Having reread The Golden Compass, it really is apparent how much of Lyra's behavior stems from her being an abused and neglected child.
I don't think that Pullman really intended for her to be seen as abused, at least not when it comes to how much she was beaten as a child. Lyra's beatings are mentioned casually, and Pullman is 78 years old; he would have grown up in a time where corporal punishment was seen as normal, and it wouldn't be surprising to learn he was one of those who thinks "I was spanked and I turned out just fine." (Plus, given how he treated her in the following two books, I'm sure he would similarly think she deserved the abuse she got.)
But there have been countless studies showing how psychologically damaging corporal punishment is, and more than that, people who are abused will come up with defense mechanisms to try to prevent further abuse. These defense mechanisms can vary, but Lyra's primary one seems to be lying, along running away and hiding. To explore this, lets first look at the times it's mentioned that Lyra is beaten as a child, and how this teaches her to fear the adults around her:
The visitor mentioned by the Master, Lord Asriel, was her uncle, a man whom she admired and feared greatly [. . .] He was fierce: if he caught her in here she'd be severely punished [. . .] (TGC, 6).
. . .
Lyra was afraid of the Steward, who had twice beaten her (TGC, 7).
. . .
She couldn't help herself. She tumbled out of the wardrobe and scrambled up to snatch the glass from his hand. The wine flew out, splashing on the edge of the table and the carpet, and then the glass fell and smashed. He seized her wrist and twisted hard. "Lyra! What the hell are you doing?" "Let me go and I'll tell you!" "I'll break your arm first. How dare you come in here?" "I've just saved your life!" They were still for a moment, the girl twisted in pain but grimacing to prevent herself from crying out louder, the man bent over her frowning like thunder. [. . .] Her uncle looked down with a restrained fury, and she didn't dare meet his eyes. [. . .] There was a knock on the door. 'That'll be the Porter,' said Lord Asriel. "Back in the wardrobe. If I hear the slightest noise, I'll make you wish you were dead" (TGC, 14 - 15).
. . .
". . . Don't argue anymore or I shall be angry." And his daemon growled with a deep savage rumble that made Lyra suddenly aware of what it would be like to have teeth meeting in her throat (TGC, 28).
. . .
It was a mighty voice, a woman's voice, but a woman with lungs of brass and leather. Lyra looked around for her at once, because this was Ma Costa, who had clouted Lyra dizzy on two occasions [. . .] Lyra admired Ma costa greatly, but she intended to be wary of her for some time yet, for theirs was the boat she had hijacked" (TGC, 54)
. . .
"Don't want to look at nothing," Lyra muttered. Mrs Lonsdale smacked her leg. "Wash," she said ferociously. "You get all that dirt off." "Why?" Lyra said at last. "I never wash my knees usually. No one's going to look at my knees. What've I got to do all this for? You don't care about Roger, neither, any more than Chef does. I'm the only one that --" Another smack, on the other leg (TGC, 64).
. . .
She didn't finish the sentence, because Mrs. Coulter's daemon sprang off the sofa in a blur of golden fur and pinned Pantalaimon to the carpet before he could move. Lyra cried out in alarm, and then in fear and pain, as Pantalaimon twisted this way and that, shrieking and snarling, unable to loosen the golden monkey's grip. Only a few seconds, and the monkey had overmastered him: with one fierce black paw around his throat and his black paws gripping the polecat's lower limbs, he took one of Pantalaimon's ears in his other paw and pulled as if he intended to tear it off. Not angrily, either, but with a cold curious force that was horrifying to see and even worse to feel. Lyra sobbed in terror. "Don't! Please! Stop hurting us!" Mrs Coulter looked up from her flowers. "Do as I tell you, then," she said. "I promise!" [. . .] "What do you think off the flowers, dear?" said Mrs Coulter as sweetly as if nothing had happened. "I suppose one can't go wrong with roses, but you can have too much of a good thing . . . Have the caterers brought enough ice? Be a dear and go and ask. Warm drinks are horrid . . ." Lyra found it was quite easy to pretend to be lighthearted and charming [. . .] (TGC, 86 - 87).
