I want a PMD game that's mixed with Animal Crossing.
I want to be a cute little pokemon and go around my town and talk to the Kecleon NPC at the market when shopping for cute furniture. I want to buy custom scarves and bandanas from a Leavanny. I want to beat up Dusknoir with my net. I want to talk to pokemon that move in and out of plots of land depending on whether or not you befriend them. I want to become besties with a partner pokemon who has dreams of bringing their dusty hometown back to its former glory. I want to beat up Dusknoir with my net. I want to enjoy the worldbuilding without threats of curses, being erased from history, manifestations of evil trying to destroy all that is good and holy, unbelievably unfair wages for my work, etc. I want to beat up Dusknoir with my net. I want to beat up Dusknoir with my net. I want to beat up Dusknoir with my net---
#dusknoir can have some gentle bullying. as a treat#i love him. but he needs a good smack now and then. The Start of Team Soup (pt. 3)
So. It's been almost two months since I've done any writing. Oops. Yeah, I didn't really do any in October and I only really started working on this in November. My job has been unexpectedly super draining on my creative juices! So I focused in on just one project to work on, and that ended up being the PMD AU. I definitely want to work on other things I have on the back burner, but I think for now, get used to seeing these funky little critters.
Word Count: 3.1k

(Please reblog! I like reading tags :])
That night… Clare had a strange dream.
She was in a multicolored space, sleeping but she could still sense everything around her.
“... ... … … … … Where… am I…? This… is a dream, right…?”
Suddenly, Clare could sense someone else with her. But they were very faint.
“Hello? Who are you? Do I know you? Should I know you?”
They attempted to speak, but it was barely audible with how far away they were and how soft their voice was.
And already Clare was beginning to wake up.
…
The Chikorita sat up in her bed.
“I dreamt something,” she muttered to herself. “But I can’t remember what it was about…” She stared at the basket full of Apples and berries for a while. Finally, she shook her head. “I shouldn’t be worrying about that right now,” she internally decided. “Let’s just worry about rescue work for now.”
She went outside to check her Mailbox. She found it was void of anything new, so she decided to read the newspaper Giovanni was telling her about yesterday.
“You’re up early.” Peering over the paper, Clare found Giovanni looking at her with a small smile. “Anything in the Mailbox?”
“Nope.”
The Squirtle sighed. “Yeah, I kinda figured… We’re still really new to this.” Then he perked up. “Hey, why not head to Pokemon Square? It’s a super helpful hub for rescue teams, and the Pelipper Post Office usually has jobs posted outside.”
With no better ideas, Clare followed behind Giovanni.
…
Luckily, the Square wasn’t far at all. They followed a short path and crossed a small wooden bridge over a creek. Giovanni pointed out all the different shops: two Kecleon ran the item shop (one sold general items, and the other sold Orbs and Technical Machines), Persian ran the bank, Gulpin ran the Link Shop—
“Link Shop?”
“Gulpin can link moves together. If moves are linked, you can use them at the same time! Just, ask Gulpin if you wanna know more; he explains it better than me.”
Kangaskhan ran a storage shop.
“If you store any items with Ms. Kangaskhan, they’ll never get lost! It’s super important that we store any items we don’t want to lose with her in case we faint.”
And finally, Makuhita ran the dojo.
“He can help train us or teach us about stuff in dungeons.”
As Giovanni and Clare came back to the town center, he noticed the Chikorita’s eyes darting away from others and using her leaf to hide her face. “Everyone’s super nice here; don’t be so nervous! They just want to help.”
He then started down the east road, Clare following behind. “And down here’s the Pelipper Post Office. They’re super up-to-date on rescue information. We should be able to get some jobs on the bulletin board.” Giovanni began to pluck off some papers from the board.
“…What do you think we should do about the grass?” Clare finally piped up.
“What grass?”
“The dead grass in front of our base. We should probably start thinking about fixing up the whole base, yeah? We can start small with the grass.”
“Hm… Good point. Why don’t we focus on that today instead of a job?”
That was how the team spent the next few days, alternating between repair of their base and rescue offers. It kept them both busy, and it kept Clare’s mind off her strange dreams.
…
One morning, when Clare came out of her house with Giovanni greeting her, the earth began to shake under their feet.
“Eh?”
“What’s going on?!”
They both whipped their heads around to the sound of someone popping out of the dirt.
“Tunnel over here!”
Pop!
“Tunnel over there!”
Pop!
“Tunnels everywhere! Woohoo! Digging is so much fun!” The new arrival-- a Diglett-- cheered and giggled to himself before looking around. “Err, umm… wait, where am I?”
“False alarm,” Giovanni sighed. “No real quakes; just a kid having a blast.”
Diglett whirled around, looking bashful. “Oh my! My apologies! My name is Diglett. I was digging holes around the Pelipper Post Office, so much so that I kept digging all the way here! I’m sorry I ruined your nice place!”
Clare chuckled. “Frankly, it can’t get much worse. Don’t worry about it.”
“Are you saying you forgive me?” The Ground type’s eyes sparkled.
“Yup. Just be careful; most people won’t appreciate holes around their properties. Try not to dig too many, ok Diglett?”
“Of course! Thank you! I’ll still have fun digging, but I’ll make sure to patch up the holes from time to time! Bye-bye!” With that, Diglett dug back down into the hole and disappeared.
“He said that he was digging holes around the Pelipper Post Office. I bet we could get there with this hole now without going through town!” Giovanni jumped in with no hesitation.
“…I’m slightly concerned that you did that with no prodding whatsoever.”
…
Another strange dream. The same multicolored space.
“… … … … … …Back here again.”
Clare sensed another presence. The same one from the last dream. Whoever they were, they were a bit closer this time.
They tried to speak. It was possible to hear them this time, but they were still quiet and unclear. Clare strained to listen.
“Hello? Hello? Can you speak up please?”
Then, the ground rumbled.
“An earthquake? In my dream?”
The ground shook louder and more intensely.
“Oh jeez—! This feels pretty real for a dream.”
The presence vanished, but Clare was too occupied by the ground to notice.
…
When the Chikorita woke up the next morning, she knew her first course of action was asking Giovanni about the ground shaking. If it was real, he would’ve had to feel it too. She stretched out on her bed.
“Uhh… hello?”
Clare jolted up. Was there someone in the house? A quick look around revealed no one.
“Um, hello? You are Clare… correct?”
She stepped out of her bed and looked around again. Still, no one.
“Are… you a ghost?”
“Oh! You can’t see us, of course! How very rude of us!” Clare yelped as a Dugtrio burst out of the ground right underneath her feet; she was thrown back a bit onto her bed. “We’re pleased to meet you. We are Dugtrio.”
“…Charmed.”
“Last night, during the earthquake, our child Diglett was attacked!”
“What? Diglett? Attacked?”
“Yes! He was whisked away to the peak of a tall mountain. We couldn’t possibly climb somewhere so high up. That is why we must call upon your help, Clare. Diglett was abducted by a Pokemon named Skarmory.”
Clare shivered. If the name was anything to go by, this Pokemon would not be pleasant.
“It’s a vilely vicious ruffian!” Dugtrio continued, absolutely not calming Clare’s nerves. “Please do be careful. We need your help! We must go!” And with that, Dugtrio burrowed into the floor, leaving no hole behind.
.........That was so fast, the Grass type barely had the chance to rub the sleep out of her eyes. But Diglett being kidnapped was much more concerning. She had to tell Giovanni immediately: they had a rescue mission.
She darted outside, and Giovanni wasn’t too far behind from the left path. “Mornin’!” He greeted her cheerfully.
“Dude. We’ve gotta go now. We’ve got a real-deal rescue mission.”
“Woah, woah, slow down; you just came outside. What do you mean we have a rescue mission? …I mean, that’s great! But—”
“Yes, it’s true!” A voice came from below. Dugtrio burst out of the ground, and Team Soup was flung backwards. “Our child Diglett was kidnapped! He was taken to Mt. Steel’s summit! Please, we need your help! Bye-bye!” Then the Ground-type went back down, leaving a map behind.
Giovanni blinked at his rescue partner. “Alright. I see what happened now.” A pause. “Wait, Diglett was the kid digging holes around here the other day!”
“Exactly! We gotta go help him!”
“Mt. Steel doesn’t sound real nice though…”
“Rescue team work isn’t always parades and parties; now, c’mon!!”
…
The two stood across from the menacing cave opening of Mt. Steel. They couldn’t see inside at all.
“Here we are,” Clare said simply. “Dugtrio said Diglett was whisked up to the peak of this mountain.”
“That’s right!” A voice from underground jolted the two rescuers for a moment.
“Dugtrio?! You followed us all the way out here? Without telling us?” Giovanni cried.
“Indeed!” The three-headed (three-bodied?) Pokemon emerged violently from the ground, startling the rescue team again. “The peak is the ninth floor! Thank you for helping! Farewell!” He descended as quickly as he came up.
“Er… It’s no problem at all, Dugtrio.”
The two rescuers looked at each other, and nodded. They both knew what had to be done.
Mt. Steel was the biggest challenge Team Soup had faced thus far. The first few floors weren't so bad, but the climb only became more treacherous as the pair went up. The enemies were tougher, but that meant Clare and Giovanni also got stronger in the process. They even learned some new moves (though Giovanni wasn't thrilled about his move only raising his defense while Clare's was poisoning other Pokemon).
...
“...What's our strategy for Skarmory?” The Chikorita asked when they had a little room to breathe.
“What do you mean?”
“Giovanni, Skarmory's a Steel and Flying type. We're at a huge disadvantage here.” Giovanni started to open his mouth to respond. “And before you say, 'Oh, then we'll just hit him as hard as we can', almost all of our moves won't be very effective.”
The Squirtle clamped his mouth closed, looking annoyed that he was read so easily. Then he put a hand to his chin. “Then how about... we POISON him?!” A devious grin flourished on his face.
“Can't. Steel types can't be poisoned.” And it immediately fell off his face. “Our best bet is probably using the items we've collected. We can try to talk him down, but I get the feeling he won't be very chatty.”
“Hey! No matter what, we got this! We've not failed a single mission, and we're not about to start now!”
Clare smiled at Giovanni's optimism. It put her a bit more at ease, even as they were climbing up to the summit.
...
The wind whipped around sharply at the top of Mt. Steel, and the near completely flat ground provided no cover. Square-cut rocks shined like metal in the sun.
“Clare, look! Diglett's over there!” The little Ground-type was secluded on a small ledge, which seemed to be Skarmory's perch. “Hey, are you alright out there?” Giovanni cried out over the wind. “We're here to rescue you, kid!”
