ARCTIC MONKEYS: Inside Alex Turner's Head
Words Sylvia Patterson Portrait John Wright
The day Arctic Monkeys moved into their six bedroom, Spanish-style villa in the Hollywood Hills, where the first-floor balcony looked over the patio swimming pool, they knew exactly what to do.
"From the balcony, you could get on t'roof and jump in't pool," chirps the Monkeys' most gregarious member, drummer Matt Helders, in his homely Yorkshire way. "We looked at it and said, That's definitely gonna happen. So by the end, we did a couple of 'em. Somersaults in t'pool, from the roof. At night time."
In January 2011, as Sheffield and the rest of Britain endured its bitterest winter in a century, Arctic Monkeys capered among the palm trees, eschewing hotels for a millionaire's Hollywood homestead as they recorded and mixed their fourth studio album, Suck It and See.
The four Monkeys, alongside producer James Ford and engineer James Brown, lived what they called the "American man thing": watched Super Bowl on giant TVs, played ping-pong, hired two Mustangs, cooked cartoon Tom And Jerry-sized steaks on barbecues on Sundays, had girlfriends over to visit, all cooking and drinking around the colossal outdoor kitchen area featuring a fridge and two dishwashers. Living atop the Hills, they could see the Pacific Ocean beyond by day, the infinite glittering lights of downtown LA by night.
Every day, en route to Sound City Studios, they'd travel in a seven-seater four-by-four through the mountains, via bohemian 60s enclave Laurel Canyon, blaring out the tunes: The Stones Roses, The Cramps, the Misfits' Hollywood Babylon. For the sometime teenage art-punk renegades whose guitarist, Jamie Cook, was once ejected from London's Met Bar for refusing to pay €22 for two beers, the comedy rock'n'roll life still feels, however, absolutely nothing like reality.
NICK O'MALLEY: "It were really as if we were on holiday. When we came back it's the most post-holiday blues I've ever had!"
JAMIE COOK: "It's hard to comment on that. It were just really good fun."
MATT HELDERS: "We always said, As soon as things like that feel normal, we're in trouble. But it's just funny. You might think it would get more and more serious as you get older but it's getting funnier. We've done four albums now and I'm still only 24, I'm still immature to an extent. So who cares?"
Alex? Al? Are you there?
ALEX TURNER: "Yeah, it were good times. But we were in the studio most of the time. So there's no real wild Hollywood stories. Hmn. Yeah."
Wednesday, 16 March 2011, Strongroom Bar, Shoreditch, East London, 11am. Alex Turner, 25, slips entirely alone into an empty art-crowd brasserie looking like an indie girl's indie dream boy: mop-top bouffant hair which coils, in curlicues, directly into his cheekbones, army-green waist-length jacket, baggy-arsed skinny jeans, black cord zip-up cardigan, simple gold chain, supermoon sized chocolate-brown eyes.
Almost six years after I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor became the indie-punk anthem of a generation (from the first of Arctic Monkeys' three Number 1 albums), and nothing prepares you for the curious phenomenon of Alex Turner "in conversation". Unlike so many of the Monkeys frenetic early songs, he operates in slow motion, seemingly underwater, carrying a protective shell on his back, perhaps indie rock's very own diamond-backed terrapin. The most celebrated young wordsmith in rock'n roll today talks fulsomely, in fact, only in shapeless, curling sentences punctuated with "maybe... hmn.. yeah", an anecdotal wilderness sketching pictures as vague as a cloud. He is, though, simultaneously adorable: amenable, gentle, graceful, and as Northern as a 70s grandpa who literally greets you with "ey oop?".
"People think I'm a miserable bastard," he notes, cheerfully, "but it's just the way me face falls." Still profoundly private, if not as hermetically sealed as a vacuum-packed length of Frankfurter, his fante-shy reticence extends not only to his personal life (his four-year relationship with It-girl/TV presenter Alexa Chung, whom he never mentions) but to insider details generally. Take the Monkeys’ Hollywood high jinks documented above: not one word of it was described by Turner. Before Q was informed by his other Monkey bandmates, Turner’s anecdotal aversion unfolded like this:
Describe the lovely villa you were in. AT: "Well... we certainly had a... good view."
Of what? AT: "Well, we were up quite high."
The downtown LA lights going on forever? AT: "I dunno. It was definitely that thing of getting a bit of sort of sunshine. Is it vitamin D? If you can get vitamin D on your record, you've got a bit of a head start. So we'd get up and drive to the studio."
What were you driving? AT: "Nothing... spectacular. But yeah, we'd drive up the studio, spend all day there and sort of, y know, get back. To be honest... we had limited time. So we spent as much time as possible kind of getting into it, like, in the studio.
So your favourite adventures were what? AT: "Well, they were really… minimal. We were working out there!"
Any nightclubs or anything, perhaps? AT: "You really want the goss 'ere, don't you?"
Yes, please. AT: "I could make some up. Nah!"
And this was on the second time of asking. It's perhaps obvious: Alex Turner, one of the most prolific songwriters of his generation (four Monkeys albums and two EPs in five years, The Last Shadow Puppets side-project, a bewitching acoustic soundtrack for his actor/video director friend Richard Ayoade's feature-length debut Submarine), is dedicated only to the cause – of being the best he can possibly be. He simply remembers the songs much more than the somersaults.
Throughout 2009, Arctic Monkeys toured third album Humbug – the record mostly made in the Californian desert with Queens Of The Stone Age man-monolith Josh Homme – across the planet. While hardly some cranium-blistering opus, its heavier sonic meanderings considerably slowed the Arctic Monkeys' live sets and on 23 August 2009, Q watched them headline the Lowlands Festival, Holland and witnessed a hitherto unthinkable sight – swathes of perplexed Monkeys fans trudging away from the stage. With the sludge rock mood matching their cascading dude-rock hair it seemed obvious: they'd smoked way too much outrageously strong weed in the desert.
"Heheheh, yeah," responds Turner, unperturbed. "That's your theory. You probably weren't alone."
Back in the Strongroom Bar, Turner's arm is now nonchalantly draped along the back of a beaten-up brown leather sofa. He ponders his band's somewhat contrary reputation…
"I think starting the headline set at Reading with a cover of a Nick Cave tune perhaps was a bit contrary. D'youknowhat Imean?! But to be honest, that summer, at those festivals, we had a great time. And I know some fans enjoyed those sets 10 times more. And you can't just do, y’know, another Mardy Bum or whatever. Because how could you, really?"
With Humbug, notes Turner, "I went into corners I hadn't before, because I needed to see what were there," but by spring 2010 he wanted their fourth album to be "more song-based" and less lyrically "removed". He was "organised this time", studied "the good songwriters" (from Nick Cave, The Byrds and Leonard Cohen to country colossi Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline), discovered "the other three strings" on his guitar, and wrote 12 songs through the spring and summer of 2010, mostly in the fourth-floor New York flat he shared with Chung before the couple moved back to London late last summer (the New York MTV show It's On With Alexa Chung was cancelled after two seasons). The result: major-key melodies, harmonised singing and classic song structures.
At the same time he revisited the opposite extreme: bands such as Black Sabbath and The Stooges ("we wanted a few wig-outs as well"); he was also still heavily influenced by the oil-thick grinder rock of Josh Homme, who is clearly now a permanent Monkeys hero. After four months' rehearsals in London, on 8 January the Monkeys relocated to LA for five swift weeks of production and Homme came to visit, singing backing vocals on All My Own Stunts. Tequila was involved.
"Tequila is probably me favourite," manages Turner, by way of an anecdote. "But it takes a certain climate... It's not the same... in the rain. Yeah. [Looks to be contemplating a lyric] Tequila in the rain."
Vocally, he developed the caramel richness first unveiled on The Last Shadow Puppets' Scott Walker-esque The Age Of The Understatement, finding a crooner's vibrato. "Everything before was so tight,” he notes, clutching his neck. "Probably just through nerves. That's just not there any more." Suck It and See contains at least four of the most glittering, sing-along, world-class pop songs (and obvious singles) of Arctic Monkeys' career: the towering, clanging She's Thunderstorms, the summertime stunner The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala, the heavenly harmonised title track and the Echo & The Bunnymen-esque jangly pop of closer That's Where You're Wrong.
Elsewhere, in typically contrary "fashion", there's preposterous head-banger bedlam (Brick By Brick, the rollicking faux-heavy rock download they released in March "just for fun", featuring vocals by Helders; Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair, and Library Pictures). News arrives that the first single proper will be Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair. Q is perplexed. Brilliantly titled, certainly, but arriving after Brick By Brick, the new album will appear to the planet as some comedy pastiche metal album for 12-year-old boys.
You've got all these colossal, summery, indie-pop classics and you've gone for... The Chair? AT: [Laughing uproariously] "The Chair! I'm now calling it The Chair, that's cool. Well for once it weren't even our suggestion. It was Laurence's (Bell, Domino label boss). And I were, Fucking too right! He's awesome. It'd be good to get a bit of fucking rock'n'roll out there, won't it? It's riffs. It's loud. It's funny."
