Why is Mount Kailash a part of China?: Understanding How Mount Kailash Ended up in Chinese Territory
Tumblr media
Why is Mount Kailash a part of China?
Mount Kailash is one of the holiest places in the world for Hindus. It is the abode of Lord Shiva and it is said that visiting Mount Kailash is enough to wash away all the sins of even previous births.
A lot of the devotees have the question Where is Mount Kailash located?, the answer to Kailash Parvat Location is that Kailash Parvat is not exactly a part of China but Mt. Kailash and Mansarovar Lake is situated in Tibet, which is under the administrative rule of China.
The truth is that Mount of Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, Tibet were never a part of India. In the past few centuries too, it was never a part of any major Indian empire. Kailash was part of Nepal a long time back and was ruled by a Nepali King. It was the Nepali king who gifted the Kailash area to a Tibetan King as dowry for his daughter’s marriage and then it became a part of Tibet.
After that, it has always been Tibetan territory and when India got independence in 1947, it was still the case.
India has never had a problem with Tibet. We also had strong cultural and trade ties with Tibet for centuries and many Tibetan scholars came to India to study in its famed universities. But when the Red Army of China annexed Tibet in the 1950s, India stood mutely and perhaps that was a diplomatic blunder of considerable proportions. However, thousands of Indian Hindu pilgrims go on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra every year in peace and harmony.
Significance of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, Tibet.
The Hindu religion puts a lot of reverence on Lord Shiva, whom it considers to be the powerful, the strong and the willful. Hindus believe that Lord Shiva resides in Mount Kailash in a state of meditation. He lives there along with his divine consort, Parvati. Mount Kailash is considered to be the Shiva Temple in China.
It is considered that Lake Mansarovar tibet first originated in the mind of Lord Brahma, after which it came into physical existence. The Manasarovar Lake is said to be a place where Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva swim as swans during ‘Brahma Muhurta’ or the period of time just before dawn. This is a time period which is considered extremely auspicious in Hindu tradition.
If a devotee can do a ‘parikrama’ of Mount Kailash and take a dip in the holy waters of Lake Mansarovar Tibet, it is believed that all the sins he committed in his past 100 lives will be absolved and he will be a new man.
Going on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
Most Hindus wish to go on the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra at least once in their lifetimes considering how highly revered it is. Devotees from all over the world visit this Shiva temple in China and seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. If you are interested in knowing the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra cost, then you will be happy to know that different price points are available to suit the demands of every pocket.
Here are a few things to know about it
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra cost: The Yatra can be done via 3 to 4 routes including 2 routes that are conducted by the Ministry of External Affairs. The 2 routes conducted by the government will cost you between Rs 1,80,00 and Rs 2,50,00. There are 3 other routes available that are conducted by private tour operators, and they are either done via Lhasa, or via Kyirong border.
Trekking distance: How much trekking one has to do while on a trip is something a lot of people are worried about. Well, the Lipulekh pass route will have you trek approximately 200 km and will cost around Rs 1,80,000. The Nathu La pass route has only 40 km trekking and the rest of the journey is done by train or bus. It costs around Rs 2,50,000. Both of these routes have a selection procedure that is done by lucky draw and there will be a stringent medical check-up as well. On the other hand, if you were to choose a private tour operator such as Trip To Temples, the trekking distance will be incomparable. The Nepal route is the one that is far more convenient for pilgrims. There is a helicopter route that starts from Lucknow and takes between 5 and 11 days. The overland route from Kathmandu will take around 14 days. If time and convenience is the top-post priority, then the Nepal route is the best choice. The Nepal route is cost effective too. There is no lucky draw and since lesser trekking is involved, the medical procedure is lenient.
Best time to go: The best time to go on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is between the months of May and September.
Age restrictions: This is not a pilgrimage for small children. If the Nepal route is considered, people between the ages of 10 and 70 only are allowed to go; while the GOI route only takes travelers between the ages of 18 and 70 years considering the hazardousness of the destination.