“I... I'm scared...” Diglett whimpered.
Suddenly, something shot up from the chasm between Team Soup and Diglett. The rescue team jumped back in surprise as it zipped down to the ledge just as quickly.
This Pokemon was a sleek metallic gray with crimson wings and sharp yellow eyes.
Skarmory.
“You! What do you think you're doing here?!”
“Uh, I just said what we're doing here.” The Squirtle said indignantly. “We're here to rescue Diglett!”
“Skarmory, let him go.” Clare stepped up, trying not to let Giovanni agitate Skarmory further. “Diglett's done nothing wrong.”
“How can you believe that?! This is all their fault! I haven't slept in days because the earthquakes frighten me so! Every night we have them! And it's all because of that brat's ilk running around underground!”
“Well, you're not wrong about the earthquakes; there have been quite a lot. But it would take more than one Diglett to cause something as big as an earthquake, especially if it can be felt all the way up here.”
“You be quiet! We'll fight if you keep that up!”
“It's no use. Skarmory's too angry to listen to us.”
“We'll have to fight it out!” Giovanni got into a fighting pose alongside Clare.
Skarmory let out a shrill cry at the two and the battle began.
Skarmory wasted no time in closing the distance between them, and proceeded to slash and peck at the two with his talons and beak. The two retaliated with their own elemental attacks. Giovanni was mostly successful at taking a brunt of the damage thanks to Withdraw. But with Skarmory using Leer to lower his Defense back down, the combatants were at a stalemate.
Clare kept the team healthy with Oran Berries from their supplies, but they only had two left now. They had to switch strategies and fast.
What did they have? Pecha Berries, Cheri Berries, Blast Seeds... That's it!
"Gio, catch!" Clare called out to her partner as she threw a Blast Seed towards him. The Squirtle caught it and didn't hesitate on shoving it into his mouth.
His face quickly contorted into wide-eyed shock as he covered his mouth with his hands. Skarmory paused for a moment in confusion. But that was just the hesitation the team needed; the Steel-Flying type got blasted in the face from an explosion from Giovanni's mouth.
Skarmory screeched and stumbled back. From that and the team's other attacks, it looked like he had been beaten. ”Grrr... I can't keep up! I'll flee for now!“ The steel bird shot up into the sky once more, crookedly flying away.
It was quiet for a bit before Clare let out a little laugh. “We did it Gio, we did it!!”
“Hey Clare,” The Water-type breathed heavily. “Could you do me a little favor and WARN me next time you DO THAT?!”
”Oh. Yeah.” Now that feeling of pride was pushed down by embarrassment. “Sorry about that; it was the only thing I could think of.“
”...Eh, it's alright. I get it. Water under the bridge. Now let's worry about Diglett.”
The pair walked to the edge of the chasm. Clare looked down for a moment, but quickly shot her head back up. “I can’t see the bottom,” she noted with a scared strain in her voice.
“How do you think we should do this?” Giovanni asked, seemingly oblivious to Clare’s fright. He put a hand up to his chin in thought, then pounded one fist into his palm with a smile. “You can use your vines to stretch me across the gap and I can grab Diglett from there! Then you’d just reel us back in.”
“...I don’t have vines.”
“...You, should have vines. Don’t Grass-types usually have vines?”
“Sure, but not all of them. And I’m pretty sure I’m one without vines.”
There was a long pause.
“Oh Arceus, what are we gonna do.”
An electronic sound from above caught the pair’s attention. Looking up, two Magnemite were floating down to them.
“BZBZBZZ!”
“Oh, hey! You’re the Magnemite from Thunderwave Cave!” Clare tilted her head as the Steel/Electric pair drifted closer. “What are you doing here?”
“WE HEARD WORD OF THIS. WE CAN RESCUE DIGLETT FROM THE SKY. BZBZBZZ!”
“With… your magnets? What would he grab onto? Can he grab on?” The Squirtle quietly talked to himself as the Magnemite flew over the opposite side of the cliff and approached Diglett.
“HOLD ON TO US TIGHT.” “DON’T BE SCARED. WE WON’T MAKE THE MISTAKE OF ZAPPING YOU.”
“Oh… Alright…” It seemed the poor kid had been frozen with fright the whole time. But now with the helpful Magnemite, his nerves calmed a bit.
…
“Ohhh… I was very scared. Maybe because I was up somewhere so high… My feet feel like they’re still walking on air.”
The whole party had descended down the mountain and were huddled outside Team Soup’s rescue base.
Giovanni glanced sideways to Clare with squinted eyes. “...Feet?” He whispered. The Grass-type just shrugged.
“HE HAS THEM? FEET?” The Magnemite attempted to whisper to each other.
“Well, you’re safe and that’s what really matters,” Clare said to the little Ground-type, trying to steer the conversation away from appendages that may or may not exist.
“Yeah! Thank you very much.”
“Oh, you’ve been rescued! Great! Great!”
Everyone paused and whirled around themselves, trying to find this new mystery voice.
“HM? WHAT WAS THAT?” “AM I HEARING VOICES?”
“...Dugtrio?” The Squirtle asked to the ground.
“Whoops! You can’t see us? That’s terribly rude of us!” As predicted, Dugtrio erupted from the earth right next to Giovanni, making him shriek, jump, and nearly crash into Clare. “Hello. Dugtrio here.”
“Oh! Papa!” Diglett chirped.
“Diglett! You had us worried! You’re not hurt?”
“Nope! It was scary, but I’m all right. It’s all thanks to Clare’s team.”
“Thank you for everything. You’re heroes.”
“Thank you, but… You should really be thanking the Magnemite. This rescue would have been impossible without them.” Clare flicked her leaf towards them.
Dugtrio turned to the pair of Steel-Electric types. “Oh, how rude of us! Thank you so much!”
“NO, NO. IT WAS THE ONLY THING TO DO. AND… HOW BOTH OUR EVOLVED FORMS ARE JOINED TRIOS… I FELT A CERTAIN KINSHIP. AFTER ALL, POKEMON MUST HELP EACH OTHER.”
“I’m impressed. Sincerely, thank you.” Dugtrio then looked back at Team Soup. “We must be going. Clare. Giovanni. Thank you. Farewell!”
“Bye!”
With Diglett’s final goodbye, the two Ground-types buried under the soil and zoomed off, leaving behind a few rewards for the rescue team.
“WE’LL BE ON OUR WAY TOO.” Magnemite said.
“Wait, wait, wait; hold on a sec, you two!” Giovanni stepped in front of the two.
“WHAT IS IT?”
“Well, I’ve been standing here thinking we couldn’t have done that last mission without you guys. And we’re probably going to need help like that again.”
“To put it in a less long-winded way: Would you like to join our team?” Clare didn’t fail to notice her partner’s unamused side eye.
“JOIN YOUR TEAM?”
“Yes. We’d love to have you with us. O-Only if you want to, of course! We won’t force you or anything.”
“RESCUE TEAM… THAT SOUNDS FUN!” The Magnemite on the left’s magnets buzzed with excitement.
“BUT… IF YOU NEED US TO RUSH OVER TO RESCUES… WE NEED SOMEWHERE TO LIVE CLOSE BY. IS THERE ANYWHERE WE CAN LIVE IN THIS AREA?” The Magnemite on the right tilted itself at an angle.
“Er… Well…” The Squirtle scratched the back of his head.
“OH… THERE ISN’T… TOO BAD. SORRY, BUT WE CAN’T JOIN YOU. SEE YOU!” Their magnets continued to buzz as the pair left.
“Well, that’s a shame,” Clare said with a sigh. “But they’re right. Team members should live close by so they can leave quickly or we can contact them easily.”
“Then we need to find some real estate that we can use! Then we can start recruiting.”
“How are we gonna do that?”
Giovanni thought about it for a moment, then gained a wide grin and started pushing the Chikorita towards her house. “Let me worry about that! You just get some rest tonight.”
“...Could you try and sound less suspicious when you say that?”
But he was already running off. “See ya tomorrow!”
Clare just huffed.

Still not quite finished with Gates, but I’m nearing the finish line for the main game? I think? So I have some more structured thoughts below.
(Apologies for the length, but... well, that’s part of why I’m putting it under the cut)
Most of the mechanics I think are an improvement on Explorers—and definitely on Rescue Team, since Explorers introduced a lot of improvements (like the way healing items are handled—in Rescue team you had to throw them at your allies, and only the hero could eat them directly from the bag). I like how Gates handles experience for allies left at home, and the way that you can level up individual moves and share them among everyone rather than using a ginseng on a single move for a single pokemon (that I don’t think retains that level up if you forget it but then go and remember it again? I can’t recall that part), and some of the team skills are useful… but the problem is that they are really luck-based in terms of actually acquiring them. I’ve only gotten two so far. Comparatively, IQ skills were very much based on the individual, but also a lot easier to get, allowing for a sort of customization aspect? It allowed more care and a better sense of victory, at least.
The V-wave thing is pretty cool, though, especially when paired with how exp works, even as annoying as I find Victini.
Getting rid of the hunger mechanic is I think positive overall? It does free up some inventory space, which is nice, but it also removes a bit of the puzzle and challenge for some of the longer dungeons—and I can’t help but wonder if the reason they did so is just because of how many dungeon layouts in Gates were comprised of many, many sprawling hallways with tons of intersections and small, unnecessary turns and corners, but only, like, three rooms—meaning that everyone would starve to death if the hunger system was involved. I know Explorers had some of those, too, but those were mainly for later stage dungeons, where bigger challenges were expected. It also makes a lot of the dungeons… really boring and repetitive? Like, the graphics are great, but there isn’t really too much variety of the non-plot dungeons beyond differences in color schemes? And while the puzzles involved are excellent, there aren’t really a lot of them, and so far Inflora Forest is the only one where the puzzle is still relevant after making it through the first time—the other ones seem to keep the bridges and stairs you make the first time around, leaving those sections rather superfluous.
And while I like how Companion mode lets me have more of a casual sort of playstyle, and I can build up Paradise and do mini-games without interference from the plot… It kind of makes Post Town really unnecessary beyond specified plot scenes? Like… I don’t have to wait to open any Treasure boxes. Once a dungeon ends I get instant gratification of finding out what’s in them (assuming I have enough money). Same thing with the gold bars. And since Quagsire operates as a shop as well, there is really no need for Kecleon (in Post Town—the ones in the dungeon are still extremely useful) beyond maybe him having some rarer items on occasion—but even then, getting certain shops in Paradise also makes him even more redundant.
