L'ÉcoRandonnée 2024 au Québec

Je fais un petit arrêt spécial cette semaine. En effet, au lieu d’attaquer ce blogue avec mes impressions et commentaires concernant un véhicule en particulier, je vous présente plusieurs véhicules que j’ai pu conduire ou essayer lors du récent déroulement de l’ÉcoRandonnée, cet évènement annuel de l’Association des Journalistes Automobile du Canada (AJAC) qui met en vedette un imposant groupe de véhicules électriques ou « électrifiés » confiés à une vingtaine de journalistes automobile canadiens pas nécessairement pour les tester mais surtout pour les évaluer face à leurs concurrents. En même temps, nous participions à une petite compétition amicale pour décider lequel de ces journalistes serait le meilleur conducteur de véhicule du genre par la compilation de ses résultats de consommation.

Cette année, les dirigeants de l’AJAC ont choisi la rive sud de Montréal comme endroit de prédilection au Canada pour conduire ces véhicules. Pour ce faire, six grandes marques d’automobile ont accepté de participer à cet évènement, les Sud-coréens Genesis et Hyundai, les Japonais Mazda, Nissan et Toyota-Lexus et l’Américain Lucid. Malheureusement, malgré qu’ils fussent des participants des premières épreuves de l’ÉcoRandonnée dans le passé, aucune marque européenne n’a choisi de se présenter…pas plus que les supposés Trois Grands américains! Personnellement, j’aurais aimé y voir des Ford (Mustang Mach E et F-150 Lightning surtout), des GM (Chevrolet Blazer et Cadillac Lyric surtout) et voir même des Stellantis (Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid et Fiat 500 E surtout) y participer. Quant aux Européens, on aurait pu revoir Mercedes et Porsche (qui ont déjà été des vedettes de cet évènement) et surtout Volkswagen  (avec les ID) s’y pointer. On pourrait partir toute une discussion ici avec leur absence au moment même où les consommateurs canadiens qui sont un peu frileux à l’idée d’acheter un véhicule électrifié pourraient en savoir plus de la plume de journalistes qui savent évaluer de tels véhicules! Si, un peu plus tard, ils perdent des plumes aux mains des asiatiques qui ne craignent pas d’aligner leurs véhicules dans ces évènements…eh bien, ne blâmez pas l’AJAC qui leur aurait donné une superbe tribune!

Une approche différente

Les dirigeants de l’ÉcoRandonnée ont choisi de varier un peu le déroulement de l’évènement cette année en y ajoutant des exercices dynamiques et de petites performances en matière de « consommation » (comme celle de l’utilisation de courant sur une distance prédéterminée). Évidemment, ce qui a retenu mon attention, ce sont les véhicules que nous y avons conduit.  Après un avant-midi d’exercices intéressants (qui m’ont permis de conduire des Lucid, Toyota BZ4X et autres autos), nous avons débuté notre circuit d’évaluation.

Les circuits choisis par l’AJAC nous ont amené à parcourir l’autoroute Jean-Lesage (20) de notre base à Beloeil à Saint-Louis-de-Blandford où une représentante de l’Hydro-Québec nous a accueillis au plus important poste de recharge électrique du Canada de Circuit Électrique. Pour ce faire, j’y ai conduit un VUS Lexus RX 450h + enfichable (PHEV), peut-être un des véhicules hybrides les plus représentatifs de la marque japonaise.

Mon deuxième véhicule fut une Genesis GV70 toute électrique qui m’a mené de Saint-Louis à un atelier assez original de Trois-Rivières, Ingenext où l’on y recycle des pièces de voitures électriques. En effet, au lieu de me retrouver dans une « cour à scrap » où tout y est entreposé pêle-mêle, j’ai pu visiter un entrepôt recouvert où les pièces de voitures électriques (Tesla, Mustang Mach E, Nissan Leaf et autres) sont récupérées de véhicules endommagés ou retirés de la route et conservées dans un ordre impeccable afin de répondre aux demandes de ceux qui recherchent des pièces récupérées de VÉ.

