Tumblr media
“...This is a coffee house?”
It was a coffee house, more specifically, the one that was close to the college campus Blue went too. The cafe was a store merged in between a wall of buildings and such, some that does give the vibes of residential and parking. Put Blue decided to park right in front of the cafe.
“Wow, really? Nooooo” the sarcasm, as always, as Blue turned the ignition to the car off. “I thought it was a public outhouse.”
An awkward laugh left your mouth as you got out of the car to follow after her, looking around to see if anyone was out at this hour. It wasn’t that late, but it was late enough to wear the coffee house closed and no one on the street you were on. To be honest you thought she lived in the dorms on campus, as every college student does ... .well every other does?
“Sorry this isn’t as big and elaborate as the manors you're used to.” Blue came around to your side, her hand grabbing the hood of your jacket and flipping over your head, “Worried about being seen in such a place?”
“No- that's not!” you blurted out, you can hear Blue laughter as she walked towards the building's back door. “I just thought you lived in the dorms…or at least an apartment.”
“This is an apartment.” Blue said matter-a-factly as she unlocked a side door to the building.
“...this is a coffee house-”
“With” with a swoosh, revealed not the interior of the cafe but a set of stairs going up. “A studio on top.”
“...What” was all that came out of your confused mouth, you can feel the cheeks of your face getting hot.
“The place is a two story building yet the actual cafe is only one story. I rented out the top part.” With that, Blue began walking up the stairs. “You coming or nah?”
After a moment awkwardly standing still, you yelled“I am!” as you chased after to follow her
“This is-”
“Nice? Lovely? Small? Cramped?”
“You could have stopped at nice.”
It was nice, well lived in (a mess). It was a studio like she said. But it took up the whole second floor of the building. And for someone who only moved a few months ago, fully furnished with all the fixings a good apartment has.
A full living space set with a large tv screen with a console, and comfortable living room furniture. On the opposite side of the space was a full kitchen that isn't cramped together there's a whole kitchen island??. Along with a bathroom that was larger than even yours back at the manor.
On one wall of the place is full of large windows with a patio out decorated patio chairs and tables. She even has a whole treadmill. What the hell, even with Gotham's apparent low rent because of the…activities, this studio was a little too good for a college student who, from Pink’s perspective, doesn’t work outside of being a tutor for a few hours a week.
“I like it”
“Well I wasn’t asking if you did or didn’t” the older girl bluntly as she climbed up the stairs of the loft bed where you were where is she getting her money, like seriously??
“Why do you have to be so defensive” you whined a bit as you grabbed the glass of water she brought to you, “I was trying to be nice”
“Hmm” she only replied back as she flopped on the bed in front of you. You yourself were on a beanbag chair in the lofted part of the studio.
There was, what you felt like, an awkward silence, as you just looked around the apartment and taking sips from your cup. Blue was silent on her bed, you couldn’t tell what she was even thinking since she was facing away from you. Even then, you didn’t know what to say or talk about
Well you did…you just didn’t want to talk about it.
“Y’know, I’m not going to make you talk about how your folks just basically abandoned you at my college,”
Great
“Nor how you adamantly don’t want me to drop you off.”
Freaking great
“Butttt” She pushed her body up the bed “What we can do is have you take a bath and get out of that uniform.” You looked back up to her as she began moving up off the bed,
“I’ll wash it for you so you have a uniform to wear tomorrow when I drop you off back.” Blue continued as she walked back down the stairs, she paused mid stair and turned back towards you.
“Are you coming down orrrr”
“Ah-” you hadn’t realized you were just staring at her stupidly as she walked off the loft, you quickly chugged the glass of water as you got up, “I’m-ack- right behind you!”
“Girl don’t choke on water, that would be such a sad way to go.” ♡
“This show is stupid.”
“You need a tutor in fucking shapes and numbers, you don’t get to call something stupid.”
“HEY”
After several hours, the living room of Blue’s apartment was a mess, even more of a mess than it was before.
After a nice shower and begging to get to wear her satin pjs along with ordering a few greasy pizzas for delivery, you relented and let her pick what trash TV show to watch.
The older one was on the couch munching on sides while you were on the ground in front watching the trash TV Blue selected for you two to watch.
“Why give your partner an ultimatum of ‘either go on this show and date other people and get married to me at the end or get married to me right now or we’re done.”
“Cause people are dumb” she answered you while eating one of the side pastas you also begged her to get. “Dumb dumb dumb.”
“But then” you continued, getting more confused, “some get mad that their spouse is like ‘dating’ other people on the show, isn’t that the whole point??”
“Mmmm that's what I like about it. I don’t even know if any of the relationships on this show even work out-”
“So why go on the show??” you asked dramatically as you poured another cup of a sugary beverage for yourself, “People on this show love misery.”
“My type of show.”
“Yeah,” you agreed back. “You would like it” you said the last bit quieter.
Blue still heard you, from the way you could feel her pushing her with her foot. “Heyy, what does that supposed to mean?” she demanded, still pushing up against you.
“I’m just saying. There’s a reason why people like you” turning back towards her as you said the last word, you can now see the annoyed look on her face, “would like this show.”
“..And what exactly are people like me?” she asked, clocking her head to the side.
“Oh you know” you could feel an evil evil joke coming up in your mind. “Miserable so they crave the misery of other people to enjoy in their empty empty heart-” you couldn't even finish your sentence before you felt deadweight drop on top of you.
“Oh I'm MISERABLE huh??” Blue hissed out as she put her full bodyweight in full use. “What else am I hmm??” You struggled underneath her trying to get from underneath her, yet even in your struggle you continued
“Oh, I don’t know” you choked out, still twisting and turning. “Just an all around HATER”. Blue gasped to that as she continued to lay on top of you with ease,
“I have never heard or seen you be happy once. Well, only when that kid tripped and fell-” you couldn't finish that sentence since Blue decided it was an appropriate time to jab you in the stomach, making you lose the air from your body.
“He ate shit in front of us OF COURSE it was funny” she said, excusing her action from that day.
“And a regular nice tutor wouldn't be attacking her students like this!” you restored once you filled your lungs back with air.
“A student,” she began as her hands went to your face and started pinching your cheeks. “ wouldn’t be so rude to her tutor! I thought you would have some respect.” she clicked her tongue as she let go of your face. She got up off you at that and you scurried away before sticking your tongue out at her.
“You're not that much older than me, y’know?”
“And yet, I’m the adult and you're” she pointed her finger right in your face “not”
“...I'm so calling the cops on you”
“With what phone, Pink? Oh okay YEAH.”
There was a brief moment of pause as you breathed in and out hard, Blue herself didn’t even seem tired after that attack.
Even though your body lacked the oxygen, you couldn't stop yourself from busting out in laughter, which left Blue even more confused. “Heyy” she asked, getting back into your space and pointing at you again “What's so funny?”
“Nothing nothing,” you said as your laughter died down to giggles. “It's just, the first time in a while I had….. fun like this”
“....oh my god are you some sort of loner?”
“Oh my god Blue. I can’t have one nice sentimental moment with you.” “Why are you getting sentimental with me if you don't have friends??”
“I-..” you stopped talking, instead you brought your knees to your chest. Looking up back at Blue, you didn’t see any anger or annoyance. Well you did but youre pretty sure that's just her face.
“I don’t really have people to call close friends here y'know? The only ones I talk to are in my club. I feel” you continued, turning away from the older girl,
“they just pity me. I was forced to join the club by the counselor. Outside of normal club activities, each time they bring me along I feel like they do it out of necessity rather than cause they like me.”
Blue didn’t say anything, instead she went back on the couch and adorned a more comfortable position, her gaze still on you.
You didn’t know if you should continue, to be honest you didn't want to. Whatever perspective she has of you, you didn’t want it to change. Change to a sad pathetic nobody, the way that everyone in this city who knows, looks at you.
“...I”
The sound of constant ringing came out of nowhere, ruining the emotionally awkward moment.
Blue looked around, finding her phone on the ground near her. You didn’t get a chance to see what the caller id was, but it was probably someone not highly regarded to her with the face Blue pulled when she read her screen.
She immediately declined the call with an annoyed groan leaving her mouth. She didn’t even have a chance to put the phone down before it began to ring again.
“...If it’s important-”
“NO- no it's not. It’s just some annoying insect of a male from my class.” she revealed as she declined the call again and completely shit her phone off.
“Oh?” a mischievous grin came on your face, one that Blue did not like, “Boy troubles?”
“Don’t even start” she warned as she glared back at you, but it was too good not to continue
“I honestly didn’t take you going for guys your age to be honest” you admitted, which gave Blue an extreme pause as she stared wide at you.
“What-”
“I picture you sucking the life and money from some wealthy 80 year old. And then live the rest of your time and money ruining the life of his children.”
You peeked and saw Blue’s eye twitched. “And then move onto the next 80 year old when that money is up.” you giggled out.
Blue moves her hand to her chin thinking, “...hmmm, you do make a good point.”
“Oh my god are you actually-”
“How old is your dad, Pink?”
You could hear the sounds of Pink’s soft snoring from the pillow and blanket swamped nest she made on your couch. Well, soft is putting it lightly considering you could hear it from all the way from the kitchen. You were packing the leftover food in the fridge.
You may have overdid it with the ordering, you thought to yourself as you looked at all the leftover pizza and sides hogging your fridge. You didn’t even care for pizza all that.
Well, you didn’t care for food in general all that either. You are so going to force Pink to take some of this shit home. She was the one who even wanted this in the first place.
You huffed as you closed the fridge door, you can feel in your bones the tiredness. It wasn’t alot that you were physically exhausted. Mentally, yeah all the time, you were dealing with alot of stupid things.
You dragged yourself over to the nest couch and dropped next to Pink. She used the covers from your bed to build this mess, so this was really your only choice.
The TV was now at a lower volume than before, still playing your trashy television show. You had to compromise with Pink with having it on, apparently she can only sleep in complete silence. That freak.
You turned towards her, she was wearing your headphones when she slept. They had a noise canceling feature on there so she couldn’t hear the TV period.
Maybe you could raise the volume up a bit more, you thought. You probably would have if a heavy yawn hadn’t left your mouth.
Yeah maybe not tonight. Or morning? What time was it?
You looked around for your phone before finding it on the ground near the couch. Is it dead? No, when did you turn it off?
2.14am, fuck and you have to bring her to school in the morning too? You are not going to wake up early enough if you go to sleep now.
You groaned, guess no sleep for you right now. You can skip your classes for the next day. Honestly most of them you can just look online for the notes, all for one class-
Fuck.....Tim.
Some sick curiosity gotten to you as you open you and Tim’s chat log.
This dude texted you multiple after turning your phone off… none of which was asking about the class you two were in. The whole reason why you even gave him your number.
You clicked your tongue scrolling through the numerous messages of him asking your questions about your day and yourself. Like always. At this hour too? What does he take you for? A booty call?
Tim: I have a little brother too y'know, maybe your sister knows each other from school?
…the fuck?
………You both do frequent the college campus alot. Though you have her wear your hoodie to hide her face.
Even if the media hardly ever covers her, you don’t want people to know about a rich billionaire's daughter’s daily schedule.
Though, it is strange that he didn’t recognize his own sister. Don’t they still live together?
.........
….Maybe you should stop thinking.
You turned to face the TV screen again, the TV show you put on going well past the point you remember. Doesn’t matter, noise is noise.
Anything to take your mind off the damn stuffed animal that was standing on the end of the couch nest.
You felt the shift of the couch, then suddenly the heat of another body came on the right side of you.
“Aww she’s a clinger~”
“Opal I swear to all fucks-” The little being giggled as it emerged from whatever dark corner is came from. It lazily floated near the two of you, it looked around expectedly before slouching it shoulders. “And you save me no pizza? That’s is so mean of you”
“I will grill you and feed you to dogs” you hissed out to the thing, you really didn;t feel like hearing what the little shit had to say.
“Wow, so harsh.” Opal said bluntly, before floating away from the living room to the kitchen. It’s floating tinkling sounds dimming down as it moved away from you.
As if it made as much sense as breathing, Opal’s body fazed through the fridge door and after a moment it emerged with a slice of pizza. That greedy little thing- IT DOESN’T EVEN NEED TO EAT
“What are you even doing here? Are you supposed to be attached to that new girl?” you asked as you watched it munch on the cold pizza
“Like the parasite you are?”
“Damn who shit in your bowl this morning?” Opal quipped back in between bites, “Anyways~, there’s too many people out hunting for her. She’s too fresh to be out for the time being”
You stared at Opal, waiting for whatever it's going on about. Considering it’s with you right now and not with that Pearl is telling. You sighed out, its stupid for her and you in the same way, to be in this city anyways.
“Why even put a magical girl out in this city when there’s already like 7 bitches in tight suits prancing around?”
“Well, now we have two magical girls!” Opal cheered as he finished the pizza.
“I’m not a magical girl anymore Opal-”
“We just gave you a little timeout~”
“Yeah, uh huh. All the ‘missions’” you said raising your hands to make quotation marks “has been me moving to this shit city and enrolling in college. Such the exhilarating life a save the world” you mocked
“Well, you should be happy to know that-”
…oh god no
“You have a new mission!”
“NO-” you jumped up a little, causing you and Opal to freeze on the spot. You two carefully listened for Pink’s disturbed breathing to go back to normal.
Opal sighed out as it flew away from you two and instead placed itself ontop of the TV.
“Honestly, the dramatics do not fit you.” “Eat shit Opal, the app didn’t even send me anything.”
“That’s cause your phone was off you idiot” Opal bit back.
You groaned out again. “Between school and tutoring sessions and all I’m benign stretched fucking thin right now-” “We just need you to send a message to a certain robin birdy~”
“...what type of message?”
Opal let out another giggle, this time a giggle that couldn’t be labeled as kind or human.
“Just something to scare him and his flock.” you felt a chill go down your bones as it continued, you hated how with the little companion gets like this. It means you have to get your hands dirty.
“Gotham needs a magical girl, and we can’t have them interfering with that.”

