Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 1A Audios
Ahead of the Broadway Divas Tournament commencement later this evening, I have compiled a small collection of personally-recorded audio bootlegs pertaining to our first sixteen Divas. Unfortunately though my 55 GB folder of audios may be vast and varied, it is exhaustive, so apologies to those I have never seen (Cherry Jones Jan Maxwell, and Janet McTeer), and to those in two separate productions of Cinderella that I have since lost (Paula Leggett Chase and Rebecca Luker).
(Turns out there's a ten-audio limit, so see the reblog for Patricia Clarkson who's going to be all by her lonesome unless I can find those damn Cinderella bootlegs from over a decade ago.)

"Welcome to the Theatre": Diary of a Broadway Baby
Follies in Concert
June 20, 2024 | Transport Group Theatre | Carnegie Hall | Evening | Concert | Series | 2H 20M
Tumblr media
FOLLIES FOLLIES FOLLIES. THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY YEAR. THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY LIFE(?)
Last night, Carnegie Hall was New York's hottest gay club as every one of us turned up to weep over Sondheim's breathtaking score, played by a divine 30-piece orchestra. Fifty Broadway actors shared the roles and songs of this wonderful show, culminating in a lineup straight out of our wildest dreams.
Though we were robbed of a Donna Murphy triumph with "Could I Leave You?" due to filming schedule changes, we received the impromptu comedy show of the year as Beth Leavel grappled with a broken mic stand and brought the house down anyway.
Kate Baldwin as another eleventh-hour addition proved to be the best moment of the night. Her "Losing My Mind" will go down in history as one of the most divine we will ever hear. Not since Marin Mazzie has a theatre been so rapt, so silent, so in awe. She's always struck me as a Phyllis, but now proves she has the range.
Jennifer Holliday does what she wants, and what she wants was a smooth and seductive "I'm Still Here" full of gravitas even as she meandered far from the written notes and rhythms. She turned a five-minute showstopper into a nine-minute showstopper complete with a standing ovation to open up act two.
Karen Ziemba led six of our finest dancing Broads over sixty (or even seventy)(Mamie Duncan-Gibbs, Ruth Gottschall, JoaAnn M. Hunter, Dana Moore, Michele Pawk, and Margo Sappington) in a "Who's That Woman" original choreography to a standing ovation.
So many thrilling performances, one after the other. I am deeply in love with Barbara Walsh now, and it's honestly a crime she and Carolee Carmello were so underutilized by only having "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs" (Phyllis and Sally don't get much singing in that number, and it's a tragedy). I need to seriously contemplate the Barbara-Phyllis/Carolee-Sally dynamic immediately.
I am now dead. I have ascended. I will never come back to earth again. But the final tributes broke me. The reveal that Sondheim said in a private zoom reunion that Follies was his very favorite original score. The late Harvey Evans' epitaph. Original cast member Kurt Peterson ending the concert with "hey up there, way up there, what'd'ya say up there..." All of it underscored by Sondheim's brilliant work. I am in tears all over again.
Verdict: My Soul Transcended Space and Time

Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 1B
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Andréa Burns (1971) is probably best-known for her scene-stealing performance as Daniela in In the Height (2007), but her career has spanned the gamut, from Broadway, off-Broadway, regional, and beyond. Credits include the original company of Songs for a New World (1995), On Your Feet (2015), and most recently The Notebook (2024), which is now in previews on Broadway. She has described herself as "a Venezuelan Jewess from Miami who grew up loving Broadway." She is also best friends with fellow Diva Katie Finneran, whom she attended high school with.
Our oldest Diva at 83, Mary Beth Peil (1940) began her professional career as an acclaimed leading soprano in opera, not musical theatre. It was not until her forties that she made the transition as one of, if not the, first opera singer to move to musical theatre. After performing the titular role in Kiss Me, Kate, she joined the touring production of The King and I opposite Yul Brynner and followed it to Broadway where she earned her first Tony nomination. She has since gone on to an illustrious nearly-four-decades long musical theatre career with shows like Sweeney Todd (1992, 2002), Follies (2011), and Anastasia (2017).

"Every time I hear this woman sing, I'm newly astounded by her range. That upper register is crystal clear, gorgeous to listen to. She has been consistently booked and busy these last few years, especially, with two Encores! shows in the same season - scene stealing both - a lovely off-Broadway show, and now she's back on Broadway where she belongs."

"Let me be perfectly clear. I want to fuck this old woman. Mary Beth Peil is the oldest Diva in this tournament, and my admiration for her is inclusively carnal, in addition to loving her immense talent. I saw her in "Cornelia Street" in 2023, this horrid little off-Broadway show, and she was the only saving grace. I got to sit front row as she drunkenly danced less than two feet in front of me. She had on a flimsy little lingerie top and her cleavage practically spilled out into my face. I was in love."

Note
who are the top broadway actors you'd like to see on the gilded age? i was thinking about it tonight (bebe neuwirth, obviously, but there is a whole list)
I've already done some talking about Bebe Neuwirth as Lina Astor's steadfast lady's maid who is doing some plotting and scheming of her own, but it bears repeating. And look, they're dead, but Jan Maxwell and Marin Mazzie as lady's maid and mistress. I have a whole thing about them.
Top of the list of live actors is Mary Beth Peil. I need for there to be three former Anna Leonowens actresses in one shot, and I just love Mary Beth Peil. The show needs more old broads and it needs to let these old women actually do things and go places. Mary Beth would obviously be an Old Money doyenne. Deeply respected. So revered that even Mrs. Astor quietly defers to her.
Fill out Black Society more. For that, I want Heather Headley, LaChanze, Norm Lewis, etc.
I know Carolee Carmello couldn't even get an audition for season one, but let's give her a shot. Her and Kate Baldwin as distant relations to Anne Morris (whom we are bringing back for purely sapphic reasons).
The dream is Bernadette Peters, of course. In some kind of role that turns up and causes abject chaos.
And in that vein, I want Joanna Gleason in the van Rhijn household either as an impoverished relative or hell, why not give the downstairs staff a housekeeper? Why is there no official housekeeper in this traditional household? Anything that gets Debra Monk, Joanna Gleason, and Christine Baranski in the same scenes so I can have the Nick & Nora reunion I've dreamed of.
Finally. Laura Linney. Doing what, I don't know. Something involving Bertha so we can have all the husky-voiced women of Broadway together at last. Or as an Anne Morris relation to further play with how similar she looks to Katie Finneran if you put them in costume.