If you don't release The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala as a single I'm going round Domino to kick Laurence's "awesome" butt. AT: "I think it'll be the next one!"
The record's title, meanwhile, could've been more enigmatically original than the un-loved phrase Suck It and See. The band, struggling with ideas due to the opposing sonic moods, invented an inspiration-conjuring ruse: to think of new names for effects pedals in the style of Tom Wolfe, Turner being long enamoured with the American author's legendarily psychedelic books The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby, "cos that just sounds awesome".
"There's the Big Muff pedal," he elaborates, "That’s the classic. I've got the Valve Slapper. And there's the Tube Screamer. So we came up with the Thunder Suckle Fuzz Canyon. And… wait till I assemble it in me mind… em… it'll come to me… The Blonde-O-Sonic Shimmer Trap. So we were going for summat like that."
A wasted opportunity?
"Nah. Because some of those things ended up in the lyrics anyway. Suck It and See was just easier."
Alex Turner, rock'n'roll's premier descriptive art-poet, still writes his lyrics long-hand in spiral-bound notebooks. "Writing lyrics is a craft that I've practised a bit now," he avers. "In me notebook it looks like sums. Theories. There's words and arrows going everywhere. There's always a few possibilities and I write the word 'OR' in a square."
For our most celebrated colloquial sketch-writer of the everyday observation (all betting pencils, boy slags and ice-cream van aggravations) the more successful he becomes, the less he orbits the ordinary. "I'm not struggling with that, to be honest," he decides. "In fact I'm enjoying writing lyrics much more than I did. Stories. Describing a picture. Um. There's quite a bit of weather and time in this one. Which is probably not reassuring. 'Oh God, he's writing about the weather.' Maybe leave that out!"
There are also some direct, funny, romantic observations: "That's not a skirt, girl, that's a sawn-off shotgun/And I only hope you've got it aimed at me..." (from the title track).
Some of your romantic quips, now, must be about Alexa. AT: "Right. Yeah. Definitely. Well... there's always been that side to our songs, when we weren't writing about... the fucking taxi rank. It's kind of inevitably... people you're with." [At the mention of Chung's name, Turner is visibly aggrieved, head sliding into his neck, terrapin-esque indeed.]
It must have been very grounding being in a proper relationship through all this madness. Because if you weren't, girls would be jumping all over your head. AT: "Em. Hmn. Well, of course that helps you to... I don't really know.. what the other way would be."
Does Alexa wonder if the lyrics are about her? AT: "Oh there's none of that. Yeah, no, there's no looking over the shoulder."
She must be curious, at least. "Maybe."
Did you ever watch Popworld? AT: [Nervous laughter] "Em! Now and again."
Did you ever see the episode where she helps Paul McCartney write a song about shoes? AT: "Ah, yeah I think so, maybe I did see that."
Well, if I was you, I'd have been thinking, "She's the one for me." AT: "Well. Yeah... maybe that would've... sealed the deal! Hmn. But maybe that wasn't when i got the ray of light. When was? Nah [buries head in hands]. I might have to go for a cigarette..."
Q can't torture him any more and joins him for a snout. Turner smokes Camels from a crumpled, sad, soft-pack and resembles a teenager again. As early song You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me says, "Never tenser/Could all go a bit Frank Spencer…”
In January 2006, when Arctic Monkeys' Number 1 album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not became the fastest-selling debut in UK history, inadvertently redefining the concept of autonomy and further imploding the decimated music industry (& wasn't their idea to be "the MySpace band", it was their fans': the Monkeys merely kick-started viral marketing by giving away demos at gigs), the 19- and 20-year-old Monkeys were terrible at fame. They weren't so much insurrectionary teenage upstarts as teenage innocents culturally traumatised by the peak-era fame democracy.
To their generation (born in the mid-'80s) fame was now synonymous with some-twat-off-the-telly a world of foaming tabloid hysteria where renown and celebrity meant, in fact, you were talentless. Hence their interview diffidence and receiving awards via videos dressed up as the Wizard OfOz and the Village People. Which only, ironically, made them even more celebrated and famous. (“That were a product of us just trying to hold onto the reins," thinks Turner today. "Being uncooperative.")
Q meets The Other Three one morning at 11am, in the well-appointed, empty bar of the Bethnal Green, Bast London hotel they're staying in (all three live in Sheffield, with their girlfriends, in their own homes). First to arrive is the industrious, sensible and cheerful Helders, crunching into a hangover-curing green apple. He has recovered from last year's boxing accident at the gym, which left his broken arm requiring a fitted plate. Now impressively purple-scarred, the break felt "interesting" and the doctor couldn't resist the one-armed drummer jest: "D'you like Def Leppard?"
Currently enjoying an enduring bromance with Diddy, he still doesn't feel famous, "it just doesn't feel that real, there's no paparazzi waiting for me to trip up." He and Turner, during the four-month rehearsals last year, became an accomplished roast dinner cooking duo for the band. "I reckon we could have us our own cookbook," he beams. "Pictures of us stirring, with a whisk."
O'Malley, an agreeable, twinkly-eyed 25-year-old with a strikingly deep voice and a winningly huge smile, is still coyly embarrassed by the interview process. A replacement for the departed original bass player Andy Nicholson in May 2006, he went from Asda shelf-filler to Glastonbury headliner in 13 months and still finds the Monkeys "a massive adventure". His life in Sheffield is profoundly normal – he's delighted that his new home since last October has an open-hearth fireplace: "Me parents had electric bars." He has also discovered cooking. “I’m just a pretty shit-hot housewife, most of the time," he smiles. "I cook stews, fish combinations, curries, chillies. I made a beef pho noodle soup the other day, Vietnamese, I surprised meself, had some mates round for that."
Recently, at his dad's 50th birthday bash, the party band, made up of family and friends, insisted he join them onstage "for ...The Dancefloor. So I were up there [mimes playing bass, all sheepish] and it were the wrong pitch, they didn't know the words or 'owt, going, Makin eyes... er..." He has no extra-curricular musical ambitions. "I'm happy just playing bass," he smiles. "I've never had the skill of doing songs meself. It'd be shit!"
Cook, 25, is still spectacularly embarrassed by the interview process. He perches upright, with a fixed nervous smile, newly shorn of the beard and ponytail he sported in LA: "Rockin' a pone, yeah, because I could get away with it." With his classic preppy haircut and dapper green military coat (from London's swish department store, Liberty), he looks like a handsome '40s film star. (Turner deems Cook "the band heartbreaker" and had a word with him post-LA: "I said to him, Come on, mate, you've got to get that beard shaved off. Get the girls back into us. Shift some posters.")
His life in Sheffield is also profoundly normal. He still plays Sunday League football with his local pub team, The Pack Horse FC (position, left back), remains in his long-term relationship with page-three-model-turned-make-up-artist Katie Downes and "potters about" at home, refusing to describe said home, "cos I'll get burgled".
A tiler by trade, he always vowed, should the Monkeys sign a deal, that he'd throw his trowel in a Sheffield river on his last day of work. "I never did fling me trowel," he confirms. "Probably still in me shed." He's never considered what his band represents to his generation. "I'd go insane thinking about it, I'm pretty good at not thinking about it… Oh God. I'm terrible at this!"
Back in the Strongroom Bar, Alex Turner is cloudily describing his everyday life. "I just keep meself to meself," he confounds. He mostly stays indoors and his perfect night in with Alexa is "watching loads of Sopranos. And doing roast dinners".
No longer spindle-limbed, he attends a gym and has handsomely well-defined arms – "You have to look after yourself."
Suddenly, Crying Lightning from Humbug rumbles over the bar stereo. "Wow. How about that? I was quite happy the other morning cos Brick By Brick were on the round-up goals on Soccer AM. It's still exciting when that happens. It was like Brick By Brick is real."
He spends his days writing music, "listening to records", and recommends Blues Run The Game by doomed '60s minstrel Jackson C Frank ("who's that lass?... Laura Marling, she did a cover recently), a simple, acoustic, deep and regretful stunner about missing someone on the road.
Lyrically, he cites as an example of greatness the Nick Cave B-side Little Empty Boat [from ‘97 single Into My Arms ], a comically sinister paean to a sexual power struggle: "Your knowledge is impressive and your argument is good/But I am the resurrection babe and you're standing on my foot."
"I need a hobby," he suddenly decides. "I'd like to learn another language." Since his mum is a German teacher (his dad teaches music), surely he can speak some German? "I know how to ask somebody if they've had fun at Christmas." Go on, then. "Nah!"
Where Turner's creative gifts stem from remains a contemporary rock'n'roll mystery; he became a fledgling songwriter at 16, after the gift of a guitar at Christmas from his parents. An only child, did his folks, perhaps, foresee artistic greatness? "I doubt it!" he balks. "Cos I didn't. I wasn't... a show kid." Like the others, he doesn't analyse the past, or the future.
