So, what would a relationship between Kozakura & Sorawo look like? I think that's the fundamental question to figure out in order to understand what the SoraToriKoza ship looks like.
We know what it doesn't look like. It's not Accomplices - Kozakura cannot be the person going to the Otherside with Sorawo, she can't be attached for life even if they come to hate each other by their shared experiences. The fact that she can't be that is in fact the biggest detriment to that relationship.
It also can't be a Nue. I can't imagine Kozakura calmly going to the deep blue Otherside, experiencing it with Sorawo in complete and total trust, letting Sorawo change her and expose her deepest selves. Kozakura has already been changed by Sorawo's eye once, and she hated it, and she feared it, and she absolutely does not feel the same way about it that Toriko does from the getgo.
What else has the story proposed? Kozakura's self imposed role is the Adult of the group. She admonishes SoraTori for their youthful indiscretions and tries to push them to be more mature. She tries to teach them appropriate social skills and to be more future-oriented. She tries to give them opportunities to grow their relationship that they wouldn't otherwise have. This is definitely where Kozakura puts herself, though it's a weird dynamic for a romantic relationship, and one that Sorawo would definitely resent, given how much she hates seeming immature to others.
The other proposed answer is an Anchor. The person that SoraTori come home to, the thing that ties them to this side of the world. The thing they fight for, to make escaping the horrors and going home worthwhile, instead of the two losing themselves to the Otherside together. This is particularly interesting, because it's a role that is diametrically opposed to the other two kinds of relationships she can't take - Accomplices & Nue need the influence of the Otherside, because they're both about exploring and becoming a part of it. The Anchor, though, is about coming home, about maintaining relationships and attachments to humanity, about being the reason they don't become part of the Otherside
So, if Kozakura's proposed roles are Adult & Anchor... well, there is one character she is both of those things for. Kasumi. She's Kasumi's guardian, the Adult in her life making sure she's taken care of and growing & learning & gaining social skills and all that. But importantly, Kasumi is also someone who traverses the Otherside, much more often and with more ease than SoraTori do, and by taking her in, Kozakura is serving as her Anchor, as the person to return to at the end of the day. Kozakura has fulfilled both of the relationships the story has promised her by taking in Kasumi. She doesn't need them from SoraTori.
I think that statement is what actually kills this as a poly story - I don't think SoraToriKoza will happen because Kasumi resolves Kozakura's arc on her own. But, let's chase it anyway.
I would propose that the kind of relationship the three of them could have is Moms. Three Moms, living together to take care of their feral Otherside daughter. SoraTori can be Kasumi's connection to her Otherside heritage, and Kozakura her connection to humanity and this side. And they all three navigate that together, and fill Kozakura's lonely mansion with life together.
#Otherside Picnic#i do think that either this story ends in tragedy or it ends in SoraTori moving in with Kozakura#tho like im pretty lost on how this story ends after volume 7 - i would have bet anything that Satsuki's funeral would be the end#of the whole series before it happened and the story kept going#so qui sais#regardless i think it's more of a two-weird-Aunts-and-a-single-mom situation with the three#i also think any relationship between Kozakura and SoraTori that's not queerplatonic is weaker. but that's prolly just my bias lol#but yeah. Kasumi one-upping Toriko by having *three* moms is extremely funny to me lol#THE EXPERIENCE

the scene with kozakura and kasumi had me laughing so hard I started crying. first there was kasumi spouting nonsense that made her sound like an ai chatbot:
and then kozakura started dropping this ridiculous story about how she convinced businessmen to castrate themselves when she ghostwrote self-help books!?!?
all wrapped up with an incredibly bizarre description of an incredibly violent tv show!?!?
I don't think there's ever been a time in otherside picnic where I laughed this hard
I do want to live in the world kozakura was occupying where businessmen castrate themselves and get eaten by vultures on live tv though

Urasekai Picnic 9
Author: Iori Miyazawa
Illustrator: shirakaba
Label: Hayakawa Bunko JA
Release Date: 22 May 2024
My Score: 4/5
English Release: J-Novel Club is currently releasing this series in English as Otherside Picnic so please check it out if you are interested in the series.
The first and second chapters in this volume deal with the continuation of events from volume 8. The first has them searching for the girl and the dog. I have to be honest, I do not remember these characters much, so I didn't really care much for this story. I remember what happened with Toriko and Sorao last volume and I seem to have forgotten everything else. Still, this was an effectively creepy chapter with some great stuff towards the end of it. The second chapter doesn't have much spooky stuff. Sorao and Toriko go to tell Kozakura about the developments in their relationship, and see how she's getting along with Kasumi. The third chapter is the main event here, as it takes up the back half of the book and is where the cover comes from. In it, the girls are asked to help with a training camp for a military group to get them used to dealing with the Otherside. Luna also joins along as a test to see if she can be trusted to not go on a rampage if set free. If you are a Luna fan, you are going to love this chapter as it feels like the climax of her character arc. It's great stuff and seeing her camping with Sorao and Toriko was really fun.
Overall, another great volume of a great series that shows no sign of concluding any time soon. I heavily anticipate the next volume.