On the outskirts of Austin, Texas, what began as a fringe experiment has quickly become central to the city’s efforts to reduce homelessness. To Justin Tyler Jr., it is home.
Mr. Tyler, 41, lives in Community First! Village, which aims to be a model of permanent affordable housing for people who are chronically homeless. In the fall of 2022, he joined nearly 400 residents of the village, moving into one of its typical digs: a 200-square-foot, one-room tiny house furnished with a kitchenette, a bed and a recliner.
The village is a self-contained, 51-acre community in a sparsely populated area just outside Austin. Stepping onto its grounds feels like entering another realm.
Eclectic tiny homes are clustered around shared outdoor kitchens, and neat rows of recreational vehicles and manufactured homes line looping cul-de-sacs.
There are chicken coops, two vegetable gardens, a convenience store, art and jewelry studios, a medical clinic and a chapel.
Roads run throughout, but residents mainly get around on foot or on an eight-passenger golf cart that makes regular stops around the property.
Mr. Tyler chose a home with a cobalt-blue door and a small patio in the oldest part of the village, where residents’ cactus and rock gardens created a “funky, hippie vibe” that appealed to him. He arrived in rough shape, struggling with alcoholism, his feet inflamed by gout, with severe back pain from nearly 10 years of sleeping in public parks, in vehicles and on street benches.
At first, he kept to himself. He locked his door and slept. He visited the clinic and started taking medication. After a month or so, he ventured out to meet his neighbors.
“For a while there, I just didn’t want to be seen and known,” he said. “Now I prefer it.”
Between communal meals and movie screenings, Mr. Tyler also works at the village, preparing homes for the dozen or more people who move there each month.
In the next few years, Community First is poised to grow to nearly 2,000 homes across three locations, which would make it by far the nation’s largest project of this kind, big enough to permanently house about half of Austin’s chronically homeless population.
Tiny-home villages for people who have been homeless have existed on a small scale for several decades, but have recently become a popular approach to addressing surging homelessness. Since 2019, the number of these villages across the country has nearly quadrupled, to 124 from 34, with dozens more coming, according to a census by Yetimoni Kpeebi, a researcher at Missouri State University.
Mandy Chapman Semple, a consultant who has helped cities like Houston transform their homelessness systems, said the growth of these villages reflects a need to replace inexpensive housing that was once widely available in the form of mobile home parks and single room occupancy units, and is rapidly being lost. But she said they are a highly imperfect solution.
“I think where we’re challenged is that ‘tiny home’ has taken on a spectrum of definitions,” said Chapman Semple. Many of those definitions fall short of housing standards, often lacking basic amenities like heat and indoor plumbing, which she said limits their ability to meet the needs of the population they intend to serve.
But Community First is pushing the tiny home model to a much larger scale. While most of its homes lack bathrooms and kitchens, its leaders see that as a necessary trade-off to be able to creatively and affordably house the growing number of people living on Austin’s streets. And unlike most other villages, many of which provide temporary emergency shelter in structures that can resemble tool sheds, Community First has been thoughtfully designed with homey spaces where people with some of the highest needs can stay for good. No other tiny home village has attempted to permanently house as many people.
Austin’s homelessness rate has been rapidly worsening, and the city’s response has whipped back and forth... In October [2023], the official estimate put the number of people living without shelter at 5,530, a 125 percent increase from two years earlier. Some of that rise is the result of better outreach, but officials acknowledged that more people have become homeless. City leaders vowed to build more housing, but that effort has been slowed by construction delays and resistance from residents.
Meanwhile, outside the city limits, Community First has been building fast. [Note from below the read more: It's outside city limits because the lack of zoning laws keeps more well-off Austin residents from blocking the project, as they did earlier attempts to build inside the city.] In a mere eight years, this once-modest project has grown into a sprawling community that the city is turning to as a desperately needed source of affordable housing. The village has now drawn hundreds of millions of dollars from public and private sources and given rise to similar initiatives across the country.
This rapid growth has come despite significant challenges. And some question whether a community on the outskirts of town with relaxed housing standards is a suitable way to meet the needs of people coming out of chronic homelessness. The next few years will be a test of whether these issues will be addressed or amplified as the village expands to five times its current size.
-via New York Times, January 8, 2024. Article continues below (at length!)
The community versus Community First
For Alan Graham, the expansion of Community First is just the latest stage in a long-evolving project. In the late 1990s, Mr. Graham, then a real estate developer, attended a Catholic men’s retreat that deepened his faith and inspired him to get more involved with his church. Soon after, he began delivering meals as a church volunteer to people living on Austin’s streets.
In 1998, Mr. Graham, now 67, became a founder of Mobile Loaves and Fishes, a nonprofit that has since amassed a fleet of vehicles that make daily rounds to deliver food and clothing to Austin’s homeless...
Talking to people like Mr. Johnston [a homeless Austin resident who Graham had befriended], Mr. Graham came to feel that housing alone was not enough for people who had been chronically homeless, the official term for those who have been homeless for years or repeatedly and have physical or mental disabilities, including substance-use disorders. About a third of the homeless population fits this description, and they are often estranged from family and other networks.
In 2006, Mr. Graham pitched an idea to Austin’s mayor: Create an R.V. park for people coming out of chronic homelessness. It would have about 150 homes, supportive services and easy access to public transportation. Most importantly, it would help to replace the “profound, catastrophic loss of family” he believed was at the root of the problem with a close-knit and supportive community.
The City Council voted unanimously in 2008 to lease Mr. Graham a 17-acre plot of city-owned land to make his vision a reality. Getting the council members on board, he said, turned out to be the easy part.
When residents near the intended site learned of the plan, they were outraged. They feared the development would reduce their property values and invite crime. One meeting to discuss the plan with the neighborhood grew so heated that Mr. Graham was escorted to his car by the police. Not a single one of the 52 community members in attendance voted in favor of the project.
After plans for the city-owned lot fell apart and other proposed locations faced similar resistance, Mr. Graham gave up on trying to build the development within city limits.
In 2012, he instead acquired a plot of land in a part of Travis County just northeast of Austin. It was far from public transportation and other services, but it had one big advantage: The county’s lack of zoning laws limited the power of neighbors to stop it.
Mr. Graham raised $20 million and began to build. In late 2015, Mr. Johnston left the R.V. park he had been living in and became the second person to move into the new village. It grew rapidly. In just two years, Mr. Graham bought an adjacent property, nearly doubling the village’s size to 51 acres and making room for hundreds more residents.
And then in the fall of 2022, he broke ground on the largest expansion yet: Adding two more sites to the village, expanding it by 127 acres to include nearly 2,000 homes.
“No one ever really did what they first did, and no one’s ever done what they’re about to do,” said Mark Hilbelink, the director of Sunrise Navigation Center, Austin’s largest homeless-services provider. “So there’s a little bit of excitement but also probably a little bit of trepidation about, ‘How do we do this right?’”
What it takes to make a village
Since he moved into Community First eight years ago, Mr. Johnston has found the stability that eluded him for so long. Most mornings, he wakes up early in his R.V., feeds his scruffy adopted terrier, Amos, and walks a few minutes down a quiet road to the village garden, where neat rows of carrots, leeks, beets and arugula await his attention.
Mr. Johnston worked in fast-food restaurants for most of his life, but he learned how to garden at the village. He now works full time cultivating produce for a weekly market that is free to residents.
“Once I got here, I said, This is where I’m going to spend pretty much my entire life now,” Mr. Johnston said.
Everyone at the village pays rent, which averages about $385 a month. The tiny homes that make up two-thirds of the dwellings go for slightly lower, but have no indoor plumbing; their residents use communal bathhouses and kitchens. The rest of the units are R.V.s and manufactured homes with their own bathrooms and kitchens.
Like Mr. Johnston, many residents have jobs in the village, created to offer residents flexible opportunities to earn some income. Last year, they earned a combined $1.5 million working as gardeners, landscapers, custodians, artists, jewelry makers and more, paid out by Mobile Loaves and Fishes.
Ute Dittemer, 66, faced a daily struggle for survival during a decade on the streets before moving into Community First five years ago with her husband. Now she supports herself by painting and molding figures out of clay at the village art house, augmented by her husband’s $800 monthly retirement income. A few years ago, a clay chess set she made sold for $10,000 at an auction. She used the money to buy her first car.
“I’m glad that we are not in a low-income-housing apartment complex,” she said. “We’ve got all this green out here, air to breathe.”
A small number of residents have jobs off-site, and a city bus makes hourly stops at the village 13 times a day to help people commute into town.
But about four out of five residents live on government benefits like disability or Social Security. Their incomes average $900 a month, making even tiny homes impossible to afford without help, Mr. Graham said.
“Essentially 100 percent of the people that move into this village will have to be subsidized for the rest of their lives,” he said.
For about $25,000 a year, Mr. Graham’s organization subsidizes one person’s housing at the village. (Services like primary health care and addiction counseling are provided by other organizations.) So far, that has been paid for entirely by private donations and in small part from collecting rent.
This would not be possible, Mr. Graham said, without a highly successful fund-raising operation that taps big Austin philanthropists. To build the next two expansions, Mr. Graham set a $225 million fund-raising goal, about $150 million of which has already been obtained from the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, the founder of the Patrón Spirits Company, Hill Country Bible Church and others.
Support goes beyond monetary donations. A large land grant came from the philanthropic arm of Tito’s Handmade Vodka, and Alamo Drafthouse, an Austin-based cinema chain, donated an outdoor amphitheater for movie screenings. Top architectural firms competed for the chance to design energy-efficient tiny homes free of charge. And every week, hundreds of volunteers come to help with landscaping and gardening or to serve free meals.
Around 55 residents, including 15 children, live in the village as “missionals” — unpaid neighbors generally motivated by their Christian faith to be part of the community.
All missionals undergo a monthslong “discernment process” before they can move in. They pay to live in R.V.s and manufactured homes distinguished by an “M” in the front window. Their presence in the community is meant to guard against the pitfalls of concentrated poverty and trauma.
“Missionals are our guardian angels,” said Blair Racine, a 69-year-old resident with a white beard that hangs to his chest. “They’re people we can always call. They’re always there for us.”
After moving into the village in 2018, Mr. Racine spent two years isolated in his R.V. because of a painful eye condition. But after an effective treatment, he became so social that he was nicknamed the Mayor. Missional residents drive him to get his medication once a week, he said. To their children he is Uncle Blair.
Though the village is open to people of any religious background, it is run by Christians, and public spaces are adorned with paintings of Jesus on the cross and other biblical scenes. The application to live in the community outlines a set of “core values” that refer to God and the Bible. But Mr. Graham said there is no proselytizing and people do not have to be sober or seek treatment to live there.
Mr. Graham lives in a 399-square-foot manufactured home in the middle of the village with his wife, Tricia Graham, who works as the community’s “head of neighbor care.” He said they do not have any illusions about solving the underlying mental-health and substance-use problems many residents live with, and that is not their goal.
“This is absolutely not nirvana,” Mr. Graham said. “And we want people to understand the beauty and the complexity of what we do. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else on the face of the planet than right here in the middle of this, but you’re not fixing these things.” ...
From an experiment to a model
Community First has already inspired spinoffs, with some tweaks. In 2018, Nate Schlueter, who previously worked with the village’s jobs program, opened Eden Village in his hometown, Springfield, Mo. Unlike in Community First, every home in Eden Village is identical and has its own bathroom and kitchen. Mr. Schlueter’s model has spread to 12 different cities with every village limited to 50 homes or fewer.
“Not every city is Austin, Texas,” Mr. Schlueter said. “We don’t want to build a large-scale village. And if the root cause of homelessness is a loss of family, and community is something that can duplicate that safety net to some extent, to have smaller villages to me seemed like a stronger community safety net. Everybody would know each other.”
The rapid growth of Community First has challenged that ideal. In recent years, some of the original missional residents and staff members have left, finding it harder to support the number of people moving into the village. Steven Hebbard, who lived and worked at the village since its inception, left in 2019 when he said it shifted from a “tiny-town dynamic” where he knew everyone’s name to something that felt more like a city, straining the supportive culture that helped people succeed.
Mobile Loaves and Fishes said more staff members had recently been hired to help new residents adjust, but Mr. Graham noted that there was a limit to what any housing provider could do without violating people’s privacy and autonomy.
Despite these concerns, the organization, which had been run entirely on private money, has recently drawn public support. In January 2023, Travis County gave Mobile Loaves and Fishes $35 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to build 640 units as part of its expansion.
Then four months later came a significant surprise: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development approved the use of federal housing vouchers, which subsidize part or all of a low-income resident’s rent, for the village’s tiny homes. This will make running the village much more financially sustainable, Mr. Graham said, and may make it a more replicable blueprint for other places.
“That’s a big deal for us, and it’s a big deal on a national basis,” Mr. Graham said. “It’s a recognition that this model, managed the way that this model is, has a role in the system.”
Usually, the government considers homes without indoor plumbing to be substandard, but, in this case, it made an exception by applying the housing standards it uses for single-room-occupancy units. The village still did not meet the required ratio of bathrooms per person, but at the request of Travis County and the City of Austin’s housing officials, who cited Austin’s “severe lack of affordable housing” that made it impossible for some homeless people with vouchers to find anywhere else to live, HUD waived its usual requirements.
In the waiver, a HUD staffer wrote that Mr. Graham told HUD officials over the phone that the proportion of in-unit bathrooms “has not been an issue.” But in conversations with The Times, other homeless-service providers in Austin and some village residents said the lack of in-unit bathrooms is one of the biggest problems people have with living there. It also makes the villages less accessible to people with certain disabilities and health issues that are relatively common among the chronically homeless....
Mr. Graham said that with a doctor’s note, people could secure an R.V. or manufactured home at the village, although those are in short supply and have a long waiting list. He said the village’s use of tiny homes allowed them to build at a fraction of the usual cost when few other options existed, and helps ensure residents aren’t isolated in their units, reinforcing the village’s communal ethos.
“If somebody wants to live in a tiny home they ought to have the choice,” Mr. Graham said, “and if they are poor we ought to respect their civil right to live in that place and be subsidized to live there.” But he conceded that for some people, “this might not be the model.”
“Nobody can be everything for everyone,” he said.
By the spring of 2025, Mr. Graham hopes to begin moving people into the next phase of the village, across the street from the current property. The darker visions some once predicted of an impoverished community on the outskirts of town overtaken by drugs and violence have not come to pass. Instead, the village has permanently housed hundreds of people and earned the approval and financial backing of the city, the county and the federal government. But for the model to truly meet the scale of the challenge in Austin and beyond, Chapman Semple said, the compromises that led to Community First in its current incarnation will have to be reckoned with.
“We can build smaller villages that can be fully integrated into the community, that can have access to amenities within the community that we all need to live, including jobs and groceries,” Chapman Semple said. “If it’s a wonderful model then we should be embracing and fighting for its inclusion within our community.”

