A lot of time, people who don’t climb mountains assume is about this great heroic sprint for the summit, and somehow this great ego-driven ambition. But actually it’s the reverse. It’s about supplication and sacrifice and humility, when you go to these mountains. It’s not so much a celebration of oneself but the eradication of one’s self-consciousness. And so on these walks you lose yourself, you become a vessel of energy in harmony hopefully with your environment. One thrives on enthusiasm, curiosity, humility.
Julian Sands
I was saddened to read that the dead remains of Julian Sands were finally found in the San Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles. I hadn’t realised how deeply immersed he really was in just wearing all weather anorak, a thermos flask of tea, and a laminated Ordinance Map before he set off on an arduous hike or a climb.
As great as a character actor Julian Sands was, he was also an accomplished mountaineer. He once described himself as happiest when “close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning”, climbed all around the world, including the Andes and Indonesia’s Puncak Jaya, the highest mountain on an island and the only place in the country where you can find snow. I know it’s an arduous climb having done it myself. It requires a weeks-long hike through remote jungle and some chasms which can only be crossed by Tyrolean traverse ziplines.
Julian Sands was on his way to completing the dream of most mountaineering aficionados: competing the Seven Summits. It’s a considerable undertaking in every way not just the obvious physical costs but also the average cost of completing all seven which can rack up to £150,000.
Sands had done five - Aconcagua, Puncak Jaya (Oceania), Mont Blanc (Europe), Vinson (Antarctica) and Kilimanjaro (Africa) - and had only had Denali (North America) and Everest (Asia) left.
Sands also took on the Weisshorn in the Swiss Alps. Now this is revealing as any experienced or passionate mountaineer would tell you. The nearby Matterhorn may be more famous, but many mountaineers consider the Weisshorn both more beautiful, with its symmetrical triangular pyramid shape and pure white slopes, and more challenging too, combining a long and serious route with delicate rock pitches and steep snow climbing. I know I do. It’s an incredible climb to experience which I did with some army veteran friends of mine.
Sands death is a tragedy as his passion for mountaineering was inspiring. I was nodding my head when I read that Sands once began a telephone interview by saying, “Right now I’m looking across the North Face of the Eiger towards the Jungfrau. Spectacular!” But then he rang the journalist back several hours later from a bivouac to impress upon him that, though he was climbing the Eiger, he was going up the easier Mittellegi Ridge rather than the feared North Face. “Mountain and climbing folk, and a small percentage of your readers, will know the difference.” Yes, I thought, Sands gets it. I bowled over by his humility and his honesty generously bound up with his joie de vivre. These are the values of real mountaineers in seeking to climb the mountains of the mind.
RIP Julian Sands (1958-2023).

10 steps for booking Kilimanjaro climb and hike
To book a Kilimanjaro climb and hike, start by researching routes like Machame or Lemosho. Next, select a reputable operator, review itineraries, and check availability. Understand costs, prepare your gear, and arrange travel logistics. Finally, confirm your booking and get ready for an unforgettable adventure in Tanzania.
Step 1: Research and Choose Your Climbing Route
The first step in booking your Kilimanjaro climb is to research the various routes available. Popular routes include Machame, Lemosho, and Marangu, each offering different experiences and difficulty levels. Determine which route aligns with your fitness level and schedule. For example, the Machame route is known for its scenic views, while the Marangu route is often referred to as the "Coca-Cola" route for its relative ease.
Consider how this climb will fit into your overall Tanzania safari tour. Many travelers opt to combine the climb with visits to iconic locations like Serengeti National Park or Ngorongoro Crater.
Step 2: Identify a Reputable Tour Operator
Once you’ve chosen your route, the next step is selecting a reputable tour operator. Look for top-rated African safari tour companies that specialize in Kilimanjaro climbs and Tanzania tours. Check online reviews, request recommendations, and ensure the operator has a good safety record.
Reputable companies often offer packages that combine the Kilimanjaro hike with African safari tours, making it easier to plan your entire trip. It’s essential to choose a company that provides experienced guides and adequate support during the climb.
Step 3: Review Itineraries and Packages
After identifying potential tour operators, review their itineraries and African safari packages. Most operators will provide detailed descriptions of their Kilimanjaro climbs, including day-by-day plans, accommodation types, and meals included.
Additionally, see if they offer any Tanzania safari options following the climb. Many operators feature packages that include safaris to iconic locations like Serengeti and Ngorongoro, along with options for staying at some of the best lodges in Tanzania.
