Rise of the Tyrant #4
Rise of the Tyrant #4 Amigo Comics 2019 Written by Massimo Rosi Illustrated by Luca Panciroli Coloured by Pamela Poggiali Lettered & Logo by Monkey Typers No More Good Water While the Emerald Tyrant is busy fighting in Japan, madness and fear are spreading among the people. People start to act irrationally, some even attacking those who are protecting them. A horrible turn of events that will cause Ryan to question if Humanity is worth saving. Well now this may be the finale for this arc but I will be gosh darned that this is as epic and interesting as anything you'll see on the television. It is a very cinematic looking book and that Luca does this purposefully is very recognisable, plus I really dig it. I have to almost hail Massimo as something of a profit because this was done long before the current state of the world today and he's really captured society and it's reaction to adversity in ways that terrifyingly accurate. Which in and of itself really demonstrates Massimo's ability to tell a story through words and this man is an extremely adept and talented writer. Not only is the story extremely original in concept but it is written so incredibly well with it's layers and sub-plots running throughout providing a much larger picture. I keep saying Massimo is the man to watch and probably one of the best writers of his generation. I am so much enjoying the way that this is being told. The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented to the reader perfectly. I am a huge supporter of the reader not knowing anything ahead of the characters so that as it plays out the excitement, danger and range of emotional reactions are shared with the characters simultaneously. The character development we see is amazing and it is so incredibly interesting to me to see them going through what they are separately and then seeing them come together and not acknowledging what they've come to realise in private. It so wickedly delightful in how it's presented and how we see this and it's too uncanny in it's resemblance to real life. The pacing is amazing and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way and it is able to showcase how all of this works together to create the books ebb & flow. The interior artwork that we see here is insanely good. I mean it too, mindbogglingly insanely good! It is so cute that Luca has cast actors in these roles that are actually p3e3rfectly done. The way we see the page layouts and how we see the fullness in the panels, see backgrounds, really do make this feel like a cinematic event. The way we are treated to seeing the depth perception, sense of scale and this overall sense of size and scope of the story and I have to say that this is a truly rare treat to visually behold. The level of quality that we see in the attention to detail is crazy, crazy good and it really helps the reader take the emotional journey of the writing to new heights. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a magnificent eye for storytelling. The colour work is just as divinely rendered. The hues and tones within the colours we see that create the shading, highlights and shadow work are exceptionally well done. Also we see hues and tones you don't normally think of being associated with each other and that's kind of what makes this brilliant. There is a pure understanding of colour here and the mastery of it. This is an amazing mindbogglingly good story and how it's presented through words and visuals make this something should make you sit up and take notice. This is the kind of storytelling we all want, long for and need but don't find in the major houses. Indie Comics isn't a dirty phrase any longer and today it represents the home of stories like this.

Dark Frontier #4 by Massimo Rosi, Andrea Molinari
About Dark Frontier #4: In a post-apocalyptic future the American President has closed the country's borders to avoid both foreign immigration and the exodus of its own citizens. Over the years, the nation's remaining natural resources became the target of major industries. But rebels rose up to protect these few remaining reserves. Known as the Black Mountain Ghosts they waged a raiding campaign against the government. However, due to traitors within the organization the government violently took down the insurgents and the last natural reserves of the entire United States disappeared, leaving behind only desolate sand and slums. Now the remaining dying population of this devastated country find themselves prisoners with no way out, fighting over scraps and avoiding roaming bandits, and with a future left on borrowed time. And into this land two young lovers, both veterans of that violent uprising, try to make their way in the devastated world that conflict left in its wake. And this is their story. THIS ISSUE: “Armageddon Checklist” – Luc and Max are ambushed by the ex-military marauders who nearly beat Max to death and brain damaged. Rise of the Tyrant #3
Rise of the Tyrant #3 Amigo Comics 2019 Created & Written by Massimo Rosi Illustrated by Luca Panciroli Coloured by Pamela Poggiali Lettered by Monkey Typers We Are One The alien invaders have learned to evolve, to hide among us, and to attack us in new ways. This fuels an atmosphere of terror and paranoia. Meanwhile, a new Golem arrives, attacking Japan. Ryan must return to the Emerald Tyrant to stop this new giant monster. This story is utterly amazing to me. Massimo manages to introduce a new arc in the story in the midst of what's already happening and that adds to the rich layering we have seen since the start. Just when we think that the intensity of what is happening couldn't be heightened any further he went all “hold my beer” on us. It has been a long time since a voice like this has managed to excite me so much just by seeing his name on a project. The more we see out of him the better the stories seem to be constructed and to see the structure of the story, the book, in such a way as this reminds me off a box office thriller only better. The way this story is being told is utterly brilliant. The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold and how the reader learns information is presented perfectly. Through flashbacks and events that unfold we see how the story continues to grow, change and evolve like it's a life-form of it's own. The character