Homosassa Inshore Fishing Report with Captain Toney: Where did the Scallops Go?
Just saying that as a fourth generation native from Old Homosassa, I've had some fun family days of scalloping. Our families are all related, our family tree is like a palm tree in that we don't have many limbs. Capt. Fred Lyles had a stone crab vessel called the Miss Pat and every summer he would load up the boat with Homosassa families and we would run Rock Island Channel in a stone crab boat and anchor in 5 feet of water northwest of St. Martins Keys. Most of the adults would stay onboard and us kids would work it over, bringing scallops to the boat. All the wonderful sea life we would see and experience while seeing who could get the most scallops and jumping off the top of the wheelhouse was a treat! To this day I'm still impressed with Capt. Fred (I still call him Mr. Freddy) - how he could run in with that big boat on low water when the one marker was called the Stop Sign and know it like the back of his hand to prevent from running aground. With all this being said, I believe the south end of the Big Bend scallop fishery is being over-harvested. I have been with it all my life and I know that there are good years, bad years, and closed years. After snorkeling and seeing Citrus County's pristine grass and hard-bottom flats, it's hard to believe I would only pick up a scallop about every fifteen minutes. I used 19 gallons of fuel to try areas from Pine Island Beach all the way to west of Ozello with clients and only got 3. It was a hard pill for me to swallow, and in my mind, I wished it was a fishing trip because I usually can make something happen; but in this case, I could not. Incoming tide this weekend will be in the morning and that's good for catching some redfish. Tsavo west national park location
Nestled in the southeastern region of Kenya, Tsavo West National Park is a gem of natural beauty and diverse wildlife. Spanning an impressive 9,065 square kilometers, this park forms part of the larger Tsavo National Park, which is divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West. The park's unique location and varied landscapes make it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and safari adventurers.
Location and Accessibility
Tsavo West National Park is situated in Kenya's Taita-Taveta County, bordering Tanzania to the southwest. The park is approximately 240 kilometers southeast of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, and about 200 kilometers northwest of Mombasa, the country's coastal city. This strategic location makes Tsavo West accessible from both major cities, catering to both inland and coastal travelers.
Getting There by Road
One of the most popular ways to reach Tsavo West is by road. The Nairobi-Mombasa highway (A109) runs close to the park, making it a convenient route for visitors. From Nairobi, the journey takes about 4 to 5 hours, while from Mombasa, it takes around 3 to 4 hours. The main entrance to Tsavo West, the Mtito Andei Gate, is located off this highway. Other entry gates include the Chyulu Gate, the Tsavo Gate, and the Maktau Gate.
Getting There by Air
For those seeking a quicker option, there are several airstrips within and near Tsavo West that accommodate charter flights. The most commonly used airstrips are the Kilaguni, Finch Hattons, and Ziwani airstrips. These provide easy access to various lodges and camps within the park. Flying from Nairobi or Mombasa takes about an hour, offering an aerial view of Kenya's stunning landscapes.
Geographic Features and Highlights
Tsavo West is renowned for its dramatic and diverse landscapes. Here are some key geographic features and attractions that make the park stand out:
The Chyulu Hills
Located in the northern part of the park, the Chyulu Hills are a range of volcanic mountains covered in lush green vegetation. These hills offer excellent opportunities for hiking and provide panoramic views of the surrounding savannah.
Mzima Springs
One of the most popular attractions in Tsavo West, Mzima Springs is a series of crystal-clear springs fed by underground rivers originating from the Chyulu Hills. Visitors can enjoy guided walks along the springs, where they might spot hippos, crocodiles, and various fish species. The underwater viewing chamber at Mzima Springs offers a unique perspective on the aquatic life.
Shetani Lava Flow
A stark and fascinating landscape, the Shetani Lava Flow is a vast expanse of black volcanic rock formed by lava from eruptions hundreds of years ago. The name "Shetani," meaning "devil" in Swahili, reflects the local legend that the lava flow was created by the devil himself. This area is ideal for exploring the geological history of the region.
Rhino Sanctuary
Tsavo West is home to a protected rhino sanctuary, a significant conservation effort aimed at protecting the endangered black rhino. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the sanctuary's efforts and potentially spot these elusive creatures in their natural habitat.