(Though, speaking of Paradise shops: Elite boutique—not worth it. Maybe if all shops operated that way—were only around for a specific period of time before inevitably closing—it would be less grating… but there was no warning that that shop would only be run for a few days before closing forever, in addition to the fact that I have to watch Gurdurr’s sad face and laments about destroying the place [after a big part of his backstory involved someone deliberately destroying his work, mind you!] when they could have easily solved it as running more like the travelling salesmon in post town—you never know who or when someone will show up, or how long they’ll stay, but the possibility is at least there that someone will show up again.)
I also don’t like how you can’t stack missions—it really takes the emphasis off of the actual “exploring dungeons” part of the game, and puts it more on trying to build up Paradise. Which is fine, but it just doesn’t feel like traditional gameplay for a PMD game, you know?
As far as characterizations goes… It’s honestly kind of a mixed bag for me in comparison with some of the other games? Like… I do think that, overall, your immediate team and allies had better characterization visible in story, following the plot. As in, they came right out and showed you in the cutscenes, and didn’t depend on you going and talking to them individually in town, reading their diaries, and playing special episodes. I don’t think that the partner is the absolute best-characterized one writing-wise, but they were very, very well-done and do show good growth throughout (Rescue Team is the worst, mostly because of how bland they actually are—especially in the Post Game, where they are completely optional, and no longer follow you around or really talk to you at all like an individual character, rather than just another pokemon you recruit from dungeons [and on that note—I’m kind of sad that Gates got rid of the feature that actually let you talk to your team in the dungeons themselves. Sure, most of what got said was the same ten or so bland lines for everyone, but… I still liked having that option to just turn around and discuss things, especially since at some points it was unique based on where in the plot you were!)
But at the same time… that does take a little mystery out of it? Like… it makes your own (the actual, physical player’s) relationship with them a bit… less rewarding? You aren’t actually working at forming them, this way, the way you would be if you were exploring the town, happened across someone from the guild, and then decided to talk with them. That way, learning all these cool little hints and quirks was almost like a puzzle itself, something you had to work for, something that really embraced the idea of exploring and immersion.
Which is also kind of why I’m of two minds about the fact that the hero does actually have scripted lines, beyond just their thoughts and the little “running motion” indicative of things being said, but not actually described. There aren’t as many dialogue trees, you don’t really get to make that many choices, and the lack of space left up to the imagination… well, it doesn’t make me resonate with the hero as much as in other cases? I don’t really feel like they’re “me,” or could be “me,” so while they do feel in-character for the “character” of the hero… it just doesn’t feel like I’m actually the hero. It doesn’t leave space for that option the way that the other games do.
As for other characters… honestly, it’s kind of hit and miss for them as far as characterization goes, and I think a lot of that has to do with my earlier remarks about how unnecessary Post Town feels most of the time. I feel like they were really over-ambitious with their ensemble cast? Because, sure, some of them like Leaveanny, Swadloon, Lillipup, and Herdier I thought were well done… most of the others were rather forgettable? There were some travelers like Trubbish, Mienfoo and Dwebble that I really like, but I think that most of the others just don’t get enough characterization. Sure, it’s nice that a lot of them care about the player and greet them as their own individual, clearly trying to convey that relationships are being formed… but I just don’t care that much for the town as a whole? The others don’t really grab me, or add that much to the plot at all? Especially since half the time bigger plot discussions only really happen with the group in Paradise?
Like… Explorers had a lot of people, but the fact that they did travel in and out of town, and would sometimes go missing for days, but clearly had their own little stories and plots they were following was really interesting! Same with Rescue Team—the Pokémon Square was small, but it actually felt like a lived-in town? And I’m pretty sure the main towns of PSMD that you were actually using as a hub had that too—Serene Village definitely did. But Gates… I just don’t really see it. They were too ambitious, and they fell flat. I feel like maybe they could have fixed this if you were allowed to visit it in Companion Mode, too—or if they just didn’t let you visit any non-Paradise shops and only allowed Quagsire to edit your party—or if they shrunk it down so that the only thing there was Swanna’s place and the hill, and had the individual characters visit on a basis similar to Explorers, but… yeah.
As far as plot/story goes… well, some of that is hard to determine, just because of how much is involved in a good story. Characterization, like I said, is fine overall, but the story does seem really… low stakes? For the most part? Especially when compared to Rescue Team or Explorers. I think it has good progression over all—especially when compared to the mess that was PSMD!—but there isn’t quite as much of an overall… driving force? I think?
Like… okay, I know I’ve said before that it is a little weird that the hero in Explorers—and I guess also in Rescue Team—spends so much time focusing on other stuff rather than figuring out exactly what happened to them, why they turned into a pokemon, why they have amnesia, etc. (especially since that is part of their stated reason for joining the Guild in Explorers), but in all fairness… what else are they really supposed to do? They have amnesia, they have no clues as to a starting place to even look, it makes sense that they would want and need a safe place and routine figured out so that they can even start looking. And there are some hints pretty early on about their backstory/the state of the world (in dreams and dimensional screams). But the Gates hero… well they actually do have something of a starting place, and they have far more reason to really care about figuring all that out. For one thing, they do not have amnesia. The game makes that pretty clear, and the partner even makes comments on that—asking about friends and family, etc.
So why aren’t they making more of an effort to figure out how to get back home so they can actually reunite with those loved ones?? Or at least commenting on why they might not be concerned about that?? And since the hero doesn’t have amnesia, they also clearly remember the fact that they were called to the pokemon world specifically because someone was asking them for help—and they had a visual description of who they assumed that someone to be. They have a starting point. Why are they not asking around about that?? Why did they wait for more dreams to happen first? And, while it did get brough up in game a little bit, with them commenting on how maybe it wasn’t the greatest idea for them to be taking one of the spots on that initial Great Glacier Expedition because they do, actually, have some responsibility they’re supposed to fulfill, and they don’t know if they’ll have more dreams on the way… they still go on that expedition! Without bringing any of that up verbally, or to the partner who has by that point already agreed that they will go with the hero to save that pokemon as soon as their dreams clear up more.
But… like… they shouldn’t just be being so passive about this??? There are things they could all be doing to prepare! And maybe that is getting into some different facets of the partner’s personality, and showing how really dependent they are on the player—like, having their reluctance to do more be because of how much they really don’t want them to leave after (which does get brought up a little bit)… but I don’t think that’s quite what the game was going for—and if it was, then that needed to be made clearer.
So I guess over all… I think that Explorers is a better game to play if you do want something more story/plot driven, and want to, well, explore things a bit, while Gates is better for a more casual sort of play. Like… the actual plot almost seems like the side story or Special Episode in the face of building up Paradise.
Though, that probably does say more about an individual’s playstyle over the game itself, huh?
I guess… if you’re more into direct characterization via cutscenes, Gates is better (though there are times I wish it showed more of the visuals—like for some of the party scenes, or the housebuilding scene). But if you want a more integrated plot, Explorers is better—or Rescue Team, but it doesn’t have as good of a post-game).
And PSMD… well, I still stand by my earlier statements that I think the first part of the game was great, and the partner was the best-explored/characterized of them all… but it quickly lost plot cohesion and most of the adult characters are terrible people who should not be allowed around children—and the player character really got screwed over by basically everyone and never got closure for any it.
(Also, I can’t actually say anything about DX, since I don’t have a Switch, but from what I’ve seen it’s basically just Rescue Team with some improvements to gameplay mechanics? The story seemed to be pretty much the same from what little I saw.
Oh, and also Ekans’ sprite looks very, very weird.)
...I think that’s everything I had to say for now.

In which a present is prepared
First [ARC 1]: In which the human is transformed First [ARC 2]: (This is it!) Next: In which a birthday is celebrated Previous [ARC 1]: In which the lost are found back home
It’s calm. A cool breeze blows by, ruffling the furry hide of the scarred cubone and picking up her scarf slightly in the air.
Nelvana sat on the ground, leaning back to set her hands on the grass while she stared up at the open blue sky. It really was a nice day, and for now she could relax in the warm rays of the shining sun.
For once, she was alone at the Team Galaxy base, resting out on the lawn. Her teammates were all off doing their own thing, presumably, and that was quite alright for her. After all, there were less missions posted on the board for them to do, now that the disasters were slowly settling down as the world’s balance fixed itself; providing them with much free time to enjoy their future. Though, none of them would ever go too far on their own, and even now Nelvana could relax with the knowledge that her friends were off somewhere around Pokemon Square, and that if she wanted to see them, she would easily be able to.
However, being alone with one’s own thoughts rarely stays that positive for long. Nelvana couldn’t help but find herself thinking over recent and upcoming events.
It had been one week since the meteor that threatened the world’s balance and the very fate of the future itself had been destroyed, and six days since the trio of Nelvana and her two friends that had traveled from that dark future had returned from being erased from time and space itself. Of course, not everything had fixed itself so quickly. While the number of rescue requests that turned up on the board were fewer than before, there were still enough to fill each morning with work, even with there still being other active teams in the area. Many had expected there to be a sudden spike in evolution with the balance being fixed and everyone making up for lost experience, but so far there was still nothing.
On a less world-wide scale, Nelvana missed Gardevoir. Guilt ate away at her for not even really being able to thank the spirit guide for all of her help, and not being able to speak with her anymore felt just as bad, especially after Gardevoir had expressed just wanting to have some company so badly.
Regardless, Nelvana also knew that it would do her no good to continue dwelling on these issues which were currently outside of her control. As much as she longed to be able to do something about them, she couldn’t see any possible solutions, no matter how much she stressed over them.
What was within her control though, was the birthday of her best friend, Keahi. The torchic had been bubbling with excitement for the event for days now, and there were still three days until the day itself. Everyone else couldn’t help but find themselves excited for her as well, especially those who hadn’t really gotten the chance to celebrate anyone’s birthday before, which happened to be most of the team. Keahi, as usual, was fine with explaining how things should go. She had expressed wanting to have a small party with the team, where they could play games, enjoy some cake together, and hand out presents.
Nelvana didn’t want to mess this up. She wanted to show how much she cared for Keahi by getting the best present for her possible, but wondering what that gift would be had been plaguing her mind every since the torchic had mentioned her birthday.
“Hey, Nel! I’m back!”
Just barely as Nelvana’s thoughts wandered back to her partner’s birthday, the very person she was thinking of returned. Keahi beamed over at the cubone, waiting to make sure that she had her attention, before bolting over to her and tackling her into a hug.
“Hey Keahi,” Nelvana hummed, wrapping an arm around the warm torchic. “That didn’t take you long.”
“Of course not! I only went to order a cake from the café, you know that doesn’t take long!” Keahi replied with a giggle. “I hope you weren’t bored while I was gone.”
