Can you post more of your thoughts on ai art, I’m intrigued by your comparison to readymades
I don't have super concrete thoughts about ai art, I guess my stance in general is that it's a new tool that is not going anywhere and I actually think many artists past would've loved the opportunity to so honestly and instantly peer into our collective electronic subconsciousness, to pull out the literal stastistical averages of the ways we categorize things by first teaching them to a machine. We can now SEE the proverbial electric sheep of which androids dream.
my comparison to readymades is that like, so many of the arguments about AI art not being art are because it's some sort of frankenstein amalgamation of already-made imagery and pieces [this is functionally incorrect imo, but a lot of opponents of AI in art don't actually know how it works and argue thusly] and i'm just like.. one of the most prolific sculptors, marcel duchamp, literally took manufactured objects and simply put them in displays and called them art allllll the way back in 1914, and it's fucking NUTS to me that this kinda thing is still causing such fierce debate. Like have we not finally realized that art is functionally undefinable? Saying something is or isn't art is complete nonsense. Just say it's bad art, or lazy art, or harmful art.
Then people have the issue with work being stolen to train the AIs.. I think this is valid to an extent, but I also think it's grounds for a wonderful philosophical discussion. For instance--what exactly is wrong about an AI being trained on other people's work? Is it wrong if I learn to draw by referencing artists I love? do I have to get the consent of every artist who inspires me?
#I don't claim to know the answers of the questions I'm asking at the end there btw and have no agenda#Just trying to inspire actual discussion instead of just panicked fearmongering 'put eveyrthing back in pandoras box'