"You can't constantly be thinking about what's happened," he reasons, "it's just about getting on with it." The elaborate pinky ring he now constantly wears, however, a silver, gold and ruby metal-goth corker featuring the words DEATH RAMPS is a permanent reminder of he and his best friends’ past. The Death Ramps is not only a Monkeys pseudonym and B-side to Teddy Picker, but a place they used to ride their bikes in Sheffield as kids.
"Up in the woods near where we lived," he nods. "Just little hills. But when you're eight years old they're death ramps." The ring was custom made by a friend of his, who runs top-end rock'n'roll jewellery emporium The Great Frog near London's Carnaby Street. Ask Turner why he thinks the chase between his writing and speaking eloquence is quite so mesmerisingly vast and he attempts a theory.
"Well, writing isn't the same as speaking," he muses. "Not for me. I seem to struggle more and more with... conversation. Talking onstage... I can't do it any more. Hmn. I'll have to work on that."
The ever-helpful Helders has a better theory.
"Since he's been writing songs," he ponders, “It seems like he’s always thinking about that. So even when he’s talking to you now, he’s thinking about the next thing that rhymes with a word. Even when he’s driving. We joke he’s a bad driver, his focus is never 100 per cent on what he’s doing. Which is good for us cos it means he’s got another 12 songs up his sleeve. I think music must be the easiest way for him to be concise and get everything out. Otherwise his head would explode.”
The Shoreditch.com photo studios, 18 March. Alex Turner, today, is more ethereally distracted than ever, transfixed by the studio iPod, playing Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, a version of I’d Rather Go Blind. Occasionally, he’ll completely lose his conversational thread, “Um. I’ve dropped a stitch.”
The first to arrive for Q’s photoshoot, he greets his incoming bandmates with enormous hugs (and also hugs them goodbye). Today, Q feels it’s pointless poking its pickaxe of serious enquiry further into Turner’s vacuum-packed soul and wonders if he’ll play, instead, a daft game. It’s called Popworld Questions, as first posed by someone he knows rather well.
“Oh, OK. Let’s do it,” he blinks, now perched in an empty dressing room. He then vigorously shakes his head, “Um…I’ve gotta snap back into it.”
Here, then, are some genuine “Alexa Chung on Popworld” questions (2006-2007), as originally posed to Matt Willis, Amy Winehouse, Robbie Williams, Pussycat Dolls, Kaiser Chiefs and Diddy.
Why do indie bands wear such tight jeans? AT: “Um. I supposed they do. They haven’t always. When we first were playing I was definitely in flares. You need to be quite tall to get the full effect, though. So, that's why this indie band wears such tight jeans, cos we've not got the legs for flares."
What makes you tick in the sexy department? AT: "Wow. Pass. What do I find most attractive in a woman? Something in the head? That's definitely a requirement. Well... Hmn. I'm struggling."
Tell us about all the lovely groupies. AT: "No!"
If dogs had human hands instead of paws, would you consider trying to teach them to play the piano? AT: "Absolutely. I'd teach Hey Jude."
How many plums d'you think you can comfortably fit in one hand? AT: "They're not very big. [Holds small, pale, girly hand up for inspection] It's a shame. Probably three. Diddy only managed two? Maybe not then. I can carry a lot of glasses at once, though. If they're small ones I can do four."
Are you cool? AT: "Not as much as I'd like to be. There's this clip where Clint Eastwood is on a talkshow and he gets asked, Everybody thinks of you as defining cool, what d'you think about that? And he gets his cigs out, takes one out, flicks it into his mouth, lights it and says, I have no idea what you're talking about."
Here, Turner locates his Camels soft-pack and attempts to do a Clint Eastwood. He flicks one upwards towards his mouth. And misses. Flicks another. And misses. "Third time lucky?" He misses. "I'll get it the next time." And succeeds. "Hey. Fourth time. Don't put that in! So there you go. I'm four steps away from where I wanna be."
Thank you very much for joining me here on Popworld, here's my clammy hand again. There it is, let it slip, hmmn. You can let go now. AT: "OK! Were you a Popworld fan, then? It was funny. Cool. What were we talking about, before?"
Blimey, Alex. What must you be like when you're completely stoned out of your head? AT: "Stoned? What d'you mean, cos I seem like that anyway? Yeah. A lot of people... tell me I'm a bit... dreamy. But I like the idea of that. Of being somewhere else."
Two days earlier, Turner had contemplated what he wanted from all this, in the end. Many seconds later he gave his deceptively ambitious answer.
"I just wanna write better songs," he decided. "And better lyrics. I just definitely wanna be good at it. Hmn. Yeah.”

RUFUS BLACK: AKA Matt Helders, on his ongoing bromance with Diddy
Matt Helders has known preposterous rap titan Diddy since they met in Miami in 2008. “He goes, Arctic Monkeys! Then he said summat about a B-side and I was like, He's not lying! I just thought, This is funny, I'm gonna go with this for a while." Last October Diddy texted Helders, suggesting he play drums with his Diddy Dirty Money band on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross, to give his own drummer a day off. “I were bowling with me girifriend at the time. In Sheffield, on a Sunday." On the day of recording, says Helder, "We had a musical director. That were one of the maddest times of my life. Next day Diddy said, Why don't you just stay? Come along with me. So I went everywhere with him." Diddy had "a convoy of cars" and made sure Helders was always in his. "He'd stop his car and go, Where's Matt? You're coming with me! So I'd get in his car. Just me, him, his security, driver." Diddy, by now, had given him a pseudonym - Rufus Black. "He kept saying, I don't wanna fuck up your image. And I'm, I don't think it's gonna do me any harm!" He stayed in Diddy's spectacularly expensive hotel. Some weeks later, Helders almost returned to the Dirty Money drumstool for a gig in Glasgow. "But we were rehearsing in London. I were like, I might come, how are you getting there? And he were like, Jet. Jump on t’jet with me. But I had to stay in Bethnal Green instead.”

content warnings: f! reader, drug mentions, drinking, emetophobia, bisexuality (homophobes and biphobes begone I will block u so fast)
word count: 3.8k
I didn’t want to be in Italy this summer.
That makes me sound ungrateful or something, but it’s the truth. Three months ago, I had planned to stay in Brooklyn with Claire all summer long. Hosting dinner parties, eating greasy breakfast sandwiches, dancing to old $1 records in our cramped apartment, picnicking in Prospect Park, and being totally, delusionally in love.
That was before things went south, she stopped trying and left me with more rent than I could possibly pay in the city. When Christina had first mentioned that a group of her friends was headed to Italy for the summer, I’d dismissed the possibility of going with them. Not only did I dread cohabitating with her wealthy, influencer friends who seemed to deal only in clout, I thought I’d be otherwise engaged. Weeks later, I’d gone back to her groveling, asking if I could sleep on the pull-out couch in Nina’s family villa for the summer. Luckily, the sofa was still available.
Now I sit at a wrought iron table – lease broken and all of my belongings sold to wealthy Manhattanites – in the warm yellow light of the Lombard sunset. Around me are chatty, outgoing girls, each more beautiful than the last. They gab about clubs and brands and boys. In the sea of Botox and iPhones, I cling to Christina like a life buoy. I push my tortellini around my plate to make it look like I have an interest in food, but I really don’t. I’m jet-lagged and uncomfortable. And even if that wasn’t the case, I’ve barely eaten since the breakup, relying on oat lattes and dirty water dogs to keep me alive.
“Try the pasta,” Christina jabs, “trust me, you’ll have a lot more fun this summer if you lean in.” I break the shell open with my fork revealing succulent ricotta curds and bright green spinach. The filing swims in a sauce of brown butter and fragrant tarragon but doesn’t affect me as it should. Nothing does anymore. The group’s conversation interrupts my train of thought.
“They’ve come every summer since the nineties, same as us,” says Nina, smirking at the girl to her left. “Hottest little accents you’ve ever heard, I’ll tell you that much.”
“Who is she talking about?” I whisper to Christina.
“The boys in the other house,” she says, “the one you see on your way up here.” Nina’s family’s home is at a higher altitude than the rest of the city, necessitating a laborious hike to the bottom to actually do anything while in town. I’m sure that they’d been sold on the privacy of the location, but its impracticality left me wanting. The only other villa nearby sat at the base of the lush green hills before the road disappeared into winding dirt.
Another girl chimes in, “I saw them last year at a dinner in the city. They’re cute, too,” she coos.
“I kissed George the summer I turned fifteen,” brags Nina and the whole table breaks into oohs and aahs. I usually have a shut-up-unless-spoken-to policy at group dinners, but I know Christitna is right. If I don’t lean in then the credit card debt I’d amassed to buy my plane ticket and the back problems I'm sure to contract from sleeping on a pull-out couch for a whole summer will have been for naught. Think of it as an acting exercise, I tell myself, a performance of the girl who is totally not hung up on her ex and excited for a fun summer with her friends.
“I’m sorry,” I interrupt, “who are these guys?”
“They’re in a band,” says Nina.