Visa requirement: As Mount Kailash is under the administrative authority of China, one will need a passport and Visa to travel there. It is, however, a Group Staple / VISA. First, a permit gets issued and then VISA is applied for. Nepal does stamping on the passport when the yatra crosses through its borders to China.
Safety issues are a priority for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
Since the government route is longer and involves extra days and physical effort, there is a strict medical procedure done before one is allowed to go. In fact, a pilgrim can be sent back from any point during the Kailash Yatra if a medical condition arises.
However, if you are going by the Nepal route, then the private tour operator follows the acclimatization procedure and plans the Manasarovar Yatra accordingly so that pilgrims get adjusted to the high altitudes. A good part of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra gets done by helicopter and that further minimizes the medical risks.
In 2017, China refused the entry of 47 Indian pilgrims to the area who wanted to travel through the Nathu-la pass in Sikkim. The inclement weather and the bad road conditions were the reasons given for the denial of entry. As the trek is not an easy one, the safety and security of the pilgrims should be the first priority for government officials on both sides. Thousands of pilgrims brave the mountainous terrain every year to offer their respects to the heavenly abode of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati and get blessings in return.
If you are planning to go on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, it is a good idea to follow all government guidelines for safety and security purposes. Good-quality tennis shoes, a backpack and a walking stick are must-have items to carry. This is truly the journey of a lifetime, and will build memories that one can cherish all life.

Embarking on a Sacred Journey to Mount Kailash
The pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, often referred to as the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, involves circumambulating the mountain, known as the Kora or Parikrama. Spanning approximately 52 kilometers over three days, this journey is a test of physical endurance and spiritual devotion. Pilgrims undertake this sacred trek to attain spiritual liberation, guided by the belief that each step around Mount Kailash purifies the soul and brings one closer to enlightenment. Mount Kailash is not just a destination; it's a part of a larger spiritual circuit that includes the Char Dham Yatra in India. The Char Dham Yatra includes four sacred sites—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—each associated with important mythological narratives and considered essential for spiritual purification and divine blessings.
Tumblr media
The journey to Mount Kailash is not merely a physical expedition but a transformative experience that connects pilgrims with the divine forces of nature. Along the way, pilgrims encounter breathtaking vistas of the Himalayas, serene lakes like Lake Manasarovar, and a profound sense of peace amidst the rugged terrain. It's a pilgrimage that requires careful preparation for high altitudes, extreme weather conditions, and adherence to local customs and traditions.
Tumblr media
Whether you embark on this spiritual odyssey for personal enlightenment or seek the adventure of a lifetime, Mount Kailash promises an unforgettable experience. It's a place where spirituality merges with natural beauty, where ancient myths come alive, and where the soul finds solace in the midst of the Himalayan peaks.
Prepare yourself for the journey of a lifetime to Mount Kailash, where every step is a prayer and every moment brings you closer to the divine essence of existence.

Embarking on the Spiritual Sojourn: The Unparalleled Significance of Manimahesh Yatra
Nestled amidst the enchanting landscapes of the Budhil Valley, the Manimahesh Lake stands as a sacred haven, beckoning pilgrims on the auspicious eighth day of the light half of the moon in the month of Bhadon. This divine pilgrimage, known as the Manimahesh Yatra, unfolds in the pristine Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh, drawing devotees from far and wide. As pilgrims make their way to this celestial abode, the journey becomes not only a physical traverse but a soul-stirring odyssey.
The Mystique of Manimahesh Lake:
Situated at a breathtaking altitude of 13,000 feet, the Manimahesh Lake cradles at the base of the majestic Kailash peak, standing tall at 18,564 feet. This celestial water body resonates with spiritual energy, and on the hallowed day, pilgrims gather to partake in a sacred fair, immersing themselves in the purifying waters of the lake. Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of this divine sojourn, is believed to manifest in a rock formation resembling a Shivling on the Kailash peak.
