Tears of the Kingdom is actually a really fitting name for a Breath of the Wild sequel, and we can infer a few things from it too.

Not only are these tears from grief over a fallen kingdom, but they probably refer to the liquid that the Shiekah technology uses. Every time you download something, it drips into your slate like a teardrop.

The two titles are parallel too. "Breath" and "tears" are both intimate, natural human processes, and sometimes reactions to sublime and emotional situations, such as witnessing a panorama of an open world for the first time, or recalling fond memories of those who passed away.

While the first title was about exploring the open-world wild that Hyrule reverted to after it fell, so far every Tears of the Kingdom trailer leans in to Link exploring places of hidden lore about the kingdom of Hyrule, from temples in the sky to the mummified remains of Ganon himself underneath the castle. The graphic behind the game's logo isn't a flower like the first - it's a symbol of a kingdom's story.

Aesthetic: 5/5.  If I were the art director I'd have gone in a less cartoony direction, but they really have a strong style going and they execute it well.  The animations of the characters add... character... and the alchemy stuff (I think I'm in an alchemy-themed kingdom) is pretty.  The town your castle is in has a day cycle just to be extra cute.  Your dragons fly around it while they're off duty.

Writing: 3/5.  The story is about as bleah as you'd expect for the genre, complete with typos, but there are decent enough little blurbs about the "immortals".  The overarching plotlike-thing about fighting gnomes is silly but at least they aren't taking it that seriously.

Interface: 3/5. They're trying, I can tell they have a real UI effort going on here, but it's kind of a maze that they compensate for by adding lots of shortcuts so you can accomplish prerequisites by trying and failing to do the things they rely on and then following the bouncing ball.  It's a pretty friendly bouncing ball, but I still keep getting lost, and some sections of the game it's trying to draw my attention to have yet to make sense (particularly all the events; most games these days have them and Infinity Kingdom did not introduce any of them usefully).

Coherence: 3/5.  It sort of makes sense that you're hanging out fortifying your city and engaging in various actions against gnomes but they're teasing PVP that as far as I can tell is totally unjustified.

Gestalt Experience: 3/5.  Despite some best-in-class strong points this is not really a game I'd play on its own merits.

I think this game might have missed its calling as an animated children's show about the "immortals", a charmingly diverse array of mostly legendary and historical figures ranging from Mulan through Arthuriana to first century Nubian queens.  (...just one of those, actually, I haven't encountered anaother first century Nubian queen.)  They even have gender parity, it looks like, which is neat and probably inspired some of the relatively obscure choices.  Infinity Kingdom does have all the gameplay elements you might expect from, well, a game, and they're mostly pretty slick gameplay elements too, it's just the real strong points aren't as front and center as you'd hope when a lot of the time spent playing is just collecting wood and upgrading walls and checking to see that you have enhanced your Helen of Troy sufficiently to cream some hapless gnomes.

Alas, despite its charm, due to a technical misfortune I will not be receiving any imaginary money for my hard work on this one, and having been informed of this tragedy, I will not be playing it any more.  (Tapjoy, the entity that connects game playing to imaginary money, did not successfully register my download as "attributed to Tapjoy".)  I will lowkey miss my dragons, who sneezed when poked.

Across all of Wargaming’s titles, from »World of Warships« and »World of Warplanes« to, of course, World of Tanks, online multiplayer battles are the beating heart of everything we do. While a solid social gaming experience is what our games are renowned for, World of Tanks in particular is a series that covers so many platforms, and it’s important to look at each individual platform and customise the game experience for the audience. It was only with the launch of War Stories, a series of story campaigns playable in single-player and co-operative multiplayer on PlayStation 4 and Xbox, that we broke new ground and introduced a unique experience only available on consoles.