warnings: missionary, pet names ( princess, doll, and beautiful), soft steve, steve cussing (language ☝️🤓)
Tumblr media
you were at a party that your friend steve rogers had invited you to. you thought it was gonna be a normal party like the ones he would also invite you to but you were surprised when you came to realize it wasn’t just a normal party, the avengers were there
“wow steve, this is some party” you said as you walked by his side, “and you live here too? with the avengers” you chuckled slightly to yourself
“yeah but it’s not really that big of a deal i guess” steve shrugged as he looked over at you. “steve you’re literally the captain america, not a big deal my ass”
he laughed as he put an arm around your shoulders as he went to introduce you to all the other members of the avengers
you talked to all of them and they were all nice and interesting people with some interesting backgrounds too. you and wanda really hit it off, you both found out you had a lot in common. “i think i just found my new best friend” you chuckled while sitting at a bar with steve. “wow so you’re just gonna ditch me like that?” he gave you a small smile while shaking his head
“that’s how i feel with you and bucky” you rolled your eyes playfully, taking a sip of her drink. “you got me there, but you know i love you both equally”
“yeah yeah, whatever you say” you playfully rolled your eyes at him again
after the party everyone went back to their rooms or went about their business. you just finished helping steve clean up as you said to him, “wow, it’s really dark outside”
“yeah, are you sure you want me to drop you home still or you can stay here for the night?” steve looked over at you, leaning against a counter top.
“i mean yes, i don’t really want to be a burden” you laughed slightly. “you won’t be and i don’t want you being alone this late at night”
“im always alone at night, there’s no difference” you shrugged, giving him a small smile. “still” steve simply said
you sighed as you shook your head, “fine, okay ill stay” you said in defeat, “but where am i gonna stay?”
“well you could stay in the many guest rooms that tony has..” steve said as he begin walking into the hallway as you followed him. “..or you could stay in my room” steve stopped in his tracks as he turned to you, towering over you as you looked up at him
“o-oh, well i don’t wanna take up your space and stuff” your face began to heat up as you looked away nervously. “relax y/n, you know you won’t bother me” steve said as he rubbed your shoulder gently, “well if you say so then” you laughed nervously as you followed him back to his room
for some reason you felt a feeling that you thought you would never feel about steve, you felt.. nervous. you felt nervous to be around him right now but also with a hint of excitement of what the night holds
“do you want to change into something more comfortable?” steve asked after you both arrived to his room, which was basically like a studio apartment. it had a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom and bedroom, everything a studio could have
“yeah sure, this dress is starting to feel uncomfortable too” you laughed slightly as steve looked you over. he felt a weird feeling in his stomach as he took in your appearance, you look so beautiful right now, the way your dress hugged your body, your eyes, your everything. you just looked so phenomenal, the lighting hitting your face so perfectly, illuminating all your features
steve went into his room as you followed, as you both entered his room you looked around, taking in your surroundings. “wow it’s surprisingly clean in here” you chuckled to yourself as steve gave you a playful eye roll. “what” you shrugged, “back then you were very messy so i expected it”
steve handed you one of his shirt and a pair of one of his sweatpants. “these might be a little big on you but you can tie it”
you thanked him as you set the clothes on the bed. “i’ll leave the room so you can change” steve smiled as he turned away, “if you need help with anything, im on the other side of the door”
“wait, i kinda need help with my dress” you laughed awkwardly, “sorry, but i can’t reach the zipper”
“it’s not problem” steve said as he made his way over to you. he stood behind you as his hands went to the back of your dress, running his hands over the zipper
with a gentle, and painfully slow motion, he began to pull the zipper down. the sound was surprisingly loud in the quiet room, a soft, intimate rasp that seemed to echo
inch by inch, the fabric parted, revealing the smooth melanin and delicate skin of your back. Steve’s hands were steady but inside, a storm of emotions exploded
you tilted your head slightly, your hair moving to one side swiftly, exposing the nape of your neck. steve’s fingers lingered, his pulse quickening as he reached the small of your back. the air between the both of you was thick with unspoken words, with possibilities that neither dared to voice
finally, the zipper reached its end, and the dress loosened around you. you turned slowly, your eyes meeting his. there was a vulnerability in your gaze, a silent question hanging between the two of you. the distance was unbearable, yet neither of you moved, caught in the tension of the moment
“thank you” you murmured, your voice trembling just a bit. steve nodded, his throat tight, unable to trust his voice
you both stood there, in silence, the world outside the door forgotten.
you thought the silence was going to to continue as the night drifted away but your thoughts were cut short as a pair of lips captured yours in a deep but passionate kiss
the kiss speaking louder than the silence and the words that were caught in their throats.
steve pulls out of the kiss as he looks into your eyes. your eyes stare back up at him as he says “i’m sorry, i don’t know why i did tha-“, steve’s words were caught short as you kissed him this time
the kiss was the only answer steve needed as he kissed you back, moving his hands up to cup your cheeks.
you reach up to wrap your hands around his neck, your dress falling down from your body. steve’s hands move down to your thighs as he picks you up,your legs wrapping around his waist as he walks over to his bed, still kiss you
he laid you on the bed and stood back up and began to take his clothes off. as you watched him, you felt as if everything was moving in slow motion. the swift but slow movements of steve made you feel things in your stomach and her pussy
after getting rid of his clothes, he pulled down his boxers as his dick bounced back against his stomach. your mouth went dry as you looked at the size of him, it was like god sculpted steve himself, his muscles, his abs, the veins on his hands and his dick, everything about him was heavenly and beautiful, he was like a greek god
“i see you’re enjoying the view” steve smirks at you as he climbed back on top of you, his muscles flexing. “shut up” you give him a playful eye roll as he captured your lips in another kiss, biting your bottom lips softly, asking for entrance into your mouth
you let him in as his tongue explored your mouth, from top to bottom. he reached behind you with one hand and unclasped your bra, throwing it somewhere around the room
he starts kissing down your neck, to your chest and down to your stomach as his fingers played with the hem of your panties. “steve~” you whimpered his name as you bit your bottom lips. “it’s okay beautiful, i’m gonna make you feel good”
he slid your panties off and threw them to the side, grabbing his dick as his thumb rubbed around the tip, spreading the precum around the head of his cock
you grew more wet every second, watching his movements and how he’s slowly teasing her, it was turning you on more
steve slowly and steadily swiped the tip of his cock through your folds, earning a low gasp from you. he smirked to himself as he tapped the tip on your clit, earning another gasp from you. “already so sensitive hmm beautiful?”
“don’t worry princess i won’t keep you waiting any longer” steve said and then hes slowly pushing himself into you
“s-steve” you moaned as his length filled you up, already hitting your g-spot. he grabbed your thighs as he positioned himself better and slowly moving inside you
he moaned as he felt your walls clenched around him, as if choking him. he wanted to cum already, your pussy felt so good and warm.
“s-shit y/n” he moaned your name as his pace begin to speed up, your body starting to heat up more.
your legs are wrapped around his waist tightly, your arms wrapped around his neck and his back as you claws at his back, leaving marks all over it. marks he would look at later on and admire
“it’s so deep steve~” you moaned against his ear as beads of sweat dripped down the side of your forehead. “i know princess, i got you, gonna make you feel so good” steve moaned into your ear as his pace was fast and rough but not too rough to hurt her
“taking me so well doll, fuck~”
his thrusts got sloppy as your fingers gripped onto his hair and your fingers claw and scratched his back, the muscles flexing under your fingertips
“i-i’m gonna cum steve~” you whimpered into his ear as you felt the heat building up in her lower stomach. “me too princess, me too”
few strokes later you felt yourself clenching around his dick as you released all over his dick, moaning and crying out his name.
steve came a few seconds after you, moaning your name, mixed with curses as he fucked his cum into you, filling you full
you both breathe in sync while staring into each others eyes. steve leans down as he kisses you and nibbles at your bottom lip, smiling into the kiss
there was a knock at the door as you guys heard tony on the other side of it saying “keep it down please, some of us are actually trying to sleep”

