Wood Engraving Wednesday
HOWARD PHIPPS
This wood engraving of Eggardon Hill in Dorset, England by British artist Howard Phipps (b. 1954) was produced in 2019 for the publication 2020 Vision: Nineteen Wood Engravers, One Collector, and the Artists Who Inspired Them, printed in 2020 by Patrick Randle’s Nomad Letterpress at the Whittington Press in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in an edition of 340 copies for the 100th anniversary of the Society of Wood Engravers. In the book, Phipps identifies Edgar Degas, John Nash, and Eric Ravilious as strong influences. Phipps himself started off as a painter in the 1970s, making only occasional prints. His development as an engraver coincided with the revival of the Society of Wood Engravers in the 1980s. About this print, he writes:
I was interested in the ancient signs of humanity apparent in this landscape, and I like to use light to reveal the underlying sculpture of the striking hill forms, where chalk trackways draw the eye into or around deep combes.
Phipps was born in Colwyn Bay, North Wales and was raised in Cheltenham, England. He studied Fine Art at Gloucestershire College of Art in the early 1970s and taught in Plymouth for a while before settling in Salisbury in 1980. He was elected Royal West of England Academy (RWA) Academician in 1979 and a member of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1985.

Clarice Beckett (Australian painter) 1887 - 1935
Bowl of Calendula, s.d.
oil on composition board
Clarice Majoribanks Beckett was an Australian Tonalist painter whose works are featured in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of South Australia.
Beckett was born in Casterton, Victoria, the daughter of Joseph Clifden Beckett (ca. 1852-1936), a bank manager, and his wife Elizabeth Kate, née Brown (ca. 1855-1934). Her grandfather was John Brown, a Scottish master builder who had designed and built Como House and its gardens in South Yarra, Victoria.
Clarice was a boarder at Queen's College, Ballarat until 1903, before spending a year at Melbourne Church of England Girls' Grammar School. She showed artistic ability, and after leaving school took private lessons in charcoal drawing at Ballarat. In 1914 she went to Melbourne's National Gallery School, completing three years of study under Frederick McCubbin before continuing her studies under Max Meldrum, whose controversial theories became a pivotal factor in her own art practice.
In 1919 her parents moved from Bendigo to the Melbourne bayside suburb of Beaumaris and, with their health failing, Beckett assumed household responsibilities that virtually dictated the structure of the rest of her life, severely limiting her artistic endeavour. Beckett could only go out during the dawn and dusk to paint as most of her day was spent caring for them.
Beckett is recognised as one of Australia's most important modernist artists. Despite a talent for portraiture and a keen public appreciation for her still lifes, Beckett preferred the solo, outdoor process of painting landscapes. She relentlessly painted sea and beachscapes, rural and suburban scenes, often enveloped in the atmospheric effects of early mornings or evening. Her subjects were often drawn from the Beaumaris area, where she lived for the latter part of her life. She was one of the first of her group to use a painting trolley, or mobile easel to make it easier to paint outdoors in different locations.
Max Meldrum once stated, "There would never be a great woman artist and there never had been. Woman had not the capacity to be alone". It is believed this reflects the overall opinion of the period; Beckett was continually put down by the critics and sold little in her lifetime.
While painting the wild sea off Beaumaris during a big storm in 1935, Beckett developed pneumonia and died four days later in a hospital at Sandringham. She was buried in the Cheltenham Memorial Park (Wangara Road) not far from another noted female artist, Mary Vale. She was only 48 when she died, the year after her mother's death.

Blog Post #2
Chapter 5 of the textbook states: “The professional interpreter facilitates these perceptions by providing information, activities, trails, exhibits, blogs, websites, and many other methods to develop the perceptive skills of each visitor. “
This quote perfectly encapsulates the interpreter's role of enriching the visitors' experiences through various engaging platforms. For me, this is a great way to bring harmony to the community. Visitors can connect to deeper levels while sharing common interests and enriching a deeper appreciation for the natural world. But what exactly does this look like? How can we continue to foster this sense of community?