“Eh, maybe a little bit,” Nelvana murmured, “I was just thinking of what to get you for your birthday,” she admitted, absentmindedly running her fingers through Keahi’s feathers.
Keahi met Nelvana’s gaze, “again? I told you already, I don’t really mind what you get me. It’s the thought that counts after all!”
“I know…” Nelvana sighed, “I still want to make this good though.”
Keahi laughed, “I should’ve known. You really aren’t one to settle for less when you can do more, huh?” she said, “if only I could provide you with a better wish list…”
Nelvana rolled her eyes, “you haven’t provided any wish list!” she responded with a snort.
“That’s because I don’t have anything to wish for!” Keahi replied, lifting up a taloned foot to playfully kick at her partner. “I have everything I could have wanted. My biggest dream was to be in a rescue team, and here we sit as a gold ranked team! I have my home with all my stuff, and the best friends that I could ever ask for. What do I put on a wish list now?”
Nelvana paused, her expression softening after such a response, but then she smiled again and gave Keahi a pat on the head, “alright, fair enough… I’ll just have to figure out something eventually. All the others seem to have ideas anyway, so this isn’t impossible.”
“Actually! That’s a good point!” Keahi exclaimed, standing back up. “Why don’t you go ask the others what they thought of, and they can inspire you to think of something on your own!” she suggested, “and I can even go find something else to do in the meantime so I don’t get spoiled on the surprise,” she added, shaking out her feathers.
“Are you sure?” Nelvana questioned, “I wouldn’t want to just leave you alone.”
“Don’t be silly, I’ll be fine! I’ll just go check on Spinda and Gulpin’s progress again or visit the kids or something!” Keahi chirped, “if this helps you get your thoughts settled, then it’ll be fine.”
“Mm, alright,” Nelvana chuckled, standing up as well.
Nelvana brushed the grass from her fur, then proceeding the pick up her club that she had left resting beside her. Keahi waited patiently for her friend to be ready to go, and then the pair silently left the property and headed down the familiar path towards Pokemon Square.
At Pokemon Square, they were greeted with the usual joyful atmosphere around all the citizens. With summer slowly reaching its end, many of the pokemon were out enjoying the warm days while they lasted, while others were hoping to get the jump on the next season by setting out decorations nearly a month early.
The sight that Nelvana appreciated right off the bat was two of the other Team Galaxy members, Alex the grovyle and Ceebee the shiny celebi, over by the Kecleon Stand. They were the two others that Nelvana had lived with in the future, or as they had currently dubbed as the dead timeline, and who had traveled back in time with her to fix time itself. While Nelvana’s amnesia prevented her from remembering them properly, she still felt the warm familiarity every time she saw her old friends. Those two were usually together anyway, evidently Ceebee felt more comfortable with either Alex or Nelvana than anyone else, despite having become fast friends with the rest of the team and even most of the town.
“Hey, there’s Alex and Ceebee! You can go talk to them. I heard they were thinking of present shopping anyway, so that makes the timing right,” Keahi commented, nudging Nelvana.
“And how would you know what they were doing?” Nelvana asked curiously, raising a brow.
“I overheard them on my way back over to you, but I made sure to hurry on past so I wouldn’t get spoiled,” Keahi told her, “speaking of, I guess I should head on my way again. Good luck with getting inspired! See you later, Nel!” she continued before giving a wave of her wing and hurrying away.
“See you, Keahi!” Nelvana replied.
Nelvana watched her partner head north to Whiscash Pond, before turning her attention back over to the nearby pair, who had noticed her nearby. She headed over to them at the stand, where they seemed to be getting instructions from the two brothers on how to use the roll of colored paper that Alex was holding.
“Hello there Nel!” Ceebee hummed, “what brings you over here?” she asked.
“Oh, I actually wanted to ask about gift ideas for Keahi… but, uh, what are you guys doing?” Nelvana responded, eyeing the paper curiously.
“We’re trying to teach these two to use freaking wrapping paper of all things!” Purple-Kecleon snapped, smacking his hand down on the table dramatically.
“Hey, cut us some slack here,” Alex chuckled, tugging on the wrapping paper. “We didn’t get this in the dead timeline, y’know. Besides, you and your bro will get paid for this either way, so why do you even care?”
“Wrapping paper?” Nelvana repeated, poking at the paper. “What do you wrap with it? It doesn’t look that strong,” she commented.
“This is used to wrap up boxes! More specifically, boxes that have presents inside!” Green-Kecleon answered, “there should be enough in this roll for all of you to wrap up your presents for Keahi.”
“Why do you wrap up the presents?” Nelvana asked.
“To keep it a surprise! It’s half the fun!” Ceebee chirped, fluttering closer to the cubone as she spoke to her. “Er, apparently, at least. Keahi has mentioned it a few times, after all, so it does sound right.”
“Oh, yeah. That does make sense,” Nelvana agreed, “anyway, I came to ask you guys what you’re getting for Keahi. I’m still having trouble thinking of something,” she explained.
“Still? You’re really overthinking this, Nel,” Alex teased as he repetitively experimented with the roll of paper by tugging out some paper before trying to roll it back up again. “I’m sure that whatever you give her, she’ll like.”
“Yeah!” Ceebee exclaimed, “try not to worry so much! But if you’re looking for ideas, you could draw her something. I heard that cards are usually made for birthdays, you could do that!” she suggested.
“Mm, yeah, I considered that,” Nelvana sighed, tapping her club on the ground. “But I feel like I could do more than just a card. It doesn’t feel like much of a gift.”
Alex shrugged, “your choice. I kinda have to agree with you on that thought process though, but also Ceebee is right about the art idea. You are one of the only ones that could take an artistic route on this, and make it look good, so that would make your gift unique,” he said, “Ceebee ‘n I are taking a more practical route on this.”
“That does sound like you, less like Ceebee though. I would have expected you to try making or finding something,” Nelvana responded, glancing up at the celebi flying in place in the air.
“Heh, yup… maybe next time. I think I still need more time to adjust to this… time, before I get that creative with gifts.” Ceebee admitted, “I really wanted to find a plant for her, but she also mentioned that she wouldn’t be good at taking care of it, so I changed my mind,” she continued before holding out a small cardboard box in front of her. “So, I got this instead! It’s a fire gem, she’ll be able to boost a fire-type move with it,” she said in a yell-whisper.
“Oh, that’s really nice!” Nelvana hummed, peeking into the box to view the diamond shaped red gem inside the box, which almost appeared to burn with its own little ember inside the crystal.
“Thanks! I hope Keahi will appreciate it. It’ll make that flamethrower attack go off with a bang,” Ceebee replied, hugging the box close to her. “I just need to wrap it, and then it should be good to go for the big day,” she added, glancing over at the wrapping paper Alex was still fiddling with.
“My gift isn’t quite ready yet. I ordered the TM for rock smash, since Keahi doesn’t have a fighting-type move yet. Apparently torchics don’t even get to learn many fighting-type moves, which is disappointing considering what they evolve into. So, I figured I’d help with that,” Alex explained, “besides, that way we’ll have another team member with a fighting-type move, since we only have you right now, Nel. I was going to look for recycle so we could just reuse brick break, but apparently torchics can’t learn that.”
“Recycle is a pretty rare TM anyway,” Purple-Kecleon chimed in, “I’ve been meaning to get it in my stocks at some point, but it can be a challenging one to get your hands on. I’ll have it here someday, but not in time for your teammate’s birthday, I’m afraid.”
“Eh, don’t worry about it. Just do let us know when that arrives, I believe Rayden can learn it for us,” Alex replied, “now then, about the wrapping paper…”
“As we’ve already explained, it’s pretty easy. Measure, cut, and tape,” Green-Kecleon responded, his voice muffled as he leaned behind the counter to bring out some scissors that were hidden back there. “I’ve got some scissors here, if you’d like to borrow them?”
Alex’s mouth crept up in a grin, “do I need to pay to use those?”
Both kecleon brothers laughed, “only if you break them!”
“Could I cut this… without those?” Alex murmured, his grin only growing as he unrolled some of the wrapping paper again and the leaves on his arms began glowing in anticipation.
“Alex… please don’t cut the wrapping paper with leaf blade,” Ceebee sighed, narrowing her eyes at the grovyle.
“Do it,” Nelvana whispered, a mischievous glint in her blue eyes.
“I’m going to do it,” Alex taunted, shifting his left arm closer to the paper.
“Don’t! You’ve been offered a perfectly useful tool for this! Just use that!” Ceebee hissed, crossing her arms across her chest.
Ceebee’s protests fell on deaf ears as Alex took hold of his impulsive idea and swiped the glowing leaves across the paper in one swift motion. There was the sharp “ssst” sound as the leaf blade move made a clean cut right through the wrapping paper, nicely slicing it so that there was a decently sized piece of paper for Ceebee’s box left in Alex’s right hand.
However, to pull this off as efficiently as he did, Alex had to let go of the actual roll in his left hand, dropping it onto the ground. While Pokemon Square wasn’t known for being built on any sort of hill or slant, the momentum from Alex’s swift movement was enough to send the rest of the paper rolling away, unrolling all the paper wrapped around it as it did so.
“Ah! Shoot!” Alex yelped, watching as the roll easily got too far away from him to simply reach for.
“There it goes!” Nelvana giggled, “that was a good cut though,” she added, looking at the piece that the grovyle had been left with.
“Ceebee, would you mind going to get that with your telekinesis?” Alex asked.
“Ha! Nah, you go get it! This was your idea; you deal with the consequences of your actions!” Ceebee laughed, sticking her tongue out at him.
Alex rolled his eyes, “fine, I’ll go get it, be that way,” he huffed, “take this then, you’re welcome,” he added, shoving the piece of paper at Ceebee before bolting after the runaway roll of wrapping paper.
Nelvana continued giggling as she watched the grovyle hurry after the roll, which had made its way into some bushes by now. Ceebee rolled her eyes, but laughed again as well, beginning to try folding the paper she had been handed around the box.
“Alright, thanks for the help, but I think I’ll try finding the others soon and see what they think,” Nelvana told Ceebee.
“Okay! Good luck with that! Once Alex gets that back, I think we’ll move indoors; just so you know in case you come back,” Ceebee replied.
Nelvana nodded, “thanks for letting me know, I’ll keep that in mind. See you two later!”
Alex glanced back over at that last exclamation, “you’re leaving? Aw, alright. See you later, good luck with thinking of a gift for Keahi!” he responded.
The other two team members of the A Squadron on Team Galaxy were Tsuki the absol and Edgar the duskull. While everyone on the team got along really well, those two especially had paired off nicely; which was extra convenient since neither of them slept often because of their typing, and them getting along meant that they wouldn’t get as bored while everyone else rested each night.
