Inquisitor as a companion: Jonathan Trevelyan
Tumblr media
Picture made in artbreeder.com from a game screenshot :))
Trend started by @little-lightning-lavellan it's an amazing one and I had loads of fun with it! Thank you for the template!
Is your OC a Companion in the Dragon Age series? What would it be like for a player to select them to join their party for quests (or romance them, perhaps? 👀)
@noire-pandora you asked to be tagged so you brought this on yourself :)))
You have selected Jonathan Trevelyan to join your party!
Race: Human
Gender: male
Class: Rogue/Archer
Specialization: Artificer
Under the cut because it's too damn long!
Background
Jonathan Trevelyan (born 9:15 Dragon) is a human noble, a good marksman, surprisingly skilled craftsman and attempted Chantry cleric's apprentice.
Jonathan has lead a life of priviledge as the sixth son of the Trevelyans, an ambitious noble family from Ostwick. After noticing his agreeable personality and natural talent for obtaining information without causing suspicion, his eldest sister sends him as a representative of their family to various potential noble allies and trade partners around Thedas, especially Antiva, Nevarra and Orlais. As their family's liaison, Jonathan discovers his passion for exploration and history, growing increasingly detached from his home in the Free Marches.
(The next three or so paragraphs do not appear due to not wanting to spoil a WIP fic lack of codex entries).
In 9:40, he decides to join the Chantry in Denerim, to be sworn in as a Brother, under the tutelage of his uncle, an important Chantry cleric.
Involvement
Dragon age: Inquisition
After the Conclave, Jonathan becomes increasingly curious about the newly declared Inquisition, after hearing of the good work they are doing to restore order in the Hinterlands. Jonathan can be recruited after the Chantry address and subsequent leaving of the Templars in Val Royeaux during The Threat Remains, after the Inquisitor exchanges a few words with Revered Mother Hevara. When the Inquisitor tries to walk away from the stage, Jonathan will appear as part of the Chantry delegation. He will express his admiration for the Inquisition doing something to solve the current crises, and will offer to leave the Chantry in order to join the effort. If the Inquisitor recruits him, he will be available to the party once they return to Haven once. He will no longer be wearing his Chantry clothing. If the Inquisitor refuses to recruit him, they will hear from a runner that a Trevelyan has joined their troops once they relocate to Skyhold.
At Haven, Jonathan can be seen sitting by the bonfire near Varric, fiddling with his arrows. Once in Skyhold, he can be found in the armory next to a table with various metal pieces and projects in different stages of completion. He will warn the Inquisitor not to approach the table or touch anything on it.
Josephine's runner will comment on Jonathan's status from various missions he gets sent on while the Inquisitor is away, such as liaising with various noble houses and chantries, or ensuring supplies are delivered to various Inquisition camps around Thedas.
Bringing Jonathan along will allow the Inquisitor to open locks that require Deft Hands, Fine Tools without purchasing the perk (a little OP? Perhaps). Jonathan can unlock more information from noble NPCs, and he will automatically collect 5 additional scandalous secrets if brought during Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts.
Approval and Romance
In terms of approval, Jonathan appreciates shows of mercy and empathy, and will prefer complicated solutions to problems if they result in less victims. He will disapprove of what he considers unnecessary violence, but will never comment negatively on the Inquisitor's choices. The Inquisitor will gain a lot of approval if they tell him about themselves, and will gain a slight disapproval if they lie. Refusing to share information will not yield any approval changes.
If the approval is high, Jonathan will at some point gift the Inquisitor a weapon upgrade that he crafted with the help of Harritt and Dagna.
Jonathan's personal quest is (REDACTED, OH BABY REDACTED because of fic spoilers). There are four possible outcomes to this quest:
[REDACTED] and Jonathan Greatly Approves, also the Inquisitor gains [REDACTED]
[REDACTED] and Jonathan Greatly Approves
[REDACTED] and Jonathan Greatly Disapproves (if in a romance, Jonathan will break up with the Inquisitor on the spot and leaves the party temporarily)
[REDACTED] and Jonathan leaves the party permanently, never to be heard from again. Further dialogue with Leliana reveals he has been spotted in Nevarra, looking to go to Tevinter, though his reasons are unknown. If Josephine's personal quest has been completed, Jonathan will be heading to Antiva.
Romance is available to both male and female Inquisitors, but certain dialogue and game choices will lock out the Inquisitor for pursuing a romance with Jonathan. Choices that will lock out a romance option are:
7/14 or more aggressive/stoic responses picked during possible emotional responses:
Initial prison scene
"The Maker sent him to us in our darkest hour."
"Does it trouble you?"
Chantry address in Val Royeaux
Redcliffe Castle - Talking to Dorian in the future
Redcliffe Castle - Meeting Fiona
Redcliffe Castle - Meeting Alexius
Redcliffe Castle - Leaving the future
Greeting Corypheus
Being offered the title of Inquisitor
Entering the Fade
Finding out about the Anchor
Where is the Warden/Hawke
Right before the balcony dance scene
Leashing the mages or the templars
No people saved in Haven during In Your Heart Shall Burn
Declaring the Inquisition for the Inquisitor's own power
Letting Celene die
His romance quest will only be available after completing Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts. He will still show up for the balcony scene if the Inquisitor is not locked in another romance. If the Inquisitor let Celene die during the quest, Jonathan will reject them, but will offer a last dance.
