Belladonna review

Signa and Death are back to solve another murder, though the circumstances are more precarious and their opponent far more dangerous. Toward the ending of the last book, I wasn't sure what would be next for the two of them, but the death at the end of Belladonna answered that question, and this book picks up immediately from that scene.

Like in the first book, there are two main, but related, plotlines in Foxglove. The first is the murder and Elijah's subsequent arrest, which both Signa and Blythe are distraught about. The second plot is with Fate, Death's brother, who is convinced Signa is his long lost love, Life, and is desperate to get her back and fuck shit up for Death (it isn't a love triangle by a long shot). The plot with Fate definitely felt more prominent, probably since he was sticking his nose in everything and (usually) making it worse.

We definitely get to see more of Signa's powers in this book. Over the course of the last book she really came into them and is now confident in who she is. With that settled, Signa is able to exert control over her abilities and even experiments with expanding that control and improving her capabilities. She also has the opportunity to try out some new powers, though her control over these new ones is spotty and something she struggles with throughout the book. Fate's entrance and his suggestion/revelation that Signa is a reincarnated Life brings the potential for new, life-giving powers, which Signa struggles with as much as she once struggled with the idea of reaper powers.

Signa also gets a minor third plot that involves Foxglove Manor and her family's past there. I was glad to see the manor after it had been built up so much in Signa's mind. Most of this book lacks the same gothic feel as Belladonna, but Foxglove Manor definitely fit the bill. It's spooky, dark, on the sea, is haunted. It's the perfect gothic setting. I also liked that Signa was able to fill in some of the gaps about her parents and get a little bit of closure there. I hope we get to see more of Foxglove Manor in the next book!

I liked Death in the first book and wasn't sure how things would go in this one with Blythe no longer being poisoned. As expected, he isn't around as much as he was in Belladonna, and I definitely missed having him around as much. He remains as protective and funny as he was in the first one, and we get to see more of him encouraging Signa to use her powers and come into herself, even if those powers include ones from Life. I did like how supportive he was and how much he worked to try and clear Elijah's name simply because it was something that mattered to Signa.

Fate takes the place as the main mythical figure in human form in this one and he is Death's opposite in every way. He is bright and golden and in love with opulence but he is also fickle and angry and unwilling to be told no. While we do get to see some softer moments, largely when he is trying to manipulate people, by and large Fate is someone who is both used to getting his way and is willing to ruin everyone's lives when he's upset.

Blythe gets her own POV in this book. She's less bratty now and with her health returned to her, she's determined to help solve the murder and clear her father's name. At the same time, Blythe begins noticing there's odd things happening in Thorn Grove, with her, and with Signa, and begins to get suspicious. Blythe definitely takes charge in more than a few situations and is willing to use all her social skills and wiles to figure things out. That being said, she's not as versed in the realm of weird things as Signa was when we met her, and so Blythe sometimes reaches the wrong conclusions and trusts the wrong people, but she does have a good heart and makes strong decisions based on what she knows.

One thing that was frustrating to me was how much tension could've been solved in this book if characters had simply sat down and talked with one another. And by characters I mean Signa and Blythe. Blythe's suspicions are raised on numerous subjects and, having been kept in the dark by Signa, sometimes jumps to the wrong conclusions and trusts the wrong people. It was frustrating because as a reader, I know what's really going on and why Signa was doing/had done certain things and I wanted to shake Blythe. Yet at the same time I was also aware that Blythe was working with limited information because Signa was terrified of being rejected by her and so Blythe's actions are totally reasonable given the information she had. Miscommunication is not something I tend to like in books, but at least it actually makes sense here and I was able to see both sides, which I feel like is a failing of a lot of miscommunication plots.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and the plotlines. It was interesting to see things from Blythe's POV and have her be more of an active agent in this one. Fate was an interesting character to bring in and I definitely don't like him, but I'm intrigued to see where things go with him in book 3. I would've liked to see more Death though and I hope he and Signa have more interactions in Wisteria (I suspect we will, but who knows).

