Why Amandla Stenberg’s Inuit Greenlandic heritage matters
A fews days ago I saw an intersectional feminist Instagram account posting a post about examples of colorism in Hollywood where a dark-skinned black character were played by a light-skinned or mixed black actress (Amandla Stenberg playing the main role in THUG for example)
I agreed (and still do) with this post, but then I looked in the comment section and was bothered by the “whitewashing” of Amandla Stenberg’s etnicity by referring her as biracial when her Danish father is in fact half Inuit Greenlandic.
By referring Amandla as only biracial and half-Danish, you’re invaliding the 300-year old opression that the indigenous people has faced by Denmark. Their culture was partly stripped off. For example the face and finger tattoos which was brough up again when rapper Josef Tarrak and his wife got them as the first Greelandic couple in modern history.
Most Greenlanders do NOT consider themselves Danish and wants indenpendance, but the Danish goverment has refused because they continue to insist that the Greenlanders should fix their own problems first with the high rates of domestic and alcohol abuse and suicide rates, which is bullshit as it’s all a result of the Danish colonialism! Even Greenlanders living in DK (not all, but some) have been let down by the society. Some have even died on the streets!
To get a somewhat better understanding of Greenland’s situation, I would recommend watching “Kampen om Grønland” (The Fight for Greenland) if it’s possible for you.
Of course it should be up to Amandla to choose what to identify as, but calling her biracial is incorrect as bi means 2 in latin. The more correct term would be mixed.