Nelvana could recall having last seen them by the mission board, Tsuki explaining how they would wait and see if any new missions got posted while everyone else was off doing their own thing. Deciding that that would be the best place to start looking for her other teammates, she made her way eastward down the path. This theory was proven correct as she spotted the familiar pokemon hanging around the currently empty board. Tsuki lay beside it with her hind legs tucked under her belly and her chin rested on it front paws, while Edgar floated around, making circles around both the absol and the mission board.
“Hello Tsuki, hello Edgar,” Nelvana greeted, “you’re still here?”
Tsuki lifted her head, sitting up so that she could peer back at the cubone more easily, “hello there Nelvana,” she greeted with a pleasant smile. “Indeed, we’re still here. There were a couple missions added, and we have them now, if you were hoping to get back to work before the end of the day.”
“I actually wanted to ask about gift ideas for Keahi, but if you want, I can go back and let the others know that there are still more missions to get done,” Nelvana replied.
“Don’t worry, there’s no rush! They’re both item finding missions,” Edgar hummed, “we can talk about gift ideas! You having trouble?”
“A bit, yeah,” Nelvana admitted, sitting down beside Tsuki and leaning against the absol’s side. “I already asked all the others, but I figured I’d see if either of you two had anything new to suggest, or if I could get inspired by what you guys settled on for gifts.”
“Ah, I see,” Tsuki murmured, “well, I’m afraid I don’t have much to suggest. You do know Keahi the best out of any of us, so you’ve probably already thought of anything I could think of now,” she said, “however, if you think it will help in your thinking, I’ve decided to find some ingredients for Keahi, since that seems to be an enjoyable hobby for her. She appears to be quite excited each time any of us ask for a cooking lesson, at the very least.”
“Oh, that is a good idea! I bet she’ll enjoy that. What have you found so far?” Nelvana responded.
Tsuki shrugged, “I went back and found some of those chestnuts, as well as some berries and seeds.”
“That’s why she’s been impatient to go through some dungeons,” Edgar added in a playfully hushed tone, “she wants to find more food items!”
Nelvana giggled, “ah, that makes sense. How about you, Edgar? Are you looking for items in dungeons too?”
“Oh! Yeah, kinda! I’ve been finding some lucky items for Keahi to hold onto! Wanna see them?” Edgar exclaimed, already going over to a small sack that he had stashed away behind the sign.
“Sure,” Nelvana replied, despite knowing that he would likely try showing her anyway, it felt better to confirm and let him know that this was fine.
Edgar brought over the sack and set it down in front of Nelvana and Tsuki to show them. It wasn’t tied shut, so when he placed it on the ground it flopped over slightly, spilling a few of the items that had been inside. Just a glance told them that these “lucky” objects were mostly just random things one might find on the ground. There were many rocks, as well as some feathers and leaves. Curious, Nelvana reached in to see what else was included in here, and found a couple shells that were hidden deeper inside.
“I found most of these in the area! Isn’t that nice? They must be really lucky in that case, for me to have found them so easily!” Edgar commented, floating closer to the others. “I heard that finding coins on the ground can be lucky too, but I only found a couple of those laying about, and I gave one of them to Metapod,” he added, pointing to the mentioned coins, which had fallen into the bottom corner of the sack. “Do you think Keahi will like them? Felicity said that items with no price aren’t worth much, but I think she was just in a bad mood. Lots of things with no price have more worth than anything you can buy or sell.”
Nelvana couldn’t help but smile, “yeah, I definitely think Keahi will like these,” she assured Edgar, helping set the spilled objects back into the sack. “And you’re right about the money idea. It doesn’t need to be expensive to be nice,” she continued, “oh, and the rocks with a ring around them are especially lucky.”
Edgar’s eye lit up in a warm glow, “thank you, Nel!” he chirped, “I’ve been working really hard on this!”
“I can tell,” Nelvana hummed, handing the sack back to the duskull. “The kecleons have some wrapping paper and stuff for wrapping gifts, you should go see them.”
“Maybe I will! I haven’t used wrapping paper before, but I heard that it’s really colorful!” Edgar responded.
“Rolls pretty well too,” Nelvana added under her breath.
“Did we help you at all with your own gift ideas?” Tsuki asked, standing up and stretching for a moment before sitting down beside Nelvana again.
“Oh… I’m not sure, sorry,” Nelvana murmured, “I’m probably still overthinking this.”
“You could do some art for her,” Tsuki suggested.
“Ceebee already suggested that, but thanks,” Nelvana sighed, rolling her club back and forth under her hand in the short grass around them. “That might be what I have to fall back on at this point.”
“Well, Tsuki did say that you’re the one who knows Keahi best,” Edgar pointed out, “what’s important to her, that you could maybe make into a present? What really matters to her?”
Nelvana exhaled again, turning her gaze up to the sky, “she… she really loves the stars, and cool colors, and exploring, and battling, and… cooking, like Tsuki said. Keahi loves this team and our work together, and… and she really loves people. She loves us, and her family…”
Nelvana let herself trail off as she thought to herself about the question, and how it could connect to possible presents she could get or make for Keahi. For a moment, she couldn’t help but let her heart be warmed with the thoughts of what her partner liked…
…and then, finally, the right idea came to her as she thought about Keahi’s family, and how much she had always cared for them.
“I think I have an idea,” Nelvana announced, almost a whisper as she worried about second-guessing herself, but the more she kept thinking, the more it felt right. “Yeah, I think I’ve thought of something! Thanks for the help guys!”
“I’m glad that we could help,” Tsuki purred.
“Yay!” Edgar cheered, “I knew you’d be able to come up with something!”
“I’m going to get started, thanks again! Love you!” Nelvana replied, hurrying back off towards Pokemon Square in a spring of energy.
“Love you!” Edgar exclaimed, spinning around again.
Tsuki chuckled, “love you too,” she responded softly, “ah, and if you see the others, let them know that we’d like to get back to work soon!” she added.
“I will!” Nelvana called back over her shoulder.
Nelvana sped back into Pokemon Square, back across the path and past the Persian Bank over to the Kecleon Stand again. This is where she paused, taking a moment to look around and plan ahead again. No one was by the Kecleon Stand anymore, aside from the brothers themselves. Spinning around, she could see Ceebee talking to Keahi over by the café now, the latter of which had found a light blue balloon and was carrying it from a string in her beak.
Alex was no longer hanging around with them, but if Nelvana had been able to remember anything, it was to track down her friends.
She found Alex not at the Team Galaxy base, but just off of the Makuhita Dojo, staring off into the empty fields ahead of him. Nelvana quietly walked up beside him, silently enjoying the view with him for a few moments. There was no need to call out to him, since she knew that he had noticed her gaze the moment she had spotted him.
“Heh, welcome back. You weren’t gone for long,” Alex greeted, glancing down at the cubone. “Did you think of something?”
“Actually, I did,” Nelvana replied, “which is what I wanted to ask you about.”
Alex chuckled, “I assumed so. What did you come up with?”
“I want to make a bracelet. Like the one Combusken has,” Nelvana told him, “do you know where he got it, or if he made it himself?”
“Why are you asking me?” Alex questioned.
“Come on, I know you have an eye for items. You had plenty of time to notice and ask about that bracelet. It’s obviously important to him, which would especially catch your eye,” Nelvana huffed.
Alex laughed, “ah, you got me there! I did ask him about the bracelet. It was made by his boyfriend, Servine, who has sadly passed away. So, I’m afraid that you won’t get much help out of this route,” he explained.
“Oh, that’s… that’s terrible,” Nelvana murmured, the weight of the news dragging down on her mood for a moment. “I… I still want to make it though. I’ll just have to figure something out on my own.”
“I’m sure that you’ll manage. Just do a braid or somethin’,” Alex suggested, shrugging, “actually, won’t this be an anklet? Keahi doesn’t exactly have arms yet, since she hasn’t evolved yet.
“Maybe I will braid it. And yeah, I know she hasn’t evolved. I think she’ll still like it though. She can wrap it around her talons or something,” Nelvana said, “well, I guess I had better go find some string then. Thanks anyway. Oh, did you handle the wrapping paper, by the way?”
Alex scoffed, “I was hoping you would have moved on from that. Yes, I got the roll back, and Ceebee’s present is nicely wrapped. Why don’t you get to work on your’s?”
Nelvana laughed, “I will, I will… see you later then, Alex. Be prepared to get to work later, Tsuki and Edgar have been collecting some missions for us to do before the day is out.”
“Alright, I’ll probably hang out with them then. I’m in the mood for some more dungeon explorin’ anyway. See you,” Alex responded, looking back out onto the horizon.
The string that Nelvana was looking for wasn’t hard to find. While not many pokemon in the area were big crafters, the Kecleon Stand still had some in stock, just in case. She picked out three strings, deciding that braiding would be the easiest, and bought them in blue, purple, and pink, all in similarly pastel shades so that they would hopefully blend together and look nice.
With her few supplies collected for the task, all she needed to do was to find a nice place to get started. Nelvana settled on a patch by the Kangaskhan Storage, after checking with Kangaskhan if it was fine to lounge beside the stand. Kangaskhan gave Nelvana some tips for making the bracelet, as the motherly normal-type had done some crafting herself in the past.
Nelvana sat down, placing her club upright in front of her, and attached the three pieces of string together on it so that they would stay in place. Taking the strings in her hands, she began weaving them together, instinctively repeating the mantra “right over middle, left over middle,” in her mind to remind herself of the steps to this task. The repetition was oddly soothing, or perhaps it was just the simple craft itself that let Nelvana relax more than she had before. Around her, she could still hear the faint voices of various pokemon chatting to each other, which was a constant promise that everyone was doing alright.
Keahi was going to love this gift, Nelvana was confident of it.
Right over middle.
Left over middle.
Blue.
Purple.
Pink.
Right over middle.
Left over middle.

Title: Sanders Mystery Dungeon
Words: 2221
Pairings: Slight Logicality and Prinxiety
Warnings: Food mention, apart from that none I think
Additional Info: Pokemon! AU (This is a one-shot with foreshadowing, but I’m not sure if I will actually continue this.
The weak rays of the early morning sun shined through the window, warming Roman in his comfy bed while at the same time waking him up from his deep slumber. The Pokemon opened a groggy eye, then another before it yawned heartily, revealing some sharp little teeth, before it looked around, trying to find the source of his awakening, shielding his eyes from the attacking sun. Roman stretched his little body until some popping noises caused great relief in the back and arms of Roman before he jumped out of bed, shaking his head violently and ears flopping into his face.