Legends and Sacred Beliefs:
The legends surrounding Manimahesh add layers of mystique to this sacred journey. Mount Kailash, deemed invincible, holds the allure of Lord Shiva’s divine presence. Stories echo of a shepherd turned to stone, along with his flock, when attempting to scale the unconquerable peak. Another tale tells of a snake transformed into stone after a failed ascent. The visibility of the Kailash peak is considered a blessing, and cloud-covered summits symbolize the Lord’s displeasure.
Rituals and Ceremonies:
The Manimahesh Yatra is not merely a physical trek; it is a spiritual odyssey infused with rituals and ceremonies. Pilgrims commence the journey with the procession of the “Holy Chhari,” wherein sacred sticks are carried on shoulders amid hymns in praise of Lord Shiva. The trek encompasses stops at Gauri Kund and Shiva Krotri, where women and men, respectively, take holy dips before reaching the revered Manimahesh Lake.
The Spiritual Significance:
Undertaking the Manimahesh Yatra is believed to purify the soul and body. The journey, though challenging, unfolds amidst the serene beauty of the lake nestled against the snow-covered Kailas Mountains. The spiritual aura envelops pilgrims during the “holy Chhari” procession, resonating with divine energy as they traverse the sacred route.
Routes to Divine Tranquility:
Pilgrims embark on the Yatra through various routes, each offering a unique experience. The Bharmaur-Hadsar route, starting at Bharmaur village, and the Parikrama route via Kugti Village, known for its challenging yet picturesque trails, provide diverse perspectives of the pristine landscapes. For those seeking a quicker path, a helicopter ride from Bharmour village to Gauri Kund is an option during the Yatra.
In the realm of divine pilgrimages, the Manimahesh Yatra emerges as an extraordinary odyssey, weaving through the heart of the Budhil Valley in Himachal Pradesh. As pilgrims from diverse corners of the world converge on this sacred sojourn, the question arises: What makes the Manimahesh Yatra the epitome of spiritual exploration and a journey like no other?
Tumblr media
Sacred Abode of Lord Shiva:
At the core of the Manimahesh Yatra lies the pristine Manimahesh Lake, cradled at an awe-inspiring altitude of 13,000 feet. This celestial water body, framed by the majestic Kailash peak towering at 18,564 feet, is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva. The journey, therefore, unfolds not merely as a physical trek but as a soul-stirring quest to connect with the divine.
Mystical Legends and Spiritual Energy:
The Yatra is steeped in legends that add a layer of mystique to the pilgrimage. Mount Kailash, standing invincible, holds the allure of Lord Shiva’s divine presence. Tales of a shepherd turned to stone and a snake transformed into stone after failed attempts to scale the unconquerable peak echo through the hills. The spiritual energy that envelops the region heightens the pilgrimage’s significance, creating an atmosphere of reverence and awe.
Rituals and Ceremonies:
The Manimahesh Yatra is not a mere trek; it is a spiritual journey punctuated by rituals and ceremonies. The procession of the “Holy Chhari,” where sacred sticks are carried amid hymns in praise of Lord Shiva, marks the commencement of the Yatra. Pilgrims partake in sacred dips at Gauri Kund and Shiva Krotri, adding layers of purity to their spiritual endeavor. The rituals performed throughout the night at the Manimahesh Lake deepen the spiritual connect, creating an atmosphere of devotion and transcendence.
Spiritual Purification:
Undertaking the Manimahesh Yatra is believed to purify not only the body but also the soul. The challenging trek, set against the backdrop of the snow-covered Kailas Mountains, becomes a transformative experience. Pilgrims find solace and spiritual rejuvenation amid the serene beauty of the lake, making it more than a physical journey—it becomes a pilgrimage of the heart and spirit.
Diverse Routes for Varied Experiences:
The Yatra offers multiple routes, each presenting a unique perspective of the surrounding landscapes. The Bharmaur-Hadsar route, starting at Bharmaur village, showcases the cultural richness of the region. The Parikrama route via Kugti Village, with its challenging trails, unfolds panoramic vistas and an immersive experience in nature. For those seeking a quicker yet thrilling option, the helicopter ride from Bharmour village to Gauri Kund provides an aerial view of the picturesque terrain.
