Homeless NDA Ministers
IMC WEB DESK NEW DELHI: Indian politics defines transition. Elections saw Modi as the PM heading NDA-led coalition government. Soon after, former Union Ministers asked to vacate their designated homes
NDA goes through changes
Indian politics witnessed weighty changes in 2024. On 7th June 2024, Narendra Modi confirmed the support of 293 MPs to Droupadi Murmu, the President of India. This marked Modi’s third term as Prime Minister and his first-time heading NDA-led coalition government with the Telugu Desam Party of Andhra Pradesh and Janata Dal (United) of Bihar emerging as two primary alliances.
A noticeable step taken by the Directorate of Estates (DoE) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) surely makes up for a sweeping swap!
DoE served a notice to few of the former Union Ministers in Indian Politics to vacate their official accommodation in Delhi’s Lutyens’ by 10 July as requests for accommodation pour in from newly appointed ministers.
All Union ministers and ministers of state (MoS) in Indian politics are entitled to a ‘Type VIII’ bungalow in Delhi’s Lutyens’. Former ministers have to vacate such an accommodation when they lose their ministerial berth, according to the DoE rules.
NDA-led coalition government have removed thirty-seven formers ministers in from Narendra Modi’s Union Council of Ministers. Indian politics stands synonymous to shifting gears.
Significant leaders in Indian politics namely Smriti Irani, Arjun Munda, R.K Singh, Niranjan Jyoti, Sanjeev Balyan, and Rajeev Chandrashekhar, lost in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. Others, such as Anurag Thakur, Narayan Rane, and Parshottam Rupala, won but did not get a ministerial berth this time. Some, such as Meenakshi Lekhi, did not get a ticket to contest the polls as the BJP replaced them with new faces. When the nation asks what is politics, well this is the face of real Indian Politics.
The DoE notice will be followed by a show cause notice eventually leading to an eviction notice.
Indian politics is often referred as the dance of democracy! While few ministers might still be showing unwillingness to vacate, there are others who have been upfront in changing their designated accommodation.
Former Education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, who was served with an eviction notice by the Directorate of Estates recently, has also conveyed that he would be vacating the 27, Safdarjung Road bungalow.
Lutyens-Landmark in Indian Politics
Spread across an area of 23.60sqkm, The Lutyens Bungalow Zone is home to the luminaries of Indian Politics as well as high-net-worth individuals with about 3000 government-owned bungalows.
Serving NDA Union ministers were eligible for accommodation as allotted by the DoE. House committees of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats are the competent authorities to allot accommodation to MPs.
Members are entitled to a licence-fee free flat or hostel accommodation throughout their term of office.
Members are entitled to water supply without payment of charges up to 4000 kl per annum. They are eligible for electricity up to 50,000 units (25,000 units measure on light meter and 25,000 units on power meter or pooled together) per annum beginning from January 1 every year.
Other facilities include- washing of sofa covers and curtains every three months. Furniture within the monetary ceiling of Rs 60,000 in respect of durable furniture.
They are also allowed for a 25 per cent remission in the rent on account of any improvement or addition made to it or any additional service provided thereto by way of furniture, electrical equipment and other services.
Editor’s Note
Around 50 former union ministers and MPs from the last Lok Sabha have been sent notice by DoE to vacate their official accommodation. Home is always closest to ones heart and when it is in the poshest locality of the capital and earned through valid eligibility, the address caries a myriad of meaning for the resident. Apparently it is just might be a regular governmental procedure but delving deep, slight feeling uprootedness might haunt souls of Indian politics.

Kejriwal Expresses Gratitude to Rahul and Kharge for Backing AAP on Delhi Services Bill
The Delhi Services Bill took center stage as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal extended his heartfelt appreciation to Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge and MP Rahul Gandhi. Their resolute support for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) against the GNCTD (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was acknowledged by Kejriwal with gratitude.
In individual letters addressed to Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, Kejriwal conveyed his thanks on behalf of Delhi's populace, numbering two crore. He lauded their party's stance in opposing and voting against the GNCTD (Amendment) Bill, 2023. Kejriwal's letters carried his profound respect for the Congress leaders' commitment to safeguarding the rights of Delhi's citizens both within the Parliament's chambers and beyond.
