Janey Godley
Scottish actor, writer and comedian (1961–2024)
Janey Godley (born Jane Godley Currie; 20 January 1961 – 2 November 2024) was a Scottish stand-up comedian, actress, writer and political activist. She began her stand-up career in 1994, and won various awards for her comedy in the 2000s.
Quick Facts Born, Died ...
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she made a series of voice over clips of politicians and other well known personalities. The following year, she was dropped from a pantomime performance of Beauty and the Beast after a series of controversial historical tweets emerged, for which Godley later apologised. She was later diagnosed with ovarian cancer, from which she died in 2024.
Early life
Godley was born in Campsie, East Dunbartonshire, on 20 January 1961. The youngest of four children born to Annie and Jim Currie, she was raised on Kenmore Street in Shettleston, a district in the East End of Glasgow, and attended Eastbank Academy. Living in poverty, which was rife in the East End during that time, Godley left school at 16 with no qualifications. Her parents were alcoholics and her mother was also addicted to tranquilisers. Her uncle molested her and her sister for a number of years during their childhoods, crimes for which he was charged in 1993, being sentenced to two years in prison in 1996.
Career
Godley began her stand-up career in 1994 using her middle name as both the Storrie and Currie families had disappointed her and changed her name from Jane Godley Storrie to Janey Godley the following year. She won an award for the "Best Show Concept" at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival in 2002 and the "Spirit of the Festival" in 2006. She published her autobiography Handstands in the Dark in 2005. In 2006, she was a finalist for the Edinburgh Evening Times' "Scotswoman of the Year" award. In 2002, 2006, 2008, and 2009, she was nominated as "Best International Guest" by the New Zealand Comedy Guild. Her TV appearances include River City, Sam Delaney's News Thing, The Alex Salmond Show, Have I Got News for You, and Traces, and she appeared in the film Wild Rose. Godley often made spoof voice-overs of videos.
In 2020, Godley wrote and starred in a series of short films titled Alone, about a recently widowed housewife whose abusive husband has died of COVID-19, as part of the National Theatre of Scotland's Scenes for Survival webseries. In December 2020, the Royal Society of Edinburgh commended Godley's voice-overs of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's COVID-19 briefings for helping engage the public with the warnings. That year, she won the Scots Language Award's Speaker of the Year Award. In September 2021, tweets Godley had sent in 2011 were publicised by The Daily Beast, leading MSP Douglas Lumsden to question the decision to cast her in a pantomime performance of Beauty and the Beast. Some of these tweets included insults based on the Chernobyl disaster and disabilities, and racial insults towards African American musicians Kelly Rowland, 50 Cent and Snoop Dogg in 2011. Godley apologised for the tweets and Public Health Scotland dropped her from a campaign.
Political activism
Godley was a strong advocate for the transgender rights movement, actively supporting protections for the international transgender community, a stance that had led to her receiving death threats. She was also a supporter of Scottish independence. Initially a supporter of the Conservatives in her youth, once going so far as to meet Margaret Thatcher at a Scottish Conservative Party Conference in Perth, she later became a supporter of the Scottish National Party and toured the UK in February 2016 in support of Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.
Godley went viral that year after being pictured standing outside Donald Trump's Turnberry Golf resort holding a sign stating "Trump is a Cunt", having been prevented from approaching her subject by Police Scotland (who did not, however, stop her displaying the sign), and organised a protest in Glasgow just prior to the election of Trump as president, for which she received rape threats through Twitter.
Personal life
Godley married Sean Storrie in 1980. Storrie, who is on the autistic spectrum, was born into a Glasgow gangster family. Their daughter, Ashley Storrie (born 1986), who also has autism spectrum disorder, is a stand-up comedian and BBC Radio Scotland presenter.
Godley ran a public house in Calton, Glasgow, with her husband and his family for 14 years during the 1980s and 1990s. In 1982, when Godley was 21, her mother died after drowning in the River Clyde. Godley believed that her mother was murdered by her mother's boyfriend, who she claimed was violent. He was never charged by police for Annie Currie's death despite calls from her family for an investigation. On 31 December 2010, her brother Mij Currie died from a drug-related illness.
Illness and death
In November 2021, Godley announced via Twitter the cancellation of the last weekend of her tour, explaining that she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and was being treated in hospital, and underwent a full hysterectomy in January 2022. In June that year, she announced that she was cancer-free. In December, she announced that her cancer had returned and that she would need further chemotherapy. After her cancer spread, she began to receive palliative care and moved into a hospice in September 2024. She was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow on 31 October 2024.
