Isang Paglalakbay sa South Korea

Sa paglipas ng mga taon, marami sa atin ang nagnanais na makarating sa magandang bansang Korea. Hindi lang ito kilala sa kanilang sikat na K-pop at K-drama, kundi pati na rin sa kanilang makulay na kasaysayan, masasarap na pagkain, at kakaibang kultura. Sa paglalahad na ito, tuklasin natin ang mga aspeto ng isang lakbay sa Korea, kasama na ang kanilang kasaysayan, gastusin, tirahan, kainan, souvenir, kultura, tradisyon, selebrasyon, at klima.

Ang South Korea ay isang bansa na matatagpuan sa silagang bahagi ng Asya. Seoul ang kapital ng bansang ito. Noong wala pa nahati sa dalawa ang korea, ang bansang ito ay tinatawag na "Korea", na nagmula sa Dinastiyang Goryeo (minsan ay nakabaybay na Koryo), na nanggaling naman sa pangalan ng sinaunang Kaharian ng Goguryeo.Ang Korea ay dating binansagang “Hermit Kingdom”. Ayon sa kasaysayan, ito ay nasakop ng dayuhang bansa at nasupil pa ng iilang mga bansa. Dahil sa kapaguran, napag-isipan nilang mga Koreano na iwasan munag makipagsalamuha sa ibang bansa upang mapagtuunang pansin ang pagpapatibay at lakas ng kanilang kultura.

Kasaysayan

Ang Korea ay mayaman sa makulay na kasaysayan. Ito ang lugar kung saan unang isinilang ang mga hanggong at kabihasnan sa Asya. Ang bansa ay nasakop ng mga Tsino, Hapones, at Ruso sa iba't ibang panahon. Sa kasalukuyan, nahati ito sa dalawang bahagi: Hilagang Korea at Timog Korea. Ang hangganan ay nasa Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) kung saan nagaganap ang tensyon sa pagitan ng dalawang bahagi ng bansa.

Gastusin

Ang halaga ng iyong gastos ay maaaring mag-iba depende sa panahon ng paglalakbay, subalit para sa pangkalahatang pagtuturing, ang mga halaga ay sumusunod:

Airfare: Ang presyo ng plane ticket mula Pilipinas patungong Korea ay nag-iiba depende sa oras at airline. Karaniwang nag-uumpisa ito mula ₱15,000 pataas.

Accommodations

Ang mga hotel sa Korea ay mayroong iba't ibang mga klase, mula sa budget-friendly hanggang sa luxury. Ang presyo ng mga hotel room ay maaaring magsimula mula ₩50,000 (₱2,200) kada gabi para sa mas murang mga pagpipilian.

Transportation

Ang mga public transportation sa Korea ay madali at mura. Ang presyo ng subway o bus ticket ay nag-uumpisa sa ₩1,350 (₱60).

Tirahan

Sa Korea, marami kang pagpipilian para sa accommodation. Maaari kang mag-stay sa mga hotel, guesthouses, o Airbnb units. Kung nais mo ng mas mura, maaari ka ring mag-camp sa mga designated campgrounds.

Pagkain

Ang Korean cuisine ay kilala sa kanyang kasarapang kaldereta, barbecue, kimchi, at iba't ibang mga gulay. Hindi mo dapat palampasin ang pagkakataon na tikman ang bulgogi, bibimbap, at samgyeopsal. Huwag kalimutan ang sikat na street food tulad ng tteokbokki at odeng.

Budget Meals

Kung nais mong makatipid sa pagkain, maaari kang maghanap ng mga local eateries o "bunsik" (fast food) restaurants. Ang mga halaga ay nagsisimula mula ₩3,000 (₱130) pataas.

Souvenir

Ang mga popular na souvenir sa Korea ay ang mga hanbok (traditional Korean clothing), K-pop merchandise, Korean cosmetics, at mga traditional crafts tulad ng celadon pottery.