The small Riolu looked around once more before grabbing it's bag and running outside, feeling just as fit and lighthearted as every day, ready for it's daily shopping-routine. It was still quite early in the morning, but some Pokemon were already roaming around, shopping at the store of the Kecleon-brothers or getting money from Persian on his bank. It was a simple life every Pokemon should be happy with, but Roman simply didn't feel like accepting this simple life.
He wanted adventure, wanted to see new things and travel to the end of the world with his dearest friends, earning glory and honour and being welcomed with cheering and applause once he returns back to their little town with few Pokemon. Roman walked towards the store of the Kecleon-brothers, quickly pulling some coins out of his back and greeting the green and violet Pokemon, who greeted him back, being surprisingly cheery considering the time. „Hello, Kecleon and Kecleon! Three apples please! Just as usual!“
The brothers laughed and handed the Riolu a plastic-bag with three apples inside, the pokemon laughing as it realised, that they had the order already prepared, knowing that Roman would appear, just like every day, to receive his three apples. Roman took them gratefully and handed the brothers his money, the green Kecleon tilting it's head as it asked: „Excuse me for being nosy, but may I ask where you alway's take those apples of our's?“ Roman pulled an eyebrow up, looking at the Pokemon, before he answered: „Simple, I go to the liblary and share them with my best friends. Oh they are great, you should visit them someday, it's great!
The purple Kecleon laughed heartily, slamming it's hand on the counter as it giggled: „All righty then! Enjoy your snack, kid and run along! We'll see ya tomorrow alrighty?“ Roman nodded, before walking away, enjoying the early morning-hours, the sun shining on his fur and the distinct mumbling of other Pokemon in his large black ears. It was honestly great. It was such a good day, but Roman just wasn't satisfied with those traditions, this village, this life. He wanted to travel across the ocean and see land's he never saw before, he wanted to fill the library of his dear friends with pictures and journal-entrys of new places, new storys and new treasures, he wanted to be the best explorer time has ever produced. It would be great!
But as of right now he was just a child and he shouldn't even think about the big, wide world, he should rather live his merry life and help his friends in their library, but it simply wasn't enough. The library was small but cozy with glass-doors and a sign above it, that reads the word: „Librery“. Roman had to chuckle every time, because it took him some time to see the mistake, but once he saw it one of them groaned loudly and the other one smiled rather sheepishly, claiming that they misspelled it by accident. It was a pretty funny day and filled Roman with delight if the thinks about it. He pushed the doors open, inhaling the surprisingly good smell of dust and old books, a smell he learned to welcome with open arms.
„LOGAN! PATTON! I'M HERE!“ He heard loud yelping and froze as he saw Logan balancing on a stack of books, the small Pokemon flinching so badly it wasn't unable to balance anymore as it fell down with a yell. „LOGAN!“ Yelled Roman, running towards the little ralts, but not quite fast enough as a Khangaskhan jumped just in time and safed the ralts from a rather painful fall, the psychic landing softly on Patton's head, sighing in relief and smiling down at Patton, who took Logan and put him in his sac, then logical Pokemon poking out of it with a pout while Patton simply laughed
. „Heya Roman! Excuse us, we are simply sorting some of the books so everything is back in place again, you know?“ Roman laughed as he nodded, approaching the two of them with a smile. The three of them already knew each other when they started hatching, Patton was the smallest Khangaskhan in the world back in the day and Logan could barely lift a crumb with his psychic abilities. Roman wasn't able to sense aura either, but all of them grew stronger, especially Patton who became one of the biggest and strongest Khangaskhan Roman ever saw, but to be fair, he never saw another Khangaskhan in his entire life, so this probably didn't say much.
„Hey guys! I brought breakfast! Care for a little break?“ Patton smiled brightly as he carrief Logan in his sac the whole time who tried to escape but gave up after some seconds and simply allowed it, literally jumping in Patton's hand once he offered it to help Logan climb out, the psychic nodding his head slightly to greet Roman who greeted with a little wave and a bright smile. „Salutations Roman. Even though you are always a little late, I appreciate that you are... ALWAYS a little late. It adds some kind of routine to our breakfasts. Routines I very much appreciate.”
He corrected his glasses he was wearing under his green veil, before lifting it and flopping it behind his head so he can look directly at Patton and Roman with his red eyes, taking the apple gratefully and taking a small bite out of it, chewing it suspiciously before nodding in satisfaction, the apple being exactly the same it used to be.
„It's delicious, like always. A job well done, Roman.“ The Riolu grinned at Logan before taking a bite itself, chewing the fruit and quite enjoying himself while Patton just ate the whole apple in one bite. He became really big compared to the other two who never got to evolve, so now it was Patton protecting them. „Guys, I promise you, that even whem I become a big adventurer, I will always come back to you guys and eat breakfast with you. It's just too great to simply give up.“ Logan gave Roman a look, asking suspiciously: „Where do you plan on travelling?“ Roman's eyes brightened up as he stood on his legs, pointing towards an invisible goal as he exclaimed:
„To the Wallachia!“ Logan gave Roman a look, explaining: „Roman, that's literally a place that doesn't exist. You use this word to describe a place that doesn't exist or isn't worth visiting.“ Roman's grin only brightened as he exclaimed: „And that's exactly what I mean!“ He took Logan's small white arm in his slighty bigger paws and squeezed them slightly, before announcing: „If there is a place everyone thinks doesn't exist, then I will travel to the end of the world, and I will find it! Trust me guys, it will be great!“
Roman let go, allowing Logan to fall backwards and hold his head in pain while Roman grabbed his back, waving at Patton and Logan and calling, before leaving the library: „Was nice with you, like always! See ya tomorrow!“ Patton waved halfheartedly before helping Logan up, checking him worriedly and asking: „What did you see?“ Logan groaned before opening his shining red eyes, saying in an emotionless voice: „Great danger will fall from the sky and bring doom and demise to every little life.“ Patton bit his lip as he petted Logan's head, trying to bring him back into reality while at the same time brooding over the vision the psychic just told him. What could it mean?
Roman was meanwhile having the time of his life, running around without giving a care being his favourite part-time activity, apart from training, but this was also some kind of training considering that he practically trained his speed and stamina. He reached his favourite spot in the village quickly, a little hill at the end of town with a tree right on top of it, giving him a beatiful view and shadow on hot days. Today was another beautiful day.
The sun was only a little clouded, just to make it possible to look into it without sneezing or being blinded, the leaves of the tree were slightly rustling due to a warm breeze, the grass being long and green like always and it was just a perfect day for being lazy. Roman fell backwards, now sitting comfortably in the grass while staring upwards towards the sky, watching the clouds travel towards the horizon and away from Roman's line of sight. Maybe he could be happy here. Maybe he could be just lazy every day and stare into the sky and help Logan and Patton in his library.
Maybe he could find a beautiful boyfriend and adopt a egg in the daycare Patton also worked at and lived the life his parents wanted him to live. But this simply wasn't Roman's style, he remembered dreaming about adventure even before he was able to work, dreams about deserts and seas and forests and mountains, maybe even volcanos or a fortress in the sky, where legendary pokemon waited for the hero to arrive. Logan took a deep breath, allowing himself to relax as he stared in the sky.
„That would be a life, wouldn't it?“ Asked the riolu to himself, squinting slightly as he spotted something he didn't recognize in the sky. It was flying fast and had a little yellow tail at the end, Roman's eyes lighting up as he recognized the stargate, quickly jumping on his feet and saying his wish: „I wish for great adventures with my dear friends.“ After Roman casted his wish he frowned in slight confusion, because how can stargates travel through the sky when it's daytime? And more importantly, why was it racing right towards him?
„OH DEAR MOTHER OF ARCEUS!“ Screamed Roman as he sprinted away, hiding behind the tree as the stargate landed right next to the spot Roman was standing just a few moments ago. Roman poked his head out, looking surpsised at the Pokemon that was now lying there. It was some kind of fox with black fur and ret intervalls, a rather pretty pokemon he might even admit. Roman inched closer, poking it lightly while trying to talk to it.
„Hello? Are you alright? Come on, wake up.“ The Pokemon wasn't dead, it was indeed breathing and now groaning in pain as it tried to regain it's conciousness, standing up on shaking leg's with slight help from Roman, who finally recognized the Pokemon as a Zorua, a rare and quite beautiful Pokemon The Zorua groaned again, before it opened it's blue eyes, looking around in slight confusion, huffing a question: „Where... Where am I?“ Roman frowned slightly as he exclaimed: „You fell RIGHT OUT OF THE SKY! I thought you were a shooting star, but you are clearly not, as I can see now! Who are you and where are you from?“
The Pokemon blinked in slight confusion, staring for a long time at the Riolu, before he worked up a name in his head, one of the few things he actually remembers: „...Virgil.“ Roman's eyes lighted up as he heard the name, grinning brightly at Virgil and bowing down to greet him like a gentlemen. „It's a beautiful name Virgil. May I ask about your origins and how you fell from the sky like a stargate?“ Virgil simply shook his head as he was lacking the actual ability to remember the answer to all of these questions, looking guility up at Roman who stared sympathetically at the fox.
„You don't need to tell me right now. It's alright. You hungry? I know a great store downtown where they sell great apples.“ Virgil's stomach actually grumbled at the suggestion, causing Virgil to blush and Roman to laugh as he pointed down the hill towards the village. „Come on, this way! Ach... I'm Roman by the way.“ The Riolu stopped and smiled as it introduced itself, before running away, towards the store of the kecleon-brothers, Virgil yelping and trying his best to keep up with Roman.
„Roman! Roman, wait! I can't run that fast!“ What a confusing situation. Virgil woke up in a strange place with no memories apart from a name. But it would be best to go along with Roman and maybe remember some stuff about the past, at least for the time being. Because he had to find out who he actually was, he couldn't live without his identity.

NOOOW THAT I AM PLAYING THE 4TH DS GAME AGAIN, NEW IDEAS CAME
For years this story remained dormant, notably because I didn't dare spoiling with my new ideas and new mind my child self's as well as possibly replace ancient ideas I had that I possibly just don't remember. But after all, creation does have to evolve and I just can't help but think more ideas to feel the gaps !