“Like a real one?” I ask. Years of living in New York have taught me that all bands are not, in fact, real ones. Nina laughs.
“You’re funny,” she muses, “yes, a real one. They’re like famous. We’ll go over eventually, they throw the best parties you can find around here. Get real drugs, too. Not just liters upon liters of Aperol, not that I mind that either.”
With my question sufficiently answered, I return quietly to my pasta, cutting each shell into impossibly smaller pieces until it’s rabbit food that will glide down my throat and do the hard job of nourishing me without any work on my part.
–
After dinner, I tuck into the pull-out couch in the villa’s spacious living room. The lack of A/C and the balmy summer air make it impossible to enjoy the luxurious wool blankets Nina’s family no doubt splurged on. I allow myself to eavesdrop on the elated sounds coming from upstairs: women confiding in each other, commiserating about their troubles, and shrieking excitedly at each other's successes.
I first try to doze off at 10:15, hoping that an early night will be exactly what I need and I’ll wake up refreshed and on Italian time. After an hour of staring at the popcorn ceilings and trying to suppress my crippling fear of missing out, I’ve tired my mind out enough to begin slipping toward sleep. I have fewer and fewer thoughts until I’m jolted by a hip-hop bassline. It resonates through the trundle bed and rebounds off my ribs, cozying itself into my heart. As I begin to come to, I recognize the chords of a house track that used to play at the girl bar Claire and I frequented in Green Point. The melody is warm and familiar and undeniably annoying. How loud must the music be for it to affect me so acutely even as I’m a few kilometers away from them?
I decide I’m pissed – and yes I decided. I’m freshly single, broke, jet-lagged, and fucking pissed at those entitled rich assholes. I slide my sandals on and head out down the hill in my sleep clothes.
-
I step outside onto the winding dirt road that leads the way to the boys’ home. The night is dark, lit by stars much brighter than I’m used to seeing in Brooklyn. I tilt my head back to look at them, trying to identify the big dipper. After a few seconds, I’m dizzy. I shake myself and trudge ahead, almost lulled into submission by the constant chirping of cicadas and the sweet fragrance of orange blossom that wafts off the bushes.
With each step I take towards the boys’ villa (what were their names again? Nina said one was called George), the music, electronic and fast-paced, becomes louder.
When I first knock on the faded wood door, I’m quite sure no one has heard me. I stand outside for a few minutes, contemplating whether I should knock again or cut my losses and return up the hill. I decide I may as well disrupt their party as some kind of karmic retribution for keeping me awake even as I’m exhausted from a transatlantic flight. I raise my fist and rap harshly at the door. A moment later, it flies open, revealing a curly-haired boy. Well, not boy, I decide as I inspect his features – lines decorate his forehead, and gray peeks out at me from within a ringlet that hangs over his eyes. He gives me a once over and can immediately tell I’m not here for the party.
“Can I help you?” he asks, annoyed. His accent lilts and falls over the words. All of a sudden, I feel insecure in my braless and plaid pajama-clad state. He’s beautiful – and exasperated by me. I double down on my own annoyance.
“Would you mind turning the music down?” I ask, still cordial, “I’m staying at the house up the way and I can’t get to sleep.”
The guy in front of me purses his lips and considers me for a moment. I feel itchy and uncomfortable. He’s looking at me like he can see through my clothes, to my soft hips and painted toes and peaked nipples.
“Let me show you around, gorgeous,” he smiles, “then maybe you won’t mind so much.” He grabs my wrist and yanks me into the party. A warmth covers me as I cross the threshold into the villa. The inside of the home smells like college: cheap weed, sweet sticky mixers, and sweat. My sandals stick slightly to the floor, reminding me that I really shouldn’t be here right now. Like the alcohol that’s been spilled on the ground is some great cosmic interference to convince me to go home and get the rest I ought to.
Suddenly, a big hand falls on the shoulder of the boy who’s pulling me by my limbs.
“Matty!” says the man. I can make out enough to see that he’s tall and devastatingly handsome.
“George!” the boy – Matty, I remind myself – drops my hand and fully embraces the bigger guy. “Was just showing…” he nods at me to introduce myself.
“Y/n.”
“Around,” Matty finishes. George gives me a once over.
“Did she just roll out of bed? Or get released from prison?”
“Y/n came to ask us to keep the noise down,” Matty declares with fake sincerity, “Not a partier, are ya love?”
“Under the right circumstances, I can be,” I retort. Matty and George’s eyebrows raise in amusement, faces breaking out in smiles. That sounded much more cunning in my head. Now I feel like a toy they’re playing with, winding me up to see what noises I make. It feels infantilizing. I’m uncomfortable, crawling in my skin; pride battered and desperate to go home as soon as it doesn’t look like I’m running away from a fight of my own picking. “I’d better be going actually,” I assert.
Matty puckers his bottom lip in an exaggerated pout. “I’ll show you out, princess.” It’s a sweet nickname but it tastes bitter out of his mouth. He seems to twist everything good and make it unbearable. I resent him for it. I trudge in front of Matty towards the door with steadfast focus. As I cross the threshold, I turn to meet his gaze.
“Thanks for nothing,” I say calmly. Matty breaks into a devilishly smug grin. His eyebrows tilt a little and his lips reveal a few crooked teeth at the bottom of his mouth.
“My pleasure, darlin’,” he says. I scoff and turn on my heels, leaving Matty in the dust.
–
The scent of freshly chopped garlic fills the kitchen as I stand in an assembly line of young women with cutting boards and chefs knives, each diligently chopping an ingredient for the bruschetta.
In front of me is a bunch of basil, perfectly fresh and green. I gently remove the leaves from the stem and create a pile in the middle of my board. It reminds me of when I would be tasked with raking the leaves as a kid. Too distracted by my childish whims, I would create more work for myself by piling the leaves on top of each other and taking a grandiose dive into them before scooping them up into a trash bag and discarding them. Each leaf was like a piece of confetti, a celebration of the season and of youth. Now I do these things to prove to myself that I’m young and that I can still conjure up that imaginative, playful nature if I try hard enough.
As I rock my knife back and forth over the soft leaves, Christina asks me where I was the night before.
“I came out around eleven to invite you upstairs, but I couldn’t find you,” she says.
Embarrassed, I train my eyes to the task at hand. This is not the group to look like a tattle-tale in front of. Actually, there’s very few groups in which that would fly. My penchant for playing God and divvying out karmic consequences to everyone whose path I cross is a part of my nature I’m not particularly fond of. I’m not keen to share it, especially around people who are still making up their minds about me. Despite my steadfast beliefs and borderline-outlandish behaviors, I maintain a fervent desire to be liked. It’s pathetic.
“I stepped out for some air,” I murmur.
“Really?” she nudges, “Because I didn’t see you on the porch.”
I turn my basil bunch 90 degrees in a flourish, beginning to chop it lengthwise.
“Fine, I couldn’t sleep because of the music,” I spit.
“And…” Christina has always been too good at getting me to reveal my true feelings. She goads me torturously until it’s easier to say what I’m thinking than to conceal it.
“And I went to ask them to turn the music down,” I finish, “There, are you happy?”
“Very,” she smiles.
I pick up the chopped basil, letting the pieces float through my fingers and deciding I need to chop them smaller, still. I whack at the pile haphazardly, ruining the lovely squares I meticulously crafted earlier.
“They didn’t turn it down, if you were wondering,” I pant, “Pricks.” Christina chuckles to herself.
“No one ever does.”
–
The music of the club is omnipresent as I enter hand in hand with Christina. On my feet are heels too high to be comfortable, but the perfect lift to accentuate my calves. As soon as I cross the threshold, I drag Christina to the bartender, ordering two negronis. We idle by the bar for a moment and I take in my surroundings, savoring the bitter aftertaste of my drink and the waltz of the lights that flicker and cover the dancefloor with reverie. I listen to the synths and flourishes of the melody that envelop my senses. I hadn’t expected to like the music, but the DJ is spinning disco and it just feels right: the cold Italian aperitif, the funky basslines, and the tranquil nighttime air. I almost wish I’d left my phone at home. Nights like these aren’t compatible with phones anyway. The atmosphere feels like a relic of a bygone era, full of free love and intoxication.
Nina and a friend of hers find Christina and me at the bar and run up to us with inebriated bravado. “You guys made it!” she squeals. Little does she know we were pre-gaming at the villa in anticipation of this exact moment. I couldn’t handle Nina while sober tonight, that much I was absolutely sure of. It also didn’t help that I was alone – for the first time in several years – in a romantic foreign country without the girl whom I still loved. As unhealthy as it was, alcohol made that reality hurt a bit less. Nina grabs my hands and leads Christina and me away from the bar.
“I need to introduce you to the DJs!” Nina exclaims. I glance at Christina to communicate that no, I’m not particularly enthused at the prospect of meeting some Eurotrash guy whose head is shaved and whose torso is covered in Gucci logos. She returns the glance, silently begging me to behave. I relent.