Kultura at Tradisyon

Kasuotan

Ang Hanbok (sa Timog Korea) o Joseon-ot (sa Hilagang Korea, binabaybay ding Chosŏn-ot) ay ang tradisyunal na damit ng Korea. Binubuo ang pambabaeng hanbok ng naibabalot na chima o palda at ng isang tila bolerong jeogori o tsaketa. Binubuo naman ang para sa kalalakihan ng maiksingjeogori at ng baji o pantalon. Kapwa maaaring patungan ang pambabae at panlalaking hanbok ng isang mahabangabrigo, ang durumagi, na may katulad na gupit o yari. Sa kasalukuyan, isinusuot ng mga Koreano ang hanbok para sa mga araw ng pagdiriwang o kasiyahan at para sa mga seremonyang katulad ng kasalan o paglilibing.

Selebrasyon

Sa Korea, mayroong mga makulay na selebrasyon tulad ng Seollal (Lunar New Year) at Chuseok (harvest festival). Sa mga panahong ito, inaayos ang mga pista at mga parada sa mga kalsada, kung saan makakakita ka ng mga tradisyonal na pagsayaw at musika.

Klima

Ang klima sa Korea ay nag-iiba depende sa panahon. Ang tag-init ay mula Hunyo hanggang Agosto, kung saan mainit at maalinsangan. Ang tag-lamig ay mula Disyembre hanggang Pebrero, kung saan maaaring magkaruon ng snow. Ang tag-ulan ay mula Hunyo hanggang Setyembre.

Sa paglalakbay mo sa Korea, makakaranas ka ng maraming karanasan na hindi malilimutan. Mula sa makulay na kasaysayan, masasarap na pagkain, magandang tirahan, kultura, at tradisyon, hanggang sa mga espesyal na selebrasyon at magandang klima, tiyak na ang Korea ay magiging isang memorable destination para sa iyo. Huwag kalimutan ang mga souvenir para sa mga alaala ng iyong paglalakbay sa bansang ito.

Películas LGBT+

Ya que estamos en nuestro mes creí que lo más correcto sería investigar un poquito más allá de las mismas cinco películas gringas que nos venden siempre y generar una lista más amplia, enriquecida de distintas culturas, países, idiomas, épocas, etc. para variar un poquito la gama y además dejar de rendirle culto a esa hegemonía.

Aquí va la lista, si tienen más sugerencias dejenlas abajo.

Moonlight (2016): Un joven de familia humilde que vive en Miami en la época en que los cárteles de la droga libran en la ciudad una auténtica batalla, tiene problemas para aceptar su homosexualidad. Mientras madura en un ambiente hostil, experimenta la alegría, la ira, el placer de la belleza, el éxtasis y el dolor. Todo lo conocerá y de todo aprenderá.

Saving Face (2002): Una lesbiana asiática americana reprimida y su madre lidian con amores secretos que desafían los tradicionalismos de su cultura.

Ah-ga-ssi o The Handmaiden (2016): Sookee es una joven que, en la Corea de los años treinta, es contratada para servir como doncella en la casa de una rica heredera japonesa. Hideko, que vive recluida en una gran mansión bajo la influencia de un tirano, desconoce que, en realidad, la doncella está involucrada en un complot para estafarla.

Bara no Sōretsu (1969): En una versión japonesa de "Edipo Rey", un hijo homosexual mata a su madre y se acuesta con su padre.

Dracula's daughter (1936): Una vampiresa condesa busca ayuda de un psicólogo para deshacerse de sus deseos vampirescos.

Rebecca (1940): Una joven mujer se vuelve la segunda esposa de un hombre viudo, llegando a vivir en la sombra de quien fue alguna vez fue su esposa. Laurence anyways (2012): La historia de un amor imposible entre una mujer llamada Fred y una mujer transgénero llamada Laurence, quien revela su deseo profundo de convertirse en su verdadero ser.

