Angélique Kidjo Enters A New Era With Sunlight To My Soul

Angélique Kidjo is back with the Diane Warren-penned "Sunlight To My Soul." Afrobeats producer Shizzi is also part of the collaboration, with his supply of traditional African rhythms and supporting vocals from the Soweto Gospel Choir. The video celebrates life with dancing, hugs, and plenty of smiles from Kidjo and her dancers. The international singing icon released her 15th studio album, Mother Nature, in 2021. She collaborated with young African artists on MH, including Burna Boy, Mr. Eazi, and Yemi Alade. In 2023, she celebrated a four-decade career by kicking off a 40th-anniversary concert tour. Earlier this year, she debuted her new African Symphony project with arranger Derrick Hodge at the Kennedy Center.  "Sunlight In My Soul" begins a new era for Kidjo, who hails from Benin.  Kidjo is starting her next international tour on July 14th, which is also her birthday. Except for one show with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Meshell Ndegeocello will accompany her on select dates.

“Good morning, girls!” my husband greeted the girls from his place at the kitchen sink, where he was doing the dishes as I cooked breakfast for everyone.

“How does cinnamon French toast, scrambled eggs, bacon and toast sound?” I asked, smiling as I was met with much enthusiasm from the “triplets��� before they got busy with their morning chores- Aria began to empty the dishwasher, Evie took up the broom to sweep the kitchen and dining room and Elizabeth gathered up plates, silverware and napkins to set the table. “Coming right up!”

 “Elizabeth, today is that book fair you were telling us about a few weeks ago, right?” Peter asked her. “Put the catalogue at my placemat and we can look at what you want to get, alright?”

 “Alright, daddy!” The bald little girl was happy as she meticulously set the table, paying close attention to where she arranged the silverware before diving into her backpack and coming up with a book magazine, which she set at his placemat before returning to grab cups and get the plates down for me.

 I quickly served up breakfast- cinnamon French toast and scrambled eggs on one plate, thick slices of bacon and slices of buttered toast on another smaller plate, and little bowls of homemade applesauce. I kissed the heads of the girls as I served them and looked at my handsome husband with hooded eyes as I placed his plate down in front of him.

 “Thank you, sweetheart,” he said, tugging me down to kiss me. “Breakfast looks delicious!”

 “I should hope so,” I droned, sitting in my usual seat next to him. “I’d be downright ashamed if it didn’t turn out right!”

 “Little girl is coming over today, right?” Aria asked me.

 “Yes, she’ll be arriving in a few hours,” I answered, catching the gleeful look on my husband’s face. “James will drop her off before going to the airport with his husband for a game in Arizona. They want to bring her, but she has a little bit of a head cold and they don’t want to expose her to something else and end up with her getting any sicker. And I can give them their emergency key to the house, while I’m at it too.”

 Peter had copies of the house key made and gave copies to Adam, Benjamin, Caleb, Daniel, Ephriam, Frank, Gideon, Jackie, Sammi, Annette, Patricia, Barbara, Pamela, Cathy, Ryley and Michelle while they were over at the twins’ birthday party. He also had a key made up for James and Aaron to use in case of emergencies, only the key was somehow or other misplaced, sending my older husband into a frenzy as he practically tore the house in search of that key only to admit defeat and have another key made up.

 “Sounds good, sweetheart,” he hummed, looking up from his daughter’s book catalogue. “Okay Bitty, which books do you want?”

 “You can choose no more than ten book, alright Elizabeth?” I told her, getting a happy smile as she began pouring over the catalogue once more.

 “Lizz Lizz, we have the Harry Potter books, you can borrow them, if you want!” Aria offered.

 “I also have the entire collection- Order of the Phoenix, Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows I got at the bookstore during the midnight releases, so yeah, those books are like new, first edition,” I shrugged. “I also have those books in softcover edition, which I make it a point to read the entire series once a year.”

 “Wow.” The girls’ eyes were wide as stared at me in wonder.

 “You mean you’re that old?” Aria asked in utter amazement.

 “Watch it, Bluebells!” I scolded her. “Do you want to go to the slumber party tonight with Rebecca Mills?”

 Evie sent her older sister a glare that very clearly said, behave yourself!

 A knock sounded at the door, leading me to set aside the baby hat that I was busy crocheting for Baby Tommy. Mittens flitted around my feet, almost tripping me with a MEOW.

 “Mittens, you are such a silly kitty!” I laughed, opening the door. “Hi there little-”

 I froze at the sight of my father standing in the doorway.

 “Father, to what do I owe this pleasure?” I asked stiffly, subtly turning on the camera in my phone and setting it where I knew it would capture everything.

 “Mary Claire, we need to talk,” he simply said, jamming a foot into the doorframe so that I couldn’t slam the door in his face. “Drop the charges on my wife.”

 “That fucking gold digging bitch is not your wife!” I hissed, looking down to see Mittens in between my feet, glaring up at my father with such hate burning in her kitty eyes.

 “Priscilla is not my wife yet,” he snapped, trying to get inside onto to have me slam the door hard onto his foot. He jumped back with a loud yowl of pain, leaving me with enough room to shut the door in his face. “Mary Claire, please-!”

 “Sweetheart, who’s at the door?”

 I yelped and turned my head to see Peter coming out of the kitchen, having just dropped the girls off at school.

 “My father,” I whimpered, and his kind eyes grew hard. He moved me away from the door and flung it open, taking an intimidating step out towards my frantically backpedaling father.

 “Mr. Bradley, might I kindly suggest you leave?” he snarled out through gritted teeth. “You are distressing my pregnant wife. Now leave.”

 “Drop the charges against Priscilla and I will!” I scoffed at his words, knowing that the little hussy had sank her claws into his brain and had totally distorted what happened, making herself look like the victim.

 “That wasn’t a suggestion.” My husband grabbed him by the arm and threw him into his car. “Now leave.”
