Battle of Star Trek - Batch#6 (featuring Janeway, Sato, O'Brien and Spock)
The Battle of Star Trek reaches Batch#6.  128 (slowly) being whittled down to 1 winner.  In this sixth batch, we have 16 new names for you sift through for your pleasure.
Behold - your choices are...
LEETA
Tumblr media
The lovely Chase Masterson (I can say lovely, as I've had the pleasure of meeting Chase on a number of occasions, and it's always a pleasure) played Dabo girl for a few seasons of STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE.  She dated Dr Bashir for a while, but proving it's personality and not looks that matter, she ended up marrying Ferengi Rom.
DR TOLIAN SORAN
Tumblr media
The villain of STAR TREK: GENERATIONS, Dr Soran is the guy that did the unthinkable... he killed Captain Kirk!  Malcolm McDowell played Soran, but admits he didn't want to be in the film, which is a shame, but just adds to the villainous aspect in my book.
DR BEVERLY CRUSHER
Tumblr media
Gates McFadden played the Chief Medical Officer for six seasons of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION (she missed season two) and four movies.  She was the mother of Wesley, and also acted as a potential love interest for the captain.
TOM PARIS
Tumblr media
One of the best helm officers Starfleet has to officer, Tom Paris was also one of the most misguided and found himself in jail. Captain Janeway recognised his expertise (piloting, knowledge of the Maquis) and brought him along for Voyager's mission... when Voyager got lost in the Delta Quadrant, Paris became one of the best crew members, pilots... and even ended up a married man and father. Robert Duncan McNeill played Paris for all seven seasons.
MILES O'BRIEN
Tumblr media
Whilst he may have been unnamed for a while, O'Brien actually featured in the pilot for TNG, had his extra role expanded, and eventually was promoted to series regular on DEEP SPACE NINE, as Chief of Operations.  Colm Meaney has clocked up a lot of hours on Trek, and Miles is seen as Trek's "everyman".
KHAN NOONIEN SINGH
Tumblr media
Ricardo Montalban first appeared as Khan in an episode of THE ORIGINAL SERIES, along with his genetically engineered super soldiers. This episode would lead, what is deemed the best of STAR TREK movies - THE WRATH OF KHAN, with Montalban's Khan noted as one of the best villains in Trek lore.   In recent years, Benedict Cumberbatch played an alternative version of the character in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS.
TRAVIS MAYWEATHER
Tumblr media
Anthony Montgomery played Travis Mayweather for the four years of ENTERPRISE, the ship's helmsman and (uniquely) a character born in space rather than on a planet.
DR KATE PULASKI
Tumblr media
Gates McFadden's Dr Crusher was axed from TNG after the fist season, and her replacement was Dr Pulaski.  As a character she seemed to be an attempt to embody the McCoy character from TOS - which is funny, because actress Diana Muldaur also appeared in TOS.  She was only in the second season, as McFadden returned in season three.
DR KATHRYN JANEWAY
Tumblr media
Kate Mulgrew played Trek's first female lead - Kathryn Janeway, desperate to get her Voyager crew back to Earth from the Delta quadrant. actually, Mulgrew was the second actress, the first being Genevieve Bujold, but this thing pan out and Bujold quit after a couple of days... good news for Mulgrew, and us.
NYOTA UHURA
Tumblr media
Nichelle Nichols played Uhura during three seasons and six movies.  She was an African American female on a hit TV series, which was quite a big deal in the 60s.  She considered quitting, but was talked out of it by Martin Luther King Jr.   In recent years, Zoe Saldana has played the character, in three movies... which finally confirmed Uhura's first name.
SPOCK
Tumblr media
One of the most iconic characters in all of STAR TREK.  Leonard Nimoy is just as iconic.  He was the only character in the pilot 'The Cage'  to appear in the rest of the three seasons, as well as six movies (Nimoy directing two of them), a couple of appearances in TNG, before returning to 'pass the torch' to the new actors in STAR TREK (2009).  You think Vulcan, you think Spock.
GOWRON
Tumblr media
Robert O'Reilly's Gowron is one of the most recognisable Klingons.  He played an important part in the Klingon story across TNG and DS9, as Chancellor - sometimes an ally, sometimes an enemy of main Klingon Worf.
HOSHI SATO
Tumblr media
One of the best linguists you can find, Hoshi Sato was an obvious choice for Archer's first Enterprise mission. Linda Park played her for all four seasons, and shone as the Mirror Universe version during the a couple of episodes in the final season.
LT. LESLIE
Tumblr media
A supporting cast member Eddie Paskey appeared in quite a number of episodes during the three seasons of TOS, appearing more times than Sulu believe it or not.  He played a few different characters, but most notable is Lt. Leslie.
JOSEPH SISKO
Tumblr media
Brock Peters had appeared elsewhere in Trek, but he's most prominent as Joseph Sisko in DS9.  He is, of course, Benjamin Sisko's father, and Jakes granddad.  He's always ready to offer his advice, opinion and some lovely food.
NEELIX
Tumblr media
From one chef to another.  Ethan Phillips played Talaxian Neelix throughout the seven seasons of Voyager.  An early guide to the Delta quadrant, Neelix was also a notable trader, chef and 'morale officer'.  He was god-father to young Naomi Wildman, and sometimes a security officer (if Tuvok really had no other option).
So there we are people... those are your 16 characters, and there's some big names in there.   I think I know who's going to win, but I've been wrong before.  Now get yourselves over to twitter, add procrastinalien and get voting for your favourites - you've got 3 days1

Day 1182: Kathryn O'Reilly
Born in Boston Massachusetts, USA. Kathryn was your average every day woman who worked as a cashier at a grocery store and lived in a tiny apartment less than a mile from where she grew up.
This all changed when by luck, she won a cruise that would take her along the Mediterranean. It was during this cruise, that she would happen upon the king of Malachar who wanting some time away from his duties, signed up for the cruise and took the vacation incognito, with none aware of his true identity.
The two of them hitting it off, the two of them fell in love and the king revealed his identity to Kathryn before inviting her to join him in Malachar. The Bostonite accepting in a heart beat, didn't even bother returning home to pack, heading straight to Malachar with him.
The two of them would eventually wed and Kathryn would come to love that vague European nation with its crown jewels, love of crumpets, and prevalence of tea. Declaring it her true home and the people of Malachar her people.
Tragedy would strike however for suffering from a medical complication, the king of Malachar abruptly passed away. And leaving no relatives, the crown by right of succession passed on to his wife, with Kathryn O'Reilly becoming the queen of Malachar.
However this was not a status quo that all were pleased with for many in the countries higher echelons bemoaned Kathryn as an outsider who was not fit to be on their throne. And plotted to see her cast out in disgrace.....

Lawyering AIs, Ways of Books, State Machines, and Futures Tools
AI vs. Lawyer -- 20 experienced U.S.-trained lawyers were pitted against the LawGeex artificial intelligence algorithm. The 40-page study details how AI has overtaken top lawyers for the first time in accurately spotting risks in everyday business contracts. (via Mashable)
Bestsellers vs. Most Read (John Birmingham) -- Books live in To-Be-Read piles. Some of those piles are digital books, and some of them are paper. But many, many, many readers wait until they’re in the mood for a particular kind of book before plucking it off their TBR pile. (Quote is actually by Kathryn Rausch)