Godley died at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow, on 2 November 2024, aged 63. Former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon paid tribute to her.

Biography
With roots in Rize, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was born in Istanbul on February 26, 1954. He graduated from Kasımpaşa Piyale Primary School in 1965 and completed his high school education at Istanbul Imam Hatip School (Religious Vocational High School) in 1973. Having succeeded in the necessary examinations for additional courses, Mr. Erdoğan received a diploma from Eyüp High School as well. He received his graduation diploma from Marmara University’s Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences in 1981.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye 🇹🇷!
Since his youth, Mr. Erdoğan has chosen to lead a social life intertwining with politics. From 1969 to 1982, he was also actively interested in football which taught him the significance of team work and spirit in his younger years. These years coincided with the time when Mr. Erdoğan as an idealistic young man started to be interested in social and national problems and stepped into active politics.
Assuming active responsibilities at the students’ branch of the National Turkish Students’ Association during his high school and university years, Mr. Erdoğan was elected the Head of the MSP Beyoğlu Youth Branch in 1976 and he was also elected the Head of the MSP İstanbul Youth Branch in the same year. Holding this position until 1980, he served as consultant and senior executive in the private sector during the September 12 era when the political parties were closed down.
Mr. Erdoğan returned to political activities with the Welfare Party, established in 1983, and he was elected the Beyoğlu District Head of the Welfare Party in 1984. In 1985, he was elected the İstanbul Provincial Head of the Welfare Party and in the same year he became a member of the Central Executive Board of the Welfare Party. Developing a new organizational structure which served as a model for other political parties during his tenure as Istanbul Provincial Head, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan carried out projects that aimed at urging the participation of women and youth in politics, thus taking important steps toward helping politics to be espoused and respected among the masses. This project won the Welfare Party a great success during the mayoral elections in Beyoğlu in 1989, serving as a good example for others in terms of studies at the party across the country.
As for the local elections held on March 27, 1994, Mr. Erdoğan was elected Mayor of Metropolitan İstanbul. During his term in office as Mayor, he produced correct diagnoses and solutions to the chronic problems of İstanbul, one of the world’s most important metropolitan cities through his political abilities, the importance he attached to team work and successful management in human resources and financial issues. The water problem was overcome by laying hundreds of kilometers of new pipe line, the garbage problem was solved through the establishment of the most modern recycling facilities and the problem of air pollution ended with the natural gas projects developed during Erdoğan’s term in office. As for traffic congestion and transportation deadlock, more than 50 bridges, passageways and freeways were constructed and many more projects which would guide the other administrations in the city were developed. Taking very stringent precautions for the correct exertion of the municipal resources and to prevent corruption, Mr. Erdoğan paid most of the debts of the İstanbul Municipality which he took over with its 2 billion dollars debt and he during his tenure achieved investments worth 4 billion dollars. Mr. Erdoğan, thus, accomplished a breakthrough in the municipal history and while his works served as good examples for other mayors, he won the confidence of the people.
On December 12, 1997, while addressing the public in Siirt, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan read a poem from a book, which was recommended by the National Education Ministry and published by a state agency, and after that, he was sentenced to imprisonment for reading that poem. Thus, his term as mayor was ended.
Mr. Erdoğan, after serving 4 months in prison, established the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) on August 14, 2001 with his friends as a result of the insistent demand from the public and the developing democratic process and he was elected Founding General Chair of the AK Party by the Council of Founders. The favor of the nation made the AK Party a political movement which enjoyed the broadest public support in the country in the very first year of its establishment and made it the sole ruling party with a two-thirds majority at the TBMM at the end of the parliamentary elections held in 2002.
Mr. Erdoğan, who was not a candidate for MP during the elections on November 3, 2002 due to the court’s decision against him at the time, joined the deputy renewal election held on March 9, 2003 in Siirt when the legal obstacle was lifted after the necessary legal regulations had been made. Taking 85 % of the votes cast in that election, he became a deputy from Siirt for the 22nd term.