From Concept to Story Shooters have been one of the most popular genres on home consoles for years, and most of them come with a single-player mode as standard. In connecting with the console audience, which differs from the audience for World of Tanks on PC, we found that the opportunity to take on a solid single-player experience was a recurring request from the community. This was an area we were very keen to explore, and with console gamers generally being more receptive to a more immersive solo experience, we knew that World of Tanks on consoles was fertile ground for trying something that hadn’t been done before in Wargaming’s PC ventures. The idea of creating a story campaign didn’t come over night, but it was certainly something that we set our sights on in terms of developing World of Tanks as its own entity on consoles, designed with the console audience in mind.

We definitely faced a challenge in breaking new ground. We realised that a lot of the fundamental components and infrastructure necessary for the single-player experience could be quite an intensive payload if delivered all at once. However, we knew that if it could be introduced over time, we could lay the groundwork for our vision ahead of time rather than all at once. Certain features were introduced over time, from maps that had specific objectives, to the presence of enemy AI in the game’s training mode, and having the ability to form rooms to fight in more curated battles. As players responded positively to the changes we introduced, we realised we were heading in the right direction, and War Stories as a concept began to come together.

Each of the eight War Stories has its own presentation style while focusing on other interesting scenarios.

We settled on introducing a campaign mode; this wouldn’t be anything monolithic, but rather a portal for us to present little vignettes and individual stories that wouldn’t be possible through the multiplayer experience. War Stories could be anything, from a window into a small but pivotal part of history, or perhaps something entirely new, something never seen before that would pique players’ imaginations. As an avid gamer, I know that a lot of studios tend to lean into historical events and battles such as D-Day quite a lot. Considering the scope and the drama of WWII, I find it amazing that we only ever see or experience a handful of particularly dramatic battles in gaming, especially when there’s almost six years of battles, events, and untold stories to choose from. I wanted War Stories to be an opportunity for us to branch out, to discover more conflicts, see more sides to certain events, and generally give a more satisfying experience from the perspective of both historians and gamers.

From Inspiration to Action I am personally a huge fan of alternative history, and though it hasn’t been a mainstream genre for a while, it’s certainly seen something akin to a resurgence thanks to the popularity of recent popular television series such as »Man in the High Castle« and »the Handmaid’s Tale«. Diving a little deeper into my own influences, Harry Turtledove is an author who has produced a lot of work on alternate histories, including ‘what if?’ scenarios revolving around the historical implications of a victory of the south in the American Civil War. As a big fan of history, and I wanted to follow suit and explore something that isn’t offered by anyone else.

Alternative history is a very fanciful genre, but it’s at its most fascinating when you can present a reality that demonstrates how even the slightest deviation can alter the course of history. »Back to the Future« saw a hellish world made possible by Biff Tannen getting access to sports results before they happened, and »Doctor Who« featured an episode that saw the world fall prey to alien invasions, fascism and nuclear attacks because someone didn’t attend a job interview. The key to the successful execution of alternative historical fiction, is having a true and solid historical foundation on which you’re basing your story. When you know history well enough, you can make an educated guess as to what could have happened if someone made a left turn instead of a right turn, and the implications that could ripple out of this. With War Stories, we set out to make the historical background plausible enough that people wouldn’t think it was pure fantasy. However, we could afford to take some creative licence in certain places for the sake of making the gameplay fun.

Two of the War Stories campaigns we released last year are great examples of how we took a left turn with certain historical events that originally went very differently. Operation Sealion was based on a very real German plot to execute an amphibious invasion of the United Kingdom. Due to Britain retaining air superiority throughout the Battle of Britain, this operation never came to fruition and Germany were forced to revise their plans. In War Stories, we presented a version of history where Germany didn’t make any mistakes, and the Battle of France and the events at Dunkirk crippled Britain’s stamina and capacity to fight back prior the Battle of Britain, leaving the British Isles wide open for invasion. Visually, the sight of a German army looming over wartime London is very powerful and effective, as a sight that preyed on the minds of Britain’s populace during the 1940s. One of Churchill’s famous speeches even warned and prepared people for this possibility. Kennedy’s War took War Stories to the most extreme end of its scale by escalating the Cold War tensions between the US and the Soviet Union to the point of nuclear brinkmanship. Similar to how the threat of German invasion both terrified Britain and spurred them on to fight, the spectre of nuclear war loomed large over the entire world through the Cuban Missile Crisis and beyond, so this was another powerful storytelling playground for us to operate in.