also now that that is done, my fanfic queue for the next... long time is roughly
third Kozakura fic, assuming book 8 doesn't completely wreck my plans for it. considering that this series diverged from canon after book 6, this wouldn't normally be an issue, but for all I know book 8 opens with 'as soon as Kasumi was all alone in the house with Kozakura, she cocooned her and laid eggs in her brain', which would in fact cause some issues for me
realistically, it'll be a miracle if I get that done before December, so I'm putting 'write my usual 2-3 short fics to post on Christmas' at this point in the list
tens of thousands of words of Sunshine stuff. I think I'm probably gonna try making the wedding into a standalone fic, and also writing however many chapters it takes to lead into that. that said, I have very little idea of what to do with the wedding, so if that state persists, I might kick that can down the road another year or two
the other novel-length Otherside Picnic fic I've had in my head for months
somewhere in this mess: more Songs of the Night Sparrow?? it's in a similar state to Sunshine where I kinda wanna wait until I can sit down and crank out a big update all at once. doubly so for this one though, because it's gonna take like two weeks to get my brain back into the right space for that

Otherside Picnic Volume 8 Thoughts - Part 6
File 25: Learn Your Lesson (cont.)
Sorawo having an impromptu therapy session with Runa was not on my bingo card for this volume.
As Runa pointed out, there is a precedent for Sorawo suddenly popping into her room out of thin air. If I recall from last week correctly, she was just talking to Kozakura about the present situation and naturally Kasumi was there. It wouldn’t be improbable to assume that Kasumi followed Sorawo to the Otherside and rescued her. The only other possibilities would be something on the Otherside doing it intentionally, or the Otherside itself reacting to Sorawo’s mental state, but that’s getting further into pure speculation.
If it were Kasumi, it wouldn’t be surprising she left Sorawo with Runa after what she witnessed during the T-san incident. Given the state Sorawo was likely in, Kasumi probably figured Runa would be able to calm and soothe her like the other Fourth Kinds.
At this point, I feel bad for Runa, finally seeing something interesting happen right in front of her, and not getting any of the context or the juicy details.
Can we talk for a minute about how Sorawo sees Toriko seemingly mad at her, and immediately thinks what she did with Runa was like cheating on her. Girl, all the signs point to the fact you’re in love with this girl and already acting like you’re already dating. The answer to your question is to recognise your existing relationship for what it already is!
“Have you learned your lesson?!” Well, there’s the title. Question is, what lesson is the mujina trying to teach Sorawo? Is it trying to bring her together with Toriko, or drive a wedge between them? Or is it a phenomenon that has no will or motive, and is merely a manifestation of Sorawo’s internal conflict? Either way, I’ve said this before, but this is very much her own fault. She shouldn’t put this on Toriko whom has been very open about how she feels and has been incredibly patient with Sorawo and her nonsense.
File 26: Accomplices No More
Finally, the main event. At this point, I am very concerned with Sorawo’s current mental state and the choices she’s about to make. Especially in matters of interpersonal relationships, she can be impossibly dense.
1
So the ghost story was interesting and very much Otherside-like, but applying it to the current situation with Toriko gives it a much more disturbing and chilling spin to it. Toriko has no other family or friends, so for her to disappear like she never existed would be all to easy to happen with the Otherside involved. Now I understand why Sorawo is going into crisis mode.
Oh, now she’s starting to get it! Part of what made the File where Sorawo went to Toriko’s university one of the better Files, is because it was one of the few times that Sorawo showed real interest in Toriko as a person. Like it was mentioned before, she was so hung up on calling themselves accomplices and saying they had “the most intimate relationship in the world”, Sorawo was blinded to the fact that their actual relationship was a work-in-progress, still in its infancy. They have a lot of shared experiences on the Otherside, but what about on the surface world. Sorawo did say near the beginning of this mess that it wasn’t uncommon for them to go a week without contact. Does that sound like a relationship between two people who are actually close? Now that it’s been said, it has been bothering me for a long time, which is why I was ecstatic that Kozakura pointed it out last time.
Can understand Toriko’s hesitation. The Otherside has tempted her with the very thing she wanted most on multiple occasions, last time was even with Sorawo’s doppelgänger.
Why would you block her number?! I get the thing about temptation, but what about in cases of emergencies, like this case?!
Seriously, Toriko, let her in already?! After running around in the rain so much, she’s almost certainly going to catch a cold now!
I think this is another one of those instances of Toriko getting ahead of herself again. I don’t know if she is a hopeless romantic, incredibly horny, or both (it’s probably both), but she tends to get carried away.
Now that it was just getting good, we have to wait another week! And we still have 3 more parts to get through so there’s still a fair bit more to come.

seeing some otherside picnic art and apparently sorao and toriko with the right art style can look an awful lot like sakurako and kasumi from futaribeya
#i'm not sure how to use this information for good and not evil#this is even more confusing with the other kasumi in mind
