MINNEAPOLIS — Winter is returning to Minnesota after a warm February. According to the National Weather Service, more than 12 inches of snow are possible in the Twin Cities metro area by Wednesday. Hang glider crash

The torsion failure resulted in the complete in-flight fracture of the right-side spar. The Le Sueur County Sheriffs Office says the 'motorized or powered' hang. The crash happened at around 1,700ft of the 2,500ft Monument Peak, a popular spot for hang-gliding and. This evidence indicates that the right-side spar suffered a torsion failure during flight when the torsion load exceeded the strength of the delaminated composite sandwich structure. A 60-year-old man was hospitalized Wednesday after a hang glider crash in southern Minnesota. The man died at the scene, Santa Clara Sheriff's Office spokesman Russell Davis confirmed. The lack of such evidence in this area indicates that the bond strength was poor at best. A properly bonded face sheet that was separated from the core material would exhibit either fractured honeycomb material or significant pullouts from the face sheet with corresponding exposed fibers. There is a lack of adhesive bonding between the carbon fiber sheet and the Aramid honeycomb core. Furthermore, the fracture here is angled suggesting that the primary loading at the time of the failure was torsional in nature.įigure 2 shows an area of the outer face sheet at the right-side spar fracture which was found delaminated. The location of the right-side spar fracture is much further outboard than the swing distance of the transom, and therefore appears to be unrelated to transom contact. This geometric match, coupled with a buckled left side transom bar, indicated that the left-side spar fracture was caused by impact with the transom at the time of contact with the ground. The location of the left side spar fracture was congruent with the swing distance of the transom corner. Figure 1 shows the hang glider with the wing fabric removed from the right-side wing. The wing fabric is draped around the spar and ribs, and it is tightened into place with Velcro and lines to the ribs. The wing ribs are attached to the spar and hinge outward into place for assembly of the fabric covered wing prior to flight. The primary structural component of the hang glider rigid wing is a D-shaped carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer face sheet, honeycomb sandwich structure, cantilever box spar. An accident investigation found that the main wing spar completely fractured in two locations: one on the left wing 48 inches outboard of the aircraft centerline, and one on the right wing 83 inches outboard of the aircraft centerline. The pilot sustained serious injuries but survived. Delamination of outer face sheet of box sparĪ rigid-wing hang glider was being piloted near Point of the Mountain, Utah when it suffered a catastrophic in-flight failure and crashed. Avian flu killed at least 25 wild bird species in 55 Minnesota counties - Duluth News Tribune

The spring outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza that hit wild birds hard across the U.S. killed at least 275 birds from 25 different species in 55 counties across Minnesota.

That’s the update this week from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources where wildlife health experts say the outbreak appears to be nearly over.

Bird experts had already given the all-clear for people to resume feeding songbirds now that the disease appears to have calmed down as the spring migration ends. Bird experts had said songbirds were always at low risk to catch the disease.

Across the nation, thousands of wild birds have died from the disease that also struck commercial and backyard poultry farms, forcing millions of birds to be destroyed. The disease also was confirmed in foxes in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Minnesota DNR officials said nearly 700 birds have been tested in the state so far, but that they almost certainly haven’t found all cases of the disease within the state. It may never be clear how hard the disease hit vulnerable populations of birds or species of birds harder to find.

“We have no solid number of wild birds affected, or a way to scale this outbreak to a population level at this point,’’ Michelle Carstensen, the Minnesota DNR’s wildlife health program leader, told the News Tribune.

In Minnesota, the disease hit waterfowl and the raptors that eat waterfowl especially hard. Species impacted include crows, pelicans, bald eagles, barred owls, broad-winged hawks, Canada geese, common goldeneyes, loon, ravens, Cooper’s hawks, dark-eyed juncos, great-horned owls, hooded mergansers, mallards, northern harriers, red-shouldered hawks, red-tailed hawks, Ross’s geese, rough-legged hawks, snow geese, trumpeter swans, turkey vultures, white-fronted geese and wood ducks.

The DNR said the disease killed birds in 55 counties, including St. Louis, Carlton, Itasca, Cass, Aitkin, Pine, Anoka, Blue Earth, Brown, Carver, Chippewa, Chisago, Clay, Crow Wing, Dakota, Faribault, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Grant, Hennepin, Houston, Hubbard, Isanti, Kandiyohi, Le Sueur, Lyon, Mahnomen, Martin, McLeod, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Murray, Nicollet, Nobles, Olmsted, Polk, Pope, Ramsey, Red Lake, Rice, Roseau, Scott, Sherburne, Stearns, Steele, Stevens, Todd, Wabasha, Wadena, Washington, Watonwan, Wilkin, Winona and Wright.

Only one human case of bird flu has been confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S. during this outbreak. The case affected a commercial poultry industry worker in Colorado who recovered fully.

The Fountain

Our campus has a beautiful fountain that has been loved by students for many years. Come hangout with your buddies, have a picnic, take photos, work on summer classes, or read a good book next to the fountain. The fountain is such a relaxing place, I recommend going to see it.

Minneopa State Park

There are many things to do at Minneopa State Park. This is one of my favorite places in Mankato! You can walk, run, or bike on the trails that circle the falls. You can even take the stairway down to the valley of the falls, for an up close and spectacular view. You can also hike through grasslands that overlook the Minnesota River Valley. If you like to view historic buildings, you should stop and take a look at the Seppmann Mill. It is a mill that is made of native stone and lumber. The Seppmann Mill is such a cool sight.

Minneopa State Park has a road that you can view bison on. The bison live in this area, it is such a cool experience. If you have never done this before, I highly recommend it. The bison road is open Thursday-Tuesday from 9AM to 7PM.

Red Jacket Trail

The Red Jacket Trail is a must do for summer. This trail utilizes railroad trestles—the Red Jacket Trestle is one of the utilized trestles. The trail is amazing, it starts with a view of the Blue Earth River Valley, and ends with heavily wooded areas. I have walked this trail many times, and it is enjoyable every time!

Sibley Farm

Need an animal fix? Stop by the Sibley Farm! The farm is located in Sibley Park. The animals you will find here are alpacas, calves, goats, peacocks, horses, lambs, and chicks. You will also see Koi fish in the pond. The farm includes a barn that is available for reservations. Plan a picnic in the barn and hangout with the animals for a fun filled day.

Moondog’s Baseball Game

If you are a sports fan, you will enjoy watching the Moondog’s play. They are a minor league baseball team in Mankato, and they play games all summer long. As a bonus, their mascot puts on a fun show at every baseball game.

Golf

Mankato has eight golf courses around the area for you to enjoy. If you are looking to get outside, relax, or play a competitive game with your buddies, these courses are the spot for you. The golf courses near Mankato are Minneopa Golf Club, Mankato Golf Club, Terrace View Golf Course, North Links Golf Course, Shoreland Golf and Tennis Club, Prairie Ridge Golf, and Le Sueur Country Club.