1. Talbot is DEFINITELY entitled. I think he actually thinks he’s hot shit. And I mean, he’s not exactly WRONG. He’s a child prodigy and was plucked straight out of college and knew exactly what he wanted and what he needed to do with ENDLESS ambition to discover untapped human potential. Especially considering how fucked getting a medical degree in the 1830′s was and assuming he timed himself right and went as soon as he could he started his preceptorship at 18, went to college at 19, and graduated at 21 (because you had to be 21 to graduate) and he became head chemist in 7 years, motherfucker was 28 are you kidding?? He didn’t even get real proper thorough medical training and he created a chemical that let people work harder and not need sleep in 1845!!! He’s brilliant!! Keep in mind, i think he does genuinely care, and the feelings of people matter to him to at least some degree, but he thinks he’s the greatest thing since sliced bead, which hadnt even been invented yet skjdbgsd

2. He loves flowers. Aside from the obvious pustula flowers, he just in general loves them! Especially foxglove, which he knows basically everything about because of his fixation on it as a kid. But i think if a romantic partner gave him flowers as a gift even as a man in the 1800s he’d be fucking delighted especially if they were weird or had weird properties if you ate them or some shit sdkjbgsd He keeps some flowers he picked in a vase in his workshop that he takes care of every day :) 

3. He values himself only by his knowledge. I think what lead to his self experimentation and eventual downfall was his frustration that he was hitting roadblocks with working with the pustula nectar. I think that not only infuriated him but it was incredibly damaging to his self esteem because he was so used to being told he was a genius and special and was capable of discovering anything. He’s a gifted kid with burnout 1800′s edition. Especially considering how sparse test subjects were. Capturing killers and experimenting on them wasnt sustainable considering that he had to inject himself with Blight to be strong enough to even do it, but once he did the experiments the killers would be super charged and would now be an even match which is why they always escaped, so after he did his tests he had to immediately DIP or he’d die, and like his lore established The Entity does not heal him, and I think he wouldnt be sure enough to know if The Entity would bring him back if he died. So when there’s no test subjects... and you’re desperate for answers because its all you think you’re good at... turn inward. I mean... imagine how it must have felt to not be able to understand how to unlock doors between worlds with the serum after ALL OF THAT. everything that you’ve done and sacrificed in the pursuit of human enlightenment. Damning yourself to eternal torture. Hurting all those people, even if they were all enemies. How do you live with yourself? maybe you dont.

Summary: Y/N was content living a normal life. Well, as normal as her life could be with the power to stun and cause death (in extreme conditions) with just a touch of her hand. Let’s just say gloves are a girl’s best friend, not diamonds. When the Winter Soldier surfaced, she was called in by Director Nick Fury to assist Captain America in fighting against a corrupt SHIELD. To the world, she is known as Foxgloves, the girl with poisons touch. To her team, she’s a mystery, coming out of nowhere, with her amazing combat skills and poisonous touch, to be recruited into their little group of super humans. Nobody knew of her origin, until Helmut Zemo’s plans consist of more than exposing the Winter Soldier as Howard and Martha Stark’s killer.  Warnings: Mild cursing. A/N: Hey there! I awoke with a start, let’s just say being whisked into a meeting with Secretary of State Ross wasn’t what I expected after stepping out of my room. I made my way downstairs to the conference room, nibbling on a protein bar. I caught up with Steve and Wanda, exchanging greetings. “Do you know what this is about?” I asked in my thick, accented voice. Wanda links her arm with mine and says “No clue, I just want to go back to my room, maybe sleep for a year,” she pauses “or a hundred.” We both start laughing while we walk through the glass doors, stopping instantly as we are met with the serious faces of the rest of the team.