GARMENT DISTRICT, CHELSEA, KOREATOWN Y HUDSON YARDS

¡Buenos días a todos! En el día de hoy nos iremos con Lilly a visitar lo que nos queda de Midtown. Como sabéis, en el último post visitamos de la calle 42 para arriba, de modo que esta vez visitaremos el lado oeste de la 42 para abajo. En este cuadrante podremos disfrutar de algunos de los monumentos más emblemáticos de la ciudad, como el famoso Empire State Building; así como algunos de los más novedosos como The Vessel ¿Estáis listos?

MAÑANA

Para empezar, debéis saber una cosa sobre Chelsea y Garment, y es que todo su encanto se encuentra muy repartido por los barrios de modo que hoy nos tocará andar bastante e ir y volver si es que queremos verlo todo.

Dicho esto, un buen lugar para empezar a explorar la zona sería en Garment District, bajando a la Times Square 42 st. Station con el metro (se puede acceder mediante la N, la Q, la R y la W). Una vez allí, andamos dirección oeste hacia la Fashion Ave, donde nos podremos encontrar un poco más abajo con nuestra primera parada: la escultura de The Garment Worker. Esta representa la historia de los trabajadores que se mudaron al barrio y que hicieron de él un lugar mejor en la época industrial.

Seguiremos bajando a la calle 34, donde encontraremos el famoso Macy’s, una de las tiendas más emblemáticas de la ciudad y muy conocidas por las “pardes” (o cabalgatas) que hacen el Día de Acción de Gracias. En estamisma calle, al lado de la tienda, podremos tomar un café al Macy’s Herald Square café, disfrutando de las vistas de la plaza que le da nombre; así como otras tiendas de marcas conocidas como Hollister, Vans, Crocs, Forever 21, Old Navy entre otras.

Si queremos seguir con nuestras compras, en la calle que se encuentra justo debajo de la de Macy’s también hay el emblemático Manhattan Mall, junto con ni más ni menos que el famoso Empire State Building. Como bien sabréis, éste se puede visitar. Sin embargo, como se ha mencionado anteriormente, Lilly siempre recomienda subir al Top of the Rock, si es que se quiere invertir dinero en buenas vistas, puesto que desde allí se puede ver todos los monumentos más emblemáticos de la ciudad. Sin embargo, si quieres ver la Freedom Tower desde cerca y con altura (como diría Rosalía), ésta es tu mejor opción junto con The Edge, pero de él ya hablaremos más tarde. Finalmente y terminando con nuestra mañana de compras, dos calles más abajo podemos encontrar un Nordstorm Rack, uno de los lugares favoritos de Lilly para comprar. Se trarta de un Outlet en formato grandes superfícias donde podremos encontrar las marcas más lujosas a los mejores precios. ¡No te lo puedes perder!

En la misma zona donde nos encontramos, tenemos la opción de visitar multitud de monumentos emblemáticos no solo de la ciudad, sino de toda la cultura Norte-Americana. Hablamos pues del famoso Madison Square Garden, donde se han realizado algunos de los conciertos más épicos de la historia, así como multitud de finales de la famosa liga de básquet NBA. ¡Asegúrate de no perderte su cartelera! Sin embargo, si los conciertos no son lo tuyo, no te puedes perder las vistas de la gigantesca infraestructura, aunque sea solo desde fuera. Justo debajo de ésta, encontramos la famosa Pennsylvania Station más conocida por los neoyorquinos como Penn Station. Es una de las estaciones más importantes de la ciudad, puesto que es un importante punto ferroviario de los trenes de cercanías de la ciudad de Nueva York. Por las mañanas suele estar muy ajetreado ya que la gente que viene de barrios externos a trabajar en Manhattan suele bajar en esta estación o hacer transbordo con el metro.

A continuación, seguiremos bajando. Cabe destacar que dejaremos a nuestro lado este el barrio de Korea Town. Si no os gusta la comida coreana o sí os gusta y ya empezáis a tener hambre, podéis visitarlo a continuación, pero como a Lilly le encanta, hemos decidido dejarlo para la hora de comer. ¡Ya os hemos avisado de que hoy daríamos algunas vueltas! ;P

Si seguimos bajando por la séptima avenida dirección sur, nos encontramos con The Museum at FIT (Fashion Institute of Thechnology), muy recomendable si te apasiona la moda. Allí podrás ver obras de grandes diseñadores, así como los trabajos de los estudiantes y futuros grandes diseñadores que estudian allí. Si seguimos bajando, en la calle 23, nos encontramos con el emblemático Hotel Chelsea y, justo a su lado, el CIneápolis Chelsea, uno de los cinemas más Retro y con más historia de la ciudad.