The story campaign »Runaway Tiger«, highlighting the sands of Egypt as a battlefield, was a success for Wargaming and – even more importantly –, a door opener for future concepts.

Recent Challenges We were incredibly proud of the initial story campaigns we developed, both from narrative and technical standpoints. Testament to the talent and flexibility of our incredible team, we were able to repurpose existing assets, as well as introducing new ones over time, to reduce the intensity on both development and download sizes. Maps of central Europe could be refashioned convincingly to look like Cuba on the brink of nuclear war, and existing terrain (that can be very memory-consumptive) could have graphical elements adapted to create entirely new geographical features.

One of our more recent challenges, at the end of 2017, saw us doubling down on the character-based approach we were taking with War Stories. The reception from players proved to be really positive, so we decided to expand the approach when we began the development of »Runaway Tiger«. The approach I wanted to take could be considered a little more fanciful, as the scenario wasn’t based on a real event, but I thought it would be interesting to have a story that dealt with a prototype »Tiger 131«, one of the most historically significant and popular tanks from WWII. Historically, Tigers were tested on the Eastern Front, but a suggestion came to take the story to North Africa since the desert was a unique environment we hadn’t yet explored, and we followed the idea of the Germans considering Africa a safer place to develop a prototype vehicle than Eastern Europe. Having someone infiltrate the facility where the tank was being tested led to the opportunity to create a unique hero to really impact the character-based approach, and so we came up with the idea of a female French Resistance fighter to lead a crew on this mission. Everything snowballed from there and came together to make one of our most ambitious stories to date.

With Runaway Tiger under our belt, we had a vision for the future of World of Tanks on consoles. Spoils of War followed Runaway Tiger in April 2018, and with this, we wanted to create a series of thematically-linked tales featuring different heroes from different nations. Again, this was an extension of our drive to create some more character-based stories, through which we could take more liberties in the name of a good story, and have more freedom to operate in the worlds we were creating. We pictured the end of WWII, and the notion of it dragging on for way too long, to the point where the world is tired of fighting and the national loyalties soldiers have long held to begin to fray. With patriotism in jeopardy, we put our characters in situations where they would have to make a tough choice. Spoils of War sees its heroes following their conscience, even though it puts them at odds with their orders and their superiors.

The story core resolves around one of the most iconic tanks of WWII: Germany’s »Tiger 131«.

»Sieben Ritter« was the first part of the saga, and like a lot of excellent stories, it takes its inspiration from »Seven Samurai«. We saw a parallel between these armored, tank-faring warriors, and knights of old. The hero of this story is Don Quixote, again named for a classic hero character from pop culture, and a band of grizzled warriors who are begged by a desperate town to help save it. The Connoisseur also took a lot of influence from »Three Kings and Kelly’s Heroes«, stories that still resonate with audiences now.

At the end of these stories, the heroes decided to fight for themselves and abandon their nations. This has led to the inception of Mercenaries, our latest and biggest update, which couldn’t have been possible without everything we learnt with War Stories. As we move into the universe of Mercenaries, the storytelling is starting to become a lot more organic, more ingrained in our development of tanks, crews, and worlds, and not so much the independent entity that it is now. We’re happy to have, through War Stories and Mercenaries, succeeded in bringing a totally unique World of Tanks experience to consoles, and we will definitely continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with this franchise in the future.