Step 4: Consider Combined Packages
For those interested in maximizing their experience, consider booking an Africa vacation package that includes both the Kilimanjaro climb and a Tanzania safari. These combined packages often provide better value and a smoother transition from climbing to safari.
Incorporating a Kilimanjaro hike with a safari to Kenya or a trip to Zanzibar can also enhance your travel experience. Look for packages that allow flexibility in your itinerary, enabling you to explore more of East Africa.
Step 5: Check Availability and Book in Advance
Once you’ve chosen your desired tour and operator, check availability for your preferred dates. The best month to visit Tanzania for climbing Kilimanjaro typically falls between January and March or June to October.
Booking in advance is crucial, especially during peak climbing seasons. Many travelers also prefer to combine their Kilimanjaro climb with a 10-day safari, which can book up quickly. Secure your spot early to avoid disappointment.
Step 6: Prepare for Your Climb
Preparation is key to a successful Kilimanjaro hike. Your tour operator will likely provide a packing list, which may include essential gear like hiking boots, warm clothing, and a sleeping bag.
Additionally, consider physical training to ensure you’re fit for the climb. Many operators recommend a training program that includes hiking and cardiovascular exercises. This preparation will also help you enjoy your Tanzania safari tour afterward.
Step 7: Arrange Travel Logistics
Next, arrange your travel logistics, including flights to Tanzania. Determine where to fly into Tanzania; Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the most common entry point for climbers.
If your tour includes a safari afterward, check if the operator arranges transportation from the airport to the start of the hike. Some tour companies provide transfers, while others may require you to book separately.
Step 8: Understand the Costs
Understanding the costs involved in your Kilimanjaro climb and Tanzania safari tour is crucial for budgeting. Inquire about the total cost of the climb, including permits, guides, and accommodations.
For a full Kilimanjaro hike, prices can range from $1,500 to $3,000 per person, depending on the route and operator. If you’re adding a safari, costs will vary based on the duration and luxury level of accommodations. Generally, African safari packages can range from $500 to $3,000 or more, depending on the inclusions and destinations.
Step 9: Prepare for Your Tanzania Safari Tour
After your Kilimanjaro climb, you’ll likely transition to your Tanzania safari tour. Prepare for this leg of your journey by researching the best places to stay in Kruger National Park or Serengeti hotels, depending on your itinerary.
Familiarize yourself with activities available during your safari, such as game drives and cultural experiences. Ensure you have the necessary gear, like binoculars and a camera, to capture the wildlife and landscapes.
Step 10: Enjoy Your Adventure
Finally, once everything is booked and prepared, it’s time to enjoy your adventure! From the challenge of climbing Kilimanjaro to the thrill of seeing wildlife in their natural habitat during your Tanzania safari, this trip promises to be unforgettable.
Don’t forget to embrace local culture and cuisine during your travels. Whether you’re enjoying a meal in a lodge or exploring local markets, take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich experiences Tanzania has to offer.
Best time for booking Kilimanjaro climb and hike
The best time to book a Kilimanjaro climb and hike is during the dry seasons, typically from January to March and June to October. A safari at Kilimanjaro National Park offers much more than just wildlife viewing. It's an immersive journey into Tanzania’s diverse ecology. As you ascend higher towards the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, the temperatures and landscapes shift, offering different zones teeming with wildlife. In the lower regions, dense rainforests serve as home to Colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and even the elusive leopard. Kilimanjaro National Parks Safari As you ascend, moorlands and alpine deserts reveal unique vegetation such as giant lobelias and groundsels, creating a surreal experience for any traveler.
Besides the magnificent wildlife, Kilimanjaro National Park is an adventure-seeker’s paradise. It draws thousands of climbers each year, eager to conquer Africa’s tallest mountain. Mount Kilimanjaro stands as the world’s tallest free-standing mountain at 5,895 meters, offering one of the most rewarding trekking experiences in the world.
Lake Naivasha National Park: Wildlife and Birdwatcher's Dream
Not too far from Tanzania lies Lake Naivasha National Park, one of Kenya’s premier birdwatching destinations. Nestled in the Great Rift Valley, this freshwater lake provides a serene atmosphere and diverse ecosystems that attract a wide variety of birds and animals. Flamingos, pelicans, and kingfishers frequent the waters, while hippos and giraffes can be spotted wandering along the shores.