development we see is sensational! Those integral flashbacks, the dialogue and the situations and circumstances they find themselves in keep furthering who they are and becoming with such aplomb. The pacing is perfect and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way it creates this adrenaline fuelled and emotionally charged ebb & flow to the book. The action thriller genre has included projects like Pacific Rim and they've been okay, even fun to watch. With the whole science fiction aspect being fully embraced and integrated into the story like it is changes the entire feel of the story. We've gone from oh look a giant mecha fighting monsters to an infection that evolves and changes as it absorbs cities and people. Seeing what we do here flips the whole genre on it's side and surpasses anything else out there. The interiors are absolutely stunning! The linework is superb and how we see the varying weights being utilised to showcase the attention to detail we see is astonishingly emotional. I say this because that first two-page spread and how you see what you see it leaves that indelible mark upon and there's no escaping it. The fact that so many of the faces are familiar and how their facial expressions and body language are shown further the characterisation in ways that words alone cannot do. That backgrounds are utilised as they are and how they work within the composition inside the panels to bring us this depth perception, scale and overall sense of size and scope to the book is bloody marvellous. The utilisation of the page layout and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show this phenomenal eye for storytelling. The colour work here is divine. From how light sources are utilised and how the various hues and tones within the colours are able to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is inspiring. Every time we think we've got a handle on the story something else comes along and says HA fooled ya! I know this is a four issue run but seriously with everything we are seeing and all the branches in the layering of the story this could run for years and I would be there single issue that came out. In other words I want this to keep going, I want more as this is the kind of storytelling that feature films and soap operas could dream of having. My friends, allies and frenemies you NEED to get this as it stands alone as something truly special.

Rise of the Tyrant #2
Rise of the Tyrant #2 Amigo Comics 2019 Written by Massimo Rosi Illustrated by Luca Panciroli Coloured by Pamela Poggiali Lettered & Logo by Monkey Typers Everything falls into a spiral of panic. Alien invasion is wiping out our planet's resources and spreading a pandemic that could make Humankind extinct. The only thing that stands between annihilation and us is... just a family and the giant combat robot they designed: The Emerald Tyrant. There are a few things I can be sure of, Amigo Comics will always put out strong interesting books and Massimo never disappoints me. I love the idea behind this story and as we see the Golem's attacking and absorbing cities and people alike with no idea what it really is well that's how a writers imagination and creativity comes to life. The idea that they are a virus is one that intrigues me and it engages me. How so you ask?, well by thinking it's a virus I run scenarios through my mind as to what their purpose would be. Like are they cleansing the planet for another race to come in and settle the planet? There are more but that's just one example of how my mind, imagination and creativity comes to life thanks to what I see on the page. The way that this is being told is kind of brilliant. The opening with the diary of Dr. Malcolm Winston Campbell and his fervent plea or declaration to help save the world, or what's left of it, as he pledges all the resources he and his family have is fantastic stuff. I can't help but wonder what the ulterior motive behind it is, however, as no one is this altruistic even in the most dire of times. The story & plot development that we see through the way that the sequence of events unfolds and how the reader learns information is laid down extremely well. The different places, people who have various wants and needs is a lot to handle but here it's done with such aplomb. The character development is marvellous to see being revealed. As the characters get more time on the page they get those moments where we see more of what they are about and with that it means we want to see and know more. Particularly if we aren't one of their fans. The pacing is solid and the way it takes us on a journey through the pages it reveals those twists and turns that take mind in a myriad of directions. The ebb & flow that is created here is really rather extraordinary to experience. The interiors here are gorgeous. The linework is incredibly strong and how we see the varying weights to bring out this level of attention to detail is fantastic. Now I will say I kind of applaud seeing some familiar faces here, Sean Connery, Christopher Walken, James Brolin and Danny Glover in roles that are perfect for them is amazing. It brings this true cinematic feel to the artwork and I have to say it's an unexpected quality that isn't what you think is going to happen. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a very strong and talented eye for storytelling. The utilisation of backgrounds and how they work within the composition inside the panels bring us depth perception, scale and a sense of size and scope to the book. The colour work is sensational! That plaid pattern in Ryan's shirt makes me want one of my own in those exact colours. The way that we see the hues and tones within the colours create the shading, highlights and shadows are done by someone with a gorgeous eye for colour and how they should be utilised. As the tension mounts within the story and we see how characters act and behave we begin to see how humanity isn't able to come together in times of need. Luke, who looks incredibly odd, for example can't seem to stop harassing Ryan and this will lead to a confrontation be disastrous down the road. I love how the story engages the reader, so we feel what the characters do and how it's able to form connections between readers' and characters. This is one of those must not miss series that's flying under the radar.