There are probably more examples, but all of these are only in the first hundred chapters of the first book of the novel. It is mentioned that Lyra is beaten, that she is smacked; her own father (whom she believes to be her uncle) twists her arm and threatens to break it because she dared to be in a room she wasn't supposed to be, and spilled some wine. Her mother (whom she doesn't know is her mother) has her daemon almost twist the ear off Lyra's daemon for daring to talk back, and then makes Lyra kiss her cheek in apology and pretend like nothing happened. And all of this treatment -- all of this abuse -- is treated like perfectly normal for Lyra's upbringing.
So considering this, is it any wonder she learned to lie so well? That she calls herself a practiced liar? We see throughout the first book especially that Lyra lies to get herself out of danger, with the most iconic moment being when she lies to Iofur Raknison in order to survive being captured by his bears (and restore Iorek to the throne). When she can't lie, she avoids eye contact, runs away, and/or hides. She admires some of the adults who scare her (Asriel, Ma Costa), but she also fears them because they've physically assaulted her in the past and could do so again. Later books especially try to treat her lying as a genetic trait inherited from her mother, but it's clear to me that Lyra learned to lie precisely to protect herself from the way the adults around her would beat her without a second thought.
(It's also worth noting that the first book makes it clear that while Lyra has the charm of Mrs Coulter, she also has the ferocity of Asriel. The latter two books took the Asriel comparisons and gave them to Will instead, but that's a rant for another time.)
As for the neglect -- later books mention how Lyra was never held or cuddled as a baby or child. She has no memories of ever being shown any warmth. So not only was Lyra beaten by the adults at Jordan College (and Lord Asriel, and Ma Costa, and later Mrs Coulter), but she was never given any warmth, either. Is it any wonder that she turned out to be a mistrustful little liar? She wasn't bad; she was trying to protect herself given that the adults in her life never did. Her practiced lying is something to sympathize with her over, not look down on her for.
#his dark materials#the golden compass#lyra silvertongue#lyra didn't have a single adult actually treat her right until she met Farder Coram#and later Iorek Byrnison + Lee Scoresby + Serafina Pekkala#although Ma Costa came close she still hit Lyra so hard she got dizzy *twice* before#and yeah Lyra doing things like stealing the boat isn't great. but Lyra was a *child*#and it's not okay to hit children#(the one time Iorek hit her it was to knock her out of the way of an arrow. so he is given a pass bc he was saving her life)#i don't think John Faa ever hit her either. tho she did fear him. and she never feared Farder Coram#so that's why i give it to Farder Coram over John Faa

kieynan lonsdale / they/them ——— no way is that TARIQ GODWIN.. they’re a 31-year-old HUMAN notoriously known for being REBELLIOUS & ANTAGONISTIC but there are some people who have seen them being CLEVER & ADAPTABLE. if you ask me, they remind me a lot of always trying to find a way to get underneath someone’s skin, jumping the train tracks, constantly moving, leaving the sheets untucked, and the chaos of a lively city, but that could just be because they’re considered the JACK OF ALL TRADES around town. just keep an eye on them & see if their true colors shine through..
GENERAL.
full name: tariq solomon godwin nicknames: tar, riqi classification: human gender / pronouns: non-binary, they/them age / birthday: 31, december 19th orientations: pansexual, the ash ketchum of hoes occupation: employee at 7-eleven (lower), hustler location: anywhere people let them sleep status: single family: sarifya godwin (sister) strengths: multi-talented, charming, clever, adaptable, quick weaknesses: rebellious, antagonistic, reckless, impulsive, nihilistic character inspo: tba
BIOGRAPHY.
tw: neglect
born in the lower district of dallas-fortworth in close succession to their sister safiq. both of their children were a surprise and it resulted in them not being the greatest parents.
thought they tried their best, they often needed to work multiple jobs to make the bills and by the time they were home, they were too exhausted to parent properly.
that wasn't a problem in the long run, however, it ended up making tariq and safiya closer, often relying on each other to survive when they had no direction otherwise.
almost from the start tariq was hell on wheels, constantly getting into things, getting into fights, causing trouble, and trying to get away with it.
eventually tariq and safiya learned how to run cons together, getting themselves all the things they were missing out on in their impoverished household. it worked great, too, until safiya got locked up.
with tariq on their own, with no one to reign them in, they ended up diving further into the criminal underworld. the only real thing they gave their parents to be proud of was the fact that they graduated high school. after that, they left home for good and rarely came back.