Lake Naivasha is a hub for ecotourism, offering activities such as boat rides, guided walks, and even cycling safaris through the nearby Hell's Gate National Park. The mild climate and rich biodiversity make it an attractive spot for both nature lovers and adventure seekers.
The park also houses Crescent Island, a sanctuary where visitors can walk alongside zebras, giraffes, and impalas. It’s a unique, peaceful experience that allows close interaction with the animals in their natural habitat without the confines of a vehicle.
For those planning to visit, it's essential to be aware of the Lake Naivasha National Park Charges. Entrance fees for foreign tourists are typically around $30 USD, though this may vary depending on the season and type of activity. For locals and East African residents, the fees are much lower. Additional costs may include boat rides and guided tours, but the breathtaking scenery and tranquil atmosphere make every penny worth it.
Bwindi National Park in Uganda: The Land of Mountain Gorillas
Further west in Uganda, another stunning park awaits—the Bwindi National Park in Uganda. Renowned for its mountain gorillas, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most important biodiversity regions in Africa. The dense forests of Bwindi house over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts.
A gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi is truly unparalleled. Visitors can hike through the thick, mist-covered forest, guided by expert trackers to observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat. The park’s rugged terrain and diverse plant life offer a rich backdrop, while the sight of a gorilla family lounging, feeding, or playing together is a memory that lasts a lifetime.
Bwindi is also home to numerous bird species, including the African green broadbill and Shelley’s crimsonwing, making it a haven for birdwatchers. The forest's rich ecosystem also supports other primates, forest elephants, and a variety of small mammals.
Though gorilla trekking permits can be pricey (often around $700 per person for foreign tourists), the unique opportunity to witness mountain gorillas up close in Bwindi National Park in Uganda makes it well worth the investment.

I've been coming up with my own scene ideas for a story with characters based HEAVILY on the MLP mane 6 and thought they made really sweet prompts, so I'm sharing them! Lmk if ya use em, I'd love to read it :D Today I'll be doing...
Vacation Themed Prompts!
Packing
- One character is over-packing and fussing about what they'll need. They've packed multiple suitcases, full of whatever's relevant to the character! Maybe clothes for a particularly fashionable character or lots of medical supplies for a particularly anxious character?
- One character hasn't even packed yet and they leave in 15 minutes, but they insist it'll be alright and go on to pack very basic items. Later on, they end up realizing they forgot something important! Perhaps a bathing suit, sunscreen, underwear, toothpaste, etc.?
- One character is only packing survival essentials as if the apocalypse will begin the moment they step foot out of the house...
- One character has mostly just packed "fun" things, leaving behind several necessary items!
- One character finds they don't have room to pack their comfort item. What are they going to do?
Road Trip/Plane Flight
- (Road trip) The characters start arguing over what music to play or what food to get.
- (Road trip) The car breaks down in the middle of nowhere!
- (Road trip) The passengers are singing songs and playing road trip games very loudly and obnoxiously, much to the annoyance of the driver. "Punch buggy, no punch-backs!!" and "Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we--"
- (Road trip) The characters have quite a bit of trouble trying to read a map and end up so, so lost...
- (Road trip) The characters need to find a place to sleep for the night, what do they do? Oh I can smell the "not enough beds" trope from miles away...
- (Plane flight) A baby is crying on the flight, how do the characters react?
- (Plane flight) There's a bit of turbulence and Character A freaks out, having to be comforted by Character B.
- (Plane flight) One of the characters gets airsick.
- (Plane flight) Airline food sucks, write about that. Idk I've never been on a plane HELP
Camping
- The characters go fishing, but one keeps whining about how long it's taking and scaring away the fish, one can't get the line untangled, and/or one keeps pulling up trash.
- The characters play capture the flag!
- The characters go hiking. One keeps pointing out all the cool wildlife while one is worried about getting muddy and sunburnt and attracting bugs. Perhaps one trips and the other has to carry them back to the tent?
- The characters roast s'mores, sing songs, and tell spooky stories by the campfire, cuddling together for comfort and warmth as they listen to the tale of the local ghost that haunts the forest.
- The characters go kayaking and one tries to stand on the kayak, causing them both to tip over into the water! Now they're sopping wet and cold :(
Disney
- A few characters argue over the best way to get the sword out of the stone in fantasyland
- "A coke here costs HOW MUCH?”