Personally, my ideal role of an environmental interpreter as a mountain bike enthusiast would involve leading my family and friends through winding trails in my local neighborhood such as the Oak Ridges trail, Centennial Park Loop, Cold Creek Conservation Area Loop, and the Cheltenham Badlands loop. This role is not simply guiding my family and friends through the landscapes but also allowing me to foster a connection to the natural world around them. While navigating I would offer insights about the historical significance of the areas we explore. The Cheltenham Badlands for example the Cheltenham Badlands reveals an early 20th century land mismanagement. The land was overfarmed and overgrazed, which ultimately led to erosion and revealed the red/orange shale. This is the barren landscape we see today and reminds us of the impacts of human activity on the environment.
Going on these trails often sparked a lot of curiosity and not only allowed me to delve into research myself to learn about the archaeological history of these trails but also into their ecological diversity. These trails are home to various plants and animal species each adapting to their unique environmental conditions. As I continued to guide my family and friends through these trails, I emphasized the importance of species interconnectedness and maintaining such to support ecological balance. This aligns perfectly with the textbook definition of the interpreter's role to "enrich visitors' experience and enhance their understanding of the environment."
There are practical skills required for this role which include leadership and strong communication/interpersonal skills. Effective leadership ensures safety as a priority and the overall unity of the group by conducting routine risk assessments. Making sure everyone is comfortable ensures group cohesion and motivation. Effective communication to assist in delivering complex ecological concepts and ensuring they resonate with the audience. Being able to break down these complex concepts into basic understandable segments will allow the audience to remain engaged and foster discussion among the group.

The Role of Training in Maintaining Excellence in Healthcare Staffing
Summary
Training is essential to delivering high-quality healthcare services and ensuring consistent excellence in healthcare staffing. For organisations like a nursing agency in Cheltenham, investing in training improves caregiver skills, enhances patient outcomes, and ensures compliance with healthcare standards. This blog explores why training matters, how it impacts healthcare staffing, and the strategies that make training effective in the healthcare sector. We also highlight the role of ongoing education in adapting to challenges like staff shortages and evolving patient needs, demonstrating how training safeguards quality care and empowers healthcare professionals.
Why is training important in healthcare staffing?
Training is the foundation of exceptional healthcare services. Healthcare professionals face diverse challenges, from managing complex patient needs to ensuring compliance with stringent regulations. Without proper training, even the most skilled staff may struggle to meet these demands.
Here’s why training is crucial:
Improved patient care: Well-trained staff provide better care, reducing errors and enhancing patient safety.
Enhanced job satisfaction: Staff with up-to-date skills feel confident and motivated in their roles, reducing burnout.
Regulatory compliance: Training ensures adherence to healthcare regulations, minimising legal risks.
Adaptability: The healthcare landscape evolves constantly. Training prepares staff to adapt to new technologies, treatments, and protocols.
For example, a study by the UK’s Care Quality Commission (CQC) found that healthcare providers with robust training programmes delivered consistently higher patient satisfaction scores.
What challenges do healthcare organisations face without proper training?
Healthcare organisations that neglect training risk numerous challenges, including:
High turnover rates: A lack of training can lead to dissatisfaction among staff, increasing turnover rates.
Decreased quality of care: Untrained staff may struggle to manage patient complexities, leading to errors or poor outcomes.
Regulatory breaches: Non-compliance with training requirements can result in penalties or operational shutdowns.
For example, in the United Kingdom, the National Health Service (NHS) reported that inadequate training contributed to 22% of reported care delivery errors in 2023. This highlights how vital it is to prioritise training in every healthcare setting.
How does training improve healthcare staffing outcomes?
Comprehensive training directly impacts the quality and efficiency of healthcare staffing. Here’s how:
Building competence
Training equips staff with the technical and interpersonal skills needed to excel in their roles. This includes everything from understanding medical protocols to practising empathy during patient interactions.
Boosting confidence
Trained staff are more confident in making critical decisions, which improves their ability to work independently and in teams.
Reducing absenteeism
Continuous training encourages engagement, reducing absenteeism and improving workforce stability.
Meeting specialised needs
A nursing agency in Cheltenham, for instance, can use tailored training to ensure staff are equipped to handle specific local healthcare requirements, such as elderly care or mental health support.
What types of training are most effective in healthcare?
Different training methods address the diverse needs of healthcare staff. The most effective include:
On-the-job training
Practical, hands-on learning ensures staff gain experience in real-world scenarios.
