn looked sick too, but she managed to keep it down. Katherine couldnât tear her eyes away from the horror that we were standing on. When there was another chuckle, the ground shook again.
âIâve been here the whole time, Alexandra. This is my body youâre standing on, after all.â
Shocked coloured my face. How was that even possible? I stepped away from the seeping wounds at my feet, trying to make sense of it all.
Then he showed himself.
Robert Kinkly looked just as he always did. Round glasses, frumpy sweater with crazy wispy silver hair. He smiled at us and gave a polite clap for us. Lyn gritted her teeth and hefted the sword back up. Michael held the knife high as well, his hand steady despite his fear. Katherine looked petrified as she stepped slightly behind us. I didnât blame her at all. All I wanted to do was ran away and hide away forever.
âHonestly, I do have to ask, howâd you figure it all out?â He tilted his head in that way that he always did when he asked us questions in class.
âIâm not telling you,â I spat out. God, I was feeling a lot braver than I actually was.
He blinked owlishly. âHuh. Well, I suppose it doesnât matter. Iâll just have to kill you three and make away with all that research you have. It will be tragic, three students losing their lives just before exams. But the roads are icy at this time of year, after all.â
âYouâre a fucking psycho,â snarled Lyn. âI canât believe you murdered all those people.â
âLanguage, Lyndsey. There is no reason for you to be speaking to me that way,â he scolded coolly. âBesides, I had to kill them. It was the only way for me to survive.â
âBut why?â I cried out. âYou died! I donât understand how youâre even here!â
Kinkly held his hand up. âPatience, Alexandra. To be honest, Iâm not quite sure myself. I remember when I died, and I remember begging for a second chance. The next thing I knew, I was alive and well. The only issue I ran into was my flesh began to rot away on me. However, I soon discovered I could stay alive so long as I could sacrifice someone elseâs life in exchange for mine. And wellâŚâ he spread his hands out with a cold grin. âIt was obvious who I was going to choose.â
âButâŚâ Michaelâs voice cracked with emotion. âHow could you do that to innocent people? Amelia and the Moore siblings didnât deserve that. Dahlia and Jamieson didnât deserve that.â
Kinkly laughed with a shake of his head. âI didnât kill Dahlia. She was already here when I died. But the others? Nobody cared when they were alive, and nobody cared when they died. Really, I may have been the way to swing the axe, but I wasnât the one who killed them. Society did.â
I felt anger bubble in my chest as I took a step forward. âThatâs a lie you tell yourself. These people, they had live. They had futures. You are the one who took that away from them, no one else!â
âPlease, stop with the dramatics already,â he said with an eyeroll. âI told you so many times to keep to yourself and mind your own business. Really, your own death is on your hands. Shame, too. I thought you had potential.â His face twisted into something horrible. The grin was too large and stretched out, like it belonged on someone elseâs face. His teeth were just slightly too pointed to be natural. He laughed loudly and the floor shook once more.
âLie down and die for me, ALEXANDRA HOLLAND, LYNDSEY HART, AND MICHAEL YAMAMOTO.â
My whole body shook as panic shot through my brain. It was bad for a ghost to know your full name. It was really, really bad. But I didnât really know why, I just knew it was. I could feel the power behind those words. I closed my eyes, ready for the end.

@nxghtshaded said  â you are a tolerable drunk. â
It wasnât even the weekend yet, but Hank couldnât wait one more day to lose himself in a couple of beers and a game of darts with the other staff member. Between the tension regarding Maddie, and the fact that Jean had outright refused further treatment, he didnât think he could last one more day sober.Â
Hank laughs at Taliaâs musing, grinning over at her with a beer to his lips. The door to the recreation room is shut, and itâs not like students were allowed in here past midnight but he still cast a wary glance at it every time he heard movement in the hallway. âTolerable? I like to think Iâm more than tolerable, Talia.â He hums, taking another long draw before raising a brow at her. âI like to think Iâm downright pleasant.â

When I moved to the State of Illinois in 2008 to teach art at Southern Illinois University, the then governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich was at the tail-end of a destructive leadership ride and about to be sentenced to 14 years in prison on corruption charges. George W. Bush was in his last year of a presidency that had declared a never-ending war on America that to this day shows no signs of peace anywhere, and I learned that women were not included in the American constitution - needing three more States to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, and Illinois was one of them. As a Canadian who had managed to keep politics to the very edges of my life living in docile Canada, I was now deeply embedded in what felt like a political nightmare while teaching for a state university where political decisions decided whether students could get financial aide to enable them to study and whether I would have a pension, among other things. The last four years in Illinois I directed the University Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies program. One of the first such programs in the US, this program steadily grew over 30 some years but also systematically lost its funding. After my retirement I was not replaced and have yet to hear that the directorship position will be replaced, as administration is no longer willing to make it a paid position.