🏠weekly.:.tag.:.wednesday🏠
hey @jrooc @energievie @catgrassplantdad @mmmichyyy @stocious @gallawitchxx
This is crazy, I feel like I’m in the twilight zone. I’m currently in a race to move out of my apartment and my city by next Sunday and running my Facebook marketplace profile with an iron fist like it's a full time job so I’m kind of a moving expert atm. On that note—take some of my art!
Name: Gigi
Age: 25
Have you moved a lot in your life? Yeah we moved houses quite a bit my parents were allergic to stability I'm fine about it
How many homes have you had (places you've lived in): 12?
What’s your favourite place in your house/flat/condo/cave etc?  My current apartment is basically one room so the whole thing I guess? It’s really been perfect for this period of my life and I’m going to miss it :( and its rent controlled :'(
Do you live in a house/condo/cave? I live in what most of the country would classify dimensionally as a tiny home, but here in New York we call a very reasonably sized shoe box studio
What are the key colours in your room? I have a lot of pale warm blue and walnut in my room. Blue generally doesn’t even rank on my fave colors list but it has such a calming effect that I usually subtly use a lot of it in my living space.
Favourite thing in your room? Probably all my books, I also love my bed frame it’s the one piece of furniture that I’m keeping.
What is your dream house? Beach house? Castle on a hill? Mansion? Little bungalow? Cottage on a lake?  A stunningly beautiful Brooklyn brownstone that is magically both charmingly old and has zero structural/plumbing/mechanical issues. Also a house in rural Haiku, Maui. One of those two very similar options lol.
What’s your interior design style? Usonian and scandi and some of my own designs thrown all over the walls
Are you a minimalist or maximalist? I’m a minimalist for sure, stuff is a burden—remember that if you are not currently moving.
Do you like lots of colour in your space or do you like white and nudes?  I like a balance. I have a ton of super colorful paintings and crazy clippings on my walls so I keep everything else very minimal and neutral.
Tchotchkes or clean shelves? Tchotchkes are kind of the bane of my existence I don’t think I own any. Most of my “stuff” are all art supplies, books and clothes which are currently giving me a headache.
Are you good at throwing things out or do you think every lamp has feelings?  I'm great at selling or giving away stuff. I get really caught up in not wasting or throwing things out or feeling guilty if I do. Luckily in New york you can just leave stuff out on the stoop and someone will take it
Do you have roommates (parents or spouse count) or live alone? Just me!
Do you prefer to live alone or with people? I much prefer to live alone but I think that’s pretty dependent on living in a very dense city where you never really feel alone. I always hear people around but if it was just me in the woods that might be spooky city population me.

