2024 Game of the Year Countdown #2: The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Sony PlayStation Portable, 2011

According to my save data, I have not played the first installment of the Trails series in six years! This is quite astounding since I think about Trails on the daily, and going in with all the knowledge I have picked up since last playing it, I am fully enjoying all the little bits of lore that are continually sprinkled throughout the dialogue and story. It makes me wonder exactly how much of the larger story had been planned out when Trails in the Sky was initially released in 2004, as we have now celebrated 20 years of this ongoing and highly interconnected series of 13 games (11 localized). 

Trails in the Sky for the PSP is very much an older style JRPG that would feel at home on the PS1 during the Golden Age of JRPGs. Going back to play it after playing the most modern games reminds me of how much the patience of players has been eroded over the years. You can’t skip battle animations. Menu navigating is slow and saving is slower. There is only a very small amount of voice acting, all reserved for combat phrases and grunts. However, these are simply part of the charm of games from this era, and something that I became accustomed to very quickly. 

The inclusion of voice acting in modern games is a great thing, but I think it can take away from the wonderfully depicted character portraits that are full of emotion and nuance as developers have seemingly decided that having both is not necessary. Falcom has yet to reach the same heights with their 3D animation that they had with these 2D portraits. The subtle differences are really cool and I wish we’d get some sort of return to this at some point. Maybe some sort of mini-installment as a flashback DLC or something? I doubt we’d ever get something like that, but I can always wish.

The first Trails in the Sky game, commonly referred to as FC (First Chapter), is undoubtedly the slowest of slow burns when it comes to JRPGs and Trails games, which is really a thing to behold since Trails prides itself on such things. If you want fast, high-flying and nonstop action, you’re going to be sorely disappointed in this game. Luckily, I was not looking for anything other than a fantastic story and world into which I could dive and be fully immersed. Sky FC is the most charming and immersive entry point to the Trails series. I found myself genuinely wanting to spend time just existing in the Trails world. Walking the streets, visiting the restaurants, seeing the sights, watching the plays. I want to live here!

Estelle Bright remains my all time favorite video game character, and getting to see her grow from a young and inexperienced rookie to a more level-headed senior Bracer by the end of FC was a joy for me. The charm and endearing dialogue that we got in the Sky series has yet to be matched, despite the great work we’ve seen in the Crossbell and Erebonian arcs.

There’s just something that has been somewhat lost as the stories and settings have become larger and with dozens upon dozens of characters. I won’t go too far down that road, but it was refreshing to come back to a much more intimate journey once again.

Players who did not start with Trails in the Sky may find the combat to be a bit difficult at times, especially on higher settings since the games weren’t balanced for anything other than Normal. Aidios help you if you decide to play on Nightmare! I played on Hard with my NG+ save and still had to restart a couple of fights. I didn’t exactly make it easy on myself since I brought the precious cinnamon roll, but absolute glass cannon, Tita Russell, with me to the final gauntlet of boss fights, but I couldn’t pass up putting all my favorites together.

Music plays a key role in JRPGs and Falcom is well known for good compositions. Simple location tunes set the tone wonderfully with songs like “A Cat Relaxing in the Sun” and “Ruan.” Meanwhile, “Sophisticated Fight,” while perhaps a bit overplayed, is a nice break from what many traditional JRPG battle tunes sound like. “Silver Will” is an obligatory inclusion in any Sky music discussion, and “Decision to Leave” brings a soft, sad, distant piano sound to a key moment. However, my favorite is still “Hoshi no Arika,” the song that plays during the credits and closing shots. It fits the mood perfectly and brings a tear to my eye as the game rips me in two, demanding I play the sequel once I recover.

Trails in the Sky is just as good today as it was when I first played it, and it continues to be the best entry point to the Trails series, should anyone who has been blatantly ignoring my pleas for the past few years decided to change their minds. It exudes the same sort of feeling that the Golden Age of JRPGs had and that many people desperately miss in modern gaming. With the announcement of a 3D remake coming in 2025, there is no longer the “it looks old” excuse for JRPG fans.

Christen Press, Tobin Heath bring RE-CAP Show back for third season

Christen Press and Tobin Heath are back…as podcasters, at least.

The U.S. women’s national team stars announced Tuesday that their RE-CAP Show will return for a third season, with the first episode coming on Thursday, June 13.

“In its third season, The RE–CAP Show aims to satisfy our fans’ craving for authenticity by revealing behind-the-scenes stories, on-pitch experiences, and our genuine perspectives on the sport’s most significant moments,” said Heath via press release.

“At RE–INC, we exist to champion equality in women’s soccer and sports at large. The third season of The RE–CAP Show embodies this mission, reimagining the way women are seen and experienced in sport by sharing the untold and unfiltered stories of women’s sports,” added Press.

The RE-CAP Show launched in 2023 during the World Cup, and came back for last year’s NWSL playoffs. This new season will feature weekly episodes covering “global soccer, from the Olympics to the NWSL Championship,” with the first episode featuring USWNT legend Abby Wambach and author/podcast host Glennon Doyle as guests.