Ogilby: A Free 17th Century Road Atlas Brush Set for Fantasy Maps

“You come to a Descent sprinkled with Woods, whence by Loudwater, a small Village, (a Brook accompanying your Road on the Left) at 32’3. You enter High Wickham, seated in a pleasant Vale, a large and Well-built Town, numbering near 200 Houses, with several good Inns, as the Cathern Wheel, etc. Is Govern’d by a Mayor, Recorder, etc. Sends Burgesses to Parliament, hath a well-frequented Market on Fridays, and two Fairs annually…”

Outside of some slight language differences, that description of 17th century High Wycombe could be taken from any modern travel guide. It comes from John Ogilby’s 1675 book Britannia, Volume the First. Or an Illustration of the Kingdom of England and Dominion of Wales: By a Geographical and Historical Description of the Principal Roads thereof (the full title goes on much longer, and I’ll spare us all.) Britannia is, in essence, part road atlas and part travel guide—it also serves as the source for my latest brush set named after the man himself: Ogilby.

While the depictions of British towns, inns, and valleys are charming, the actual maps themselves are a delight. They are unlike anything I’ve seen before. These maps place the traveler’s perspective front and center making for a much more intimate experience. Read bottom to top and left to right one can trace their route through the countryside. Windmills, wells, ponds, homes, and churches are lovingly depicted as well as are the small towns clustered around roads and random points of interest. Climbs and descents are documented as one would encounter them as they crossed the rolling countryside. The route will move, but barely, instead, significant turns are shown with subtle shifts indicated by the compass rose that rotates on subsequent “scrolls.” I thought this was an interesting solution to show more substantial variations in a road’s direction.

Fiction has long had a fascination with the road story, and fantasy isn’t an exception. So it’s a wonder this sort of map hasn’t been attempted before. (Prove me wrong, if you know a book with this style of road atlas, let me know!) It’s so useful and such an interesting presentation. After spending some time with the plates and Ogilby’s descriptions, I knew at once these etchings would make an excellent brush set. Whether one is attempting to recreate an Ogilby-style road atlas or just using his various signs and symbols on a more standard map.

As I worked, I realized that I would need to build this set off of multiple plates, and uh… the set sort of grew in the making. Ogilby is now my largest set ever. Inside you’ll find over 870 brushes (yes, seriously), including:

Van der Aa: An 18th Century Cartography Brush Set

This regional map set is based on a map by Dutch cartographer and publisher, Pieter Van der Aa. It’s a beautifully rendered version of the Mingrelia region of northwest Georgia. While not as extensive as other sets, the size of the map allowed for larger brushes that helps highlight the uniqueness of each symbol. It also features a failed wall!

Gomboust: A 17th Century Urban Cartography Brush Set

My first brush set to focus on creating realistic maps for fantastical urban environments! Gomboust is a huge set, and its symbols are extracted from Jacques Gomboust’s beautiful 1652 map of Paris, France. His style is detailed yet quirky, isometric yet off-kilter, packed with intricacies, and it brings a lot of personality to a project.

Harrewyn: An 18th Century Cartography Brush Set

Based on Eugene Henry Fricx’s “Cartes des Paysbas et des Frontieres de France,” this set leans into its 1727 gothic styling and its focus on the developed rather than the natural. It’s hauntingly familiar yet strikingly different. If you’re looking for more natural elements, Harrewyn works well alongside other sets as well.

Popple: A Free 18th Century Cartography Brush Set

This set has quickly become a favorite, and it’s perfect for a wide variety of projects. The brushes are taken from 1746’s A Map of the British Empire in America by Henry Popple, and it has a fresh style that does a fantastic job capturing the wildness of a frontier. Plus, it has swamps! And we know swamps have become a necessity in fantasy cartography.

Donia: A Free 17th Century Settlement Brush Set

While not my most extensive set (a little over one hundred brushes), Donia boasts one of the more unique takes on settlements from the 17th century. If you’re looking for flora, I suggest checking out other sets, but if you want to pay attention to your map’s cities, towns, castles, churches, towers, forts, even fountains, then this is the right set for you.