Rise of the Tyrant #1
Rise of the Tyrant #1 Amigo Comics 2019 Written by Massimo Rosi Illustrated by Luca Panciroli Coloured by Pamela Poggiali Lettered by Ferran Delgado Episode 1: Black Matter A comet releases eggs on Earth containing a swarm of oleaginous life-forms. They transform everything into creatures we call Golems. But there is a family who holds the secret to defeat them. The Campbells. Made from alien materials, they create the ultimate weapon. A mecha called The Emerald Tyrant. Well here we go folks, first I love Massimo's writing and with Luca & Pamela on board we see this amazing new take on alien life-forms arriving on Earth. Oddly enough my first thought upon seeing them was of the original Star Trek with all it's innovative and unique life-forms from the Salt Vampire, Neural parasites, Yarnak and the Horta this to me feels like it fits right in with them and it is so very glorious to see. So even if you aren't familiar with all those it is still such a unique and interesting take on the genre and I gotta admit this is so much more fun that anything Pacific Rim has! I really am enjoying the way that this is being told. The story & plot development we see through the sequence of events as they unfold through the release of information to the reader this a well thought out and executed issue. The character development is nicely done as well. I like the way that we get this baseline personality that we will watch grow, evolve and change as situations arise and we see how they react to them. When we look at the pacing, which is excellent by the way, we see how the twist and turns help to create this really nice ebb & flow to the book. The way that we see how the book is structured and how the events flow with a narration that covers a lot of ground but never feels rushed or too much too soon is a really nice thing to see. It never ceases to amaze me just how creative and interesting writers can be. Just when you think that all angles within a genre have been taken, tweaked or worked over to death along comes someone like Massimo who has a fresh new take. Then at the end to introduce a second genre into the mix was pure genius and makes me wonder how this man isn't more well known than he is. I mean I have yet to read something from him that isn't extremely well written, fleshed out and executed to near perfection time and time again. I am loving every single moment of the interiors here. There is something about seeing some of the pages with this amazing linework alongside this pixelated effect that just captures the eye, mind and imagination in ways we've never seen before. The attention to detail here is outrageous and that we see so much variation through the weight of the linework is simply marvellous. The composition inside the panels that bring us this depth perception and scale is so well rendered. That backgrounds are as prolific as they are just shows Luca knows how important they are to the story and how they enhance the moments and bring this sense of size and scope to the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show such an amazingly talented eye for storytelling. Pamela's colour work here is equally as impressive. The way she utilised the brighter shades and hues for the foreground and a more muted version of hues and tones in the backgrounds is stunning. The way she creates this shading and shadow work and utilises that to really create the right mood and feeling in the moment is spectacular. I have said time and again that Amigo Comics has some of the best books on the market that you are NOT reading. It really is time to change that and make sure you seek this out or have your shop order them because this is what storytelling is all about. A supremely well written story that allows the reader to feel and become engaged with they see alongside these magnificent interiors and some darn fine lettering make this a top of the pile read.