- One of the characters is nervous about meeting a mascot
- “I dare you to drink the water in small world”
- Which character would get more excited about certain animals on Kilimanjaro Safari?
- A ride breaks down with the characters on it!
- Character A learns not to ride rollercoasters with Character B anymore after Character B vomits on them.
- The lines are sooo long... what do your characters do? Do they try to kill time somehow or try to evade the lines?
- A character has a breakdown due to all the noise :(
Beach Day
- Building a sand castle! Who can do it better?
- One character just tans and reads in the sun while everyone else is having fun, despite being encouraged several times to join them.
- While swimming, a character thinks they see a shark and panics!
- Someone's at the beach with a metal detector for some reason.
- Searching for seashells :) Can you really hear the ocean in them?
- Someone finds a note in a bottle in the water! What does it say?
- Playing beach ball!
- A moonlit stroll along the shore... lol
- What if one character has a fear of water?

Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa, making it one of the seven summits. Here are the seven summits in order from highest to lowest.
⛰Asia: Everest (29,035’/8850m)
🏔South America: Aconcagua (22,834’/6960m)
🏔North America: Denali (20,310’/6,190m)
🏔Africa: Kilimanjaro (19,340’/5895m)
⛰Europe: Elbrus (18,513’/5642m)
⛰Oceania: Carstensz Pyramid (16,023’/4884m)
Kilimanjaro is very popular with both experienced hikers and first time adventurers because it is considered to be the easiest of the seven summits. Scaling the mountain requires no technical skills or equipment, such as rope, harness, crampons or ice axe. Therefore, it is a hiking or “walk up” peak, not a mountaineering or climbing peak.

Experiencing an African safari is a dream for many travelers seeking adventure and a connection with nature. However, the costs associated with these unforgettable journeys can vary significantly based on several factors. Understanding what influences the price of an African safari is essential for planning your trip, especially if you are considering popular destinations like Tanzania.
When considering how much an African safari will set you back, it's important to note that prices can range widely. Daily rates for safaris typically fall into three categories: budget, mid-range, and luxury. Budget safaris can start around $250 per person per day for shared camping experiences, making them ideal for travelers looking to save money while still enjoying the beauty of the African wilderness. Mid-range safaris, which typically cost around $450 per day, offer a balance between comfort and cost, featuring comfortable lodges or tented camps with more amenities than budget options. For those seeking a more indulgent experience, luxury safaris start at $600 per day and can soar up to $1,500 per day for high-end accommodations, gourmet meals, and exclusive experiences.
The length of your safari plays a crucial role in determining the total cost. Most travelers opt for a 5-day itinerary as a standard starting point. However, longer safaris often provide better value for money, as the daily rates may decrease slightly with extended bookings. Another significant factor influencing safari costs are the park fees associated with visiting renowned national parks, such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. These fees can comprise a substantial portion of your overall expenses, so it’s essential to check for the latest fees for your chosen parks.
The type of accommodation you select will also dramatically influence your daily rate. From basic campsites to luxurious lodges with stunning views, the options are vast. Researching these options ahead of time will help you find accommodations that meet your budget while still providing an enjoyable safari experience. Additionally, while planning your African safari, it’s important to factor in additional costs that may arise. Many safari packages offer cultural experience tours, allowing you to engage with local communities and learn about their traditions; these tours can vary widely in price depending on the activities included.
For those interested in adventure beyond the safari, hiking Mount Kilimanjaro is a popular addition to many itineraries. This activity can significantly increase your total expenses, so it's worth budgeting accordingly. Moreover, tipping is customary in many African countries, especially for safari guides and camp staff. It’s advisable to set aside some funds for tips, which can add to your overall budget.
Tanzania is often considered one of the best places in the world for safaris, thanks to its diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes. The Serengeti National Park, known for its incredible predator density and vastness, is a must-visit for any safari enthusiast. Prices for safaris in Tanzania can start from $250 to $350 per person per night, excluding international flights and tips, making it a competitive choice for travelers. Similarly, Kenya offers excellent safari experiences, particularly in the Masai Mara, known for its wildlife migrations. Prices for safaris in Kenya can mirror those in Tanzania, providing travelers with multiple options.
South Africa presents a different safari experience, featuring well-established national parks like Kruger National Park. Here, you can find a range of safari options, from budget to luxury, catering to various types of travelers. Prices can vary, but it’s possible to find good value packages that include accommodation and park fees.