Cultural and Natural Splendor:
Beyond its spiritual significance, the Manimahesh Yatra introduces pilgrims to the rich cultural tapestry of Himachal Pradesh. The journey from Bharmaur to Hadsar unfolds the cultural heritage of the region, while the trek through picturesque villages and lush green valleys becomes a cultural immersion. The Yatra seamlessly blends spiritual exploration with the exploration of the region’s natural beauty.

What sets the Manimahesh Yatra apart is the unparalleled tranquility it offers amid the lap of nature. The Manimahesh Lake, surrounded by the grandeur of the Kailas Mountains, becomes a sanctum of peace and spiritual serenity. The journey becomes a harmonious blend of the spiritual and the natural, allowing pilgrims to seek solace and introspection.

The allure of the Manimahesh Lake, surrounded by the grandeur of the Kailas Mountains, invites seekers of spiritual tranquility. As the Yatra unfolds each year, it reaffirms the spiritual connection of devotees with the divine, making it a revered pilgrimage that echoes with the celestial energy of Lord Shiva.

Lake Mansarovar
Lake Mansarovar in Tibet is one of the holiest lakes situated in Tibet. It is located just 20 km away from the holy Mount Kailash. A large fresh-water body, the lakes hold great religious significance for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bons alike. ‘Mansarovar’ is derived from two words ‘Manas’ (mind) and Sarovar (pond). It can be said to be the ‘Lake of Consciousness’. As per the holy Hindu scriptures, the lake was first visualized in the mind (manas) of Lord Brahma before it materialized on Earth. The Lake Mansarovar Parikrama is believed to liberate one from the sins committed in past births. Buddhists believe Kailash to be the father of the Universe and Lake Mansarovar as the mother.
Yam Dwar
Yam Dwar or the Gateway of the God of Death is another popular tourist attraction located near Kailash Mansarovar. It marks the entrance of the abode of Lord Shiva. The word Yam means Yamraj—’ the god of death’ and Dwar is called the gate. It is believed to be the base camp for the Kailash Parvat Yatra and Parikrama. Tibetans refer to Yam Dwar as the ‘Tarboche’. It is believed that crossing through the gate and performing Kailash Parikrama ushers in the manifold of blessings in the lives of pilgrims.
Tumblr media
Rakshastal Lake
A saltwater lake located in Tibet, Rakshastal lies west of the holy Lake Mansarovar and south of Mount Kailash. The lake covers a huge area of 250 km at an altitude of 4,575 meters. The lake is also known as ‘Ravan Tal’. According to a long-held belief, the king of demons—Ravana performed deep meditation on the banks of Rakshastal Lake to seek powers from Lord Shiva. Rakshastal is a crescent-shaped Lake and is regarded as a symbol of ‘‘Darkness’. The lake appears to be bluish-green coloured. The lake's salinity and lack of greenery in its surroundings are believed to give off negative energies.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Tour
A bizarre occurrence. a magnificent epiphany a startling realization: The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which takes you to an altitude of 21,788 feet and transforms your life forever, is a journey, not a destination, up Mount Kailash. During this expedition, you will climb imposing peaks, traverse difficult terrain, and experience a number of isolated moments. You triumph over this mental turmoil while facing constant physical difficulty and come home a victor, gleaming with invincibility. The story of this metamorphosis will make for best-seller material because of its palpable evolution.
For Hindus, Mount Kailash is the house of Lord Shiva, for Buddhists, it is the residence of Buddha Demchok, for Bon adherents it is the seat of spiritual strength, and for Jainites, it is the spot where Rishabhadeva, the founder of the Jain religion, reached Nirvana. Thousands of pilgrims undertake this therapeutic journey, but only the most driven ones succeed in finishing it. And we have no doubts about your outstanding motivation if you are reading about it with such focus.