Nina leads us around the side of the floor to some kind of dark stairwell. Rationally, I should be scared of being kidnapped but my drunken stupor inspires more carelessness than I would usually indulge in. I watch the sway of Christina’s hips and follow her like a lost puppy. Finally, we reach the top and the DJ deck is revealed. It’s shadowy and hazy. To the left is a corner booth with a straight couple making out in a way that really ought to be illegal in public. Past the lookout, laser lights flicker and sweep across the dancefloor, catching on the artificial fog and filling the air with psychedelic color. My eyes fall on the backs of two figures at the DJ booth, smoke rising above their heads. I can make out that one has headphones on and is faffing with the turntable while the other has their hands in the air and the small, flickering glow of a lit cigarette dancing around their figure. I’m dragged towards them by Nina who throws an arm around each of their necks in greeting. As soon as the one with the cig turns around, I catch his eyes.
It’s Matty. Selfish, arrogant Matty. I nod my head and flatten my mouth in a kind of recognition. The room is spinning from the alcohol and my skin is buzzing with discomfort. The bass of the music resonates in my ribs, teaching my heart how to beat. My mouth tastes salty and my knees feel weak.
I’m running to the corner where I can see a bin. Tears prick at my eyes and my hair sticks to my sweaty forehead as I swiftly empty the contents of my stomach into the small trash can. I kneel on the rough carpet and brace myself on either side of the bin with my hands. Between heaves, I lift my head to shake my hair off the back of my neck. The cool air feels grounding, but I’m soon back with my head in the can. I feel a hand on the back of my head, wrangling my frizzy hair off of my shoulders. I gasp, looking back for the sisterly comfort of Christina’s bottomless, cerulean eyes. Instead, I find a pair of brown, honey-flecked irises: Matty’s. I’m reeling too severely to be upset or confused; I’m just grateful when he uses his free hand to sweep my damp bangs out of my face and nods at me.
“Go on,” he encourages, “better out than in.”
I bury my head in the bucket again.
“Atta girl,” Matty coos in my ear. I can almost notice his hand rubbing circles on my back. Even when I’m quite sure I’m finished, I keep my head down for a moment savoring the last few seconds that I don’t have to look Matty in the eyes. Curse him for helping me. I wouldn’t know how to interact with him under normal circumstances, much less when he’s been nice to me – and watched me unceremoniously blow chunks into a bin.
“You feel better?” he asks. I lift my head tentatively, still scared another wave of nausea will hit me.
“I think so, yeah,” I mumble. Matty searches my eyes for any warning sign that I’m still sick.
“Have you got a hair tie?” I instinctually fish in my jeans pocket for one, handing it to him. Slowly, he corrals my locks into a ponytail and secures it, fingers grazing the tops of my ears and making me shiver. I sit back against the wall with my legs splayed out in front of me, knees visibly carpet burnt from my previous position. Matty flops down beside me. He reaches out to touch the red, irritated skin.
“You don’t need a doctor or something, do you?” he asks.
“I’m fine,” I hiss when he applies a little pressure to my knee and shake his hands off me, “Why are you being nice to me?”
“When have I not been nice?”
“You wouldn’t turn the music down the other night,” I state. He smiles at me, eyes scrunching up until his pupils are totally obscured.
“No one ever turns the music down,” he says, like it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “Plus,” he adds, “I thought you were a buzzkill. Now I can see that’s not the case, sweetheart.”
“I can usually handle my drink better than this,” I protest, “And I’m also usually not a buzzkill.”
“I guess I don’t know anything about you, then,” he acquiesces, thinking for a moment, “Do you want to start over?”
“Sure, I’d like that,” I nod, smiling tipsily.
“So what’s caused you to be sick tonight?” Matty asks, leaning his head back against the wall. His hair is curled up in perfect ringlets and his skin glows golden even in the dim club light. He looks at me carefully, like his stare could hurt me. It could, I suppose.
“Alcohol?” I say it like that should be obvious. His face wrinkles up again in a laugh I can vaguely identify as something that’s my fault. He looks pretty. I realize I want to make him do it again and again forever. I want to see the crinkles that grow at the sides of his eyes and the curl of his upper lip that reveals his boyishly crooked teeth.
“I figured as much. Anything in particular that drove you to drink?” I frown for a second, trying to remember.
“My ex,” I say quietly.
“What’d he do?”
“Nothing,” I shake my head, “that’s the problem. She didn’t do anything.”
“When was that?”
“Two months ago?” My god, it’s already been two months.
“I’m sorry,” he murmurs, “that’s still fresh.” I shrug.
“It’s alright I guess. You just feel a little betrayed when someone stops trying. I thought that was the whole point of…” I trail off, gesticulating aimlessly with my hands, “love or whatever. To keep trying.”
“I get it,” he utters.
“People stop trying with rockstars, too?” I tease. He smiles.
“How did you know that I’m a musician?”
“Well, first of all, I said rockstar–”
“Which I chose to ignore because it was sarcastic.” I roll my eyes.
“And second of all, the girls I’m staying with told me,” I finish. He nods in understanding.
“Well yeah,” he sighs pensively, “people stop trying with everybody. Even rockstars. If I’ve learnt anything in my life, it’s that giving up usually has more to do with them than it does with you.”
“You’re probably right, but that doesn’t make it hurt any less,” I argue.
“Nothing does. You just have to let it hurt for a while.”
We’re both quiet for a second. I catch a couple of bars of an Earth, Wind, and Fire song and hum along, content with the silence. I let my head fall onto Matty’s shoulder and he immediately turns his head to look at me.
“Oh fuck, sorry. Is this okay?” I ask, hand flying to my mouth “I know I just puked.”
“It’s okay,” he says, “I just didn’t think you would want to.”
“I want to,” I kiss his shoulder through the cotton of his white button-up shirt. He watches me the whole time as though he can’t quite compute what’s happening. Then he snaps back to his regular confident state.
“Let me know if you ever want to deal with your girlf– ex without drinking your feelings away…” he trails off, mouth meeting the crown of my head, “I’d love to show you around here sometime.”
“Okay,” I mumble, the alcohol, tiredness, and emotions beginning to get the better of me and coax me toward sleep.
“Okay?”
“Yeah, I’d like that.” Matty grabs my hand from my lap and wraps it in his two larger ones, caressing my thumb and humming into my ear.

Guide to Phantom Blot stories (Part 2)
On this part, it's gonna be more of my personal take on picking these stories, and harder to find the book and translations (unless you've learned a european language, it would be more easy.) , but here's some of my recommendations :
(If there's an asterisk (*) it does mean the story was translated in english.)
Old italian stories
Generally in these stories, phantom blot is described as a criminal boss. It's generally a bit gritty. (since they from a old age of course.)
Topolino e la villa disabitata
Topolino e i piselli sabotatori
Topolino maestro investigatore
Topolino e l'operazione caos
Modern italian stories
Even they less dark and bring more mystery instead, some has comedy stories, and even phantom blot become more of a mad scientist, and despite this, they are always interesting to watch.
La lunga notte del commissario Manetta *
Topolino e il prototipo avveniristico
Topolino e l'astroplastica proteofantastica
Topolino e la città dell'ingiustizia
Manetta in: Sosta pericolosa
Macchia Nera e il buon vicinato
Black out a Topolinia
Topolino e i Goof Viewer
Macchia Nera in: Semplice, pulito, diretto
Macchia Nera e l'inarrestabile ombra
Italian series
Ser Topolino e la cavalcata dei cavalieri inesistenti
Goofy Reporter (Dieci piccoli caimani, Il fiuto di Pluto, and especially Estate a Green Pond who this one is my special favorite for me. ) Also some of the german issues was available online via Amazon/Kindle. (issue 9 to 11)
Topolino e la rapina del millennio
Ducktopia
Gli evaporati
Wizard of mickey II : The Dark Age *
Cronache dal Pianeta T
Disney Parodies
Topolino corriere dello Zar
I promessi topi
Topokolossal
La vera storia di Novecento
Dracula *
Topo maltese
Topolinix e lo scambio di Galli
19,999 leghe sotto i mari
Danemark stories
There's actually enough okay good stories by Egmont, and even it's not as the height as the italians ones, there's some gems.
På jagt efter Sorte Slyngel (what if Paul Murry Blot was powerful.)
Den anden verden (Blotman) *
Gudernes Kraft *
Slyngel på spil
Afbrudte signaler *
Slyngelstreger
TV-piraten
Overraskelsesfesten
Gys på godset *
SOS
Afsporet *
Venskab på prøve *
I highlight also the Mickey mystery series, they made very good tense mystery stories about phantom blot. Feel free to check these ones, one day.
The University Enigma
Culture Shock
Horror in the Wax Museum
The Lost City Of Duckburg
Others
The Big Fall and A Phantom Blot Bedtime Story. *

Sleepover Saturday q: If you were to tell a tourist what they should do in 3 days to get the Best LA Experience, what would you recommend? This includes occult sites/stores, really any place you'd recommend
oooooh okay! I'm assuming you're starting in Hollywood, because that's where I live, so here we go!
