The isekai boom happened because some Japanese guy decided that the French were evil for what they did to Françoise-Louise de La Baume Le Blanc de La Vallière wrote what he wanted: Japanese saving her and bringing enlightenment to totally-not-French barbarians; I never watched Familiar of Zero, but I remember that for some reason everyone wanted to write a fanfic of it in ff.net, so other Japanese felt the same way – it told them they can write whatever they want. Recently, there is Brazilian Miku Hatsune. Did the artist have a fetish? I did read a popular post and, while I thought it to be sanctimonious at first, reading a second time I realize that OP had a point, especially because of the problem of sexualization of foreigners, which is a big problem as mentioned above, so I see their point and wish it was under better circumstances. But without some artist deciding he could draw whatever he wanted, would we have so many people also realizing that and drawing Miku in their own cultures? It’s nothing short of a miracle, we’ve been in contact with so many different cultures, that I bet most didn’t even know they existed – it’s something so beautiful and started with a person realizing “I can draw what I want” and thousands of people around the world also realizing that. Would it controversial to say the world was made a slightly better place because some person decided “I can draw what I want”? Besides, have you seen the original Brazilian Miku, the one that inspired the trend, by ErinArtista and the one that made explode, by Doodly?

The rise of a Chinese gaming industry is beneficial because it’s an additional option to be in contact with different styles of massively marketed storytelling. Arknights is great in this aspect because I find its approach to worldbuilding much more relatable to the Global South, because it goes hard on the social effects of technological progress that are constantly glossed over in most Global North stories. But it still had that orientalist vibe, with the pseudo-Egyptian event, that was really doubleplusungood – what did they use to base that?

So, if you really care about representation, try to go out of your comfort zone. Pick a book, since they’re easier (but it can be anything, animation or live-action series/movies), from an author from a country that you never heard of (I remember I once picked a novel from Cape Verde, a small island nation at the coast of East Africa, it was fascinating how different their Portuguese was from Brazil’s). If you didn’t like or if it didn’t vibe with you, please, don’t force yourself, you shouldn’t do that out of obligation because if the author is an artist, they’ll understand. But, still, try it, you can have an experience that the latest American drama or Japanese shonen might not give you…or maybe not, there are a lot of factors that makes us interested in a story. And remember: putting people against walls doesn’t tend to work, if you push someone against the wall, it’s the wall that breaks. What will you do if the wall breaks?