When searching for the best African safari packages, consider working with reputable local tour operators. These companies often provide better rates and more personalized experiences than larger international travel agents. Reading reviews and seeking recommendations can help you find the best options tailored to your needs. Additionally, the best time to visit Africa for a safari can also impact costs. Peak seasons, such as during wildlife migrations, tend to be more expensive, while the shoulder seasons may offer more budget-friendly options without sacrificing wildlife viewing opportunities.
In summary, the cost of an African safari is influenced by numerous factors, including the type of safari, duration, and included amenities. By understanding these variables and planning accordingly, you can create an unforgettable experience that aligns with your budget. Whether you choose a budget-friendly camping safari or indulge in a luxury lodge experience, the memories made on an African safari are truly priceless. Start your adventure by researching different safari options and connecting with local operators to find the perfect match for your travel dreams.

The Marangu route, also known as the "Coca-Cola" route, is the oldest, most well-established route on Kilimanjaro. This is the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations in lieu of camping. There are 60 bunk beds each at Mandara and Kibo Huts, and 120 bunk beds at Horombo Hut. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required. The huts have communal dining halls and basic washrooms, ranging from flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts to long drop toilets and buckets of water at Kibo Hut. Many favor Marangu because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and direct path. However, the short time frame of the route makes Altitude Acclimatization fairly difficult. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast. Marangu is unfortunately less scenic than the other routes because the ascent and descent are along the same path. It is also the most crowded route for that reason.
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut Elevation (ft): 6,046 ft to 8,858 ft Distance: 8 km Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Rain Forest Hut: Mandara Hut. We head to the Marangu Gate for the necessary formalities before beginning our trek. The trail climbs through a tropical rain forest near the upper edge of the forest line, where we sometimes see playful blue monkeys. The trail then widens to expose beautiful hillsides until we reach Mandara Hut.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut Elevation (ft): 8,858 ft to 12,205 ft Distance: 12 km Hiking Time: 6-8 hours Habitat: Heath / Moorland Our second day on the trail starts up with a steep ascent through the forest and opens into high moorland. If the sky is clear, we might get our first views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. Those two volcanic peaks make up the summit of Kilimanjaro.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Mawenzi Hut to Horombo Hut Elevation (ft): 12,205 ft to 14,160 ft to 12,205 ft Distance: 10 km Hiking Time: 3-5 hours Habitat: Heath This extra day is used for Adaptation. We hike towards or all the way to Mawenzi Hut and back. The unique landscape offers motivating views of Kibo and Mawenzi.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut Elevation (ft): 12,205 ft to 15,430 ft Distance: 10 km Hiking Time: 6-8 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert On this day we climb gently, then cross the lunar desert of the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach our campsite, which sits at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. Once at Camp, we rest and enjoying an early dinner and prepare for summit day.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Point to Horombo Hut Elevation (ft): 15,430 ft to 19,341 ft to 12,205 ft Distance: 22 km Hiking Time: 10-13 hours Habitat: Arctic We wake up in the middle of the night and begin the final push to reach the Roof of Africa. The trail to Gilman’s Point is very steep, and the ascent will be slow and steady. From Gilman’s, it is a traverse along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. We stay at the summit for a short time, to take photos and enjoy the views, before retracing our steps all the way back to Horombo Hut.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate Elevation (ft): 12,205 ft to 6,046 ft Distance: 20 km Hiking Time: 5-7 hours Habitat: Rain Forest A long trek is in store for today, however it is mostly downhill. Once we reach the park headquarters, there at Marangu Gate, we pick up our certificate, that proves our achievement, and catch our vehicle transfer to the Hotel in Moshi.

HAPPY NEW YEAR - be safe, be healthy, be kind
2023 has given me some incredible experiences – I’ve climbed to the top of Kilimanjaro with a group of young people, and I flown high in the sky on a biplane doing exhilarating aerobatics above siren on a beautiful summers day. I’ve also done loads of little training, hikes and bike rides to make sure that my fitness levels were adequate to cope with Kilimanjaro and the effects of altitude.
I have still got lots to do as I have still not achieved my goal of £50,000 towards the cost of a mole mapping scanner which can be used for early diagnosis of Skin Cancer. Early detection is critical as it can massively increase the prognosis for people.
Watch this space in 2024 as I decide what my next challenges are. I have a couple in mind, but I have not yet decided.
Here is a link to my website so you can keep track of my exploits in 2024

Bring it all on!!