“Glad to see you cared to join us Y/N,” starts Sam “I’m honestly surprised to see you among the living at a shocking” he checks the clock, “12 AM.” I glare at him as I take my seat at the end of the table. “Fuck off, Sam, you’re making me sound like an actual sloth.” I snap back. “Wait, you aren’t actually a sloth?” he gasps, “What about a bear? I think you should be getting ready for hibernation.” Sam smiles smugly, amused with my lack of patience without my morning coffee. “Says the guy who ca- “I am cut off by Tony standing up and looking pointedly at the two of us. “Will you two please stop arguing like children and be serious for once.” I give him a once over, noting his tense posture and the stern voice. Sam and I look at each other and nod. Tony sighs, “Okay, excellent. Mr. Secretary please begin.” The pepper haired man at the head of the table nods. “5 years ago, I had a heart attack. I dropped right in the middle of my batting swing. Turned out, it was the best round of my life because after 13 hours of surgery and a triple bypass…” I tune him out, not wanting to hear about the haughty man’s dumb golf accident, being more interested in the pitcher of water in front of me.

“New York.” A clip from the Battle of New York begins playing, gaining my attention. “Washington DC. Sokovia. Lagos.” The most recent of the clips causes Wanda to look away, I shoot her a reassuring smile. I know she blames herself for the building collapsing, it’s not her fault she was never taught how to fully control her powers up until now. “Okay, that’s enough.” Halts Steve. Ross nods at his assistant and says, “For the past 4 years, you operated with unlimited power and no supervision. That's an arrangement the governments of the world can no longer tolerate. But I think we have a solution.” He slides over a thick book to Wanda and begins walking around the table. “The Sokovia Accords. Approved by 117 countries. It states, that the Avengers shall no longer be a private organization. Instead, they'll operate under the supervision of a United Nations Panel, only when and if that Panel deems it necessary.” He stops next to Steve as he begins, staring at the table “The Avengers were formed to make the world a safer place. I feel we’ve done that.” A moment of silence passes before Secretary Ross asks “Tell me Captain, do you know where Thor and Banner are right now?” I glance over at Tony, who looks like he’s trying to shove his fist into his mouth and disappear into his chair at the same time. “If I misplaced a couple of 30 megaton nukes you can bet there’d be consequences.” He walks back to the head of the table while saying “Compromise. Reassurance. That’s how the world works. Believe me, this is the middle ground.” Rhodey breaks his silence by saying “So, there are contingencies.” “Three days from now, the UN meets in Vienna to ratify the Accords.” Steve glances back at Tony, while Tony looks at the ground. ‘Stark what did you do?’ was my only thought. Secretary Ross tells us to “talk it over” and starts to leaves. I stop him, asking “And if we come to a decision you don’t like?” He looks pointedly at me, while I glare up at him. “Then you retire.” With that, he leaves, leaving the rest of us to think over the news.

Tony gets up first and leaves the room. Shortly after, the rest of us follow him up into the living area. I excuse myself and go to my room, changing into something that isn’t my pajamas. I slip on some denim shorts and a casual white tee with a faux leather jacket on top. I slip my gloves back on and make my way to the elevators, tying my sneakers on the way down. As soon as the doors open I hear, “So let’s say we agree to this thing. How long is it gonna be before they LoJack us like a bunch of common criminals?” I step out and remark under my breath “I sure love debate team.” Natasha looks over, acknowledging my presence. Scanning the room, I see Steve reading the at least 2-inch-thick book, Wanda and Vison on the couch next to him, Tony lounging on the one near the kitchenette with his hand over his face, Natasha next to him, and Sam and Rhodey standing behind Steve, bickering about signing the Accords or not. “117 countries want to sign this.” Begins the older of the two men, “117, Sam, and you’re just like, ‘No, that’s cool. We got it- “Sam cuts him off. “How long are you gonna play both side?” Vison intervenes, thankfully. “I have an equation.” Everyone turns to the purple man, waiting for him to explain. “Oh, this will clear it up.” remarks Sam. “In the eight years since Mr.Stark announced himself as Iron Man the number of known enhances persons has grown exponentially.” He begins, “During the same period the number of potentially world ending events has risen at a commensurate rate.” Steve’s voice asks, “Are you saying it’s our fault?” Vison looks over at him and replies, “I’m saying there may be a causality.” He pauses, thinking over his next words. “Our very strength invites challenge. Challenge incites conflict. And conflict breeds catastrophe. Oversight. Oversight is not an idea that can be dismissed out of hand.” “Boom.” Comments Rhodey, looking over at Sam.