DAY 1: get thee to the Academy Museum. it is exquisite and it will make you feel some type of way about movies but it probably won't take all day so go ahead and wander about LACMA and the La Brea Tar Pits for the rest of the afternoon. either pay to go to into the exhibits at LACMA or stick to the free stuff (Urban Light and the tar pits); they're all in the same park on the same block so be sure to take your time and enjoy the green space and beautiful sunshine. head to the permanent farmers' market at the Grove for dinner, and make sure you go up to the top floor of the parking garage to see the best views this side of the San Gabriel mountains. if you have time, go to the Quentin Tarantino-owned New Beverly Cinema to catch a movie on 35mm film before heading back to Hollywood to see the Times Square of the west coast: the Walk of Fame lit up for the night.
DAY 2: driving all over god's beautiful forsaken creation is a time-honored LA tradition, so today you are gonna take the interstate 10 out to the Pacific Coast Highway and drive all the way up along the coast. stop wherever you want. the beauty of SoCal beaches is that you can just pull over on the side of the road and hop out of the car onto the sand and into the ocean! it's easy! it's free! it's what god intended! then once your feet have gotten wet, keep going up to the Self-Realization Fellowship Center, aka the lake shrine, and sit for an hour or so in meditation by the lake. then keep going up the PCH past the Getty Villa to route 27, and take that all the way through Topanga. the canyon views are sublime. (at least until you get back to the 101.) oh and for food, make sure you stop at whatever mom & pop place catches your fancy along the way. I had a really good tuna burger at Malibu Fresh Fish Market patio cafe, but as a general rule whatever looks good probably is.
DAY 3: get an early start and drive west down the Sunset Strip. Sunset is easily one of the very best streets in the city because if you stay on it long enough you get to experience the best of what Hollywood has to offer, from the strip to Bel Air to the Pacific Ocean if you drive far enough, but today we're going to turn onto Benedict Canyon in Beverly Hills to go up to Mulholland Drive. YES it is every bit as beautiful as the movies make it seem, however it is a WHOLE LOT more twisting and winding so I really would not recommend going more than 25mph. you're gonna take Mulholland back east toward the 101, and then head for Burbank, my favorite shopping destination bar none. in one neighborhood you have Besame Cosmetics' flagship store, The Crooked Path occult shop, the Mystic Museum horror boutique with rotating exhibits, and piles of stores like Slone Vintage and the year-round Rob Zombie-owned Halloween Town. further downtown (still in Burbank) there's Unique Vintage's only brick-and-mortar store, Story tavern (great burgers), and Artelice patisserie, where they always make the macarons fresh and if you get there late enough in the day, they'll give you some free ones with your pastry.
DAY 4 (BONUS DAY): if you still have time after all that, go take a morning hike in Runyon Canyon and then head for a studio tour at Warner Brothers. eat lunch beforehand at the Smoke House (open since 1946) right across the way, and eat dinner afterward in Hollywood at Musso & Frank's (open since 1929). grab some cocktails at the Roosevelt Hotel or Chateau Marmont afterward if you feel like it. idk I'm not the boss of you.
#los angeles#i could do a whole week's worth of these i love los angeles so much it's not even funny#this city has my whole heart and it makes me sad when people are mean to it#especially people who live here??? like just LEAVE please there's not enough parking as it is#luxephire#sleepover saturday#questions queries quandaries

The Top Current Trends in Las Vegas Real Estate
Las Vegas, Nevada is known for its world-renowned entertainment, casinos, and hospitality industries. However, in recent years, the city has also become an attractive real estate market due to its growing economy and diverse population. In this post, we’ll explore the top current trends in Las Vegas real estate that anyone looking to invest or buy a property in the area should know.
Increased demand for single-family homes
The pandemic has prompted buyers to seek larger and more comfortable living spaces, and Las Vegas is no exception. Single-family homes have seen a spike in demand, as people look for privacy, home offices, and outdoor amenities. According to the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors (GLVAR), single-family home sales rose by 8.7% in 2020, with an average sales price of $354,000. As a result, these properties are now selling much faster, and buyers may find themselves in bidding wars.
Booming luxury market
The luxury real estate market in Las Vegas has seen significant growth in recent years, with high-end buyers seeking luxury villas, penthouses, and homes in exclusive areas. According to the GLVAR, luxury home sales increased by 46.8% in 2020, with the average sales price reaching $1,350,000. Luxury buyers are looking for modern amenities, exclusive locations, and personalized services, combining the comfort of home with upscale experiences.
Growth in commercial real estate
Las Vegas has always had a strong commercial real estate market due to its tourism and hospitality industries, but new industries like tech and healthcare have been driving demand as well. According to CBRE, office vacancy rates in Vegas have dropped for the fourth consecutive quarter in 2021, with tech and financial firms accounting for the majority of leasing activity. Additionally, the city is investing heavily in the healthcare industry, with new hospitals and medical facilities opening across the city.
Increasing interest in short-term rentals
Las Vegas is a popular destination for tourism, and as a result, short-term rentals like Airbnb have gained popularity. Homeowners can earn significant income by renting out their properties for a few days or weeks, especially during peak travel seasons. However, investors should be aware of the city’s strict regulations on short-term rentals, including fees and permits required for operating a rental property.
The growing interest in sustainable real estate
Las Vegas is becoming a leader in sustainable development and green real estate, with developers and homeowners embracing energy-efficient technologies and environmentally-friendly design. For example, the city’s new Circa Resort & Casino is one of the few LEED Gold-certified hotels in the world, with sustainable features like solar panels, rainwater collection, and energy-efficient lighting. Additionally, more homeowners are opting for green building materials, solar panels, and energy-saving appliances when building or renovating their homes.
Virtual real estate tours
The pandemic has changed the way the real estate industry operates, with virtual tours and remote viewings becoming a necessity. Las Vegas real estate agents and developers have embraced technology, offering virtual tours, drone footage, and 3D renderings of properties. Many buyers are now able to view properties from the comfort of their own homes, making the buying process more efficient and convenient.
The rise of remote work
The pandemic has also accelerated the trend of remote work, with many companies allowing employees to work from home permanently. As a result, more people are looking to move away from expensive cities like New York and San Francisco, and Las Vegas is an attractive option. The city offers a lower cost of living, a warmer climate, and an abundance of outdoor activities, making it an ideal place for remote workers to call home.
In the end, the Las Vegas real estate market has been evolving quickly in recent years, with new trends emerging that offer opportunities for buyers, sellers, and investors. Whether you’re looking for a single-family home or a luxury condo, the city’s real estate market is diverse and growing. Additionally, Las Vegas’s unique mix of industries, sustainability initiatives, and remote work opportunities make it an attractive location for anyone looking to invest in property or relocate to a thriving city.

I'm a sucker for angst, so I'mma go the mid-vivisection route
Compartmentalizing had always been an effective way of dealing with emotions, especially when he knew they were going to get in his way. He could deal with the shock and grief over his newly discovered child later. He had to save him first.
The trip from his office in the Upper East Side to Wayne Manor in Bristol had never taken so long before. There was no traffic, and he'd hit every green light, but the trip was agonizing for him. Every second he wasted was a seconded that his son could be hurt or worse.
He didn't want to think about worse. Not again. Not ever again.
Damian was in the Cave when he got there, narrowing down the location of the video the best he could. Danny had sat against a wall below an open window, a tiny crack to the outside world visible at the very top of the screen. It didn't give much, but it was enough. If all else failed, they'd have Barbra or Tim take a look at it.
Bruce was quick to suit up and get both the Batplane and the Batmobile ready to go incase either or both was needed. Once finished, he switched out so that Damian could go suit up and ready his bike.
Through the crack in the window, there was wide area - likely a yard - visible. There was no fence to mark the edge of the property, nor were there any houses, so the house must be on the outskirts of whatever town or city it's located. In the distance, there was a sign. Because it was so far away, even zooming in and enhancing the picture didn't reveal much. He did, however, get RK, ILLINOIS and a three digit population out of it, limiting their starting location significantly.
A list of town and city names ending in 'rk' within the state, led Bruce to thirty-one possible locations: Amity Park, Aroma Park, Beach Park, Bedford Park, Calumet Park, Cissna Park, Deer Park, Elmwood Park, Evergreen Park, Forest Park, Franklin Park, Hanover Park, Highland Park, Hopkins Park, Indian Head Park, La Grange Park, Loves Park, Machesney Park, Maple Park, Mark, Merrionette Park, Oak Park, Orland Park, Palos Park, Richton Park, Round Lake Park, Schiller Park, Stone Park, Tinley Park, Villa Park, Washington Park.
With the three digit population count, he managed to narrow the list down to Amity Park, Aroma Park, Bedford Park, Cissna Park, Hopkins Park, and Mark. Still too many to check in person.
Bruce's next - it should've been the first - step was to run a screenshot of Danny's face from his video through Facial Recognition with the specifics of those six places. By then, Damian had dressed and rejoined him at the Batcomputer. They waited impatiently for results to come in.