Taking over the Prime Minister’s office on March 15, 2003, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan implemented a number of reforms of crucial importance in the shortest time with his ideal of a brighter and constantly growing Türkiye. The country made great progress in democratization, transparency and the prevention of corruption. In parallel with this, inflation which had not been overcome and which had adversely affected the country’s economy and the psychology of the people for decades was curbed. 6 zeros were removed from the Turkish currency, giving back the Turkish Lira its credit. The rate of the state’s debt interests were lowered and a considerable increase in the national income per capita was achieved. An unprecedented number of dams, residential units, schools, roads, hospitals and power plants were constructed. All these affirmative developments were described by many foreign observers and Western leaders as a “Silent Revolution”.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in addition to his fruitful initiatives described as a turning point in the history of the country in its bid to join the EU, has taken significant steps toward the resolution of the Cyprus problem and toward the development of efficient relations with many countries through his rational foreign policy and intense series of visits and contacts. The environment of stability established in the country, while moving the internal dynamics, has made Türkiye a pivotal country. Türkiye’s volume of trade and political power have remarkably increased not only in its region but also in the international area.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, as the General Chairman of the AK Party, won a great victory during the parliamentary elections held on July 22, 2007 and established the 60th government of the Republic of Türkiye by winning 46.6 % of the votes and received the vote of confidence.
Mr. Erdoğan, winning 49 % of the votes, arose triumphant at the end of the parliamentary elections held on June 12, 2011 and established the 61st government.
Elected the 12th President on August 10, 2014, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is also the first President of the Republic of Türkiye elected by popular vote.
Upon the approval of the constitutional amendment in a referendum on April 16 allowing the President to retain his/her party membership, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was elected at the 3rd Extraordinary Congress on May 21, 2017, as the Chairman of the AK Party, of which he is the founder.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, winning 52.59% of the votes, was re-elected President in the Presidential elections, held on June 24, 2018.
Mr. Erdoğan was sworn in on July 9, 2018 as the first President of the Presidential System of Government, which Türkiye switched to following the constitutional amendment that was adopted in the referendum on April 16, 2017.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is married with 4 children.

Storia Di Musica #223 - Manic Street Preachers - Everything Must Go, 1996
Il successo viene bissato due anni dopo da This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours, trascinato dal singolo If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next, i cui primi versi dicono “The future teaches you to be alone\The present to be afraid and cold\"So if I can shoot rabbits then I can shoot fascists". La band con alti e bassi continua ancora oggi ad avere un certo seguito, con picchi di popolarità come quando nel 2007 con Nina Persson dei Cardigans ottenne successo internazionale con Your Love Alone Is Not Enough. Un disco da riscoprire e una band da riascoltare.

Thanks for replying! Kinda glad that I may not be so wrong about that LBAL lyrics, cause I would feel like my life is a lie otherwise. RITH being Nicky is shocking, feels like such a Richey song. Do you have any good tips/resources on how to spot Nicky's lyrics? I haven't paid as much of attention to his work and I would like to be better at spotting his lines. Also thanks for indulging me, I like your MSP posts so much and it's such a joy to be able to engage!
A lot of the very early days Manics was Richey and Nicky working together on lines, or things being rearranged by James after they’d already been written. But there are lines that are definitely Nicky or Richey products rather than a combination of the two. They also definitely have their own individual styles and preoccupations, which makes it easier to pick out what lines belong to which person.
Nicky is flowery but straightforward in his lyrics, whereas Richey is waaaay more abstract and also more outgoing (and generally darker in a more intense way). For example, This Is Yesterday is a Nicky-penned lyric on THB that is about nostalgia and looking back on the past. Die In The Summertime is a Richey-penned lyric with the same themes. But Nicky's imagery is a lot prettier even when bleak (and it circles around one of his personal themes, which is being solitary and the positivity of alone-ness) and feels more bittersweet than painful. The images themselves are pretty concrete: the exploitation of ideas, lying in a field and looking at the sky, images of the entropy of time and nature.
Richey's imagery for the same themes are darker, more cynical, self-hating, and straight up suicidal. By the way, Nicky said in an interview from 1994 when Richey was in hospital that the scariest line Richey wrote was the "tiny animal curled into a quarter circle" line. They're also more abstract: images of trying to stay young-looking despite the entropy of time and failing due to the constant need for upkeep, envisioning your younger past self, the brilliantly surreal "I have crawled so far sideways" line (which is one of my favorites), Richey's usual crooked return to religious symbolism.
Richey also writes about sex or sexual situations way more than Nicky. Nicky tends to write poetic phrases that are still mainly grammatically correct and full phrases, whereas Richey often uses soundbite-type phrases that omit filler words, more like news titles or blurbs, or just crunches words together Burroughs cut-up style. Nicky’s writing is more traditional style poetry. It tends to be more languid and romantic. It also tends to be more personal. Richey wrote a lot of songs from the point of view of other characters, or ones fairly devoid of a referenced “self” and just pure political or social critique, and the ones that do reference a self are very self-antagonizing, whereas Nicky tends to antagonize others.