The Manasarovar Parikrama of the kailash mansarovar yatra, in which you walk around the mountain to atone for all of your sins, is the main incentive for people to undertake this taxing journey of the Kailash mansarovar yatra tour. This location is sometimes referred to as the entrance to Moksha or Nirvana. Once you get to Lake Manasarovar, the highest glacial lake close to Mount Kailash, consider 70% of this ritual to be finished. The trip concludes with the final 30. The Adi Kailash team helps you with everything you need to reach Kailash Mansarovar.
You pass through some of the most breathtaking vistas, tranquil mountain communities, unusual mountain terrains, and high passes while on the walk. Your ascent to the Derapukh, a significant route milestone, is worth every ounce of energy expended on the difficult but thrilling ascent.
You’ll have a million excuses to give up due to ferocious winds, bad weather, and difficult circumstances. No one, however, claimed that getting to God would be simple. You might describe the fortitude to keep moving forward in your heart as transcendental, yet every obstacle in your path has a solution that materializes in front of you just when you think you have reached a dead end.

Halesi Mahadev Yatra by Kailash Parikrama
Among the most ancient and holiest places of Nepal, The Haleshi is one of them. It is very popular as The Pashupatinath of the eastern Nepal. It is situated at the hilly region of the country in between the holy rivers Dudh Koshi to the right and Sunkoshi to the left. The temple is situated at the top of a small hill inside a beautiful cave. There lie other numerous small beautiful caves too. Everybody, who reaches there, can’t resist themselves without appreciating its location, beauty as well as its natural inheritance. This is the place, which is famous for its historical, religious, cultural and tourism importance. Here, the image of the god is inside the cave, which is full of natural beauty. Inside the cave is dark and there are bats flying here and there. It is also a kind of pride for the people living there, as it is as famous as other temples like the Pashupatinath, the Lumbini etc. even internationally. It is the natural cave, which lies in 4the remote hilly region and is believed to be in existence since 6000 years. It is the place full of natural beauty and cultural inheritance. It is popular among the Hindus as well as the Buddhists all over the world.
Tumblr media
The place is perhaps not an artificial creation but a gift of nature. There are three mysterious caves, which are believed to be the three eyes of lord Shiva. as we see in the first cave, we see an image of lord Shiva which is called as Haleshwar Mahadev. In the second cave there is an image of Nandi. So, the cave is know Basaha Gupha. And there is an image of bhairav an in the third cave. Among these three mysterious caves the first one with the image of lord Shiva is the main part of the temple. After marching down 25 to 30 steps down the stairs at the walls of the cliff there is a big red stone which is worshiped as Gaura Parbata. It is believed to be a joint image of Gauri and Parbati. This cave is in the depth of about 300ft. At the bottom of the cave there is the image of Mahadev made of stone. It is about two and half feet long. One can reach to the end or to the image of the god after walking 102 stairs made of the stones arranged well in the stairs. The stairs are wide enough to walk for a 4/5 people at a time. It is said that the base of the statue ‘Linga’ of Mahadev which is nearly two and half feet high up from the ground but the base of the statue leads to the next cave through a small hole.It is called Basaha Gupha. The base of the statue is full of water. even under the ground. The main statue of the temple is fenced with the cement pillars It is situated in a square at the middle. Above the statue in the cliff there is an image of cows’ udder from which white drops fall on to the statue. It is believed that Kamadhenu (Cow in the heaven who can fulfills the desires wishes if asked ) is worshiping the god by offering her milk.
People perform various religious Pujas. (Rudri, Laghu Rudri, Maha Rudri, Aati Rudri) in the temple during different festivals. Some people do such performances to get peace, spiritual happiness and prosperity. The whole temple flutters with the Vedic Mantras at the time of Puja. Those who are poor, have no children and are suffering from sarrow come here and promise to offer something if their wishes and expectation are fulfilled. After their wishes are fulfilled they get back again and offer the god what they have promised to offer. They offer the god one hundred thousand holy threads and leaves of wood apple or by performing prayer and puja.