Daniel Fenton Feb. 12, 2000 Amity Park, Illinois Mother: Maddison Fenton Father: Jack Fenton Sister: Jasmine Fenton
Bruce and Damian were quick to put on their masks and get into the Batplane, leaving the Batcomputer on and their findings open.
While Bruce flew, Damian was tasked with watching for anything via traffic and other cameras to see if Danny had left the town. Halfway through the journey, it was discovered that he was kidnapped by people wearing white and driving a white van.
How cliché.
Damian followed the van's trail, relaying to Bruce whenever they crossed city limits. Eventually, they crossed the Northern State Border and into Wisconsin. He told his Father as such.
"Why are they leaving the state?" Bruce wondered aloud. "How are they leaving the state?"
"They have government identification." Damian answered, reviewing the footage in a separate window. He froze the frome, zooming in and enhancing the picture as best he could on the tablet. "G.I.W," he read. "I'm not familiar with the name."
Bruce hummed. "The Ghost Investigation Ward."
"The what?"
"They've been a pain the JLD's asses for the past year, but the Justice League hasn't been able to find solid evidence to get them shut down."
"Should I contact the League?"
"No. We'll figure that out after we get your brother."
Damian nodded and focused back on watching where the van went.
After a few moments of silence, Bruce asked, "Why didn't you tell me?"
He let the question sit for a moment. "When an assassin is killed, they are struck from records. It is made as though they never existed. They are to be forgotten about. Danny was no exception."
Bruce hummed again. "Tell me about him?"
It was a soft request, a tone of voice Damian had never heard from his Father before. Who was he to deny him?
"Danny is older than me by a few minutes. He never used unnecessary violence. He preferred the quiet and became one of the main caretakers for the gardens. He never saw eye-to-eye with Grandfather or Mother, but he only committed small acts to defy them. Other than myself, he got along with ضربة الموت the best."
"'Deathstroke'?" That was a concerning surprise.
"Yes." A beat. "As you know, League Assassins don't use names. Mother is known as شيطان; Demon. I was الصدى; Echo. Danny was الروح; Spirit."
"Oh? Why those names?"
"'الصدى' is because I am the second born. 'الروح' is because Danny nearly did not survive his birth."
"What happened?"
"I do not know. Mother never told me. I ever asked."
"I see."
The white van disappeared just outside of Maddison, Wisconsin. THe footage was nearly a week old, but it was all they had to go off of. Forwarding the footage revealed that the van had not made a reappearance since it first arrived. The flight time from Gotham, New Jersey to Maddison, Wisconsin is two hours and eighteen minutes. Bruce got there in an hour.
They landed the Batplane several miles away from the town, using the bikes they had loaded before leaving to circle the city while looking for anything that could give them a lead as to where Dany had been taken.
There were two buildings outside of the city that Batman and Robin flagged. The first was a castle registered under the name Masters, the same man who is mayor of Amity Park. The other building was a weather-worn cottage and shed directly opposite the castle.
They chose to investigate the run-down cottage first.
Inside was nothing special. It was empty and dirty. However, there was no dust and no plants overtaking the wood. Clearly people were coming and going at a consistent rate. The garage was much the same with the addition of the white van they'd been tracking.
"In and out," Batman told Robin who nodded. "Getting Danny out is priority. Knock assailants unconscious."
"What about the JL investigation into these G.I.W people?"
"I will handle it if we have time. For now, we go undetected for as long as we can."
"Yes, Father."
The only closed door inside the cottage opened up to an elevator with no cameras inside. They blocked it off from inside before going to LL1, acting to corner everyone in anticipation of them trying to flee.
Every wall, door, floor, and ceiling was white. Windows into rooms were tinted white, too. There was no one on the floor. Every room they looked into had horrible security measures (read: none at all). All but one were obviously labs, the last one being a mix between a records room and an office.
LL2 was much the same. Everything was white. Instead of labs, though, the rooms all appeared to be unused cells, aside from one room that acted as an office/records room. There was a total of seven people on this level. No one had managed to call an alarm.
LL3 is where the unfortunate party began. There were only three white rooms on this floor, not including the hallway. Two large labs on either side fitted out with cloning equipment, and an office at the end that held records of everything that happened on that floor. There was nineteen people on this floor, eight in each of the labs and the last three in the office. Like the floors above, Batman and Robin knocked out every individual they came across. Unluckily, the man they assume was in charge of the floor managed to set an alarm, dying the silent white hall and rooms red with a blaring siren.
Batman and Robin rushed to the lift, catching it before it crushed the Batarang keeping it open, and taking it down to the final floor.
LL4 met them with prepared resistance. Twenty agents pointed white and green weapons at them, though there wasn't a single gun between any of them. They were repetitive to fight, but easy to take down with a few punches.
Unlike the other three floors, this one's hallway ran on either side of the elevator instead of directly in front of it. There was only one room on this floor. Two large, white-tinted windows looked into it on either side of a white steel door. Inside looked like an ER Center. A single surgical table was bolted to the ground in the center of the room. Against the left wall was a cage, against the right was a desk and two filing cabinets. There was a light directly above the table, a lamp on the desk, and two floor lamps point at the table. There were several carts and trays with a variety of surgical and torture instruments on them. What stood out at first was that the room was covered in toxic green and blood red splotches.
Danny lay on the table, surrounded by five doctors. His entire abdomen had been cut open with a Y shaped incision and his ribs were broken to bend up, allowing access to his organs. The equipment he'd been attached to said that he was still alive, his lungs inflating and his body reacting to the doctors' touches confirmed this. One of them had been rooting around in his body, seemingly unaware of the alarm outside of the room. The hands came out of the body holding the child's liver, putting it on an empty tray.
It was horrifying.
Batman and Robin were harsher with the people on this floor, several ending up with stab wounds before they were allowed the mercy of unconsciousness. The door was unlocked, making it easy for them to enter the room. The people inside were all unprepared to fight and all five of them went down easy.
Now faced with his child, split open on a table, Bruce felt himself freezing up. He knew he had to move, to get his sone somewhere safe so that he could heal, but he couldn't move. He'd seen so much in his time; so much horror, so much death; but he hadn't evr frozen up like this before.
No. That was a lie. He'd frozen up when Jason had been killed. He frozen up when Tim had been taken and poisoned by The Joker. He'd frozen up when Barbra had been hurt so irreparably. He'd frozen up when Stephanie had 'died'. He'd frozen up when Dick had been taken by the Court of Owls. He'd frozen up when Damian had died. He'd frozen up when Cass had taken the position as head of the LoA. But he'd frozen up after that had all happened to his children, after he'd done what he could to help them, after they'd all suffered. He didn't have time to freeze up right now, but he couldn't force himself to move.
It wasn't until Robin had folded Danny's skin closed, snapping his ribs into place and preparing to stitch him up, that Batman moved.
Danny had screamed when either of them touched him, forcing his right eye open. Recognition flashed in his visible eye. "Heal-" he forced, his voice no louder than a whisper and sounding like he'd swallowed gravel. "Liv-"
Batman took a guess as to what he was trying to say. "You'll heal, right?" A nod. "You want me to put your liver back inside of you?" Danny shook his head and Batman felt relief flood him. He was not ready to stuff organs inside of his child. He picked up a curved needle and thread, ready to stitch him up. He went as fast as he could, but it still took too long.
"I've contacted the Justice League about this place, Batman," Robin came back into the room. "They'll have agents here within the hour."
"Good." He tied off the last stitch, setting the needle to the side. "We're taking him back to Gotham."
"Should we not wait for the Justice League? They have far better doctors."
Danny flinched at the mention of medical personal, pain covering his face again as he closed his eyes.
"We'll tread him in the Cave."
Robin nodded. "I'll alert Agent A-"
Danny whimpered at the name.
"I'll alert Nightwing," he corrected.
Batman hadn't looked away from Danny once. Now, though, he spoke directly to him. "I'm going to pick you up and carry you. It's going to hurt, but I have to get you safe. Is that okay."
The response he got was a small, jerky nod. "Y-yes."
"Good," Batman carefully slipped his arms under Danny's legs and back. "I'm sorry I was late." he said as he lifted him.
Danny's mouth opened in a silent scream before he buried his face the best he could into Batman's shoulder. "Not late." He reached up to grasp the fabric of his cape. "Not late."
DPxDC prompt (demon twins au)
A video from your son, the email was titled. Bruce was confused. Which of his kids would send a video to his public work email??
Bruce clicked play.
On the screen was a boy who look a lot like Damian, but most certainly wasn’t him.
“This video is for the eyes of Bruce Wayne only.
Hi Dad. I’m Danny. You likely don’t know I exist, and if you’re receiving this, I’m already dead. Well, more dead than I already was. Maybe it’s cruel of me to send you a message post-mortem, but you deserve the truth, and telling you earlier would’ve put you in danger.