Si andamos en diagonal sur-oeste, nos encontraremos en la octava calle con The Joyce Theater, otra joya retro pero en este caso en forma de teatro. Allí podréis consultar la cartelera e ir a ver multitud de espectáculos de danza, humor o teatro entre otros. Aunque si no os apetece, siempre os podéis hacer una sesión de fotos con su fachada, ¡El cartel de JOYCE os transportará a otra época! Otras paradas interactivas que podéis hacer en el barrio de Chelsea son el Robin Museum of Art (si os apasiona el arte) o el KGB Espionage Museum (donde encontrareis los gadgets más espectaculares de las películas de espías… ¿o a lo mejor son reales?). En esta zona también encontrareis los almacenes Marshalls, que vendrían a ser lo mismo que el Nordstorm Rack peró de otra cadena. ¡No te los pierdas, están llenos de grandes ofertas, palabra de Lilly!

Y ahora sí, seguro que ya os está entrando hambre… Así pues, insertaremos aquí la visita del barrio de Korea Town aunque, como ya hemos dicho antes, lo puedes visitar ahora o al principio de nuestra ruta (si no quieres dar tantos tumbos). En Korea Town no encontrarás grandes monumentos, pero sí todo aquello tradicional de Corea: comida, cosmética, tecnología… Algunas de las tiendas favoritas de Lilly son HMart, Koryo Books y The Face Shop. Allí también podrás hacerte desde tratamientos faciales a manicuras a un gran precio, ¡e incluso ir de Karaoke en karaoke CITY!

¡HORA DE COMER!

Ahora sí que sí, ha llegado la hora de llenar las tripas. En el día de hoy tenemos dos opciones para comer: si nos encontramos en Korea Town tenemos restaurantes del barrio, y si estamos en la zona sur de Chelsea, también encontraremos otras opciones si queremos comer ya en el barrio donde pasaremos la tarde.

TARDE

Justo en esta zona donde encontramos los últimos tres restaurantes mencionados, encontramos las grandes calerías del Chelsea Market, un marcado histórico donde también encontraremos cafeterías, heladerías y multitud de lugares para tomar el postre (¡así como para seguir de compras!). Al exterior del mercado, delante de la entrada, podremos toprnos con el Artist & Fleas Chelsea Market, un mercado callejero donde muchos artistas callejeros van a vender sus obras (desde joyas a esculturas), a precios bastante razonables. A Lilly le encanta comprarse pendentes allí… En la misma manzana se encuentra el ArtechHouse Chelsea, una increíble exposición de luces donde podrás disfrutar de la mejor tecnología audiovisual. ¡Una experiencia única!

A continuación, nos dirigiremos a la Washington Street para subirnos a uno de los lugares favoritos de los neoyorquinos para ir a pasear: la Highline. Éste es un parque público construido en una histórica vía de tren elevada por sobre las calles del Midtown West de Manhattan. Salvada de la demolición por los residentes del barrio, la High Line se abrió el 2009 como un espacio híbrido entre jardín botánico y galería de arte y diseño al aire libre. En él podrás disfrutar de la naturaleza, el arte y el patrimonio de arquitectura de Nueva York en una agradable caminata de 2,33 km de distancia. Si te fijas bien, aún se mantienen los railes originales de la línea de tren a lo largo de todo el recorrido.

La Highline termina en uno de los barrios más de moda y en mayor crecimiento de la ciudad en la actualidad: Hudson Yards. Levantado sobre la antigua terminal de ferrocarril donde culminaba la línea de tren, Hudson Yards modifica la silueta de la ciudad llenándola de rascacielos e increíbles infraestructuras como The Shed, el centro cultural más grande y nuevo de la ciudad (por el momento, claro).