they fell into the continued life of crime, continuing their cons and hustling products whether it was bootleg or replicated items, stolen treasures, scrap cybernetics, and occasional specialty substances.
their position at the seven eleven only helps them meet potential hits and customers, but they don't put much stock in the job. honestly, they are only around still because it's hard to find someone willing to come in and cover at the drop of a dime.
tariq is good at a lot of things- most being self taught or things they've picked up along the way. they've been hustling since a teenager so they've only gotten better with age. tariq is always trying to take it to the next level, constantly out and about, at social events, making sure they're always available.
they still do a lot of stupid stuff to get laughs out of people. also has a bad habit of picking fights with people that they don't know if they'll win. they are a scrappy kid but well aware that they aren't a match for everyone they antagonize- that’s why they're really good at running. they are often cracking jokes, flirting with anyone who will entertain them, they are aggressive when it comes to selling product, and they love to push buttons.
currently tariq doesn’t have an end goal, they just wants to keep hustling and having a good time. they do still drop by to see their parents and sister. other than that they're living their best life and trying to raise a little hell everywhere they go.
HEADCANONS.
they had a place of their own at one point but was never there and got evicted on accident so now their stuff is in storage and they couch surf or stay with sarifya.
more to come

Lead Battery Recycling in Adelaide: A Step Towards Sustainability
Lead-acid batteries are vital to powering vehicles, machinery, and renewable energy systems. However, they pose significant environmental risks if not disposed of properly due to their toxic components.lead battery recycling Adelaide plays a crucial role in managing these hazardous materials and supporting environmental sustainability.
The Importance of Lead Battery Recycling
Lead-acid batteries contain lead, sulfuric acid, and plastic, which can cause serious harm if they end up in landfills. When these materials leak into the ground, they contaminate the soil and water, posing a risk to both ecosystems and human health. Recycling ensures that these hazardous materials are managed safely while allowing valuable resources to be reused.
Key Benefits of Lead Battery Recycling
Environmental Protection: Proper recycling prevents toxic materials from contaminating the environment. By keeping lead, acid, and plastic out of landfills, recycling helps protect Adelaide’s soil and water supplies from harmful pollutants.
Resource Conservation: Lead is a valuable material that can be recycled indefinitely without losing its quality. Recycling lead batteries helps reduce the demand for new mining, conserving natural resources and reducing the environmental footprint of lead extraction.
Energy Savings: The process of recycling lead is significantly more energy-efficient compared to mining and processing new lead from ore. This energy savings helps lower greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to Adelaide’s sustainability efforts.
Economic Opportunities: The lead battery recycling industry creates jobs in collection, processing, and manufacturing. Many recycling facilities in Adelaide also offer cash for used batteries, providing a financial incentive for individuals and businesses to participate in the recycling process.
How Lead Battery Recycling Works
The recycling process for lead-acid batteries is highly efficient, with up to 99% of a battery's materials being recoverable. The process generally follows these steps:
Collection: Old batteries are collected from various sources, including homes, car workshops, and industrial sites. Recycling centers across Adelaide accept these batteries, ensuring they are handled safely.
Breaking and Separation: The collected batteries are broken apart, and their components (lead, plastic, and acid) are separated. This ensures that each material can be processed individually for reuse.
Lead Smelting and Refining: The lead is melted down and purified, ready to be used in new batteries or other lead-based products.
Plastic Recycling: The plastic casings are cleaned and processed into pellets that can be used to manufacture new battery casings or other plastic products.
Acid Treatment: The sulfuric acid is neutralized or converted into chemicals that can be used for industrial applications, ensuring that nothing is wasted.
Lead Battery Recycling Facilities in Adelaide
Adelaide is home to several recycling centers that specialize in lead battery recycling. Areas like Lonsdale serve as hubs for battery recycling, offering services for individuals and businesses alike. Many centers not only accept batteries for recycling but also offer cash for old batteries, making it easy and financially rewarding to recycle.

The Flash Season 9 episode 13 review
Last week, I made a post (https://www.tumblr.com/basilisk06/719046628704731136/its-been-over-a-week-so-i-think-i-can-post) about the final season of the flash. All but one episode, the last one. This will be my review of it. For the record, anything I say will not be used to be hateful towards the show or the crew and actors. I understand certain things that I say here could not have happened due to certain issues but I will say it because this is what I personally feel would have been better.