Blaeu: A Free 17th Century Cartography Brush Set

Based on Joan Blaeu’s Terræ Sanctæ—a 17th-century tourist map of the Holy Land—this set includes a ton of unique and varied signs as well as a large portion of illustrative cartouches that can add a flair authenticity to any fantasy map. Elegant and nuanced, everything works within a system, but nearly every sign is unique.

Aubers: An 18th Century Cartography Brush Set

An 18th Century brush set based on a map from 1767 detailing the journey of François Pagès, a French naval officer, who accompanied the Spanish Governor of Texas on a lengthy exploration through Louisiana, Texas, and Mexico. A unique southwestern set with a few interesting deviations—including three volcanos!

L’Isle: An 18th Century Battlefield Brush Set for Fant

A departure from the norm, this set is based on the Plan Batalii map, which was included in a special edition of The First Atlas of Russia in 1745. A detailed view of a battle during the Russo-Turkish War of 1735–1739. Canon! Units! Battles! Perfect for mapping out the combat scenarios in your fantasy stories.

Widman: A 17th Century Cartography Brush Set

A 17th Century brush set based on the work of Georgio Widman for Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi’s atlas published in 1692. A fantastic example of Cantelli da Vignola’s influence and a solid set for any fantastic map. This is the workhorse of antique map brush sets—perfect for nearly any setting.

Walser: An 18th Century Cartography Brush Set

An 18th Century brush set based on the work of Gabriel Walser with a focus on small farms and ruins and a robust set of mountains and hills. This is a great brush set to see how Vignola’s influence persisted across generations. It was etched over 80 years after the Widman set, but you’ll find a few familiar symbols within.

Lumbia: A Sketchy Cartography Brush Set

Our first trip to Walt Disney World was back in 2007. It was such an exciting trip and we created memories that we will never forget. From the moment we got to our resort it was a whirlwind of fun and adventure but looking back on it now there are things I wish we’d known before we got there. Including that first trip, we have been to Disney World 11 times, so I wanted to share some of what we’ve learnt along the way. Hopefully some of these things will help you to plan your own trip and enjoy your time at Disney World even more.

You will be tired on your first day (trust me!)

Admittedly we live in the UK, so have a 9-hour flight plus transfers to deal with, but we learnt the hard way just how exhausting travelling can be. On our first trip to Disney World we got to our resort late in the evening and the following day we couldn’t wait to get to a park and start soaking up the Disney atmosphere. Our park of choice was Animal Kingdom. We had no idea just how much walking there would be and just how sapping the Florida heat and humidity could be. We had an amazing day, but by the time we sat to watch the wonderful parade in the afternoon, we were all exhausted. It made us rethink our plans on our next trip, which is why we always go to a water park now on our first full day. My advice for your first day is to just take it easy, drink plenty of water and eat regularly to keep your energy levels up. If you are all feeling the exhaustion, just go back to your resort, maybe lounge by the pool for an hour or two. You don’t have to get everything done in a day.

Make use of the My Disney Experience Mobile App

On our first trip in 2007, this app didn’t exist but ever since it launched in 2012, it has been an essential tool for holiday planning and I highly recommend you download it as soon as possible. Here are some of the features the app includes

Buy theme park tickets wherever you are

Book, amend or cancel dining reservations (cancellations require 24 hour’s notice to avoid being charged)

Select and amend Fastpass+ experiences

Share your itinerary with family & friends. This is a great tool if you are going as a large group, all with your own booking and Disney accounts.

Manage resort reservations, tickets, MagicBands and cards.

Other useful features include being able to check attraction wait times on the go, find character greeting locations and times, search for firework and parade times, play a Disney Parks game to interact with your surroundings, browse restaurant menus and place mobile orders at select quick service restaurants. Disney have also recently added a Get Directions function, to help people to navigate the parks. This is a great new feature, which is particularly useful for first timers who have never experienced the size of the parks and not had chance to fully explore.