Una vez allí, tienes dos opciones fantásticas para disfrutar del mejor atardecer de tu vida (créeme, no exagero). Uno es The Vessel, una increíble estructura de hierro en forma de pirámide invertida formada simplemente de escaleras y forrada de un metal en color oro rosa. Con una doble función de mirador y escultura, consta de dieciocho pisos por donde pasear y tomar magníficas fotos del barrio y el rio Hudson pintado de dorado por la puesta de sol.

La segunda opción y la más nueva (puesto que se inauguró el pasado 2020) es The Edge. Con una altura de 345 metros de altura es el mirador más alto de todo el hemisferio oeste de la ciudad, con unas vistas de 360 grados de la ciudad y el Hudson River. North Korea frees 3 American prisoners ahead of a planned Trump-Kim summit

PYONGYANG, North Korea--Three American men who had been imprisoned by North Korea are on their way to the United States, President Trump announced Wednesday after they were released to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during his visit to Pyongyang.

They were freed after Pompeo met for 90 minutes with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on his second trip to Pyongyang ahead of a planned summit between Trump and Kim that could happen by next month.

Trump hailed their release in a tweet after Pompeo had left the country with the three Americans aboard his U.S. government plane. The secretary is “in the air and on his way back from North Korea with the 3 wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting,” Trump wrote. “They seem to be in good health.”

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement that Trump “appreciates leaders Kim Jong Un’s action” and views it as “a positive gesture of goodwill.” She said all three Americans, Kim Dong-chul, Tony Kim and Kim Hak-song, boarded the plane without assistance.

Pompeo told reporters traveling with him that the three were given a quick medical exam by a physician who was accompanying the secretary and that their health “is as good as could be, given what they’ve been through.” He said they would be transferred to another plane, apparently at Yokota Air Base in Japan, that is better equipped to handle medical needs.

The three men were turned over to U.S. custody after Pompeo’s meeting with Kim. According to a U.S. official who briefed reporters in Pyongyang, a North Korean official came to the Koryo Hotel to inform Pompeo that Kim had granted the three men “amnesty” on charges of espionage and hostile acts against the government--charges that U.S. officials have said were bogus.

“We’re granting amnesty to the three detained Americans,” the official quoted the North Korean emissary as telling Pompeo. “We issued the order to grant immediate amnesty to the detainees.”

“You should make care that they do not make the same mistakes again,” the North Korean added, according to the U.S. official. “This was a hard decision.”

The release of the men coincided with additional discussions between the Trump administration and the Kim regime in preparation for the historic summit, which would be the first between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader. Trump had been criticized by some foreign policy analysts for agreeing to the meeting without publicly demanding the release of the Americans as a prerequisite.

But their freedom has offered Trump new momentum in his high-stakes diplomatic gambit aimed at curtailing North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. An administration official said the two sides made “substantial progress” on summit planning and agreed to meet again before the leaders’ meeting. Trump has said officials have worked out a time and location for the meeting, but he has not disclosed details.

The news of the Americans’ release came as a huge relief to the families of the men.

The three detainees were treated as “prisoners of war” and had not been seen since June, when a State Department official was allowed a brief visit with them while collecting Otto Warmbier, the detained college student who fell into a coma in North Korea and died shortly after his return to the United States.

The longest-held prisoner was Kim Dong-chul, a 64-year-old who once lived in Fairfax, Va., and was arrested in October 2015. He had been based in the Chinese city of Yanji, near the border with North Korea, and traveled back and forth to the special economic zone of Rajin-Sonbong, where he managed a hotel business.

But on his last visit, he was accused of spying for South Korea’s intelligence agencies, seeking to obtain details of the North’s military programs and trying to spread “religious” ideas--a serious crime in the North. He was sentenced in April 2016 to 10 years in prison after a sham trial.

Then, a year ago, two men associated with the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, or PUST, a private institution run by Korean American Christians, were detained.