First off, make the finale longer. Make it like an hour and a half at the very least. The villains interacting in the first scene was amazing (though Godspeed’s actor having a beard makes no sense because when August Heart died by Thawne’s hand, he doesn’t have a beard) The only downsides is that they (minus Eobard and possibly Eddie) didn’t know who Savitar truly was. I read somewhere that Grant Gustin was with Covid when they were filming, but if only they used old footage and voice lines and stunt doubles to make the scene feel good. Also i imagine that the finale would have been better if more villains of the series had appeared. Like smaller speedsters like Trajectory from season 2 and The Rival from Season 3 Flashpoint, to a recently seen villains like Dark Flash/Bloodwork/ Ramsey Rosso and Red Death, Ryan Wilder. The bus metas, to torture Barry from the fact that he couldn’t save them, to the main villains of previous seasons, Devoe the Thinker from season 4, both Cicadas from season 5, Mirror Monarch from season 6 and 7, to Deathstorm from season 8. Hell, even add some of the lower metas and rogue gallery (for some examples of metas and rogues, look up ‘Top 340 on YouTube and pick the video with Superman about live action DC characters) to mess with Barry more. I know they probably didn’t have the budget for all of this, but I feel like it would’ve been better. And and the long awaited and teased Chronarch. Also I wished that they got Matt Letscher to return, and give Thawne some excuse that he could change faces whenever he wanted (to keep that line that he would kill Allegra with the face of her mentor, Nash Wells).
Next, I wish that when the speedsters are running, there lightning is the same color as it was before, but with a red energy encasing it. When the villains reveal themselves, I wish that more heroes returned for the (currently) last fight of the Arrowverse: Melissa Benoist as Supergirl (maybe others from her show too), some of the legends (to help wrap up that show since it ended on a cliffhanger and probably isn’t getting an 8th season), Jordan Fisher as Impulse (scheduling conflicts cause him to be absent from the finale), Keiynan Lonsdale as Kid flash (or better yet, have another actor play a future version in the actual flash suit since Barry is in space dealing with the Chronarch), Violet Beane as Jesse Chamber/ Jesse Quick (say that crisis and the new multiverse Oliver as the Spectre created help her find her way back) Vibe/Cisco Ramon (Carlos said he wanted to return in the finale but couldn’t due to scheduling conflicts), The Elongated Man/ Ralph Dibney ( imagine if we got to see Hartley Sawyer one last time, since his cancellation in season 7, he’s been off the grid) and more.
For the fight, I wish it had been, Impulse(Bart) and XS(Nora) against Savitar, mainly for him to see what he himself took from himself. Zoom against Quick/Jessie Chambers Wells, and Flash/ Dr Jay Garrick, since it would be ironic for him to see a speedster he had a hand in creating be faster than him and be the person he kidnapped and used as leverage to gain Barry’s speed, and Jay to use the ability he learned from his earth-90 counterpart against Zoom to show that strength and speed aren’t the only aspects of a powerful speedster. For Godspeed, I would say Flash/Kid Flash/(Future) Wallace ‘Wally’ West due to them being the faster of the other speedsters. For other villains, the ones I mentioned above, have them fight the heroes I also mentioned above as well, like Cisco, Ralph, and Allegra and Chester against The Reverse Flash, before he runs away to fight Barry.
Eddie (with blue lighting instead of red) and Barry would be fighting, but would be interrupted by Eobard, and Eddie see how he has become just as evil as The Reverse Flash, eventually leading to Eobard betraying Eddie and trying to steal the full power of the negative forces. We’d get to see the three chasing each other in the time stream, and eventually landing in the future, where Barry saves some people, and then we’d see a young Eobard Thawne, hateful at Barry for stealing his fame, or even Barry, allowing the past version of Eobard Thawne to save the crowd, before going back to the chase. Back into the timestream, we’d see the trio arrive in the past, on the night of the Particle Accelerator Explosion, and in order to save himself, we’d see Barry throw lightning, and strike himself, and run back into the fight. Eventually, imagine how yourselves, the villains would all be defeated, and Eddie and Barry would merge the forces like in the actual show (I think that’s how it happened) and the rest of the ending of the actual episode would be the same. Only we’d also see the people Barry struck with lightning in their suits, and then we’d end the show.