Not to spoil (if I ever write it), some worldbuilding key points I came up with for now that would be added to everything that was said in the original post, I will talk about the actual plpt later :
(Also I adher to the anime's logic : Pokémon live as long as humans and evolution =/= age, for example a Charmander could be an adult who just never could or wanted to evolve and has an adult voice, kids etc, and on the contrary there could be a baby Charmander who hit the grind the super early became a baby Chairzard which can be dangerous if he has a tantrum lmao but the latter example is less likely)
First, no human turned Pokémon in my own PMD story. Even as a kid I always found it stupid that humans not only exist in a world where Pokémon speak, work, have their own money and society yet can also own them as pets. Also where the fuck do they come from !? So yeah in that AU/universe/continuity we focus on real actual Pokémon and they never ever heard of "hoo-manz"
The main Grovyle is 40, and the youngest of his brother. His Grovyle brother is 45, his Tropius brother 42. They both live in neighboring villages/towns from his. Other Grovyle is single but raises alone is preteen shiny Treecko daughter whose Grovyle mom left after having laid her egg and owns his own shop which is a job he loves. Tropius lives with his Salazzle girlfriend, none or them are sure if they want to marry or have kids yet but are very happy anyway and work hard to try to build their own business together (not sure yet what)
As said before our main Grovyle is married to a Bayleef he loves very much and had a Treecko son and 3 Chikorita kids (as a kid it used to be 3 daughters but now fuck clichés, it's 2 daughters and one son) with her he loves just as much, and as said before he still doesn't feel satisfied with life because he dreams to be an adventurer in the local guild, but now I enhanced the reasons why he doesn't like his job making him end up in that midlife crisis that motivates him to quit. It's because he works in Mawile's Perfect Market, which praises itself as the best shop in the region in which you can buy, sell and exchange a-ny-thing as well as open any kinds of chests all in one big shop with several employees, but precisely for that it's monotonous and intensive at the same time, one workmate is annoying as fuck and their boss, Mawile, as honest as she is (they all are paid very well and have a good number of day offs hence why everybody around Grovyle is proud of him and thinks he succeeded in life and is horrified when he quits) and even if she does have a good heart tends to be too self centered and incompetent with a big ego always often giving nearly impossible schedules and tasks, the shop is a success thanks to its employees
Grovyle's workmates are his childhood friend (his Gardevoir mom and Gallade dad were friends with Grovyle's parents), a sassy sarcastic male Gardevoir tired of life who would smoke 83 cigarettes a day if they existed in that universe in the middle of a divorce with his Kirlia wife and battling over who will rise their Ralts son, their common they made at work, a sassy female Pikachu who jokes about issues to cope about her monotonous life who has already divorced 3 Pikachus (even a shiny male) males and female, and a male Tododile nobody can stand because he is basically Milk from Big Mouth. Once Grovyle quits he is replaced by a female Kecleon who loves this job since it looks like Kecleons have a knack for selling in the games and her enthusiasm makes lifts up her workmates (who ironically then become happier at work when Grovyle left so everyone is happy in a way lol)
I do keep some Pokémon jobs from the games because they are recurring. Pelipper delivers messages and merchandise, Marowak owns a training dojo, Kangaskhan keeps your items safe. Also a slight job change for Xatu here : a shaman in the original games and a chest inspector (not these kinds of chests pervs) in the latest, here in my story he's basically a mix of village leader and mayor. Also unlike the games in which there is just one Chansey and all she does is take care of eggs, in my story there are several Chanseys and they take care of eggs sure but also of Pokémon, it's a hospital/Pokémon center and they have their little nurse caps like in the anime
Garchomp is the banker because he is a dragon type and dragons hoard treasures. Milktank owns a in which you can drink juices (and like in the game make them with your finds from dungeons) and many milk based drinks that are very popular, her Ditto husband is both a waiter and the lottery organizer who morphs into the winner to show everyone who won. Raichu links abilities together. Machoke owns the training dojo and is married with Mawile and both have a moody teenage Machamp daughter with a leather jacket with bad influences. The seaside restaurant woth deliciou delicious food such as stews, soups, nigiris, salads, steaks, balls etc is owned by a couple with no hands so everybody wonders how it's possible, a proud angry Gyrados and his calm and charming Milotic wife ; hey have 7 kids, 4 Magikarps, 2 Feebas and a Clamperl son Milotic had with her Gorebyss ex boyfriend who ditched her when he found out she was gravid and Gyrados raised as his own. A female Clefable is the current school teacher, it used to be a male Chatot back when Grovyle was a kid
Speaking of which a childhood friend Grovyle and his brothers had at school was a then Eevie now Vaporeon. They kind of lost track of each other since she and her family moved away but get to meet at times. They both are a little embarrassed when interacting with people around because people used to ship them as children foreseeing they would marry one day despite the fact they never felt more than friendship. She is sweet and half shy half ongoing but tends to shut down when her assholish Flareon father and Espeon mother with whom she still lives show up and keep putting her down with their snobbish airs and voices because she is still single with small jobs and keeo comparing her to her successful older siblings, her Jolteon twin sisters who are famous athletes/show performers and her brother who even though he chose not to evolve and is still an Eevie is still a famous talented doctor who married a rich Umbreon. Needless to say she feels like shit (but will be rewarded in the end worry not)
Grovyle's Sceptile father is a sad old man who smiles and feels joy only with his friends and 5 grandchildren, but really never mourned his lost wife, wanting to convince himself she has to be dead but since no body was ever found he keeps being haunted by doubts. He never forgave the Explorer Agency to have put her in such danger and had managed to convince Grovyle not to become one not to lose him too... until the story, which causesa a great conflict and dilemma on both sides
Tropius, Grovyle's mother, was a popular and brave explorer, kind and curious with a huge sense of justice and adventure with a lot of faith in humanity- I mean Pokémon who went on quests to help different Pokémon in her prime with her partner and best friend Lopunny. That's during a quest she met Sceptile, who was a rogue in a dungeon alongside his evil Sceptile friend who exploited him as his henchman. She beat the latter and convinced the former after a common love at first sight to give up on this life and follow him, which he did. For a good while Lopunny was also friends with Sceptile, the sassy yet supportive common friend who ships it... but when one rainy night she came back crying, wounded for life (would forever limp) and not knowing what happened to Tropius because she had passed out, he irrationally blamed her in his sorrow for not having been able to help her and cut ties. Even 34 years later, even if deep down he does know it wasn't her fault, he still subconsciously needs to lash on something not to fully sink in grief therefore keeps being cold to her. As if Lopunny wasn't guilty enough, and has lost her joyous and playful side too, closing herself into a grumpy old woman. Unable to go on quests anymore, she now is a mentor at the Explorer Agency, and would notably become Grovyle's and his partner's. First unsure about him since usually trainees come young and he is 40, a side of her thought her lost best friend's memory would be kept if her son followed her steps and eventually agrees, becoming wiser to him as she gets to know him and see his progresses. Gladly yet emotionally telling him about the good old days whenever he asked, which his depressed father never really wanted to or he would cry. He was only 6 when she disappeared, he wants to know more about her, and knowing him makes her slowly playful and smiling again
The Explorer Agency is basically a mix of the Guild from Time/Darkness/Sky and the independant guild system from the first games. It serves as a school, and you have the option to reside in there if you come from far away, but you don't owe it money and don't work for it, it's basically just a center to help you find the right guild for you to help as well as help training. It was founded 50 years ago by Gengar, who wanted to solidify the concept of guilds that could be done by scammers or incompetent explorers and he and his partner Seviper wanted to guarantee actual help. He became its head and Seviper his second in command, and as it became popular across the region guilds came affiliating with it. Among them was a ruley hot headed Nidorino who kept disobeying him or ignoring his advice and went into fights with him... until he finally realized he was bot made for that and quit, AAAAAND he and Gengar fell in love and adopted a Nidoran egg together. Said Nidoran grew up to be a Nidoqueen, had started to explore as a Nidorina with her Nidorino partner who then became her husband and nowadays now Gengar is dead she is the new calm and wise head of the agency with Nidoking as her loud and scary second in command. They have a teenage Nidorina daughter and a child Nidoran (I know in games Nidoqueens can't reproduce but that makes 0 senses and NidoqueenTwo does have a daughter so fuck it). She is unsure about Grovyle's coming too, but she did hear of the story and how her father always felt bad for assigning that mysterious top secret quest letter to Tropius (btw I didn't tell it yet : a quest for finding Mew. It's always Mew. Fucking Mew) and she thinks it would apease him wherever he is now if they could make something out of Tropius' son
Like in the games you can have up to 3 partners in your guild but usually people just go with 2, easier to pay and manage
Grovyle's would be a shy insecure young adult Tepig who isn't sure about his abilities due to years of bullying who recently gatheted enough courage to enter the Explorer Agency right the same day Grovyle did, and thus were assigned to each other. So both had to go through intense training and humiliation as well as epic fails in the dojo and actual beginners quests with lots of slapstick, but ince they would get the hang out of it notably with Lopunny they would learn to master their skills and become loyal friends with Grovyle acting as a father figure
Btw I didn't say much about Grovyle's family. He met his Bayleef wife as a customer to the Mawile's shop, who kept coming over and over because she found him cute which took him forever to pick up to Gardevoir's facepalm. He ended up suggesting to see each other outside of work around a milkshake, and the story went on. The 2 Chikorita daughters are girly and at this phase where "we girls are dainty and boys are yucky" and essentially work as the same person in 2 different bodies, the Chikorita son LOVES to be loud, fight and get dirty and the Treecko son is just a mommy's boy who obeys and snitches. Also to add salt on Grovyle's monotonous life : Bayleef's Meganium parents are extremely disdainful on their son in law for just being a shop seller as well as not a Chikorita evolution (racism) and openly mock him ("at least he does have the leaf, hohohohoho") whenever they are over. Needless to say Bayleef is a very supportive and sweet mother and wife and the one person who encouraged him to follow his dream seeing how bad and regretful he was feeling as he grew older. She is tired of her parents' shit but tolerates them because they were still good to her growing up (basically they are Vaporeon's parents' contrary) and are good danparents yes even to Treecko since they are aware he is theirs. She and her Sceptile father in law are in respectful terms, she seeing him as the patriarch of the family and he seeing her as a good influence on her son... needless to say she was kind of whistling while walking away when he would rage and wonder why he would quit such a good job to do stupid explorations
New key element for the main plot. Why does Dialga not act as regally as the other canon depictions ? Because he doesn't know he is Dialga anymore ! Grovyle and Tepig of course when they meet him know who he is, he is the Time god of that universe, but he just remembers hows to use his powers and doesn't remember anything else, so now he's a clingy lonely talkative giant who follows his "friends" who are just shitting bricks and walking faster but at least his power come in handy and he does end up becoming their friends more or less becomes the 3rd member of their guild. And yes I totally spoiled it in the original post : he has an instany love at first sight with Vaporeon in the end of the story when they all come home and instantly ask her in marriage and woo her, which flatters her and infatuates her since nobody notices her usually. Her parents, who never gave a shit about her, suddenly become supportive about becoming in laws with a deity and instantly start blaming her siblings not to be like her. Post story she lays eggs in the Pokémon center's maternity ward. Grovyle who heard Legendaries are sterile and genderless "...how?" "Oh it's easy the babies are her clones I put in her womb^^" "........"