Kejriwal stated, "I would like to place on record the heartfelt appreciation for championing the rights of the people of Delhi inside as well as outside the Parliament. I am certain that your unflinching loyalty towards the principles of our Constitution will be remembered for decades."
The Delhi Chief Minister's remarks also hinted at his collaboration with the 'I.N.D.I.A' bloc, a coalition of 26 Opposition parties. He expressed eagerness for their continued support in the ongoing battle against elements that undermine the Constitution. Kejriwal's letters were in harmony with similar gestures extended to Nitish Kumar, Uddhav Thackeray, Mamta Banerjee, Sharad Pawar, MK Stalin, Hemant Soren, and KCR.
Notably, the Delhi Services Bill triumphed in the Rajya Sabha, garnering a significant victory for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Securing 131 votes in favor, the bill surpassed the opposition coalition 'I.N.D.I.A,' which managed 102 votes against it. Following this outcome, Arvind Kejriwal passionately critiqued the Central government for their approach and interference in Delhi's governance.
Kejriwal's affinity for his role as 'Delhi ka beta' resonated as he highlighted the consistent support from the people, reinforcing his commitment to governance aligned with their aspirations. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the impact of collaborative efforts and the voice of the people remain integral to the fabric of India's democracy.

In the midst of the controversy surrounding a scene in Oppenheimer, where the titular character is depicted engaging in sexual activity while reciting verses from an ancient Sanskrit scripture, purportedly the Bhagavad Gita, Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut has stepped forward to praise Christopher Nolan’s biographical thriller film.
Taking to social media on Monday, Kangana lauded the movie as “Christopher Nolan’s best work so far” and expressed her admiration for the part in the film referencing Bhagavad Gita and Lord Vishnu. “Most important film of our time… I am so excited I just didn’t want it to end… It has everything I deeply love, I am passionate about physics and politics… For me, this was like a cinematic orgasm… beyond wonderful,” she noted while sharing a selfie video.
“The theme of the film is that when your nationalism rises, it precedes your religion; but when your humanity rises, it precedes your nationalism and you become a problem for the system. And the system that built you, starts disintegrating you. My favourite part is the reference to Srimad Bhagavad Gita and Lord Vishnu when he channelises his inner Vishnu. Go watch it… it’s a lovely film,” the Queen actor said in the video.
J Robert Oppenheimer, regarded as ‘the father of the atom bomb’, had learnt Sanskrit and was said to be influenced by the Bhagavad Gita. In the film, Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, is shown having sex with psychologist Jean Tatler (Florence Pugh) as she asks him to read a verse from what appears to be a Sanskrit book, whose title or cover is not visible.
The scene involving Gita in Oppenheimer had irked a section of social media users, who demanded the removal of the sequence from Christopher Nolan’s latest film.
Uday Mahurkar, information commissioner, Government of India, wrote an open letter to Nolan, terming the scene a “disturbing attack on Hinduism” and appealed to the director to remove the scene worldwide.
“We urge, on behalf of billion Hindus and the timeless tradition of lives being transformed by revered Geeta, to do all that is needed to uphold the dignity of their revered book and remove this scene from your film across the world. Should you choose to ignore this appeal it would be deemed as a deliberate assault on Indian civilisation. Eagerly await needful action (sic)” Mahurkar, founder of Save Culture Save India Foundation, wrote.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur has sought an explanation from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on why it cleared the movie in its present form. According to sources, Thakur has demanded accountability from the CBFC, which functions under the aegis of the I&B Ministry, regarding clearing the movie with the controversial scene, which has hurt the sentiments of a section of the Hindu community.
The Dhaakad actor’s comments come a day after she locked horns with former Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy after the latter questioned her Y-plus security status. He tweeted, “The SPG knows, and has kept a register of her movements. I wonder why since it is no business of SPG to track Bollywood stars. In her case, on a special dispensation, she has a high level of security provided.”
Kangana replied, “I am not just a Bollywood star sir, I am also a very vocal and concerned citizen, I was the target of political malice in Maharashtra, at my expense nationalists could make a government here. I also spoke about tukde gang and strongly condemned Khalistani groups. I am also a filmmaker, writer and producer and my next production Emergency involves operation Bluestar… there is evident treat to my life hence I requested for extended security… Is there something wrong in this Sir?”'

