Josiah walked into the locker room for probably the tenth time that day. He had no idea why one of the managers thought this stupid mirror inscription would be a good addition to the atmosphere at the gym. He could swear the extra cocky and dumb fuckboys walking around today were somehow summoned by the new inscription. Well, Josiah didn’t necessarily believe there was a direct correlation, but he did subscribe to the idea that you invite into your space the energy that you want.

That easygoing and positive demeanor made him one of the more popular trainers at the gym. Sure, he had a good physique, but it was because he cared for his body and health, and he thrived at the gym, teaching those guiding principles to others. On the other hand, staring at the latest patron’s use of the new mirror provoked his principles, reviving the reconsideration of his role in the toxifying workplace again.

So this is just dumb and self indulgent but, does anyone have any female D&D/BG characters that would maybe like to get together with Josiah? I wanna draw some spicy stuff with him and he is in need of partners.

Because absolutely no one demanded it but I wanted to talk about this anyway:

Most of the designs for my main cast are holdovers from the earliest version of the story, written when I was fourteen and still deluding myself about drawing.

The character that would become Rachel was originally an authorial insert, so she basically looked like fourteen-year-old me. Later on, I hated having a self-insert, and it took me a while to decide to revamp her into someone who does have things in common with my younger self but has been allowed to take on an identity of her own. This included giving her strawberry blonde hair, making her look more like my youngest sister, or Dorothy Gale in John R. Neill's illustrations, which pairs well with some visual associations of Rietta and Ozma that I wanted to make.

Rietta has lots of dark curly hair because of some drawings I had made as a child of someone called Rietta fitting that description. No idea what that original context was, but I liked it enough to reuse both name and hair. I haven't changed because it's become an iconic part of how I picture her, and the springy curls reflect her personality so well. Her having some Mediterranean features (thanks to her pseudo-Italian mother) was a later development as I better defined the nations' cultures. It's a way of visually emphasizing her outsider status despite being the queen.

Delclis has reddish-brown hair for incredibly dumb reasons. I'll spare you the full story, but the short version is the original incarnation of the story, which was overtly fantastical in painfully derivative ways, drew from some thing my siblings and I made up as kids, including a concept of my brother's of a nation where the monarch take as a ceremonial name the name of a type of snake. That was a thing in Corege in the earliest draft, and Delclis's ceremonial name was...Copperhead. So I literalized it and gave him reddish-brown hair. That horrific detail got dropped, thank goodness, but Delclis's design stayed and morphed into his having a coloring and build and features that I could tie to his love of plants. Hair like the color of certain trees in autumn. Much better. It also contrasts him with the rest of his family, showing his disconnect from all of them.

I originally made Elystan a dark-haired puny little person as a vague nod to illustrations of Eustace, because original Elystan was just there to be a bratty character with a redemption arc (badly executed!). That connection is practically nonexistent now, but I like the visual of him with the high contrast between hair and complexion, a bit eerie-looking. The black hair, pale skin, and blue eyes also accidentally make him resemble a) a character from Tenthragon and b) quite a few comic book characters, and I'm fine with that. His originally being described as very short and thin was what led to the creation of his health issues as the story developed into what it is now. It makes him very different visually from his father, Delclis, and Josiah, and that's necessary.

Amarantha's design didn't have any references or reasoning behind it. I was fourteen and drew a brown-eyed brunette probably because that was my description. Her distinctive hairstyle comes from a later attempt to ground the story in more historicity. At this point, it was set in a pseudo-1540s, so Amarantha's hairstyle was inspired by styles meant to be contained under a cap. Fortunately, it translated decently well into the current setting and has become a visual symbol of her uptightness.

Tamett originally had a very bland brown-haired design with no distinctive features, because I didn't bother to put much thought into him. Later, I realized I needed a visual contrast to Josiah and made him blond. I can't remember if I did that before or after deciding he was from pseudo-Scandanavia. (His Noriberrian heritage is actually a very recent development.) The blandness of his design has become a feature, reflecting his role as professional shadow.

The basic designs of the Liennese royal family came from a royal family in an imaginary city that my brother and I created as kids; beyond that, there wasn't a lot of thought put into Josiah's design. The more distinctive features came later. It's important to me that he look very ordinary, not conventionally "good-looking," to emphasize that he's not as perfect and exceptional as he has been raised to think he is, and it's significant that he more strongly resembles his father but the features he gets from his mother will become more prominent with character development. His greater height and larger build also make him almost a comedic visual contrast with Elystan, which is fun to picture.

So I was playing roblox with some friends on call

We played Murder Island 2, I ended up thinking about saving up to buy Hendrik but a friend on the call decided to recommend me different characters instead that looked better to them, one of them was Josiah. I ended up getting Josiah when I got enough.

Frances Ha (2012) dir. Noah Baumbach. It tells a beautiful narrative of coming of age in your twenties.

Billie and Jean. Another chill, kinda dumb podcast but it's something fun to play in the background. Gives some good laughs.

Titanic (1997) dir. James Cameron. Needed something after watching Avatar TWoW.