Workshops and seminars
These provide opportunities for skill enhancement and professional networking.
E-learning platforms
Flexible online courses allow staff to learn at their own pace, making training accessible and scalable.
Compliance training
Focused on regulatory requirements, this ensures staff understand and follow legal and ethical guidelines.
Leadership development
Equips team leaders with the skills needed to manage and inspire their teams.
For instance, Retain Healthcare has adopted a blended approach, combining hands-on learning with e-learning tools, to ensure all staff meet the highest standards of care.
How does continuous education benefit healthcare staffing?
Ongoing education is critical for maintaining excellence in healthcare. Here are its benefits:
Staying updated
Continuous education ensures staff are aware of the latest medical advancements, technologies, and best practices.
Reducing errors
Staff trained on current procedures are less likely to make errors, improving patient safety.
Career progression
Continuous learning opens pathways for career growth, retaining talent within the organisation.
Addressing shortages
Upskilling existing staff can mitigate the impact of staff shortages, a persistent challenge in the healthcare sector.
For example, the NHS reported a 15% increase in staff retention rates in 2022 after implementing structured continuous education programmes.
How can healthcare organisations ensure effective training programmes?
Creating an impactful training programme requires careful planning and execution. Here’s how organisations can succeed:
Assess training needs
Identify skill gaps through staff assessments and patient feedback.
Customise training modules
Tailor programmes to meet the specific needs of staff and patients.
Leverage technology
Use e-learning platforms and simulation tools to enhance learning experiences.
Measure effectiveness
Regularly evaluate training outcomes through assessments and performance reviews.
Involve staff
Encourage feedback from staff to refine and improve training initiatives.
What role does Retain Healthcare play in advancing training?
Retain Healthcare recognises the transformative impact of training in achieving excellence in healthcare staffing. As a leading nursing agency in Cheltenham, Retain Healthcare prioritises staff development through customised training programmes that combine practical learning with continuous education. By fostering a culture of growth, Retain Healthcare empowers its team to deliver outstanding care tailored to each client’s needs.

10 Reasons to Visit the Cotswolds
For many people, the Cotswolds is the real England (or, at least, how it used to be). Here you can enjoy the idyllic beauty of honey-coloured stone villages, rolling hills and countryside and ancient churches in a landscape known for its timeless appeal. Many Cotswold towns and villages have changed little over the centuries. Here are 10 reasons to visit.
1. Blenheim Palace
Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a stunning example of Baroque architecture and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Set within over 2,000 acres of parkland, it boasts beautifully landscaped gardens designed by Capability Brown, a rich history, and impressive art collections. Visitors can explore the lavish state rooms, wander through the formal gardens, and enjoy various events held throughout the year.
Explore the home to the 12th Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, the birthplace of Churchill, and a World Heritage Site with over 300 years of history with tickets to Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire.*
2. Bourton-on-the-Water
Known as the "Venice of the Cotswolds," Bourton-on-the-Water is famous for its idyllic setting on the River Windrush. The village features low bridges, quaint stone cottages, and a charming high street lined with unique shops and tearooms. The Cotswold Motoring Museum and Model Village are popular attractions, offering a glimpse into the region's history and miniature village life.
Enjoy a visit to the Cotswolds with a day trip from London. Stop along the way at locations like Bourton-on-the-Water and Broadway Tower and enjoy cream tea at Lower Slaughters.*
3. Quintessential English Villages
The Cotswolds is home to numerous picturesque villages, each with its own unique charm. Bibury, often described as the most beautiful village in England, is famous for Arlington Row, a series of 14th-century weavers' cottages. Castle Combe, with its medieval market cross and stone cottages, is another must-see.
4. Stunning Natural Scenery
The Cotswolds’ rolling hills, lush meadows, and ancient woodlands offer breathtaking natural beauty. Walking and cycling are popular ways to explore the landscape, with the Cotswold Way providing 102 miles of scenic trails from Chipping Campden to Bath. The region is also dotted with scenic viewpoints such as Broadway Tower, offering panoramic vistas.
5. Historical Sites and Gardens
In addition to Blenheim Palace, the Cotswolds boasts numerous historical sites and gardens. Sudeley Castle in Winchcombe, with its rich royal history and award-winning gardens, is a highlight. Hidcote Manor Garden, a masterpiece of Arts and Crafts design, features intricately designed outdoor "rooms."
