Miralles. Perpetuum Mobile in Barcelona
From 27.05.21 to 29.08.21
Disseny Hub. Plaça de les Glòries, 37 Barcelona
Entry Fee: 3 € (Entry fee to Disseny HUB)
Following the launch of the first three exhibitionts of the Miralles homage, Perpetuum Mobile opens at Disseny Hub on Wednesday 26th May, promoted by the Fundació Enric Miralles with the support of the Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat de Catalunya, to celebrate the work of Catalan architect Enric Miralles in his many facets as a creator, to mark the occasion of the 20th anniversary of his death.
The curators of the MIRALLES events are Benedetta Tagliabue and Joan Roig i Duran, with the collaboration of the Miralles Tagliabue EMBT architecture studio, the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura (ETSAB) and the Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya (COAC).
MIRALLES. Perpetuum Mobile shows the lesser-known side of Enric Miralles as a furniture designer. While the architecture studio he set up and ran with Benedetta Tagliabue works on interior projects, this is the first time his design work is shown collectively at an exhibition.
Although Miralles took care of every detail of the interior design of many of his private and public projects, the architect never designed furniture thinking of reproducing it commercially. In this exhibition, models of furniture and objects that were developed mainly for the architect’s home are exhibited and have been reproduced and displayed thanks to the support of the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), with a selection of sustainable American hardwoods donated by AE Maderas.
Miralles’ creative process was often aimed at bringing life to his designs. A desire that is also reflected in his photographic collages, giving movement to the image, as shown in the exhibition MIRALLES. Photos & Collages that is also part of the tribute. In the Disseny Hub it will be possible to appreciate the intention of bringing life and movement applied to his furniture designs.
The last home of the architect in Barcelona was an old warehouse from which walls were knocked down, leaving an open and versatile space, perfect for Miralles, who imagined a house in motion, where the furniture did not have an established place or shape, but could be moved or modified according to the needs of each moment.
To make this contemporary vision of the interior space come true, he personally designed his furniture, sharing his sketches with craftsmen and carpenters, with whom he debated and experimented on these pieces.
The exhibition MIRALLES. Perpetuum Mobile started from an intense search for documentation among the architect’s most private archives, and from a close dialogue with the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) about the reproduction of nine of the pieces.
The original design of each piece of furniture has remained the same with just a few technical updates (such as new hinges and connections for some of the pieces), while the materials used have been updated. While the original pieces were made in other timbers, the reproductions have been manufactured using a selection of four underused American hardwood species including red oak, maple, cherry and tulipwood, chosen for their aesthetic, performance and environmental credentials.
During the research phase, a notebook with a detailed drawing of an unknown table was found. Named ‘Mistery’ table, this piece has been built for the first time at La Navarra by deciphering the instructions that Miralles left in his notes.
The exhibition showcases more than 20 pieces, among them the ‘Inestable’, ‘Dolmen’, ‘Troncs’ and ‘Tropical’ tables, the ‘Lelukaappi’ shelf inspired by the work of the architect Alvar Aalto, several chairs that were used in projects such as the Scottish Parliament or the headquarters of the Círculo de Lectores in Madrid, as well as unpublished lamps, which Enric had started to design and left unfinished.
youtube
The structure of the exhibition symbolically reproduces the private house of Miralles and Tagliabue; the pieces of furniture are distributed in the space imitating their original position, sketches and drawings on the walls unveil details of their designs, and photos of the architect’s family life show them in use. The lamps designed by Miralles illuminate the furniture and are used as decorative elements.
The exhibition is accompanied by a stop-motion video and a documentary produced by AHEC that explains the meticulous process of rebuilding the pieces of furniture, based on the original idea and shows the movements that bring this furniture to “life”.

The Maricel Museum is a museum located in the centre of Sitges; reopened after a major refurbishment in 2015. The Maricel Museum is part of the Barcelona Provincial Council Local Museum Network.
The Maricel Museum exhibits a complete artistic route from the tenth century to realism and figuration during the first half of the twentieth century, passing through the art collections of Dr. Jesús Pérez Rosales and the Collection of Sitges, with works of great quality. The museum exhibition integrates multiple languages, techniques and artistic media in order to achieve a maximum consistency in the chronological sequence of the development of the arts.