Mileage (2022) created by Jennifer Wu (PM) Kym Santiana (PM) Ruyee Lu (PM) Christopher Hsueh Joy Zhou Miranda Li Nicole Taylor-Topacio Ruby Saysanasy Saul Benavides. My friend made a really awesome short film for her 3rd year! Please check it out. The music suits it so well and the story is very exciting!

Cruella (2021) dir. Craig Gillespie. I wasn't going to watch this but Josiah mentioned the same person directed I, Tonya (2017) which I thought was great. I watched with a dog that I was dogsitting.

Goodfellas (1990) dir. Martin Scorsese. A pretty good story. I think the acting in it was great as well. The slurs threw me SO off guard.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) dir. Joel Crawford. I'm so excited for Shrek 5. This was great. Love how Spiderverse is bringing about a new age of animation.

The White Lotus, Season 1 (2021). I'm only watching this for Jennifer Coolidge.

Goldie’s relationships!

1. Yoshi: He is her father as I have stated in a previous post and she usually listens to him a lot. He was the one who told her to not see her ability to not be noticed as a curse but as a strength. He is usually very calm with her and really cares about her and if anyone was to harm her, he would make sure that person be dead.

2. Jenny: She is her mother, she respects her a lot and, frankly, is intimidated by her a bit. Despite them being total opposites, she loves her mom and looks up to her, admiring just how strong and fearless she is.

3. Genesis: She is her older cousin, her only female cousin really, and they get along great. Even if Gen is more laid back and tired than Goldie, they both have wild imaginations, and they love to tell each other every idea that comes to mind. Also, prank partners.

4. Josiah and Zane (Z be my friend’s OC): They are both cousins of hers, two of who she adores. She likes jumping on their backs to see if they can handle her weight. So far, only Zane can. She likes pulling harmless pranks on them, like putting bows on their heads while they are asleep or covering their notebooks in sticky notes.

5. Randy and Howard: Absolute dorks. Has been friends with them since day 1. Cringes a lot when they do dumb plans to try and become popular. When the Fish Cage thing happened, she almost cried when she saw them in speedos. She would have went to them after they embarassed themselves but the Fish Cage was to comfortable. No, she did not enter with permission, she snuck in. I mean, she didn’t have to since she daughter of a famous businesswoman and could have gotten in easily but where is the fun in that?

6. Mikey (Another of my friend’s OCs): Goldie loves her 5 year old cousin, always willing to spend time with him and let her inner child have fun. She often uses her ability to not get noticed to get Mike and her some cool stuff. She likes to spoil the kid!

7. Camellia and Matthew (Also my friend’s OCs): Parents of Genesis, Zane, Josiah and Mike, Camellia being Jenny’s younger sister and Matthew being Jenny’s brother-in-law, making them Goldie’s auntie and uncle. Goldie enjoys seeing them, even if things might get a little awkward with her mom and aunt due to past conflicts. She loves hearing uncle Matthew’s stories of the places he has been to cause of his job as a musician. She may not see him much but she considers him the best uncle!

Friend is called Ikari-Shinsei and they are the most fun person ever and they make the best characters! Just wanted to point that out! See ya!

Maren Laughlin’s life just took a left turn. When she rejects her boyfriends proposal, she quits her decades long job as a park ranger and moves back to her childhood playground to check in on her inheritance, a decrepit bait shop in Northern Wisconsin. Josiah Cole runs the resort that abuts Maren’s bait shop. A childhood best friend of her brother’s they used to hang out as children but life moves on and he’s now divorced, with two great kids. He’s happy with his life but when Maren moves in next door he starts catching feelings. She’s beautiful, funny, and his kids love her and their friendship is just so easy. Despite her brothers warnings, Joe and Maren are in the middle of a relationship without even trying. I love these adult novels by Erin Hahn. She describes Joe and Maren’s relationship as just so easy to fall into, and this book was exactly the same. I started reading, and before I knew it I had developed feelings for these characters in part because of the easy flow of the story, but also because of the setting and the kids. This story was a joy and I relished reading Maren and Joe’s story. There isn’t a great romance novel if there’s not a hint of conflict and we do have a couple of storylines that create that dynamic for our duo. Maren’s brother is Joe’s best friend, and he doesn’t hesitate to warn Maren off of catching feelings for Joe. He’s also a bit of a dope to Maren and gave the reader a person to get frustrated at that wasn’t our hero or heroine. Joe also isn’t the swinging single guy, he comes as a package with his two kids who added a lot to the story- as well as a dumb ex- spouse that the reader could also focus some energy on hating. It was only Maren and Joe’s feelings that were easy breezy, these conflicts gave the story a lot of heart in their conclusions. I’ve read the other two novels in this stand alone series. I say stand alone and series in the same sentence because Maren’s two best friends were the heroines from the previous two adult novels by this same author. It’s always nice to see how other characters you’ve read have advanced their storylines and I welcomed that brief peek. Despite their reoccurance, you can read this novel as a stand alone and not miss a thing but I bet when you’re done, if you hadn’t read the other two novels you’re going to want to pick them up and catch up! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review and it was honest!