Use the Memory Maker/Photopass photographers

I can’t say enough how much I wish we had taken advantage of the Disney photographers on our earlier trips to Disney World. The Memory Maker is included in our holiday package when we book, but even if it wasn’t I would definitely pay for it. I don’t enjoy having my photo taken and prefer to be taking the photos instead, but it is nice to have family photos so as much as I dislike having my photo taken, we decided last year that we would try to get as many photos as possible together on our holiday. Every time we walked in to a park, we would keep an eye out for the Photopass photographers and get in the queue to have some photos. It’s so easy with the MagicBands because the photographer will just scan your band and the photo goes straight to your My Disney Experience App for you to view and download. We have managed to get some wonderful photos and I am so pleased that we now have family photos, that we can keep in our photo album. We have photos in front of Cinderella Castle, Spaceship Earth, The Tree of Life and many other locations throughout the park. You can even get ‘Magic Shots’, which are cute, entertaining virtual shots featuring various Disney characters depending on the park and location. We have photos with Tinkerbell, Jack Jack from Incredibles and Figment, to name a few. You will end up with amazing photos, so make sure you use this.

Select your Fastpass+ experiences as soon as you possibly can

Disney World has loads of amazing rides to experience, but some of them are extremely popular and the wait times can be really long at times, especially new rides. On the recent opening of Toy Story Land, I had heard that the wait times for the Slinky Dog Dash were up to 3 hours long! Queuing for long periods of time is just horrible and if you have children with you, it’s even more difficult because you must consider they may get hungry or need to use the bathroom. Therefore, Disney’s Fastpass+ is a great service to use. You can select up to 3 rides per person, per day and skip the long queues. With Fastpass+ you just go to the ride within your time slot, go straight to the Fastpass entrance and join a much shorter queue; sometimes you can even get straight on the ride if you’re lucky. If you are staying on a Disney Resort, you will be able to select your Fastpass+ experiences up to 60 days before your arrival date. If you’re not staying on a Disney resort you will be able to select them up to 30 days before your arrival date. Just make sure you have your Disney account set up and your tickets are linked to your account. The Fastpass queues save us so much time & we always make sure we get ours booked asap, so that we have less time queuing and more time exploring the parks.

Book Dining reservations asap

If you’re not bothered about where you eat each night and are happy to just wait for a table to become available, then you probably don’t need to worry about booking dining reservations. But if you like to eat at a similar time each day and/or want to try a specific restaurant or character dining experience, then you need to book as soon as your reservation window opens, which is 180 days before your arrival date. Some of the restaurants and character dining experiences are so popular they get booked up as soon as the reservation window opens, so make sure you know your dates and get on the phone or on the Disney Experience app straight away.

Don’t go there thinking you will be able to see/do everything

We have been to WDW 11 times now and still find new things to see and do on every holiday. We used to rush around the parks and resorts, wanting to try and get on every ride, go swimming every day, eat ice cream, see all the parades and fireworks shows and still find time to eat. But then we realised that by rushing around, we were not only tiring ourselves out, but we were also missing out on some of the smaller attractions around the parks, like the street performers, the attention to detail on the buildings, the photo opportunities and just soaking up the atmosphere. So, we now take it slowly and don’t let it bother us too much if we miss out on a ride or don’t get to see the parade that day. There is so much to do in WDW that you will never get bored, so just take your time and enjoy every minute of your time there.

So that’s all the major things that I wish we knew on our first trip, but I do have some other tips I’d like to share that will hopefully help you to make the most of your holiday.

Use the Disney transportation system but do make sure you allow for extra travelling time in case of delays or busy periods.

Use the baby swap on the rides if you want to experience rides but have small children.

To enjoy slightly quieter crowds, get to the parks before they open so you’re among the first to get into the park.

If you are staying on a Disney resort, make sure you get any Disney merchandise that you purchase sent straight to your resort, so you don’t have to carry it around with you all day.