The museum included works from the collection of Dr. Jesús Pérez-Rosales that never had been exhibited in public, acquisitions by the Sitges Heritage Association since 2012 (Ramon Casas, Miquel Utrillo, Arcadi Mas i Fondevila, Artur Carbonell i Augustí Ferrer Pino) and donations from artist’s relatives (Pere Jou and Alfred Sisquella). The museum’s own collection was complemented with several works from loans and deposits from art collections of the Government of Catalonia, the Museum of the Provincial Government of Barcelona and the Montserrat Museum, primarily with artists from “Modernisme” and “Noucentisme” linked to Sitges as Ramon Casas, Joaquim Sunyer, Lola Anglada, Pere Jou and Alfred Sisquella, among others. It also emphasizes the incorporation of valuable pieces of furniture from the ancestral home of Can Falç, currently under restoration.
The visit to the Maricel Museum begins on the second floor of the building with sculptures and altarpieces belonging to the Romanesque and Gothic periods (works by Pere Serra, Master of All, Master of Maluenda, Master of Armisen, Master of Belmonte, Master of Son, Joan d’Angers, Master of Viella, the Virgin of Sant Miquel del Fai, Master of Los Balbases, Tomàs Giner and Pedro Berruguete, among others), supplemented with furniture. The Renaissance and Baroque are represented by collections of ceramics and furniture, as well as still lifes. On the first floor, in the former room of Deering, there’s an exquisite selection of paintings (Arellano) and furniture dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
var quads_screen_width = document.body.clientWidth; if ( quads_screen_width >= 1140 ) { /* desktop monitors */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:468px;height:60px;" data-ad-client="pub-9117077712236756" data-ad-slot="9839843423" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width >= 1024 && quads_screen_width < 1140 ) { /* tablet landscape */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:468px;height:60px;" data-ad-client="pub-9117077712236756" data-ad-slot="9839843423" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width >= 768 && quads_screen_width < 1024 ) { /* tablet portrait */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:468px;height:60px;" data-ad-client="pub-9117077712236756" data-ad-slot="9839843423" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width < 768 ) { /* phone */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:468px;height:60px;" data-ad-client="pub-9117077712236756" data-ad-slot="9839843423" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }
Next are works from the Neoclassic period (Vicente Lopez) and Romanticism (Esquivel, Joaquim Espalter, Marià Fortuny, Federico de Madrazo); Realism (Felip Masó, Rafael Monleón Arcadi Mas i Fondevila and young Rusiñol), the hall dedicated to the Luminist School (Joan Roig Soler, Arcadi Mas i Fondevila, Antoni Almirall, Joaquim Miro i Argenter, Joan Batlle i Amell, Joan Soler i Casanovas and Càndid Duran); “Modernisme” (Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas, Josep Llimona, Miquel Utrillo), with a hall dedicated to “Modernisme” in Sitges with the paintings that decorated “Cerveseria del Cau Ferrat” (Santiago Rusiñol, Arcadi Mas i Fondevila, Joaquim de Miro, Antoni Almirall, Càndid Duran) and “Noucentisme” (Joaquim Sunyer, Pere Jou, Lola Anglada, Enric Casanovas, Ismael Smith, Xavier Nogués, Josep M. Gol, Josep Clarà, Pau Gargallo, Jaume Otero, Josep Granyer and Apel·les Fenosa, among others).
The ground floor of the Maricel Museum covers four clearly differentiated areas. At the ancient Gothic chapel of the Hospital of Sant Joan and the contiguous room there’s a sample that foreshadows the museum’s collection, as one pair of capitals dating from the tenth century, the Maiestas Domini dating from the thirteen century and altarpieces of Sant Salvador d’Alzina de Ribelles (Jaume Cabrera, c. 1400) and the Virgin, dating from the fourteen century and works of Pedro Orrente, Antonio Almirall, Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas and Pere Jou. Along with the chapel hall, the viewpoint is the most spectacular hall with views over the sea and three large “noucentista” sculptures (Joan Rebull). The Romanesque chapel hall dedicated to St. Bartholomew, .foueteen century, evokes Dr. Jesús Pérez-Rosales.