Note: Female Inquisitors need three instances of flirting to trigger a romance, while male Inquisitors need two.
If the Inquisitor doesn't romance Jonathan, banter will reveal that he may be interested in Dorian. It is possible to trigger a romance between the two through banter progression. However, if a romance between Dorian and Iron Bull happens instead, Jonathan will step away. If asked about it, he will comment that he's content to see Dorian happy, and will not say anything more on the matter.
The Inquisitor has the option to trigger a one night stand between either Jonathan/Inquisitor/Iron Bull or Jonathan/Dorian/Iron Bull, depending on the choices with Bull's dialogue.
Trespasser
High Approval:
Jonathan has spent the last few years with the Inquisition forces, under the guidance of Scout Harding or Josephine (if his personal quest was completed). He will continue to act as an Inquisition agent whether the Inquisition is disbanded or not, either as a lone traveller seeking information, or as a noble representative. Under certain circumstances, he will inform the Inquisitor that the city of Ostwick has sent his sister, Nadia Trevelyan, as a representative to the Exalted Council, to offer the Inquisition their full support.
He will stay with the Inquisition whether he romanced the Inquisitor or not. If he romanced Dorian however, he will join him in Tevinter after the Exalted Council.
Low Approval
If Jonathan left the party during the events of the game, he will not be at the Winter Palace.
If Jonathan stayed with the Inquisition, he will be available at the Winter Palace. Dialogue will reveal that he is trying to use what little influence he has to call for the Inquisition to be disbanded.
Combat Comments:
Killing an enemy
Decent try.
Right where I wanted you.
Low Health
Some assistance please!
I can't keep up!
Low Health (Companions)
(The Inquisitor) "Inquisitor, watch your step!"
(The Inquisitor, if romanced): "Stay the fuck away from him/her!"
(The Inquisitor, if human): "Careful, damnit! Stay low!"
(Solas) "Step back, Solas!"
(Dorian) "Dorian, take cover!"
(Cole) "Cole, vanish!"
(Varric) "Someone go to Varric!"
(Cassandra) "Shield high, Seeker!"
(the reason he's telling companions to watch out is because he'll likely throw something explosive at their enemies)
Fallen Companions
(The Inquisitor) "No, please, get up!"
(The Inquisitor, if human or romanced): "Inquisitor? Get up or so help me!"
(Dorian) "No! I was too slow!"
(Blackwall) "You have to move, Warden!"
(Cassandra) "Someone check on Cassandra, she's hurt!"
Location Comments
(Approaching camp) "Perhaps we could rest. Is this a good spot?"
(Picking up a shard) "What could it be? I'd be wary of anything mysterious and glowing if I were you. Not that your hand- Well. Nevermind me."
(When the map compass pulses) "How strange..."
(First time battling a high dragon) "I'll go find a good spot. In the distance. That's what I'm good at."
Crestwood
(after closing the rift in the lake) "It's quite lovely during the day."
(seeing sunken boats after draining the lake) "I wonder whose these used to be."
(after completing Still Waters) (shaking) "Drowned like rats. This is- You must bring him in!"
Storm Coast
"I'm not so sure it was wise to bring me here. The rocks are - ah! - slippery. I'm fine."
(approaching the sea) "Hm. There's the Free Marches, huh? And that way is Kirkwall. I wonder if fishermen saw the explosion from here."
Western Approach
"Ah, I've missed the smell of scorched sand. It's so... Is that strange?"
(The Still Ruins) "What. How is this possible? Let me have a look around..."
Emprise Du Lion
"Frozen, slippery rocks. I'll keep close to the road."
Emerald Graves
"I've never seen a forest this quiet. And yet it feels so full, like the busiest market in Val Royeaux. Don't you feel watched?"
(Chateau D'Onterre) "I have a horrible feeling about this, Inquisitor."
Exalted Plains
"This place... So much death..."
Fallow Mire
"What was that? I think I saw something move beneath the waterline."
Forbidden Oasis
"How refreshing! Though I'd be wary of the wildlife, much hunting goes on by fresh water."
Hissing Wastes
"Those mountains look like they were carved through magic."
(finding dwarven ruins) "May I take a second to write this down? I'll need to send a letter..."
Winter Palace
(finding the dead servants) "Oh... More victims of this nonsense..."
Vivienne: "They always kill the servants first, my dear. Otherwise, they could run and warn someone."
Jonathan: (huffs) Arrêtez-vous, Madame.
Vivienne: Pitiful.
(after meeting Briala in the Grand Apartments):
Cassandra: "More politics and double-dealing. Is there anyone here who is not corrupt?"
or
Blackwall: "Does it seem strange that every single person at this party has tried to bribe us?"