D’Ingenext, j’ai repris la route de la rive sud (en traversant de nouveau l’impressionnant pont Laviolette), cette fois au volant d’une Genesis GV60 toute électrique (pas de grandes différences d’avec la GV70 mais toute aussi agréable à conduire) en direction de Saint-Guillaume où nous devions nous arrêter à la légendaire Fromagerie de la place. Malheureusement, comme c’en est souvent le cas dans ces évènements automobile, nous étions en retard sur notre horaire et la Fromagerie était fermée.

De là, nous sommes revenus à notre base (Hôtel Rive Gauche). J’avais alors pris les commandes de la toute récente version CX-70 hybride du VUM Mazda qui m’a permis de rouler sur de superbes routes longeant la rivière Yamaska en passant par Saint-Hugues. J’en ai profité pour prendre plusieurs photos pittoresques! Quand au Mazda, il s’est avéré plus intéressant à conduire que prévu!

Jour deux

Pour le deuxième jour de conduite de l’ÉcoRandonnée, nous sommes repartis de Beloeil mais cette fois, au lieu de nous diriger vers la région des grandes fermes du Québec, nous avons pris la direction des Cantons-de-l’Est en passant par Saint-Bruno. Ce trajet, je l’ai fait au volant du tout nouveau pick-up intermédiaire Tacoma TrailHunter hybride, une impressionnante camionnette (qui valait, selon le représentant de Toyota, autour de 85 000 $ !). Le trajet fut plus modeste nous menant à un parc municipal où nous avons procédé à un autre échange de véhicule. J’ai bien hâte de pouvoir mettre la main sur ce même véhicule plus tard dans la saison!

J’ai donc dû abandonner mon Tacoma pour me glisser derrière le volant d’un Nissan Ariya e4orce, un véhicule qui est trop souvent passé inaperçu qui devrait gagner à être mieux connu ne serait-ce que par son agrément de conduite. Avec cet Ariya, je me suis dirigé vers le petit village de Foster tout près de Cowansville dans les Cantons-de-l ’est. Tout un changement de paysage alors que la veille, nous étions dans les grands champs d’agriculture et que, maintenant, nous étions aux pieds des Appalaches!

À partir de là, certaines choses se sont gâtées pour moi. Mon septième véhicule d’essai était l’étonnant Hyundai Ioniq 6, un véhicule qui a souvent été mentionné comme étant un des leaders dans le domaine des autos électriques. C’est donc avec plaisir que j’ai tenté de rejoindre mon dernier point de changement de véhicule à l’église de Saint-Pie. Malheureusement, mon téléphone dit « intelligent » a décidé de faire des « folies ». Chaque étape étant guidées par Google (Apple CarPlay) selon les plans dessinés par les organisateurs de l’ÉcoRandonnée, les participants devaient utiliser leur téléphone intelligent pour suivre les routes prédéterminées. À ce point (et ne me demandez pas pourquoi!), mon bon vieux Apple a choisi de me ramener à mon point de rassemblement jusqu’à ce qu’il décide de m’abandonner (une visite au magasin le lendemain m’a confirmé qu’il avait fait son temps et j’ai dû le changer) ce qui m’a amené en retard à mon point de ralliement…et qui a complètement bousillé mes résultats du petit concours! J’ai donc terminé ma journée de retour à Beloeil avec le Hyundai ce qui m’a fait manquer un essai du Lexus UX 300 h (que j’avais, heureusement, conduit plus tôt)!

En fin de journée, j’ai encore une fois participé à d’autres exercices en groupe de l’évènement. J’ai aussi eu droit à un rapide essai de la toute nouvelle Toyota Crown Signia, la remplaçante de la Venza dont il a été question dans ce blogue il y a quelques semaines.

Bien entendu, ces quelques jours de conduite m’ont incité à prendre plusieurs notes (et photos) qui me serviront dans des reportages futurs. Alors que ma collègue Isabelle Havasy (éditrice de la publication L’AUTOMOBILE.ca) se méritait le tant convoité « maillot vert » pour avoir réussi la compilation de la meilleure économie de carburant (et de courant) au cours des deux jours de l’évènement, mes déboires avec le téléphone m’ont relégué vers le dernier quart (dire que j’ai déjà fini deuxième à cet évènement dans le passé) ! Qu’importe, pour moi, ce qui comptait, c’était de « travailler » avec ces véhicules électrifiés. Il me semble que nous avons encore beaucoup à apprendre à leur sujet!