This is the famous religious destination not only of the district but of the whole Eastern Development Region along with god mahadeva there are other god and goddess such as parbati The cave is full of various entrances and images of different gods. Each and every stone of the cave is full of natural artistic images and the holes in the different corner. An angel stands as attractive doors of the cave. The whole cave is like a big stone which is beautifully carved by the hands of a good artist who worked hard to make it so beautiful. This is one of the most beautiful creations of nature more artistic and pure than the artificial creations. Different images and the different doors in the cave carry their own significance. Among them there are five doors, which are more important than the other doors. They are believed to do judgement whether the people coming here are religious or not. The doors are The Haleshi temple is situated in the Khotang district of eastern Nepal . This is a small hilly area full of natural beauty. The location of the place itself is beautiful. One the other hand, the beautiful and mysterious natural caves; full of different natural images, look as if the stone carving artist have donelt carefully taking a lot of time. Here, the images are all inside the caves which themselves are mysterious.
Ghoptay Dwar: This door is named after its location. Ghoptay Dwar is a nepali word which means downward facing door. It is located to the Northwest of the image of the god. People enter here from the South and come out of the North. It is about 9 feet long.
Janma Dwar: A little further the Ghoptay Dwar to the east after walking 6 feet sliding way we can get to another door where one is allowed to enter first by putting one leg and the head carefully. It is Janma Dwar which means the birth door
To the East-South of the image of the god, there is an another door called Pap Dwar. In this door people enter from the east and come out hardly from the West.
Dharma Dwar: After praying the Haleshwar Mahadev when we move forward in the West-North there are two 9/9 feet square shaped stones with a small gap between them. There is a tradition of going in and coming out from that gap. This gap is called Dharma Dwar.
Swarga Dwar: There is another famous door called as Swarga Dwar. Ii looks really amazing if it is viewed from Yagya Shala , close to pap dwar. People can’t reach there, as it is located really in a difficult place where there is no way to get through. It may have been named Swarga Dwar as Swarga in Nepali Means heaven where no people can reach and live in.
There is a legend that people who are really religious can easily enter the four dwars. But those who are not cannot enter any of these dwars.
Nature is really beautiful, mysterious and amazing as there are different things that look like artificial stones finished after a long hard work by a stone-carving artist. So not only religious people but also the people who believe only in scientific evidences also can’t resist themselves without praising the beauty of the cave after watching its mechanism as well as the surrounding.
Basahasthan is the second cave of the place. It is also called as Basaha Dulo(hole). It is to the west of the temple of Shiva. The breadth of this cave is 45 to 50 feet and the length is about 220 feet. As we enter the cave from the west and reach 220 feet, we may find a hole there from where we can see the sky. Close to the hole there is about 80-85 feet wide jungle called ‘Kailash’. People spend whole night inside this cave during festivals.
Another important and amazing thing about the cave is that inside the Basaha hole one can see the sky from there, if people stand facing towards the sky open handed asking for milk to ‘Kamdhenu’ shouting ‘Dudh Dau Mai’ milk like white drops fall in some people’s hands and water drops in some other’s. According to the legend People who get milk like white drops are believed to be lucky and religious and in the same way those who get water drops are believed to be unlucky and not religious. So people who get white drops like milk thinks themselves lucky and get proud but the people with water drops think they are unlucky and get shy in sorrow.
People believe that the big stone, which is at the entrance of the Basahasthan, is Basaha (Sandhey) and some say it as the bones of Brikashur. In the same way in front of it, there is a stone shaped conch which is believed to be the Gauri Sankha that Vishnu blowed after killing Bhashmashur and the stone near the Gauri Sankha is believed to be the head of Bhashmashur. There is a small place near the door where one can hide himself is believed to be the same place where lord Vishnu had hidden himself with the aim to kill Brikashur.