Tony Kim, a 59-year-old accountant, had made at least seven trips to Pyongyang, usually for a month at a time, to teach international finance and management to students at PUST, his son Sol Kim said in an interview.

He was stopped at Pyongyang’s airport in April 2017 and arrested for “committing criminal acts of hostility aimed to overturn” North Korea.

Two weeks later, Kim Hak-song, an agricultural consultant who was also living in Yanji and working at PUST, was detained. He was also arrested on suspicion of “hostile acts” against North Korea, the official Korean Central News Agency said.

Kim Dong-chul and Tony Kim were both born in South Korea, while Kim Hak-song is believed to have been born in China, although he is ethnically Korean.

The concert started 45 minutes late because a fan had a medical emergency and they stopped letting people in for like half an hour.

Kihyun getting too hype and Changkyun and Minhyuk yelling at him to calm down.

Seventeen in Dallas

So I’m not a huge fan of Seventeen. I wouldn’t call myself a Carat but I do enjoy listening to their music. When Highlight and Don’t Wanna Cry came out, Seventeen was most definitely on my radar and when they announced their US tour, and some of my friends said they were interested in going and that another friend and I would have moved to Texas by then, it made sense to go to their concert in Dallas.

So I started classes on the 22nd and their concert was on the 23rd so we decided to leave Wednesday (the day of) to drive to Dallas and book a hotel for the night since we figured the concert would tire us out and drive back to San Antonio Thursday and be back in time for my night class. Everything went according to plan nicely.

So once we got to Dallas, we grabbed lunch at a Korean BBQ place called Koryo Kalbi. I couldn’t tell if I was really missing Korean food, really hungry, or if the food was amazing but either way, it was delicious and satisfying. Afterwards, we checked into our hotel and rested. My roomie and I took a nap while our other friend chilled.

Once we were well-rested, we headed out to the concert venue. We got there around maybe 6:30 or 7:00 and let me tell you, I loved seeing everyone were their Seventeen gear just because of the pastel pinks and blues cause if anyone knows me, light pinks are my aesthetics. Like everything I own is a light-pastel pink. Just seeing the colors had me hyped for the concert.

One thing I was disappointed in, and I’m not sure if it’s my fault cause maybe I was too late or not smart enough to find it or what, but I really wanted a light stick but they weren’t being sold. If I’m correct, no Seventeen merchandise was being sold and that was a little bit upsetting. But it’s okay. I will have another opportunity to buy a Seventeen light stick.

Once the concert started, I was so happy. First off, Hoshi’s back! Seventeen was whole again! (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, Hoshi stopped activities due to health reasons, so he wasn’t there at KCON a few days before.) Secondly, the fans were so excited and I could really tell how much energy and love they had for Seventeen. It’s also nice to see such great fans.

The boys put on a great show. Groups performance were awesome and you could see how much they love working with each other and interacting with the fans. For unit performances, I really loved that you could see each member’s talent and skills. I loved loved loved the vocal unit’s performances. Their vocals are just absolutely amazing. Vernon is my bias but at KCON and at this concert Seungkwan shot up my list and I fell in love with not just the personality that he shows and stage presence but his vocals as well.

At the end of the concert, the boys had put together a cute little video about what Carats mean to them. It was so heartfelt and you could really tell how much Seventeen loves their fans and how grateful they are.

But the concert was a wonderful experience. I would love to go to another concert of theirs and I wish them the best of luck.

Over the past six decades, Pyongyang has become the crown jewel of North Korea as a grandiose vision of independence, self-reliance, and national pride. Under the rule of Kim Jong Un, construction continues to expand in order to fulfil the promise of the third Supreme Leader: “Let us turn the whole country into a socialist fairyland.”

Bottom: The breakfast buffet in the Koryo Hotel could be straight from a Wes Anderson film set. Built in 1985 as the main hotel for visiting foreigners, its twin 45-storey towers, connected by a bridge, are an iconic presence on the Pyongyang skyline. With a total of 500 rooms, the hotel also has a bookshop, movie room and banquet rooms, as well as a casino and “wading pool” in the basement.