Vampire Haven: Addison's Edition
inspired by this post from the lovely @gorbalsvampire and a healthy amount of brainrot for specifically my Vampire: the Requiem Nosferatu Addison, I am here to do a presentation into her living space and all its problems <3 If you want to do this, see this as your invite <3 Tag me in your posts, let me look at where your vampires live!! If this is fun I might do this for my other kids also <3
Tumblr media
art made by the inimitable @crownedinmarigolds (yes a piece of this shall be on everything all of the time if it's about addie now xoxo <3)
Location
Addie lives on 52nd street, between 6th and 7th avenue in Brooklyn, New York. Half a mile away from Sunset Park. She lives in Brooklyn because Brooklyn was more affordable than Manhattan, while being a simple commute into the heart of the city that never sleeps.
Haven Type
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her haven is a weak excuse for a studio apartment. The building was renovated a while ago, with one normal sized apartment being turned into three... boxes. That would be the best way to describe it. A living room with kitchenette, with window facing outside!, a bathroom that barely fits a shower, sink and toilet, and a bed in a room, but it's more a closet than anything else. Addie was never meant to spend prolonged periods in her haven though, with the vast majority of her life lived across the bridge in Manhattan, so it works for her. Worked for her. The legality of the 'apartment' is questionable, but we're ignoring that <3
Protection
The apartment is not the best place to live, protection wise. She takes care herself to not let kindred know where she lives, although that is more a shame thing than an attempt at protecting herself. The safest place without sunlight in the space is what was once a closet, where she's gathered a pile of blankets to lie on when day breaks. There have been multiple evenings where she's woken up to a fallen tower of shoes over her, but that's better than being roasted by sunlight!
Decoration
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Remember when I said Addison's apartment is filled with problems? This is where it shows. Because she was never meant to spend prolonged periods of time in her apartment, it's started to look a bit like a hoarder home. Pretty much every surface is covered with scripts, markers, playbills, notes, papers for note taking, or books. The few areas that are still "clear" include one specific corner of a 'dining table' (it's more a small desk with two chairs, but ssh) and the only reason it's no longer covered in paper is because she's crumpled most of the papers up and chucked them at her sire out of anger in her early requiem. The only actual locations that are free from the paper curse, are a small cupboard in which she's kept minuscule keepsakes. A set piece from Dear Evan Hansen, an outfit she was meant to wash and return before the Phantom of the Opera performance she never showed up to. Small trinkets she's gotten from fellow cast, crew, and her girlfriend. It's closed and there's no glass to look through. Addison knows it's there, and that's good enough for her. The bed'room' is unused, has been unused since her embrace. The bed's nothing but a mattress anymore, stripped bare of blankets and such, and functioning as yet another surface for papers (albeit a bit more important ones.) The decor of her space is basically just a constant reminder of everything she's lost with her embrace. Not on purpose, but it turned out that way. She can't find the time or energy to Marie Kondo the papers into the trash, so she pretends to not see them. As for further decor: most her furniture is second hand, a big part lifted straight from the New York City sidewalk. A ragtag chaos that for many people would serve a desperate nightmare. But it's hers. For now. For however long that's going to last.