In my last semester in the US in 2009 I traveled to an artist residency in Egypt where I gave a presentation on the history of feminist art in North American. I shared with a shocked Egyptian audience of artists and art professors that the USA constitution did not hold equal rights for women. I facilitated a Nap-In and a Trance-Based Inquiry workshop in Alexandria to a receptive group of Egyptian art students and faculty, some of whom had been part of the Arab Spring uprising. On arriving back in Illinois, just after International Womenâs Day, I was contacted by the communication director of my university asking if state funding had been given to the Nap-in and art installation that had just been installed at the university. F_X News had picked up the story and would run two slamming segments on F_X and Friends condemning and ridiculing the university and students for taking part in Nap-Ins, creating and sharing art expressing their dreams for diversity. The university was responding to the accusation that tax payers money had been given to enable students to nap for course credit (see earlier blog on this).Â
America thus transformed me into a âslow activistâ and a reluctant American citizen (I obtained my US citizenship while living there through my dad, who was American Canadian). I now am a Canadian American artist, researcher and teacher with renewed commitment to assisting all people to access their inner wisdom and connectedness to themselves, their community, their home place and the more than human worlds through radically slowed-down-creation-generating-processes like Nap-Ins and Trance-Based Inquiry practices.
One year after leaving the US I am invited back by a former art student (thank you Natalie Pivoney!) to exhibit art and offer workshops at the 8th annual Going Dutch Festival in Elgin, Illinois (just outside of Chicago). This festival began as a festival that would alternate each year showcasing the creative dance work of men and women, hence its name. As it turned out, after the first year the men left the organizing team and so it has continued as a womenâs event, supported by some amazing men but run and mostly attended by generous, passionate and articulate women. Partaking in this festival offered me the opportunity to return to the Illinois with the Dream Scroll and to offer a Nap-In (one of the Gestare Art Collectiveâs creative practices)Â and Trance workshop under radically different circumstances - in a supportive women-led arts festival.
I spent my 5 days in Elgin meeting energized, creative and smart women, most young women in their twenties, passionate about sharing their experiences and love for others with the world through their art practices. I attended a beautiful slow breath and movement workshop with Emily Navarra and Eric SmackDab of The Movement Kitchen and became part of a âBody Choir.â I attended the premier screening of a GD commissioned dance film by Talia Koylass entitled âThe Good Christianâ and had conversations with the dancers and choreographer about the importance of young women reclaiming their spiritual paths within the traditional Black Christian church community. I witnessed so many different dance forms, so many different bodies choreographed in powerful and tender expressive motion. Among them Rosie Trumpâs With or Without Dance performers who carried me through the piece Fill in the Blank, transforming ordinary chairs into moving fluid architectural magic. I experienced critically informed performance artists such as conceptual dream performers Maddy Rager and Scott Crandall of Thanks You So Much For Coming who caused me to laugh and think simultaneously, and Brandy A. Rogers an artist teaching and story-telling through words and song. It was through Brandyâs performance that I âgotâ how Black Americans have decolonized the white Christian God from the God as judge and fear God story that I grew up with in the Missouri Lutheran church to the God is Love story. A powerful appropriation of the white Christian religion within a community who understands from their years of on-going oppression in the world of white supremacy that love trumps all and so love is truly God. Best of all though was being able to talk with many of these young artists and choreographers, discovering their passion and desire to deepen and extend their work and messages for their country and the world. Some joined me in my workshops and opened themselves up to the dangerous space of slowness, going inside to find and activate forgotten or repressed dreams and visions. To re-meet themselves in realms beyond cultural and political constraints through reclaiming trance and dream as a human storehouse of self-authorizing awareness and knowing.