The long space that goes from the viewpoint to the Sert Hall is dedicated to realism and figuration in the interwar and postwar years with sculptures of Jou, Rebull, Casanovas and paintings of the Villà brothers, Mercader, Ferré Pino, Artur Carbonell, Sisquella and Pere Pruna. There’s also a large sculpture of El Greco, the original work of Josep Reynés (1898) that was replaced by a copy in 1970 due to its derelict condition, the original is now in a museum.
The Sert Hall concludes the visit to the Maricel Museum, with large murals that are an allegory of the Great War painted between 1915 and 1916 in the hope of Allied victory.

“MIRALLES” A tribute that remembers the architect in all his facets
The Fundació Enric Miralles, with the support of Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat of Catalonia, is promoting a tribute to Enric Miralles, whose death marked 20 years in 2020.
Exhibitions and activities will show throughout 2021 his many facets as a creator: architect, designer, photographer and teacher, bringing his professional and human figure to the general public.
The curators of the tribute, Benedetta Tagliabue and Joan Roig i Duran, have selected for the exhibitions, original and unpublished materials from the archives of the Fundació Enric Miralles.
Barcelona – Fundació Enric Miralles, with the support of the Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat of Catalonia, is promoting a tribute to Enric Miralles, one of the most emblematic figures in contemporary Catalan architecture, whose death marking 20 years this past 2020.
MIRALLES is a program of exhibitions and activities that shows the public the legacy that the architect left, with works in Barcelona -a city where he lived and worked-, Catalonia and worldwide. The tribute addresses his different facets as a creator: architect, designer, photographer and teacher, offering a multifaceted and personal look at his career.
The activities of MIRALLES are curated by Benedetta Tagliabue (Miralles Tagliabue EMBT) and Joan Roig i Duran (Batlle i Roig), and organized by Fundació Enric Miralles with the support of the Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat of Catalonia through their Departments of Presidency, Culture and Territory and Sustainability, in collaboration with the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB), the Architects’ Association of Catalonia (COAC) and the Miralles Tagliabue EMBT architecture studio.
This tribute “not only wants to remember the human and professional figure of Enric Miralles, but also wants to keep the spirit of the visionary, of the experimentalist, alive, as a way of working and seeing the world. And to leave his legacy also for the future generations.”Benedetta Tagliabue emphasizes.
The program extends to representative spaces of the city of Barcelona, starting with the Saló del Tinell, which is home to the exhibition about Miralles as architect, and also was chosen to host in 1956 the first retrospective of another illustrious architect of the city, Antoni Gaudí. The other venues for the activities, which are also emblematic, will be at the Centre d’Arts Santa Mònica of the Generalitat of Catalonia, the Disseny Hub of Barcelona City Council, the Architects’ Association of Catalonia (COAC), the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB) and the Fundació Enric Miralles.
Through these spaces a “Miralles circuit” has been designed that can be visited at various times of the year and that is accessible to all audiences. Thanks to the different formats: talks, debates, photography, videos, plans, drawings, models, notebooks, sketches, collages … anyone, whether or not linked to the world of architecture, can get closer to the human figure life of one of the most international contemporary Catalan architects.
Miralles has an exceptionally prolific career: in just 26 years of profession, from 1974 to 2000, he received 62 awards, participated in 68 competitions and was a finalist in many others. In addition, he has carried out installations and executed different projects. Among all these aspects, a total of 225 works and projects are collected in different countries such as Holland, Spain, Italy, Germany, Scotland, Japan, Austria, Argentina, United States, Brazil, Greece, Finland, France, USA, England, Ireland, Switzerland, and Denmark.
He taught in Barcelona, Frankfurt, and at the most prestigious universities in the United States such as Harvard, Columbia, Princeton, and Yale. He is the most studied and imitated architect by students in the western and eastern world. The foundation that treasures his legacy receives more than 2,000 visits from all over the world each year. The tribute prioritizes the documentation and materials that Miralles made in his lifetime, some of them unpublished, which will come out of the archive for the first time.
But MIRALLES is also an act of affirmation of the heritage it has left in the history of architecture and in the academic world, extending its gaze to the imprint that the EMBT studio has been able to follow.
Curator Joan Roig i Duran explains that “a meticulous research effort has been made within the archives to find those documents and materials that can best explain Miralles to the general public. It is not a tribute made from a distance; it has been thought from the front line to make it accessible to everyone.”