6. Traditional Pubs and Culinary Delights
The Cotswolds is a foodie’s paradise, with traditional pubs, fine dining restaurants, and local markets. Many pubs, like The Wild Rabbit in Kingham, offer locally sourced food and cozy atmospheres. Don't miss out on trying local specialties such as Cotswold lamb, Gloucestershire cheese, and craft ales.
Join a Cotswolds day tour from London and spend a relaxed day exploring charming scenery, travelling along narrow country lanes, and visiting historic towns and villages.*
7. Cultural Events and Festivals
Throughout the year, the Cotswolds hosts a variety of cultural events and festivals. The Cheltenham Literature Festival attracts renowned authors and literary enthusiasts. Other notable events include the Chipping Norton Literary Festival, the Cotswold Show, and various music and arts festivals celebrating local talent.
8. Rich Artistic Heritage
The Cotswolds has long been a haven for artists and craftsmen. The village of Stow-on-the-Wold is known for its antique shops and art galleries. The New Brewery Arts in Cirencester offers workshops and showcases contemporary craft and design. The region's artistic heritage is also celebrated through numerous open studios and craft fairs.
9. Cozy Accommodations
From luxury hotels to charming bed and breakfasts, the Cotswolds offers a range of accommodations to suit every taste. Stay in a traditional stone cottage, a historic inn, or a boutique hotel like Barnsley House, which features a renowned spa and beautiful gardens.
10. Accessibility and Location
The Cotswolds' central location makes it easily accessible from major cities like London, Birmingham, and Bristol. Excellent road and rail links mean you can escape to the countryside for a weekend or longer, experiencing the tranquility and beauty of this quintessentially English region.
Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, foodie, or culture enthusiast, the Cotswolds has something to offer everyone. Its combination of stunning landscapes, rich history, and charming villages make it a destination not to be missed.

cannot believe it’s come to this but it looks like i’m gonna have to defend bilson’s honor after my casual affectionate slander spread the misconception that he was a bad artist.
his subjects tended to be plants & animals, especially birds (naturally, since he was an ornithologist), and landscapes. it's hard to classify his work strictly as either art or scientific illustration. he had a really impressive skill when it came to accurately capturing what he saw. from scott on the discovery expedition: "In addition to the drawings of land, pack, icebergs and Barrier, the primary object of which was scientific and geographical, Wilson has left a number of paintings of atmospheric phenomena which are not only scientifically accurate but are also exceedingly beautiful. Of such are the records of auroral displays, parhelions, paraselene, lunar halos, fog bows, irridescent clouds, refracted images of mountains and mirage generally. If you look at a picture of a parhelion by Wilson not only can you be sure that the mock suns, circles and shafts appeared in the sky as they are shown on paper, but you can also rest assured that the number of degrees between, say, the sun and the outer ring of light were in fact such as he has represented them. You can also be certain in looking at his pictures that if cirrus cloud is shown, then cirrus and not stratus cloud was in the sky: if it is not shown, then the sky was clear. It is accuracy such as this which gives an exceptional value to work viewed from a scientific standpoint."
painting of cheltenham, where he was from, made in 1895
primrose illustration 1896
emperor penguins painted on the discovery expedition, 1904
in antarctica, where it was too cold to paint with watercolors outside, he had a technique where he would sketch a scene and quickly jot down the names of the colors so he could paint them later. he had an incredible memory for color. apsley cherry-garrard describes his process in worst journey in the world: "He sketched quickly with bare fingers and mittened hands, jotting down the outlines of hills and clouds, and pencilling in the colours by name. After a minute, more or less, the fingers become too cold for such work, and they must be put back into the wool and fur mitts until they are again warm enough to continue. Pencil and sketch book, a Winsor and Newton, were carried in a little blubber-stained wallet on his belt."
painting of an iceberg off cape evans done in 1911
paraselene, 1911
view of hut point from observation hill, also 1911
you can find more of his work on the spri & cheltenham museum websites. they really are beautiful, in my opinion no other artist has depicted antarctica with so much reverence.
look. he even learned how to paint a seal.