Lake Jipe
Located on the Kenya-Tanzania border, Lake Jipe is a serene body of water that attracts a variety of bird species and other wildlife. It’s a great spot for birdwatching and offers boat rides for close-up encounters with the lake’s flora and fauna.
Climate and Best Time to Visit
Tsavo West experiences a semi-arid climate with warm temperatures throughout the year. The best time to visit is during the dry seasons, from June to October and January to February. During these months, wildlife congregates around water sources, making it easier to spot animals. The wet seasons, from March to May and November to December, bring lush landscapes but can make some roads difficult to navigate.
Conclusion
Tsavo West National Park’s strategic location, combined with its diverse landscapes and rich wildlife, makes it a captivating destination for any safari enthusiast. Whether you’re exploring the volcanic Chyulu Hills, marveling at the clear waters of Mzima Springs, or tracking rhinos in the sanctuary, Tsavo West promises an unforgettable adventure. Its accessibility from both Nairobi and Mombasa ensures that this wilderness is within reach for travelers seeking an authentic African safari experience.

The boat charters usually come equipped with various amenities, providing a comfortable and enjoyable experience for passengers as they venture out to the sandbars. Once at the sandbar, visitors have the opportunity to swim, relax, and take in the breathtaking surroundings. The shallow waters make it ideal for families with children to splash around safely, and the sandy terrain invites activities like beach games and picnics.
Furthermore, sandbar charters often offer additional activities, such as snorkeling, paddleboarding, or even fishing, providing guests with a diverse range of experiences. These excursions also give participants the chance to witness spectacular sunsets over the water, creating unforgettable moments that showcase the magical charm of Key West's coastal landscape.
Overall, sandbar charters in Key West offer a unique and immersive way to experience the region's natural beauty, allowing visitors to connect with the serene environment and enjoy the pleasures of island life in this tropical paradise.

Southern Access Charters offers the best Venice LA fishing charters you'll ever experience! We have inshore fishing and near shore rig fishing trips on the fascinating waters of Venice, Louisiana. Here, the Mississippi River spills out into the Gulf of Mexico, producing diverse and twisting bayous, ponds and rivers that are home to a large number of exciting fish species, and you’ll have the chance to explore it all.
Step aboard the 24’ Key West bay boat, built specifically to peruse these waters. Powered by a 300 HP Suzuki outboard motor, featuring a GPS, fish-finder, VHF radio and radar, you’ll head to the most productive spots with ease. Once you get there, the wireless trolling motor will hold at any location while I tend to all your needs. Baiting, casting, changing lines, netting fish, taking pictures, the most fun and fellowship. Rather it’s catch and release or filling up the fish box, you will never be the same after a fishing trip like this. Ice box space for drinks and lunches and a huge fish box to fill.
Ladies, don’t worry about a potty, we have one aboard. Up to 4 anglers are welcome to make yourselves comfortable aboard, taking advantage of the comfortable seating and the T-top that provides shade throughout the day. You’ll be handed the toughest Ugly Stick rods with the latest Daiwa BG commercial reels.
Strong braided 50lb test to power in those 30-40 plus lb bull redfish. To 100lb test for rig fishing rods to crank in nice red snapper. Kids will be able to handle fish too with smaller rods and reels they can handle. Four horseman popping corks, artificial lures and dead bait provided. You can also fish with live bait at an additional cost to take in some of the biggest hauls of trout and reds when the bite is slow on dead bait.
Try a range of methods as you look to attract the bite of a range of exciting and delicious fish. Try bottom rig fishing around oil platforms and underwater structures as you target Red Snapper, Mangrove Snapper, Redfish, Speckled Trout, sheepshead, Black Drum, Cobia and much more, on what promises to be a fun-filled trip in the Gulf of Mexico. Near shore fishing the marshes and cane reeds on a popping cork for schools of redfish, speckled trout and flounder. The rock jetties at the end of the Mississippi River where it spills into the Gulf of Mexico is my favorite spot.
With the trolling motor on anchor mode the fish box will fill up with redfish, sheepshead, drumfish, speckled trout, white trout, triple tail, Spanish mackerel and more. Everything you need for a productive day out awaits you on board. All you need to do is bring some drinks and snacks, and settle in for a thrilling fishing experience with Southern Access Charters. Come and discover the bays, bayous and Gulf of Mexico in true Louisiana style!