Natasha pipes up, “Tony,” he looks at her” “you are being uncharacteristically non-hyperverbal.” “It’s because he’s already made up his mind.” I say, causing Tony to look over at me. “Boy, you know me so well.” He says, getting up. “Actually, I’m nursing an electromagnetic headache. That’s what’s going on, Y/N. It’s just pain. It’s discomfort.” He grabs a coffee mug, frowning at the sink, “Who’s putting coffee grounds in the disposal?” he turns around with the French press, “Am I running a bed and breakfast for a biker gang?” He stops, pulling out his phone and casting the photo of a teenage boy in a park. Sighing, he says “Oh, that’s Charles Spencer, by the way. He’s a great kid. Computer engineering degree, 3.6 GPA, had a floor-level gig at Intel planned for the fall. But first, he wanted to put a few miles on his soul before he parked it behind a desk. See the world. Maybe be of service. Charlie didn’t want to go to Vegas or Fort Lauderdale, which is what I would do. He didn’t go to Paris or Amsterdam, which sounds fun. He decided to spend his summer building sustainable housing for the poor.” ‘Wow,’ I think, looking down at the floor and playing with the hem of my glove, ‘I don’t like where this is going’. “Guess where. Sokovia.” spits Tony causing Wanda and Vison to look down. I make my way over and sit next to the brunette, slinging my arm around her waist, pulling her into my side. Wanda is like the little sister I never had, but always wanted. I’d never let anything happen to her. “He wanted to make a difference, I suppose. We won’t know because we dropped a building on him while we were kicking ass.” He takes a sip from his blue mug, “There’s no decision-making process here. We need to be put in check. Whatever form that takes, I’m game. If we can’t accept limitations, if we’re boundary-less, we’re no better than the bad guys.”

I begin to tune him out, focusing on everyone else in the room. Steve says something, but I don’t hear. After a few more exchanges between Steve, Tony, and Rhodey, the billionaire walks over to Steve. “When I realized what my weapons were capable of in the wrong hands, I shut it down and stopped manufacturing.” Steve turns towards him, obviously annoyed. “Tony, you chose to do that. If we sign this, we surrender our right to choose.” He turns to the rest of us, “What if this panel sends us somewhere we don’t think we should go?” Natasha looks lost in thought, probably torn. I can see the benefits of signing but the cons outweigh it, in my opinion. “What if there is somewhere we need to go and they don’t let us? We may not be perfect, but the safest hands are still our own.” Tony’s raspy voice says, “If we don’t do this now, it’s gonna be done to us later. That’s the fact. That won’t be pretty.” Wanda lifts her head, “You’re saying they’ll come for me.” The animatronic voice of Vison reassures her. “Maybe Tony’s right.” everyone in the room turns to the red-head, “If we have one hand on the wheel, we can still steer. If we take it off-“ “Aren’t you the same woman who told the government to kiss her ass a few years ago?” Sam stares at Natasha incredulously. “I’m just reading the terrain.” She replies, hesitantly. “We have made some very public mistakes. We need to win their trust back.” Of course, Tony’s cocky attitude breaks through and I ignore him. Steve’s phones buzzes and he leaves. I trail after, concerned. ‘He never gives up a fight this easily” I think as I follow him down the stairs. I don’t say anything, I can tell he doesn’t want to talk about it.