I’m thinking about starting to write a wind breaker OC. I don’t know who I’m pairing him with yet but it’s going to be between Sakura, Kaji, or maybe someone else. Feedback would be appreciated!
“You demon. If it wasn’t for you your father would still be with me.” A women’s voice hissed out as she looked at the child in front of her. A child with midnight blue hair with two mismatched eyes stared up at her. Those damned eyes that held no light in them, only indifference as he stared at her. Her lips curled in a snarl before she pulled out a gun. “It’s all your fault.”
BANG
A vibration could be felt on the teenager’s pillow as his mismatched eyes opened slowly. ‘That dream again. He thinks before his face turns towards his phone upon feeling yet another vibration. He lets out a sigh as he reaches for it to see who was messaging him.
🎧: Wake your ass up and get ready for school.
🎧: And you better not smell like smoke.
He grumbles as he reads the texts before reaching for his hearing aid for his left ear and slipping it on. The world gets loud once again while he rolls out of bed to get ready for his first day at Furin High. He reaches for the smokes laying on his desk and opens up his window before taking one out and lighting it. He inhales the first hit of nicotine, holds it in and lets it out slowly. Upon hearing a noise below him he looks down and watches a kid around his age with two different hair colors walk down the street.
‘Huh.’ That’s not something you see everyday and he though his hair color was weird. He himself had natural midnight blue hair he got from his father. His mismatched eyes were a mix between his father’s and his mother’s. His left eye being grey and his right one being blue.
He feels and hears his phone go off with another message causing him he groan and flick the rest of his cigarette out the window. The bastard wouldn’t stop texting him until he answers him.
🎧: I can see you read my messages. Answer me you little shit.
💩: I’m up. Leave me alone to get ready.
🎧: Good. I’ll be there in twenty.
He throws his phone on his bed with an amused huff before throwing his clothes on. He wears the black uniform pants with a black slip on hoodie and his uniform jacket on top of it. He picks up his blue tinted sunglasses and slips them on over his eyes. He doesn’t know why he still chooses to wear them even though he and the person who gave them to him no longer speak to one another, not by his choice mind you. Maybe he has a problem with letting go of the past.
He pulls the hood of his hoodie up half way as he makes his way out of his room/living space. His apartment is basically a studio with a bathroom off to the side and a small kitchen. It was cheap for rent so he wasn’t complaining. He brushes his teeth in his bathroom to try and get rid of the smoke smell on his breath, he knows it will not work but he’s going to try anyways. Spitting in the sink he takes a moment to look at himself in the mirror, the four claw marks over his blue eye standing out on his skin. He looks most like his father which he’s grateful for.
He puts his deodorant on and sprays a cologne before he heads out towards his door to slip on his shoes. He’s slipping them on when he hears a banging on his door signaling the arrival of his friend.
“Kirishima! You better hurry the hell up!” He hears the voice of his long term friend, Kaji Ren And it causes him to laugh lightly. He was loud so Kirishima took that as a sign that he had his headphone shoved over his ears.
“I’m coming!” Even knowing he probably won’t hear it he couldn’t help but call back to him. He gives a lazy smile as he opens the door to meet a pair of blue eyes staring into his own. “Damn you’re loud so early in the morning.” He laughs at the narrow eyes he gets in return for his statement.

OKAY!!! SO!!! All the members on the Qsmp go to Quesadilla University who’s mascot is a silly yellow duck and a white bear affectionately (?) named Cucurucho
The Brazilian members are international students who come one semester to study there!! (Bagi comes a few semesters after the og five do because Forever and Cellbit kept talking to her about the school. Maybe her application was delayed to join) They all stay in the same dorm together because if they weren’t allowed too I think they’d set the University on fire (all six still have very…questionable pasts but they don’t talk about it lol)
Quackity introduced all the Brazilians to the English + Spanish players because they’re all in a program to help the new international students get use to being at the university/help them in any way they need.
Cellbit is a law student with a concentration in criminal law I think!! Same with Bagi I think she would be a law student (if you have more creative ideas tho feel free to let me know)
Felps is an art student, I think he’d do a lot of sculpting and has carved a massive fucking slab of marble into a perfect square by hand (hes fucking insane <33)
Tazercraft are both Science/Stem majors I think? Pac might have a focus on like chemical science though and Mike is more engineering????
Forever is a carpentry major (BUILDER!!) and minoring in Business (STONKSCRAFT!!) he’s super popular on campus btw… it’s because he’s so pretty and friendly with people like… look at him… you can’t not love him…
Cellbit runs the TTRPG/DND club on campus (their club room is right next to the Pride Center. this was not a mistake they specifically asked for that room) and the vice president is Slimecicle!! It’s a super fun and welcoming place, both of them love to scare the shit out of the new players with the role playing horrors <33 During Pride Month, Cellbit is exclusively referred too as the “Gay Master” and wears a mlm cape with a lil ace flag in it too :DD
Anyways, I mentioned they all dorm together!! Basically it has like one communal space and three smaller rooms/bedrooms (2 beds in each, last room has one bed). The communal space has a couch which can be turned into a bed and they all like to watch movies there together and destress :DD
One of the bedrooms was turned into a study room basically and Cellbit pretty much lives in there MABDHJFBAKAK he’s always studying or doing something on his laptop and the others check up on him sometimes. There have been multiple occasions where Forever was studying in there at like…4 am and Cellbit just walks in, climbs into Forever’s lap and just passes out. He’s like a cat he sleeps wherever he wants and we can’t do anything about it ://
Also if no one asks where Felps is he will just pass out in his studio inhaling clay fumes or whatever project he’s working on. He will simply vanish off the face of the planet (this is why the Brazilians all have a “family” group chat, yes Bagi got added to it even before she came to Quesadilla University)

The Slow Living Vibe: Why Indian Homes Are Falling in Love With Handmade Furniture
Tumblr media
There’s a quiet shift happening in Indian homes—one that’s ditching mass production and embracing intentional living.
You’ve probably seen it on your feed: that dreamy, sun-drenched corner with an arched wooden bookshelf, or a dining table that looks like it has stories to tell. It’s not from a mall store. It’s custom. It’s local. It’s handmade furniture in India.
And it’s not just about aesthetics. It’s about soul. It’s about slowing down.
🌿 The Rise of Slow, Sustainable Design
In a world that’s rushing, more and more Indians—especially city dwellers, creatives, and returning NRIs—are craving furniture that feels like home.
Not just another piece from a catalogue. But something…
Made with actual hands, not machines
Designed to fit your life and not the other way around
Rooted in Indian craftsmanship and global taste
That’s where bespoke furniture in India comes in. It’s thoughtful. It’s timeless. It’s yours.
📌 Real Talk: Why Factory Furniture Isn’t It Anymore
Sure, IKEA’s great for temporary setups. But here’s why it’s losing out in the Indian luxury and design scene:
Flat packs don’t feel emotional.
Particle board doesn’t age well.
There’s zero heritage in mass-made furniture.
Meanwhile, brands like West India International are redefining what high end furniture in India means—think artisanal woodwork, regal silhouettes, and you-level customization.
💫 What Even Is “Bespoke” Furniture?
Let’s demystify it. Bespoke furniture = made-to-measure furniture. Think couture but for your living room. 🛋️
It’s furniture that understands:
The odd nook in your studio apartment
Your obsession with brass + walnut wood
Your love for modern minimalism with a Rajasthani soul
Basically, it's a vibe. And it’s the opposite of disposable.
🔥 Trending: The Comeback of Craftsmanship
Scroll through any Indian decor inspo tag and you’ll see it: curved edges, antique carvings, intricate inlays, handmade textures.
It’s giving: legacy. It’s giving: modern maharaja. It’s giving: high end handmade furniture in India.
And West India International is leading this renaissance with handcrafted, luxury furniture that blends Indian traditions with fresh, global styles.
🛕✨ Imagine: A dining table carved by a 4th-gen artisan in Udaipur. A bed frame that feels like art. A study desk that inspires you to write that book.
🎯 The New Indian Aesthetic: You, Curated
Whether you’re a solo creative setting up a studio flat or a family revamping your ancestral home, bespoke furniture in India lets you co-create your space.
Design it. Sketch it. Mood-board it. Then let seasoned Indian artisans bring it to life—with handpicked wood, one-on-one consultations, and details that feel personal.
It’s intimate. It’s empowering. It’s sustainable.
💖 Why We’re Obsessed with West India International
Not to romanticize, but this brand gets it.
They make high end handmade furniture in India that’s:
✔️ Crafted by local artisans ✔️ Built from solid Indian woods like teak and sheesham ✔️ Designed with intention, not algorithms ✔️ Actually made to last decades
Their pieces aren’t just furniture—they’re stories waiting to unfold in your home.
✨ Before You Buy: 5 Bespoke Tips for the Dreamy Indian Home
Know your wood—teak = timeless, mango = mood, rosewood = regal
Think storage-smart (Indian homes need it!)
Always measure twice 😅
Pick a theme: rustic, coastal, heritage, Japandi
Support brands that are rooted in Indian craftsmanship
📍Why Bespoke Furniture in India is the New Luxury
🌈 Final Word: Curate Your Soul Space
In India, a home is more than just walls—it’s family, memory, identity. That’s why bespoke furniture matters.
It’s not just something you buy. It’s something you live with. Grow with. Pass on.
And with brands like West India International, your home can finally reflect you—not a showroom model.
So here’s to homes with heart. And furniture that feels like poetry.