[ad_1] GG News Bureau New Delhi, 28th Nov. The proceedings of the Rajya Sabha were washed out for the third day in a row on Thursday, as opposition MPs continued their protests over the Adani issue and the violence in Manipur and Sambhal. The House was adjourned within minutes of reconvening at 12 noon, following an earlier adjournment just after 11 am. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar made repeated appeals for decorum and urged the members to allow the Question Hour to proceed. However, these calls were ignored as opposition MPs persisted with their protests, raising slogans and demanding discussions on the issues at hand. In his address, Dhankhar expressed disappointment over the disruption, noting that Wednesday marked a historic milestone—the beginning of the final quarter-century before India’s Constitution turns 100. He lamented that the opportunity to engage in productive dialogue was missed. “This was a moment for our House of Elders to send a powerful message of hope to 1.4 billion Indians,” he said, adding that the House had failed to meet the expectations of the people. The chairman emphasized the importance of meaningful debate, saying, “Parliamentary disruption is not a remedy but a malady that weakens the very foundation of our democracy.” He urged the members to return to thoughtful discussion, but the protests continued, leading to the adjournment of the House for the day. The Rajya Sabha is scheduled to reconvene on Friday at 11 am. Earlier, when the session began, proceedings were delayed for nearly 50 minutes as opposition MPs raised objections over the rejection of their notices for adjournment motions. These notices sought discussions on allegations against the Adani Group, as well as the violence in Manipur and Sambhal. Despite opposition demands, Dhankhar rejected all the notices, further escalating tensions in the House. Anil Ambani: A Glimpse into His Political Journey
Anil Ambani, widely recognised for his business acumen and contributions to India’s industrial growth, also dabbled in politics during his tenure as a Rajya Sabha member. Though his stint in the Upper House of Parliament was brief, it provided a unique insight into his views on governance, policy-making, and public service. Serving as a Rajya Sabha MP from 2004 to 2006, Ambani’s entry into the political arena added another dimension to his multifaceted persona.
Anil Ambani’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha in 2004 as an Independent candidate from Uttar Pradesh was a significant milestone in his career. Supported by the Samajwadi Party, his candidature reflected his growing influence beyond the corporate world. His election to the Rajya Sabha was not merely a personal achievement but a recognition of his potential to contribute to national policy-making, especially in infrastructure, economic growth, and technology.
Ambani’s political journey began during a transformative phase in Indian politics, with the country witnessing rapid economic liberalisation and global integration. His corporate experience and vision for India’s development made him a promising addition to the Rajya Sabha.
Although his tenure lasted only two years, Ambani’s time in the Rajya Sabha allowed him to advocate for reforms and policies aligned with his expertise. As a businessman, he brought a pragmatic perspective to discussions on economic policies, infrastructure development, and industrial growth.
One of his key areas of focus was the enhancement of public-private partnerships (PPPs) to accelerate infrastructure projects in India. Having spearheaded several large-scale projects in his corporate life, Ambani was vocal about the need for policy frameworks that encourage private sector participation in public development. His emphasis on modernising urban infrastructure, including metros and highways, stemmed from his belief that robust infrastructure is the backbone of a thriving economy.
Ambani also advocated for initiatives that could foster entrepreneurship and create employment opportunities. Recognising the untapped potential of India’s youth, he highlighted the importance of education and skill development in shaping the workforce of tomorrow.
Anil Ambani’s Rajya Sabha tenure coincided with a turbulent personal and professional life period. The much-publicised division of the Reliance empire between him and his elder brother Mukesh Ambani in 2005 demanded his attention, leaving little room to actively engage in politics. The complexities of managing a sprawling business empire, coupled with the challenges of navigating political dynamics, eventually led to his resignation from the Rajya Sabha in 2006.
Ambani’s resignation was attributed to his desire to focus on his corporate responsibilities, particularly during a critical juncture for the Reliance Group. While his political stint was short-lived, it underscored the challenges of balancing the demands of business and public service.
Though brief, Anil Ambani’s time in the Rajya Sabha highlighted his aspirations to contribute to national development beyond the corporate sphere. His focus on infrastructure, economic reforms, and public-private collaboration resonated with his professional expertise and vision for India’s progress.
Today, as Ambani continues to navigate the challenges and opportunities in his business ventures, his political stint remains a reminder of his willingness to step beyond his comfort zone and explore avenues for public service. It underscores his belief in the power of leadership, whether in the boardroom or the corridors of Parliament, to drive meaningful change.
