you underestimate the power of casting they are the gatekeepers of everything we see and they do their damage unchecked, yes casting certain actor do influence on other stuff like the writing, the costume, im also from Harry Potter fandom and i know a lot of stuff from the costume designer Janny Temime the woman who also did hotd costume, one time she got interview why Hermione dress is pink in the film not periwinkle blue like in the book and she said because the actor FACE look way prettier with pink, she also put a lot much effort dressing up Bellatrix because Helena Bonham Carter is attractive.
Have you ever imagine what this woman thought when she saw a short hair boyist actor on her table and designing what this actor would wore? Have you ever imagine what the writers think when they write their characters? And not to make it awkward because as far as i know from season 1 leaked script this Rhaenyra is different (that beach scene is the cherry on top) they dont even show them kissing her baby daddy who she had three kids with, even in secrets lol, meanwhile Emma want to kiss Mysaria because reasons?
when i mention that they feels proud acting with "skirt" is literally in their season one interview not me.
They dont play a character they just play themself, if they ask a sword why not? Its not worst thing so far, they literally need to spell it out on screen how much they hate jewels and gown.
Anon responds to this post where, I presume, they wrote that ask to me.
I really don't want to research these bts things or continue with the whole Rhaenyra-with-a-sword thing, bc no matter what you or your opposers say anon, I wouldn't have liked Ryan/Sara writing Rhaenyra with a sword bc I distrust how they write women so much that I don't trust them with the "nuance" of female queens using swords as symbols--thus my dislike of seeign it in the pre-S2 features. And though I am not watching S3, I still hold possible that they planned in the past (and are now pivoting away), or that they will try to sneak in, Rhaenyra-as-a-sword-warrior in anyway. If not, that can only be good.
Besides, Hermione's dress bein blue instead of pink never drastically changed the meaning and mood of the scene like how they've totally rewrote Rhaenyra, so...that was unconvincing and extreme. I have also watched HP. We still got the important bit of Hermione coming out not what any character or (some) nonbk readers expected from her, this caring about her appearance and wanting to enjoy flirtations with boys who find her attractive "like other girls". However, with Rhaenyra never really getting primped up except a scene here and there AND her her nonconfrontionality after Viserys dies AND her severe change in personality after epi 5 AND her relationship with Alicent over Laena, Rhaena, Baela, etc really are not equivalent because it toally changed HER as a character.
Ever since the writers decided that Rhaenyra wasn't going to beRhaenyra anymore, THEY were the ones responsible for how that character will turn out. THEY AND PRODUCERS have final say. Blaming Rhaenyra's horrible writing on the fact that her actor is visually gender-nonconforming is going beyond enbyphobia. The costumer has how much power over the character that is being WRITTEN? Who directs the costumer towards a larger vision that they must conform the costume to, who has the final say? Who directs the actor, who does the actor get their following ideas to further realize the PRIOR VISION OF SAID CHARACTER that they get from the script?
Perhaps I do underestimate it and am being a bit narrowminded or pretentious, but neither am I going back to check through the dozens of interviews to check for Emma's hatred for girly stuff to attack Emma's presentation and claims of projection directing the entire plot. And that being what inspired the writers/costumers to make their Rhaenyra not what she is supposed to be. The show doesn't matter that much to me, as I have said multiple times AND regardless of how Emma feels or says, this show had been written even from Milly's time that they wanted Rhaenyra to become les decisive and impacted from her stupid relationship with Alicent. I already noted how sexist they wrote Alicent AND how they tried to convince people this was a viable, true relationship to the detriment of every concievable character close to Rhaenyra. How this ship (other stuff, too, but this ship was a prime mechanism towards it) forever made the subpar characters we see today in the writers hope to be "different".
We really don't need to make it so that the costume designer, looking at Emma's personal preferences, decided or had the greater influence to make Older!Rhaenyra also put down feminine-coded book!Rhaenyra things when the entire character had been botched for the sake of "women-good-bc-nonviolent" thing. The scripts from the start are self evident even without the bts stuff.
What is even wrong with Helena Bonham Carter getting that extra umph when Helena is an attractive woman herself AND Bellatrix Lestrange was CANONICALLY considered very beautiful before she got crazy and still was pretty attractive afterwards? It perfectly fits. She wasn't even that sexualized..or at all? Bellatrix is also very ostentatious both in cruelty AND visual presentation with her curly hair and stark black clothes.