I have a theory about JFPL being a stylistic take on Modernist literature, and I think that’s the difference between Richey and Nicky. Richey basically spewed out loads of imagery and opinion without necessarily connecting it all, because the whole point is the impression given in the song as a whole, rather than a complete narrative or metaphor (except for the songs that are essentially character studies of others). Nicky writes more like traditional poetry or perhaps postmodern poetry, very personal even when it’s political, and the imagery tends to all connect to each other in some way.
(I also think Richey was big on forcing listeners to do the work to understand what he was saying. It’s part of why a lot of us love the Richey era stuff; it really forced us to read and research in order to understand everything. It made us smarter, which always feels good, and makes you feel like you’re participating. Nicky is not as intense and makes his lyrics much more accessible and far less stuffed with references. This is why they got big after Richey’s death and not before. Sadly it has also become his downfall in the last 2 albums imo.)
Richey's themes usually are really scathing and obscure political references, control (or lack thereof) over the body or self-image, skewed religious symbolism, and abstract imagery placed situationist-style into the lyrics. Nicky's themes tend to be comfort, being alone and enjoying it, politics but with more straightforward themes and more accessible empathy, and his style is more straightforward metaphors. There are also words or word types that one or the other tends to use more than the other (“hate” is a big Nicky-word, for example).
THB is mostly Richey with random injections from Nicky in various songs; it’s a lot harder to tell because I think Nicky really only contributed a few lines or parts of lines here and there. In GT and GATS their writing was slightly more equal but you can still sort of tell who wrote what.
Some songs that are easier to tell who wrote what are Nostalgic Pushead, Stay Beautiful, Another Invented Disease, NatWest Barclays Midlands Lloyds, and Drug Drug Druggy. I’m pretty sure the chorus to Nostalgic is Nicky, or at least it’s Nicky’s structure. Stuff like “radio nostalgia is radio death” “60′s alienation the anthem of care / now a knife constantly slashing eyelids” and most of the middle 8 is likely Richey. Stay Beautiful I think is primarily Nicky, but I do know the “why don’t you just” part was Richey’s idea, so the audience could shout “fuck off”. “All we love is lonely wreckage” is such a Nicky line, he very much goes for lines about loneliness but he also likes images of destruction and damage, but things that are more general, nothing as visceral as the knife slashing eyelids line. “Anxiety is freedom” could have been either of them, but I’m guessing it’s another Richey since it’s based on Kierkegaard. Or it’s a JDB contribution, considering his tattoo. The chorus to Another Invented is very Nicky, again it goes back to his themes of being alone and being bored. I think this is one where they wrote back and forth because “Left alone in corporate slums / Where germs are free not amex fun / Healthy bodies in empty minds Only exist in advert time” is all very Richey, obsession with control of the body as well as the affects of capitalism and mass culture and more abstract line imagery like “germs are free not amex fun.” Thematically it’s definitely a song they wrote together because it hits all their favorite things to critique, from capitalism and mass media to politics and the overwhelming-ness of human interaction. (Side note: I think Love’s Sweet Exile is one they quite literally wrote back and forth, perhaps two lines at a time, because the imagery switches back and forth, and the ending lines of each verse have the “cos we hate” line that is very Nicky.) Drug Drug Druggy is another one I think they went back and forth on, because the opening verse is all Nicky themes, but “Wanna stay in 666 where this darkness don’t lie” sounds like young Richey. Richey used a lot more slang language or sentence structure than Nicky. Also, Crucifix Kiss has very Richey themes of religion; the “Listen to Luke sermon six” line is absolutely his. The whole song is specifically a critique of televangelists and people like that. Whereas You Love Us is that sort of sweetly creative, sort of glam’ed up antagonism that is very Nicky. There are some songs, like La Tristessa, Sleepflower, or Little Baby Nothing, where their interests and themes overlap really well so I’m not sure who wrote what lines except maybe one or two that really jump out as one or the other of them (which also could be down to JDB’s editing; I’ve always wondered how much longer a lot of these lyrics were until they were edited down and rearranged by James and Sean into something usable).
The fact that Richey wrote most of THB and all of JFPL and a number of manifestos for zines, and then we get all of Nicky’s solo writing endeavours after Richey’s death, means there’s actually really good examples of each of their “solo” writing styles and thematic preoccupations and things, which is the best way to figure out who wrote what.
Oooh, I had a lot of thoughts! Thanks for enjoying my MSP posts! There are more older ones on my other blog @meta-squash reposted from my old blog from before it got deleted in 2017, if you want to check those out too! (Also feel free to come talk to me about Manics at any point. Much as their newest album disappointed me, I still love all their old stuff!)