Luxury Handmade Furniture in India: Heritage in Every Piece
In today’s era of mass production and flat-packed furnishings, there’s something profoundly meaningful about choosing furniture that carries a legacy — furniture that tells a story. That’s exactly what you get with Luxury Handmade Furniture in India. It’s not just decor; it’s a preservation of heritage, a celebration of craftsmanship, and a design choice that elevates your living spaces with timeless elegance.
Handmade furniture in India has always been more than utility. From the palatial courts of the Mughals to the artisan homes of Rajasthan, these creations have stood the test of time, blending history, culture, and artisanal mastery. Today, modern luxury homeowners are turning to this legacy, not just for the beauty it brings, but for the depth it adds to their homes.
A Tradition Passed Down Generations
India’s history with handcrafted furniture spans centuries. Skilled artisans in cities like Jodhpur, Saharanpur, and Mysore have been hand-carving, shaping, and assembling intricate pieces long before modern machinery existed. Their tools may be basic — chisels, hammers, and sandpaper — but their talent is anything but ordinary.
Each piece of Luxury Handmade Furniture in India is a continuation of these age-old traditions. Whether it’s a solid wood dining table with floral carvings or a teakwood cabinet with brass inlays, the detailing represents a lineage of design passed from generation to generation.
Why Heritage Matters in Interior Design
When you incorporate heritage into your home decor, you're doing more than creating a visual aesthetic. You're creating a space that has:
Character: Every handmade piece has imperfections that make it real and one-of-a-kind.
Cultural Value: Many designs carry motifs inspired by local folklore, Mughal architecture, or tribal traditions.
Longevity: Unlike factory furniture, heritage pieces are built to last — often lasting decades or even lifetimes.
In a fast-moving, digital world, these pieces root your space in something tangible and enduring.
Defining Luxury in Handmade Indian Furniture
So, what makes this style "luxury"? It’s not just the materials or the price — it’s the level of attention, artistry, and emotional value infused into every item. Here’s what luxury really means in this context:
✔ Premium Hardwoods
Luxury furniture typically uses high-quality, slow-growing hardwoods like teak, sheesham (Indian rosewood), mango wood, or acacia. These woods not only ensure strength and longevity but also develop a rich patina over time.
✔ Detailed Craftsmanship
From intricate carvings and delicate inlay work to hand-joined joints and smooth, hand-polished finishes, luxury handmade furniture pays attention to even the tiniest details.
✔ Bespoke Customization
Unlike mass-market options, many handmade furniture studios offer customization — choose your dimensions, designs, finishes, and carvings.
✔ Aesthetic Versatility
Although steeped in tradition, luxury handmade furniture from India blends seamlessly into modern, minimalist, bohemian, or eclectic homes — making it both adaptable and timeless.
The Story in the Wood
Each piece of handmade furniture has a story:
A coffee table carved from reclaimed temple wood
A rosewood swing (jhoola) passed through a Rajasthani artisan family
A wardrobe with lattice doors inspired by Mughal jaali patterns
This storytelling aspect is part of what makes Luxury Handmade Furniture in India so captivating. It’s furniture that doesn't just fill space — it adds soul to your space.
Where to Use Handmade Furniture in Your Home
✦ Living Room
A hand-carved wooden sofa set or an ornate center table instantly gives the room a sense of grandeur. Accent chairs with traditional carvings make perfect conversation starters.
✦ Bedroom
Opt for a vintage four-poster bed, a solid wood dresser with mirror frames, or a carved nightstand. These elements turn your bedroom into a personal retreat filled with warmth and elegance.
✦ Dining Area
A handcrafted dining table becomes the heart of family meals and festive gatherings. Pair it with custom chairs or benches upholstered in traditional Indian fabrics for added charm.
✦ Hallway or Entry
First impressions matter. A carved console table, wooden shoe rack with ethnic flair, or a jharokha-style mirror instantly adds regal charm to your entrance.
How Handmade Furniture Elevates Interior Design
Interior designers love using handmade furniture for several reasons:
It brings uniqueness: No two pieces are exactly alike.
It complements all styles: Be it colonial, rustic, or contemporary.
It offers visual depth: Hand-carved details and natural textures create visual richness.
It builds layered storytelling: Clients want homes that reflect who they are, and heritage pieces help tell that story.
Caring for Your Heritage Pieces
While handmade wooden furniture is durable, proper care ensures it lasts generations:
Use a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth for dusting.
Avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading.
Use coasters or mats under hot or wet items.
Apply natural wood polish every few months to maintain its sheen.
When taken care of properly, handmade furniture becomes an heirloom that can be passed down, just like the tradition that created it.
Where to Buy Luxury Handmade Furniture in India
Several trusted platforms and local brands specialize in handmade Indian furniture. Look for:
Direct-from-artisan sellers in Jodhpur, Jaipur, or Mysore.
Online curated collections with background stories.
Brands that allow customization and share details about wood sourcing and craftsmanship.
Ensure you’re getting ethically made, sustainably sourced, and artisan-empowering products when buying online.
Final Thoughts: Choose Heritage, Choose Heart
Incorporating Luxury Handmade Furniture in India into your home is more than a decor decision — it’s an investment in culture, sustainability, and enduring beauty.
Every joint, every polish stroke, every carving tells a story rooted in India’s rich artistic heritage. It’s furniture with a soul — a piece of the past, made for your future.
So, the next time you furnish your space, choose not just what’s trendy. Choose what’s timeless. Choose what’s meaningful. Choose heritage.

Looking for a floor piece that blends cozy charm with thoughtful design? Let’s talk about Hand Tufted Area Rugs—crafted not just for comfort but with a story stitched into every inch. These rugs carry the essence of artistry and add subtle character to wherever you lay them. At GetMyRugs, the tradition of rug-making is more than just a process—it’s a legacy built over four decades.
Tumblr media
The Art Behind Hand Tufted Area Rugs
What sets hand tufted area rugs apart is the method used to create them. Unlike hand-knotted rugs, which require months of intricate weaving, hand tufted rugs are made using a tufting tool that allows skilled artisans to punch yarn into a stretched fabric canvas. The result? A thick, plush, and durable rug that feels soft underfoot and still showcases detailed design work.
Each rug is finished with a latex backing that locks the design in place, adding to the overall durability. That’s what makes these rugs a popular pick for high-traffic areas—they look rich and handle wear gracefully.
Why Hand Tufted Rugs Are a Great Choice
There’s a reason why people gravitate toward hand tufted area rugs. Whether you're decorating a studio apartment or refreshing a living room, these rugs provide:
Texture: The dense pile offers a cushiony feel, perfect for lounging.
Variety: From modern geometrics to subtle florals, there’s a style for every taste.
Affordability: While they offer a luxurious feel, they’re often more budget-friendly than other handmade options.
Low Shedding: With quality materials and finishing, many hand tufted rugs from GetMyRugs shed far less than others in the same category.
It’s this combination of beauty, comfort, and smart value that makes them ideal for homes seeking something beyond basic floor coverings.
GetMyRugs – A Legacy in Every Thread
At GetMyRugs, hand tufted rugs are not just another product—they are the result of time-honored techniques and a deep understanding of design trends. The brand works with skilled weavers who use premium-grade wool, cotton, and viscose to produce rugs that are soft yet long-lasting.
What truly sets the brand apart is the attention to color blends, textures, and unique patterns. Whether you're into classic motifs or leaning into bold, artistic designs, the collection has something that speaks to your vibe. And since the company manages its own production, you’re getting direct-from-source quality with a personal touch.
Where Can You Use Hand Tufted Area Rugs?
Their versatility is one of their biggest strengths. These rugs work well in:
Living rooms – As a soft anchor for your seating area.
Bedrooms – Under beds or as bedside rugs for cozy comfort.
Dining areas – To define a space and soften sound.
Home offices – Adding warmth without overwhelming the space.
The possibilities are endless, especially when you have access to curated selections like those offered at GetMyRugs.
Care Tips for Long-Lasting Beauty
Hand tufted rugs are relatively easy to maintain. Just vacuum them regularly to keep dirt from settling in. Avoid using beater bars that might stress the fibers. And if there’s a spill? Blot gently—don’t rub—and get it spot cleaned as soon as you can. Rotate the rug every few months to ensure even wear and exposure to light.
Final Thought
With hand tufted area rugs, you’re not just getting a decor item—you’re investing in warmth, design, and skilled artistry. If you're someone who values pieces with purpose, these rugs deliver on all fronts. And with GetMyRugs, you’re backed by 40+ years of craftsmanship, genuine materials, and a passion for creating rugs that bring life to your floors.