This email is set to automatically send if I haven’t opened my computer for 3 days. I sometimes set it longer if I’m on vacation or expecting trouble, but I’ve mostly likely been away from home for a bit over three days if you’re receiving this.
I don’t know who killed me. Obviously. I’m recording this in advance. But it was probably either the GIW or my adoptive parents, the Fentons. I half-died at 14 and became a local ghost superhero, but they never realized I was trying to help and kept talking about tearing ghost-me apart molecule by molecule, so I bet that’s what happened. There will be nothing left of me to bury. Sorry about that!
The rest of the story is this. I was raised in an assassin cult, eventually escaping at the age of 6 when they sent me on mission and I successfully faked my death.
My biggest regret is that I escaped alone. And that’s the reason I’m reaching out to you.
You’re a civilian. If you know too much about the League of Assassins you’ll be in danger. But I need you to save my twin Damian. He’s likely still there after all these years. He never wanted to escape; he took pride in being the heir to the league. He’s probably going to be stabby; he’s an assassin after all. But it’s not his fault. Ra’s - our grandfather - brainwashed him a lot more than he brainwashed me because Damian was more susceptible to it. It’s not his fault. Please. Save him. I’m begging you. My biggest regret is leaving Damian in the league. You have a chance to save him. Please, please do it.
I wish it would’ve been safe for me to get to know you. You seem like a cool dad, from what I’ve seen of you on the news with your oldest kids. I bet you’re like that with the youngest you hide from the public too. I wish you all the best. Thank you for listening.
Your long lost almost certainly dead by now son, Danny Fenton.”
Bruce took a second to process this, then picked up his phone and dialed his youngest’s number.
“Father.”
“Damian, did you have a twin named Danny?”
“…Who told you?”
Bruce hung up and sent Damian the video. He needed a minute to process this anyway.
Damian called back a few minutes later, after watching the video.
“Father. I do not care what state he is in. We must discover exactly what happened to Danny. Even if there is only a single molecule left. We must discover the truth.”
“I couldn’t agree more, Damian.”
Dealer’s choice on whether Danny is alive. The few ideas I have for this are:
- they find him mid-vivisection and rescue him
- they find what’s left of him post-vivisection and post his core being crushed
- he’s perfectly fine and just forgot to open his computer (maybe clockwork made sure he forgot?) and now he’s panicking about the fact that his family knows about him and could be in danger. He wanted them to know he existed, not make themselves a walking target for the league by finding him and trying to bring him home!
- Jazz found the automatic email and, deciding to meddle in her brother’s life and him back to his family and maybe get a good parent for herself as a bonus, sent it early
- Technus decided to start shit and sent it while haunting Danny’s computer
- Clockwork screwed with time to make sure it got sent
Lmk what yall do with this!

What are Dubai's real estate market trends and forecasts?
The Dubai real estate market has been dynamic in recent years, driven by global and regional factors, including economic growth, infrastructure development, and government initiatives. Here's an overview of the current trends and future forecasts for Dubai’s real estate market in 2024 and beyond:
Key Trends in Dubai’s Real Estate Market
1. Strong Post-Pandemic Recovery
Dubai’s real estate market has experienced a strong recovery following the global pandemic, particularly in 2022 and 2023.
Demand for luxury properties and high-end real estate has surged, fueled by wealthy expatriates, international investors, and high-net-worth individuals. Areas like Palm Jumeirah, Downtown Dubai, and Dubai Hills Estate have seen significant growth.
The Expo 2020 Dubai and government stimulus measures played a major role in boosting investor confidence and driving growth in both residential and commercial segments.
2. Surge in Off-Plan Sales
Off-plan properties (projects sold before construction completion) have seen renewed interest, particularly in luxury and waterfront developments. Developers are offering attractive payment plans to buyers, making it easier for investors to enter the market with lower upfront costs.
Iconic projects like Dubai Creek Harbour, Port De La Mer, and Marsa Al Arab continue to attract investors looking for future returns.
3. High Demand for Villas and Townhouses
The demand for larger living spaces such as villas and townhouses has increased due to changing lifestyle preferences. Many expatriates and investors are seeking spacious homes with private gardens, pools, and access to open spaces.
Communities like Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills Estate, and The Springs have witnessed strong price growth and rental demand.
4. Growing Rental Market
Rental yields remain attractive in Dubai, with areas like Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC), Dubai Marina, and Business Bay offering yields between 5% to 8%. Affordable neighborhoods such as International City and Dubai Sports City are also experiencing high rental demand.
As more expatriates move to Dubai, especially with the city’s favorable visa policies, demand for rental properties has remained robust.
5. Demand for Branded Residences and Luxury Living
Dubai has become a global hub for branded residences (properties associated with luxury brands like Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, etc.). These developments provide high-end amenities, concierge services, and prestige, making them popular among international investors.
Ultra-luxury developments such as Bulgari Residences, Six Senses Residences, and The Royal Atlantis cater to the growing demand for opulent living experiences.
6. Flexible Payment Plans and Developer Incentives
Many developers are offering flexible payment plans, such as post-handover payment schemes, where buyers can pay a portion of the property’s cost over several years after completion. This has helped attract both local and international buyers.
Developers are also offering incentives like waived service charges, free property management, and furniture packages to make properties more appealing to investors.
7. Sustainability and Green Living
Sustainable developments are gaining traction as Dubai emphasizes environmental responsibility and green building standards.
Projects like The Sustainable City and Dubai South focus on energy efficiency, waste reduction, and eco-friendly designs, catering to a growing segment of buyers seeking environmentally-conscious living options.
8. Digital and Smart Real Estate
The adoption of smart technologies in real estate, including home automation, AI-powered property management systems, and blockchain for property transactions, is transforming how buyers and investors interact with the market.
PropTech (property technology) is expected to play a major role in streamlining transactions, enhancing property management, and improving transparency in Dubai's real estate sector.
Real Estate Market Forecasts for Dubai
1. Continued Price Growth
Residential property prices are expected to continue their upward trend in 2024, particularly in the luxury and prime segments. However, the rate of growth may moderate compared to 2022-2023 due to a potential balancing of supply and demand.
Affordable housing and mid-tier properties are also anticipated to experience price stability, with steady growth in demand from expatriates and first-time buyers.
2. Increase in Foreign Investment
Dubai’s favorable visa programs, such as the Golden Visa and Retirement Visa, as well as relaxed regulations for foreign investors, are likely to drive more international buyers into the market.
Investors from countries like India, China, Russia, and Europe are expected to remain active, particularly in the luxury and off-plan markets.
3. Supply and Demand Balance
While Dubai's real estate market has historically faced issues of oversupply, especially in the apartment segment, supply levels are starting to align better with demand due to government interventions and a more controlled release of new projects.
By 2024, the market is expected to maintain a healthy balance, particularly in popular residential areas, which will contribute to price stabilization.
4. Higher Demand for Short-Term Rentals
The rise of short-term rental platforms like Airbnb has created opportunities for property owners to generate higher rental yields, especially in tourist-heavy areas such as Palm Jumeirah, Downtown Dubai, and JBR.
With Dubai’s growing tourism sector, short-term rentals will likely continue to be a profitable option for property investors.
5. Commercial Real Estate Rebound
Commercial properties in Dubai, including office spaces and retail outlets, are expected to see recovery and moderate growth. The e-commerce boom has also fueled demand for warehousing and logistics real estate, as companies expand their presence in the UAE.
Prime office spaces in areas like DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) and Business Bay will continue to attract corporate tenants, especially as Dubai strengthens its position as a global business hub.
6. Integration of Technology in Real Estate Transactions
By 2025, blockchain-based transactions are expected to become more common, allowing for faster, more secure, and transparent real estate deals.
Smart property management solutions and AI-driven platforms for evaluating property investments are also forecast to revolutionize the real estate market, improving investor confidence and operational efficiency.
7. Emerging Areas and New Developments
Dubai South, Expo 2020 District, and Dubai Creek Harbour are expected to become new investment hotspots as more infrastructure develops in these areas.
The expansion of public transportation networks, including new metro lines, will also drive growth in suburban areas and satellite cities like Al Furjan and Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC).
Challenges and Risks
Interest Rate Hikes: Rising global interest rates could impact mortgage affordability and buyer demand, especially in mid-tier property segments.
Oversupply Risk: Although supply is being better managed, certain segments like high-end apartments could still face oversupply issues, leading to price corrections in some areas.
Global Economic Factors: Global inflation, geopolitical tensions, and fluctuations in energy prices could affect investor sentiment and the purchasing power of expatriates and international investors.
Regulatory Changes: Any major shifts in real estate regulations or tax policies (although unlikely in the near term) could alter the attractiveness of the Dubai real estate market for foreign investors.
Conclusion
Dubai’s real estate market is expected to maintain a positive trajectory in 2024 and beyond, driven by robust demand for luxury properties, expatriate-friendly policies, and an improving economic outlook. Investors can look forward to steady capital appreciation, attractive rental yields, and new growth opportunities in emerging areas. However, careful consideration of market risks and economic factors will be essential to maximize returns.