And the final best aspect of the festival is how the connections generated in this festival will reverberate, some silently, slowly, others loudly and quickly into the future. A future that concurrently finds the current US president signaling that he will commute the sentence of Blagojevich, and the same week finding the State of Illinois approving the Equal Rights Amendment, 36 years late. May the future bring that one more needed State ERA approval forward (Nevada showed up with theirs last year) to enable the United States of America constitution to take the political blinders off and recognize and celebrate half of its population, try going dutch, and possibly begin the slide towards the recovery and healing of a country in much pain. A country so desperately in need of the love-based, gift-based, compassionate democracy that is visible in the lives and creative work of the many Americans I met in Elgin, Illinois. I return home to Canada feeling love for America and its people, for my sisters and brothers who are working hard to de-hypnotize their country from the escalating world-traumatizing nightmare we are all living, playing, struggling, working and creating within.

Delaware may let students choose their race, gender without parental consent

Delawareâs policy lets kids choose gender
State officials say policy will protect vulnerable student population.
A proposal that would let students in Delaware as young as 5 choose their own race and gender-identity â without approval from their parents â has sparked a bitter battle in the First State.Â
On one side are parents who say they want a more welcoming climate for their transgender or non-binary children. On the other side are parents who say the proposal infringes on their basic parental rights.
Under Regulation 225, schools would be required to provide access to facilities and activities that are consistent with a studentâs gender identityâregardless of the childâs sex at birth. That includes bathrooms, locker rooms, team sports and adhering to the childâs preferred name. Under the proposal, students could also choose their own race.
What has rankled some parents is that the new regulation does not require schools to inform parents of the childâs decision. Instead, the policy advises administrators to assess the childâs well-being before disclosing the information to the childâs parents.
While a growing number of states are imposing rules to protect transgender students, Delawareâs proposed rules go further â letting a child decide, even if the parent disagrees with the decision.
âThe regulation isnât about keeping a secret, itâs about whatâs in the best interest of the child,â said Mark Purpura, president of Equality Delaware. âThe reality is there are children living in fear who do not feel comfortable coming out to their parents as gay or transgender.â
States that have some protections for harassment and/or bullying of students based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Â (Human Rights Campaign)
But some say this is yet another example of government overreach. They say parents should be involved in making such a critical decision involving their children.
âI would be livid if the school allowed my daughter to make such a significant decision without me,â said Terri Hodges, president of the Delaware PTA and committee member.
Hodges said she does not oppose the regulation but feels that alienating parents is not the right way to carry it out.
âI want to protect children,â she said, âbut we canât pick and choose when to engage parents.â
The stateâs proposal drew more than 11,000 public comments in the form of letters, emails and online submissionsâ the majority opposing the new rule.
If approved, the regulation would protect 19 characteristicsâprotections that expert David Cohen, professor of law at Drexel University, said are not represented in the current federal anti-discrimination policy.
âTitle IX does not explicitly cover gender,â said Cohen. âAll it talks about is sex discrimination â and not every court, administrator or administration interprets gender identity as sex.â
Governor John Carneyâs office released the following statement: âThis regulation is about providing guidance that will help school districts ensure that all children feel safe and comfortable at school. It was drafted by a development team that included parents, educators, school district leaders, students, and school board members from across the state.â
Delawareâs governor, John Carney, felt strongly that more could be done to protect students from bullying and discrimination, and in 2017 urged the DDOE to enact a policy.
But last month at the committeeâs final public meeting, a crowd of more than 250 people packed the auditorium of Delaware Technical Community College to express their opposition.
Delaware State Rep. Rich Collins, R-Millsboro, said the proposed regulation is onerous, excessive and confusing. He said the current anti-discrimination policy is concise and efficient, and replacing it with a multi-page regulation is a distraction.
âThis is taking our eye off the ball,â Collins said. âWe have one school that has a 3-percent math proficiency and there are issues educating our kids [across the state].â
But Andrea Rashbaum, a parent of a transgender child, said parents canât expect a child to learn if they donât feel safe.
Andrea Rashbaum with her daughter, Maddie, and her husband.
âWe have to take these worries off their plates,â Rashbaum said. âSimilar to how hungry children canât perform, a child who feels unheard and misunderstood canât focus on reading or math scores.â
Rashbaum believes that a state regulation would put every child on an even playing field.
âRight now gender and race identification are handled on a school-by-school basis,â Rashbaum said. âOne school will help a child grow to have dignity and the other less educated school [in the same district] can squash a childâs self-worth.â
If approved, Delaware would be among 18 states and the District of Columbia who have implemented anti-harassment regulations based on gender identification and sexual orientation.
Delaware is one of the first states to draft a proposal to explicitly acknowledge gender identification in schools as a protected characteristic, and violators â itâs unclear if would target teachers or administrators â could be prosecuted.
After a public hearing period, the Department of Education will approve or deny the regulation.