February 9 - Molly D has been docked in Key West for 9 days. Weather has been in the upper 70s most days. Sun has been plentiful as has been the wind. No complaints. Our friends from Niantic left last Friday. Our boat friends Lee and Allison from Southport, NC are here in Key West. Summer neighbors Tom and Robyn are here for a long weekend. We have dinner plans tomorrow night. A sailboat neighbor came in on Tuesday and had extreme difficulty docking due to strong winds (and a crappy boat design). Today he delivered a bottle of wine today as a way of saying thanks for our understanding as the bow of his boat compressed our dinghy while trying to dock. No harm done to the dinghy or Molly D.
A “thank you” bottle of wine in an insulated bag.
Today we had our first manatee sighting in the marina. A couple of boaters who are not familiar with Florida’s regulations regarding manatees gave the manatee drinks of fresh water from the dock. Another boater set them straight, as there is a fine for giving fresh water to manatees.
Hello manatee!
Some things to know about Key West. Chickens and roosters are everywhere. They poop everywhere. Shoes will need to be thrown away after walking the sidewalks. Roosters start their day between 4 and 5. Therefore, your day begins at that time as well.
Poop covered sidewalk
The reason for the poop on the sidewalk.
It’s best to walk down Duval Street before 11. Crowds are light. During crowded times, walking parallel streets will get you where you want to go without having to dodge people on the sidewalk. B.O’s Fish Wagon serves excellent fish and the best hot dogs ever. The hot dogs are deep fried and served on soft, tasty Cuban bread. Despite being deep fried, there’s NO grease residue in the bun!
Deep fried hot dog from B.I’d Fish Wagon
Chickens roam freely at B.O’s. And everywhere else in Key West
The water here is beautiful!
Southernmost Beach
Don’t pay big bucks for a sunset cruise. There are many places along the waterfront to see the sunset for free. In the time we’ve been here there has been one night where the sunset could be seen clearly. All other nights cloud cover interfered.
Perfect sunset.
Don’t waste your time going to Mallory Square for the sunset. Too crowded. Years ago the sunset acts were great—jugglers, the cat man, fire eater, escape artist, bagpiper, magician, strong man, musicians and mimes. The acts now are very lame and there are about a quarter of them that are holdouts and they are not very good. There are good things in Key West such as the farmer’s market on Thursdays at Truman Waterfront park.
Farmer’s market fruit and vegetables.
The waterfront is full of activity such as sailing trips, fishing charters, jet ski tours, parasailing, pleasure boats coming and going, cruise ships, people in their dinghies coming ashore from anchorages and there are many fine restaurants from which to choose. There are many museums to visit such as the Hemingway House, Key West Lighthouse, Harry Truman’s Little White House, the KW Aquarium, the Shipwreck Museum and Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum to name a few. There is also the Conch Train tour and a Ghost Tour. Warm water, blue skies, gentle breezes—all is great!

Homosassa Inshore Fishing Report with Captain Toney: Fishing the Foul Area of the St. Martins Keys
I am looking forward to some decent weather that is enjoyable to fish in, as we had earlier in the week. When the wind calms down, one of my favorite springtime fisheries is west of the St. Martins Keys in theFoul Area. There are many natural rock piles and structures scattered over miles of 6- to 10-feet of water. Many species of fish like trout, spanish mackerel, bluefish, sea bass, pompano, jacks, and ladyfish concentrate here because of the abundant shrimp. Many times I've unhooked a trout and that fish is filled to the gills with shrimp. The fishing is fairly simple. How I work this area is to set up a drift to try to intersect as many rocks as possible that are marked on my GPS. If you are new to this then drifting and finding rocks on a calm day is part of the work it takes to become successful. I use a 1/8 oz. jig head with a MirrOlure LIL John for bait. I like using this soft plastic because it resembles a shrimp bouncing along the grass. Having a few different colors of LIL Johns helps because the color that the fish eat can change daily according to the conditions. Once my anglers catch a few fish in a row I'll stay in that location byusing a marking buoy or GPS. Etiquette for fishing in the Foul Area is easy, and, if followed, all anglers can put some fish in the box. When approaching the fleet of boats, slow down and put the motor in neutral, then study the drift andline up with the rest of the fleet accordingly. I try not to anchor unless it's on a rock and I'm targeting snappers or grunts. After drifting through the hot spot then I do my best to take a wide berth around the other anglers before setting up another drift. Incoming tide will be in the afternoon this weekend.