Whether you live in a small apartment, frequently host guests, or simply want to maximize your living space, a well-chosen folding sofa bed can transform your home. This comprehensive guide explores everything you need to know about selecting, using, and maintaining these versatile pieces.
What Is a Folding Sofa Bed?
A folding sofa bed is a dual-purpose furniture item that serves as both a comfortable seating solution during the day and a convenient sleeping surface at night. Unlike traditional sofa beds that require removing cushions or pulling out a mattress, most modern folding sofa beds feature a simple folding mechanism that converts from sofa to bed in seconds.
Key Features of Modern Folding Sofa Beds
Space-saving design: Ideal for small apartments and studios
Quick conversion: Most models transform in under 30 seconds
Variety of sizes: From compact singles to spacious queen sizes
Multiple style options: Contemporary, traditional, and modular designs
Built-in storage: Some models include drawers or compartments
Benefits of Owning a Folding Sofa Bed
1. Maximizes Limited Space
The primary advantage of a folding sofa bed is its ability to serve two functions in one footprint. This makes it perfect for:
Studio apartments
Home offices that double as guest rooms
Small living rooms that need occasional extra sleeping space
2. Cost-Effective Solution
Instead of purchasing separate pieces for seating and sleeping, a folding sofa bed provides both at a fraction of the cost. Quality models range from 300−
300−1,500, compared to buying a sofa and bed separately which could cost $2,000 or more.
3. Comfort for Overnight Guests
Modern folding sofa beds have come a long way from the uncomfortable pull-out couches of the past. Many now feature:
Memory foam or high-density foam mattresses
Pocket coil spring systems
Adjustable backrests for customized comfort
4. Style Versatility
Today's folding sofa beds are designed to look like regular sofas, with stylish upholstery options including:
Luxe velvet
Durable performance fabrics
Classic leather
Trendy linen blends
Types of Folding Sofa Beds
1. Click-Clack Mechanism
The simplest and most affordable option, these fold flat to create a sleeping surface. Best for occasional use.
2. Pull-Out Futons
Feature a thicker mattress that folds down from the back. Offer better sleeping comfort than traditional futons.
3. Convertible Sectionals
Larger units where one or more sections fold out to create a bed. Ideal for family rooms.
4. High-End Sofa Beds
Premium models with innerspring or memory foam mattresses that rival regular beds in comfort.
How to Choose the Right Folding Sofa Bed
1. Consider Your Space
Measure your room carefully
Allow at least 3 feet of clearance for folding mechanisms
Consider traffic flow when the bed is extended
2. Determine Usage Frequency
Occasional guests: Basic futon or click-clack style
Frequent use: Invest in a higher-end model with better mattress
Daily use: Look for commercial-grade mechanisms
3. Mattress Quality Matters
Memory foam: Best comfort but higher price
Innerspring: Traditional feel with good support
High-density foam: Budget-friendly and durable
4. Test the Mechanism
Before purchasing:
Try converting it several times
Check for smooth operation
Ensure it locks securely in both positions
5. Style Considerations
Choose a design that complements your existing decor:
Mid-century modern legs
Traditional rolled arms
Contemporary clean lines
Top Uses for Folding Sofa Beds

The ultimate space-saver that eliminates the need for a separate bed.

3. Home Offices
Creates a dual-purpose room that can accommodate occasional guests.
4. Vacation Homes
Ideal for properties that need flexible sleeping arrangements.
5. Children's Rooms

Maintenance and Care Tips
1. Regular Cleaning
Vacuum upholstery weekly

Avoid forcing the folding action
3. Mattress Care

Use a mattress protector
Air out periodically
4. Longevity Tips

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Choosing Style Over Function - A beautiful sofa that's uncomfortable to sleep on defeats the purpose.
Ignoring Weight Limits - Some models aren't designed for daily use as a bed.
Poor Placement - Not leaving enough room for the folding mechanism to operate.
Skimping on Quality - Cheap mechanisms break quickly with regular use.
Forgetting About Sheets - Have appropriately sized bedding ready for when guests arrive.

Types of Hotel Rooms: How to Classify, Manage, and Market Your Inventory Effectively
Tumblr media
Introduction
The hospitality industry thrives on personalization—and one of the most important ways to meet guest needs is through well-defined room offerings. Understanding the different types of hotel rooms helps hotels deliver tailored experiences, set clear guest expectations, and maintain pricing integrity.
Today’s travelers expect clarity and value when booking. Whether they’re traveling solo for business or with family on vacation, room classification affects their decision-making. For hoteliers, room categorization is critical not only for guest satisfaction but also for operational efficiency. Supported by the right hotel management software, accurate room type setup can streamline inventory control, rate management, and multi-channel distribution.
Why Room Classification Is Essential
Every hotel has a unique inventory layout—rooms vary in size, view, amenities, and even purpose. Creating a structure for room types helps you:
Offer tiered pricing and upsell opportunities
Market rooms more effectively across OTAs and your own website
Avoid overbooking and misallocation
Deliver personalized service based on room type and guest profile
Room classification is not just for back-office organization—it plays a key role in guest-facing marketing, booking conversions, and brand positioning.
Types of Hotel Rooms: A Complete Breakdown
Let’s look at the most common room types found across hotels, along with some specialized variations:
1. Single Room
Designed for one person, this room typically features a single bed, basic furnishings, and a private bathroom. Ideal for short business stays or budget travelers.
2. Double Room
Fitted with either one double bed or two twin beds, double rooms cater to couples or friends traveling together. Hotels often offer flexible configurations (e.g., king/double-double) to maximize occupancy.
3. Queen and King Rooms
Queen rooms come with a queen-size bed—spacious but economical. King rooms, on the other hand, offer additional luxury with a king-sized bed and sometimes extra space for a desk or lounge chair. Both are common in mid-scale and upscale hotels.
4. Twin Room
Features two separate single beds. Great for siblings, business colleagues, or group travelers who prefer individual sleeping arrangements.
5. Studio Room
A hybrid between a hotel room and a small apartment, studios typically feature a bedroom, living space, and a kitchenette. Perfect for extended-stay guests or corporate clients.
6. Suite
A suite usually includes separate rooms—a bedroom and a living area—and enhanced amenities like a minibar, workspace, or upgraded bathroom. Some suites also offer balconies or in-room dining spaces, catering to luxury or long-stay guests.

Managing Room Types Efficiently with Hotel Management Software
Having defined room types is one thing—but managing them across bookings, rates, and platforms requires precision. This is where a modern hotel management software system becomes indispensable. With it, hoteliers can:
Set dynamic rates for each room type based on demand, season, and occupancy
Update room descriptions and images across OTAs instantly
Prevent overbooking or duplicate assignments
Track performance per room category (ADR, occupancy, revenue)
Coordinate with housekeeping and maintenance for room readiness
Room types are integrated into your reservation system, revenue strategy, and guest communications—making centralized management critical.
Conclusion
Knowing the different types of hotel rooms and managing them with precision is foundational to delivering excellent guest experiences and maximizing profit. From basic singles to elaborate suites, each room category should serve a specific audience and align with your hotel’s overall service strategy.
And with the support of robust hotel management software, hoteliers can ensure every room is booked, priced, and presented to its full potential—no matter how many channels or guests they serve.