Vivienne: "It's the Game, my dear. Everyone plays it here."
Jonathan: "This isn't a fucking game!"
Companion Comments:
Blackwall: "Didn't think much of him in the beginning to be honest. What's another poncy noble going to add to the Inquisition? But he's an honest, kind man. A little on the soft side, perhaps."
(after Blackwall's personal quest) "It's been hard, readjusting to life here after... A lot harder than I thought. Trevelyan and Sera have been a great help."
Dorian: "Hah, a mystery for the ages. Have you seen him lately? I'd wager no. He seems almost as busy as you are, with both Josephine and Scout Harding sending him off to do their errands. Poor man doesn't know when to say no."
(if the Inquisitor romanced Jonathan) "Ah but what of him indeed, dear Inquisitor. Word in the tavern is you like the soft and gentle type. Or the really pretty type, I can't blame you either way. I hope you two find some time for yourselves despite the busy schedules."
(if Jonathan romanced Dorian) "He's tragically away somewhere doing Josephine's bidding at the moment, leaving me to pine away like a damsel in distress. Only with good wine, of course. I'll tell him you said hello."
Sera: "Pffft. Daft. Harmless, though. Can take a joke. Friends would prank him for shits and giggles. May be noble butt, but it's one who cares, yeah, and there ain't enough of those."
Vivienne: "Our dear Lord Trevelyan has poise, I'll admit that. Such a pity he chose to ignore it in favour of running around in the woods like a chasind savage. In another life, he could have played the Game well. In this one, the Game would eat him alive."
(after Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts, if the Inquisitor is in a romance with Jonathan) "It's getting late, my dear. Surely you have better things to do."
Cassandra: "He is an honourable man, and determined to help the Inquisition. I have great respect for him. But there's something really...mild, about his character."
Varric: "Do you believe in coincidences? I don't. Trevelyan is an almost perfect copy of someone I used to know. All so sodding noble, doe-eyed, righteous and chantry-looking. Not to mention the bow, it's unnerving. I know there are types, but Sweet Andraste! Anyway, our Marksman is what you get if you replace all charisma with a generous scoop of martyrdom. Watch him out there."
Or
"Have you ever met someone who is both very good and absolute shit at playing Wicked Grace? Trevelyan might be that one living paradox. At least you don't need to be concerned about him ever lying to you."
Solas: "It is refreshing seeing someone without prejudice amongst humankind. Though not a mage himself, he seems to take great interest in all things magic." (if the Inquisitor is a mage and in a romance with Jonathan) "Which I'm sure you're already aware of."
Cole: "Sheltered, shunned, searching, a smile turned to ash. He wants to help, to hope again. He is happy here. I'm glad he stays."
Iron Bull: "Heh. Pretty. And don't let the posture fool you, there's a lot hiding under that polished noble look. Mind him though, he's the kind to walk into the middle of danger."
(If the Inquisitor romanced Iron Bull) "He's kinda cute. What do you say, kadan?"
The Inquisitor can agree and ask Jonathan to join them in bed. Otherwise, he can disagree and nothing more will happen.
(If the Inquisitor romanced Jonathan) "Hey, hope you don't mind but I gotta ask, would you two be up for some drinks later?"
The Inquisitor can accept and say they will ask, which prompts a cutscene with Bull joining them in bed, or they can refuse and the option will not come up again.
(If Jonathan romanced Dorian OR if Iron Bull romanced Dorian) "Hey, do you think him and Dorian would be up for drinks later?"
The Inquisitor can say they don't think so, and nothing will happen. If the Inquisitor tells Bull to go and ask himself, then later banter may reveal something had happened between the three.
Leliana: "Strange. I wonder sometimes what could make someone like Lord Trevelyan join a war effort. There doesn't seem to be much to his name, least of all duty or glory. I shall keep looking."
Cullen: "He helped Sera stage an incident in the barracks the other day! Granted, it was only harmless fun, but I expected better from him."
Josephine: "Lord Trevelyan is quite a valuable ally, despite his modest standing with the Ostwick court. He brings in the most detailed information, and he's been a great asset to our cause. It's so nice to have someone to just talk to, as well. Will you please send him here if you come across him? I have his next assignment ready."
The Inquisitor: "Oh? Always happy to have someone handle the nobles for me."
Josephine: "I'll make sure he'll keep them off your back, Your Worship."
Trivia
Scout Harding will mention Jonathan having joined the Singquisition once or twice. She'll make a comment about rehearsals.
A lot of Jonathan's banter revolves around gifts he gives to different members of the Inquisition. His gift to the Inquisitor, no matter the class, will offer +30% fire resistance.
No matter what happens in the game Jonathan and Vivienne's relationship will deteriorate over time.
He grows close friends with Varric during the interlude before Trespasser, despite the dwarf finding him annoying in the beginning.
Under certain conditions, his fate will rely on help from Josephine.
His behaviour towards a high approval Inquisitor is not much different from a romanced Inquisitor.
