But one day you find out there is a rat man inside the basement and you call the cops But the cops don't take it seriously So you call the Ghostbusters instead!

it IS really funny that the two recognized liverwort growth forms are ‘a moss with barely discernible, somewhat contested microscopic differences’ and ‘someone’s dropped scalloped potatoes’

Learning more about lichens has given my nature hikes a whole new dimension - finding this little hill absolutely covered in so many beautiful growths was so exciting! The last one I'm holding in my hand was found loose in my mom's backyard.

And a bonus patch of extremely happy liverwort! I mistook it for some kind of lichen at first, but learning it's a practically unchanged 473-million-year throwback to the earliest land plants was super cool!
Oh this makes me so happy. Lichens have totally rewired my brain, and made me more aware of little, beautiful details everywhere. I don't just find lichens anymore--I also notice cool mosses and liverworts and flowers and BUGS. It's just a joy to realize how not alone we ever really are. Or horrifying, I guess, depending on the perspective.

Everybody else is looking up at the big beautiful waterfall. Not me. I’m looking at the mud around the bottom. for liverworts.

Snakewort (Conocephalum salebrosum)!! My favorite, super sweet-smelling liverwort! Always a joy to find on a wet rock by a stream.

Some spare bryos and a lichens 4 u, ma'am
Nerd talk:
Left photo has numerous spp. of bryophytes (Porella sp., Frullania sp., Orthotrichum sp., Syntrichia sp.) as well as some foliose lichens (which I can't name bc I suck at lichens!)
Right photo is a sick graphidaceae lichen (graph = write in latin, the lichens are named such bc the black apothecia/fruiting bodies look like writing!)

The endive pellia - Apopellia ediviifolia - is a very normal-looking, thallose thalloid liverwort for most of the year, but in autumn, it develops these fancy, repeating Y-shaped bifurcations <3
In the top-left of the image above you can see some lobes that haven't got their autumnal frills yet.

Graphs showing iNaturalist observations for Apopellia endiviifolia peaking in the autumn, when it is both eyecatchingly fancy and easily identified. While observations of the - usually very similar looking - Pellia epiphylla are recorded more evenly through the year.

my brother got me this tumbler with a bunch of mushroom/fungus illustrations all over it and it’s the only tumbler I will accept in my life but the designer put one (1) graphic on it that’s actually a thalloid liverwort. no larger than a quarter on the actual product but I see it and I know

Hi ! Do you know Marchantia polymorpha ? Apparently it grows along with lichens, I keep looking for informations about this plant like its geographical distribution but everything I find is too vague. Do you know about any resources for plants like these ?
Liverworts! I don't know jack about liverworts, except that yes, they do often grow alongside lichens, and they're bryophytes. I too would like to know more about them, but also don't know where to find good resources on them.for geographical distributions, I recommend iNaturalist or GBIF. I also trust the Australian National Botanic Gardens website for lichen info, so I assume their bryophyte info page is similarly reliable:
https://www.anbg.gov.au/bryophyte/classification-identification.html
If any of my followers have better resources, please let me know. Here's a picture I took of some liverworts for good measure

They are growing on a Medieval castle wall in the German Alps alongside some very good moss and fern.

Exploring the miniature world in ancient Scottish woods - Scotland 2024 trip Part 2
A open paddock with Urquhart Woods in the background On Google Maps, any place that has “forest” or “woods” is like a beacon to me. While we were scanning through Google Maps along the A82 highway beside the Loch Ness, a place of interest called Urquhart Woods showed up and no doubt piqued my curiosity. Urquhart Woods at Drumnadrochit, is according to woodlandtrust.org.uk, is one of the best…