The news comes as both players have recently addressed their futures on the pitch. Press returned to full training with Angel City FC this week, a major milestone after a two-year battle to return from a torn ACL.

Despite spending all of 2023 on the sidelines, Heath last week declared that she hasn’t closed the door on her playing career. In the meantime, Heath has expanded RE-INC’s programming, hosting The Debrief (a YouTube show breaking down one game of Heath’s choosing).

Riririnnn: Ah, yes, there indeed was a fight between Kurona and me. We were just watching a match of PxG when, "I used to have a crush on Rin," slipped from my mouth. I didn't know that Kurona was unaware of it.

>>> Then after PxG Vs BM match, I just happened to have a conversation with Rin. Just a small, "Hello! How are you?" talk, but my sweet shark skittle had bottled everything up :( so my little conversation with Rin just tipped Kurona completely off!

>>> Kurona was quick to, literally, pull and drag me away from Rin. I didn't like this rude behaviour of him at all!

>>> But obviously, I didn't want to make a scene, so I didn't confront him until we were back home.

>>> Yet, I found myself reaching out to one of his teammates to do an indirect check-up and I'm really glad I did.

>>> His teammate was quick to send me a pic of Kurona and he was in a horrible state. Only two days had passed and yet eyebags looked like he hadn't slept for a whole eternity. His eyes were swollen and his nose was all red by getting rash from over use of napkins.

It is hard for you kick against the goad» (en español: «Saulo, Saulo, ¿por qué me persigues? Rela is a female Twi'lek who stands at 5'7" (1.7 m). Her purple skin is patterned with white tapering lines. She has blue eyes. Like most of her species, Rela is naturally slender in build, but her Jedi training has toned her figure. After the explosion she survived, Rela has a hearing implant and some scarring on the left side of her face. As a Jedi, Rela wears beige robes. They have dark brown seams & the gaping sleeves stop just below her elbows to meet dark brown wrist guards. Her boots are dark brown as well & they come up to her knees. Thin dark brown bands decorate her twin lekku.

PERSONALITY

What her fellow Younglings called strange and antisocial, the elder Jedi praised as studious and dedicated. In a way, Rela is all of those things. Unlike most creatures, who regard the Force as a phenomenon or energy, she has always seen it as a friend who is generous if you ask for its help. She spent her childhood in the Temple talking to the Force. As a result, she developed the capacity to learn the less visibly impressive techniques of the Jedi quickly. Aside from that, Rela is a naturally intelligent person who enjoys knowledge. In her free time, she reads histories of various species, which makes her knowledgeable about many cultures and customs. When she interacts with others, she is always polite and open-minded. She is one of the Jedi who sees the clone troopers assigned to work with her as comrades rather than underlings. Her Jedi elders have noted that she can be indecisive regarding decisions that directly affect the happiness of other (non-hostile) creatures. They also disliked her relationship with her Master, which they believed (without evidence) bordered on romance.

BACKGROUND (each era is a different verse)

Rela is discovered by the Jedi when she is already three years old. Her parents only give her up because they are poor and want her to have a better life. Other kids at the Temple think she is weird, due to her habit of reading by herself on high ledges. When she is almost 13, Rela fears she won't be chosen as a Padawan, as she is almost too old to be an Initiate anymore. Maglos Nerot, a Miraluka, chooses her to be his Padawan & they become very close. On one mission, they race to stop a bombing & get caught in the explosion. He dies & she spends weeks in a bacta tank. Because she and her Master managed to save the people targeted, Rela is promoted to Knight once she wakes up. She is 20 at this point.

In the Old Republic Era, Rela simply continues to serve the Republic. She switches from studying to being a Sage to being a Shadow as the war worsens because she wants to take a more active role.

In the Rise of the Empire/Rebellion Era, she’s a freelance Jedi Shadow, helping where she can. In 19 BBY, she survives Order 66. It may be because she joins Sidious & Vader after a confrontation on Mustafar, where she takes the name Darth Venator. Otherwise, she hides out on Denon, where she finds her parents. Later, she moves to Nar Shaddaa, to work undercover as a dancer in a club. Once she hears about the rebels, she promotes herself to Master (this is in her late 30s) & helps the Alliance on missions. The Rebel Alliance ends in 4 ABY, when she's 43. She’s still helping people & investigating the beginnings of the First Order. The Mandalorian takes place in 9 ABY.

In the Legends timeline/verse, Rela awakens in 30 ABY, when the One Sith are founded on Korriban. This is because she was taken out of her bacta tank in 20 BBY to make room for someone determined to need it more. The doctors placed her in a cryo-cycle stasis pod, thinking they'd revive her a week later, but the pod ended up being misplaced.

Her connection with the Force enables her to learn dual-wielding fairly quickly. She mostly opts to retreat and attack as necessary, rather than open herself up to the possibility of being disarmed. When on the defensive, especially in close quarters, Rela uses slight movements to deflect blaster fire & melee attacks. She often uses a subtle Force push to tire her enemies out in duels.