Also Palkia is there at some point. First in attack mode but upon seeing his nemesis is completely dumbed down and amnesic he just stares at him like "................nyeh?" And consents to help the Guild tge best he can like a grumpy old hermit. Fun fact Dialga's and Palkia's powers combined help seeing alternative universes, among them the actual games
Stay tuned for more of that fanfic I will probably never write
Aah back when I was obsessed with Pokémon between ages 9 and 11 I was a huge fan in particular of the Mystery Dungeon series (talking Pokémon ! Such cute graphics !)
I particularily remember I had a story between the releases of the first Nintendo DS game and the second where there was no human turnt into a Pokémon but instead I had a Grovyle character BEFORE Nintendo made one for the new games (I WAS SO EXCITED ABOUT THAT COINCIDENCE) whose goal in life was more than to be the little merchant in his Pokémon village life led him to, what he wanted all his life was to be an adventurer at the local Guild like his mom (a Tropius) he admired but who disappeared on a mission when he was a little Treecko, which only reinforced his will as a meant to walk into her steps and do a tribute to her, but he was discouraged by his father (a Sceptile) who since that loss he never stopped mourning and grew resentment for that Guild that, to his eyes, put her in danger for nothing and pseudo glory and charity
But in his midlife crisis making his everyday life more boring than ever and encouraged by his wife (a Bayleef) and their 4 children who are huge fans of the Adventurers (3 Chikoritas whose gender I forgot and one Treecko), Grovyle ends up going "FUCK IT" and drops everything to enter the Adventurer Guild to the horror of his brothers (another Tropius and another Grovyle) and his father and the surprise of the guild and the village since they all know him and nobody saw it coming plus he is middle aged, since in the games we can conclude the characters entering are rather young. I forgot since it was 12-14 years ago about the details and real events and stories, but through efforts and struggles to become a good attacker, learn attacks, handle being wrecked by rogue Pokémon and finally be trusted by his co-workers and make friends to be able to do things he would also go great lengths to try to solve the mystery behind his mother's disappearance as she was exploring very far away, unknown and dangerous lands where rare Pokémon and powers exist
I also did add Dialga AFTER the Explorers of Time and Darkness game, whom he meets in the further he investigates, but unlike that Dialga my Dialga is a big legendary goof all so powerful but lonely and super grateful to finalmy meet and talk to someone after centuries of loneminess and more or less demands to follow him and becomes the weird clingy friend like if Donkey from Shrek was a powerful God of Time which is of course useful as it becomes more and more dangerous. I remember I also planned that after it all he does enter the Guild (TO THE HORROR OF ALL THE OTHER VILLAGERS AND ADVENTURERS WHILE GROVYLE WHO IS NPW USED TO HIM IS SUPER CHILL) as his companion and has a love at first sight with a pretty girl from the village (forgot if a Lopunny or an Eevolution) he marries and has kids with. I completely forgot what I had planned for Grovyle's mother ane what was behind her disappearance and what had even happened to her, sadly, in short I remembered the secondary stuff but forgot the main plot rofl

Letter reading time. Lots of text coming up! Italics for what was written, bold for who wrote it, and regular text in brackets for my ranting. (Like so.)
You’ve always been kind of a brat, Morla. But I’m jealous of the way you’re chasing your dreams. -Lombre
(Lombre not missing the chance to drag Morla one last time. Respect.)
Try not to eat too much. Take care. -Raticate
(Is that their way of telling us to ration our supplies for the journey or???)
Ven you are feeling lonely, remember ze village. -Hippopotas
(Sweet sentiment I guess)
A child’s dream can’t be destroyed by adults. Best of luck to you. -Simipour
(YOU’RE A PRINCIPAL WHY ARE YOU COOL WITH KIDS RUNNING OFF LIKE THIS!?!?!)
Let’s see, how can I put this? Even if you were problem children… if you work hard, maybe you won’t be so problematic. And on that note, good luck! -Watchog
(EVEN SNYDER IS IN ON THIS BULLSHIT!?)
Good luck.♪ Morla and Wren, I believe in you! -Audino
(AND THE SCHOOL NURSE TOO!?)
I was quite surprised when I heard the news yesterday… I’m glad you opened up to me! Good luck! -Farfetch’d
(THE ENTIRE SCHOOL FACULTY IS COOL WITH 2 CHILDREN JUST DROPPING OUT AND RUNNING AWAY FROM HOME! And dear fucking gods why does Farfetch’d make it sound like we came out to him?)
Good luck! Follow your dreams! -Sunkern
(I know I’ve seen them about, but I can’t recall ever interacting with Sunkern enough for them to be in on this letter writing bit.)
School is important, but it’s important to go after what you want in life, too. Take good care of yourselves… and good luck! -Roselia
(Well at least SOMEONE acknowledged that school is important but holy fuck...)
We have a shop in Lively Town, too.♪ So you have nothing to worry about! Good luck!♪ -Kecleon
(I imagine this wasn’t even on a bit of plain paper. They just scrawled it over the top of a flier advertising their shop. Who cares if a couple of twelvies are quitting school to move to the big city, so long as they know where to shop, right?)
Time to let these cute kids fly away on their journey! Hy-krah! -Hawlucha
(I never once used your business.)
Be brave and never give up! Take care! And good luck! -Kangaskhan
(I just realised I never got to try and convince Kangaskhan to give me booze. Dammit.)
Emphasis on WERE. They WERE looking out for us. Now they’ve just thrown in the towel.
Their encouragement has a distinct, “if you’re gonna fuck yourselves over, go big or go home” vibe to it if you ask me, but whatever.
Oh gods do I even want to see this?
Go on, Morla. See you when you get back. Your adventurous spirit can’t be contained. If you think you’re ready, go see your dreams through to the end. -Carracosta
(No. No I did not want to see that. What happened to children going off alone being dangerous in this world? Why has everyone just decided this is cool. Are they just taking the chance to get rid of Morla while they can take it? Am I just the acceptable casualty in their chance for a peaceful existence?)
He didn’t even sign off with an “I love you”, or a “be safe”, how does that make you fe-
Good luck to you, Wren. We just happened to meet, and you came to live with me… I reckon it sure enough was fun havin’ you around, Wren. I reckon I can’t help but worry. But I’m cheerin’ for you. Take care. -Nuzleaf
(It just jumped into the letter from Leaf Dad without so much as a “there’s a letter just for you too Wren”. At least I got a take care from my adopted parental figure. He probably feels bad that I’m stuck with Morla for the rest of my life because he brought me here.)
I’d thank you but honestly the fact that the adults accept and respect our decision to go, and yet are letting us go in the night rather than at least saying wait til morning when traveling will be safer annoys me too much for me to act polite.
Oh are we finally actually leaving?
BYE!
Aaaaannd.... We’re off!

some more
animals are Pokémon. objects are Pokémon. everything is a Pokémon. you become a Pokémon sometimes.
the Italian mafia boss runs a gym.
a random redhead shows up, helps you defeat the mafia, then disappears. he's the champion btw.
for some reason professors and important people always trust a 10-11 years old with the most technological shit to ever exist, like the master ball, the PokéNav, the PokéDex, teletrasportation, dream reading of Pokémon, and they always make the 10 years old save the world somehow while the champions just smiles and gives thumbs up from the nearby planet apparently.
a 10 years old can fly to space on the stratosphere protector which happens to be a legendary dragon Pokémon no one has ever seen.
the same 10 years old will possess most legendary Pokémon at some point and no one will bat an eye. the kid could destroy the world via: the stratosphere god, the land god, the oceans god, the emotions god, the willpower god, the mind god, the space god, the time god, the devil himself that's space and time gods' little brother, god, the other god, the other god's clone, and the two siblings that protect the atmosphere but everyone just assumes the kid won't just yeet the world into the sun.
you can call your rival Dickhead or some shit and no one will call their mother to ask why the fuck did she call her child like that.
you can call yourself Dickhead or some shit and no one will call your mother to ask
there's a shop in Paris where you can't enter unless you possess some shitty sense of style which is totally subjective. the stuff in the shop cost an eye, a kidney, and your kids' house
sparky Pokémon are rarer than fucking legendary god Pokémon
you can run for 58 years and never feel the need to eat, drink, pee, shit or sleep. your Pokémon will feel those needs tho
Kecleon is the real god here. no questions asked
you'd like to eat that malasadas wouldn't you uh???? no bitch you have to catch the same 3 Pokémon again for some reason while that police officer switches accents 5 times and makes you wonder if you accidentally started your game in Spanish. you don't even know Spanish. you'd played 95 hours so far in English but now he appears and fucks with your mind and memories
death ray exists and the immortal, 9 ft tall guy with a fairy friend created it to give his friend immortality. he killed a shit ton of Pokémon and people tho. and he was a king back then.
mafia gym leader, Scottish gym leader, geisha gym leader, actual Finnick from the hunger games series gym leader, nerdy boy gym leader, girl playing bass guitar whose dad is a failed actor and a sailor gym leader, a trio of chef twins gym leaders, everyone is a gym leader. no, you aren't, but you're a Pokémon, a ranger, a photographer, and you'll most likely end up saving the galaxy
shit that actually happens in pokemon:
a giant castle rises from the ground around the main government building. this is basically peta’s fault.
you ride a dragon-god into space to fight a meteor alien. this is plan b. plan a was to send the meteor alien to another dimension.
one guy tries to get rid of the oceans. one tries to get rid of dry land. What Happens Next Will Shock You.
a dude jumps straight out of the water onto an evil pirate ship, lowers the gangplank, then swims off to let a teenager deal with it.
there is a 1/3 chance that a runaway 11-year-old yakuza/mafia prince broke into a laboratory to steal an adorable plant creature.
you can buy a useless fish for several thousand yen from a shady salesman. this is actually a very good investment.
the devil, the god of death and the bringer of eternal nightmares all really really really like cake.
the space cultists would have won if dragon lucifer hadn’t showed up.
god is a goat, and if you take it to the right place, it will make you a baby god.
the most powerful trainer in the world (a 14-year-old with a pet rat) went up a frozen mountain for no apparent reason. he only comes down after you beat up his rat. this is absurdly difficult.
the effective ruler of the unova region is a magical catgirl space princess with a bunch of pet dragons.
there’s a nine foot tall guy wandering around. his height is the least interesting thing about him. and his best friend is a flower fairy.
